Probably no one has had occasion to examine an undeveloped coal property without hearing some hopeful or interested party insist that the bed will improve when opened some distance under cover. When the bed is already in good condition, the opinion is usually advanced that the same character may be expected, at least to the bounds of the hopeful individual's holdings. My attention has been called in this way to the extent to which a bed is affected by its outcrop at the surface ; and having had opportunity to examine a number of openings immediately at the surface, and also a short distance under cover, I submit some observations bearing on this question. Whatever may have been the original variations, we may assume that coal-basins presented in comparatively modern times approximately parallel beds interstratified with fire-clay, slate, sandstone, etc., as represented by Fig. 1. Under the effect of erosion, Fig. 2 would be formed. It is obvious that along the line A, B, C, in Fig. 1, the beds exist under conditions differing from those at A', B', C', or again at A", B", C", in Fig. 2, in their exposures to atmospheric agencies, pressure and erosion. The effect of the first is to decompose and soften many of the strata; of the second, when presented unequally, to cause the movement of such material as was at all plastic towards the point of least pressure ; and of the third, to remove the strata in whole or in part. THE iron-ore deposits of Russia were estimated at 2,200,000,000 by the Russian Geological Survey, in 1910; but this estimate must be considered as being far too low. The estimate for Siberia, which had been explored very little for iron ore, was placed at about 27,000,000 tons. The exploration, in 1912-14, of the three iron deposits-Blagodat, Baakal and Kamensk-raised the estimate of the iron-ore reserves or the Urals from 282,000,000 tons to about 400,000,000 tons. Conservative estimates of the explored deposits made by the writer in 1915, gave the following figures: Southern Russia 900,000,000 tons, Ural Mountains 500,000,000 tons, Central Russia 900,000,- 000 tons, Siberia 100,000,000 tons, Caucasus 20,000,000 tons, or a total of 2,420,000,000 tons of iron ore, or 1,200,000,000 tons of pig iron.

A simplified mathematical model of underground conduction heating in a system of limited permeability is presented. The model applies to underground retorting of oil shale, or to reservoirs containing extremely heavy oils. We assume that heat is introduced at a constant rate into a horizontal fracture which communicates between wells. The radial temperature distribution along the fractured surface is approximated by a step-function. Heat transfer away from the fracture is assumed to be by vertical conduction, and all convection effects are neglected. The model also takes into account the possible temperature dependence of thermal conductivity. A general expression for calculating the growth of the step-function temperature distribution with time is derived. The use of this expression and solutions to the one-dimensional heat equation make it possible to construct isotherms. Expressions for calculating .oil recovery, well spacing and heat efficiency are also given. An example calculation is presented for the conduction heating process in oil shale. Finally, the effect of the heat transfer coefficient between the gas and the fracture boundaries is investigated. INTRODUCTION Thermal recovery processes of oil recovery fall into the four general areas of hot fluid injection, forward combustion, reverse combustion and conduction heating. The first three of* these processes have been rather extensively studied in the past decade from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. As a result, it is possible to make reasonable engineering predictions and analyses of these processes. Little attention has been devoted, however, to the conduction heating process other than to note its possible utility.I To a certain extent, conduction heating cannot be divorced from the other regimes cited above, insofar as these provide the source of heat energy. In the conduction heating process, heat is introduced (either by combustion in the forward or reverse mode or by hot fluid injection) into a small fraction of the total reservoir thickness. This fraction may be either a streak of high permeability or an interwell fracture. Heat penetrates by conduction into the adjacent, less permeable regions of the oil-bearing rock, where the direction of conduction is essentially perpendicular to the streak or fracture. The heated product then drains by gravity or is gas driven to production wells. Conduction heating is probably most applicable to systems containing immobile bitumens such as tar sands and oil shale deposits and perhaps to low-permeability reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. The mechanism also acts in combination with other thermal processes where fingering or overriding of a bed occurs. It seems probable that in at least one field test, conduction heating of this type was very influential.2 In this presentation we give a first approximation to some of the quantitative aspects of conduction heating. Marx and Langenheim3 treated a similar problem where they focused attention upon the injection interval, which spanned the total reservoir thickness. In their