Difficulties and costs of transport markedly affect Canadian mineral producers because of distance from markets, weather conditions and rugged terrain. The chemical and physical nature of sulphide concentrates presents additional difficulties in handling and transport, resulting in higher costs which are ultimately borne by the mineowner. Troublesome properties include the thixo-tropic character of wet concentrates, freezing, susceptibility to autogenous heating, and fine particle size causing spillage and dusting losses. Canadian mineowners and shippers must contend with these problems and with stringent regulations governing the maritime shipping of concentrates. A "systems approach," in which complementary techniques in materials preparation, handling and transport are integrated, could reduce freight costs and losses for those selling concentrates, facilitate operations for those carrying and handling them and, in some cases, improve metallurgical processes in smelters receiving them.

THE geology of the Copper Mountain mine has been ably described by Dr. Victor Dolmage in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey. Reference is invited to that paper for a more extended description of the geology of the ore deposits than will be given here. The important orebodies of the mine occur in fragmencal volcanic rocks, parallel with and adjacent to the gabbro of the Copper Mountain stock. In the mine area, the contact strikes N.45°W. and dips either vertical or steeply co the southwest. For a distance of 500 feet or more from the contact, the fragmental rocks have been intensely metamorphosed both dynamically and hydrothermally. The dynamic effects are reflected in the foliation and fracturing parallel with the contact, which occurs throughout the mine, and the volcanic rocks within this foliated zone are, in places, highly schistose. Superimposed upon thi.s structure is a system of fine, straight, parallel frac-tures that strike nearly normal to the foliation (and contact) and dip between 65° and 75° to the north; it is with this last-described fracture system that the ore minerals are structurally associated. The fractures are mineralized with bornite and, to a considerably less extent, with chalcopyrite and some pyrite. A notable characteristic is the extreme fineness of the fractures; even in high-grade ore they are rarely larger than pencil lines. The tenor of the ore, therefore, varies directly with the fracture spacing. Replacemcnr of the host-rock between two or more fractures, varying in degree from finely disseminated sulphides to masses of nearly solid bornite up to 18 inches wide and 2 to 3 feet long, is not uncommon in the higher-grade portions of the orebodies. Two structural types of orebody are recognized in local nomenclature: the 'contact' orebodies, so-called because they occur along the contact; and 'outlying' orebodics, which are enclosed in the volcanics. The former arc tabular or lenticular bodies elongated along the strike and dip of the contact. The 'outlying' orebodies are coniform, chimney-like masses roughly elliptical in plan; with depth, their roots plunge at steep angles toward the contact. All of the orebodies are cut by a number of light-coloured granophyre and felsite porphyry dykes. These dykes-the so-called 'mine' dykes -enter the mine area from the north, curve gently southeasterly across the orebodies, and then cross the contact into the gabbro at the south end of the mine. All the dykes dip vertical to steeply east.

In order to determine the recovery functions in an oil sand circuit it is necessary to have more than a minimal determination the mass flows in the network. This over-determination is essential in order to allow for measurements within the flow matrix "to flex" according to an error function. It is then possible to identify the flows and composition at all points with maximum likelihood. These so-called full mappings are not easily obtained. However, in order to obtain an unequivocal determination of all the unit operations recoveries such a balance is needed. When databases are constructed exclusively with coherently balanced sets of data it is possible to obtain a maximally accurate process model by maximizing the probability of correctly identifying the process causality. Indeed, it is doubtful in cases of normal complexity that any sense can be made of data that is not so balanced. Coherent mass energy balancing is a tool developed by mineral processing scientists and engineers. Its rigorous application to oil sands is the subject of this paper. The additional element associated with hydrocarbon requires special considerations. It is shown that at least one currently available mineral processing tool will solve the full-mapping problem for an oil sand operation. Experimental design constraints are discussed in this paper relating to the development of databases for the development of effective process models.

"A comparative study of sulphide textures has been carried out on samples from four Archean copper-zinc massive base metal sulphide deposits: Kidd Creek, Ontario; Lake Dufault -Norbec, Quebec; Hood River-41, N. W. T.; and Geco, Ontario. These deposits have undergone metamorphic recrystallization under a range of conditions, and results of this study indicate that certain sulphide textures may be used as qualitative indicators of metamorphic grade, whereas other cannot.The sulphide textures of most value in this regard are sulphide grain sizes, which increase with increasing metamorphic grade, and the presence or absence of sedimentary/diagenetic textures, which are destroyed at the lower amphibolite facies of metamorphism. Chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite intergrowths in sphalerite increase in size, in degree of coalescence and in the ratio of unmixed pyrrhotite to chalcopyrite inclusions with increasing metamorphic rank. With increased metamorphic grade, the pyrrhotite intergrowths change from rounded inclusions on grain boundaries to rod-like shapes along sphalerite twin planes. There is also a general increase in the relative proportion of pyrrhotite in the deposits. Textures that appear to have little value as indicators of metamorphic grade are sulphide deformation textures, and triple junction point angles and their standard deviations, which show little variation from the lower greenschist to the upper amphibolite facies of metamorphism. The presence or absence of myrmekite-like magnetite also has little value in determining the relative metamorphic history of these deposits, as it is a product of local contact metamorphism."

