The behavior of particulate non-metallic materials in moving contact with smooth surfaces is of interest and concern to manufacturers and users of abrasives, of fillers, and of pigments alike. The theoretical aspects of the subject have been treated to considerable extent in the literature, and correlatic,ns are available that attempt to relate various methods of hardness determination." 2 The particle size and friability are characteristics of the abrasive that are not related to the smooth surface. The hardness, on the other hand, may be visualized as relative to that of the smooth surface. In a study of abrasive action, the role that hardness, per se, plays is a complicated one. For it is necessary to compare the "hardness" of the abrasive, usually a non-metallic, with that of the smooth surface, generally a metal. Hardness of non-metallics is defined as resistance to scratch and is almost universally described with respect to the Mohs scale.3 Minerals have been rated by Mohs numerically from the softest (talc = 1) to the hardest (diamond = 10). By definition, a mineral has a designated hardness when it is scratched by the standard that is numerically just above it on the scale; and conversely, when it scratches the standard that is just below it. Hardness of metals. however.. implies resistance to indentation, a property that has been measured by a number of methods. In fact, the indentation hardnesses of the standard minerals on the hlohs scale have been determined by the Rockwell tester. Reproduced below are two versions of this correlation. 'A conversion chart, prepared by Wilson Mechanical Instruments Division of American Chain and Cable Co., merely gives the conversion from Rockwell to Knoop hardness. The relation between Knoop indentation hardness and Mohs scale has been reported by G. S. Smith — A New Scale of Hardness, The Engineer, Aug. 26. 1949. G. F. Kinney in Engineerin Properties and Aplications of Plastics reports the Rockwell hardness of the minerals directly in the Mohs scale. The relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined. Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heat,ing at 200" C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300" C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500" C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950" C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. Material and Method The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent, copper plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to 1/4 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100" C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to . boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched. Results Data from the tests are shown in the table and plot (see Fig. 1); conductivity is referred to the International Annealed Copper Standard at 20" C. Conductivity hard is considerably less than conductivity soft.1 The increase is sharp when the wire anneals. The maximum, 101.15 per cent, in the particular material used, comes at 500º C.; thereafter the conductivity falls to 100.53 per cent. after 950" C. annealing, a drop of 0.62 per cent.

A new method is described for the production of cold-bonded pellets using a hydraulic binder, such as portland cement. Large-scale pilot-plant tests have proved that self-fluxing pellets of high reducibility and good handling strength can be made by the method. Blast-furnace trials have shown that the pellets are an acceptable burden material, comparable with self-fluxing sinter or heat-hardened pellets. Economic factors of commercial-scale production are discussed. The Grangcold Pellet Process—for which patents have been applied or already granted in a number of coun-tries—uses a hydraulic adhesive such as portland cement, slag cements, pozzolanic cements, etc., for the production of cold-bonded pellets. The idea of using a hydraulic binder for the agglomeration of iron-ore fines is not new. Portland cement was proposed as an adhesive for cold-bonded iron-ore briquettes in patents granted more than 50 years ago.' In a report on the briquetting of iron-ore fines, published in Stahl und Eisen in 1959; it is stated that briquettes bonded with portland cement are used on a small scale at an ironwork in Germany. According to the report, the briquettes showed excellent strength in the blast furnace although their general use was made impossible because they required a long hardening time, during which they are sticky, soft, and difficult to store and handle. The Grangcold Pellet Process has overcome this particular disadvantage by mixing the balls with a suitable amount of the balling concentrate before storing them. The pellets are embedded in the concentrated during storing in such a way that they are isolated from each other and thus prevented from sticking together to form clusters. Thanks to the embedding concentrate, the pellets are subjected to a more or less uniform pressure from all sides which does not deform them. Thus, the mixture can be stored in a stockpile or in a bin until the pellets have hardened sufficiently. The concentrate is separated from the pellets by means of screening. The concentrate is returned to the balling operation and