AT bottom of this page is a photograph recently taken by a student-John E. Stewart-of the most northerly situated college in the world, the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines. It is situated at College, near Fairbanks, Alaska, approximately on the 65th parallel of latitude, and therefore just south of the Arctic Circle. It is farther north than Hudson Bay, and in about the same latitude as southern Greenland.

Generally speaking, there is nothing very difficult about taking good microgrztphs of photogenic thin sections or grains with a petrographic microscope-camera setup. However, sometimes it is desired to show some detail that cannot be illustrated satisfactorily by the usual micrographs taken with parallel polarized light, with crossed nicols, or even with two micrographs. A simple procedure giving good results has been used at Battelle Memorial Institute for subjects falling into this classification, and it is believed to be of interest, especially to research people who must sell a point to executives through the medium of well-illustrated reports. The following problem illustrates a typical application: It is desired to photograph a thin section of an iron ore to illustrate the character and association of the iron oxides and the individual quartz crystals. A magnification of 75 dia. is acceptable. A micrograph of the field in question (Fig. Ia) was taken with parallel polarized light. Due precaution was taken to provide critical illumination, correct exposure, a sharp focus, a good darkroom technique, and other essential conditions. It illustrates correctly the iron oxides, but it fails to show the individual quartz crystals. A micrograph of the identical field (Fig. Ib) was taken under the same precise conditions, but with crossed nicols. It gives a better idea of the character of the individual quartz crystals but is likely to be misinterpreted unless accompanied by a lengthy descriptive note. This micrograph suggests that the centrally located, large black area is composed entirely of iron oxides. That this' is an incorrect interpretation is evident by reexamining the micrograph of Fig. Ia. The correct interpretation is that the dark area contains quartz crystals oriented with their optical directions parallel to, or nearly parallel to, the vibration directions of the polarizer and analyzer of the microscope. Thus, the executive, or anyone who had not done the work personally, would get no more than a fair interpretation, even if two micrographs were included; and in the interests of both brevity and clarity, one micrograph usually is more desirable. Exactly how many quartz crystals occur in this region cannot be told from the two micrographs, and a printing of the two negatives in register would likewise not show the detail desired. Thus, it is evident that some subjects cannot be satisfactorily illustrated by the usual procedures. In photographing Fig. Ic the light was subdued and, during the entire exposure of 75 sec., the analyzer nicol was rotated uniformly in its mounting from a crossed position to 45° uncrossed position to introduce the desired amount of contrast in the various individual quartz crystals. The true reproduction of the character and association of the iron oxides, and the additional structure and detail in the quartz areas, is apparent. It might be

Some eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur mere naturally in the limekiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way = common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known Pact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature..• This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseoua fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced— 1st. That gaseous fuel only would accomplish the work successfully. 2d. That since a high temperature was required to insure a rapid oxidation of the sulphur, and also to make the ore open and porous,