model, conduction heat losses to the bounding media imposed a practical limit on the calculated heated area. In the present study, however, we shall confine the injection interval to a small fraction of the reservoir thickness and assume it has no heat capacity. We therefore direct our attention to regions outside the injection interval into which the conduction of heat is beneficial. In particular, we will endeavor to locate specific isotherms in the media bounding the injection interval. Furthermore, we will construct our model to allow the thermal conductivity to vary arbitrarily with temperature. Thus the model will be applicable to underground retorting of shale where variations in thermal conductivity may be important. SOME eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur were naturally in the lime-kiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way as common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known fact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature. This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseous fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced – 1st. That gaseous fuel only would accomplish the work successfully. 2d. That since a high temperature was required to insure a rapid oxidation of the sulphur, and also to make the ore open and porous,

The engineering personnel shortage, present and impending, so well brought out in the article in Mining Engineering in the August, 1951 number, both in the editorial lead and the article by William B. Plank and Henry J. Petrie, has left untapped and has ignored a potential source of supply that would fill the need ably and with complete satisfaction. This source is comprised of the women engineers- and geologists, both presently, trained and able to handle work at all levels, and the many who would make splendid engineers and geologists if they could hope for even a modest taste of the square deal that should be theirs, but, as we all know, is not. I write from experience. It is not pleasant or sensible to have to urge borderline cases among men students to consider engineering and geology as careers to fill the need, when I have far more able, interested and suited young women students whom I must divert into other channels. It does not make sense to scrape the bottom and sides of the barrel to induce potentially second or third rate male engineers and geologists to enter the profession when we have superior material among the women, eager to do good work in these fields. It does not make sense for these men to become second or third rate in these fields when they might be first rate salesmen, musicians, advertising copywriters or policemen. Nor does it make any more sense to force potentially first rate female geologists and engineers to become second or third rate and very frustrated typists, kindergarten teachers, dress sales-women or clerks. At this point I am willing to admit that where superstitious -miners object to women in underground workings, men are available for the jobs. Moreover, it is not necessary for women to be sent into the most difficult country, if there is reluctance on either side of the contract. There may be fewer of them eager for the roughest assignments, in proportion to the men, but women are so accustomed to discrimination far more complete than that against any racial or religious group, that a reasonably tough assignment would seem like a heaven-descended joy. In my own experience, I have found that my girl students majoring in geology, could keep up with me in the field in the roughest terrain, but. the men, all but the best students and the most physically fit young men, complained that they could not keep up with me and that I always "walked their-legs off. The women, a few men and I always returned with bags heavy with well chosen specimens and proper notes. Most of the men carried no specimens and-but poor scraps of notes on loose bits of paper. Yet the men were urged to prepare for a career in engineering or geology if their examination marks were reasonably good. When we find that we still have a shortage of engineers and geologists, after putting all the qualified women to work, then we may begin to worry. Uranium was cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 90 pct and the preferred orientation of the grains was determined from X-ray intensity data. Complete pole figures for a large number of atom planes were plotted, and the preferred orientation was found to be duplex (102) [0101 + (012) [021]. These preferred orientations are compared with those reported for many of the hexagonal-close-packed metals. THE preferred orientation of a highly reduced cold-rolled uranium strip was determined in order to obtain additional experimental data which would be useful in further understanding the deformation mechanisms of uranium. The preferred orientations reported herein are not in agreement with those theoretically predicted by Calnan and Clews' for cold-rolled uranium sheets, and differ somewhat from those reported from experiments by Fisher, and Burke and Turkalo. Such variations might be accounted for by differences in the fabrication temperature and the reductions. Experimental Procedure The uranium used in this investigation had been hot rolled to 0.060 in. at 575°C from 0.393 in., and from a 0.060 to 0.020 in. thick