This paber is concerned with the determination of equations relating elongation to the amount of shear taking place both along grain boundaries and in slip planes of poly crystalline aggregates during creep. Certain discrepancies with previously used equations are pointed out. Grain boundaries were observed to become serrated during creep, but it is shown that this does not necessarily prevent further grain boundary sliding. Direct obser-vations of subgrain boundary ingration lead to the conclusion that this migration facilitates sliding along serrated grain boundaries. It is bointed out that the state of stress at triple boints is still unknown. MOST of the mechanisms of deformation contributing to elongation are shear processes, such as slip, kinking, grain boundary sliding, and twinning. For quantitative investigations of individual deformation mechanism it is necessary to know the equation which permits the calculation of speci-tnen elongation from measured amounts of shear. This calculated elongation must then be compared with the observed total elongation. The authors' special interest concerned grain boundary sliding during creep. Although this subject has already been investigated quantitatively by McLean,' Rachinger,' and Fazan, Sherby, and Dorn, calculations indicated that none of the equations used thus far to relate shear with elongation were sufficiently well founded. A basic study of this relationship was thus made and the results of this study (which do not entirely agree with those previously used) are presented. Most of the ideas set forth apply not only to grain boundary sliding but to other mechanisms of shear as well. THE SPEAR-ELONGATION RELATIONSHIP Basic Models—The relationship between shear and elongation is trivial in the simplest case of shear, which is shown in Fig. l(a). The vector A; designates the displacement across the shear interface, and Au, and Aut are its components parallel and normal to the tensile direction, respectively. It is evident that the specimen elongation due to shear is equal to the longitudinal component of the shear vector, and it should be noted that the normal component does not contribute to the elongation of the specimen (there are, of course, two normal components in a three-dimensional model). The model shown in Fig. l(b) may be applied to mechanical twinning and to subgrain boundary tnigration. In this case the width (h) of an already existing shear band increases by the migration of an interface, but the shear angle y (angle of mis-orientation in the case of a subgrain boundary) remains constant. The geometrical relationships indicated in Fig. l(b) permit this case to be reduced to the one shown in Fig. l(a). For the resulting elongation A6 we find: where AV/V = fraction of the volume of the specimen swept by migrating interfaces , and 1 = length of specimen. Thus, assuming for example that the angle of mis-orientation is 1 deg, and that P = 45 deg, we find that the specimen elongates 0.87 pct of its length if the entire volume of the specimen is swept once by such a subgrain boundary. An example of deformation by migration of subgrain boundaries is shown in Fig. 2. The specimen shown was repolished after 9.8 pct creep strain and the test then continued for another \ pct. Since the shear vector has, in general, a component normal to the surface, subgrain boundary migration results in the formation of an inclined band delineating the region swept by the subgrain boundary. IN the broad survey of the nonferrous' metallic elements contained in this book, the reader may well be impressed by the wide range of property combinations offered by the many metals and alloys the metallurgist has prepared since before Kubla Khan. The diversity is great and the overlap is considerable. It is particularly surprising, then, to find the latest structural metal new- comer designated by such extravagant terms as "Cinderella Metal," "Wonder Metal," "Miracle Metal," "The Metal of Tomorrow," "Dream Metal or Nightmare?" and "The Middleweight Champion of the Structural Metals." Of these and others, the most appropriate designation for the metal involved, titanium, appears to be that of The Middleweight Champion. Its intermediate density of 4.5 and elastic modulus of 16 million is a unique combination between the lower density and modulus of magnesium and aluminum and the higher density and modulus of copper, nickel, and iron. It is light, strong, ductile, and corrosion resistant. A chemical neighbor in group IV of the Periodic Table, zirconium, is similar to titanium in many respects but is appreciably denser, 6.5 instead of 4.5, less stiff and relatively much less abundant. On the other hand, the resistance of zirconium to acids and alkalies is better than that of titanium. Also, compensating for its higher density, lower stiffness, and somewhat lower strength level compared with titanium, zirconium has much better permeability to slow neutrons and is much more suitable as a material of construction for nuclear reactors.

