Secluential blasting is one of the most popular methods in blasting. tiowever, it is well known that an emulsion explosive can be dead-pressed by dynamic pressure generated by the previous detonation. It is difficult to gain the expected blasting performance due to tb.e malfunction of explosive caused by deadpressing and shock desensitization. Such malfunction of an explosive is undesirable for safety blasting operation. Voids in the emulsion explosives will considerably affect the performance of explosives such as sensitivity, detonation velocity (DV), pressure-resistance and so on. To clarify the detonability and the performance of precompressed emulsion explosives, the DV was measured. Three types of microballoon or micro bubble ; two types of glass microballoon(GMB), resin microballoon@MB) and chemical gas bubble ; were used as sensitizers for the sample emulsion expiosives. The underwater explosion test was carried out to load dynamic pressure into the sample explosives. The dynamic pressure was generated by the detonation of a donor explosive, and the DV of the sample explosives as acceptor was measured by ionized gap terminals. The dynamic pressure level and initiation interval for the donor and the acceptor were chosen as experimental factors. The detonability was carefully investigated at short initiation intervals taking into consideration the interaction between same delays caused by the deviation of the ignition time of the electric detonators. From these experiments, the following results were obtained ; A) The DV of precompressed emulsion explosives was low compared with that of uncompressed emulsion explosives in all pressure conditions. B) The decrease of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB s was larger than that of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs or chemical gas bubbles. C) The recovery of the detonability occurred rapidly in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs and chemical gas bubbles. However, a long period was needed for the recovery of detonability in the sample explosives sensitized by GME! s. It was concluded that the type of microballoon and micro bubble significantly influenced the detonability of precompressed emulsion explosives.

The use of large diameter blastholes for underground mining began approximately twelve years ago and are now routinely employed in a variety of ore types and stope designs. These large boreholes, ranging in size from 4 1/2 inch to 8 inch diameter, were first utilized in the same fashion as in open pit bench drilling. It is a well-known industry fact that many mine sites around the globe experience blast holes that have elevated temperatures due to reactive ground, geochemical reactions, geomorphic reactions, sub level open fires, etc. It has been reported in many previous industry publications (White, Saputra et al) that elevated blast hole temperatures are a norm at many mine sites and are dealt with on an ongoing basis while the drill and blast process continues under elevated states of alert. The choice of explosives products including the type of detonator, primer, accessory, and bulk product all must be taken into consideration when loading blast holes where there is a known potential for elevated temperature conditions. It should also be noted that these elevated temperatures inside blast holes can be consistent throughout the blast hole length or vary in position within the blast hole depending on the mine conditions mentioned in the opening statement above. The risks associated with the loading of primers and bulk explosives in holes where elevated temperatures are present include: the ejection of the bulk explosives product, deflagration of the explosives during initiation of the blast or premature and uncontrolled initiation of a blast hole(s). This paper describes a unique and novel approach to the active monitoring of the temperature within blast holes with the application of electronic detonators with integrated temperature measuring (ITM) capabilities, deployed and demonstrated at a mine site in Mexico during January 2023 to March 2023. The deployment of ITM capable electronic detonators allows a user to monitor and record the real time temperature at multiple locations (e.g., toe, middle and collar) at each electronic detonator’s position within the blast hole, with the ability to react instantaneously to elevations in temperature reported. The measurement of the temperature can be for a single ITM electronic detonator, or simultaneous for an array of ITM electronic detonators, allowing for the potential for the data to be represented by a time/temperature/hole depth three-dimensional heat map. Changes in temperature at different borehole positions can vary, however, often the collar position is expected to be the most reactive due the combination of bulk explosive product and oxygen exposure, which can be confirmed with the application of the ITM electronic detonators. A mine site’s reaction to a measured elevated temperature within a blast hole can vary depending on the temperature measured and the change in temperature from the last measurement made. The study was found to produce real-time in-hole temperature information which was previously unobtainable without the introduction of another device. New and adaptive elevated temperature hole policies can be created and adapted proactively as real time information is received, leading to a safer mining operation.

This article presents a comprehensive study on the development and application of the specific module called "Exclusion Zone" created by Orica to determine blast evacuation exclusion zones. This module, integrated into the "SHOTPlus™ (blast design software)" software, has been used in the context of optimizing equipment evacuation exclusion zones in a northern Chile mine. The main objective has been to reduce the travel times of extraction equipment without compromising the safety of individuals. The module considers various factors such as the explosive charges used, stemming, sector topography, and detonation sequence to determine the rock projection generated by the blast. Furthermore, it utilizes information collected by drones and support tools such as Groundprobe and BlastVision™. The results obtained demonstrate that the use of this technology has allowed the optimization of blast evacuation distances in the northern Chile mine, generating significant economic benefits for the client.

Numerical modelling of fragmentation and throw is used to provide information on practical blast design parameters. The function of airdecking and its practical implications, the importance of the initiation point and aspect ratio of cratering charges and the timing between adjacent blastholes are investigated. Accuracy requirements for detonators are discussed with emphasis placed on the volume and fragmentation of the blasted rock, and compared to experimental results. Practical guidelines which have been based on intuition are examined using the model. Some of the predictions have been tested and correlate well with experimental results, obtained in the laboratory. Findings show that a minimum airdeck length is needed to realize any benefit from the application of airdecking in production blasting while the process can enhance the shock energy provided by non-ideal explosives significantly, bottom initiation of charges is beneficial to fragmentation and the aspect ratio for cratering charges can exceed the traditionally accepted ratio of 6. Regarding timing, in the ease of cratering charges, true simultaneous initiation shows beneficial results for the volume of blasted rock; however the accuracy required for practical detonators is very high. Fragmentation improves after a certain delay time while the optimum can be achieved at a range of delays. Timing affects muckpile shape; however it appears that subtle differences in delay times do not have a significant effect.

