"On the mining side the Canadian oil sands industry has become proficient in excavation and disposal of ore and overburden. Nearly twenty years of mining experience is now behind this industry. While local improvements to existing mining systems and practices will continue, it is believed that some further gains in productivity can be achieved by selectively introducing new ideas from other mining and non-mining industries. This type of technology transfer is vital for over-all cost-effective technology enhancement of oil sands mining operations.Discussed in this paper are the issues of mining equipment, equipment sizing, microprocessor and computer based technol¬ogy as applied to mine-wide data management, automation and remote control and a projection of likely mining systems in the year 2000!This paper reviews the ""state-of-the-art"" in selected surface mining systems and attempts to evaluate the forthcoming technology and its application."

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. It might be asked why the power factor of an electrical installation in a mine, or a factory, should be corrected at all, but there is a simple answer. The efficiency of the froth flotation process has long been known to be strongly dependent on particle size. For sulfide minerals, good recoveries are typically achieved in industrial flotation circuits for particles in the 30 to 200 µm size range. Particles outside this critical size are typically lost in industrial operations and rejected to tailings streams due to inherent constraints associated with the physical interactions that occur in the pulp and froth phases of conventional flotation equipment. In response to these limitations, a series of experimental studies were conducted to determine whether particles previously lost as tailings could be economically recovered using a suite of novel flotation technologies developed for upgrading ultra-coarse and ultra-fine particles in the industrial minerals industry. For the case of ultracoarse particles, a fluidized-bed flotation system called the HydroFloatTM separator was tested. The data obtained using this novel flotation device in both laboratory- and pilot-scale trials showed that good recovery of previously lost sulfide values up to 850 µm diameter could be achieved. Similarly, for ultrafine particles, a high-intensity cavitation-based column cell was tested. This technology, which utilizes highshear contacting of slurry and gas, was capable of recovering valuable ultra-fine sulfide that were previously lost due to the low capture efficiency of conventional flotation processes. The objectives of this article are (i) to describe the unique operating principles of these two advanced flotation technologies and associated ancillary classification equipment, (ii) to present laboratory- and pilot-scale experimental test data showing the metallurgical benefits of the proposed novel flowsheet for sulfide tailings processing, and (iii) to provide a generic cost-benefit analysis of the proposed system for recovering lost values in existing sulfide tailing streams.

"Recently, a number of major mining companies seemed unable to find a president from within the industry, and were searching outside the industry. From this, one could conclude that managers within the industry are either not being prepared or are not preparing themselves for presidential responsibility. Opinions were sought from a number of senior executives, to attempt to define the skills a prospective president should acquire and what actions a company could take or that a prospective president could take to acquire these skills.This paper contains summaries of the opinions obtained, along with the author's comments. The paper also describes the actions some companies are taking and the actions that an aspiring president can take to prepare himself for corporate management.IntroductionA manager is promoted up the management ladder when the manager's superiors believe that he is capable of handling a more senior position. Normally, the manager acquires this credibility by outstanding performance in his current management post, whether it be in a junior management (supervisory) or in a vice-presidential capacity.In most instances, the skills required for promotion can be acquired in the current position or, at worst, the abilities exhibited in a candidate's current role will convince his superiors that the necessary expertise for the more senior position can be acquired on-the-job. This is particularly the case when the new skills are felt to be an extrapolation of the old skills.However, in the case of appointment to presidential rank, there appears to be a need for new expertise which often is not acquired in normal management progression or, at least, boards of directors of some mining companies seem to believe this to be the case. The objective of this paper is to attempt to define the new skills that should be acquired by a manager who aspires to be the president, and to describe what actions might be taken by him to acquire them."

