INTRODUCTION One basic design feature utilized in all caving and sublevel stoping techniques is the drawpoint. These draw- points may be located on sublevels when using sublevel caving methods, or may be located at the floor pillar when using block caving, sublevel stoping, or vertical crater retreat methods. How the drawpoint is designed and developed, how the ore is withdrawn from it, and how the ore is hauled to the shaft or portal encompasses the loading and hauling function. Historically, predominate loading and hauling equipment for caving and sublevel stoping has been scraper slushes, air powered overshot loaders, and rail mounted train haulage. All of this equipment has two common constraints. 1. The equipment locked into specific work sites and is not easily shifted to another work site. This constraint can often lead to low utilization and low productivity of the equipment. 2. The equipment is designed to work in the horizontal plane, which requires that the various horizontally-oriented working levels be connected by vertical raises. Vertical development by means of raises is not only increasingly expensive, but also is not well adapted to movement of large equipment into the s topes. In the last 20 years, two revolutionary labor saving concepts have become common in caving and sublevel stoping. 1. Long-hole drilling, which has mechanized the development of the drawpoint extraction structures as well as the actual stoping and undercutting. 2. Vertical access by means of trackless ramps between levels, and the consequent use of rubber-tired vehicles not only for loading and hauling ore, but also for the rapid movement of men, material, and equipment into the stopes. The introduction of trackless mining systems for loading and hauling has not been easy. Mine planners have had to re-orient their thinking to the larger operating space required by trackless equipment. Larger access drifts have necessitated reconsideration of mine layouts to insure proper ground support. Spiral ramp developments were often laid out on slopes steeper than the equipment could negotiate economically. Mine operators had to accept the added responsibility of roadway maintenance, water removal, increased ventilation, and more technical mechanical maintenance. As the mine operators enthusiastically embraced the superior productivity of trackless mining systems, they some- times disregarded opportunities to combine the older types of equipment with trackless vehicles to maximize productivity at lowest cost. In order to gain a proper perspective on this problem, it is necessary to review the various techniques of loading and hauling and to become more aware of the advantages or disadvantages that each system or combination contributes. LOADING Loading consists of two functions, (1) primary loading from a drawpoint and (2) secondary loading into long- haul system, a truck, train, or possibly a belt conveyor. Mine planners have four basic loading systems available to fit various operating conditions. These are, (1) gravity, (2) scrapers, (3) rail-mounted loaders, and (4) trackless loaders. Each system can produce optimum results under specific conditions. Gravity Loading Gravity loading is probably the oldest system in general use today.

A new priority list has recently been promulgated, introducing a few slight changes. This paper presents the essentials of a mathematical method of studying the pressure behavior of an oil reservoir as the fluids are withdrawn. Methods are shown Whereby the behavior of a reservoir can be used to predict the future relationship between withdrawals and pressure. The oil reservoir is considered as a small part of a large porous continuum, which contains for the most part water. The expansion of this water resulting from a decrease of pressure in the oil zone causes a movement of water that is an important factor in the relationship between fluid withdrawals and reservoir pressure. Examples are given to illustrate the methods of pressure prediction for a circular reservoir containing undersaturated crude, the pressure distribution over a field that has a uniform production rate, the effect of a fault line near a field, the mutual interference of near-by fields, and the perturbing influence of a gas cap. Applications of the analysis to well-spacing problems are shown. Introduction The pressure-prediction methods to be described here are based upon the conception of an oil pool as a small part of a large porous continuum, containing for the most part water. The formation containing this water may be thought of as extending over an area of many square miles and having one or more small bodies of oil or gas trapped in high spots or reservoirs. It will be treated as having the genera1 aspect of a thin, flat sheet with an over-all tilt to the horizontal and with numerous small high spots, tight zones, and irregularities This porous continuum will be treated as being much more extensive than the oil or gas zones, but will be recognized as terminating at such large boundaries as a general fault, outcrop, unconformity, or pinch-out. Throughout the greater part of this limited porous continuum it is likely that there is a hydraulic connection. If this is true, the removal of fluid in one place will cause a disturbance that eventually will travel to all parts of the continuum. This picture has led to the recognition