"Collecting property of two hydroxamic acid collectors have different type of nonpolar structure to hemimorphite has been comparatively studied via monomineral flotation test, and the reason causes different collecting performance has been discussed from the view of relationship between molecular structure and collecting property. The flotation tests results show that C5-9 hydroxamic acid has an unbranched linear alkyl nonpolar group shows better collecting property to hemimorphite than cyclohexyl hydroxamic acid which has a naphthenic nonpolar group. FTIR detecting results show that the adsorption type of collector adsorbed on hemimorphite surface is chemical adsorption. Calculation results of polar group’s geometric structure parameters, polar group’s electron density distribution, octanol-water partition coefficient (logP) and molecular frontier orbital energy show that the key factor caused different collecting property of two collectors to hemimorphite is the logP; unbranched linear alkyl nonpolar group is more conducive than naphthenic nonpolar group to make hemimorphite particle more hydrophobic.INTRODUCTIONZinc-bearing mineral recovered from lead-zinc ores is the main source that people can obtain zinc resource from nature. However, natural sulfide ores are currently getting depleted steadily for the primary zinc source. In order to satisfy the future demand of zinc resource, there is an obvious recognition that the recovery of zinc oxidized minerals from the ores is a crucial alternative (Hosseini & Forssberg, 2007; Navidi Kashani & Rashchi, 2008).But the fact that can’t be ignored is the flotation of zinc oxidized minerals is much more difficult than that of zinc sulfide minerals, which is mainly due to the flotation characteristics of these zinc oxidized minerals such as lower selectivity and higher reagent consumption, as well as complex and variety of lead-zinc ores. Presently, there have been many various beneficiation technologies used for recovering zinc oxidized minerals and dealing with ores for recovering metallic zinc such as flotation and hydrometallurgy (Abkhoshk, Jorjani, Al-Harahsheh, Rashchi, & Naazeri, 2014; Önal et al., 2005). But from an overall perspective, flotation is the most common method used for the beneficiation of zinc oxidized minerals, and there have been extensive investigations conducted on the flotation of zinc oxide ores (Ejtemaei, Gharabaghi, & Irannajad, 2014). Until now, the most well-known method used commercially for the flotation of zinc oxidized minerals is sulfidization with sodium sulfide and flotation with a cationic collector of amines containing from 8 to 18 carbon atoms. However, a major problem for this method is the large amount of fines and slime results in the increase of reagent consumption and promotes the phenomenon of slime-coating. For preclude this negative effect, the de-sliming and processing optimization is indispensible (Peres, Borges, & Galery, 1994; Salum, de Araujo, & Peres, 1992)."

Construction began in 1965, with the first production coming on September 1967.Details of Present Milling Practice (Plant 3)Plant 3 recovers bitumen from the oil sand using the Clark hot water process. The basic steps in the process are conditioning, primary recovery, secondary recovery and tailings oil recovery.Oil Sand Feed SystemThe oil sand feed from the mine is transferred to the feed bin in extraction by two conveyor systems. Oil sand analyzers on each conveyor system measure the amount of bitumen and fines in the ore. Cones at the bottom of the feed bin distribute the oil sand to five process lines. Feed flow from each cone is regulated by an apron feeder which transfers the oil sand to conveyors that discharge into the conditioning drums. Weightometers on each of these five conveyors measure the rate at which the oil sand is delivered into the drums. "Due diligence reviews are an essential part of mineral property acquisitions. One of the primary reasons to complete an environmental review prior to exploration property acquisition is to assess the potential environmental liability. It is critical to identify the potential reclamation costs or existing environmental liability associated with the exploration property. A review of the existing condition of the property and its history can allow prioritization of exploration targets and ease future expenditures for historic damages. IntroductionIn Canada and some other jurisdictions, the purchaser of a property is assumed to know, and is (in the absence of deceit or fraud) financially responsible for, what is purchased. A plea of ignorance, at least from the perspective of environmental liability, is not an acceptable excuse to avoid responsibility (Nelson, 1994). Therefore, if an exploration company (for the purposes of this paper, any organization conducting exploration work) purchases a property that has environmental contamination, the new owner is liable for the cost to reclaim the site to an acceptable level. The cost to reclaim the site is the environmental liability. The new owner is responsible for existing environmental liability of the property, even if the exploration company’s personnel were not aware of the problem. In simplest terms, buyers beware. Therefore, in order to protect the exploration company’s interests, the exploration manager should determine the characteristics of the property of interest prior to purchase or other involvement, and exercise due diligence.The term “due diligence” is often used in the mining industry. To ensure clarity, in this paper’s context, the author has chosen to use the following meaning: “… due diligence is used to describe a detailed data review, generally in connection with the purchase or sale of a mineral property, the approval of a large capital expenditure, or the borrowing of a large sum of money” (Smith, 1997).Directors of the exploration company are held liable for the decisions made, unless they have relied in good faith on,“…a written report of the auditor, or a report of a lawyer, accountant, engineer, appraiser, or other person whose profession lends credibility to a statement made by any such person” (OBCA, 1994)."

