"The basis of the tomographic velocity imaging technique is briefly described and an application of the method to detect and image a cross-section through a chromite pod is presented. Using the chromite application as an example, the relative costs of tomographic data acquisition and processing are compared with those of diamond drilling to obtain similar resolution. A number of different tomographic survey configurations and the potential role of the method in surface and underground exploration are discussed.IntroductionThe technique of seismic tomography has been most widely applied in oil industry exploration, nuclear waste disposal, civil engineering site investigations and in the assessment of the condition of mass concrete structures. Although model studies had indicated that tomography would be a useful tool in mineral exploration, relatively few applications have been reported.Essentially the method relies on the determination of the speed with which sound travels through a region within a cross-section of the earth or large body. The speed of sound is determined by the physical characteristics of the medium through which it is passing. In geophysics the speed of sound is generally referred to as the seismic velocity. Due to variations in the formations of different rocks the seismic velocity will vary and so can be used to map geological boundaries"

Cette méthode a permis d'excellents résultats par rapport à la dilution. De plus, la récupération de pilier à haute teneur par forage long trou sera expliquée. Cette méthode permet aussi de récupérer le minerai qui est resté accroché dans les chantiers chambre-magasins. Introduction : La mine Géant Dormant est une mine filonienne d?or située à environ 80km au nord de la ville d?Amos au Québec. Elle est en opération depuis 1988 et à la fin de 2007, elle a produit près de 885 000 onces d?or à partir d?environ 2 400 000 tonnes de minerai pour une teneur moyenne d?environ 11,5g /t Au. Cette mine est la propriété d?IAMGOLD Corporation depuis l?acquisition de Cambior par cette dernière au mois de novembre 2006. Elle emploie 151 employés permanents et environ 41 entrepreneurs.

"Temperature effects on the erosion of the 6063 aluminum alloy were investigated. Erosion experiments were performed by sandblasting silicon carbide particles of 80 grit size. The target volume loss, and worn depths of the eroded material were investigated at different temperatures. It was found that the temperature had only a minor impact on the peak attack angle. The effect of temperature on erosion damage depended on the relative humidity (RH) of the environment. IntroductionThe synergy of wind and sand or dust may result in the erosion of materials. However, the severity of erosion damage in different areas and in different seasons might be varied, depending on environmental variables such as temperature and humidity. As a result, determining the effect of environmental variables on erosion damage is important in selecting or ranking materials for their suitable applications in diverse areas.The relationship between erosion wastage and temperature is governed by many factors including temperature dependent properties of the material (strength, ductility, toughness, and dynamic hardness, etc.), mechanical erosion characteristics, the rate of oxidation, and the mechanical properties of oxides. Although the effect of temperature on erosion has been studied for engineering materials (Smeltzer et al., 1970; Gat and Tabakoff, 1978; 1980; Levy et al., 1986; Levy and Man, 1986; Chinnadurai and Bahadur, 1995; Howard and Ball, 1997; Colclough and Yeomans, 1997; Suckling and Allen, 1997), published literature dealing with aluminum alloy is rather limited."

Copper electrowinning is a complex electrochemical process that involves the production of LME grade copper from copper rich electrolyte. The process involves the deposition of the copper ions onto the cathode from copper rich electrolyte with the production of oxygen bubbles at the anode. Acid mist is produced by these oxygen bubbles bursting at the electrolyte free surface. It is an undesired by-product of the Electrowinning process which unchecked could result in mist generation higher than the recommended time-weight-average exposure limit. Various approaches to alleviate the problem have been adopted by companies, all with varying degrees of success. All of these have been attempts to treat the symptom acid mist rather than the inherent problem, often proving expensive and, in some cases, ineffectual. In this paper, a new method was developed for acid mist quantification based on ‘total acid mist’ capture above the EW cell under well controlled conditions. With the use of sophisticated diagnostic analytical tools and measurement techniques it was possible to study all the operating variables including current density, flow rate, temperature, etc. independently and their effect on bubble size, bubble velocity, gas hold-up as well as acid mist generation and its droplet size. Results show that total acid mist capture increases with an increase in current density but remains more or less constant between 300–500 A m-2. Total acid mist also shows an increase with increasing electrolyte temperature. These findings are substantiated with the aid of bubble size and gas hold-up measurements with the transparent EW cell.

