FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

The KSS Lead Plant (Kivcet - SNAMPROGETTI - SAMIM) of Por tovesme, owned by Nuova Samim (the sector-head Company for non ferrous metals and derivatives owned by ENI), has been operating since february 1987. This plant is based on the Soviet Kivcet licence and testwork carried out on the pilot plant of VNIITSVETMET in Ust Kameno gorsk fed by the Nuova Samim's concentrates. The plant is com pletely automatized using the most advanced technologies and it is operated by nineteen people on shift work, including all ancillary units and lead decopperizing-casting. The expected performance of the plant has been confirmed and improves day by day in relation of the operating experience, thanks to the new conceptual design of the furnace. Due to the remarkable flexi bility of the process, the integration of the lead plant with the other plants of the metallurgical complex of Portovesme rro-#4 (Electrolytic Zinc Plant, Sulphuric Acid Plant, Imperial Smel ting) has shown all the economic advantages. The lead content in the ambient air, detected by the monitors, either in the working area and on the ground outside the complex, is widely Pb W" below the stricter new limits recommanded by the E.E.C. (Economic European Community) rules and by the Italian law. The whole process is carried out in equipment completely closed and under suction and it does not require manual operations with exposure to the lead. The production cost is much lower than that performed by the traditional technology. This advantage permits wide margin to consider investment to replace the traditional technology.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

As mobile equipment electrification in underground mining continues to gain popularity, control ofheat and humidity in the workplace is becoming a key driver in sizing of ventilation and mine aircooling systems. For design and sizing of ventilation and cooling systems to be accurate, and for themine mobile equipment fleet to be sized appropriately to meet production goals, vehicle productivitymetrics, heat modelling, and energy balances for electrified fleets need to consider operation througha realistic duty cycle that is reflective of various tasks performed during a shift.The authors conducted a real-world comparison of two 8 cubic yard (14 metric tonne) class Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines – one diesel and one battery-electric vehicle (BEV) – performingidentical muck-haul-dump operations on consecutive days at an underground nickel/copper hardrock mine in Ontario, Canada.The battery-electric LHD averaged 8.9 per cent faster cycle time than the diesel vehicle (gross,without accounting for charging time), and was able to transport 25 per cent more material per cycledue to a larger bucket capacity. When including the charging time, average net cycle times wereequivalent for the two vehicles over the 200 cycles. The BEV carried more payload over the eighthour period due to the increased capacity per cycle.The testing identified an approximately five-fold reduction in heat output from the BEV in comparisonto the diesel LHD on a basis of heat output per tonne of rated bucket capacity. Heat output from thefast charger was found to be approximately 4 per cent of the charging rate, with negligibletemperature change observed in the main drift. External noise levels in the mine were found to be14 dB lower for the BEV during transit and 11 dB lower during bucket loading. Fuel/energy costs forBEV electricity input were approximately four times lower per operating hour than diesel fuel costbased on typical 2021 electrical and diesel unit rates for a grid-connected mine in Ontario, Canada.

Over the years many attempts have been made to develop a means of assessing the excavatability of rock. Most of them are based on an empirical rating system while some authorities still propose the use of seismic velocity as a direct predictor of the rippability of a rock mass. On the other hand there are a number of classical models which have been developed to define the cutting force required at the pick or tooth of continuous miners.While these methods have been applied with various degrees of success to the design of excavation systems there is no generally acceptable method of defining the excavatability or cuttability of a rock mass in terms of the machine power required to generate a particular rate of production.The authors have attempted to overcome this deficiency by recording the intact and rock mass properties at a number of surface mines where continuous miners were in use and to use this data to examine the relationships between the relevant dimensionless groups developed from a dimensional analysis of the problem.The results obtained are encouraging and it appears that this new approach to the problem could lead to civil and mining engineers having a means of predicting the cutting power required to excavate rock at a given rate at any site.While this paper does not include a review of past work it refers to a number of key publications which will give the reader an excellent introduction to the subject.It is important to point out that the research work reported in this paper is part of a doctoral research project at Curtin University of Technology on the Influence of Intact Rock and Rock Mass Properties on the Design of Surface Mines. One of the major objectives of this project is to explore the possibility of developing a technique for predicting the excavatability of rock in surface mines at the design stage.This paper therefore commences with a brief reference to the continuous surface miners in use at the test sites followed by some original work by the authors in applying Dimensional Analysis to analyse the macro-performance of mechanical excavators. Following an analysis of the experimental data the authors validate the wider use of the model by referring to its successful application in predicting the power required to excavate rock by continuous surface miners at other sites.

The Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace (ISF) of the Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited zinc/lead smelter at Cockle Creek, New South wales, has in recent years greatly increased its consumption of low grade feed materials, and as a consequence has experienced periods of unstable furnace operation. Routine examination of production sinter, including softening characteristics and micro- examination, showed that the problems had been caused by an increasing silica content in sinter. The silica entered a low melting point glass phase containing calcium and lead oxides. The relative volume of this phase increased until it formed a continuous matrix in the sinter structure and this made the sinter more likely to soften at lower temperatures. Premature softening caused loss of operating stability in both the shaft and hearth of the ISr. The required sinter structure for ISF smelting was found to consist of a network of intermeshing, refractory crystals which provided skeletal strength for sinter lumps even after the glass phases had begun to soften and melt. With an understanding of the importance of microstructure and softening temperature of zinc/lead sinter and the progressive identification of those factors in sinter production which affect the microstructure, a significant improvement in stability of operations has been possible.

The Myra Falls minesite, of Westmin Resources Limited, is located at the geographic centre of Vancouver Island, within the confines of Strathcona Provincial Park. The operation includes two active underground mines, II-W and Lynx, together with a modem 3650 1/d milling facility. Recent exploration successes will lead to the commissioning of a third mining area in late-1993 - The Battle/Gap Mine. These ore deposits are complexly metal-zoned volcanogenic massive sulphides of Devonian age, hosted in the Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. Three distinct felsic volcanic units are defined within the 450 metre thick Myra Formation. They are, from oldest to youngest, the H-W Horizon, the LMP Horizon and the Upper Rhyolite Unit. Massive sulphide mineralisation occurs throughout the property in the H-W and LMP Horizons. There are a number of orebody types, including polymetallic massive sulphides, polymetallic disseminated sulphides, zoned pyritic massive sulphides, elastic sulphide zones and stringer sulphide zones. Individual orebodies range in size from 10 000 tonne zinc-rich polymetallic lenses to the ten million tonne, zoned massive sulphide H-W main lens. The property has been in continuous operation for 26 years, producing over 13 Mt of ore averaging 2.2 g/t Au, 64.0 g/t Ag, 1.9 per cent Cu, 0.6 per cent Pb, and 5.6 per cent Zn. Current geological reserves stand at 12.5 Mt at a comparable grade, including 4 Mt of recently discovered high grade ore in the Battle and Gap Zones. Mining and milling methods have evolved over time to enable successful extraction and milling of these complex ores. Change is on-going with the recent conversion of the H-W Mine to large-scale bulk mining methods, and the development of effective computerised ore reserve calculation and mine planning tools. These changes, in concert with successful exploration techniques that led to recent high grade ore discoveries, have breathed new life into the operation and should assure its present and future viability.

In 1993 a detailed review of drill sample yuuluy was rouxluard through twin and triplet drill holes using open hole, crossover suhreverse circulation (RC) and diamond drill methods. Advances in face-sampling RC methods demanded a further review of the validity and reproducibility of drill sample data. A program was undertaken to drill three RC holes using the latest technology (new face- sampling bits, dust suppressers, cyclones and compressors). Volumetric and mass studies were undertaken to review sample recoveries. Modal analyses on indicator minerals were logged to interpret the relative degree of mineralisation. Ambiguities in the results were immediately apparent and the consensus was for follow-up twin diamond holes using HQ3 coring tubes. The most mineralised RC hole was selected for the first twin diamond hole. This RC hole (MS 313) encountered one intersection of >0.47 g/t; in contrast the diamond hole (MS 342) had nine intersections at > I g/t. Results at hand show definitively that face-sampling RC drilling is not acceptable as a method of exploration for gold deposits of the Woods Point type. Furthermore it is demonstrated that RC drilling should not be used for any type of exploration of high-grade gold vein deposits related to highly fractured or porous hostrock, or areas of previous mining activity. Methods are proposed for reviewing of rates of sample recovery, distribution and cross-contamination. Comparisons also show that in limited metreage reconnaissance drill programs, diamond drilling is more similar to percussion in per metre costs, than it is credited with, and always provides more bang for the Buck.