the pellets are either shipped to the blast furnace or stored for final hardening. The binder preferred for the Grangcold Pellett Process is portland-cement clinker, ground without the admixture of gypsum in order to avoid sulfur in the pellets as far as possible. Usually a 10% binder content is used. Two-thirds of the portland-cement clinker consist of lime and the rest is silica, alumina, and ferric oxide. Thus, self-fluxing or overbasic pellets are produced with this binder if the amount of silica in the concentrate used does not exceed 4%. The Grangcold Pellet Process was developed by the mineral Processing Laboratory of the Granges Co. Work started in 1963 with batch-scale tests. In 1966, a small pilot plant was put into operation in which 1800 tons of pellets were produced using 10% of rapid-hardening portland cement as a binder. Favorable results from a blast-furnace test with this batch led to the decision to erect a larger pilot plant which went into production in the summer of 1967. Since then, approximately 100,000 tons of cold-bonded pellets have been produced, mostly with 10% gypsum-free portland cement as a binder. Several full-scale blast-furnace trials have been performed with the pellets. The results of the trials indicate that the Grangcold pellets constitute a satisfactory blast-furnace feed. An industrial plant for the production of Grangcold pellets with a rated capacity of 1.5 million tpy is now under construction at the Granges Co.'s mine at Grangesberg. The plant will come into operation in the summer of 1970. Results from Laboratory Work Pellets made from iron-ore concentrate bonded with portland cement harden slowly and their handling is very critical until they have hardened enough to loose their stickiness. It is therefore especially important to study the progress of the hardening action and the factors influencing it. This is best achieved by investigating the relationship between the compressive strength of the cement-bonded pellets and the curing time under varied conditions. These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The increase of strength and hardness from the core to the skin is readily explained by the observation that, in addition to the stretching, the layers of a rod or wire are sheared more the closer they are to the surface.1,6-8 However, the presence of a soft surface layer can be attributed only to an annealing effect. A CLEAR understanding of the factors that deter-mine the consumption of zinc metal is essential to a proper survey of the future of the industry and the relation of the several producing districts. With a view of explaining a sound basis for the consider-ation of some of the problems facing the zinc-mining industry of the Oklahoma-Kansas and Missouri district some of these factors are here set out. The zinc industry of the United States furnishes metal for three major uses, viz.: (1) zinking iron and steel (galvanizing); (2) brass making; (3) sheet rolling. Other important uses are for lead desilverization, the manufacture of castings, including die castings, and the manufacture of zinc oxide by the French process, which consists in burning spelter. The use of zinc for galvanizing comprises the coating of sheets, tubes, wire and shaped products, the latter ranging from chains to buckets. The brass-making industry may be sub-divided into manufacture of red brass, yellow brass and white brass, the percentage of zinc in these products being roughly 30, 40 and 80 respectively. The use of white brass is relatively a new thing and it may attain considerable proportions as a substitute for yellow brass. The volumetric behavior of five mixtures of black oil and natural gas and of two mixtures of condensate and natural gas from a field in the San Joaquin Valley was experimentally established. This work was carried out at roo°, I9o° and 250°F in the pressure interval between 400 and 5000 psi. The viscosity of the liquid phase of four mixtures of black oil and natural gas was experimentally measured in the above-indicated temperature and pressure intervals. The effect of methane upon the precipitation of bitumen from the black oil was studied at 230°F. Introduction The solution of a number of the economical and technological problems which arise in connection with petroleum production is dependent upon the availability of the necessary quantitative information covering the materials involved. This requires data concerning physical properties of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures at the pressures and temperatures characteristic of underground petroleum reservoirs. The experimental determination of the desired data for each situation encountered is relatively time-consuming. However, it is considered to yield results sufficiently more reliable than those obtained from correlations to justify the effort. For these reasons there was undertaken a laboratory investigation of the viscosity of the liquid phase and the volu- metric and phase behavior of mixtures of oil and gas samples obtained from wells in a field located in the San Joaquin Valley. Terminology The nomenclature of petroleum engineering is not at present entirely standardized. Many commonly used technical terms are not