"The Laochang mine, located in the Sanjiang area of southwestern Yunnan Province of China, is a volcanogenic massive Pb-Zn-Cu sulfide deposit. It is hosted by a pyroclastic sequence of Early Carboniferous age, namely the lower member of the Yiliu Group, which was intruded by syenite and rhyolite porphyry. The volcanic suite is basaltic or basaltic-andesitic in composition, has alkaline affInities, and is associated with the initial rifting along the margin of the Baoshan-Shanstate continental microplate (Yang, 1989). The ores are typically Pb>Zn>Cu in composition, averaging 3.820/0 Pb, 3.51% Zn, from 0.01% to 1.85% Cu (0.107% av.), a high average content of Ag (113 glt) and recoverable amounts of Au, n, Gd, Ga, Ge, In. A massive sulfide zone, in which lenticular and stratiform orebodies are localized in a sulfide-<:arbonate-silica shale unit or sulfidic tuffIte horizon that usually overlies coarse-grained pyroclastic rocks, is underlain by a stringer sulfide zone developed in a subvolcanic intrusion or volcanic sequence. The sulfIde mineral assemblages, from the top to the bottom of the deposit, are: realgar + orpiment - galena + sphalerite + pyrite - chalcopyrite + pyrite + pyrrhotite + arsenopyrite. Oxide and sulfate minerals occur rarely in the massive ores. The massive ores are generally fme-grained and banded, but coarse-grained ore, colloform and framboidal texture, and growth-zoned pyrite and sphalerite are common. Sedimentary features such as graded bedding, brecciated and deformed ore clasts, and chaotically emplaced blocks, are well preserved, indicating that the massive orebodies have undergone slumping and displacement. Alteration is weak in the hanging-wall rocks, but strong in the stringer zone. Two distinctive alteration zones have been identifIed: the upper zone, characterized by an assemblage of quartz, carbonates, chlorite, albite, zeolite and sericite, and the lower zone containing diopside, tremolite, actinolite, gamet, clinozoisite, and epidote.The general features of the Laochang deposit are in accord with the descriptive model of VMS deposits (Lydon, 1984). However, it falls into neither the Zn-Cu group nor the Zn-Pb-Cu group chemically (Franklin et al., 1981). The depositional setting of the Laochang deposit is quite different from Cyprus or Besshi-type massive sulfide deposits. Laochang is hosted by alkaline lavas that were erupted in a submarine continental rift. Although some features of the Laochang deposit are similar to those of Kuroko-type deposits, there are remarkable differences in the alteration mineral assemblage, the proportion of ore-forming elements (lead enriched) and the amounts of oxides and sulfates. These suggest corresponding differences in ore fluid composition and the associated ore-forming environment. Thus, the authors suggest that the Laochang deposit may be a distinct type of VMS deposit."

PRIOR to June, 1937, the employees of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., at Timmins, Ontario, received medical care for themselves under a contract system developed through an agreement between the employer, employee, and a contract physician. This form of practice is common to the mining industry in Ontario. But with the improvement in mining methods and conditions of living, and through an increasing demand for provision of a complete medical care, it was not any surprise when the employees of the Hollinger mine approached organized medicine and indicated their desire for a plan to provide their families with a more or less complete medical service in addition to that supplied for themselves. In April, 1937, this approach was made, and on June 18th, 1937, the Hollinger Employees&apos; Medical Services Association was formed and started to provide medical services. A review of five years&apos; experience is now presented. The Association provides complete medical service for the employee, his wife and family, as well as those dependents who are the total responsibility of the employee. The employee membership is limited to employees at the Hollinger mine in Timmins who reside in the immediate vicinity. The employee is examined by a Company doctor on application for employment and is subject to further examination by a specialise in chest diseases under the direction of the Workmen&apos;s Compensation Board of Ontario. The wife and family are not subject to examination but have to be registered when the employee is accepted for employment. The dependents, other than the immediate family, are subject to medical examination and approval after the employee has applied for such dependent or dependents to be admitted. Membership in the Association is obligatory when the employee is hired, but at the end of any Association year he may drop out if he so wishes.

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. Ces dernières sont les roches hôtes du diamant. Le Green River Basin recoupe les champs à lamproïte de Leucite Hills, au Wyoming et de Kamas en Utah, et il surmonte le craton archéen du Wyoming, connu pour la présence de ses diamants. This paper will discuss the benefits and advantages of using 3D survey data in stope analysis. Obtaining detailed 3D survey data of underground mine progress and production is a challenge. It is almost impossible to ?see? around corners, underneath overhangs, or deep into dark, dusty, humid underground voids. Thus, valuable ore can remain permanently encased in backfill. Without the benefit of 3D survey data, underground mines have the difficult task of meeting grade quotas without the benefit of knowing exactly what has been mined. Lack of this data usually results in unfavorable month end Reconciliation factors, where grades must be adjusted to match grades assessed by the Mill.

