Radioisotope X-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for on-stream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay. The radioisotope X-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

During October 1947 an Authority to Prospect was granted by the Minister of Mines to lVIount Isa Mines Limited over an area of approximately 75 sq. miles to the north of Mount Isa.Application for the Authority to Prospect had been made after Zinc Corporation Limited had been granted prospecting rights over two areas, one of 1,265 acres immediately to the north of the Mount Isa Mines leases and the other of 1,960 acres adjoining the south end of Mount Isa Mines leases.METHODSAs a means of providing a cheap map of sufficient accuracy on which to plot geological features, both Mount Isa Mines Limited and Zinc Corporation Limited agreed upon aerial photographs and the two companies shared the cost of an aerial photographic survey by Adastra Airways of 130 sq. miles which covered the prospecting areas held by both companies.The photographs were on a scale of 800 ft. to I in. with 60% overlap on the north-south runs and 25% overlap east-west. A set of alternate prints enlarged to 400 ft. to 1 \in. were obtained for field work. The 400 ft. to 1 in. scale unglossed photographs (size 18 in. x 18 in.) were taken On to the field and rock outcrops, and uncorrelated structures were plotted directly on to them in red crayon pencil. The geological observations were then transferred in the office to a tracing on which accuracy of azimuth and scale was controlled by use of a photo mosaic and ground surveys.

Depressed prices for minerals will force the mining industry to became more efficient. The continuous conveying of pit product is one area in which savings can be made. Conveyors are available, or can be adapted to provide the flexibility and reliability required. Each conveying system will need to be custom designed to suit the particular requirements of the mine. The Australian mining industry must take the initiative and accept the challenge of the new technology.

An advanced technique for modelling hydrocyclone separation performance has been developed. This technique is based on the combined modelling of hydrocycloning parameters and ævirtualÆ iron ore feed. The virtual feed modelling was performed using a novel (in-house) software package called æRecognitionÆ, which uses data from optical image analysis to classify the particles in certain size fractions according to total iron content and calculates data for every grade class. These data include the average mineral composition and density of every liberation class in every size fraction. This information about every size fraction, representing the ævirtual feedÆ, was input to the mineral processing modelling package USIM PAC. The hydrocycloning process was then modelled for this virtual feed using the Plitt hydrocyclone model. Empirical calibration coefficients for the hydrocyclone model were calculated using an optimisation procedure in Excel. Pilot-scale hydrocyclone beneficiation experiments were performed on an iron ore blend, using different hydrocyclone pressures and per cent solids in the feed pulp. These experiments were modelled and the modelling results were compared with the experimental results. The new modelling approach enables prediction of the recovery of each mineral in the products, calculation of the total iron grade and recovery, and optimisation of iron ore beneficiation using hydrocyclones.

Light metals have great potential for application in the automotive and aerospace industries because of their excellent physical properties. The usage of aluminium, titanium and magnesium is limited by relatively high costs of production, associated energy costs and large ecological footprint. In the case of aluminium, significant improvement to the Hall-HTroult process is still achievable through advances in cell design, materials and process control. Alternative production processes, including carbothermic reduction and low temperature routes are also possible. Magnesium and titanium production are currently dominated by batch metallothermic processes and new process routes are required to develop these industries. Research at CSIRO, through the Light Metals Flagship, is currently focused on step change improvements in the production of light metals, aimed at lowering energy usage, increasing productivity and reducing the overall environmental impact. In this paper, the overall status of the existing technologies will be described, highlighting areas that are being developed around the world and at CSIRO.