everywhere given the same meanings. For the purposes of this paper the following definitions will be adopted: Black oil refers to the dark-colored, hydrocarbon liquid obtained when the producing horizon of the well lies partly in the condensed hydrocarbon phase of the reservoir. Condensate is the term applied to the relatively volatile, pale yellow or amber-colored hydrocarbon liquid that is often obtained from the surface separator system when the producing horizon of the well lies in the gas cap of the reservoir. The gas obtained from the surface separator system is called natural gas regardless of whether the well is producing black oil or condensate. As might be expected from the multi-component character of naturally occurring hydrocarbon materials, the compositions of black oil, condensate and natural gas are subject to considerable variation depending upon the temperatures and pressures prevailing in the surface separator system as well as upon the overall composition of the material produced from the reservoir. INTRODUCTION The Philippines is endowed with mineral resources, much of which still remains unexploited. The country's known reserves, at least for the major mineral commodities, have increased every decade since the first major discoveries more than 80 years ago. Mining, therefore, naturally evolved as one of the pioneer industries and has ever since been a major factor in economic development. The Philippines has entered a new era in mineral resources development and management. One significant feature of this era is the degree to which the government is involved with the industry. In recent years, the state has increasingly encouraged the private sector to carry out detailed exploration aided by governmental contributions through extensive geological and geophysical surveys, fundamental researches and even indirect financial assistance in some specific areas. Significant changes in mineral resources development policies were brought about with the promulgation of Presidential Decree 463 or the Mineral Resources Development Decree of 1974. The Decree provides for a more rational system of administration and disposition of mineral lands to promote mineral resource exploration and exploitation. Various forms of incentives are provided. Foreign entities are allowed to participate in development through service contracts with leaseholders or with the government in the case of reserved areas. The thrust in mineral resources development has been focused on the base metals which as envisioned would provide the foundation for sound economic development. In recent years, however, major strides have been made to promote the exploitation of the non-traditionally produced commodities especially the non-metals. Development likewise point to the growing determination of the government and the private sector to expand benefits from mining. This is evident in efforts to promote downstream processing operations and to encourage investments in exploration, exploitation and mineral processing ventures. The integrated mineral resources development plan, therefore, proposes the vertical integration of mining extraction activities with the processing requirements of the metal-based manufacturing industries. While mining activities shall continue to be carved out by the private sector, the government shall influence the industry's direction by establishing legitimate goals to maximize benefits through an integrated approach giving due consideration to environmental protection and resource needs of future generations. STATUS OF MINERAL RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT Extent of Exploration Application of modem exploration tools and concepts complemented by intense infusion of foreign technology and rapid development of indigenous expertise have enabled the government jointly with the private sector to geologically explore vast grounds and to expand the country's known mineral resources. Approximately 93% of the country's total land area of 30 million hectares have been geologically mapped on at least 1:250,000 scale. Of the 93% total coverage, roughly 37.54% or 11.07 million hectares have been done on scales of 1:10,000 to 1:50,000 as shown in Figure I. Only 3.07% of the total coverage have been surveyed in detail. Land gravity surveys have been undertaken on over 45% of the total, while some 77,300 line km. of aeromagnetic surveys have been flown over 110,000 sq. km. of land area. Processing of data is almost complete. Total magnetic intensity and IGRF-corrected maps are available. Geological interpretation utilizing Landsat MSS imagery and low altitude aerial photography augmented by ground truthing have been undertaken in several large areas with very encouraging results. Beach and offshore mineral surveys were initiated in 1977 and have covered substantial areas in northwest and southeast Luzon and northeastern Mindanao. Highly promising areas for detrital magnetite, chromite, gold and some heavy minerals including ilmenite and titanium have been identified. In the petroleum sector, two offshore oilfields are currently producing from Miocene limestone reefs in Northwestern Palawan. Another field from the same area will be on stream in mid-1982.