An underground room-and-pillar limestone mine in Western Missouri acquired a new primary crusher, physically larger in every dimension than the unit it replaced. Due to the space constraints within the mine, resetting the truck dump and feeder to account for the larger crusher was unfeasible. Mine management determined the most practical solution was to increase the available area for the new crusher via blasting. Fitting the new crusher into the existing area required the removal of 6 feet (1.83m) of limestone from the original floor grade. Blast parameters had to be designed to effectively break this shallow depth of rock while controlling movement to avoid contacting the mine back 23 feet (7.01m) overhead, an apron feeder 13 feet (3.96m) above the southern extent of the area, and the original crusher which was still in place 15 feet (4.57m) from the first pattern. Additionally, work needed to be completed within an aggressive schedule set forth by the mine, allowing little room for delay or error. This paper will examine the efforts taken to safely and effectively blast the rock while protecting nearby equipment and integrity of the mine back. Subjects covered will include blast design, adjustments made to account for drilling and equipment-related constraints, and how seemingly small changes in load parameters can significantly impact performance with small-diameter blast design.

Explosives used for blasting operations in civil engineering works, like construction of piping systems under roads, of pools, of houses and buildings can generate large volumes of carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide can represent between 1 to 3% of the gases produced by usual explosives. The production of 10 to 24 1 of CO by kg of explosives blasted is theoretically anticipated. CO is a gas that has no characteristic colour, smell or taste. It can migrate in the fractured rock of the blasted areas on fair distances, and then infiltrate in closed spaces like sewage systems, manholes, but also in basements of houses. In Quebec, in the last 10 years, 7 people were poisoned by CO in their houses to the point that they had to be treated in hyperbaric chambers. In the USA, many accidents have occurred and one worker died in a manhole. From the review of intoxication cases, the distance of migration of CO may reach 55 m if a conduit is present underground. Underground conduits broken by blast, tilling around underground conduits in road or house trenches, or fractured rock created by blasts between houses or between a house and a road, are the different pathways identified in the Quebec incidents. Field tests were performed at sites close to CO intoxication locations in order to evaluate the behaviour of CO in fractured rock following blasting operations. From these tests, the following conclusions may be drawn. The structural geology of the rock formation (schistosity, family of joints, fractures) plays a role in the direction and extent of gas migration in fractures generated when rock is blasted with explosives. The confinement of the rock can affect the quantity of gas migrating in the fractured rock. Significant concentrations of CO may persist in the fractured rock even 7 days after a blast. Advection is the initial mechanism of CO migration in fractured rock generated by the blasts or naturally occurring before the blast. The distance of migration with this mechanism is short (5 to 8 m). In trenches of muck (equivalent to tills under roads) the distance of CO migration by advection is 12 to 20 m. In the 2 to 3 days following the blasts, further CO migration up to 15 m is made by diffusion in the induced fractures, or up to 30 m in the trenches. To minimise CO production and migration in the fractured rock during blasting, special procedures can be applied by the blasting contractors: (1) do the complete excavation of the overburden before drilling and put mats for each blast; (2) do the complete excavation of the muck after each blast; (3) the last blasting should be the one for the private services entrance of the house and the excavation of the muck should begin at the junction between the road trench and the services entrance trench. Another technique consists in the pumping of interstitial air in the muck with a vacuum truck immediately after each blast.

Does anyone have any definitive information on vibration limits for damage to well casings near blasting? Also, are people using self-imposed limits when approaching cased wells? I can only tell you what I have personally done with success. Often in new construction in hard rock, the well is drilled before the foundation is excavated and before the ditch for the water line is excavated. These both require drilling and blasting. Under these circumstances when blasting for the ditch for the waterline we will drill right up to within 10 inches (not feet) of the well casing. We drill line holes the width of the ditch, then about a foot from this, another row of trim holes then as we move away from the casing holes for 1 1/4 inch stick powder for about three rows then as we get further still, we can load with ANFO. I do not have vibration data for this but my experience has been that as long as you are not displacing the material into the casing that no damage is done. These typically are steel casings for residential water service.

As part of the redevelopment of the Royal Brisbane Hospital complex in Australia, a number of antiquated buildings were to be demolished and replaced by newer, modem facilities. Aside from the decommissioning of the hospital buildings, the project called for the removal of approximateIy 24,000 bank cubic metres (bcm) of varying quality rock material. Given the sensitivity of the project, in particular the close proximity of the required excavation to the existing hospital structures (-3 metres at the closest point), and the requirement that these were to remain lily operational during the construction phase, it was initially proposed to use hydraulic rock hammers as the primary means of excavation. Poor production rates and unexpected dif3icuIt rock conditions led to a revision of the excavation methods and a feasibility study on drill and blast practices was undertaken. Subsequent to an initial series of trial blasts to illustrate that vibration and flyrock could be adequately controlled, drill and blast methods were used in conjunction with mechanical methods of rock breakage. This paper reviews the drU and blast processes and the practices which were necessary to comply with the multiple constraints imposed on the project. The project has highlighted that modified drill and blast practices remain a cost-effective method of excavation, even in sensitive areas which are commonly deemed inappropriate for such methods.