sheet at 275°C. From this point the sheet was cold reduced 90 pct to 0.002 in. at room temperature. Three specimens were used to obtain complete pole-figure data. The first was a 1/2 in. square section illuminated by the X-ray beam on the rolling surface. The other two were l/2 in. square longitudinal and transverse sections each made as follows: Approximately 200 1/2 in. square sections of the foil were piled one on top of the other, so that the rolling direction for each piece was kept coincident. A 1/2 in. square by 1/8 in. thick steel section was placed on the top and bottom of a pile and the entire assembly was then bolted tightly together through a 1/8 in. diam hole drilled down through the center. Each pile was then surface-ground from the two proper sides to sections 1/2 in. square by 3/16 in. thick. These specimens were then polished flat and electro-polished to remove 0.005 in. of the surfaces to be examined. It can be shown that uranium is so opaque to a Cu Ka X-ray beam that only a small percentage would be transmitted by one micron of uranium. Therefore, a method of measuring the X-ray intensities diffracted from specimen surfaces was used. The specimens were mounted in a modified Schulz reflection holder' which automatically changed the position of the specimen at a constant rate. The holder, in turn, was mounted on a General Electric XRD-3 Spectro-Goniometer and an automatic record made of the diffracted X-ray intensity vs specimen position. While a specimen moved automatically through 10" inclination, at a rate of l° per min, it simultaneously rotated 360" about a normal to the illuminated surface. (The inclination and rotation angles are referred to as F and a, respectively.) The data were then plotted along the resulting spiral path on a stereographic projection, Fig. 1. The ideal fuel for burning ceramic wares is the one that, among other characteristics, has little or no sulfur. For that reason wood was long considered the most desirable fuel but its high cost has practically eliminated its use except in regions where it is very abundant or other circumstances warrant its choice. The fuels commonly employed are natural and producer gas, oil, and coal. The last named is undoubtedly the most important, not only in this country but abroad. Occasionally anthracite is used but the larger part is bituminous. The quality of the coal used depends on the kind and the value of the products being manufactured. For some materials, such as common brick, hollow block, etc., the quality of the coal is of less importance than in the manufacture of polychrome terra cotta, pottery, porcelain, etc. It is obvious that in burning clays that contain notable amounts of pyrite, marcasite or gypsum, as is the case with many common clays, the sulfur content of the fuel is of much less importance. The permissible amount of sulfur in the coal used will depend on the kind of product being manufactured. "A good sample1 of coal commonly used in pottery ovens has something like this quantity of sulfur: total sulfur, 1.20 per cent.; sulfur in ash, 0.11 per cent.; volatile sulfur, 1.09 per cent." This is based on English pottery practice. Correspondence with a. number of leading manufacturers in this country has produced the following figures: Sanitary Ware.—(a) 1.0 per cent, maximum, (b) 0.5 per cent. Sewer Pipe.—(a) 1.2 per cent., (b) 1.1 per cent, present run, 3.0 per cent, has been used. Terra Cotta.—(a) 0.5 per cent, basis of contract, 1.0 per cent, approximate. Pottery.—1.0 per cent, contract, 1.5 per cent, probable content. Enameled Brick.—1.3 per cent, maximum, (a) and (6) designate different firms giving figures. LIME is the alkali that is almost universally added to the solutions in the cyanide process of gold- and silver-extraction for maintaining the so-called, protective" alkalinity. It is produced by the burning of limestone. The value of lime for this purpose depends upon the percentage of calcium oxide contained, which is determined by three factors : 1, purity of the limestone used; 2, degree of the burning-temperature and the period of burning; and 3, length of time of storage of burned material and the condition stored, and whether it has been damp or wet during the storage. These three factors render uncertain the quality of lime bought in the open market. In the United States, lime bought from reliable manufacturers, who thoroughly burn a pure limestone and deliver at once to the consumer from the kilns, may be of a fairly-high and uniform composition ; but in Mexico and Central America, where it is purchased from many small producers, who often start with a poor grade of limestone and burn it in small crude kilns with as little fuel as possible, the quality of the product is quite variable. In consideration of the foregoing, it is apparent at once that there is a great need for a rapid technical method for the valuation of the lime to be used in a cyanide-plant. The determination of calcium by the gravimetric method, with the necessity of determining also the proportion of carbon dioxide, silica, and iron, requires too much time, and is usually out of the question for an isolated plant unequipped with a skilled chemist and, the necessary apparatus. The calculating of all the calcium so found to calcium oxide, although sometimes done, is manifestly very inaccurate.