The Ontario Committee on Taxation is making a comprehensive study of taxation in the Province of Ontario, and in this connection has received representations concerning mining taxation from a number of interested parties. "Final Galloway (stage) designs for vertical drill and blast shaft sinking projects evolve from complex thought patterns which integrate operational processes, systems and methods of communication, power supply, drilling, blasting, ventilating, mucking, supporting, surveying, dewatering, sealing, concrete lining and shaft furnishing. Attention to ergonomic design detail at the shaftsman / structure interface is at the heart of safe and successful multi-deck working platforms. For economy the end product must have a low mass to reduce suspension rope end loads to be able to use smaller suspension hoists and have lighter headframe structures, be robust to withstand concussion damage, be easily constructible on site, be maintainable in the shaft barrel, and comply with safety and legislated standards. This paper’s ambition is to describe a systematic design framework and sequenced thought process that delivers a product that is engineered with excellence, illustrated by making use of two designs that evolved during recent Galloway projects, one destined for a large diameter man/material shaft, the other for a ventilation shaft. The stage engineering iterative process starts with mapping permanent and sinking hoisting layouts, followed by laying out horizontal deck plans, mostly constrained by the permanent shaft purpose and configuration, whilst maximizing openings to enable muck to be removed rapidly for the best sinking cycles. Concurrently the designer needs to understand the chosen sinking methodologies in conjunction with crewing to determine the number of decks and fix their spacing. Insufficient access to move and line up formwork, set reinforcing rods and pour concrete in the confined spaces of the stage is an inherent major risk to be mitigated. An iterative and integrative process follows for the primary configuration which delves into increasing design detail, accommodating all other methodology influences, resulting in 3D layouts for further risk assessment, review and fine tuning by seasoned shaftsmen. INTRODUCTION Documented colliery shaft sinking practice from the late 1800’s makes reference to purpose built walling (bricked lining) cribs with floors suspended in sinking shafts, thereby allowing shaft lining to proceed concurrently with the excavation. Improvements were made by Sir William Galloway who introduced two decks supported at the corners by angle irons. The sinking stage, or Galloway, has developed substantially over time to be the in-barrel heart of the sinking operation, with overwhelming complexity for those who have to design one for the first time."

It used to be that a science/engineering presentation on "light weight" at a metallurgy conference, would relate to the materials science, processing, component fabrication and applications of aluminum, magnesium and titanium. Within the automotive industry, light weight now includes how to "lighten up", how to lightweight, or how to mass reduce vehicle components and systems. Increasingly stringent global emissions-reduction requirements require increasing vehicle fuel efficiency; mass reduction is an enabler to achieve this. While light metals certainly are the basis, a host of other materials can be used to optimize mass reduction while meeting vehicle performance, safety and cost requirements. New grades of ultrahigh strength steels and even nanosteels can be thinned down and save over 1/3 the mass vs conventional mild steels. A compacted graphite cast iron engine can be made lighter than an aluminum one. Aluminum components in vehicles were only castings; now aluminum stampings, forgings and extrusions are becoming more visible components of mass reduction. Lower mass high temperature polymers, and carbon fiber polymer composites now replace aluminum and steel. These materials often require specialized processing and manufacturing techniques to produce a component, including superplastically formed twin roll cast sheet aluminum and magnesium, and hot stamped/in-mold quenched steels. The assembly of hybrid structures requires unique joining/bonding, and corrosion-inhibiting techniques that might include sophisticated structural adhesives. This thinking "light" presentation, will conclude with a discussion of U.S. and Canadian government engineering and research support for mass reduction, including the proposed $148 M American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