of water as the major fluid in the porous continuum and in many cases the expansive nature of this water as the main driving force producing the oil. The next step is the solution of the general problem of compressible liquid behavior in porous media. The works of Hurst I and Muskat2 introduced the idea of using heat-flow mathematics to consider the problem of compressible liquid flow in a porous medium. Before their reports, it had been thought sufficient to use the incompressible fluid-flow work of S1ichter.3 Law Muskat4 pointed out in detail how far the incompressible-fluirl assumption, deviated from fact even for water, of which the compressibility is about 3 X 10-6 volumes per unit volume per pound per square inch. DATING back some five years ago, various foundries made inquiries as to the probable total carbon content in a given specification and grade of pig iron. Up to that time we had no data, and except for a few occasional determinations of total carbon, no attempt had ever been made to set up routine determinations of total carbon. In fact, at that time, a cast analysis was considered sufficient, without examining at further length into possible variations of analysis between ladles of the same cast. In view of the various inquiries as to total carbon, we sampled all piles of all grades of pig iron, making complete analyses. Finding some variation in carbon content, we secured more samples and plotted the carbon content with respect to silicon in each grade of iron except for the higher phosphorus foundry iron, where it was necessary to divide the group into twenty-point phosphorus ranges. This is easily understood, owing to the falling off of carbon content with the increase in phosphorus con-tent, silicon in each case being the same. In addition, these curves clearly demonstrate the lowering of the carbon content as the silicon is increased. In order to insure accuracy and reliable determinations the following method of sampling and analysis was employed: Two pigs selected from each end of the car, each car containing iron from one 50-ton ladle, are drilled with a 5/16-in. drill all the way through from top to bottom in the center of one section of the pig. The drillings are collected and transferred to an 80-mesh sieve; the portion passing through and the portion retained are placed in separate envelopes and labeled accordingly. The amount of sample in each envelope is weighed to obtain the proportionate amount of coarse and fine drillings, then a factor weight of sample (1.3636 grams) made up of proportionate

APPLICATION of diffusion laws in the customary form to experimental studies in binary metallic solid solutions has shown the diffusion coefficient to vary with concentration for all systems investigated. The factors determining this variation have not been ascertained. However, the question of whether the diffusion coefficient would become a constant, independent of concentration throughout a single phase if the concentration gradient in the diffusion equation were replaced by an activity gradient has been an attractive subject for speculation. Wagner1 derived an expression for the force acting on a diffusing particle in terms of the chemical potential. This was also the approach chosen by Jost2 in his monograph. From a somewhat different point of view, Eyring3 and his co-workers have used activity gradients when dealing with diffusion in concentrated nonideal solutions. The only actual test with experimental data is that given by Darken,4 though this is more qualitative than quantitative. Many others opposed the application in any way of thermodynamic concepts to kinetic phenomena, including diffusion processes. A rigorous examination of this principle requires good data expressing the relationship between activity and concentration for solid solutions for which reliable diffusion work has been done. The literature provides such information only for the interstitial solution of carbon in gamma iron (austenite) and for the substitutional copper-zinc solutions (alpha brass). Activity data for carbon in austenite at 800°C and 1000°C are available from the recent work of Smiths on the equilibrium of hydrogen-methane and carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide mixtures with gamma iron. Combining these with the diffusion studies of Wells and Mehl6 makes possible a quantitative test for this interstitial solid solution. The vapor-pressure determinations for zinc over brass by Hargreaves7 allowed the calculation of activities in this system over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations. Extensive investigation of diffusion in this substitutional solid solution has been carried out by Rhines and Mehl.8 ACTIVITIES IN BRASS9 If the vapor phase of zinc is assumed to behave as an ideal gas, any solid or liquid solutions that are in equilibrium with the same partial pressure of zinc at the same temperature have the same thermodynamic activity of zinc. In order to assign a numerical value to the activity azn, it is necessary to choose some standard reference state to which an activity value of unity is arbitrarily assigned. It is customary to choose the liquid or solid state of the pure material. Then azn is defined numerically by azn = Pza/Pzn° [I]