The shapes and positions of X-ray reflections from specimens of copper, steel, and aluminum alloy haue been examined in the elastic and plastic ranges both while the specimen was under stress and in the unloaded condition. For the aluminum alloy the shape was unaltered by the application of stress either within the elastic limit or in the plastic range provided that no additional plastic strain was induced. In copper the broadening accompanying plastic deformation was very slightly reduced when the specimen was unloaded. A similay but more marked elastic component of broadening was also found for steel, but in this case below the yield stress. Line profiles corrected for instrumental and particle-size broadening indicate very large internal stresses in local regions of the plastically deformed metals. The results are discussed in terms of a recent suggestion that the heterogeneous dislocation distribution between the cells and their boundary walls plays a major role in the peak shifts and broadening of the X-ray reflections. STUDIES of the X-ray line profiles from strained polycrystalline aggregates concentrate usually on one or the other of two main parameters: a) the displacement of the peak of the intensity contour from its position for a strain-free aggregate, or b) the shape of the profile. From peak shifts data can be obtained either on the relation in both the elastic and plastic ranges between applied external stress and average lattice strains in a given (hkl) direction, or, alternatively, on the residual lattice strains which are present after a plastically deformed specimen is unloaded.' On the other hand, the shapes of the broadened profiles from cold-worked metals can be analyzed to separate the broadening produced by small particle size and by heterogeneous lattice strains.' In this paper the terms "size broadening" and "strain broadening'' are used in the general sense adopted by warren.' In the past, apart from two early qualitative observation, it has been customary to examine only the movements of the peaks of the profiles while the specimen is actually under load, since the line broadening induced by plastic strain remains after removal of the external stress. Consideration of the implications of existing data of this type suggests, however, that fruitful additional information on a number of fundamental aspects might be gained by careful examination of whether the X-ray line profile is in fact different in the loaded and unloaded states of the specimen. By taking advantage of the sensitivity and convenience of modern diffractometer techniques it is possible to explore with relative ease the magnitude and importance of any elastic effects which may be superimposed upon the well-known permanent changes in profile. The main aim of the work to be described was thus to investigate this point for typical metals and alloys. For this purpose annealed specimens were extended first elastically and then plastically and the positions and shapes of X-ray reflections were recorded. Initially it was anticipated that prime interest would center on observations within the plastic range; it has been found, however, that small changes in profile sometimes occur both before and after the nominal elastic limit of the material is reached. It is shown that the results obtained have important implications in relation to the structural changes and processes associated with deformation. I) EXPERIMENTAL To enable the diffraction lines to be recorded while the specimen was under uniaxial-tensile stress, a small hydraulic testing machine was designed and constructed for direct attachment to the goniometer of a Philips diffractometer. The specimens, which were machined from 1/2-in.-diam rod and had a central rectangular section 3/8 by 1/16 in. over a gage length of 1 in., were held in the machine by split collets mounted in grooves in the cylindrical ends of each specimen. No special precautions were taken to ensure precise axiality of loading. Constant oil pressure was maintained by a lever and weights system and transmitted to the loading rig by flexible pipe. The actual load on the specimen was measured by a load cell in the machine to an accuracy of * 1 pct. To enable smooth X-ray profiles to be obtained the specimen and machine were oscillated continuously during recording through *7-1/2 deg about the normal half-angle position of the goniometer. The three materials chosen for the investigations were high-purity copper as representative of a ductile fcc metal, a low-carbon steel for a bcc metal, and an aluminum alloy as a material in which the proof stress/ultimate strength ratio is high. THE Great or Cumberland Valley, which (under a variety of names) extends from Canada, through Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and East Tennessee, to Alabama, is composed in