The factors affecting the precipitation of arsenic-free alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6) were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. Although the amount of alunite precipitated increased with increasing retention time, temperature, solution pH and the concentrations of Al(SO4)1.5 or K2SO4, the composition of the products remained nearly constant. The preferred conditions identified for the precipitation of arsenic-free alunite were then used to assess the behaviour As(III) and As(V) during alunite precipitation at 98°C. Increasing additions of As(III), as NaAsO2 or As2O3, resulted in a slight increase in the amount of precipitate formed at pH 2.80. However, X-ray diffraction analysis showed all the precipitates to be alunite, and <0.2% As(III) was detected in the products. In contrast, increasing additions of As(V), as KH2AsO4 or As2O5, resulted in significant increases in the amount of precipitate formed at pH 2.80 or 3.00. Furthermore, the arsenate (AsO43-) contents of the precipitates increased up to 15%, and the sulphate contents decreased, as the As(V) concentration of the synthesis solution increased from 0 to 9 g/L. X-ray diffraction analysis of the products detected only alunite, but there was a progressive expansion of the alunite cell with increasing arsenate content. The implication is that arsenate substitutes for sulphate in the alunite structure. Preliminary observations on the environmental stability of the arsenate-bearing alunite using the TCLP protocol gave solubilities <0.4 mg/L from a precipitate containing 8.5% AsO4 and 7.8 mg/L from a product containing 19.5% AsO4. Thus, it appears that alunites containing less than -10% AsO4 would be an acceptable vehicle for the disposal of arsenic from hydrometallurgical processing solutions.

Digital photogrammetry allows rapid, remote measurement of millions of points, thus providing an unprecedented amount of spatial information. Research is being conducted to explore practical applications of digital photogrammetry for monitoring, surveying and mapping in surface mines. The performance, accuracy and operational ease of digital photogrammetry are discussed and practical aspects of conducting digital photogrammetry surveys are reviewed. Case histories from coal, diamond and limestone mines are presented.

We modeled mode I fracture in shale with an equivalent damage zone (CDM), a cohesive zone (CZM) and discontinuous enrichment functions (XFEM). In the Differential Stress Induced Damage model (DSID model) used in the continuum approach the total work input is equal to the sum of the energy released by crack debonding, the energy dissipated by crack opening, and the elastic strain energy stored in the bulk outside of the damage zone. In CZM and XFEM, the overall stiffness of the rock mass in the process zone drops as soon as the fracture starts propagating (unstable fracture propagation), whereas rock elastic properties in the CDM equivalent damage zone evolve smoothly with the displacement imposed at the boundary of the domain. In the CZM and XFEM, fracture propagation stabilizes after a turning point: this point coincides with damage initiation in the DSID model. As a result, the total energy of the rock mass calculated with CDM is about twice as large as in CZM and XFEM. The relative energy components of the rock mass are in the same order of magnitude and follow the same trends in the three models. This numerical study compares the evolution of dissipated energy potentials during mode I fracture propagation, and is expected to provide a basis to predict the amount of energy released by discrete fracture growth vs. damage propagation in the fracture process zone.

A detailed mineralogical study was carried out to characterize the products generated in a conventional copper refinery anode slimes treatment circuit. The anode slimes, which are first leached in sulphuric acid media under an oxygen pressure to dissolve the copper and much of the tellurium, were found to contain various Ag-Cu selenides, PbSO4, Ag, Au and BaSO4. The resulting Ag2Se, Ag3AuSe2, Se, Au, PbSO4, BaSO4, SnO2 and silicate-rich leach residue is dried and pelletized. It is subsequently roasted to convert the selenium to Ag2SeO3, volatile SeO2 and water soluble Na2SeO4. The roasted product, which was found to consist of Ag2Se, PbSe, PbSO4, BaSO4, Ag3AuSe2, Au and Sn02, is smelted and refined in a Dore furnace to produce a Dore metal that contains a (Ag,Au,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy together with traces of CuO and a Cu-Pb oxide phase. Parting plant mud shown to contain AgC1, Ag, Au, (Au,Ag,Pd), Ag2Cu2O3 and Ag20, and scrubber mud containing PbSO4 and AgC1 are also fed to the Dore furnace. The Dore furnace sequentially separates a silica slag which was found to consist of Ag, Sn02, BaSO4, Pb-Sb oxide, Fe-Sb-Ni-Cr oxide and a Pb-rich silicate phase, a soda-rich slag containing Na2CO3.H2O and Na2(Se,Te)03, and a niter slag containing Na2TeO3, Na2(Se,Te)03 and a Na-Te-Se-Pb-Ba-Cu oxide phase. The Dore metal is electrorefined in Moebius cells to yield high-purity silver and a gold mud which was shown to consist of a (Au,Ag,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy and traces of CuO. Silver is leached from the gold mud and the resulting gold sand is cast into anodes and electrorefined in Wohlwill cells to produce pure gold.