In most published discussions and theories of in situ combustion, the combustion fronts are assumed to be vertical. However, evidence from field tests leaves no doubt that combustion fronts often advance more rapidly along the top than near the bottom of a formation as a result of difference in density between injected air and formation liquids. The approximation proposed in this paper to determine the movement of the resultant tilted combustion surfaces states that the vertical rate of movement of combustion surfaces is proportional to the horizontal oxygen flux. Where self-ignition is possible, the proposed method demands that a secondary combustion surface exist around production wells which produce some oxygen. These secondary combustion surfaces may be formed long before the primary combustion surface can advance from injection to production wells. Heat liberated near production wells at these secondary combustion surfaces can contribute to an early increase in production rate. Results indicate that significant oil recoveries cannot be obtained from the usual flood patterns (five-spots, seven-spots, etc.) without producing large volumes of unused oxygen. Ideally, to increase oxygen- consumption efficiency, well patterns should allow oil production from a first line of production wells and gas production from more distant lines of producers. However, it may be desirable to produce some gas at all wells to support (and benefit from) active secondary combustion surfaces. Results indicate that the well spacing through which combustion can be advanced is larger than that predicted by other methods. A large number of production wells may still be desirable to take quick advantage of gravity drainage. From a comparison with results at South Belridge field, California, it appears that this method adequately describes oxygen concentration and temperature histories and combustion-front shapes. However, this method does not accurately locate the most advanced point of the combustion surface. There is some field evidence to substantiate the actual presence of secondary combustion surfaces at South Belridge. Use of the proposed method appears warranted at this time when lay-over of the combustion surface can be anticipated. INTRODUCTION The assumption of vertical combustion fronts has been embodied in all previous publicationsl-6 which use the movement of combustion fronts away from injection wells to determine the temperature and fluid distributions in the reservoir. The only paper concerned with a mathematical model of the combustion process in which a nonvertical combustion front is used was written by Gottfried.11 Actually, nonvertical combustion fronts have been observed in most in situ combustion field tests for which adequate data are available.7, 8, 6 In practice, the typical vertical extent of the burned zone decreases with distance from the injection well, and this burned zone is at or near the top of the sand body. In some cases, such as at South Belridge field near Taft, Calif., the combustion surface is almost horizontal over a very large area.8 Thus, for some years an obvious and serious gap has existed between theory (vertical fronts) and practice (tilted fronts). This is indicated in Fig. 1. Tilted combustion fronts such as observed at South Belridge8 sometimes result from the natural tendency of injected gases to rise to the top of an oil sand. An initially present gas cap, even if thin, would make apparent the effect of gravity segregation from the first, particularly since formations considered for in situ combustion field operations are generally selected for their

This discussion was prepared by members of the Phelps Dodge Corpn. staff who were designated to review the minutes. It is confidential but permission has been granted to distribute copies among those who attended the Conference. The minutes of the above conference contain numerous references to the plants and practices of Phelps Dodge Corporation. As many of these references are inaccurate, the following notes are made covering such points: Construction Magnesite Brick in Reverb. Arch (1) An.18" arch, 20 feet long, was built on one furnace with 5 feet on each side of magnesite brick, the center portion .being of silica brick. The furnace was put in operation February 13, 1930 and on April 23rd after 68.8 days' operation it was replaced due to failure of the silica brick forming the center of the arch. At this time, while the silica brick had completely gone, there was 14" of magnesite left. Bridgewall Tapping (2) Tapping matte through the burner wall was first tried at the Copper Queen Smelter in April, 1925. At that time, a copper casting with 1 ½ extra heavy pipes for water cooling cast in it, and having one taphole block was used. Later, on the other (old) furnaces, similar castings, but equipped with two tapholes, were used. We found with these furnaces that we could tap through the burner wall at the beginning of a campaign, but would subsequently have to go back to side wall tapping. This was the case until sometime in 1926. The new furnaces, that went in operation at the beginning of 1927, each had water. cooled castings with two tapholes. These have been used entirely and have been quite successful. Sometime after the furnaces were put into operation sidewall tapholes were put in, simply for the removal of any accumulation of matte that might be temporarily retained at the front end by bridges or dams in the furnace formed by overcharging locally.