in Cast-Iron. It has been generally accepted that the presence of silicon in cast-iron leads to the formation of graphite; and this has been explained by saying that the silicon lowers the solvent power of iron for carbon at and somewhat below the freezing-point, so that, in the presence of silicon, the iron is unable to retain in solution or combination the whole of the carbon with which it has united while molten, and therefore expels the excess of carbon in the form of graphite, during and immediately after solidification. Probably the best way to study this question would be to examine pure cast-irons, i.e., those containing nothing but iron, carbon and silicon, which at the same time should have been saturated with carbon when molten. But the data for such a study are not at hand; so we must turn to commercial pig-irons as they are made in the blast-furnace, and before their composition has been changed by remelting. Much evidence has been offered of late, tending to oppose the theory of the action of silicon above set forth. Some of this evidence will be examined here. 1. Mr. Bachman's Results. In particular, Mr. F. E. Bachman† has published a collection of analyses of cast-iron, in which the proportion of graphite at first appears to be nearly independent of the proportion of silicon present. An experimental investigation of miscible fluid displacement has been made in linear porous media under highly adverse mobility ratio conditions. Various refined oils were displaced at field rates by liquid propane in both horizontal and vertical models 9 to 36 ft in length. In horizontal tests, mixed zones or transition zones form between the two liquids early in the displace-lents. Initially, the zones grow rapidly. III 2-in. diameter models, the mixed regions become nearly stable zones from 6- to 20-ft long. From then on these quasi-stable zones apparently grow only by molecular diffusion. The lenghts of the quasi-stable zones appear to be almost independent of the core material in which displacement;; are made and increase with increasing rates of injection and oil/solvent viscosity ratios. The lengths of the quasi-stable zones. measured in 2-in. diameter models at viscosity ratios and injection rates anticipated in the field indicate that essentially piston-like displacements of oil by solvent would occur. However, the mixed zone lengths increase markedly as the model diameter increases. In vertical displacements controlled by gravity drainage, only short trans-sition zones form. The entire lenghts of these zones can be accounted for by molecular diffusion. Therefore, in reservoirs having characteristics allowing a high degree of gravity drainage, nearly complete oil recovery should be attainable by miscible fluid displacement. INTRODUCTION The oil industry is faced with an ever increasing cost for finding new oil reservoirs. This, coupled with the fact that conventional methods of oil recovery usually leave from 1 to 3 bbl of oil in the ground for every barrel produced, has aroused considerable interest in developing more efficient methods. An integral part of the mechanism of many of these new methods of recovery is a miscible fluid displacement in which oil is displaced by a much less viscous materiai such as liquid propane. A numher of irlvestigators have explored the mechanics of miscible fluid displace-ment,'.2.1.'."." but in the experiments reported many of the important factors have been varied only over a limited range far removed from norma1 oilfield values. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of oil displacement by liquid propane at field rates from linear, natural-sandstone models of various sizes. Both horizontal and vertical flow tests were made. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE Refined oils with viscosities varying over a wide range were displaced at several rates by liquid Propane from both horizontal and vertical flow systems. The behavior of the displacement was observed by propane-oil analyses of the effluent and, when possible, by differential pressure measurements along the cores. A schematic flow diagram of the apParatus used to conduct the experirents is shown in Fig. 1. The cores used in the tests were 9-ft lengths cut from natural consolidated sandstone and turned to the desired diameter. These were cast in steel tubing with a low melting point (160°F) alloy which expands on solidification. Flanges welded to the ends of the steel pipes permitted sealing the ends or butting one core to another. Pressure seals were maintained with O-rings. The cores were cleaned by flushing