"The key words which characterize vanadium are: unlimited availability, versatility of applications and price stability. The supply of vanadium is assured by diversified sources, distributed all over the globe. The inexhaustible raw materials base is complemented by a strong vanadium industry. Both the fully integrated vanadium producers and converters of vanadium oxide or vanadium-containing slags or residues guarantee an adequate supply, commensurate with the steady growing demand.The major share of the world's vanadium output is being consumed by the steel industry. As an additive to steel, the versatility of vanadium is particularly impressive. A few hundreds of one per cent of vanadium convert plain carbon steel into high-strength, low-alloy steel with more than double strength. On the other extreme, high-speed steels made via the powder metallurgy route show superior performance with vanadium additions as high as 6 or 8 percent. Vanadium is used as a cost-effective alloying addition in steels for high-temperature service, fully alloyed heat-treatable steels, new dual-phase steels for automotive components, rail steels, etc., to mention only a few applications. Vanadium is also an established essential addition for titanium alloys. The chemical industry is relying on vanadium compounds as important catalysts.In spite of a wide diversity of applications and continual growth in consumption, vanadium has exhibited, over the past several decades, a remarkable price stability, free of conjunctural fluctuations. Shipping and stevedoring industry is going to witness a massive increase in the amount of containers to be handled while land constraints become more critical. Offshore transfer operations hence offer a preferable solution to deal with the surge in cargos rather than to expand the port outwards. Recently, there has been increasing research interests on offshore crane automation. Suspended cargos in a ship-mounted crane system are caused to swing due to the vibratory motion of the ship induced by ocean waves, which can lead to collision between cargos and deck. Therefore, it is vital for offshore crane systems to satisfy rigorous requirements in terms of safety and efficiency. This paper presents the modelling and control development for offshore boom crane systems. A second-order sliding mode control law is proposed for trajectory tracking and sway suppression control, making use of its capability of actuator chattering alleviation while achieving high tracking performance and preserving strong robustness. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov sense. Simulation results indicate that the proposed controller can significantly reduce the effect of disturbances coming from gusty waves and other dynamic loadings.

Nuclear power reactors using zirconium alloy pressure tubes generate electricity in several countries. Such reactors are particularly important in Ontario, where CANDUs* generate about 30% of the total electricity produced in the Province. Starting with the commitment of NPD-2 in 1956, the pressure tubes of the first five CANDU reactors were made of coldworked Zircaloy-Z, an alloy of Zr and Sn. This alloy was developed by the US Navy, but the decision to use it in a cold-worked condition was based on AECL work. In 1958, the USSR published information on a new alloy, Zr-2.5 wt% Nb. The Nb promotes stabilization of the (3-phase in the material, thus presenting opportunities of exploiting metallurgically strong pressure tubes analogous to the heat-treatable cx-{3 titanium alloys. After construction of two reactors using Zr-2.5 wt% Nb in a quenched and aged condition, an extensive development program on cold-worked Zr-2.5 wt% Nb pressure tubes resulted in them becoming the reference tubes for all CANDU reactors committed since 1966. Anticipating the future needs of the domestic and export markets, AECL have pressure tubes of Zr-3.3 wt% Sn-0.8 wt% Nb-0.8 wt% Mo (Excel) in an advanced state of development. These tubes will be used in an annealed condition; our projections show that they will have improved dimensional stability over the lifetime of the reactors. These improvements result from experimental programs leading to an understanding of the relationship between microstructures and fabrication variables and effects of the environment during service in nuclear reactors.

"The Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit is located on the northern rim of the Athabasca Basin. The uranium mineralization is, for the most part, confined to the Athabasca Group, which is underlain by pre-Helikian metamorphic rocks of the Western Craton.The deposit is characterized by a remarkable train of mineralized glacial erratics which led to the original discovery. The mineralization is present as a ""high-grade"" core and a diffuse ""low-grade"" aureole. The ""high-grade"" core occurs as a stockwork of steeply dipping pitchblende veins which strike N 50°E. Hematite, siderite and secondary silicate are also abundant. The ""low-grade"" aureole contains uraniferous goethite, argillaceous material and rare carbon buttons. Recent alteration to coffinite has taken place along the margins of pre-existing ore minerals.The ""high-grade"" core is 390 m long and 10 to 40 m wide, and is surrounded by an irregularly shaped zone of ""low-grade"" mineralization with a similar length and a width of up to 350 m.Comparing the Fond-du-Lac deposit to other unconformity-type deposits, several important differences can be noted:1. Ninety per cent of the ore is above the unconformity, in the Athabasca sandstone.2. The deposit is not associated with underlying graphitic rocks or a major structure.3. The clay-rich alteration zone is not extensive around the Fond-du-Lac deposit.Although there are differences with other Athabasca unconformity-type deposits, the high-grade portion below the unconformity suggests a common origin.The ore deposit is postulated to have been formed from uranium-bearing solutions which entered the stockwork of fractures. Following the reduction in part of these solutions by pre-existing carbonaceous matter and pyrite and/or chemical reaction with pre-existing hematite, deposition continued as a result of decreasing temperature and pressure. Subsequently, minor supergene redistribution of the uranium has taken place."