Ventilation of underground workings consists in establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, and without impairment of health; and requires that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from these workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and that, at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically-operated fans, together with other;. ventilating devices such as doors, over-casts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or small, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural air flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion, mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them. While ventilation has practically always been deemed an integral part of coal mining, metal mines have rarely paid much, if any, attention to air circulation until forced to do so by occurrence of some untoward condition or accident. Yet metal mines actually have as great need of efficient circulation of air as have coal mines. The coal mine must remove the dangerous explosive gas, methane, also fumes from explosives and, in occasional places, other gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen.

"Feasible and sustainable separation of lanthanides outside of China has been a dilemma for the past few years. The present technique uses REE electrophoretic mobility (Ui) variation in an electrical field to separate them. The present invention relates to a system and a method to separate and refine rare earth elements/compounds produced in hydrometallurgical processes while they are dissolved in an acidic medium, without any intermediate precipitation step. This process uses free-flow electrophoresis to isolate REE from the concentrate simultaneously without any pre-treatment or intermediate steps related to the nature of elements.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) invariably occur together in nature, and any given mineral contains several or most of them. Production of high purity individual rare earth (RE) elements/compounds from their ores generally requires two stages of processing, including mineral processing and hydrometallurgy.Depending on the ore, mineral processing and hydrometallurgy treatment of the ore before REEs purification is relatively simple and quite achievable though conventional methods. However, producing individual REE from mixed REs compounds is tremendously tedious. RE processing often requires dozens of steps, each resulting in minute improvement in the complex RE streams. Separating and extracting a single REE requires a great deal of time, resources, and expertise. Today, advanced RE refinery facilities cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build. The high purity RE concentrates are separated into individual REE using solvent-based or ion exchange methods. Although there are several techniques to separate REEs, most of them suffer from different types of drawbacks. For instance, solvent extraction requires a great number of steps to achieve high purity REEs. The process which uses ion-exchanger for separation and refinery operates with low REE concentration in solution which leads to very large liquid volume quantity, bulky tanks, dehydrators, pumps, etc. The low concentration will adversely affect the water consumption as well as other chemicals. Similar chemical properties of those three valent elements do not allow them to be isolated easily one from one another using conventional separation techniques. Solvent extraction has been successfully applied for rare-earth refining (lanthanide, scandium and yttrium) for the past few decades in China. Since then, efforts have been dedicated to develop other techniques which could be applied industrially around the world."

"INTRODUCTIONWestern Mines' copper-lead-zinc operations are located in Strathcona Provincial Park, near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island. This park includes Buttle Lake, which flows into the Campbell River water system. The latter provides domestic water for the Town of Campbell River, approximately fifty-eight miles from the mine site.Operation of the concentrator commenced in December 1966, at which time the tailings were discharged into a small tailings pond near the plant. On May 8, 1967 Permit No. 185 was granted to the company, allowing discharge of the tailings, through a submerged outfall, to the bottom of Buttle Lake.Needless to say, the concept of operating a mine within a park, and the discharge of tailings into Buttle Lake generated considerable controversy. However, this has all but been eliminated over the years by the proven effectiveness of Western Mines' pollution control program. In 1973 this program was further upgraded with the addition of an alkaline chlorination plant. Effluent treatment by this method became necessary as a result of process modifications, and has been effective in maintaining the levels of characteristics in the tailings within the ever increasing pollution control requirements imposed on the industry."

Shotcrete is a practical and economical support system in many Canadian underground mines. Although shotcrete technology has gained acceptance in the mining industry, there are some problems that have emerged with respect to quality assessment and thickness measurement of the liner. This paper presents recent tests performed with miniature seismic reflection technology (MSR) developed and patented at McGill University primarily for thickness measurement of this heterogeneous liner. MSR is also capable of providing information regarding the quality of shotcrete in terms of its mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. Work was performed on site in an underground mine in Ontario, Canada. This paper also presents the results from laboratory tests performed on fiber-reinforced and non-reinforced shotcrete panels that were used to assess the P-wave velocity in both materials. The results of these tests were used in a second site investigation. The NDT thickness measurements showed good agreement with direct thickness measurement such as coring. In addition, the MSR technology has the advantage of being more accurate and more affordable compared to other non-destructive testing (NDT) systems in the market.