"Radium is selectively leachable from uranium ores with various types of lixiviants. Among a number of lixiviants tried on Midwest Lake uranium ore, KCl provided the highest per cent of radium extraction (60%-65%). Leach results further confirmed that a certain portion of Ra is not amenable to KCl leaching. More than 99% of the dissolved radium could be removed by treating the KCl leach liquor with barite or with radium selective complex resin (XFS-43230 resin of Dow Chemical Inc.) or by precipitating as RaBaSO4. Uranium leachings from the Ra-preleached uranium ores indicate that radium leaching prior to uranium may be applied as an extension to the conventional or alternative (i.e. acid chloride) leaching process of uranium ores in order to yield environmentally acceptable tailings (in terms of radium in the solids).IntroductionAt present, radium is considered as an environmental issue, particularly for uranium ore mine mill operations, rather than a commercial commodity. Radium was once a highly priced commodity ($180/mg during the first great war) but now it hardly has any commercial value. Its principal applications were in the field of cancer treatment and in the manufacturing of lwninous dials for watches. Nowadays readily-available synthetic radioisotopes are finding applications in place of radium.Because of scarcity and high toxicity, further commercial applications have never been explored.Radium was first discovered and extracted from uranium ore by P. Curie, M. Curie and G. Bement in 1898. Radium is widely distributed in nature but in exceedingly minute quantities. It is one of the daughter products of uranium or thorium and its maximum concentration is 3.3 x 10-7 part/part of U(21). Because of its short half-life (approximately 1620 years) in a geological time scale, its occurrence in nature as a distinct mineral is most unlikely.The details of the original radium leaching process developed by the Curies and Bernont are in the literature. This process essentially involved the roasting of uranium ore with caustic. carbonate followed by sulphuric acid leaching. The precipitated RaSO4 and BaS04 were treated with boiling Na2CO3 to convert them into the corresponding carbonates which later were dissolved in HCI. RaCI2 and Ba02 were separated and concentrated from the chloride liquor by fractional crystallization. But, in the course of time several modifications were made or proposed to the original process. Regardless of the process employed 226Ra extraction from the uranium ore was seldom better than 90%, and further as much as 20% 2URa loss took place during the concentration and purification process."

Based on his involvement on a variety of projects, Tony Lipiec will relate his experiences as the impact of 4 factors: the ‘team’ involved in the design and execution of the project; the project and information systems supporting the project; the impact of scope, time, and budget; and finally the selection of the proper success criteria to judge the project and the people who have enacted the project.The discussion of the team will relate to the quality of people and the impact of their knowledge, attitude and experience. It will also look at the relationships and interests of the various stakeholders. Decision making and taking responsibility will be discussed.Supporting the team are the management, document and information systems. The value that these systems bring to the project as a whole will be examined. How project size impacts the applicability of the systems will be discussed.Scope, time and budget are recognized as critical. Reference will be made to the interplay between these components which are vital to project success. The issue of iterative design and whether it is necessary will be considered together with the development of supporting technical information.Finally the selection of the proper success criteria and the awards provided to the team can have a big impact on the final, production success of the project. The author will discuss his views on the impacts of these on EPCM projects."

