A detailed analysis of faulting indicatcs that blocks of "greenstone" have been thrust beneath the southern end of the Mt. Isa orebodies.This "greenstone" basement is considered to be a major structural control in the localization of these orebodies.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on exploration carried out by Mining Corporation (Aust.) N.L. from 1956 to 1960 in the area immediately south of Mt. Isa, Queensland. During this period over 20,000 ft of diamond drilling was completed together with costeaning and geochemical exploration.Early in 1959, it became apparent that diamond drill information could not be correlated with the current geological concepts of this area and a detailed geological appraisal became necessary. In all, sixty square miles were mapped at a scale of 1 in. to 500 ft, using enlarged aerial photographs. All drill core was logged and sections re-interpreted.Professor K. C. Dunham of the University of Durham consulted on this project and contributed through valuable discussion. Dr. A. Day of the University of Sydney carried out a gravity survey in February 1960 and Dr. H. Wilshire of the same University undertook microscopic examination of rocks from the area. Willyamite from the type locality, Consols mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W., has been re-examined, and found to consist of zones with widely different Co:Ni ratios. The name willyamite is redefined to include the portion of the (Co, Ni)SbS series with cobalt in excess of nickel. Willyamite is pseudo-cubic, with the three axes equal to within 0·001 A.

Several Approaches to Enhance the Bioleaching of Enargite Some approaches were investigated to enhance the recovery of Cu from enargite by bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans using the galvanic interaction with pyrite and activated carbon, and with thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi. Addition of pyrite initially enhanced Cu leaching by the Galvanic effect, but after that the formation of secondary minerals passivated the surface of enargite in inoculated batches. Activated carbon improved Cu recovery from enargite much better than pyrite, when it is contacted with enargite. Recovery of Cu from enargite has been recorded to at largest 2.4 per cent within 30 days in the presence of activated carbon when mesophilic bacteria were inoculated at 25¦C. The recovery of Cu from enargite was drastically enhanced by inoculation of thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi, up to 60 per cent within 40 days at 70¦C and still not leveled off after 40 days unless the formation of Fe(III) precipitates occurred. After 40 days dissolved molar ratio of Cu/As is around 5.2, suggesting that metal-deficient sulfides and/or ferric arsenate might be formed on the surface of enargite.

THE present article makes no claim to be exhaustive, since it cannot contain all the knowledge which scientists and manufacturers of the compounds of the rare earths have gained. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. The techniques of geological control developed by the Coal Geology Sections of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Proprietary Limited in providing geological service in the coilieries operated by these associated companies cover the provision of geological control for both planning and production in each of which the significance of geology has in the past been only poorly appreciated by the coal mining industry.While the adoption of similar techniques is well within the capacity of major companies there is considerable scope for the development of government geological services providing specialized assistance of this nature for smaller scale producers.INTRODUCTIONThe coal mining industry in Australia can instance many notable mistakes caused by failure to obtain sufficient geological information or by incorrect interpretation of available geological evidence both before the commencement of mining and during the progress of operations. Substantial development undertaken in, areas with insufficient or inferior coal reserves, difficult mining conditions caused by failure to adjust operations to geological circumstances, and the irregular development of mine workings caused by unexpected geological features, all bear witness to the lack of geological foresight by the industry.Along with the more widespread general use of applied geology, an increasing acceptance has developed during the past ten years of the valuable contribution which can be made by this science to the exploitation of coalfields. In spite of the advances which have been made, there is still a wide scope for further detailed application of geology throughout the coal mining industry in Australia.