"The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) Near Detector Hall at Fermilab and the Lafarge – Conco Mine are located approximately 100 meters underground in the Galena-Platteville dolomite just below its contact with the overlying Maquoketa shale in Northeastern Illinois, USA. A new cavern was excavated adjacent to the MINOS Near Detector Hall at Fermilab to house the near detector for the Off-axis Neutrino Appearance Experiment (NOvA) program. During this excavation approximately 1150 cubic meters of shale rock were removed. Tiltmeter arrays consisting of a series of hydrostatic leveling sensors (HLS), which are spaced regularly over a total distance of 50-to-100 meters, were used to monitor subsurface deformations. The tiltmeter response in the MINOS Near Detector Hall due to the NOvA cavern excavation is approximately thirteen times the estimated response based on using laboratorydetermined properties. The discrepancy between modeled and measured tilt is likely due to differences in Young’s Modulus in the rock mass versus in a small laboratory sample. Amplitudes of measured solid earth tides differ from the amplitudes of theoretical solid earth tides by up to 40 percent for both arrays. This is likely due to a local heterogeneity or discontinuity.INTRODUCTIONLong baseline tiltmeters have been used to record small earth movements since the early 1900s. One of the first studies using long baseline tiltmeters to measure earth tides was published by Michelson (1914). He used a leveled 152-meter long, 0.15-meter diameter tube half-filled with water connecting two concrete-lined pits. The pipe was trenched 1.75 meters underground in Williams Bay, Wisconsin in a sandy-clay soil. Initially only an east-west line was used, though a north-south line was added after it was seen that viable results were obtained. Measurements were made by hand either hourly or once every two hours depending on the time of day. When compared to 0.7 times the calculated earth tides, the tiltmeter signal matched almost exactly. This excellent result began the use of long baseline tiltmeters to measure small earth movements."

The EarthProbe DCIP system deploys tightly spaced electrodes connected to a centralized data acquisition system that enables arbitrary selection of current and potential electrodes through relays. Rapid data collection (approximately 1000 readings per hour) and advanced signal processing allow for efficient use of conventional and novel arrays and the removal of natural and cultural noise. What is unique about the system is its electrode and borehole cable design, which allows seamless integration of borehole and surface measurements. EarthProbe operates in four configurations - surface, borehole, borehole-to-borehole, and surface-to-borehole (a variant of the borehole-to-borehole configuration).

FOR THE PAST seven years Mr. W. Simpson, Chief Mechanical Inspector for the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, has carried out exhaustive field trials of non-destructive inspection equipment in the coal mines of that Province. This work has demonstrated the usefulness of a number of types of non-destructive inspection when used for periodic inspection of hoisting and haulage equipment in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. As a result, the Dominion Coal Company has instituted a programme of regular preventive maintenance inspection ?by a special staff of qualified and trained men. The purpose of this present paper is to describe how non-destructive testing techniques are used on ropes, axles, couplings, and other hoisting and haulage equipment, how these methods are being used in other industries, and the expected benefits from intelligent and properly organized use of these techniques in the coal mining industry.

"Canada now supplies 23 per cent of the world demand for potash. Although potash is produced by many countries, Russia and Canada have the greatest reserves and capability to supply the future substantial demand over the next decade. It is estimated that demand will grow from 38,000,000 mt KCl in 1975-76 to 60,000,000 mt KCl in 1985-86. Current firm expansion plans and development underway in the world will move Russia to the forefront in supplying this demand growth. Russia will move from supplying 40 per cent of world demand in 1975 to supplying as much as 52 per cent in 1981. Canadian deposits suffer from natural disadvantages, such as high costs and risks of mine development and operation, and high-cost transportation to international markets, but experience has shown that these natural barriers can be surmounted to effectively compete in these international markets. However, Canadian potash is losing out in the race to supply the growth in the world potash demand over the next ten years because of artificial barriers raised through the unhealthy environment created by the current battle between different levels of government and the industry over resource taxation and legislation."