An extensive experimental campaign was developed in a continuous 6 x 2' (D x L) pilot scale SAG mill. The effect of the feed flow rate, feed solids concentration, ball filling fraction and feed size distribution, over the mill performance was investigated. The residence time distribution (RTD) for the fine material was measured in every test, in order to detect changes in the mixing characteristics of the mill under different operating conditions. Based on phenomenological considerations a state model of the SAG mill was developed, which independently incorporates mechanisms such as: grinding, mass transport and classification in the grate discharge. These can be parametrised using information and optimisation software. This comminution model extends the compensation condition, which is a conventional hypothesis for ball milling, to the semi-autogenous mill grinding. The mathematical analysis of this hypothesis, applied to SAG mills, allow the reduction of the number of parameters in the model, using the relationship Ki = (1-bii)Si, where b and S have the conventional meaning. Therefore, the distribution fracture matrix bij and the specific fracture rate SIE are grouped in just a single diagonal matrix Ki.

Waste blasting in iron ore operations can pose a number of technical challenges, including blasting through variable geology and blasting soft ground in wet conditions. Blast patterns are designed to be loaded with a specific range of explosives with unique characteristics and properties. Each explosive product will produce an optimal blast outcome for a given set of blast parameters and ground conditions. Sites characterised by softer rock typically require low-density, low-energy explosives. Historically, these products have contained a high ratio of porous ammonium nitrate prill and are only suitable for dry blastholes. When blastholes within a pattern are found to be unsuitable for such explosives due to wet, damp or muddy blasthole conditions, a new product is selected. While it is easy to switch products to match blasthole conditions, the different properties of the new non-ideal product can impact blast performance and increase loading times and costs.Flexigel™ is a solids-sensitised emulsion blend suitable for loading at variable densities and energies in dry, damp, muddy or wet blastholes. It is a universal product that can be loaded to match ground and blasthole conditions or complement other explosive products.At Fortescue Metals Group’s Cloudbreak site, Flexigel™ was trialled through a series of matched pair blasts in order to optimise blast outcomes in conditions that were non-ideal for existing explosive products and to reduce the overall cost of drill and blast operations. Flexigel™ yielded improved instantaneous dig rates and improved loading efficiency when compared to a traditional emulsion blend. The results also indicated that variable-density and variable-energy products afford greater flexibility for optimising blast outcomes across all ground and blasthole conditions trialled.Trials of Flexigel™ at Cloudbreak have shown that a variable-density solution is available for conditions where traditional explosive products are non-ideal. As such, Flexigel™ is able to fill a major void at any operation where the desired low-density, low-energy explosive product must be substituted for a more expensive traditional emulsion blend or heavy ammonium nitrate/fuel oil.CITATION:Andrew, D R, Morrison, K T and Tiedgen, J F, 2015. PT Freeport Indonesia operates a copper-gold mine located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Currently, the district produces about 240 000 tonnes per day (tpd) of which about 45 000 tpd come from the DOZ Block Cave and the rest is mined from the Grasberg Open Pit. Over the next ten years, ore production from large block caves in the area is expected to reach about 200 000 tpd, replacing a large part of the production from the Grasberg Pit. Block cave mining alters the hydrological characteristics of the area being mined and when the cave expresses itself at the surface in the form of subsidence, it increases the entrapment area for surface water. Operating a large block cave mine in a region with an average annual rainfall of 5500 mm in steep mountainous terrain and complex geological and hydrological features presents a challenging scenario for dewatering or depressurisation of the area. The high rainfall infiltration and entrapment in stacked mines operating within an essentially single orebody, coupled with the presence of fine-grained and clayey material within the draw points of the block cave, creates mud rushes or wet muck spills, which can endanger the personnel and interrupt production. This paper outlines the problems caused by high water inflow into the DOZ Block Cave and the efforts undertaken to ensure the safety of the miners and continued achievement of desired production rates from underground mining in the district.

"Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. The value realised to the BHP Coal assets resulting from this process was: improved compliance to plan increased throughput increased CHPP recovery through improved efficiencies and increased revenues.CITATION:Handley, P J, 2017. The proposed Rockwater Power Project is a hydropower development on the Waitaki River in the South Island of New Zealand. The proposed development will have an installed capacity of 250 MW with a peak flow capacity of 260 m3/s. The project commences at Lake Waitaki and extends some 35 km downstream on the north bank to a surface power station at Stonewall. Flow is returned to the Waitaki River via an outfall channel.The tunnelling for the project is through Greywacke, which comprises Permian and Triassic age marine sediments that are well indurated and weakly metamorphosed. The rock mass is jointed and sheared and there are frequent faults, which range up to hundreds of metres in width. Three 12 m diameter tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are proposed to excavate the 35 km long tunnel.The paper describes the development of the tunnel alignment, rock mass classification, design of the support, rock and hydraulic loads, support installation options and construction sequencing.The alternatives of rock bolts and shotcrete and segmental lining were both investigated and are discussed. Support using rock bolts and shotcrete offers the potential of rapid construction with minimum support cost when the ground conditions are good, but delays due to support installation increases with deteriorating ground conditions. In contrast, segmentally lined tunnels offer greater certainty in cycle time with reduced program risk. Both options are described and discussed.The horizontal alignment is affected by the presence of major fault zones, which are either avoided, or pretreated by driving conventional tunnels through in advance of the TBM delivery, topographical constraints with the rugged topography and operational hydraulic constraints. Construction requirements, future power station operation and the minimisation of leakage from the tunnel have all impacted on the vertical alignment.The number and sequencing of TBMs to be used is discussed in terms of program time and risk minimisation.

Spotted Quoll is a massive sulfide nickel deposit located in the Forrestania greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn block in Western Australia. Discovered in October 2007, mining has progressed from open pit to underground and currently uses longhole open stoping with paste fill as the primary stoping method. Immediately prior to 2019, the Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) was defined by a single grade domain of nickel greater than or equal to 0.8 per cent, irrespective of the host lithology, a legacy of the original ore wireframe being built using explicit methods. While a number of obvious structural offsets were honoured in this nickel grade domain, only one modelled fault was used to undertake domaining of arsenic. From 2019 onwards, implicit modelling in Leapfrog Geo™ was used to construct a mine-scale geological model, which triggered the definition of a high-grade core of massive/matrix nickel sulfides surrounded by a low-grade halo of stringer/disseminated nickel sulfides in the surrounding rock. As part of the evolution of the geological model and with the aid of Seequent Central™ to allow collaboration between site-based mine geologists, Perth-based resource geologists and Melbourne-based consultants, a detailed review of the structural mapping was carried out as additional information from underground development became available. This allowed numerous faults and shears to be identified – particularly in the lower half of the mine. These were used to define further structural domains and to refine the understanding of the nickel and arsenic grade distributions in the mineralised envelope. The increased definition to the domains provided by the geological model resulted in a significant improvement in the accuracy of the Mineral Resource estimate, as measured by reconciliation using voids of the mined stopes determined from the cavity monitoring survey (CMS).

The development of Western Australian magnetite deposits has lead to the design of some of the largest grinding mills and plants in the world. One of the projects demonstrates the efficiency gains possible by developing a simple yet thorough test program for circuit design. By drawing on the experience of current magnetite operations in Australia and the Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges in the United States, a basic flowsheet was developed. Through comprehensive testwork with AG, ball and stirred milling the flowsheet was optimized to take full advantage of each grinding mill’s strengths to reach the required final grind size. Laboratory work was verified in the pilot plant to optimize the energy efficiency of each grinding step while ensuring adequate liberation at each step for sufficient gangue rejection. By using three stages of grinding, the ball mill can best be employed in ensuring all top size gangue material is liberated and removed in the second magnetic separation step. The inclusion of the IsaMill, with its inherent steep product size distribution, as the tertiary grinding stage ensured that maximum grade was achieved and simplified the downstream process while giving further improvements in total grinding capital and operating costs. In this way the combination of the two technologies downstream from the AG mill is far more efficient than either would be on its own by reducing the total installed power by 1/3 and annual grinding media cost by 2/3.