"La Mine Doyon est une entreprise détenue à parts égales par Cambior Inc. et par Minerais Lac Ltée qui en est l'opérateur. Les statistiques de production au 1"" janvier 1990 indiquent que, depuis le début de son exploitation (1980), 10.3 Mt de minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 5,9 g Au/t ont été usinées. Les réserves sont estimées a 10,4 Mt à une teneur moyenne de 6,6 g Au/t jusqu' à une profondeur de-450m.Trois zones minéralisées sont présentement en exploitation. Ces zones sont caractérisées par la présence de veines de quartz-pyrite accompagnées localement de chalcopyrite. Les roches encaissantes sont les schistes a séricite (zone# 1), les roches volcaniclastiques de composition felsique (zone #2) et intermédiaire (zone #2, zone ouest) ainsi que les roches intrusives appartenant au pluton de Mooshla (zone ouest). Toutes ces roches ont subi un métamorphisme régional dont l'intensité correspond à la limite supérieure du facies schiste vert ( -425°C}.Les zones minéralisées sont situées à I' intérieur des zones de déformation et d'altération les plus intenses. L'étude des structures mineures nous indique que la région a subi plusieurs épisodes de déformation ductile a fragile qui sont antérieurs, contemporains et postérieurs al a minéralisation. L'analyse structurale indique également que la déformation majeure est associée à une importante phase de compression orientée N-S a NNE-SSW.L’ensemble des observations suggère que la minéralisation et I' altération associée sont de type épigénétique. La mise en place du minerai se serait effectuée à la fin de l'épisode principal de métamorphisme et de la déformation."

The property of the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company, Limited is located at Flin Flon lake, 85 miles northwest of The Pas, Manitoba, on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary. The area is at latitude North 54°, and is approximately 1,000 feet above sea level. The ore-body occurs in amygdaloidal greenstones, which are to be referred to the earliest basic volcanic flows in the district. It was discovered in an outcrop on a point of land jutting into Flin Flon lake, and subsequent diamond drilling proved that it extends under the lake both to the north and south of the point of discovery. After the taking of soundings from the ice during the winter months, it was estimated that l,000,000 tons of overburden, mainly mud and clay, would have to be removed to expose the underlying ore. Flat diamond-drill holes indicated that the ore-body was separated into more or less independent lenses by horses of unmineralized greenstone, and that in places the overall width, including horses of waste, reached 450 feet. These several] conditions were the main factors influencing the management in their decision to adopt an open-cut method for the mining of the upper portion of the ore-body. Before it was possible to commence stripping operations, it was necessary to dam-off the eastern portion of Flin Flon lake, instal pumps, and de-water the dammed-off area. Dams for this purpose were constructed of mine waste rock and clay filler from nearby hillsides. Material for the bottoms of the dams was taken across Flin Flon lake in hopper-bottom barges. Trestles were then built on the dam bottoms and dams were complete by the time trackage was available. De-watering commenced in April, 1930, and was completed by the latter part of May of the same year. Estimated pump output for the period was roughly four billion gallons. Two Morris 10-inch dredging pumps were used, direct-connected to 250 h.p. electric motors. Individual pump capacity was rated at 3,000 g.p.m. against a 150-foot head. Average head for the operation was 50 feet, which increased the total output considerably. The pumps were mounted on floating barges in cribbings of piling driven at the lowest points in the lake bottom.

"ABSTRACT:-A 60—cm semiautogenous grinding-(SAG) mill was designed -for continuous wet operation in closed circuit with a vibrating screen. The circuit is fully instrumented and automated. Part of the control system incorporates Foxboro SPEC 200 controllers around the pump box to maintain level. The rest of the control system involves an ACTION model BC2 basic direct digital controller that handles all other inputs/outputs and contact closure sensing:·The success of the control system is attributed to the uniqueness of specially designed mass flow metering systems. Various control strategies are possible. Employed to date has been control of a mill load set-point by cascading the deviation from load set-point as the set-point to the fresh feed rate ""controller"". Mill feed water is ratioed to total flow rate of solids fed to the mill. The performance of the circuit is being correlated with the performance of full scale SAG circuits in British Columbia to develop models, to assess the feasibility of scale up and to investigate the effects of design variables on responses such as circuit throughput. 1 INTRODUCTIONWhere ore types are appropriate, semiautogenous grinding and/or autogenous grinding (AG) has replaced conventional grinding. Secondary/Tertiary crushing plants are thereby eliminated so that capital expenditures are less and overall comminution costs can be lower (Barratt 1982). To establish the suitability of an ore for SAG circuits, pilot scale tests with 1.7 to 1.8 M diameter mills are often conducted. At least one test per ore type in a deposit has been necessary. Often, each test involves a large amount (up to 50 tonne) of sample, so that the testwork can be expensive and may discourage the use of SAG or AG circuits. However, MacPherson (1977) has employed a continuous 45 cm dry Aerofall mill circuit closed with screens and an air classifier to determine whether ores are suitable for SAG milling. The amount of sample per ore type is of the order of 60 kg or less. Thus an established SAG mill scale up procedure that employs small circuits is highly desirable.The purpose of this paper is to describe a small 60 cm wet continuous SAG/ AG mill pilot circuit assembled at the University of British Columbia to study the feasibility of scale up, to assess the influence of design variables, to develop mathematical models and to evaluate the effects of alternative control strategies on circuit performance"