part of limestones lying immediately above the Potsdam sandstone. Geologically, they belong to the era between the Potsdam and Trenton, and are commonly termed Calciferous. A peculiarity of these limestones is their great richness in limonite or brown hematite ores, which form a large part of the charges of the many blast-furnaces situated on their outcrops. The mines from which the ores are obtained are (properly speaking) only pits or quarries, from which the ore is extracted by means of picks or shovels, powder being rarely employed. The ore does not occur casually at any point in the limestone, but forms regular lines, following apparently the 'outcrops of certain beds. In Lehigh County, Penn., where I have been engaged on the Geological Survey of' the State, during the past season, there are three or four of these lines. During the progress of the survey I was much struck by the fact that the two most important and promising lines of outcrop were, one at the base of the crystalline schists (forming the South or Lehigh Mountain), and overlying the Potsdam sandstone conformably; the other, near the line of junction of the calciferous limestone with the slates of the Cincinnati epoch. The mines along these two lines, following the topography of the country, were in place, richer and more permanent than those of the belts between, which were generally leaner. A peculiarity of these two lines of outcrop, and one to which I particularly desire to draw attention, is the occurrence of what I at first mistook for a highly altered slaty limestone, but which subsequent analysis proved to consist in great part of damourite (hydrated potash mica). An exploratory study wap made to examine the possibilities of a visual approach in investigations into microscopic mechanisms of fluid behavior in porous media. Appropriate apparatus and techniques were developed so that microscopic phenomena could be recorded on color movie film as well as be observed visually. The observation flow cells in which tlie fluid behavior studies were made were essentially single-layered matrices of spheres between plates. sometimes all-glass, sometimes all-Lucite and sometimes a combination of the two. The fluids were limited to water and a filtered crude oil. Two flow regimes were observed during the flow of the immiscible liquids: channel flow and slug flow. In the former, transport was effected through stable networks of interconnecting channels; and in the latter, part of the movement took place in the form of slugs. Under certain conditions, flood-front patterns were found to be different depending upon which liquids were the displacing and displaced phases and not depending upon whether the matrix was water-wet glass or oil-wet Lucite. Residual formations of oil and water were observed and are described. Some of the ramifications and significance of the ohservetl phenomena are discussed. INTRODUCTION In recent years considerations of microscopic mechanisms of fluid flow in porous media have taken on greater significance. Much needs to be learned before the fundamentals of petroleum technology are completely established. For example, many unanswered questions exist in connection with relative permeability, displacement phenomena, residua! fluid formations. flow structure, etc.; and further analytical mathematical formulations are seriously indicated. It is hoped that systematic investigations into the microscopic mechanisms connected with the behavior of fluids in porous media will shed some light on some of the problems extant. Until recently microscopic mechanisms have been considered almost exclusively as speculative hypotheses. Within the past few years, however, the problem has been submitted to a limited number of experimental investigations. Nuss and Whiting' made some studies on the pore-space geometry of sandstones and limestones by impregnating cores with an inert plastic and leaching the solid matrices to leave behind plastic models of the pore spaces. SchaeferZ traced pore spaces microscopically through lengths of limestone cores by cutting away thin sections from the exposed faces normal to the line of view. In 1949 two projects were organized in which dynamic flow phenomena were examined microscopically to uncover microscopic mechanisms. One was set up at the Pennsylvania State College where Lowmanb bserved heterogeneous fluid flow phenomena in capillaries. The second was the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 47B at the University of Oklahoma where microscopic studies of dynamic fluid phenomena in synthetic porous matrices have been made by visual observation and cinephotomicrography.' It is with the latter that this paper is concerned. treating the techniques involved and the observations made. TECHNIQUES Observation Flow Cells The observation flow cells formed a focal point in the techniques employed. THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