"Discussion at MeetingDR. D. DERRY (Ventures Limited) referring to the diagram (Figure 15) which shows a transverse structure section across the Central Slocan area, asked what the assumed structure at depth was, remarking that dips are steeper and more uniform at depth and that the contortions with gently-dipping axial planes are at higher elevations. He wondered whether the section represented ,part of a very large fold with steeply-dipping axial plane.MR. J. D. LITTLE (Canadian Exploration, Limited) replied that E. B. Mayo (Kelowna Exploration Company) and others had considered that the entire section illustrated faces to the southwest and represents part of the lower limb of a great overturned •syncline which is concave toward the southwest.DR. R. DEWIT (Geological Survey) remarked that the photograph of a ripple mark (Figure 7) showed internal lamination conformable to the ripple mark and wondered if the structure was not due to slumping during consolidation, since the normal mode of formation of ripple mark would seem to preclude the possibility of such internal stratification.MR. LITTLE remarked that in his opinion such structures should not be depended upon alone with-out other confirmatory evidence of the direction of tops of beds."

Mine lateral development advance rates currently average about 5 metres (16.5 ft.) per day. Granduc Tunnel hit 35.1 metres (115 ft.) on their best day, 12 km from the portal, single heading forty-three years ago. This Canadian mining record remains an excellent example of rapid drill and blast excavation with suggestions for improving current practice.

Mining companies in communities without other large employers often encounter dependent or defiant stakeholder attitudes, sometimes simultaneously. Less often they also see some slip into social dissipation or advance towards sustainable development. This paper presents a four-quadrant framework that shows how patterns of social capital foster these four reactions. The two dimensions defining the quadrants are the social capital levels (a) between the company and each stakeholder, and (b) among stakeholders themselves. Examples from the Antamina mine in Peru illustrate a social capital measurement system that can predict these reactions and help the community chart its path towards sustainable development.

Abstract - A simple linear model for interpreting duplicate analytical data for a range of values is described. The conceptual model can be quantified using a reduced major axis model rather than the inappropriate traditional least squares approach. The reduced major axis parameters (slope, intercept) and associated errors provide a quantitative basis for: (1) defining bias, and (2) comparing results within laboratories, between laboratories and between sampling/analytical methods. Application of the linear model must be preceded by extraction of obvious outliers or small groups of values that have an inordinately large impact on values of the statistical parameters defining the model. In addition, consideration must be directed to the presence of more than one population of sampling error, as in the case of multiple styles of mineralization being sampled.

The steadily increasing interest in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) as a legitimate alternative comminution technology for hard rock applications has led to a proportional increase in the demand for trade-off studies comparing HPGR with more established approaches, typically SAG-based but including AG and stage-crushing designs. The primary trade-off is between a) the higher capital cost typically incurred with HPGR-based designs and b) the higher operating costs of the more traditional technologies. However, if, through circuit design innovation, the capital cost penalty of HPGR circuits could be eliminated or reversed, then the need for trade-off studies would diminish.

A novel design for an automated uranium pellet stacking system is presented. This system is designed as a drop-in solution to the current production line to enhance the fuel pellet stacking process. The three main goals of this system are to reduce worker exposure to radiation to as low as reasonable achievable (ALARA), improve product quality, and increase productivity. The proposed system will reduce the potential for human error. This single automated system will replace the two existing pellet stacking stations while increasing the total output, eliminating pellet stacking as a bottleneck in the fuel bundle assembly process.

Introduction At a time when the mineral-bearing areas in Manitoba are being fi very keenly explored because of the major developments which are now taking place in that Province, it may be timely to give an analysis of the mineralization in the two major types of deposits, with a view particularly to assist in the intensive prospecting to which the mineral-bearing areas in the Province are now to be subjected. As is already well known, there are two principal types of mineral deposits in the territory- copper-zinc and gold; and attention will be confined almost exclusively in this paper to these two types, with some indication of such modifications of the main types as may be found to be of economic value. The details of the paper are drawn from what is yet a small part of the area of the Province available for prospecting. Enough is now known of the types of mineral deposits which are described in the following pages to justify the expectation that these types may serve as criteria in the search in the newer districts. Doubtless new types will also be found as investigations proceed.