The current paper is focused on evaluating the behavior of copper in a copper production slag and the assessment of metal recovery possibilities. For this reason, thermodynamic calculations were carried out to determine the influence of parameters such as slag composition, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on recovery of non-ferrous elements. It was found that the formation of a solid face centered cubic (fcc) phase, mainly consisting of iron, limits the extent of reduction that can be achieved for an industrial process. However, it could be discovered that solubility of iron in the Cu-rich liquid alloy strongly depends on presence of other elements, particularly arsenic. As part of the results of this study, the solubility of Cu in the slag at onset of fcc phase formation is presented as function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and concentration of MgO and CaO. It was concluded that lower temperature (1200°C) and higher CaO addition (16 mass-% in this study), would result in the highest achievable copper recovery from slag. INTRODUCTION Copper slag is produced as a by-product of the copper production process. The slag is still containing a high amount of copper and other valuable metals. This demands further treatment of the slag as a secondary source of metals. In addition, the physical/mechanical properties of slag allow its use in several applications such as hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, as an abrasive and many more. These applications help reducing the use of natural resources like rock and sand. By decreasing the content of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn and As in the slag, its application in abovementioned fields becomes more attractive as the probability of releasing these elements to the environment is further reduced. To develop a pyrometallurgical slag reduction process, it is necessary to understand what describes the end point of the reduction. This point is expected at maximum copper recovery without facing operational challenges. Existing literature provide some information on the effect of different parameters such as temperature or concentration of different slag formers, on solubility of copper and heavy metals in different phases. However, due to complexity of industrial slags, equilibrium experiments and accurate thermodynamic modelling are essential to be able to reliably predict the behavior of different elements in the system and determine the end-point of reduction.

"La Mine Doyon is a gold mining operation located in northwestern Quebec, approximately 35 km east of Rouyn-Noranda and 85 km west of Val d&apos;Or. The mine is jointly owned by Lac Minerals Ltd. and Cambior Inc. with Lac Minerals as the manager. Production statistics as of February 1987 are 6.4 million tonnes milled at an average grade of5.8 g/t Au. Current reserves of9.9 million tonnes at 5. 7 g/ t Au to a depth of400m have been outlined. Indicated reserves below this horizon could considerably increase this reserve.The mine currently consists of two open pit and two underground mine operations, producing approximately 3600 tonnes per day of ore at an average grade of6 g/t. The ore is currently processed at the La Mine Doyon mill at a rate of1400tid and at Lac&apos;s East Malartic mill at 1950 t/d. Ore is also processed intermittently at Lac&apos;s Les Terrains Auriferes mill and at Noranda&apos;s Horne Division.La Mine Doyon is currently in the midst of a program to expand and upgrade the mill at La Mine Doyon. The expansion to 3000 t/day includes the conversion of the existing crushing and grinding circuits to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill circuit and the existing filter wash plant to a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) recovery plant. The economics of this project are based on reduced operating costs (milling and trucking) and improved recovery due to updated technology. HistoryThe area between Noranda and Val d&apos;Or has a long history of mining activity in both base metals and gold, dating back to the early 1930s. More recently, several new orebodies have been discovered and exploited in the area including La Mine Doyon, Lac&apos;s Mine de Bousquet, Dumagami, and the Kiena operation.La Mine Doyon was discovered in the early 1970s, and brought into limited production in late 1979. The mine was started on are reserves of 2.75 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t and was, thus, considered a small, short-term operation. Mining started at an initial rate of 550 tI d with all the ore being shipped to Noranda&apos;s Horne smelter as flux. When Lac&apos;s East Malartic mill became available for custom milling, Doyon commenced shipping to that facility at a rate of 650 t/d. As a result of some equipment additions and an improved understanding of the ore, the East Malartic mill throughput was gradually increased from 650 t/d to the current rate of 1950 t/d."