THE Taka oil field is in the northern part of Titus and Franklin Counties, in north- eastern Texas. The small town of Talco, from which the field derives its name, is on the P. & Mt. P. R. R., about 15 mi. north of Mt. Pleasant, the county seat of Titus County. The oil field extends east and west from the town of Talco, the approximate center. In May, 1924, R. L. Cannon, while doing surface geology for the Humble. Oil & Refining Co., mapped the surface trace of this fault structure as evidenced by Upper Midway faulted down against Lower Midway. In the interval of sixteen years between the original surface work and the recent productive well completion, approximately eight wells were drilled into the Woodbine sand without success. Prior to 1907 nearly all coke was made in beehive ovens, and most of the gas produced was made in the old-style gas retorts, and while there were a few coke plants in southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia and Kentucky operating on high-volatile coals the proportion of the total product made by them was small and usually was used locally. The greater part of the coke made, and the coal gas produced, came from the Pittsburgh seam of western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, which was then regarded as the standard coking and gas coal of the country, and the best coal available anywhere for these purposes. With the advent of the byproduct oven and the building of coke plants at the furnaces, the restriction of the use of one grade of coal for making coke was removed and the use of mixtures of low-volatile and high-volatile coals began. The change in the locations of the coke plants removed the necessity of using Connellsville coal and also made sources of gas available to the public utilities other than of their own manufacture. Most of the first oven plants were built at points distant from the Connellsville region and this afforded an opportunity for the use of coals from the southern Appalachian fields, which were then at approximately equal distances from the ovens. Since that time development has been made on a number of seams of coal of great purity in southern West Virginia, southwestern Virginia and eastern Kentucky, which have been largely used for gas, cokemaking and metallurgical purposes where low amounts of ash, sulfur and phosphorus are determining factors. These coals are much lower in the objectionable elements than most of the coal shipped from the Pittsburgh seam, or than any northern coal, and when blended with low-volntile cod produce coke in byproduct ovens that is not excelled for any purpose by any coal mined in this country, and is equaled very seldom. Coal from several of these scams is shipped in great quantities without beneficlation and is lower in ash and sulfur than any but the best washed product from the Pittsburgh seam in the north. The writer has made a study of these coals to ascertain their relative qualities and the areas and reserves of coal available in each of them. No attention has been paid to the coals of Alabama, which do not compete with any of these coals, and no coal of equivalent quality is found in

The only way in which the difficult problems of classification of coal for the manufacture of by-product coke can be solved is to analyze them by the use of scientific data. It is very easy to adopt classifications for coal for the manufacture of by-product coke along certain lines; we can easily say that for a certain class of metallurgical operation coke made from bituminous coal must not contain more than so much sulfur or more than so much ash and should yield certain returns in the by-products, tar, ammonia, benzol, gas, etc. Those points we are fairly clear on and I think it is hardly worth while to discuss them because I presume that they are familiar to most of us who have any occasion either to make coke or to use it. But there is a field in the manufacture of coke which we know very little about. For example, we are operating a plant on a certain mixture of coal. Suddenly our blast-furnace man or the user of the coke tells us the coke is not as good as it was before. The coke is analyzed and the coal is analyzed. Everything seems to be about the same as it was— the ash is the same, there is no more sulfur, and so on—but the coke, for the use to which it is put, particularly in the blast furnace, is wrong. What happens? The management decide to try a slightly different coal mixture. They do not necessarily raise the total hydrocarbons, the volatile matter in the mixture, nor change the sulfur or the ash, but they do make a change which improves the value of the coke for metallurgical use. The reason for this difficulty, as I see it, is the " combustibility " of the coke—I hesitate to use the word, but it is the best one I have available. Combustibility of Coke We know now that the combustibility of coke is a very vital point in many metallurgical processes and I think one of the most notable instances of the proof of this is the experience of the Carnegie Steel Co. in the production of coke at its Clairton plant. PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company's smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of trans-ferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 114 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended oil the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack oil refractories.