THE Industrial Minerals Division this year held no individual sessions of its own except the business meeting Tuesday afternoon. One session was held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists, one with the Milling Methods Committee, and two with the Society of Economic Geologists and the Mining Geology Committee. At all of these meetings the attendance was better than usual and the Tuesday afternoon session, with nearly 400 present, probably set a new record for the Division. Joint sessions seem extremely popular when papers of mutual interest are presented. On Monday afternoon, mica was the predominating subject. The North Carolina mines provided most of the information presented, although the discussion brought out similarities with the New England mines. B. C. Burgess particularly stressed the fact that with the existing curtailment of mica from India it is necessary to get the most mica in the shortest time from the mines in this country. He said that the Colonial Mica Corp. hopes to have 1000 mines operating in the near future. This seems a great number, but when one considers that these mines employ from 3 to 28 men, mostly nearer the low figure, the output of each mine is relatively small. Although the price of mica is from six to ten times the prewar price, the yield of 8 to 150 lb. of mica per ton of raw ore does not provide high returns to the producer.

In his paper Mr. Braley makes no mention of the bacteriological aspects of the problem. It is now quite well established that certain bacteria play a major role in formation of acid mine waters, and it is a simple matter in the laboratory to show that under sterile conditions the rate of acid production from a pyrites suspension is only about one quarter of that obtained from a similar suspension inoculated with drainage from a mine producing an acidic pit water. Under sterile conditions the oxidation is due to direct chemical action and, from the evidence just given and from much other evidence, this increase under nonsterile conditions is due to certain bacteria. Experiments recently completed, and shortly to be published, have shown that this bacteriological oxidation can be prevented by the maintenance of pH conditions above 4. It was found that to raise this pH above 4 at the beginning of the experiments was not sufficient but that, due to the continuing chemical oxidation, alkali had to be added daily to maintain the pH conditions above 4. The amount of alkali added, however, over a fixed period, was only about one quarter of the alkaline equivalent of the acid produced when pH conditions were not controlled over an equal period. The opinion expressed by Mr. Braley that sodium hydroxide has little or no effect on the rate of oxidation of pyrites is not substantiated by the above experiments. The writer does not claim that these results show a practical solution to the problems, especially in abandoned workings, but feels that the application of an alkaline coating, such as lime wash, to exposed accessible workings might be well worth trying. S. A. Braley (author's reply)—In 1919 Powell and Parrl suggested that bacteria, or some catalytic agent, hastened the oxidation of pyritic or marcastic sulfur in coal. Carpenter and Herndon (1933)' attributed the action of Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Colmer and Hinkle (1947)3 observed an organism similar to T. thiooxidans and another organism that oxidized iron. Leathen and Braley 9rst discovered this organism in 1947 in a sample of water from the overflow of the Bradenville mine (Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania). They characterized the organism in 1954" and gave it the name Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans. Although Temple and Colmer (1951)' had suggested the name Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, since they claimed it oxidized both ferrous iron and thiosulfate, we have found that pure cultures of the organism do not oxidize thiosulfate, hence the name F. ferrooxidans. In 1955 Ashmead7 isolated an organism, similar to the one called Thiobacillus ferrooxidans by Temple and Hinkle, from acid mine water in Scotland. It is probable that this organism was F. ferrooxidans. In 1954 Bryner, Beck, Davis, and Wilsonh reported microorganisms in effluents from copper mine refuse. These organisms appeared to be similar but were not in pure culture. In view of this history of bacterial investigation of acid mine water and our own ten years