Three-dimensional models are in increasing demand for design, maintenance, operations and construction project management. Point-clouds are the main output of automatic data collection using laser-scanners and photogrammetric technologies. Pipe-works may comprise 50% of the value of important construction projects such as industrial and research facilities. We have developed a practical and cost-effective approach, based on the Hough-transform and judicious use of domain constraints, to find, recognize and reconstruct/model 3D pipes within point-clouds fully automatically. The developed approach allows pipe growing within a 3D point-cloud. It samples the point-cloud to sequential orthogonal slices, detects pipe?s cross-sections within sampled slices and grows the pipe along the cross sections centerlines. It is validated using laser-scanner data from construction of the Engineering-VI building on the University of Waterloo (UW) campus. The system works on a typical laptop. Recognition and localization results are within a few millimeters. The presented approach opens the gate to broad applications of pipe-network modeling.

Petrographic, chemical and isotopic compo itions of auriferous and non-auriferous quartz vei ns from the Sta r Lake and Flin Flin-Amisk Lake areas of northern Saskatchewan indicate diver e origins fo r the fluids associated with gold mineralization. In the Sta r Lake area, the metavolcanic , Star Lake pl uton, and heared mafic dikes have retained their original igneous 81 80 values. The 81 80 value of quartz from mi neralized veins vary by I per mi! and range from+I0 to+IJ. The only quartz ample having a 81 80 value outside th is range came from a vein not associated wi th a dike or gold mineralization . Quartz from the Star Lake pluton has identical 8180 value to the qua rtz from mi neralized vei ns which suggests that the vei ns and the pluton are related to imilar proces es. The diffe rence in 81 80 values between mi neralized and barren vein may erve a a potential exploration tool in this area. Because o34S val ues of a limi ted number of amples of pyrite from gold-bearing quartz vei ns at Star Lake correlate directly with gold content. the gold may have been syngenetic with the su lphur and the 834 value may be useful for exploration . 8180 values of co-existing quartz, calcite, and amphibole in the veins from Star Lake indicate that isotopic disequilibrium among the minerals is common, but the val ues also record a high temperature of formation (ea . 500°C) involvi ng a component of magmatic fl uid. TheoD value of hydrou mineral from Star Lake retain their original igneous values but whole rock values are generally much lower, an effect attributed to interaction of the minerals with a late meteoric water. In the Fl in Flin-Amisk Lake area, auriferou and barren quartz veins formed from a mixture of hydrothermal and metamorph ic flu id at lower temperatures (ea . 350°C) than those at Sta r Lake. Becau e there i no apparent correlation between 8180 values of the quartz with gold content or relative age of the vein , nor between the 834S val ues of pyrite and gold content, table isotopes appear limited as an exploration tool in the Fl in FlonAmisk Lake areas.

"The co-pyrolysis of synthetic polymer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and agricultural wastes (naturally occurring polymer-macadamia nut shell) was investigated in the temperature range 473K to 1273K using a horizontal furnace with an aim to understand their thermal degradation under isothermal conditions. In-depth characterization of pyrolysis residues was carried out using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for carbon structure, and through determination of the concentration of unpaired electrons using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). In previous studies, it has been found that PET thermally decomposes ~ 650K-700K, releasing (~80 wt % of initial weight) gaseous products due to random chain scission. In the case of macadamia nut shell, three types of byproduct can be obtained from pyrolysis: char, tar and gaseous products. In the co-pyrolysis of macadamia nut shell with PET in 50-50 wt% ratio, total product weight ratio could be modified with the addition of PET acting as a hydrogen source. This is because a recombination of thermal cracking products of cellulose could be suppressed by hydrogen from PET, which will later lead to an enhancement of tar formation. In addition, pyrolysis around 673K is sufficient for bond cleavage to occur in cellulose and lignin leading to the formation of negatively charged activated carbon with high surface area, providing bonding sites for volatiles evolving from PET. Therefore the co-pyrolysis may be able to enhance the product yield (tar/char/solid carbon residue) along with a reduction in the release of gaseous products. During the co-pyrolysis, temperature was found to have a significant influence on the kinetics of thermal degradation and solid residual by-products after co-pyrolysis.INTRODUCTIONPlastics are being used worldwide in a wide range of applications in the modern society; their usage has resulted in increasingly a massive waste problem. The production of most synthetic plastics requires hydrocarbons that are produced from petrochemicals derived from fossil oil and natural gas, a non-renewable source (Speight 2011). Currently, plastic manufacture utilizes ~4% of world oil and gas production, and it is expected to drive further increases in petroleum demand by 1-2% due to their large volume of manufacture (Hopewell, Dvorak et al. 2009). Landfilling and incineration of plastic waste are the two main routes to plastic waste management (Encinar and González 2008). In Australia, only 10% of waste plastics were recycled in 2006 (White and Hyde 2011). This means that large amount of fossil fuels from plastics has either been simply burned for energy recovery or buried in the ground. There is an urgent need for developing alternative avenues for recycling waste plastics. Our group at UNSW has carried out extensive research on the recycling of waste polymers as carbon resource in steelmaking including slag foaming and carbon dissolution from waste plastics into liquid steel at 1600°C; the effect of basic plastic characteristics such as chemical composition, structure, bonding network etc. was examined (Sahajwalla, Rahman et al. 2009)"