A practical program of education for workers of the mining industries is being formulated by the Federal Board for Vocational Education in cooperation with the states in which this industry is a dominant one. The Federal Government last year passed a law, known as the Federal Vocational Education Act, that provides for the promotion of vocational education and for cooperation with the states in the promotion of such education in agriculture and trades and industries and in the preparation of teachers of vocational subjects. More than 1,000,000 men in the continental United States are employed in mines and quarries. The meeting of the needs of the coal-mining industry, therefore, is the problem of greatest importance in the point of numbers to be served. Moreover, the dangers in coal mining are greater than in metal mining. Practically all states have set up educational and technical standards for the position of foreman, boss, superintendent, etc., and every applicant for these positions must have a certificate of competency. The qualifications, too, are becoming increasingly difficult in the field of technical information. In some states, every miner must have a certificate, which is issued by the mine examining board only after an oral examination. NeaRly 25 years ago operating officials in the northern anthracite field were confronted with the problem of profitably mining virgin beds of thin coal (those 48 in. and under) or destroying them by mining underlying thick beds. To solve this problem costly hand-mining methods were replaced by cheaper mechanical methods, which eliminated the need for the lifting of bottom or the brushing of top in excessive quantities, which was essential if proper height for hand loading1 was to be provided. During this period long-face mining was an outstanding development. In its favor in comparison with any other method were the ease with which undercutting machines could be used, a differential in powder cost of about fifteen cents per ton in favor of this method over mining from a solid chamber or pillar face, and a greater production per day from a single working place, resulting in lower capital expenditures for a given total production, closer supervision and lower transportation cost. The long faces were drilled by jackhammer and undercut by machines. The coal from the cut was loaded into mine cars placed on the gangway road by means of a double-drum mechanical scraper engine and a mechanical V-type scoop. A tugger hoist was used to spot empty cars at the loading point from a supply placed at the operation by an electric mine locomotive. During loading the roof was supported by vertical wooden props paralleling the face. After the loading was completed the scraper engine and the ropes that had been used to propel the scoop in the loading of coal transferred the props to and along the face. A row of unfilled cogs was then built parallel to the new face and about 6 ft. from it. These cogs were usually made 6 by 3 ft., the longer dimension paralleling the face; they were placed on an average at 12-ft. centers. These wooden cogs were left in place and were buried later by falling roof. Attempts to remove them were never successful. When a new long face was started, the cog spacing would be increased to about 20-ft. centers. As successive cuts were made, weight would begin on the cogs, and they

THERE seems to be in the public mind, and even in the minds of some coal-operators not experienced in mines subject to dust-explosions, a feeling that there has been something mysterious at the bottom of a number of recent American colliery-explosions. It has been declared in cases of accidents in mines regarded as particularly well equipped, in which every preventive precaution was said to have been taken, that the explosions were incomprehensible, and resulted from causes beyond the present knowledge of the practical coal-operator. But it is safe to say that no explosion has taken place which could not be explained by reasons well understood by most operators. The LT. S. Geological Survey Test Laboratory, recently inaugurated at Pittsburg for the reported purpose of investigating scientifically the matter of explosions in mines, will discover no new explanation of explosions. It call, however, co-ordinate the previous investigations of similar boards in England and on the Continent; and it may do a vast amount of good by promulgating widely, and in a form comprehensible by the most unlettered miner, certain facts and obvious deductions that cannot but have an effect in reducing the number and extent of the mine-disasters which, in the last few years, have been so terrible in frequency and magnitude. The only possible sources of explosions of any magnitude in coal-mines are : (1) explosives stored in quantity in the mine; (2) gases generated or liberated in the mine; and (3) coal-dust. Combinations of any of the three may, of course, take part in the result. The danger of any great loss of life from stored explosives alone is very remote. The simplest ordinary precaution forbids the presence, in one place underground, of any considerable quantity of explosives, and it would require an

At the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that: The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rcjections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blastfurnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. In recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general interpretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystallization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hardness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