The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. An image analysis system has been built which automatically digitizes camera input of rock fragments, analyses the digitised data to determine the sizes and shapes of the rock fragments, and outputs the analysed data to a printer in the form of a histogram or a scatter chart. The high speed of such a system allows for direct collection of data from material thrown into the air by blasting, material travelling on a conveyor belt, and material free-falling on to a stock-pile or into or out of a rock-crusher. Data on the blasted, un-crushed material provides information on changes in the lithology and structure of the rock face as it is quarried or mined: flatter fragments may represent approach to a brittle, unstable shear zone, or a change from sandstone to shale; so that the informa- tion reflects the effect on the sizes and shapes of the fragments by the blasting process and/or by the rock structure. The size and shape distributions of rock fragments produced during blasting and during processing may now be continuously monitored. Such detailed analysis of the results of fragmentation is labour-intensive and expensive when the size and shape distributions are obtained manually, but is cheap and efficient when using this image analysis system. Such a system will enable the results of blasting, quarrying, mining and crushing to be cheaply analysed and correlated with current and changing indus- trial practice so leading the way to increased productivity.

The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

Amongst the Pacific Rim countries, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the leader in new gold discoveries and developments leading to new production. PNG has shown a dramatic increase in gold production when taken from a base of about 600 000 ounces in 1984 to 1 160 000 ounces in 1986. 1987 is expected to produce about 1 500 000 ounces and new planned developments will give further large increases. PNG's leading position when compared with neighboring Pacific Rim countries is only partly due to its favorable geological setting along the "Rim of Fire" epithermal zone. More important have been well-thought-out mining development legislation and good administration as well as consistent taxation and royalty policies. A stable political environment and a track record of new mining developments over the last 15 years, both pre and post Independence in 1975, have also been important factors in encouraging the new developments. Early Portuguese explorers associated the New Guinea mainland with gold as early as 1525 but it was not un,11 1R77 that a small ill-fated gold rush gave the first recorded production at Laloki near Port Moresby. Modest but commercial discoveries were made in the outer islands and coastal mainland regions from 1888 to 1926. In 1922 William "Sharkeye" Park found gold at Edie Creek and this led to major discoveries at Wau and Bulolo which were the first large scale commercial gold Operations.

Analysis of different environmental scenarios and to represent, spatially, of impacted areas is possible by the use of geoprocessing techniques, specifically Systems of Geographical Information (SIG). Through these systems it is possible to create dynamic mathematical models, constituting of a georeferenced digital database and employing the integrated data originated from several sources. In this context, the general goal of this paper is to apply this tool in an environmental analysis of a specific karstic area impacted by mining activities. In order to preserve a limestone site, internationally recognised by its archaeological features, including caverns, lakes and evidences of prehistoric ages, the Brazilian government has created the Lagoa Santa Environment Protection Area. This place is located in the proximity of the Belo Horizonte international airport. In the past two decades exploitations of dimension stones have increased in this area. These exploitations have been done without a mine plan promoting several environmental impacts. The objective of this paper is to analyse these activities using SIG as a basic tool to locate the main mining related impacts and propose mitigation measures including waste and tailings disposal and reshaping of the landscape and introducing a drainage system for the considered zone.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) is a management company, formed in 1989, to manage the assets and operate the Kalgoorlie joint venture for the owner companies Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Limited (GMK) and Homestake Gold of Australia Limited (HGAL). Gold/silver orebodies of the Golden Plateau deposit, Cracow, Central Queensland, are currently being exploited by the Cracow Mining Venture. A geostatistical block model has been prepared to assist with long term mine planning. The Golden Plateau orebody, of inferred epithermal origin, is a multiply brecciated, silicified fault complex containing irregular, tabular and pipe- like oreshoots. Historically the lode has been stoped and open cut over a strike length of 750 metres at widths of up to 15 metres and to a depth of 250 metres. The Golden Plateau mine produced 1.55 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 12 g/t Au and 13.5 g/t Ag over a 42 year period. In the preparation of the reserve model much reliance has been placed on recent diamond and reverse circulation drilling (71 holes in total). However a significant volume of data has been derived from historical level assays and underground diamond drilling. Over 3,000 level assays and 50 underground drill holes contributed to the database. Similar lognormal populations were observed for 1 metre composite grades from each major drilling campaign once corrections were made for core loss. Cumulative frequency plots revealed only one outlier which was cut to the population line. The population statistics from the historical level assays showed a significant difference from those derived from the drill hole composites. Level assay populations were cut to local drill hole populations before incorporation into the ore reserve model. The resulting data has yielded interpretable variograms, the parameters of which have been applied to the preparation of a kriged block model of the deposit.