"In order to investigate anisotropic characteristics of Boryeong shale in Korea, which clearly shows transverse isotropy, a series of experimental tests were carried out. Using Brazilian test, five elastic constants and tensile strength of the shale were evaluated. Elastic constants were determined by iterative procedure and in order to perform this procedure, constitutive model was modified to fit the experimental condition. The anisotropic ratios of elastic constants were evaluated and the applicability of the methodology was assessed. Apparent Brazilian tensile strength profile was investigated and the ratio of the maximum to minimum tensile strength was estimated. Results showed that the tested rock type had low to moderate anisotropic characteristics.INTRODUCTIONMechanical, thermal and hydraulic characteristics of many rocks vary according to direction, which is known as inherent anisotropy, and it is originated from stratified and/or foliated structure of intact rock and discontinuity of rock mass. Anisotropy is one of the long standing issues of rock mechanics field and it has to be taken into account in several engineering fields such as civil, mining and petroleum engineering. An anisotropic medium has 21 independent elastic constants without any assumption of symmetry. If a material has any symmetry, the number of elastic constants required to define its behavior reduces and eventually two constants are necessary if it has complete symmetry, which is known as isotropy. An anisotropic medium that has remarkable planar structure due to its stratification and foliation such as bedding is often called as a transversely isotropic medium. Transversely isotropic model is frequently adopted in many applications especially for sedimentary rock formation and five elastic constants are required to establish the constitutive model."

"The effect of thermomechanical processing (TMP) including cold working by tension or rolling before aging on mechanical properties and a dispersion of secondary phase particles of an AA2519 alloy (Al–5.64Cu–0.33Mn–0.23Mg–0.15Zr–0.11Ti–0.09V–0.08Fe–0.01Si (wt. %)) was examined. It was shown that the use of tension to impart pre-strain =10% in the alloy provides the best combination of properties in peak aging condition of the material. The AA2519T87 alloy processed by tension exhibits the yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of 425.4±2.4, 475±2.4, 12.1±0.4, respectively. The one pass rolling leads to -5% decreases in yield stress and –20% decreases in ductility. Dislocations serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?'-phase precipitation. The positive effect of tension is attributed to the formation of more homogeneous dislocation structure, uniform distribution of ?'-phase particles with higher aspect ratio. Precipitation of the O–phase plates on {111}a habit plane was detected. In addition it was shown that the low angle boundaries are heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?' and O particles.INTRODUCTION Precipitation-hardened alloys are a commercially important group of the materials because their mechanical properties can be modified by treating and changing the microstructure. Age-hardenable aluminum alloys belonging to the Al–Cu–Mg system are widely used due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance attributed to the highly efficient strengthening by the ?'-phase (Palmer, StJohn, Nie, & Qian, 2017). An AA2519 alloy exhibiting superior mechanical properties among high-strength Al–Cu alloys (2XXX-serie) due to minor Mg additives. It is known that, in alloys with high Cu/Mg ratio (=5.6) the classic precipitation sequence (Palmer et al., 2017; Wang & Starink, 2005; Wang et al., 2010) of supersaturated solid solution (SSSS) decomposition occurs: SSSS ? "Following a brief explanation of the land arrangements under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, this paper will examine both a mineral exploration agreement and a mining development agreement negotiated between two large mining companies and two different Alaska Native institutions. One of the institutions is a village corporation involved with an exploration agreement and the other is one of the Alaska Native regional corporations, which is party to a mining and development agreement with Cominco Alaska for the development of the Red Dog lead and zinc mine.Special attention will be given to the factors to be considered when dealing with small aboriginal owners with few resources in the context of an exploration agreement, including development issues which must be considered early in the process. The paper will also discuss the unique royalty and taxation structures developed for the Red Dog Mine Agreement as well as environmental issues. The paper will also consider the ways in which the cultural and differing economic interests of an aboriginal owner and a large mining company have been accommodated in the both the exploration and development agreements"