"This paper deals with the reconciliation of open stope performance at Olympic Dam, South Australia, with a focus on stope stability, recovery, and operational aspects of stope reconciliation in relation to the expected or planned stope design. The observed stope performance is inconsistent with the equivalent linear overbreak sloughing criteria for assessing the performance of large open stopes. The aim is to investigate new stope performance criteria using quantitative (overbreak, underbreak, maximum depth of wall failure) and qualitative (stope productivity, observed fragmentation) information that correlates with the observed stope behaviour, providing a process for improving future stope designs.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article traite de la réconciliation de la performance des chambres ouvertes à Olympic Dam, Australie du Sud, en ciblant la stabilité des chambres, la récupération et les aspects opérationnels de la réconciliation des chambres par rapport à la conception attendue ou planifiée des chambres. La performance observée des chambres ne concorde pas avec les critères d’épaisseur équivalente du bris hors profil pour évaluer la performance de grandes chambres ouvertes. L’objectif est d’étudier de nouveaux critères de performance des chambres au moyen de données quantitatives (rupture hors profil, rupture à l’intérieur du profil planifié, profondeur maximale d’effondrement du mur) et qualitatives (productivité de la chambre, fragmentation observée) qui concordent avec le comportement observé des chambres, fournissant ainsi un processus pour améliorer les futures conceptions des chambres."

Mineral exploration and research has led to the identification of four types of tungsten mineralization in the NE-trending, Iargelyensialic, inland branch of the late Proterozoic/early Paleozoic Pan-African Damara Orogen. The mineralization (mainly scheelite) occurs in a terrane (the Central Zone) that is characterized by multiple deformation, greenschist/amphibolite-facies metamorphism and numerous peraluminous S-type granitic and pegrnatitic intrusions. The four major types of scheelite mineralization are (in ascending stratigraphic order of host rock): (1) thin (5 cm to 2 meter) quartz+plagioclase+diopside ± scapolite calc-silicate granofels with fmely disseminated scheelite (scheelite-bearing granofels; SBG) developed as discontinuous intercalations within the calc-silicate rocks of the Khan, Spes Bona, Oberwasser and Kuiseb Formations (Nosib and Swakop Groups); (2) gamet+pyroxene± vesuvianite+scheelite ± fluorite replacement skarns hosted by Okawayo, Karibib and lower Kuiseb Formation marbles in the aureoles of late tectonic, unrnineralized leucogranites; (3) metaturbidite-hosted scheelite- (and possibly wolframite-) bearing tourmalinites, both stratiform and crosscutting, in the Kuiseb Formation located in the &apos;cleavage fronts&apos; of late tectonic granitoids; (4) scheelite-bearing vesuvianite+quartz+garnet skarnoid rocks (several hundred meters in length) in the calcareous metaturbidites of the upper Kuiseb Formation. These scheelite occurrences were discovered by the follow-up of a large number of tungsten anomalies located during a regional stream sediment sampling program. Detailed mapping, ultra-violet surveys and rock sampling proved to be the most effective surface exploration techniques for locating mineralization; soil sampling and geophysics were of almost no use. The largest, continuous scheelite-bearing skarn of economic interest, Otjua, has a drill-indicated reserve of 250 000 tonnes at 0.53 wt5 WO3 and 8 wt% CaF2•

"The processes leading to the fall of rock compartments from rock walls are poorly known as well as their velocity. It ensues that quantitative prediction of the failure time for a rock compartment which is presently stable, is not possible by a purely geomechanical approach. However a quantitative probabilistic prediction of rockfalls at the scale of a rock wall is possible if the spatial-temporal rockfall frequency can be determined or estimated (Hantz, 2011). For a better knowledge of failure processes and frequency, rockfalls have been detected in several rock walls, using annual terrestrial laser scanning, allowing comparison of the frequencies in different geological conditions. For one of these rock walls, the spatial detection have been completed by a precise dating of the events, using a quasi-continuous photographic survey (one photo every 10 mn), allowing the study of the influence of meteorological factors.The precise dating of rockfalls has been carried out for the Saint-Eynard cliff which towers above a residential area of the town of Grenoble (French Alps). The South-East facing cliff consists in bedded limestone gently dipping North-West and located at an elevation between 850 m and 1100 m. The surveyed zone is about 750 m large and 250 m high. Between 01/02/2013 and 26/11/2013, 65 rockfalls ranging between 0.01 m3 and 20 m3, have been detected by diachronic comparison of laser scanner data and dated by comparison of photographic images. The temperature at the elevation of the cliff has been calculated from the temperature measured (every 5 mn) at a meteorological station located at an elevation of 245 m and 2.5 km away from the cliff, using a temperature gradient of 0.003°C/m (D’Amato et al., 2014). The precipitation were measured 900 m away from the cliff at an elevation of 469 m. Different meteorological conditions have been defined: (a) “freeze” qualifies days with negative mean temperature (but with a thaw period, except for two days); (b) “thaw” qualifies days with positive mean temperature, but following a freeze day; (c) “rain” qualifies days with precipitation.Table 1 shows the rockfall temporal frequency for the different meteorological conditions. It appears that the frequency is about 6 times higher the freeze days, 2.5 higher the thaw days and 3 times higher the rain days than days without freeze, thaw or rain."