FOR a number of years the production and use of super-purity aluminum (better than 99.99 pct) has been steadily increasing. High-grade lots of such aluminum show certain outstanding characteristics not found in lower grades containing principally silicon, iron and copper as impurities. One such characteristic is the so-called "self annealing," that is, the recrystallization of the heavily cold worked metal at room temperature.' Interest therefore is aroused as to the effects of the impurities. It is well known that the amounts of silicon and copper which occur in aluminum of better than 99.95 pct are completely soluble, at least at elevated temperatures (above 200°C). Iron, on the other hand, is known to be fairly insoluble in solid aluminum. Thus, a knowledge of the limits of this solubility would be of considerable use in studying the characteristics of the high purity metal. All investigators have agreed that iron has very low solubility in solid aluminum. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 reported traces of an aluminum-iron phase in the "purest samples of aluminum obtainable." Gwyer and Phillips3 reported that an iron constituent was visible under the microscope in metal containing ".0088 per cent iron." Roth1 found that in the solid state the solubility of iron in high purity aluminum was 0.01, 0.01, 0.017 and 0.022 pct at 225, 320, 500 and 600°C respectively. Dix5 working with alloys containing less than 0.03 pct impurities, concluded from microscopic and chemical analyses of eutectic areas that the eutectic composition was close to 1.7 pct iron. Dix placed the eutectic temperature at 655°C'. Archer and Fink,6 using high purity aluminum-iron alloys, found that the hypoeutectic liquidus intersects the eutectic horizontal at 1.7 pct. This is in fair agreement with the investigation of the aluminum-iron system by Gwyer and Phillips who placed the eutectic at 1.89 pct iron with a freezing point of 653° PREPARATION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF ALLOYS Electrolytically refined aluminum (99.991 pct aluminum) and a high purity aluminum-iron alloy (11.45 pct iron) were used in the preparation of the alloys for this investigation. To aid in controlling the iron content of the experimental alloys, an alloy of lower iron content was prepared first from these materials. The high purity aluminum was melted and heated to about 700°C in a plumbago crucible coated with alundum cement and the aluminum-iron alloy was then added. The alloy was thoroughly stirred, fluxed and skimmed and then chill-cast into notch bars. The analyses of the three materials are given in Table I. The alloys for the determination of the solid solubility of iron in aluminum were prepared by melting 600 g total of the aluminum plus the required quantity of the aluminum-iron alloy (No. 92531). WHEN I was in South Africa during the latter part of 1904, there were three known tin-fields, which may be called the Cape Town, the Bushveld and the Swaziland fields. THE. CAPE TOWN TIN-FIELD. This district is situated near Kuils river, 20 miles west of Cape Town, and 5 miles from Kuils River station on the Cape Town & Stellenbosch Railway. The deposits are in granite, intrusive in the Malmesbury beds, which are supposed to be of Silurian or Cambrian age. The granite, resisting denudation better than the surrounding shales,, has formed low-lying hills, the highest of which, the Bottlelary Berg, is 1,510 ft. above sea-level. , The rock consists of quartz, orthoclase feldspar and biotite mica; tourmaline is also present. The feldspar occurs in large crystals. The rock is generally decomposed on the surface, and the decomposition sometimes extends as deep as 100 ft. This formation-granite intrusive in Silurian shales-extends for many miles to the northeast, but so far as I know the Kuils River deposits are the only ones now known to occur in it, though probably further prospecting will reveal other deposits. This particular discovery was accidental;. alluvial tin being found in the course of boring for oil. The Kuils River Deposit. This comprises both lode and alluvial tin. The lode strikes N. and S., and dips about 30° E. into the hill. It is 5 ft. wide, and composed of dense white quartz, in which pinkish-gray cassiterite is distributed in large crystals. The vein also contains considerable quantities of wolfram. Fig. 1 is a rough plan of the relative positions of the lode and the alluvial deposit, the latter, as shown, following the course of a stream, while the lode crops out on the hillside

Dimensional changes generally occur during the sintering of metal powder compacts. These changes may have several causes and their magnitude depends upon the numerous variables involved in the process, such as the nature of the powder, size and shape of the grains, compacting pressure, rate of heating, maximum temperature, length of time at temperature, and furnace atmosphere. Among all the variables, time, temperature, and compacting pressure are probably the most important ones, and the effect of each one of the other variables can be studied separately once the effect of these is well understood. The most precise method of studying the phenomenon of dimensional changes in a compact consists of heat treating the compacts at various temperatures for different lengths of time. In this method, only very small specimens can be used, in order to achieve rapid rates of heating and cooling. The technique involved in these measurements is very simple, but is time consuming. Another experimental approach to the problem consists of measuring the change in length of a compact as it is being heated at a constant rate. Although the two variables, time and temperature, are combined into a single one (rate of heating), the results obtained by this technique may be of great interest from both practical and theoretical points of view. The purpose of this paper is to describe a systematic investigation of the change in length during sintering of compacts made of one or several metal powders. Experimental Procedure The change in lenght of compacts during sintering was measured with an automatic recording dilatometer. In this instrument the change in length and the temperature are recorded as functions of time on two separate charts and the rates of heating and cooling may be varied from 1 to 20°F per min. The temperature may be kept constant at any value up to 2200°F during any predetermined length of time and the change in length recorded as a function of time. Provision is made for atmosphere control inside the fused silica tube containing the specimen. Three different magnifications are provided, so that 1 in. on the chart corresponds to 0.002, 0.005, or 0.010 in. change in length. The mechanism following the change