Arsenical bearing deposits are posing an increasing challenge for the mining industry. In particular, mineral processing of arsenical sulfidic ores for base and precious metals recovery tend to produce problematic arsenical tailings. This arsenic being present as sulphide or oxide, tends to dissolve, contaminating surface and underground waters. To meet the environmental regulations, it is often required to stabilize the arsenic in a more insoluble form. Nichromet has developed a new patented technology using vitrification of the arsenic oxide in an economical way, giving a stable solid, well below the environmental regulations upon leaching. This technology involves oxidation of As (III) to As (V), by using a low cost natural oxidizer and transformation of the produced arsenic oxide into calcium arsenate, which is not volatile at the melting temperature of the glass. This technology would be advantageously applied on most cases around the world where sulphide concentrates are oxidized in a fluidized bed or smelted.

"In 1986, anomalous sampling results for heavy minerals were obtained at various sites in Namaqualand on the west coast of the Cape Province. Drilling in 1987 at Graauwduinen penetrated up to 35 meters of heavy mineral-bearing Tertiary sands which extend several kilometers inland from the coast. The heavy mineral suite includes ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite, along with gamet, pyroxene and amphibole. Three deposits are recognized, two of which comprise the resource to be mined by Namakwa Sands Limited, a recently formed Anglo American Corporation subsidiary company.Mineable reserves in excess of 500 million tonnes have been delineated, sufficient to sustain mining for over 35 years at projected production rates. During the feasibility study, on-site investigations included test mining at various sites to assess rnineability and to provide material for metallurgical testing in a pilot plant located at the site. llmenite produced at the mine will be smelted at a new facility to be built at Saldanha Bay. Saleable products comprise titania-rich slag, pig iron, zircon and rutile.During the exploration phase, company environmental guidelines were established and monitored. The feasibility study incorporated a Class 1 Environmental Impact Report, the contents of which were made public following the principles of the Integrated Environmental Management legislation."

Originally developed as a step change in ultrafine grinding efficiency, the IsaMill™ has made inroads into conventional ball mill and tower mill mainstream grinding duties during the last 5 years - beginning with the Anglo Platinum mainstream grinding projects in South Africa. At the 2006 SAG Conference, plant testwork on the incorporation of IsaMill™ technology into the McArthur River (Northern Territory, Australia) Pb/Zn primary grinding circuit was reported. The IsaMill™ has now become an integral component of that circuit, treating up to 1mm top size feed and directly producing P80 45 µm rougher flotation feed. Two 1.1 MW IsaMills™ are now used in this duty contributing to a 27% increase in overall plant throughput and a reduction in rougher feed size distribution. In this paper, we report on the current state of development and performance of the IsaMill™ in the primary grinding duty at McArthur River and also consider future directions.

Abstract - Metalliferous precipitates from submarine hydrothermal discharges have been investigated at four inshore locations off Milos in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc. The fine fraction of the sediments shows considerable variability in the concentrations of elements frequently associated with hydrothermal activity. Manganese varies from 30 ppm to 2500 ppm, encompassing the entire range of values found off Santorini also in the Hellenic Arc. Iron occurs in lower concentrations than off Santorini and Yali, while other elements often associated with hydrothermal activity such as Pb, Zn, As, and Cu also show enrichments in sediments from the hydrothermal vent areas. Selective leaching studies have shown that most elements are variably distributed between the different phases of the sediments but with enriched Pb, Zn, and Mn mainly in easily soluble secondary phases. Hydrothermal inputs are strongest at Palaeochori Bay, less at Voudia Bay and lowest at the Airport Springs and Rivari. The weathering of sulfide and possibly other orebodies is also thought to contribute to some of the elements enriched, while background concentrations are largely supplied from detrital sources.

"In March 1993, Ram Raising Limited was faced with a challenge. Placer Dome Incorporated, Dome Mine Division requested from Ram Raising that they design station excavation into the existing No. 8 shaft from No. 3 mine levels. This work had to be done without loss of production time in the underground department.Due to the time frame of the project, every detail had to be carefully considered, with extra care that all pros and cons had been worked out.Ram Raising submitted a work Plan that had been worked out with the Redpath Group which included the infrastructure requirements; the engineering design; the scheduling and sequence of work; and the excavation design and blasting procedures.A proposal was&apos; put together by both Ram Raising and Placer Dome outlining the infrastructure requirements, including the engineering design, scheduling and sequence of the work, excavation design and blasting procedures. The proposal accepted by Placer Dome and, on July 3D, 1993 work commenced to breakthrough eight stations. Work continued until December 1993 with the completion off our stations. The project was then stopped to allow the station access drifts from No.3 mine to be completed. The second phase of the project began on May 27 and was completed on September 15, 1994.This paper shows how, through innovative design and the full cooperation between client and contractor, a project of this nature can be completed successfully."