With the Report of Mining Statistics, for the year 1872, there was published a geological map of the United States and Territories. This is, I believe, the only map which represents the geology of Arizona, and is, as far as my observations go, correct. It is, however, on so small a scale as to be of little practical value to the miner. I know of no other maps, even of localities, of this Territory. The topographical maps are also on so small a scale as not even to serve as guides from place to place; the largest, that of Eckhoff and Ricker, being only 30 by 30 inches to represent a territory of 135,000 square miles. For these reasons, it makes it exceedingly difficult to describe the various mining centres in an intelligent manner, and equally so to examine such a hilly country as it is intended to describe in this paper. When I first came into this Territory I soon realized the troubles I had to encounter in trying to form an opinion, or even to get the needed information on the geological contour. I have, therefore, labored as best I could to get a topographical diagram of the section of country represented by the map which accompanies this paper.* The lines run by the Land Department up the valleys of the Aqua Frio, and those west of the Hassayampa, and connected east and west to the north of Prescott, enabled me to inclose correctly the space covered by the Bradshaw and Sierra Prieta mountain groups, but the territory covered by these mountains, and the most difficult part, I have had to fill up as best I could. I have met with such success as to meet the approbation of those most familiar with the country, and, with the map in hand, any one would he able to cross it in any direction. As there has not been a single line of survey made across it, this has been no small undertaking, and I have had to depend upon sights from prominent points with the pocket-compass, or, in the absence of that, to make observations, with watch in hand, and guess as near as possible the meridian direction. A practical analytical method is developed in this paper which provides the practicing reservoir engineer with a handy method for analyzing oilfield interference problems. The procedure employed entails the principle of superposition of individual eflects. A set of charts has been developed and can be used to evaluate the individual effects. The charts represent non-steady state pressure distribution in an extensive aquifer due to a constant rate of production from an oilfield which can be approximated by circular geometry; they are constructed from solutions to the diffusivity equation considering a circular sink as distinguished from a point sink. The solutions are obtained partially from mathenlatical considerations and partially from analog and digital computations. By virtue of the method of images, the charts can be used also to treat the case of production near a fault. In addition, provisions are made for treating oil fields, which are produced by partial water-drive. Treating an actual field case is deferred to a subyequent writing; however, illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the method of application. The pressure distribution in linear and limited radial aquifers is currently under study. INTRODUCTION With the increasing difficulty of discovering new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development and production of existing reservoirs. Efficient production depends on the availability of reliable means for predicting the pressure-production behavior of oil fields. The prediction is usually performed by analytical methods or computers. Analytical methods are often limited to systems which can be approximated by simple geometry. However, analytical methods have the distinct advantage of being readily performed without special equipment. Analog and digital computers lend themselves to a variety of problems, but are not always locally available and consequently their use is limited. One particular situation in which analytical techniques are needed involves studies of multiple, water-drive oil fields sharing a common aquifer. Such oil fields are in hydrodynamic communication. Therefore, production from any of the oil fields is accompanied by a pressure decline which is transmitted through the aquifer to the other oil fields and manifested as pressure interference. The rate of propagation of the pressure decline is such that the pressure may be significantly reduced many miles away from a producing pool. An example of pressure interference is found in the Woodbine formation in East Texas. There. a dozen or more pools, including several of major size, draw on the Woodbine formation for water drive. The pressure in the water-bearing portion of the formation has