IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. When lying over 200-250m depth, many seams and surrounding strata are gassy enough to create mining difficulties , particularly in highly productive longwalls as well as in their development headings. In addition to the gassiness of seams or stra- ta in the outgassing volume around working, the shape expansion and limits of this one influences much the intensity of gas emission. These charac- teristics of outgassing volume differ very much ac- cording to the permeabilities of the seams and strata encountered by their fracturation due to mi- ning. Moreover, the shape of the outgassing volume is very much modified by the rate of advance of the face. In nearly impermeable deposits, gas flows from a limited outgassing volume. When the rates of advance of a face are medium or low, the shape and dimensions of this volume do not change very much and outgassing volume is translated progressi- vely with the face advance. This explains why, in the past, it was observed that there was for each seam an average steady specific emission of gas, round which the volume of gas evolved per mined ton or per mined unit area, calculated over a cer- tain time, was oscillating. Combined with a statisti- cal irregularity coefficient, this allowed prediction gas of emission and thus to take decisions for air ventilation, drainage, and eventually production.

Mine geology is understood through synthesising large amounts of structural, lithological, geochemical and geophysical data derived from the original topographic surface, drilling and surfaces exposed and removed during open cut and underground excavations. Computer- generated 3D geological models of any mine environment need to incorporate large amounts of information but also should be regularly updated with typically frequent influxes of new data. Geologists with the local knowledge should also be involved in the model construction, enhancement and interpretation, placing ease-of-use functionality high on modelling software requirements. Implicit-style modelling is a fast-growing area of 3D geological software development where interpolated surfaces such as lithology boundaries and bedding orientations are defined mathematically as functions rather than explicitly through coordinate meshes. The functions are constrained only by the data and not by an artificially imposed grid; therefore, implicit 3D modelling can process a lot of information quickly and routinely operate on original data (such as observed contacts and structural data) rather than on evolved iterations and interpretations. 3D mine geology models can be readily updated with new data, which can be automatically reprocessed to test ideas in near-real time. Implicit, function-based 3D modelling software has been applied to the Globe-Progress mine in West Coast, New Zealand. This structurally- hosted gold mine has some geometrical conundrums that are in part being resolved as excavation of the open pit proceeds. The relationship of the Globe-Progress ore shoots to hanging wall and footwall structure is still not fully understood, however, and 3D geological modelling is assisting with visualisation and testing of structural hypotheses. The modelling is also capable of predicting areas of bedding defect slope failure in yet-to-be excavated parts of the mine.

A simulation of the fluid flow, minera- logical and chemical aspects of in situ leaching is being developed for application to the recovery of metals from unbroken, naturally jointed rock. The fluid flow aspect has been developed. The rock is assumed to have a double-fracture property. A major joint set is responsible for bulk flow of solution, while a minor joint set, intersecting with the major set, allows the solution to contact the reactive minerals. The two-dimensional fluid flow through the major joint set is analysed by a streamline model for a particular well pattern. The other important components of the model are described briefly.

The ash content of coal can be determined using radioisotope X-ray techniques. A number of overseas applications of X-ray techniques are described; however these suffer from the disadvantage of either not compensating for iron variations or, if compensation is used, using X-rays of low penetration with consequent sampling difficulties. Current Australian Atomic Energy Commiss- ion (AAEC) research on X-ray techniques is aimed at overcoming the limitations of these methods. The AAEC method involves making measurements proportional to mass absorption coefficients of X-rays in coal at two energies. Calculations and experiments with X-rays up to 35 keV have shown that ash content can be determined to about 1 wt.%. This work is being extended to higher X-ray energies to enable the technique to be used directly on a conveyor belt or in a hopper. Neutron techniques can be used to measure the concentration of specific elements such as carbon, hydrogen and silicon in coal. Their con- centration is correlated to the coal parameters of interest. Methods of moisture determination based on hydrogen measurement and ash determina- tion based on silicon and aluminium measurement are described. Roof bolting with resin bonded bolts has been developed extensively in French coal mines. There are three aspects of this development: 1. The reason for and the care used in the development of roof bolting from use as a reinforcement in a classical arched roadway to use as the only support in roadways in ad- vance of the working face (the roadway being reinforced behind the face); 2. The problems encountered and studied, such as choice of boltable roadways and determination of the technical data in designing a roof bolting pattern; 3. Only because roof bolting has been controlled by safety rules, and especially by accurate measurement of strata behaviour, has this system of support been expanded aapidly in France since 1967.