The orebody described below has been rediscovered and developed within the last 3 years. It has, however, been known and worked by the Chinese for hundreds of years. When assay values and size are considered, it contains what is probably one of the largest single bodies of zinc and lead sulphides yet found. The tonnages developed at other places, as at Broken Hill, are much greater but the average zinc and lead sulphide contents are considerably lower than at Bawdwin. Bawdwin is situated in the semi-independent State of Tawng Peng, one of the numerous units which make up the Northern Shan States. These States are under British rule and are generally considered as a portion of Burma. They are governed as a separate administrative unit, however, under the Lieutenant Governor of Burma. Each State is under its own chief, or Sawbwa, who has considerable power over his own subjects. Bawdwin is approximately in latitude N 23°6', longitude E 97°201, about 50 miles south of the nearest point on the Chinese border and 450 miles north of Rangoon (Fig. 1). The period at which mining was first begun at Bawdwin is unknown. The most reliable records have been obtained by deciphering local Chinese inscriptions and from these it is concluded that the work dates back to at least the beginning of the 15th century. The first undoubted reference to the mines by a European is by Syrnes in 1795. Crawford in 1827 estimated the output of silver from the mines at $600,000 anually. At about the middle of the 19th century the rebellion of the Chinese Mohammedans in the neighboring Chinese province of Yunnan so weakened the power of the Chinese that the incursions of hostile tribes (Kachins) made work extremely dangerous. The mines were finally abandoned by the Chinese about 1868. The . closing down of the mines was probably not entirely due to outside causes but may have been influenced somewhat by the increasing difficulty of handling the water, as the workings gradually descended below the water level of the district. To the Board of' Trustees, United Engineering Society I beg to submit herewith the report of the Treasurer as of December 31, 1907. Your attention is called to the fact that the resources and liabilities, receipts and disbursements statements cover all the financial transactions of the United Engineering Society from its organization up to December 31, 1907. The income and expenses of operating the building during the whole operating period from December 1 to December 31, 1907, somewhat in excess of twelve months, are given. Included in the expenses, amounting in all to $52,647.11, will be found an item entitled "Building Equipment (construction account)." The expenditures under this item were not made for the operating expenses of the building, they represent a construction account, properly speaking, covering expenditures for furnishings and equipment of the building. The Founders' Agreement specifically provides for this class of expenditure under the provision that the Founder Societies shall each be liable for a charge not to exceed $200,000 of principal, which shall include the land and building completed and ready for occupancy, together with the " furnishings, equipment and personal property therein." Certain details of equipment are yet to be supplied, and it. is proposed in the near future to call upon the Founder Societies for an assessment on their respective land and building funds to cover this item of building equipment. Such action would enable the item of $10,039.85 to be transferred to the income account and reduce correspondingly the assessment

An investigation of the Cr-Ni system has revealed that there exists a eutectoid transformation at about 1180°C. 'The transformation in chromium implied by the eutectoid reaction was detected at about 100°C below its melting point. Associated with the eutectoid transformation, a metastable transition structure has been found. THE Cr-Ni phase diagram is shown in current literature to be a simple eutectic system in which the high chromium end of the diagram is incompletely determined, Fig. 1. The last investigation of this system was undertaken in 1936.' Because of limitations in metal purity, especially of chromium, and temperature measuring techniques, the diagram should be accepted with some reservations, as was indicated by Hansen.V or examwle.