been significantly reduced over an area of several thousand square miles. This reduction of pressure has been such that when the Hawkins pool was discovered in 1940, the pressure in it had already been reduced 280 psi below the initial value in the aquifer. This resulted from prior production from other Woodbine sand pools, including, in particular, the East Texas field some 20 miles to the east of Hawkins.' The phase equilibria of the Hg-Th system over the composition range 0-100 pct Th and temperatures up to 1000°C have been studied for a small-volume, closed system. The solubility of Th in liquid Hg is about 5 pct at 300°C and decreases sharply with decreasing temperature. Two intermediate phases occur, Hg3 Th and HgTh. The structures of these are hexagonal (nonideally close-packed) and face-centered cubic, respectively. The HgTh phase decomposes eutectoidally at 400°-500°C. The solubility of Hg in solid thorium seems to be negligible. AFULL-phase diagram for this system would have to be defined on temperature-composition-pressure co-ordinates. This paper describes the pseudo phase diagram of a closed system, that is, where the alloy enclosed in a small volume equilibrates with a vapor pressure of mercury dictated by composition and temperature. Because of the experimental difficulties in studying a system of this nature, many of the phase relations can only be sketched. Alloy Preparation Alloys over the full range of composition were made from triple distilled mercury and one of two grades of thorium. For the bulk of the work, a calcium-reduced metal in sintered pellet form of reported 99+ pct total thorium content was used. Arc-melted specimens of this thorium gave a hardness of 135 VPN. The microstructure showed small primary dendrites of ThO2. A number of alloy compositions were made with a high-purity, iodide-decomposition thorium metal. The are-melted hardness of a button of this material was 35 VPN. Although the microstructure of the arc-melted specimens showed no dendrites of ThO2, there was definite evidence of an unidentified phase enveloping the grain bound-aries. There were no distinguishable differences between the constitution of alloys made with the two grades of thorium metal. Under normal conditions thorium is not wetted by liquid mercury. The film of ThO2 on all thorium metal cannot be penetrated by either liquid or vaporous mercury. It was therefore necessary to comminute thorium in the presence of mercury under such conditions that oxide films could not reform on the newly exposed metal surfaces. This was accomplished by the use of a high-speed, carbide-tipped rotary cutter incorporated in a chamber purged with argon and connected at the bottom to a demountable Vycor bulb containing a weighed amount of mercury. This experimental device is fully described in a separate paper.1 Alloy compositions were calculated by weighing the empty bulb, the bulb containing the mercury, and the bulb containing the mercury and the thorium chips. Many alloys were analyzed chemically for thorium and/or mercury after subsequent homogenization; the agreement between analyzed and calculated compositions was invariably very close. Bulbs containing the requisite amounts of mercury and fine thorium chips were clamped off, removed to a sealing unit, evacuated and sealed. Amalgamation under these conditions proceeded rapidly even at room temperature. To insure homogeneity, the specimens were annealed to 300-400°C. Alloys containing less than 30 pct Th remained pasty after all treatments, indicating an equilibrium condition of liquid plus solid. Alloys with more than 30 pct Th were transformed into a dark powdery product. These latter specimens were annealed for times of up to 1 week to complete interdiffusion. Many of the alloy compositions are pyrophoric. On exposure to air they oxidize with considerable evolution of heat to a mixture of ThO2 and free mercury. It was mandatory that alloy specimens be handled in a "dry box" purged thoroughly with argon. All X-ray diffraction specimens were powdered, screened, and sealed in capillary tubes within the dry box. Experimental Procedures Thermal analysis experiments, useful only in the mercury-rich region of the system, were conducted with the alloys in their original containers. A reentrant thermocouple well formed an integral part of the bulb. These bulbs were heated in a silicone oil bath and cooled in a dry ice-acetone mixture. The rates of heating and cooling were slowed by immersing the specimen bulb in a larger tube containing silicone oil. This provided a suitable thermal lag. In all tests, pure mercury was run as a basic standard. While the invariant reaction at about the melting point of mercury was detected by thermal analysis, the heat effect at the liquidus was not sufficient to produce an inflection in the cooling curve. It was necessary to determine the liquidus temperatures at the mercury-rich end of the system by "breaks" in electrical reslstivity versus temperature curves for individual alloys. (written discussion *).