According to the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), 140 Billion CAD is required to maintain, rehabilitate, and replace subway infrastructure between 2010 and 2014. The current practice adopted by transit authorities for prioritizing subway stations for rehabilitation is based on the station structural needs. While this classification is reflective of station condition, other factors, such as station size, location and passenger capacity, play an important role. The criticality of a station is an index that represents the functional importance of a station depending upon a set of identified factors. The system criticality is based on several attributes, such as station location, size, and nature of use. This paper presents a novel method of clustering subway stations for rehabilitation priority based on their criticality level. The different stations in a subway network are rated according to their relative importance against predefined attributes. The weights and scores of the attributes are computed with the help of experts and current subway network data. The analysis is done using the Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP) to accommodate the subjectivity of human judgment as being expressed in natural language which entails ?fuzziness? in real-life problems and account for the interdependency between the selected attributes. The output of the model is a criticality based clustering of subway stations. The proposed framework helps authorities prioritize stations for rehabilitation and highlight stations with more criticality for a more robust asset analysis.

"The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC's confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.

The microscope is now used extensively not only in the examination of solid ore but also in the determination of fragmental mill products. It has therefore become a matter of paramount importance to be able to mount and polish fragmental as well as solid specimens in the easiest and most efficient way, so that the minerals present may be readily determined. In the case of the solid ore the ordinary mount of plasticine set on a glass or metal slide serves for most practical purposes. An improvement on this is furnished by the small brass container inside of which the specimen is mounted in a cementing medium of sealing wax. The latter is the method in use at Harvard University. It has the advantage of uniform height, thus obviating the necessity of a slide of any sort. It is also easily catalogued as the brass holder may be stamped with a convenient series of letters and numbers that will serve as a label. Other advantages of this type are the ease with which any particular part of the section may be re-located, the excellent storing facilities afforded by mounts of uniform size, and the possibility of polishing ten or a dozen sections at the same time by means of a holder which is placed over the polishing wheel, is geared with it, but revolves the opposite way.

"The history of the development and application of controlled recirculation systems in U.K. collieries is traced and the theory behind such systems briefly examined. Specific applications for dealing with dust and dust/heat problems in headings, for which practical experience is currently available, are described. Consideration is given to the special features which these systems introduce in the underground situation and to the essential safeguards which are required for their safe use.IntroductionRecirculation of air is a commonly used technique in genera l ventilation and air conditioning practice, but has always been regarded with some suspicion for mining applications. This is perfectly understandable in view o f the hazardous conditions which can occur with dangerous forms of recirculation in mines. However, certain controlled recirculation techniques can offer advantages, particularly in the field s of dust and climate control in headings, provided that they are designed, Installed an d managed with full comprehension o f all aspects of the system and always bearing in mind that from the point of view of serious firedamp ignition risk, headings are potentially the most hazardous places in coal mines.BackgroundProbably the first recorded use of deliberate recirculation in British collieries was reported by Lawton in 1933. This researcher described trials, undertaken under the auspices of a national committee on ""The Control of Atmospheric Conditions in Hot and Deep Mines"", involving attempts to increase the velocity, and thereby the cooling power on hot faces, by means of simple recirculation systems using fans and ducts delivering recirculated air in the opposite direction to the normal face airflow. No significant cooling advantage was obtained and there is no subsequent record of this work being continued. During the discussion on this paper, there was considerable disbelief that fire damp percentages had not increased significantly when air was recirculated, but apparently no attempt was made to establish why this should be. It is of interest to note that J. Ivon Graham, one of the contributors, recommended that recirculation should be tried in stone headings for the control o f dust, as he believed that ""there may be scope for recirculation and filtration of the air under certain circumstances in such headings"". This idea was not developed for another forty years."