From experience in the design and operation of power station combustion facilities in most mainland Australian States, involving a wide range of black coals and lignites, and in the specification and procurement of coal supplies for power station use, techniques for the optimisation of coal resource development and power generation utilisation have been developed to ensure compatibility between characteristics of the selected coals and power station design. These techniques include computer data bases for resource data handling and computer simulation of coal-fired boilers for determining coal property cost effects. Data Base Systems allow results of coal analyses to be efficiently handled, to assist in the review of the relevance of resource data to the coal sections proposed to be mined and the coal fractions proposed to be marketed. Data Base Systems also facilitate the marshalling of coal quality data into basic utilisation format to enable a proper utilisation review and analysis of the certainty and scatter of coal properties. Computer simulation of the effects of different coal properties on the capital and operating cost of power stations is achieved by establishing conceptual design parameters of the major items of plant to relate the variations in coal specification to equipment size and type. Variations in power station budget costs can then be determined using the computer model for variations in coal specification.

This paper provides a brief historical background to the approximately 12-year project that led to the revision of rope selection factors in the South African regulations, thus providing the ability to hoist economical payloads from single lift ultra-deep shafts. The efforts over the past 20 years have led to the revision of the legislation pertaining to rope selection factors, the redesign of rope constructions to meet the required duties associated with ultra-deep shafts, codes of practice for the design, operation and maintenance of winding plants, and a code of practice for the condition assessment of winder ropes. As a consequence the Moab Khotsong ultra-deep hoisting system could be developed and installed, with the assurance of predictable performance. Access to deep orebodies by means of single lift, ultra-deep shafts has a critical impact on the life cycle costs and efficiencies of ultra-deep mining complexes. A brief description of the main components of the hoisting system at Moab Khotsong is presented. An in-depth review of the development process applied to ensure a stable, safe and cost-effective rope construction for the ultra-deep Moab Khotsong shaft follows. The paper concludes with an overview of the experiences gained during the installation and commissioning phases of the winder, as well as operational and maintenance issues.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

During induration of iron ore pellets produced from magnetite concentrates, there are many reactions occurring simultaneously. While the magnetite is being oxidised to hematite, carbonate fluxes are being calcined, leading to the formation of complex oxides. Calcination of fluxes and the formation of calcium and magnesium ferrites and silicates during the preheat stage can influence the magnetite oxidation process. As the calcination reaction proceeds quicker than oxidation at temperatures experienced during the preheat stage (700 - 1200¦C), the bulk flow of CO2 emanating from within the pellet should disrupt the diffusion of O2 to the magnetite reaction as the gas fluxes are similar in magnitude. This increases the time required for the oxidation of the pellet. Using an infrared rapid heating furnace, experiments were performed on heating individual magnetite green balls in an air atmosphere. These experiments showed that time played an important role in the extent of oxidation and calcination and temperature significantly influenced the initial evolution of high temperature phases such as magnesioferrite, calcium ferrites and calcium silicates. Understanding the kinetics of all these reactions for a particular pellet feed, and their interaction, is important for optimising the design of the induration furnace.

Two independent sets of observations from rifted con-tinental margins suggest a way to reach a quantitative under-standing of how the topography of rifted margins erodes. First, a prominent erosional escarpment, which demarcates an elevated, inland region of low relief from rugged, deeply-incised terrain on the seaward side, is the main feature of the geomorphology of many rifted continental margins. Second, apatite fission track ages from the southeast Australian and southwest Saudi Arabian margins scatter about constant Paleozoic ages over the higher elevations inland from the escarpment, but decrease systematically seaward of the escarpment to near-rifting ages approaching the coastlines. We have developed erosion models based on conservation of mass principles to explain these observations. These models seek to explain the "rejuvenation" of erosion at the time of rifting, initiation of the observed erosional escarpment, and its migration inland with time at a rate on the order of 1 km/10 yr. We find from the modeling that erosion at rift flanks and passive margins is fundamentally a non-linear pro-cess. The erosional development of passive margin topogra-phy has much is common with travelling wave solutions to non-linear diffusion-type problems, and to self-similar sto-chastic processes, such as diffusion-limited aggregation. We suggest that the fission track data record the thermal effects of erosional unroofing at rift flanks and passive continental margins. Models intended to explain the erosional develop-ment of continental margins must explain both the geomor-phology and the fission track observations as well.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. The Government Mining Engineer of South Africa has decided to legislate that Self Contained Self Rescuers (S.C.S.R.) become a mandatory piece of equipment for all those persons proceeding underground. It is envisaged that: * employees in underground coal mines will be fully equipped with S.C.S.R.s during 1988; * those persons employed in gold mines during 1988/89; and * personnel in all other mines by the end of 1990. It is the intention of this paper to discuss the introduction of these auxiliary life support systems, and to give an update on current market developments.