ONE of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and. the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which. were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consumption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. SUBSTITUTES FOR PLATINUM During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and' comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper materials, and the other, the development of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit, of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since the more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

THE Geology Department of the University of British Columbia has undertaken the task of examining the ores from as many as possible of the gold mines of British Columbia. The object of this work is two- fold. First, it is known that detailed mineralographic studies are useful in attacking ore-dressing problems, and these studies are intended to be helpful to mill operators. Second, it is hoped that mineralogical and mineralographical studies will prove useful adjuncts to those of lithology and structure in throwing more light on problems related to the origin of the deposits. The paper shows that gold, for all practical purposes, is not present in an ore mineral in solid solution nor as a eutectic with any mineral; if the latter were true the gold particles would be distributed equally throughout that mineral. The gold occurs either as native gold or as a gold-silver telluride and is not distributed regularly through any mineral or minerals. The relationship between the gold or gold-bearing telluride and the associated minerals affords a means of classification that is not only simple but also appears to be directly related to the geological nature of the deposit, which may be summarized as follows: 1. Disseminated Gold Type.-Precious minerals in extremely small grains, which are distributed without regard to grain size, fractures or grain boundaries: (1) Hedley variety-gold in native form; (2) Surf Point variety-gold predominantly as telluride. 2. Veining Gold Type.-Precious minerals in grains of various sizes, which occur mainly along fractures and grain boundaries: (1) Cariboo gold quartz-goldin native form. (2) Waneta variety-gold as telluride. The variation ox the M, temperature with nitrogen concentration has been determined experinzentally. The free-energy difference between martensite and the parent y Phase at the M, temperature,is computed for Fe-C and Fe-N alloys using recent solubility data fm the Fe-N system and new data for the variatim of the activity of the interstitial solute in the y phase with concentration. The "geometric model" is considered also, and the importance of Zener ordering is noted. It is shown that, although at any chosen concentration the M, temperature and the activity are significantly different in the two alloy systems, the free-energy duference is the same within the limits of experimental error, thus Providing further evidence of the very close similarity between the martensite transformations in Fe-C and Fe-N alloys. TO estimate the free-energy change accompanying the martensite transformation in binary interstitial alloys it is necessary to know the variation of the Ms temperature with interstitial solute concentration and some thermodynamic data. To date, only the Fe-C system has been discussed because this was the only system for which relevant experimental measurements had been made, but even in this case the data available are insufficient to permit the free-energy change to be calculated without the assumption of a thermodynamic model for the y and a solid solutions. The last comprehensive discussion of the topic was by Kaufman, Radcliffe, and Cohen in 1.960.' Since that time Ellis, Davidson, and Bodsworth2 have redeter mined the activity of carbon in y iron as a function of carbon content and Atkinson3 has measured the activity of nitrogen in Fe-N austenite. The M, temperature of Fe-N is reported in the present paper. Thus, it is now possible to assess the free-energy change accompanying the martensite transformation in Fe-N alloys on the same basis as that used to assess the change in Fe-C alloys. This comparison is of interest because it has been shown recently4 that the structure of the martensite formed in Fe-N alloys changes with nitrogen content in a manner exactly parallel to the changes in structure in the Fe-C series and that the strain associated with the distortion of the iron lattice in either the y or the a phase by a nitrogen atom is the same as that produced by a carbon atom. The work to be described tests whether or not this close similarity between the two systems extends to the thermodynamics of the martensitic transformations. THE Ms TEMPERATURES FOR Fe-N MARTENSITE Bose and Hawkes5 found the M, temperature of a eutectoid Fe-N alloy (2.35 wt pct N) to be 35°C. This single determination appears to be the only reported measurement of the M, temperature of an Fe-N alloy. In the present work a series of more than fifteen different specimens containing between 0 and 2.7 wt pct N were prepared by controlled nitriding of pure iron wire 0.010 in. diam. The iron was supplied by B.I.S.R.A. and was designated ACN2. The nitriding procedure, all aspects of which are critical, has been described in detail elsewhere.' Each specimen was quenched from the austenitizing temperature into brine at 20°C without removing the specimen from the ammonia-hydrogen atmosphere in which it was ni-trided. Alloys containing up to 0.7 wt pct N were fully martensitic. More concentrated alloys contained progressively more retained austenite. At 2.34 wt pct N the specimen was completely austenitic after quenching to 20°C. The M, temperature of specimens with M, temperature above 20°C (those containing less than 2.35 wt pct N) was determined by a thermal arrest technique. For the more concentrated alloys (2.35 to 2.70 wt pct N) the variation of electrical resistance with temperature down to -196°C was used. Unlike Fe-C alloys, Fe-N alloys cannot be reaus-tenitized in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere because excessive loss of nitrogen occurs, even in short times, at high temperatures. Consequently, the alloys were reaustenitized in the ammonia-hydrogen mixture corresponding to nitrogen equilibrium at the temperatures used. The specimens were quenched in a blast of cold hydrogen gas and the temperature, measured by a thermocouple welded to the 2.5-in.