Yandicoogina (Yandi) open pit mine is located in the eastern part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It hosts pisolitic iron-oxide mineralisation distributed within a meandering paleoriver channel. The deposit is characterised by clays occurring as lenses, accretions, desiccation joint infill and voids in the pisolite ore. The irregular shapes and highly erratic distribution of these clay pods represent a serious challenge for grade control at this mine.The current grade control approach used at the Yandi mine is based on sampling of production blastholes on a 6 m X 6 m spacing. Their good spatial coverage, tight spacing and low cost make blastholes a very convenient media for grade control and ore-waste definition. However the potential downside of this grade control approach is poor sample representivity. An alternative grade control approach is to drill and sample using reverse circulation (RC) holes distributed on a 25 m X 25 m grid. This approach has been tested in Yandi mine and compared with the blasthole sampling approach for sample representivity. The impact of increased drill spacing on mining block predictions has been studied using a conditional simulation technique. Blasthole and RC samples proved to be similarly biased, underestimating Al2O3 and SiO2 grades and overestimating Fe grades, when compared to full cone assays. These results show that using RC drilling for grade control at the Yandi open pit will not necessarily improve the representivity of the grade control samples. However, increasing the grade control spacing to 25 m X 25 m will lead to more than 12 per cent of the selective mining unit (SMU) sized blocks being misclassified. This is approximately a two-fold increase in the number of misclassified SMU blocks in comparison with 5 m X 5 m spacing.

Coal fines are recognised to have a major impact on the cost and efficiency of the recovery of saleable coal. Fines affect the productivity of the whole mining cycle because of the low yields obtained in washing this material as well as affecting the moisture content and handling characteristics of the final product.In 1990, Coal and Allied Hunter Valley Mine initiated an internal study into coal fines based on the assumption that a reduction in fine coal in ROM material will lead to increase yields in the preparation plant. The initial results of this study indicated that the level of fines in the ROM coal can be reduced by more than 40 per cent by simple changes in blast design and implementation.

The financing of mineral ventures is usually supported by the valuation of a mineral asset, the physical size and composition of which have been determined within quantified limits of accuracy in order that the lending or investment risk can be assessed. The Resource or Ore Reserve estimation is the measurement of that asset and may be the outcome of complicated processes of interpretation and estimation requiring an extensive knowledge and understanding of the general nature of ore occurrences, and of the particular deposit under review. In arriving at an interpretation of the nature and physical distribution of minerals in a deposit, observations may only be available from widely spaced samples and geological knowledge and principles are of prime importance. Consultants may be asked by the lending or investing body to "provide comfort" on the quality of the Resource or Reserve estimations and providing such comfort casts substantial obligations of diligence on the consultant.

The treatment of nickel ores and concentrates and the subsequent processing to recover separate products of nickel and cobalt is one of the major interests at present in the mining industry. The increasing demand for nickel, and more recently also cobalt, has led to increased exploration for ore sources. Major discoveries have resulted in Canada and Australia. These deposits, as well as others already known, are presently being developed and the process technology tested and evaluated for applicability to the different mineralogical types - mainly sulphide, arsenide and oxide laterites. Concentrates may be treated by either hydro- or pyrometallurgical processes, while the nickel laterites are best suited to hydrometallurgical processing. However, if hydrometallurgy is used, once the ore or concentrate is leached the resultant solutions are then amenable to similar separation technologies for purification and recovery of high purity nickel and cobalt products. Solvent extraction, together with other separation processes such as precipitation, can produce high purity solutions of nickel and cobalt. The final products of these solutions may be nickel and cobalt cathodes, metal powders precipitates or salts, depending on the final process of electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, precipitation, or crystallisation Respectively.