"A market survey of all underground mines in Canada (Fig. 1) was completed to determine the ex1ent to which cable bolts are being used as ground support. One hundred and nine questionnaires were distributed with 65% of them being returned completed. As a result, the quantity, types and locations of cable bolt installations have been determined. In addition, the grout pumps used, time required and cost of installations have been addressed. The popularity of other support types used in underground mines is summarized.IntroductionRock reinforcement consists of installing support within the rock mass (internal) or within the excavation (external). Within the past twenty-five years several new types of ground support have been introduced within the mining industry. Cable bolts were first introduced to the Canadian mining industry in the 19605 (Gramoli, 1975).Cable bolts have gained increased acceptance as a method of ground support during the past decade. The cable bolt is comprised of one central wire surrounded by six slightly smaller outside wires and typically having an over-all diameter of 15.2 nun to 15.9 nun (0.6 in. to 0.625 in.). The cable wires are made from high-strength steel with an ultimate strength of 26 tonnes (58 000 Ibs) (Goris, 1990). Current cable bolting practice consists of cement grouting one or more steel cables within a drill hole in order to reinforce the surrounding rock mass. Cable bolts are a form of internal support and are generally used in open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods (Fig. 2).They can be either tensioned (active support) or untensioned (passive support) and may be of any length, though for underground mining applications, they are generally less than 20 m (65.5 ft) and are untensioned. A major advantage compared to previously used ground support is that the cables are flexible and can be coiled to approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) diameter coils allowing relatively long support to be installed in areas with limited head room (1.8 m).With the advent of bulk mining methods which require comparatively large stopes, it has necessitated the use of relatively long support tendons to stabilize the large spans being created. As a result, the use of cable bolts for ground support in mines has increased significantly within the past decade."

Altonorte began as a concentrate roasting operation in 1988 under the name of Refimet. In 1993, a copper smelter was built with a design capacity of 203,000 tonnes per annum of concentrate. Since 2001, many technological advances have been made in Altonorte, where the biggest Noranda Reactor in the world is installed being the first Noranda Reactor reaching above one million tonnes of copper concentrates processed per annum. In 2013, Altonorte was acquired by Glencore. Recently due to various new environmental regulations in Chile, Altonorte has evolved to new standards of operation in order to reach the vision of becoming a World Class Smelter. This paper describes the path followed to improve safety, environmental performance, process capacity, reliability, and productivity. The foundation for the growth and success in Altonorte is our People. Employee engagement and branding of our cultural journey is what allows Altonorte to face the future with the certainty of becoming a World Class Smelter. INTRODUCTION Altonorte is located in Antofagasta, the mining capital in the north of Chile and is the last smelter built in Chile practically completed with second hand equipment. The biggest technological change in Altonorte occurred during the phase 3 expansion in 2003, where the old Reverberatory furnace was shut down and replaced by the biggest Noranda Reactor installed in the world. The vessel measures 5.3 m × 26m. ºAdditionally, this project contemplated a new rotary dryer, three (3) new Peirce Smith converters, new anode furnaces and a new Acid plant. The nominal capacity was to treat 816.000 tons of new concentrate per year. In 2008, a new expansion phase was implemented where a new double absorption acid plant replaced the oldest acid plant. Bottlenecks such as blowing capacity and oxygen availability were solved installing a new air blower and a new contract was negotiated with our oxygen supplier to increase oxygen availability up to 683 tpd. This improvement defined the current nominal capacity of 1.100.000 ton of new concentrate per year. Current process description All concentrates are received by trucks directly from domestic mines or from the Antofagasta international port in cases of imported concentrates; the concentrate warehouse has a capacity of 25 kt where the blend is prepared to feed the smelter.