Seafield ResourcesÆ offshore placer gold project covers c.10 000 km2 of the Westland continental shelf between Karamea and Jacksons Head, from the low-water mark out to the 120 m isobath (Figure 1). De Beers Marine (DBM), the marine diamond subsidiary of the De Beers Group, will carry out the project with geological input from Placer Solutions (PSL). DBM bring a wealth of expertise and advanced technology to the project, developed during their 20 years of exploration and mining of diamond placers on the Atlantic shelf of southern Africa, where they have also maintained a strong environmental record.   Glaciers and high-energy rivers emanating from the Southern Alps have transported substantial quantities of gold bearing sediment onto the Westland continental shelf during Pleistocene glacial periods, when fluvial gradients are steeper, sea level is c.120 m lower and most of the shelf is exposed. These deposits have been extensively reworked by the advancing shoreline and marine processes during interglacial marine transgressions, and most are now buried beneath a variable thickness of post-glacial marine sand, silt and mud. DBM will use side-scan sonar, swath bathymetry, Chirp sub-bottom profiling and a magnetometer to map the sea floor and sediments beneath it, guided by PSLÆs predictive geological model for gold distribution on the shelf. Cactus grab and vibro-core samples will be used to ground-truth the geophysics and provide stratigraphic, sedimentological and gold distribution data for incorporation into the geological model. Areas of interest identified by the geophysical and sampling data will be investigated in more detail, with closer-spaced geophysics and Mega-drill sampling to a maximum sediment depth of 20 m beneath the sea floor. These samples will be raised to the ship with air-lift suction technology, processed onboard for mineralogical and grade information, then returned to the sea floor. Environmental baseline data will be gathered from Van Veen grab samples of seabed sediment taken throughout the area during the prospecting programme.

The smelting plant and equipment at Mount Isa, as originally designed and built, was described by J. M. Callow (1) *.F. A. Forward (2) described alterations and additions to the plant and discussed the metallurgy of mixed carbonate-sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa, prior to 1933, in the Proceedings of this Institute.In 1933, A. F. McAskill (3) gave full mechanical details of the plant in a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers, Aust.FLOW SHEETSFig. No. 1 represents the present general flow sheet. Forward's (2) flow sheet is reproduced here as Fig. lA, and will serve for comparison in depicting subsequent deletions from, and alterations and additions to, the plant.Fig. No. 2 presents the daily tonnage flow sheet of 1939 practice.ALTERATIONS SINCE 1933General. Many changes in metallurgy and operation have taken place, particularly subsequent to March, 1935, when the treatment of a mixture of carbonate and sulphide ores was discontinued and the mill commenced operating on all-sulphide ore. This alteration brought about the elimination of gravity concentration-Jigs and Tables and resulted in the production of all-floatation concentrates of a very fine sizing. Refer Table No. 2, page?) The Porgera Joint Venture commenced production during September 1990. A small tonnage underground mine extracts high grade gold ore using small scale stopes. Conventional drill and blast methods are used for development and production mining. Ground support is effected with Splitset anchors, grouted rebar bolts and grouted cable bolts. Splitsets and grouted rebar can be installed by mechanised means. Vertical crater retreat, slot and massfire, and modified VCR stoping tech- niques are used at Porgera. Stopes are backfilled with a relatively strong cemented rockf ill. Future stope sequences require recovery of pillars beside and under filled stopes.

THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? Some people consider maintenance to be the work involved in putting things together again after they have fallen apart. The author regards it as the mechanical care and repair of plant machinery and equipment to keep it operating in sound mechanical condition, without undue interference with production processes.Maintenance may be organized or haphazard, and, too often, what has been fondly imagined to be nicely controlled and organized maintenance proves, under pressure, to be more correctly described as haphazard. Haphazard maintenance deals with breakdowns as they occur, and frequently finds itself confronted with more breakdowns than can be handled. The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region (North West Province in South Africa) produced a substance called CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The CRUD was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the CRUD confirmed that exposed CRUD leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil.   Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, ie sulfuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels ie 0.001 M, 0.0001 M and 0.00001 M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulfuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling increased.   Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil's porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

In responding to why some longwall roadway development rates are different among mines, the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG) of Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has initiated a benchmarking study to survey each longwall mine to determine the correlation between roadway development practices and roadway development performances. This paper describes a web-based relational database system which has been developed purposely to monitor the performance of Australian longwall roadway developments aimed at assessing both the physical and operational factors which could influence roadway development practices and their performance indicators. Statistical analysis of an earlier survey suggested that continuous miner units that achieved more than 1750 m were units mining two-heading development.

IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand. The reform of New ZealandÆs minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New ZealandÆs resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990. With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

Using a cylindrical hydrocyclone with a long vortex finder as the separator, a batch sizer was developed for the fast comparative sizing of the coarse solids normally encountered in mineral pulps.Operating times as short as 2 or 3 min gave separations ranging from 16 mesh down to the subsieve sizes.Reproducibility was good and sensitivity was adequate for most applications.