Le procédé comprend les opérations suivantes: 1) la concentration magnétique du minerai (30% Fe, 9% TiO2 et 0,65% V2O5) pour produire un concentré (65% Fe, 7% TiO2 et 1,6% V2O5); 2) le smeltage du concentré aggloméré dans un four à arc, sans fondant, pour produire une fonte et une scorie (30% FeO, 40% TiO2 et 8,0% V2O5) qui contient plus de 95% du vanadium et du titane présents dans le concentré; 3) le grillage alcalin (37% Na2CO3) de la scorie suivi d'une lixiviation à l'eau et de la précipitation de l'hexavanadate d'ammonium à partir du filtrat; 4) la lixiviation du résidu par l'acide sulfurique pur ou usagé pour produire un rutile synthétique. Un estimé préliminaire de la valeur économique du projet laisse croire à sa rentabilité à la condition que l'investissement pour le smeltage soit inférieur à environ 400$/tonne de fer.IntroductionLes gisements de magnétites titanifères sont nombreux dans le monde. Ils consistent en une magnétite étroitement liée a l'ilménite, La teneur trop élevée en TiO2 empêche l'exploitation de ces gisements pour la production de fer. Cependant, dans certains cas, la magnétite a une teneur intéressante en vanadium qui peut rendre l'exploitation de ces gisements rentable. Aujourd'hui, les magnétites titanifères constituent la plus importante source de production de vanadium. On estime qu'environ 70% du vanadium produit provient de ces sources."

Pillars are used in various forms in underground mining. For several decades pillar design has been an issue in both soft and hard rock underground mining. The major use of pillars is in room-and-pillar type mining. Pillars are critical structures in the production levels of block cave mines. With most mines leaning towards the use of block caving for ore extraction today, pillar design has become even more important. Empirical pillar design is popular. The use of numerical modeling is becoming more common in the design of underground mine pillars. A critical review of both the empirical and numerical modeling approaches to the design of underground mine pillars reveal some fundamental flaws. In general, pillar design approaches often assume the pillars are vertical, and are subjected to pure compression. Pillar failure criteria are then based on this assumption. Most papers on numerical modeling for pillar stability assessment use vertical pillars. This paper shows that where pillars are not subjected to pure compression the empirical pillar design approaches are inadequate, and that when using numerical models for the assessment of pillar performance, more care is needed in the determination of the average pillar stresses. The practice of relating field scale pillar strength to laboratory scale intact rock strength determined from conventional laboratory compression tests in empirical design equations is misleading when pillars are inclined or subjected to compressive and shear stresses. New data is added to the hard rock empirical pillar stability chart, and it is shown that it is misleading to conclude that failure of pillars with width to height ratios greater than 2.3 should not be anticipated. New empirical pillar design charts are presented for pillars at various degrees of inclination for different ko-ratios.

Introduction Within the last quarter of a century the Lake St. John-Saguenay valley has been converted from a quiet agricultural district to one of the important industrial centres in the Dominion. First there was the expansion -of the pulp and paper industry, and then, starting a little over ten years, ago, the development, in large .blocks, of the enormous hydro-electric power resources of the Saguenay river. Coincident with this power development, the world aluminum industry was rapidly expanding and looking for a new source of cheap power. This was found in the Saguenay valley-and so, in 1925, Arvida was established by the Aluminum Company of Canada as a location for one of the largest aluminum plants in the world. Arvida, an incorporated city comprising an area of some ten square miles, is ideally located on a more or less level plateau about 350 feet above the Saguenay river. Seldom has industry stepped boldly forth and carved out of Nature a community with full city status. The process usually goes through the steps of camp, village, town, and city, involving improper planning or lack of planning; all of which has been avoided at Arvida by starting out in the right way. While this community has only a population of approximately 2,000 at the present time, it is carefully planned for a population many times this figure. Streets, city parks, business and residential sections, have been definitely planned, and, with a City government, proper ordinances were passed at the beginning to ensure the building and maintenance of a model industrial community. As the crow flies, Arvida is about 35 miles due east of lake St. John, and 0 miles west of the St. Lawrence river at Tadoussac. From a shipping standpoint, it is well served by the Canadian National railways, with direct lines to Quebec and Montreal, and by ocean shipping facilities at Port Alfred, which is about 15 miles to the east on the Saguenay river and is served by the Roberval & Saguenay railway. The latter has interchange connections with the Canadian National at Arivda, and also operates a branch line into the city of Chicoutimi.

Aur Resources is Canada's leading copper mining company with producing mines and development projects in North, Central and South America. Copper production from Louvicourt Mine in Quebec, Quebrada Blanca and Andacollo Mines in Chile was a record 245 million pounds in 2001. Located 600 km North of Montreal, Louvicourt Mine is a joint venture between Aur Resources (30%), Novicourt Inc (45%) and Teck-Cominco (25%). Aur Resources is the mine operator with 280 employees working to produce a copper and zinc concentrate. In operation since 1994, the mine has produced a total of 12,606,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 3.6% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 26 gr./m.t. Ag and 0.9 gr./m.t. Au. This highly mechanized mine reached full production in August 1995 at 4,000 tpd. From 1996 to 2001, the average mine production rate was more than 4,300 tpd. The Louvicourt Mine continued its record of solid performance in 2002 and is expected to continue to do so for the balance of its 2.5 years mine life.