of experience, we do not agree with Mr. Ashmead that bacteria play a major role in acid formation. We do not find that any of these bacteria will directly oxidize pyritic material. They do, however, augment the chemical formation of sulfuric acid by atmospheric oxidation. In two papers in 1953% eathen, Braley, and McIntyre discuss the role of bacteria in acid formation and postulate the mechanism through which they operate. Mr. Ashmead in his discussion of my paper has assumed that this work was carried on in the presence of acid mine water in which bacteria would be present. This was not the case. Strictly sterile conditions were not maintained, but the organisms present in mine drainages were definitely absent in these experiments. We believe that we have demonstrated that alkalis do not inhibit the chemical oxidation of pyritic material. This is also indicated by Mr. Ashmead's discussion in which he says that alkali must be added daily due to the continuing chemical oxidation. It is interesting to note that Mr. Ashmead finds that maintenance of pH above 4.00 decreases the activity of the bacteria. We have found also that a decrease in pH below 2.8 also inhibits its activity. Table XIII of published data'" illustrates the decrease in activity with increased acidity, although pH values are not given. These values are in comparison with uninoculated controls and show the marked increase in acidity up to 22 weeks but a decline at 29 weeks, at which time the experiment was terminated. It is probable that after a longer period only chemical oxidation would have continued. From our studiesv we have postulated that the iron oxidizing bacterium (Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans) oxidizes the ferrous iron, resulting from chemical oxidation, to ferric iron. The ferric iron then aids the atmospheric oxidation of the sulfuritic material and is itself reduced to ferrous iron, which in turn acts as food for the autotrophic bacteria. Study of the physiologic properties of F. ferrooxidans shows that its preferred pH is about 3.00 and its activity decreases with variation in either direction. It is extremely inactive above pH 4.00 and below 2.5. This inactivity above 4.00 is indicated by Mr. Ashmead's observations. These properties of F. ferrooxidans then correlate perfectly with our hypothesis. Ferrous iron is oxidized very slowly by atmospheric oxygen in highly acid sohtion and since the bacteria become inactive, acid is formed only by atmospheric oxidation. At a pH of 4.00 or above iron is more readily oxidized by atmospheric oxygen, but the bacterial activity is decreased. However, with a pH above 4.00 the ferric iron is removed from the field of activity since its soluble sulfate hy-drolyzes and precipitates the iron as ferric hydroxide or a basic sulfate. As we have shown in the paper under discussion, the alkali does not inhibit the chemical oxidation, and thus the acid formation continues. This

THESE ores occur in the Laurentian rocks in the town of Clifton, St. Lawrence County, New York. The Clifton Mining Company have opened these magnetites upon their estate of 23,000 acres, on the waters of the Grasse River, an affluent of the St. Lawrence, which flows for about nine miles across the estate, exposing a section of the formation, and affording ample water-power at numerous points. In approaching this district from De Kalb Junction, upon the Watertown and Ogdensburg Railway, the observer passes from the zone of the specular ores, which abound to a great extent in Jefferson County, across a belt of non-metal-liferous limestones, continuing for some miles intermingled with metamorphic rocks, and gradually giving place to heavy beds of granitic and porphyritic gneiss, the weathered surfaces of which present a gray and rough appearance, from the washing out of the feldspar; leaving the quartz very prominent, and completely disguising the real character of the rock, which, when freshly broken, has a lively reddish appearance from the predominance of flesh-colored and red feldspar. Beds of fine-grained quartzite appear also intercalated in the granitic gneiss. These are the dominating rocks of the magnetite region, but the magnetite is always found, so far as the speaker's observation extended, associated with beds of calcite, carrying hornblende, black and green, biotite, and brown garnet interspersed with yellow and magnetic pyrites. The strike of these rocks is about northeast, and their dip about 40° to 45° southeast.