-long specimen, was recorded on a high-speed recorder. In the first experiments 0.002-in.-diam chromel-alumel wire thermocouples were used but it was found that these gave erroneous readings due to contamination by nitrogen pickup. Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh wires of 0.002 in. diam were found to be satisfactory. Further details of the experiments are available in the original thesis.7 The cooling rate was controlled between 400° and 4000°C per sec by adjusting the hydrogen pressure. At least three cooling curves were obtained for each composition. Each specimen was analyzed for nitrogen after quenching. To aid in the accurate location of the martensite arrest points a series of cooling curves of 0.010-in.-diam platinum wire were recorded and these, which did not contain an arrest, were used as comparison standards. Four specimens, each in the form of a 3-in. loop, were prepared from each of the four alloys containing more than 2.35 wt pct N. One specimen was used for nitrogen analysis, one for X-ray diffraction, and two for resistance measurements below 20°C. The latter specimens were quenched from 20°C into constant-temperature baths at selected lower temperatures.

A detailed study of a number of methods of relative permea-abilitv measurement has been made in a search for the tech-niqrle most suited to routine analysis of cores taken from reservoir rock. It has been found from tests run on the same samples of core material by a number of techniques that the Penn State, Hassler, Hafford, and dispersed feed techniques all yield results which are felt to be reliable. Conditions under which the faster single core dynamic technique may be used are described. Further work on the calculation of relative permeabilities to oil from data obtained by the gas drive method is needed before this latter rapid method can be utilized. Correlations between theoretical studies and experimental results have been obtained in studies of the boundary effect. pressure distribution in two-phase flow, and gas expansion effects. Previous conclusions that the effects of the outflow boundary could be made negligibly small have been substantiated. Results of experimentally determined oil and gas pressure distributions along a core sample during flow are presented. Further studies of the effects of rate of flow in the measurement of relative permeability-saturation relations have shown that results are independent of the rate of flow as long as the flow rate is below the point where inertial effects commence. An analysis of the effects of a severalfold expansion of gas along the flow path indicates that while saturation gradients are induced in the test sample, the errors caused by this phenomenon in relative permeability measurements are small. INTRODUCTION Many pages of literature have been devoted to pointing out the need for relative permeability-saturation relations in reservoir engineering. One of the most attractive ways of obtaining this information is by the analysis of samples of core material taken from the formation in question, and again literature has described man); methods for obtaining these data. It is the purpose of this paper to present the work that has been done in the study of some of these published methods together with some other methods that have been recently developed in this laboratory. Also, a study of some of the factors that influence the laburatory determination of relative permeability-saturation relations is presented. FACTORS WHICH AFFECT LABORATORY STUDY OF FLUID FLOW THROUGH RESERVOIR ROCK To determine relative permeability-saturation relations of samples of reservoir rock in the laboratory, it is important to know what factors affect these measurements in order that the magnitude of these effects can be ascertained and steps then can be taken to eliminate or, in some cases, to minimize them. The factors that have been investigated are the boundary effect, the effect of gas expansion. and the rate effect. Boundary Effect In laboratory experiments in which two immiscible fluids are flowed through a porous medium, there exists a discontinuity of capillary properties at the outflow face. Any process which has for its object the preservation of iron and steel from rust, and which will make these metals more applicable than they now are to the requirements of mankind, will be sure to meet with attention from members of this association, and from all those who are either engaged in the extraction of the ore, its reduction to metal, or the subsequent application of the metal itself. It is, perhaps, not too much to say that when iron and steel are rendered secure against corrosion and decay, they will be used to an indefinitely greater extent than they now are. The whole realm of science has, therefore, been explored in the attempt to discover some method by which the formed article may be preserved, leaving its strength undiminished by the destructive action of rust. Paints, oils, varnishes, glazes, enamels, galvanizing, electro-depositing and what is called "inoxidizing" are among the many systems now in vogue to effect the preservation of iron and steel from the corrosive action of air and water. The object of this paper is to show what may he done in protecting iron and steel from rust by forming upon their surfaces a film of magnetic oxide by an inexpensive process. It is no new thing to be told that magnetic oxide of iron is unaffected by exposure to the atmosphere or to salt water for any length of time. The black sand of Taranaki, in New Zealand, is a sufficiently good example of this. Dr. Percy has pointed out that the reason why Russian sheet iron is less affected by exposure than ordinary sheet iron is because of a coating of magnetic oxide; but this was not known