"The Mining Laboratories of CANMET are the principal federal government vehicle for the delivery of mining research in Canada. With research being performed at five locations, which are mostly mining communities, the laboratories are in close proximity to the industry which they serve.The Mining Laboratories have three principal roles: (1) to support government in its development of policy; (2) to aid industry in the enhancement of productivity; and (3) to improve the health and safety of Canadians,both in the workplace in mines and around abandoned mine sites.From 1994 to 1996, CANMET’s mining research was re-focused into four programs. These are: (1) Underground Mine Environments; (2) Mine Mechanization and Automation; (3) Ground Control, and; (4) Coal Mining Health and Safety.In this paper, the authors outline the work of the Mining Laboratories and also identify the areas considered to be primary targets for future mining health and safety research in Canada."

THE Box mine, situated in Saskatchewan on the north shore of lake Athabasca, is unique in two respects. It is the first and, so far, the only gold mine in Saskatchewan, and it is the only gold mine in Canada to employ a large-scale forced caving system as the main mining method. Discovered in 1934 by Tom Box, an Edmonton prospector, its subsequent history, while breaking no records for speed, has been one of steady and more or less normal development. Camp and plant are situated close to the shore of Beaverlodge bay, sorne 50 miles east of the Saskatchewan-Alberta boundary and 35 miles south of the north boundary of the Province. The railhead at Waterways, Alberta, is about 220 miles to the southwest. Prince Albert lies some 450 miles to the south. The surrounding country presents a rather rugged variation of the usual Precambrian topography, with hills rising five to six hundred feet above lake Athabasca. The numerous lakes and islands, together with the wide expanse of lake Athabasca, compose an attractive scene, at least in the not over-long 'open water' season. The winters are long but not extremely cold, judged by prairie standards. The small lakes break-up around May 20th and the 'freeze-up' stops navigation early in October. Though apparently remote, the Box mine is fortunate in having reason-ably cheap transportation from Edmonton. The 300-mile railway from Edmonton to Waterways is the most expensive section, the rate for 1st class freight being $1.70 per hundred pounds and for 5th class freight $0.77 per hundred. Freight from Waterways to the mine, approximately 140 miles down the Athabasca river and 90 miles along lake Athabasca, is delivered by barges and tugs for 50 cents per hundred pounds. All freight is delivered during the 'open water' shipping season, which lasts from about .Tune 7th to October 7th. In normal years, barges are loaded to 3 to 3 1/2feet draught up to September 1st. After that date, and earlier in dry years, shallow water at Waterways reduces the barge loads. Barges of 100 to 200 tons capacity handle all mining freight, including pieces up to 15 tons in weight, without undue difficulty.

Variations in structural continuity, dip, strike, width, mineralogy and speci?c gravity are common. Veins may be composite, with ore-grade mineralization restricted to a speci?c structural domain. Branches, intersections and braided zones are common features. Potentially high-grade zones are often localized within ore shoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade regions. Resources must be determined as closely as possible to reality and re?ect the distribution of the commodity in the rock. Estimation has three main requirements: (1) geological study to determine orebody nature;(2) estimation of tonnage and grade, and (3) the presentation of this information using a classi?cation that is clear, unambiguous and bankable. Estimation methods employed are either classical or geostatistical; however, classical methods are often used because of the dif?culties in applying geo-statistics. Grades generally show a strong positively skewed distribution testifying the presence of high-grade values. Problems exist in the applicability of cutting outlier values risking over- or under-estimation of grade. It is generally believed that where resource estimates are in error, poor geological control is usually the cause. Overestimation can lead to the closure of a mine through lost revenue and capital. An understated estimate can result in an opportunity missed for pro?t and/or greater economies of scale. De?nition of reserves involves the consideration of economic and engineering data, to decide which part of the resource is economically mineable. Geology plays a similarly important role at this stage in the assessment of likely mining method, dilution, recovery etc. Throughout resource/reserve estimation, it is crucial that the amount and quality of the data and the geologist’s experience are relevant. The impact of geological understanding on estimation is often undervalued or assumed to be of lesser importance than ?nding grades and tonnages.