"Selected methods of pressure loss predictions in horizontal slurry flow in pipelines are presented. For a given combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, the slurry and its flow conditions are described, and an appropriate method of pressure loss prediction is outlined. The wide range of conditions treated in this paper may be found in practice in areas varying from the hydraulic transport of low concentration slurries to dense-phase conveying of paste backfill in underground mines.IntroductionThe hydraulic conveying of solid particles in pipelines is a major component of the mining and mineral processing industry. Whether the objective is to transport ore to the processing plant or to make use of mill tailing as backfill material; the need for well designed, economical hydraulic conveying systems is recognized.The contribution of this paper is part of an on-going research program at McGill University involved in optimizing and developing techniques for total mine waste disposal. One of the main concerns in the conveying of solid-liquid mixtures is the prior knowledge of the pumping power input required. This energy requirement is directly proportional to the pressure losses incurred in the pipeline system. Understanding the sources of such pressure losses and predicting their magnitudes should enable the system designer to make informed decisions regarding the optimum mode of hydraulic transportation commensurate with the over-all requirements of the operation.This paper is an attempt to classify pressure loss prediction methods encountered in the literature for solid-liquid mixtures. In spite of the large number of publications spanning thirty years of research in the field of slurry transportation, it is sometimes difficult to correctly identify the appropriate methods applicable to a given situation. This is partly due to the inherent complexity of the mechanics of slurry flow and the ensuing uncertainty about the nature of the flow regime under investigation.Our approach is to use three fundamental parameters, namely: flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size (for solid particles with a given density) to characterize the slurry and the flow conditions, and to match them with an adequate pressure loss prediction method. For each combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, a description of the most likely prevalent flow conditions and some known methods of dealing with them will be presented. Qualitative definitions of ""high"" and ""low"" magnitudes of the aforementioned parameters will be given as a general guide to the classification scheme presented in this paper."

"This paper reviews the complete cycle of a small mining operation in a remote section of northern British Columbia, including discovery, exploration, development and production. The discovery of high-grade epithermal gold-silver mineralization occurred in 1969 following a regional geochemical reconnaissance program designed to search for porphyry copper mineralization in the Cassiar-Omineca Mountains. Exploration and development from 1971 to 1979 included geological, geochemical and geophysical surveys; trenching, almost 30 000 feet of surface and underground drilling in about 100 holes and cross-cutting, drifting and raising on the principal goldsilver- bearing vein. This led to the delineation of 100000 tons at an estimated grade of0.9 oz gold per ton and 18 oz silver per [on to an average depth of 120 feet below surface. of a 100-ton per day mining operation employing about 50 personnel with all supporting infrastructure transported to the site by a Hercules aircraft. The operation was subsequently supported by its own Twin Otter aircraft with periodic Hercules campaigns supplying major items including fuel.The mining operation included both open-pit and cut-and-fill methods. The milling operation employed conventional cyanide leach process with cyanide destruction initially by alkali chlorination and subsequently by the Inco SOl /Air process.The fly-in operation, initially structured on a 21-day-in and 7-day-out basis was modified to al-t-day-in and Z-day-out basis with no loss in efficiency and with a significant increase in employee satisfaction. The operation, which earned the B.C. Small Mines Safety A ward in two consecutive years in its Ll-month operating history, emphasized safety and process hazard awareness. Wildlife studies in the environmentally sensitive mine area also showed that industry and wildlife can coexist in harmony.Most importantly, the paper compares the feasibility assumptions with actual operating experience."

In this paper, the rectangular strands of Incoloy 800 superalloy were fabricated with a pilot vertical continuous caster in Northeastern University, China. In the processing, an electromagnetic stirring (EMS) is applied on the secondary cooling zone to control the solidifying structure and segregation of elements in the strands. The solidification structure of Incoloy 800 superalloy strands were investigated at different electric parameters and casting parameters. The research results show that the EMS can effectively restrain the dendrite growth and increase the ratio of equiaxed grains in Incoloy 800 superalloy strands as applied a suitable electric parameters and cooling condition in the process of continuous casting. The evolution of dendrite crystallization in Incoloy 800 alloy strands from the surface to its center during the solidifying process was investigated with and without EMS.

Abstract -The Riviera tungsten occurrence in the Cape Province of South Africa was discovered in October 1979 as a result of stream-sediment panned concentrate sampling. The Cape age granite and late Precambrian Malmesbury Group carbonates and chlorite schists which it intrudes and which host the mineralization are covered by between 10 m and 30 m of Tertiary/Recent alluvium and clay. The scheelite/powellite and molybdenite mineralization occurs in a greisenized granite cupola with an overprint of porphyry-type alteration as well as in minor skarns. The ore reserve is estimated to be 46 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.2160Jo W03 and 0.020% Mo. The deposit is uneconomic at current tungsten prices.