-Ad-vantage will be taken of this occasion to mention briefly a form of double potentiometer which has been used at the Bureau of Standards for about 2 1/2 yr. in calibrating thermocouples. The calibrations referred to are those made by comparison to standard couples. In order to insure equality of temperature between the couples, the junctions are fused together; consideration of fundamental principles will show that this introduces no error. Two separate potentiometers are used, one connected to each thermocouple, and each potentiometer is provided with a reflecting galvanometer. The two spots of light are reflected on to a single scale, the galvanometers being set in such a position that the spots coincide on the scale at a point marked zero when the circuits are open or when the potentiometers are balanced. By setting one potentiometer to a desired value and adjusting the other so that both spots pass across the scale together as the temperature rises or falls, simultaneous readings are obtained. By making observations first with a rising temperature and then with a falling temperature, the rates of rise and fall being approximately equal, and taking the means of the results found, several minor errors such as those clue to differences in the time lags of the two systems, etc., are eliminated or greatly reduced. PERHAPS of all the scientific economic questions which have been claiming the attention of capitalists, metallurgists, manu-facturers, directors of public utilities, and the general public of America, during the last few years, none have been of more importance than the one relating to the wear and safety of steel rails. The discovery of the Bessemer process made possible modern railway development. In that growth, as has generally happened in all progressive movements, ill its department have not remained equally balanced. Iron rails permitted the construction of roadways for the passage of power-driven vehicles. In time the speed and weight of such carriages proved too much for the wearing-qualities of the rails, and the limit of railway capacity seemed to have been reached. Bessemer made his invention, which was soon perfected and developed, especially as related to steel rails, and thereby increased the limit of capacity, acid vastly greater railway progress was, made possible. The Siemens-Martin open-hearth process followed, and was later supplemented by the Thomas-Gilchrist basic improvement. For a time the Bessemer steel rails of commerce Were, more than equal to all that was asked of them, but this did not long continue, as evidenced by the records in our Transactions. Revolutionary changes occurred in the industrial world, and in no part of it more than in steel-rail manufacture. Great and powerful commercial combinations were made, whose financial resources made possible the supplanting of the then most efficient blast-furnaces, steel-works, mid mills, by others of theretofore unimagined capacity. Old traditions and practices of steel-making were wiped away, and, in too many cases, output was apparently the chief aim, with the result that much dissatisfaction with the wear and safety of rails was felt by railway officials, and the general public was concerned as to its safety when traveling. Professor Somasundaran has given an excellent presentation of the numerous problems which remain to be solved before the selective aggregation of fine particulates is likely to see broad commercial application in the beneficiation of mineral fines. However it is useful, I think, to reiterate some of the major problem areas. The over-riding factor which has limited the development of selective aggregation techniques is that processes such as coagulation and flocculation tend to be inherently non-selective. Conditions which favor the aggregation of one kind of fine particles usually favor the aggregation of all kinds of particles. As Professor Somasundaran has pointed out, the state of aggregation of a fine-particle dispersion is primarily determined by the forces of interaction between the individual particles. In most systems, the dominant forces are: 1. van der Waals - London Dispersion forces between the particles themselves 2. electrical double layer forces 3. steric forces between adsorbed layers on the surfaces of the particles. The London Dispersion forces between like particles are always attractive, but for dissimilar particles dispersed in a fluid medium can, in some cases, lead to a net repulsion. Electrical double layer forces always lead to repulsion between like particles but can, again, cause either attraction or repulsion for dissimilar materials.