-, the wresence of the compound Cr²Ni, with a tetragonal structure," remains unverified and incompatible with the simple eutectic diagram. The work reported here began because of discrepancies that appeared in experimental studies in the binary alloys Cr-Ni and in the ternary system Cr-Mo-Ni. The existing binary Cr-Ni diagram failed to provide a complete explanation of observations made by microscope, X-ray, and thermal analyses. Experimental Methods The materials employed were of a higher degree of purity than were available to previous investigators. The Mond nickel used had a nominal purity of 99.87 pct, while the electrolytic chromium analyzed 99.03 pct with the major impurity being 0.5 to 0.7 pct oxygen with some iron. All alloys were melted in a vacuum furnace to remove dissolved gases, sufficient carbon was added to the charge to combine with all the oxygen as CO. Final analysis determined the carbon as about 0.02 pct and the oxygen around 0.06 pct or slightly more. Stabilized zirconia crucibles and thermocouple protection tips were used throughout and contributed no detectable impurity to the melts, as long as the oxygen in the chromium was kept low. Heats averaged about 250 g, which permitted about 2 in. of the thermocouple protection tips to be submerged. The temperature drop across the thermocouple protection tip was determined to be about 3°C, a minor source of error. The alloys, after removal from the vacuum furnace, were placed in a furnace operating in a purified argon atmosphere for the thermal analyses. An- nealed wolfram-molybdenum thermocouples provided the primary means of temperature determination, though a Pt-Pt-10 pct Rh couple was employed for a check when possible. A sensitive, high-speed Leeds and Northrup Speedomax recording potentiometer indicated the thermocouple output. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained primarily on a Norelco unit, which permitted diffraction angles only up to 45" (28 = 90"). In general, either rotated or stationary solid samples were used, because it later evolved that many samples were susceptible to transformation resulting from the cold working involved in pulverizing. It was also noted that rotating a sample sometimes suppressed weak lines, so, usually, samples were not rotated. Later a high temperature camera was adapted for use at temperatures up to 1400 °C on the Norelco unit utilizing both solid and powdered samples. ANYONE who has been confronted with the problem of predicting the performance of a sand-pump installation is vitally aware of the dearth of precise information that has been published on this important subject. Such data as have been collected are not readily available in a concise and readily usable form, so that many operators would find it a considerable chore to find the pertinent information required to undertake a detailed study. The purpose of this paper is to assemble such established data, correlate them with field experience and outline the factors that must be appraised in the determination of a satisfactory pump installation. The transportation of solids in solution is of vital interest to every mill superintendent and operator, and many of the factors that are involved in this hydraulic problem vary widely from installation to installation, and in some cases even from time to time on any one installation.. These include: type of solids (including shape of particles), size of solids (grind), percentages of fines (slimes), dilution of pulp, contour of pipe line, type of pipe, age of pipe line, effect that diameter of pipe has on characteristic flow conditions, and other factors. Some of these have been fairly well determined by experimental work but many still must be established through interpolating or extrapolating between values that have been derived from known field conditions. Most problems primarily concern the transportation of a definite weight of dry solids from one specific location to another. The type of material, shape of particles, grind and percentages of fines are established and very often the dilution at which the solids must be handled as well. The problem then evolves into a determination of the size, type and contour of the pipe line and the net effective head against which the pump must operate. Before discussing the determination of the head, it might be well to review the interrelationship between the pump discharge (capacity), the head developed by the pump and the pump speed, which will apply to any centrifugal pump installation. EFFECT OF PUMP SPEED Basically, the head developed by a centrifugal pump varies as the square of the pump speed and the discharge as the first power of the speed. However, even at constant speed a centrifugal pump will operate over a wide range of capacities, depending upon the head that must be developed to deliver the liquid or pulp to the end of the pipe line. This is shown graphically in Fig. I. If the pump in question is being driven at a constant speed of 900 r.p.m. it will deliver 500 U. S. gal. per min. against a head of 56 ft., 800 U. S. gal. per min. against a head of 50 ft., and so on. In other words, at this speed the capacity of the pump will be determined and limited by