"The commercial potential of a silica-kaolin deposit that occurs on the banks of and close to the Missinaibi River in the District of Cochrane, Ontario, is under evaluation by Algocen Mines Limited. The geological features of the deposit, as well as its probable origin, are described. Mineralogical analysis of the deposit samples indicates that the principal minerals are quartz and kaolinite clay; it is estimated that about 20 per cent of the deposit is kaolin clay. The impurity minerals present are: a slightly magnetic Fe-Ti oxide mineral, goethite, muscovite mica, tour-maline, staurolite, anatase and zircon. Laboratory research studies are in progress to develop and evaluate suit-able methods for the separation of silica sand from kaolin. Results to date indicate that good-quality silica sand with an Fe,03 content in the range of 0.012 to 0.025 per cent can be produced. It appears that the clay portion can also be beneficiated to yield products meeting commercial requirements. It has been possible to beneficiate a portion of theetlay to obtain the particle size distribution now specified by industry. However, research is continuing to develop suitable separation and beneficiation methods which can produce kaolin clay meeting all the commercial requirements."

The increasing use of electronic equipment by the Canadian Forces has increased the importance of electric power. A power source that is packed with energy and yet light, small and durable is the common request of military users. However, this needs to be achieved while also addressing the requirements of safety, reliability and low temperature performance. The potential use of fuel cells in a military environment has become a possibility in several areas in the 21st century. Some examples of power source requirements and the materials related R&D required to give better, higher energy power systems in the future will be discussed.

DURING the past 5 years a large amount of money and effort has been expended in exploration of iron-formations and in testing their suitability for beneficiation. Beds of ferruginous material are numerous and widely distributed in the Precambrian rocks of Canada and practically all of the known iron ranges or belts have been examined to a limited degree at least in an effort to evaluate their potential as sources of iron ore. A number of favorable beds have been selected for mining on completion of surface sampling, diamond drilling, extensive metallurgical testing and economic studies, and many other ranges are being studied. There are still a great many iron-formations that have not been evaluated by modern concentration methods and their regional extent is not fully known. The iron-formations are easily located by airborne or ground magnetic surveys but the main task in finding a mineable ore-body of this type amounts to locating a bed sufficiently large for mining which consists of material that can be concentrated economically by modern beneficiating methods. "The region discussed comprises approximately eight million acres spreading across the Arctic Circle in Yukon and North West Territories.Encouraged by four years of surface geological and geophysical work, which strongly suggested that suit-able conditions existed for the entrapment of oil and gas, a decision was reached to drill. In due course two holes were drilled; Eagle Plains No. 1 drilled to 9589 in 1957-8 and Western Minerals Chance No. 1 spudded in 1959 is being deepened this year.Thick sections of sedimentary rocks occur on both sides of the Richardson Mountains, however, most of our activities have been concentrated to date on the west side in the Eagle Plains basin. Here are found stratigraphic units ranging from Precambrian to Tertiary age. The drilling of the two exploratory wells proved the presence of these strata at depth and have confirmed the presence of promising structures. A geological cross-section across Eagle Plains presents an interpretation of these conditions.Physical and engineering aspects of exploration in the northern Yukon and North West Territories are de-pendent largely upon seasons and transportation. Reconnaissance gravity and surface geologic mapping by air presents no serious problems. However, seismic operations on the ground are greatly affected by the season, presence of permafrost and mobility of equipment.The actual drilling of the hole may well be the simple part of a wildcat undertaking once equipment and supplies are on location. Over-all planning, assembling supplies, transporting equipment and personnel seems to be the real job. Serious consideration must be given to per-ma-frost effect in the drilling pro-gram and on surface installations as well.Programming for -the various exploration activities should be under-taken well in advance of the actual doing. Considerable extra costs may be the results of crash programs. Costs are high, and the rewards uncertain. Economic evaluation is based •on the long term outlook."

Fans delivered to the Russian Federation, and eventually to countries of the former U.S.S.R., for mine ventilation must meet the legislative requirements of local jurisdictions. This paper presents a discussion of these legislative requirements and presents examples of fan equipment designed to meet the requirements. The legislative obligations discussed include four (4) separate requirements, including: ?Technical design requirements ? The Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology is responsible to issue a GOST R certification declaring conformance to the requirements ?Operational requirements ? A ?License for Application? must be obtained prior to operation ?Explosion risk requirements ? If the area of operation includes potential for explosion a special certificate must be obtained ?Technical condition requirements ? Market segments within the mining industry require special conditions that must be satisfied Examples of fans designed specifically for use in the Russian Federation are also discussed and examples provided. Designs for fan volume flow control will be highlighted.

The AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) industry is an information intensive industry and all related processes employed during different phases of a project, including planning, designing, building, manufacturing, occupying, and maintenance, involve vast amounts of data that is used for a wide variety of purposes. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a powerful shared knowledge resource which stores this data to support decision making about a facility through all these different phases in its life cycle. Nowadays, BIM is mostly used in the design and construction phases while it can also be highly beneficial beyond those stages. For example, in the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) phase, BIM could be used for automated facilities management or robotic inspection to provide semantic knowledge for navigation. For any implementation not related to the original intent of the BIM (design), organizations need to be able to represent their project data in a common interpretable form, which provides the possibility of an accurate exchange of data among different software products and platforms, known as interoperability. This study has investigated the current state of interoperability between software products used as Building Information Modeling tools. The main focus has been on a popularly used format for BIM models, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), since it has been specifically developed to enable standardized data exchange. The research methodology involved a comprehensive literature review and the gathering of all fragmented prior research related to the field in order to develop a consistent understanding of the current state of knowledge. This was accompanied with a detailed case study that evaluated and compared two dominant pieces of BIM software, Revit and Bentley, and examined their interoperability strengths and weaknesses while using the IFC format.

Geophysical studies have extended seaward in recent years, and the important discoveries which have been made have led to a better understanding of geological processes. A present source of certain minerals, the sea will eventually serve as an important source of desalinated water. The continental helves, in particular, represent a potential mineral resource. The expansion of Canadian oceanographic effort that is now underway will eventually lead to the exploitation of the wealth beneath the sea. THE subject of this symposium, which emphasizes the word "geophysics," the specialties of the speakers who are contributing and the nature of the audience at first made me believe that I, a a physical oceanographer, would be out of place. However, I shall undertake to classify myself as a geophysicist, and shall arrange my remarks on my specialty o that they might be of interest to those of you who are predominantly geologists, metallurgists or mining engineers.

ABSTRACTThis paper describes the main testing procedures that should be carried out to evaluate the capacity and capability of the service brakes on the large-size diesel-electric trucks now in common use at open-pit mining operations. Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. "There are more than 300 occurrences of fluorite in Canada. Deposits of economic significance, however, are confined to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in eastern Canada, Ontario in central Canada, and British Columbia in western Canada. Fluorite has been mined and processed intermittently in Ontario and Newfoundland until November 1990, when Canada's only producer Minworth Ltd., a U.K. based company, with a mine and concentrator near St. Lawrence on the Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, closed its operation.CANMET has processed ore samples from each of the major mineralized areas, and thirty-one studies were conducted between 1920and 1970. A summary of the important aspects of the various testwork studies is presented. The production of acid-grade fluorite was possible by flotation, and ceramic-grade, by flotation and gravity concentration methods. Gravity concentration methods included heavy media separation, jigging and tabling. Flotation was by direct and reverse techniques; associated minerals, quartz, calcite, barite, etc. were depressed by a variety of depressants. The function of the major depressants is discussed briefly. The various uses offluorite which include hydrofluoric acid, chlorofluorocarbons, aluminum production, petroleum alkylation, fluxing and ceramic applications etc. are discussed briefly."

"The Cordilleran tin belt extends from the Seward Peninsula in westernmost Alaska to Mexico. Throughout the Canadian section, tin occurrences are mainly confined to a belt along the northeastern fringe of the Western Cordilleran sub-region; the boundary of this sub-region with the Eastern Cordilleran sub-region is most simply defined as the practical eastern limit of granitic and metamorphic rocks. The stratified rocks underlying this restricted belt are mainly late Precambrian and early Paleozoic miogeosynclinal sedimentary rocks, which are more or less metamorphosed but otherwise are generally equivalent to the less severely deformed rocks underlying the Eastern Cordilleran sub-region. They contrast with Late Paleozoic - Mesozoic eugeosynclinal volcanic-sedimentary assemblages farther west, but the granitic intrusions throughout are mainly of Late Mesozoic age. Thus, narrowly defined, the tin belt largely coincides with a lead-zinc-silver metallogenic province, whereas copper deposits characterize the eugeosynclinal regions to the west. In addition to the tin occurrences, which include the Sullivan lead-zinc-silver mine, Canada's only significant producer, the belt contains all the beryllium, most of the tungsten and many Iithophile-type molybdenum occurrences. Several types of occurrences of each metal are represented. Lithium occurrences in the Canadian Cordillera are notably rare, and these few are insignificant."