Introduction In the U.S., about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacing these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal in unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still have a long way to go and costs are very high. Another option, which appears very attractive, is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form - coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corp. has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC), a wholly-owned subsidiary. Both coal-oil mixtures and coalwater mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality metallurgical coals. There are a number of incentives for potential users of coal slurry fuels and in particular for coal-water mixtures (CWMs). First, CWM represents an assured supply of fuel at a price predictable into future years. Second, CWM is available in the near term; there are no substantial advances in technology needed to provide coal slurry fuels commercially. Third, there is minimal new equipment required to accommodate CWM in the end-user's facility. Fourth, CWM is nearly as convenient to handle, store, and combust as is fuel oil. Several variants of CWM technology could be developed for different end-users in the future. One concept is to formulate slurry at the mine mouth in association with an integrated beneficiation process. This slurry fuel may be delivered to the end-user by any number of known conveyances such as barge, tank truck, and rail. Slurry fuel would then be stored on-site and used on demand in utility boilers, industrial boilers, and potentially for process heat needs or residential and commercial heating. An alternative approach is to formulate a low viscosity pre-slurry at the mine mouth and to pipeline it for a considerable distance, finishing up slurry formulation near the end-user's plant. Finally, at the other extreme of manufacturing alternatives, washed coal would be shipped to a CWM manufacturing plant just outside the end-user's gate. Depending on fuel specifications and locations of the mine and end-user facility, any of these alternatives may make economic sense. They are all achievable in the near term using existing technology or variants thereof. The Coal-Water Mixture CWMs contain a nominal 70 wt. % coal ground somewhat finer than the standard pulverized ("utility grind") coal grind suspended in water; a complex chemical additive system gives the desired CWM properties, making the suspension pumpable and preventing sedimentation and hardening over time. Figure 1 shows the difference between a sample of pulverized coal containing 30 wt. % moisture and a CWM of identical coal/water ratio. The coal sample behaves like sticky coal, while the CWM flows readily. The combustion energy of a CWM is 96-97% of that associated with the coal present, due to the penalty for vaporizing water in the CWM. Potentially any coal can be incorporated in the CWM, depending on the combustion performance required and the allowable cost. CWMs are usually formulated using high quality steam coals containing around 6% ash, 34% volatile matter, 0.8% sulfur, 1500°C (2730°F) initial deformation temperatures, and energy content of 25 GJ/t (21.5 million Btu per st). Additional beneficiation to the 3% ash level can be accomplished in an integrated process. There are a number of minimum requirements which a satisfactory CWM must meet: pumpability, stability, combustibility, and affordability. In addition, a CWM should be: resistant to extended shear, generally applicable to a wide variety of coals, forgiving/flexible, and compatible with the least expensive processing. It was found that a complex chemical additive package and control of particle size distribution are necessary to achieve these attributes simultaneously, while maximizing coal content in the slurry fuel. Formulation of Coal-Water Mixtures A major consideration in the manufacture, transportation, and utilization of a slurry fuel is its pumpability, or effective viscosity. Most CWM formulations are nonNewtonian, i.e., viscosity depends on the rate and/or duration of shear applied. Viscosities reported in this paper were obtained using a Brookfield viscometer fitted with a T-spindel and rotated at 30 rev/min, thus they are apparent viscosities measured at a shear rate of approximately 10 sec-1. The instrument does reproducibly generate a shear field if spindle size and rotation rate are held fixed. By observing the apparent viscosities of several slurries at fixed conditions it is possible to obtain a relative measure of their viscosities for comparison purposes. A true shear stress-shear rate relationship at the shear rates at which the CWM will be subjected in industry may be obtained using the Haake type and a capillary viscometer. These viscometers are used for specific applications. However, for comparison purposes, apparent viscosities are reported.