In September 1937, the Ohio Copper Co. inaugurated the treatment of its copper-bearing mill tailings at Lark, Utah. These tailings had been accumulated during the regular operation of the Ohio Copper mine and mill over the period 1907 to 1919. Gravity concentration had been employed except for a comparatively short period in 1919, when flotation was used. The ore milled during that period assayed about I per cent Cu. The chief copper mineral, chalcocite, was disseminated in a shattered quartzite, mainly along fracture or cleavage planes. The quartzite gangue was extremely hard and grinding to liberation resulted in excessive sliming of the "sooty" chalcocite, with consequent high tailings losses. Recovery on the seven million tons treated was probably less than 60 per cent of the total copper content. As early as 1918, attempts had been made to sample the dump. In 1928, a complete sampling program was undertaken. The sampling consisted of seventy-four 5-in. post auger holes drilled to the full depth of the dump at regular intervals of 250 ft. Each 10-ft. portion thereof comprised a sample for analysis. Each sample was screened, rolled, divided into three parts, dried and assayed. The reject was retained for testing purposes. From the depth of the auger holes a contour map of the dump was plotted, Fig. I, which gives percentages of tonnage and copper content. The tonnage within the limit of the drill holes was estimated at about five million tons with an average content of 0.42 per cent Cu, 31 per cent of which (0.13 per cent) was acid-soluble. A screen analysis of the composite dump sample is shown in Table I. Flotation tests by several companies and individuals were then made, the results of which ranged from 62 to 74 per cent recovery. On the basis of these, a 200-ton pilot plant employing straight flotation was built and operated for a few months. Operation of this plant was unsuccessful, as no provision had been made to handle the copper-bearing solutions resulting from the water-soluble copper, a point that was overlooked in the laboratory test work. Attempts to decant the copper-bearing solution for precipitation in the usual manner ahead of flotation were not satisfactory because of low water recovery (owing to poor settling characteristics of the pulp) and contamination of the copper precipitate with unsettled slime. Low copper prices in 1931 necessitated the termination of testing. With the stimulus of higher copper prices in 1937, a review was made of metallurgical

IN recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general inter-pretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystal-lization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hard-ness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

IN 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temper-atures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several parti-cles had become one unit. From this dis-covery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the appli-cation of about 3000 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper pro-duced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. THE possible sources of potash salts in the United States have been considered from many points of view during the last several years, but it is only within the last two or three months that the situation has become acute. We import from Germany, the only source of large supply, more than $10,000,000 worth of potash salts annually, and this business has been badly crippled by the European war. If there was ever a time in our industrial existence when the necessity of providing for our own needs was more acute than it is now, we are not aware of it. One has only to study the price, lists of chemicals sent out by the large supply houses to see the change wrought within a very short time. Whether or no these prices are to maintain for a considerable time, no one can say; but it appears to be probable that we shall not see prices materially lower for a period of uncomfortable length, to say the least. It is not my purpose at this time to discuss the various sources of supply of potash salts that have been suggested or recommended. Some of them might afford a pleasing relief but all of them combined would not affect the situation seriously. If we are to have our own sources of potash salts, they will have to compare, in some efficient manner, with the sources upon which we have drawn during the last 20 or 30 years; i.e., they must exist-in minable quantities. It seems to me to be quite idle to speculate upon our domestic sources of potash if those sources are not of a character similar to those upon which we have so long depended. A few thousand or, perhaps,, a few hundred thousand dollars' worth of chemically derived 'potash may be produced under the stress of present conditions, but when we consider that each year demands more than $10,000,000 worth, we must look to underground sources; we must look to mines similar to the famous Stassfurt and Halle deposits. If we cannot mine potash salts, we shall have to do without them for a while.