Introduction The world has been suffering from an excessive production of all kinds of raw materials, and the metals and petroleum are no exception. As a consequence, at the moment, the urge to find new mineral deposits is almost non-existent and prospecting languishes. But from previous experience we know that sooner or later new supplies will be needed. Mineral deposits become exhausted, and to keep up the supplies of our metals and petroleum, new deposits must be found. Even now, a supply of petroleum of domestic production would not be unwelcome in Canada. It is not, therefore, so entirely malapropos to discuss means of finding ores and oil as it would seem. Almost any physical property connected in definite manner with minerals and rocks may be made the basis of geophysical exploration. This is particularly true of electrical resistivity, and its utilization in electrical prospecting has been the deciding factor in the discovery of such big ore-bodies as Buchans mine, Newfoundland, and the large copper ore-bodies in northern Sweden, etc., as well as in the solution of many foundation and structural problems. The importance of electrical prospecting has been growing steadily, and already there exists hardly any exploration project involving geological problems which may not profit by its application. Electrical prospecting is marching on, and neither temporary failures, nor incompetence, nor over-optimism, nor ill-will and pessimism, nor bad times and business depression, will be able to halt its progress.

In the overall open pit mine planning process, mining phase design is a strategic driver in guiding and constructing the block extraction sequence and determining the annual net cash flow distribution. Mining phase design should obey some practical constraints, such as ?minimum mining width? and ?flat mining phase bottom?, to allow space for haul road development and truck and shovel access on each bench. However, these practical mining phase design requirements are not taken into account in all first-cut mining phase design methods and post-processing is always required to convert an impractical design to a practical one, resulting in a potentially significant loss of Net Present Value (NPV) relative to the first-cut impractical designs. In this paper, we present a method using a meta-heuristic algorithm ? Simulated Annealing ? to enforce those practical constraints in determining a mineable phase design whilst ensuring minimum NPV loss.

"In refractory gold concentrates, gold is occluded in sulphide minerals preventing efficient cyanide leaching. Hence, roasting is used to oxidize sulphur and organic carbon, the latter being necessary to minimize recovery loss through the preg-robbing effect. In 2009, Outotec commissioned the circulating fluidized bed roaster at Syama gold mine in Mali. Since 2013 Resolute and Outotec have been implementing improvements to the roaster performance with the capacity increasing from 8000 t/month in 2013 to above 13,000 t/month in 2016, while achieving a residual sulphide sulphur and organic carbon contents of below 0.1 wt.% and 0.4 wt.%, respectively. Thus a gold recovery in the CIL of above 90% is attained. In 2016, Outotec audited the Syama roaster. The analysis resulted in the Low Carbon Roaster (LCR) upgrade concept which (i) allows re-processing of calcine dust from the spray cooler and ESP after pelletization and (ii) allows the roasting of a further fine-organic carbon rich feed, i.e. de-slime circuit tailings. The LCR upgrade aims to reduce organic carbon to <0.2 wt.% and increase roaster-leaching gold recovery by >3%. Project development included extensive testwork. The LCR process is expected to become operational during FY 2019.INTRODUCTION Double refractory sulphide ores exhibit the characteristics of gold locked within pyrite grains, in the presence of preg-robbing natural (organic) carbon. Hence, to achieve high recovery during subsequent processing steps, i.e. cyanide leaching, oxidation of sulphide sulphur is required, producing a porous calcine by way of a roasting step. This allows for the gold contained within the pyrite grains to be accessible during cyanide leaching. Furthermore, it is necessary to oxidize the organic carbon. Oxidizing the organic carbon is essential as gold recovery loss occurs as a result of gold-cyanide complexes being adsorbed on organic carbon, this phenomenon is termed as preg-robbing (Miller et al., 2016). The gold absorbed on the organic carbon is lost, reporting to the tailings stream. Hence, the aforementioned oxidation of sulphide sulphur and organic carbon is the process goal. Nonetheless, the latter must occur at a controlled temperature which is concentrate/ ore specific, since the pores of the produced calcine should not sinter, as this makes the gold contained in the calcine less accessible during leaching, leading to gold recovery loss. The tight temperature control requirement is a decisive factor in the choice of a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) as the roasting reactor, due to the excellent mixing characteristics of the CFB which results in temperature homogeneity of (+/-10°C). Roasting of double refractory ores, as described above, can be included in the flowsheet after comminution and grinding, a process termed as whole ore roasting, or by including a flotation circuit termed as concentrate roasting. Roasting the flotation concentrate results in less solid flow, increased sulphide sulphur grade and organic carbon content resulting in a higher heating value and higher gold content. A typical composition of the Syama ore and concentrate is given in Table 1. Ore average values presented correspond to the period 2015, while concentrate values are typical for the flotation performance throughout the period 2012–2015."