The early work of Terzaghi1 showed that the true stress state of a rock can be expressed by the principle of effective stress. This principle states that effective stress is equal to total applied stress minus the pore pressure. Since the introduction of this principle, a great effort has been made to measure the pore pressure of rocks so that the true stress state can be determined. For clean, permeable sandstones, it is usually found that the effective stress principle can easily be applied. Direct measurement of the pore pressure is achieved with a hydraulic pressure device and the effective stress state thereby computed. However, for fine-grained rocks which contain large amounts of clay (referred to herein as shales), pore pressure measurements are usually quite difficult because of the adsorptive forces of the clay platelets, which produce negative internal pressures. No suitable device is known for measuring internal pressures of dry shales; the effective stress approach is therefore not feasible and data are usually presented in another form. As an example, data from compressive strength tests are presented as a function of rock wetness, rather than effective confining stress. The work of Belopoloskii2 and Colback and Wiid3 are examples of such data. It was pointed out by Lambe and Whitman4 that a better way must be found to express the effective stress of argillaceous rocks. The information presented herein is an attempt to fill that need. Various authors have been able to measure moderate negative pore pressures (0-240 psi) within rather wet, argillaceous rocks by means of various pore pressure devices. In 1961 Lambe5 resented information which shows that pore pressures in argillaceous rocks are indeed negative ; he presented values of suction pressure as low as - 14 psi. Likewise,

INTRODUCTION There are important reasons for a discussion of tungsten resources, reserves, and production in the Circum-Pacific area. First, the world's chief tungsten deposits, as well as most of the world's tungsten reserves and production, occur in this region. It is well known that the world's largest tungsten reserves are located in southeastern China and that for many years, the largest individual mine in the world was there. Although China still has the world's greatest tungsten production, the very high-grade scheelite mine of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation in the Northwest Territories is the largest producer of tungsten today. There is certainly a great quantity of tungsten in Asia, but the strategic importance of this fact is now offset by the wide distribution of mines and production facilities throughout the world, especially in other parts of the Circum-Pacific area such as Australia, Canada, and the United States. In addition, much of the Circum-Pacific area is comprised of Mesozoic-Cenozoic orogenic belts. These global tectonic units are regarded as very favorable for additional tungsten deposits, particularly scheelite-bearing tactites, and consequently, prospecting and exploration will most likely be concentrated in the Circum-Pacific area. Second, tungsten must be regarded as one of the, most important metals of modern industry because of its very special properties. It has the highest melting point, the highest tensile strength at elevated temperatures, and the smallest compressibility of any metal. The metal also possesses a very high density, excellent corrosion resistance, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and a low coefficient of expansion. As a result, tungsten has found increasing importance in a wide range of industries. From the filament in an electric lamp, to cutting tools and drilling bits, to the exotic radiation shields that protect supersonic aircraft and spacecraft, tungsten plays an indispensable role in our daily lives. The primary objective of this paper is to present an overview of important facets of known and suspected tungsten in the Circum-Pacific area. Resources, reserves, current production, planned capacity expansions, and new operations, as well as an assessment of the probability for development of deposits in the Circum-Pacific area, are discussed. RESOURCES The average crustal abundance of tungsten has been estimated at 0.0015 kilograms per tonne. A comparison of the abundance of various metals in crustal rocks to that of tungsten is presented in Table 1, which shows that tungsten abundance is similar to that of its commonly associated metals, tin and molybdenum. AVERAGE CRUSTAL ABUNDANCE OF VARIOUS METALS (Grams per Tonne) [ ] With careful thought, it can be realized that tungsten ore deposits result from the concentration of the metal, through normal geologic processes, to levels substantially greater than its average crustal abundance. The minimum technologically and economically workable tungsten concentration, or cutoff grade, is a function of (1) deposit tonnage, (2) mining and milling methods, (3) production tonnage, (4) capital and operating costs, (5) tungsten market conditions, and (6) value of associated recoverable metals. The tungsten cutoff grade that is currently exploitable at a profit varies from 0.09% W03 to 1.55% W03, reflecting concentration factors from 470 to 8200, as shown in Table 2. Table 2.