In Mr. Weed's interesting paper, frequent reference is made to the Cananea copper-deposits, which are said to have been so vigorously exploited that they produced 14,000,000 Ib. of copper in 1901. The ore-bodies which yielded this large quantity of metal are described as a product of contact-metamorphism, and in Mr. Weed's genetic classification of such deposits, they receive a place under the sub-heading, "Deposits impregnating and replacing beds of contact-zone."* They are considered by Mr. Weed to represent a special type under this head, and are further classified as: " l. Chalcopyrite deposits: (a) Pyrrhotite ores; (6) Magnetite ores, Cananea type." In condensing much information into a comparatively small space, the presentation of a subject may be so abbreviated as to detract from its clearness. The situation at La Cananea, considering its importance from an economic as well as scientific standpoint, may he worthy of more detailed description. As Mr. Weed rightly remarks, " structural differences are so important, and have SO marked a bearing, not alone on the theory of their genesis, hut also on the working of the deposits and a determination of their value as mines, that they merit a full discussion."† It is my present purpose: (1) to show that it is doubtful whether the copper of La Cananea is mined, except to a limited

This paper is concerned with the effect of propping-agent concentration on flow capacity of a fracture in the case in which there is embedment of the propping agent. Previous published studies have shown definitely that there is a relationship between fracture flow capacity and prop ping-agent concentration, and it has been shown that the theoretical results are confirmed by laboratory experiments. The problem of directly finding sand concentration for maximum flow capacity of a sand-propped fracture is solved, and formulas and charts are given to obtain this concentration under various conditions of effective overburden pressure, medium sand-grain diameter and rock properties. It is shown that, for the same effective overburden pressure and the same rock characteristics, optimum sand concentration in pounds per gallon does not depend on medium sand diameter. For conditions met in bydraulic fracturing operations, it is found that sand concentration in grains per square inch for maximum flow capacity varies within a wide range of values; this indicates the convenience of using data of fracturing pressure and rock characteristics for calculating sand concentration in order to achieve the best results in fracture treatments. INTRODUCTION It has been pointed out in the published literature1 that one important factor controls the success of a hydraulic fracturing operation — the propping of the fracture. The main effect of the propping agent is to hold the fracture open by means of the reaction forces that oppose the pressure due to the overburden. It is assumed in this paper that the propping agent is sand, that the grains are spherical and uniform in size, and that this sand is distributed in a monolayer in the fracture. The existence of a sand concentration value for maximum fracture flow capacity has been recognized since the publication of one of the first studies on the subject.2 In the reference cited, flow capacity was assumed to be proportional to the cube of the fracture volume per square inch not filled by sand. The obtained experimental curves relating to flow capacity and sand concentration had the same appearance as the curves obtained with the afore-mentioned assumption. Recent work3 has shown that fracture permeability, in the case of a monolayer, can be calculated accurately by means of a modified Kozeny-Cacman equation; thus, it can be shown that fracture pqmeability is a function of free volume in the fracture and of the rock and sand wet surfaces. The flow capacity of a fracture is dependent on the permeability of the fracture and on the fracture width. If all excessive quantity of sand is present in the fracture, its width may be large but its permeability i:; low due to the greater flow resistance; too few grains of sand per square inch are present in the fracture, sand embedment in the rock is greater and the width becomes small enough to appreciably decrease the rate of flow. To determine optimum conditions of flow, therefore, it is necessary to know the dependence of fracture width on density or concentration of propping agent. This relation is given in a study4 in which the approach to embedment is similar to the one made in a penetration hardness test of metal. With the equacions presented by Darin and Huitt,3 the number of sand grains per square inch that results in maxirnum fracture capacity can be determined graphically by plotting fracture capacity vs sand