Placer Dome is learning from experience in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as in North America, that contributing effectively to sustainable human progress in the areas of its operations presents unending challenges to think creatively, communicate effectively and remain culturally sensitive. People must be better off in terms of their economic circumstances, their social conditions and the quality of their natural environment not only during the life of the mines, but after mines close. Stakeholders, all those who are directly or indirectly affected by a mining project, should be able to participate in decisions which affect them. The development of sustainability strategies, the monitoring of sustainability performance and the implementation of sustainability programs are best done in partnerships with governments, communities, nongovernmental organizations and multilateral development institutions. Ultimately, the success, if not the survival of mining, will depend on our ability to get the sustainability equation correct.

The Tata Steel mill at Skinningrove in the North East of England produces top hat sections for mineshaft guides in sizes 102 and 150 mm. The top hat section is the technically preferred shaft guide choice for modern deep mine shafts. This paper explores the relative service performance of top hat and square hollow section guides in service. Comparative corrosion performance is reviewed and the paper describes work commissioned by Tata Steel (as Corus) undertaken by Aker Kvaerner Engineering to evaluate relative winding speeds, relative loads and fatigue life in service. The experience of supply to UK Potash mining is discussed and the future view of high capacity hoisting and larger section size market need and availability is assessed.

"At first glance, the activities related to mining and mineral exploration appear to be local or domestic, rather than international, in nature. Minerals, as corporeal or tangible property, form an integral part of the land in which they are found until extracted and exploited commercially. Even in the latter phase, the tangible nature of minerals gives the impression that the law governing the commercialization of minerals is the law of their situs at any given time. The nature of minerals appears to negate the international aspect of mineral enterprises.The fundamental flaw in the above analysis is its focus upon the nature of minerals, rather than the role of persons in mineral enterprises. The high costs of mineral exploration and commercialization invariably require the involvement of international consortiums or joint ventures. Governments may not have access to the funds necessary to exploit the mineral resources that they control. Local or domestic enterprises may not have sufficient expertise for mineral exploration. Further, markets for various types of minerals are far from localized or static. For these and other reasons, the tangible and localized nature of minerals belies the fundamentally international nature of mineral exploration and commercialization."

In any discussion on the subject of mine-safety, it is well to honestly face the fact at the outset that mining is a hazardous occupation and that certain inherent dangers attach to the work, which, in spite of the greatest vigilance on the part of everyone concerned, will from time to time exact their toll of in jury or death from the underground worker. Great progress has been made of late years in narrowing down the range of these necessary risks, and, illustrative of what can be done along these lines by concerted effort, it is pleasing to read from time to time of large operating mines running for weeks, months, a year or more, without a single lost-time accident. To achieve any results in the work of accident prevention it is necessary, first, to have a definite goal, such as a no-accident period, be it a week, a month, or a year, to aim at; and, second, to set up definite standards to work by. The legal code of regulations should form the basis of all standards of work at every mine and should, for this reason, cover as far as possible all conceivable phases of operation. This represents the ideal, but in practice it is unattainable, largely because of the many variables that must be considered, due to the divergence in the scale of operations and to differing geological conditions at the different mines. Hence it becomes necessary for the operator who wishes to attain the maximum in the establishment of high standards of safe operation to so amplify the code as to meet the peculiar requirements of his operation.

A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered.