Ancient as is the art of producing copper, so ancient is one of its eternal problems: refractories. Looking backward, in the light of present knowledge, clouded though it be, one cannot avoid a sense of profound respect for the patience, acumen and courage of those who have wrought so successfully despite difficulties, a more accurate understanding of which seems merely to accentuate. The problem of refractories arises from the necessity for constructing containers in which to bring natural ores into thermal solution in order to effect reduction and separation of the valuable metal content and free it of undesirable contamination while producing a waste slag. The very forces known to produce thermal solution of sufficient liquidity are necessarily destructive of exposed refractory linings in proportions varying inversely with thermal conductivity, directly with the porosity and ease of fluxing of the refractories used, and directly with the temperatures employed. Beyond this, mechanical forces are set up within the refractory lining incident to rapid heating or cooling, shrinkage at high temperatures, and unequal or excessive loading, that frequently pass the elastic limit, causing spalling or distortion. The effects of these forces are often accentuated by the necessity of providing at the same time as hot a bath and as cool a container as are consistent with fuel economy. Evolution in the Use of Refractories Clay Brick.—Fireclay and clay refractories had to yield wherever they were in contact with slags rich in basic oxides, first because of the combining power of those oxides with free silica and secondly because of the tendency of alumina to form either aluminates or alumina-silicates of varying complexity. Of no less importance, the incipient fusion point was low as compared with good clay brick of today, while the brick lacked strength at high temperatures. Expansion was slight, therefore it was difficult to make and maintain tight walls, roof, or bottom. However, the spalling tendency was low because of some of these properties and clay brick have retained their place in roasting furnaces, boiler furnace linings, and in the upper walls of some of the reverberatory types such as some refining, anode and wire-bar furnaces. They have served often and most efficiently for hot patching.

The use of interference colors is the simplest experimental way to determine the approximate film thicknesses of oxides formed on liquid metals. A large amount of data under various conditions can be obtained easily and quickly. The oxidation of liquid lead has been studied by several investigators,1-5 but all of these studies have been on thick oxide scales. The purpose of- this work was to investigate the range 0 to 2000A film thickness. By using electron diffraction, Jenkins concluded that the surface of the film on molten lead is yellow orthorhombic PbO with the (110) planes parallel to the surface. This was confirmed by Shimaoka and Yamai7 who also used electron diffraction from the melting point of lead to 730°C. The rate of oxidation of pure liquid lead in air was measured in the temperature range 453" to 643°C by observing the rate of formation of interference colors on static lead baths. Approximately 170 g of lead (99.999 pct) was placed in a refractory dish having a working surface of 13.8 sq cm. This crucible was placed in a deep-well resistance furnace open to the atmosphere. The times at which the various interference colors appeared, after wiping the molten metal surface clean, were determined at 453", 533°, 600°, and 643°C. Most mineralized areas in the central San Juan Mountains, Colorado, are associated with the youngest subsidence structures in a large volcanic cauldron complex that formed concurrently with eruption of the surrounding ash-flow field. Two local types have been recognized: (1) fissure-vein deposits along faults characterized by relatively late movement, and (2) hydrothermally altered and mineralized areas associated with postsubsidence Fisher Quartz Latite centers. The first type has provided most production in the past; the potential of the second type has yet to be adequately tested.

The general term "coal mine bump" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in-situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods. They are related to geological factors and mining techniques. Coal bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with yielding that occurs with progressive mining. Unstable releases of energy occur when the coal is able to absorb less energy than is released by the surrounding rock mass during the yielding process. At any stage of mining, the amount of excess energy so released is governed by the mining geometry, the overburden stress, the elastic properties of the rock mass, and the stress-strain characteristics of the seam material. If the coal in the vicinity of the working face is crushed, the peak abutment pressure occurs at some distance into the intact portions of the seam, and mining takes place in essentially destressed coal. With subsequent mining, additional yielding occurs, excess energy may be released, and the peak stress is again shifted into the solid. This process continues until the mining geometry is such that the zone of peak stress is effectively surrounded by yielding coal, at which point it can be anticipated that further mining will produce dramatic redistributions of stress and be accom¬panied by large releases of energy. On this basis, the differences between several alternatives for mining a given block of coal may be pronounced.