The results of about 30 years of exploration and mining activities and research studies in the Kambalda mining district, Western Australia, have led to general agreement that the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores formed as a result of igneous processes (Ross, 1974; Ross and Hopkins, 1975; Gresham and Loftus-Hills, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Lesher, 1989 and many others). Despite this agreement, the controls on sulphide supersaturation and concentration of the resulting sulphide in a limited zone, remain uncertain and controversial. A major uncertainty is the source of sulphur in the ore deposits. Two principal sulphur sources have been proposed: 1. komatiite lava/magma (Hudson, 1972; Naldrett, 1973; Lesher et al, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Foster et at, 1995), and 2. sedimentary material (Groves, Barrett and McQueen, 1979; Lesher, Arndt and Groves, 1984; Lesher, 1989; Lesher and Campbell, 1993). Resolution of the uncertainty regarding the sulphur source is required for a complete understanding of the controls on ore formation, which in turn would significantly impact exploration strategies in the Kambalda mining district and elsewhere. This paper reviews the constraints on sulphur sources for the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores in the Kambalda mining district. The focus is on the general characteristics of the ores and surrounding rocks: individual ore deposits are not described, though specific examples are noted where appropriate. The stratigraphic and volcanic settings and geochemical (major and trace element and isotopic compositions) characteristics of the ore deposits and surrounding rocks are considered within the context of the competing sulphur source models, and future directions of research in the district are noted.

The calibrated thermal IR data of part of Cambay Basin is used to determine surface temperatures and to detect the heat flow. Applying the conductive heat flow continuation technique, the three dimensional configuration of the hydrocarbon bearing reservoir was defined. The zone delineated by the present study coincides with the oil-bearing structures inferred by seismic survey. The results indicate the possibility of the technique as an effective tool in hydrocarbon exploration.

LOCATIONThe property of the Mount Isa Mines Ltd. is situated in Western Queensland, 603 miles by rail west of Townsville, the nearest seaport. All supplies and the bullion are railed between Mt. Isa and Townsville. The climate is semiarid, and operations are conducted throughout the year without difficulty.WATER SUPPLYThe mill make-up water is obtained from the mine, and also from Rifle Creek reservoir, which is situated 20 miles from Mount Isa. The domestic supply of water is obtained from a series of bores on the company's leases.POWER SUPPLYElectric power at 3300 volts, 3-phase, 50 cycles, is supplied from the company's steam power plant, consisting of two units, each unit comprising one Babcock & Wilcox boiler, supplying steam at 300 lb. pressure per sq: in. to one 5000 kW. turbo-alternator. Pulverized coal is used as fuel, and power is being generated at a cost of 0.45d. per kilowatt hour. The coal used is supplied from the State Coal Mine, Bowen, costing 42/- per ton delivered at Mt. Isa.

The use of a 35mm non-metric SLR camera and an analytical plotter to prepare close range photogrammetric (CRP) plans of a quarry and open pit mine face is described. The plans, at scales ranging from 1:5 -1:1 000, were used to measure the orientation of geological structures and failure surfaces in the exposed faces.Details are provided on the equipment used and the field techniques. The method:ò is quick and relatively cheap to perform,ò allows the accurate orientation of specific geological features to be determined,ò provides survey results of suitable accuracy that may be used for detailed geotechnical analyses of pit wall failures,ò shows great potential as a rapid and accurate technique for monitoring changes in pit wall profiles with time.