The major fluorite producer in British Columbia was the Rock Candy Mine, inactive since 1942. Other deposits of economic interest include the Rexspar deposit, in which fluorite is associated with uranium and rare earth mineralization, and the Eaglet and Liard River occurrences. THE former Rock Candy fluorite mine, located 26 km north of Grand Forks, is the only major past producer of fluorite in British Columbia. The deposit was in production from 1918 to 1929 and again in 1942; total output was about 36,000 tonnes with average grade between 22 and 32 per cent CaF2. The fluorite body occupies a steeply-dipping vein structure, approximately 175 m long and up to 12 m wide, in porphyritic syenite. The chief vein-filling minerals are quartz and fluorite with local small len ses of barite. Fluorite content decreases with depth and the deposit becomes silicified. The Rexspar (or Birch Island) fluorite deposit is located 130 km north of Kamloops. The deposit is complex with rare earth elements and high uranium values, but !1uorite mineralization forms an independent zone adjacent to the uranium orebodies. Fluorite is present as fine-grained impregnations and as breccia cement in strongly schistose or brecciated alkali feld spar porphyry. Reported reserves are 1,088,000 tonnes of 22 per cent CaF2 or 450,000 tonnes of 29 per cent CaF2. 268 Another potential deposit of fluorite is Eaglet, situated on the north side of Quesnel Lake. Fluorite occurs as a stock work with scattered veins and irregular lenses up to 20 centimetres wide and as impregnations in altered Proterozoic Kaza Group feld spathic gneiss over an area of 1,500 metres by 500 metres. To date (1983) approximately $2 million have been spent on the exploration of this property and reserves of 18.8 mimon tonnes grading 11.59 per cent CaF2 have been outlined . A group of significant occurrences is known from north of Liard River Hot Springs Park , where fluorite occurs in small zones up to 17 m thick along the interface between Middle Devonian Dunedin Formation limestone and Middle Devonian to Mississippian Besa River Formation argillite. Fluorite, associated with witherite, barytocalcite and barite, is present as replacement bodies, breccia fillings and minor veins.

"The distribution of gold in the grinding-classification circuit of an operating gold plant was determined by assaying the size fractions of samples from each of the streams. This analysis identified the streams with the maximum potential for gravity recovery of gold and revealed that there was up 110 seventy-five times as much gold in the primary cyclone underflow as in the concentrator feed.Laboratory jigging and tabling tests were done on samples from two of the streams to determine what the recovery might be with a gravity circuit and to show that a high grade concentrate could be produced. A numerical simulation procedure was used to calculate a material balance for a circuit that included gravity separation on the primary cyclone underflow. The numerical simulation optimistically indicated that as much as 84% of the gold might be recovered in a reasonable grade of concentrate even though the recovery in batch bench scale tests was only 14%.Incorporation of a gravity separation device would reduce the inventory of gold in the grinding-classification circuit.INTRODUCTIONMany gold concentrating plants include a gravity concentration operation while others do not and the reasons that some do and some do not is not clear. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of gravity circuits are discussed by Penman (Penman 1987) without clear cut resolution. Penman's comments elicited an interesting response from Lloyd (1989) who produced a simple way to determine if the addition of a gravity concentration circuit would enhance the recovery of gold. Lloyd's method does not consider the cost of running the circuit so it only partially answers the question. There are reports in the literature (Wells and Patel 1991, Matwijenko 1988) that as much as 60% of the entire production comes from a gravity circuit when it is used, and that the grade of the concentrate produced often exceeds 65% gold, an assay that far exceeds most Merrill-Crowe precipitates that are sent to refining. In at least one instance (Hood 1984) a range of recovery from 40-50% was indicated from laboratory test work and the plant subsequently realized recoveries in the range of 26-40%. Despite these favorable numbers other plants use gravity separation when as little as 20% of the gold is recovered in the gravity concentrate (Carter 1992)."

The Current demand for potash has pushed world prices to record levels and allowed Saskatchewan producers to operate at maximum capacity. Several years of strong demand has resulted in a permitting rush not seen since the 1960?s. Even though Saskatchewan has a huge potash resource, mining and processing constraints will limit the areas of economic development. Introduction In 1969 M. E. Holter prepared a report ?The Middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite of Saskatchewan?, published by the then Dept. of Mineral Resources. Holter?s report has remained the bible of geologists working in potash ever since. It is astounding that a report written before there was really much potash mining history in the province, is as valid today as when it was first published. This paper re-iterates much of Holter?s report and adds a little mining experience to essentially confirm the importance of his work.