Conclusions reached in a paper by weertmanl are amplified in a mathematical and graphical way. It is shown that in a stressed crystal a straight dis-location may be in a position of unstable equilibrium with respect to helix development, and how a small perturbation may start the dislocation off on its helical path. Helix development occurs by diffision; bulk diffusion is necessary for development from a screw, but core diffision is sufficient for development from an edge dislocation. For a mixed dislocation helix development can take place by core diffusion if the helix also climbs; a diffusion reversal takes place when the slope of the helix equals the slope of the Burgers vector. The work done on a crystal by the external forces is graphically shown to be consistent with the direction of motion of the dislocation in helix development. Finally a detailed mechanism for tangle formation from helices is presented. In the course of helix development a glide situation may be reached where a segment of each helix loop lies in a slip plane in which it can expand by glide. Thus is it visualized how a helix can deteriorate into a tangle. A paper by weertmanl proposes dislocation-tangle formation by a helical dislocation mechanism. The present paper amplifies Weertman's arguments in a mathematical and graphical way and presents some further ramifications of the proposed model. The importance of dislocation tangles is discussed in Weertman's paper and the references cited therein. The mechanism of their formation is not yet understood. Weertman proposes that in cold-worked crystals conditions exist suitable for the conversion of straight dislocations into helices and subsequently into tangles. Helix formation occurs by a diffusion process and Weertman proposes that at low temperatures only core diffusion is important. The present paper necessarily repeats some of Weertman's work. Since the mathematical development and notation used are slightly different from his, this was thought necessary for clarity. GEOMETRY OF THE HELIX weertman2 has shown that the equilibrium form of any dislocation line is a helix if it is assumed that the energy per unit length (line tension) of the dis- location is constant. For the special case that no external forces act on the dislocation, the helix reduces to a straight line. We shall assume in this paper that the dislocation has a helical form even when it is not in equilibrium. The parametric equation of a helix is, see Fig. l: where a is the radius of the cylinder tangent to the helix, and 270 the pitch of the helix. The pitch is related to v, the number of turns per unit length (along the axis) by the relation: When a = 0 Eq. [I] gives a straight line in the z direction. The growth of a straight dislocation into a helix is now described mathematically by letting a vary from zero to its final value. THE use of ball, rod and tube mills for grinding ore, cement and other materials has grown so rapidly during the past forty years that the world's annual consumption of ferrous grinding media for these mills is now estimated to be between one half million and one million tons per year. Ferrous grinding balls constitute the major portion of this tonnage. Obviously they represent sufficient value to justify thorough studies' of the factor sgoverning their performance. The selection of grinding balls is governed principally by: I. Quality (wear resistance, impact resistance, soundness, and the like). 2. Sources of supply and delivered cost. 3. Grinding characteristics or efficiency in the ball mill. This paper deals principally with the quality of ferrous grinding balls. In the study of these factors certain data relative to the fundamental nature of ball wear in ball mills have been obtained. These data are also presented and discussed briefly. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUITABLE WEAR TEST A study of the fundamental factors governing the quality of grinding balls has been hampered seriously by the fact that a competent test has, in the past, involved the purchase of several hundred tons of balls of a specific type which were then run in one or more ball mills for a period ranging from several months to several years' duration. Often, during the period of test, it became necessary to change operating conditions or the character of the ore fed, to the test mill with the result that the rate of ball consumption changed and the test figures became of little value. Under such circumstances, progress in the development of better grinding balls, has been necessarily slow. Economic factors and variations in the quality of balls produced by different sources of supply generally make it necessary for each mill operator to determine for himself the most suitable type of balls for his mills. In our own ball mill grinding operations at Climax, Colo., we were faced with this problem. After we had run a few large scale wear tests at considerable expense we decided to investigate the possibilities of a small scale wear test which would be capable of testing numerous types of balls within a relatively short time. The most important requirement of any test is, of course, that it give results which can be used to predict accurately the wear in full scale operations. It was known that Ellis and his associates1,2 had developed a method of testing grinding balls by small scale tests run at the Ontario Research Foundation. Ellis' method of testing was used as a starting point in our investigations. THE North Texas district presented in this paper includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young. It corresponds with the Texas Railroad Commission's district No. 9. Table I conforms with the nomenclature of pools as designated by the Commission. Most of the oil and gas produced in this region, generally referred to as the Red River uplift, comes from the Pennsylvanian strata. In recent years, however, increasing amounts are being developed in both the Mississippian and Ordovician.