concentration. Since the relationship between fracture capacity and sand concentration may be considered known, one is led to formulate the analytical problem of directly determining sand concentration for maximum fracture flow capacity, in order to study the effect of the various quantities that come into the process. The solution of this problem appears to be interesting both from the viewpoint of fluid mechanics and from the practical viewpoint of oil production in hydraulic fracturing treatments. The object of this study was to evaluate the oxidized taconites of the western Mesabi iron range and to establish a correlation between the various basic taconite types and their concentratability. The initial work included a study of the original mineralogical and stratigraphic facies of the fresh taconite and traced the oxidation and leaching patterns developed during the conversion of this material to oxidized taconite. Subsequent studies have extended this work to include the semitaconites and also the wash and heavy media ore types widely developed in the area. Each basic original mineralogical facies or taconite type produces during alteration an equivalent secondary oxidized facies which has a unique mineralogical composition and texture. These control the concentratability of the oxidized taconites. Actually the influence of the original mineralogical composition of the iron formation extends even further and determines whether the most likely product of oxidation and leaching will be a wash ore or a heavy media ore and even to the direct shipping ores where the ratio of hematite to goethite is largely determined by the original taconite type. The relationship between original taconite, oxidized taconite, semitaconites, and wash and heavy media ores is briefly summarized in Table I. The terms are not precise and in some instances tend to overlap. The table is intended to point out only the essential differences between the various materials. The original taconite was dominantly composed of mixtures of magnetite, iron carbonate, iron silicate, and quartz (chert). In a few thin stratigraphic units, hematite was present as an original constituent. The alteration of the original taconite to oxidized taconite has resulted from the circulation of ground waters through an initial fracture system related to minor structures in the iron formation. The chemical reactions have involved the oxidation and decomposition of original minerals such as magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates to hematite or goethite. The alteration at this early stage is characterized by pseudomorphic replacement of the original minerals by oxidation products although retaining the major textural features of the original taconite. There was very little secondary migration of iron at this stage and the total iron content of the rock has been only slightly increased. Further alteration of this material to form a semi-taconite, a wash or a heavy media ore, involves extensive removal of silica in solution and significant redistribution of iron units. Wash and heavy media ores are developed by the growth of coarse secondary iron layers, dominantly goethite, coupled with the removal of silica in solution and decomposition of the cherty layers. This paper is concerned primarily with the materials classified as oxidized taconites which are characterized by oxidation of the original mineral constituents with little secondary enrichment. The area studied, shown on the index map, Fig. 1, extends some 30 miles along the strike of the Biwabik formation roughly from Hibbing to Coleraine. This study was greatly facilitated by the basic stratigraphic and mineralogical studies of Gruner1 and white2. The bulk of the material in this presentation represents a portion of the author's contribution to a study sponsored by the Great Northern Railway on the oxidized taconites of the western Mesabi.3 METHOD OF APPROACH A total of 106 drill holes, representing some 30,000 ft of drilling, were examined and sampled. The drill holes were logged and some 1500 composite samples were prepared for chemical analysis and bench scale metallurgical tests. These samples were analyzed for total iron and ferrous iron; and magnetite iron was determined by a standard Davis tube test at minus 200 mesh. Standard reduction roast tests using 150-gram samples of minus 10 mesh material were made on these 1500 composite samples with a mixture of H2, CO2, N2, and H2O at a temperature of 650°C. This roasted material was pulverized through 150 mesh and concentrated in the Davis tube. The iron recoveries and concentrate grades obtained on the roasted products were used to assess the concentratability of the oxidized taconites. Detailed mineralogical work was done on thin sec-