As in preceding years, the most intensive drilling activity during 1934 took place in the old fields of the western part of the Polish Carpathian petroleum province (district of Jaslo). The number of wells completed to the end of 1934, expressed in percentages, is as follows: Jaslo district, 57 per cent; oil fields outside Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica, 27; Stanislawow district 8 and Boryslaw fields only 7 per cent. The number of meters drilled (Table 2), expressed in percentages, for the same fields are as follows: Jaslo district, 51 per cent; oil fields outside Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica, 26; Stanislawow district, 12, and Boryslaw oil fields, 11 per cent. The Board of Directors, at its meeting on March 22, 1918, extended an invitation to the American .Institute of Metals to become the Institute of Metals Division of-the American Institute of Mining Engineers in accordance with the terms of By-Law VII. This invitation was presented to the membership of the American Institute of Metals for letter ballot, and, at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers on April 26 191 ,it-was reported that the replies had been in favor of accepting the invitation. The mechanism and rate of reduction of FeO at conditions similar to those in the stack of a blast furnace have been determined for temperatures from 980" to 1165°C. Preliminary studies of the reduction of Fe2O3 with activated coconut charcoal in a static system (no flow of reducing gas) have shown that the CO2-CO ratio of the product gas depends upon the relative reactivities of the Fe2O3 and charcoal. In a systern with a "hot blast" of CO and Nz (simitar to dry bosh gas), synthetic FeO, and actiuated coconut charcoal, the rate of reduction was not sensitive to the flow of reducing gas, and the rate-controlling step alas the chemical reaction at the metal-oxide interface. Wherz solid carbon was not present, a critical flow rate of reducing- gas had to be met in order to prevent a lowering of the reduction rate. The effect of a less-reactive carbon (blast-jurnace coke) and of a "natural" FeO on the mechanistn and rate, and the mininum amount of carbon necessary in the charge to tnaintain the reducing potential of the gas phase, have been determined. THE importance of iron oxide reduction processes has encouraged many studies of the process reaction kinetics. Despite this, the mechanism is not well-understood and three main theories have evolved, which can be stated as follows: A) the rate-controlling step is diffusion, either gaseous diffusion of the reductant or product gas through a porous solid,' or solid-state diffusion of iron and oxygen atoms through the so1id.2 B) The slow step is diffusion of reducing gas through a stagnant boundary layer. C) The reaction rate is controlled by the chemical reaction occurring at the metal-oxide interface and is proportional to the area of this interface.3 By increasing the velocity of the reducing gas to a flow rate beyond which no increase in the reduction rate is observed, critical flow rate, it may be possible to eliminate B as the slow step. However, as warnere points out, the establishment of a critical flow rate may only assure that the reaction is not limited by a reduction in the reducing potential of the gas and that B may still be the rate-determining step. Edstrom and Bitsianes and Seth and Ross8 show that A and C may both be correct for the reduction of the same oxide, depending upon the stage of the reduction, and that the relative importance of the two mechanisms varies with the porosity of the oxide. Themelis9 has derived expressions which express A, B, and C in terms of the fraction reduction, Rx, of a spherical particle. Thus, in the case of A a plot of In (1 - Rx) vs time must be linear and the time to reach a given reduction is proportional to the square of the particle diameter. For B a plot of (1 - Rx) vs must be linear and the time to reach a given reduction is proportional to the square of the diameter. For C a plot of 1 - (1 - RX)1/3 vs f must be linear and the time to reach a given degree of reduction should be proportional to the diameter. In the case of mixad controlled reactions, none of the plots are linear over their entire length. The results of previous studies, in which the rates of gaseous reduction of iron oxide were measured in the absence of carbon, may not correspond to blastfurnace practice because they ignore the effects of the Boudouard reaction. CO2 +C — 2CO The presence of carbon may alter the mechanism or the rate of iron oxide reduction through an enrichment of the gas phase by Eq. [1]. In this case, the presence of and reactivity of carbon become important. If the Boudouard reaction has no effect on the rate of reduction, the reducing gas could be supplied by some means other than the gasification of carbon at the tuyeres and carbon could, theoretically, be eliminated from the burden. Preliminary studies of the reduction of Fe2O3 with activated coconut charcoal were made to