The mining industry has focused a great deal of attention recently on the impact of blast movement on grade control. Although the problem of blast movement and its contribution to dilution and ore loss is well known, solutions to the problem are less than satisfactory. Perhaps the most recent innovation is the application of blast movement monitoring (BMM) devices to quantify blast movement. These devices emit an electronic signal and are planted at surveyed locations within the preblast material. Following the blast, their new locations are found using an electronic scanner. The magnitude and direction of the blast movement is given by the vectors between the pre- and post-blast BMM locations. However, it’s not clear how the BMM vector data can be best used to minimise dilution and ore loss. One common solution is to displace preblast dig line polygons by distances indicated by the BMM vectors. However, studies of BMM vectors show that blast movement not only displaces material laterally but also mixes material internally within the bench (Thornton, 2009a).This paper presents a method for modelling the post-blast muck pile that accounts for displacement and internal dilution using simulated annealing. The preblast ore control block model is re-blocked to 1?×?1?×?1?m sub-blocks. Each sub-block is displaced by simulated BMM vectors conditional to post-blast surface topography and blast initiation sequence data in addition to BMM vector data. The displaced sub-blocks are aggregated into new ore control model blocks whose grades are calculated from the contained sub-blocks. New dig lines are then designed on the post-blast muck pile model using the new ore control block model grades. In the metal and mineral industry, different empirical techniques are used to estimate the remaining thickness of the lining within an operating furnace. The disadvantage and costly factor when using these methods is that production needs to be halted. Hatch has developed an accurate and reliable technique based on stress wave propagation principles to determine the condition of the remaining lining whilst the furnace remains online and operational.The technique involves test data collected and compiled to generate 3D imagery used to assist operators and maintenance planning personnel with valuable information showing areas of metal penetration in the lining, remaining lining thickness, exact location of voids, cracks, poor contacts and deterioration due to chemical attack. In this paper, the principals of the AU-E technique will be explained both theoretically and practically. In addition, the use of ultrasound technology for determining the condition of copper cooling elements will be briefly addressed.

The case study is based on the largest ore deposit at Mt. Lyell; the Prince Lyell deposit, comprising a regular lensoid mass of dissemina- ted and vein pyrite-chalcopyrite mineralisation. Reserve estimation employs conventional techniques, based on diamond drill hole and relevant development sampling data. Probable ore reserves are estimated using the contouring (isoline) method an longitudinal projections for ore thickness and accumulation (m %Cu) at a '0.8% Cu' cutoff. Final stope and pillar res- erve estimates (proved ore) are derived from designed ring tonnages and contoured accumula- tion for individual mining units, following more intensive sampling. Systematic grade control procedures have been adopted and individual stopes and pillars reconciled against mill production. The proved ore estimates have been found to com- pare favourably with the reconciled production.

Optimal drill and blast design is a process often neglected by many underground hard rock mines. This is even more important to the new mine where ring designs need to be implemented and refined in a short period of time. In today's environment where more and more mining is being carried out by contract specialists it is the co-operation between a principal and contractor, who are working towards a common goal, that achieves the highest quality end result. The development of drill and blast designs that cause minimal damage to the mine infrastructure is particularly important to Northparke's E26 Block Cave Mine, as it consists of a single extraction level which must survive intact for the life of the mine. The advanced undercut mining method implemented at Northparkes is fired in a sequence which protects the mine development from potentially damaging abutment stress. This paper details how blast designs will be optimised and sequenced to satisfy the conflicting objectives of maximum rock breakage inside the drill pattern and minimum rock damage outside the pattern.

The binary indicator coding of assay and lithological data according to a single criterion or multiple criteria is a powerful technique for representing mineralised shapes through the modelling of probabilities. This can be as simple as using a single indicator to model the probability of occurrence of a condition, usually a grade threshold or a lithology, but it can also be used with a number of categories. Case studies are presented to show the power of this approach, where the geological controls on mineralisation or on the distribution of a rocktype or alteration, often coupled with mineralisation, are unclear. The categorical approach is often used as a de facto grade filter in disseminated or stockwork mineralisation. The ultimate expression of the indicator formalism is in multiple indicator kriging (MIK), where a conditional distribution of probabilities is generated for each estimation panel. This has applications in recoverable resource estimation, as the input for continuous or categorical simulation, where the distribution of sample grades is multimodal, or when there are superimposed mineralisation events with different orientations. However, in some cases, MIK is being used as an excuse for ignoring a quality geological interpretation. Examples from the public domain show the abuse of the categorical and MIK approaches to modelling probabilities, together with a plea for greater consideration of the geology.