However, this productivity is now, more than ever, dependent on the continued operation of the equipment. A prolonged breakdown of a critical component can have a significant effect on companies' bottom-line results. As more technologically sophisticated equipment is introduced, maintenance costs become an increasingly important factor for mining companies.Fortunately, sound modern management principles are being used more often in maintenance departments. Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) has been proven to be an excellent candidate as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) for hot sections in, for instance, heat or internal engines and gas turbine parts. The main functions of these coatings are reduction of heat losses, reduction of fuel consumption, increasing efficiency, and extending durability and life. One of the main problems involved is wear behavior in the development of such coatings for these applications. Using air plasma spraying (APS) technique, conventional and nanostructured 8 wt % yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) coatings were deposited on austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304) disc-shaped substrates. The coated substrates were subjected to pin-on-disc wear tests, using 10 mm silicon nitride and zirconia balls as the pin. The coefficient of friction was recorded in real time. The weight loss of coated substrates was measured. Coatings were characterized before and after being subjected to wear testing by various techniques including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Effects of various experimental parameters such as wear distance, test temperature, and counterface material were also investigated. Results obtained revealed that, regardless of experimental conditions applied, the nanostructured zirconia coating shows better wear and tribological properties than those of the conventional one.

"Although the April 19, 1983 federal budget appears to put greater emphasis on new or expanded government spending programs in an effort to get Canadians working again, the budget proposals contain a light sprinkling of tax changes which could be of some direct benefit to the mining industry.This month, Tax Notes examines some of the more important of these changes.IntroductionSome sectors of Canada's mining industry could benefit from the proposed income tax changes announced by Finance Minister Lalonde in delivering his budget address to the House of Commons on April 19, 1983. Improved depletion allowance rules, expanded investment tax credits, better use of business losses, and inflation proofing of personal capital gains on Canadian common shares are all part of the measures included in Mr. Lalonde's first budget to try to reinvigorate the battered Canadian economy.Improved DepletionUnder the Income Tax Regulations, a taxpayer who incurs Canadian exploration expense (and certain other eligible expenses) is permitted to deduct not only the full amount of the Canadian exploration expense (""CEE""), but also an additional allowance (the so-called earned depletion allowance) equal to one-third of the CEE. Thus, a taxpayer in certain circumstances can claim a deduction of $1.33 for each $1.00 of eligible expenditure, including CEE.Although CEE can be deducted from any source of the taxpayer's income (for example, from investment income, salary income, and so on), prior to budget date the earned depletion allowance was deductible only from the taxpayer's resource profits. This restriction on the deductibility of the earned depletion allowance substantially reduced the attraction of the allowance: few individual investors or investment companies, for example, have the required stream of resource profits, at least when the CEE or other eligible expenditure is made."

"The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

"The Quebec Mining Association has for many years been supportive of the activities of the Centre de recherches minérales which were initiated to ensure regular production hoist and cable inspections to maintain safety and productivity standards in underground mines in Quebec. CRM and CANMET have agreed to fund a Quebec Mineral Development Agreement contract to capture this accumulated knowledge. Using VP-EXPERT to process the information and subdirectories to store regulations, the prototype access D-BASE III records on hoist information and LOTUS 123for simulating working conditions that meet local regulations and expert rules of thumb criteria. Objectives are to improve safety in emergency operating procedures, maximize hoist productivity and safety, and promote knowledge transfer to operators."

"New terrain maps provide information on the ground conditions in northern Ontario. This information has a relevance to mineral exploration because it assists the user in determining ground conditions prior to entering the area. The prospector, geologist, geophysicist and geochemist can then plan for the optimum use of exploration techniques best suited for theseground conditions.These terrain maps are the result of the Northern Ontario Engineering Geology Terrain Study-a program carried out by five consultants under contract to the Ontario Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The area mapped is 370,000 km2 and more than 100 basic data maps at a1:100,000 scale will be published.An unique terrain legend was derived to facilitate the mapping and it allows the derivation of specific user information. Examples of some of these uses are described. Introduction""Where did all the boulders come from Charlie?"", asked the student, as the prospector and his young assistant clambered through the bush. "" Why son, they were brought down here by the glacier"", the prospector replied. ""But where is the glacier now Charlie? "", persisted the young man. ""Gone back up north for more boulders son!""An old story, but one that illustrates the importance of overburden to the prospector. The use of overburden as a prospecting technique is not new. In fact, the principles have been known in the western world for at least 235 years (Shilts 1976). More recently, Dreimanis's classic work on boulder tracing (1957) and Lee's work (1971) emphasize the role of glacial geology in prospecting. In addition, papers by Smee and Sinha (1979), Averill (1978), Bereton (1978), and Gleeson and Hornbrook (1974) all describe the importance of drift in mineral exploration programs. The discovery of the copper deposit in the northern Ontario township of Currie (Thompson, 1979) is attributed in part to till prospecting methods. So the significance of the overburden is firmly established, both in the literature and in the minds of today's prospectors, geologists, geophysicists and geochemists."