determine if the reactivity (surface area) of the Fe2O3 had any effect on the product gas composition. Two size fractions of Fe2O3 were reduced with charcoal in a static system (no flow of reducing gas). In each case the charcoal was -100 + 325 mesh and was 25 pct of the total charge. One fraction of the reagent-grade Fe2O3 was submicron in diameter. The other fraction was -100 + 200 mesh and was prepared from the former by compacting, sintering at 1300°C, crushing, and screening. In each experiment, the reaction vessel was filled with a mixture of CO and CO, which would be in equilibrium with FeO and iron at the reaction temperature. A furnace was heated to the desired temperature, the vessel was placed in the furnace, and the gaseous products of the reaction were collected and analyzed. The results of these experiments, Fig. 1, show that the gas phase associated with the submicron oxide is more oxidizing than that with the -100 + 200 mesh oxide. Therefore, in a static system, the relative rates of the reduction reaction and the gasification of carbon depend upon the reactivities of the Fe2O3 and charcoal. The reduction of FeO to iron is the most important reaction occurring in the blast furnace and is probably the slowest of the several reduction steps. The one hundred and twentieth meeting of the Institute was held at Chicago, Sept. 22 to 26, inclusive, and was in every way success although the steel strike against the United States Steel Corpn. prevented many engineers from attending the steel session and made necessary the annulment of the trip to the steel works at Gary on Tuesday. All of the meetings were held at the Congress Hotel, with the excep-tion of the session on Non-ferrous Metallurgy which was held at the Coliseum where the Fifth National Exposition of Chemical Industries was in progress. This session was a joint one with the American Electro-chemical Society. The total attendance, as shown by the registration, was 850.

THESE ores occur in the Laurentian rocks in the town of Clifton, St. Lawrence County, New York. The Clifton Mining Company have opened these magnetites upon their estate of 23,000 acres, on the waters of the Grasse River, an affluent of the St. Lawrence, which flows for about nine milt",3 across the estate, exposing a section of the formation, and affording ample water-power at numerous points. In approaching this district from De Kalb Junction, upon the Watertown and Ogdensburg Railway, the observer passes from the zone of the specular ores, which abound to a great extent in Jefferson County, across a belt of non-metal-liferous limestones, continuing for some miles intermingled with metamorphic rocks, and gradually giving place to heavy beds of granitic and porphyritic gneiss, the weathered surfaces of which present a gray and rough appearance, from the washing out of the feldspar; leaving the quartz very prominent, and completely disguising the real character of the rock, which, when freshly broken, has a lively reddish appearance from the predominance of flesh-colored and red feldspar. Beds of fine-grained quartzite appear also intercalated in the granitic gneiss. These are the dominating rocks of the magnetite region, but the magnetite is always found, so far as the speaker's observation extended, associated with beds of calcite, carrying hornblende, black and green, biotite, and brown garnet interspersed with yellow and magnetic pyrites. The strike of these rocks is about northeast, and their dip about 40' to 45' southeast

NOT only has the demonstration of progress in all fields of science been characteristic of the Chicago "Century of Progress," but the manner in which the fundamentals of these sciences have been displayed captivated the visitor's eye and ear at the same time. The average individual is interested most in progress which concerns his every-day life. He is fairly well educated in medicine, biology and certain aspects of physics. But how raw materials and chiefly minerals occur, how they are located, taken out of the ground and refined, is something which appears to be more remote from the every-day line of interest, and about which, therefore, the public knows comparatively little. This is particularly true of the oil industry, although it ranks in size second only to agriculture in the United States. In appreciation of the tremendous educational value which a complete exhibit on all phases of the mineral industries would have, both mining and metallurgical as well as oil inter¬ests took steps early to make these exhibits at Chicago a reality. The board of directors of the A. I. M. E. authorized an advisory committee to the Museum of Science and Industry early in 1932. It is divided into four subcommittees - for geology and petroleum, for metal mining, for coal mining, and for metallurgy respectively. The entire committee held its first meeting in Chicago on April 11 and 12, 1932, to advise with the Museum's officials and experts about the most advantageous arrangement of the minerals industries' and geology exhibits.
