IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps.

The steady-state creep behaviov of zirconium and zivcaloy-2 was examined in the temperature vatlge 520° to 620°C A1 low stresses the creep rates were cimracterized by a linear stress dependence; at highev stresses the stress dependence was much more pronounced. Temnperature-cycling tests yielded values for the aclivation enevgy for creep. Various tlzeories were examined in the ligltt of- the experimental re-sults and it mas concluded that the low-stress creep behavior is the result of the stress-direcled diffusion of vacancies along gain boundaries. It has been observed,"&apos; usually under conditions of high temperature and low stress, that creep deformation can occur for which the steady-state creep rate is linearly dependent on the applied stress. For magnesium and certain magnesium alloys, Harris and ones&apos; and ones&apos; have argued that this type of creep occurs by mass transfer as a result of the stress-induced generation and migration of vacancies, along a gradient defined by the stress direction. Jones&apos; demonstrated that the rate-controlling diffusion path is sensitive to grain size and temperature, and that by suitable control of these variables creep could occur by vacancy diffusion either predominately along grain boundaries or through the lattice. Recently, Jones3 suggested from an examination of limited high-stress data for zircaloy-2, composition in Table I, that significant diffusion creep could occur at low stresses, at least between 375" and 500°C, controlled by grain boundary vacancy diffusion. This process could have an important implication in assessing the role of zirconium alloys as a structural or cladding material in certain classes of nuclear reactors, since it predicts creep deformation far in excess of any estimates based on extrapolating slip creep data from higher stress levels. If the diffusion creep process occurs it should be possible to describe the total steady-state creep rate of zirconium and its alloys as the sum of two terms, Eq. [I]; the first term relates to a slip creep process important at high stresses and which is manifested by a much more pronounced dependence of creep rate on stress4 than diffusion creep and the second to a process controlled by mass transfer,5&apos;6 dominant at low stresses: where A and BI are parameters which can depend on structure, Ql and Q2 are the activation energies for the particular creep process occurring, and n describes the sensitivity of the creep rate on stress. It is the purpose of this paper to present some direct experimental evidence in support of this view. It is recognized that other analytical approaches have been proposed to explain data of this kind and these will also be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Flat creep specimens (gage length 1 by 0.25 by 0.02 in. approx) were prepared from cold-rolled, argon-remelted, crystal bar zirconium and cold-rolled commercial-grade zircaloy-2, the analyses of which are given in Table I. The specimens were annealed at a pressure of < 10-5 Torr at temperatures from 625" to 675°C for 2 hr and slow-cooled. This treatment produced stable grains of average size (defined here by the average linear intercept) of for zirconium and -4xin. (-10 p) for zircaloy-2. The specimens were tested in a dead load tensile creep rig. The stress was maintained constant by adjusting the applied load after approximately each 1 pct of strain. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than +1°C. This system had a small thermal lag, so that rapid temperature changes were possible. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Derr and George D. Barron. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

Reduction of Si from slag to carbon-saturated iron is a very slow reaction. The rate is nearly independent of stirring but is accelerated markedly by increased temperature. In a slag containing 45 pct SiO2, 38 pct CaO, 17 pct Al2O3, the energy of activation is approximately 130 kcal. AT temperatures of 1450" to 1600°C occurring in the hearth of the iron blast furnace, chemical reactions are normally expected to proceed with great rapidity. Many of the reactions of iron making are indeed quite rapid and attain a condition corresponding roughly to a state of equilibrium before metal and slag are tapped from the furnace. The one conspicuous exception is the reaction by which carbon in the coke or metal reacts with silica in the slag to deliver silicon to the metal. From the practical viewpoint the slowness of this reaction is indeed fortunate, for if it were fast enough to reach equilibrium during the time of contact, it would be difficult to produce pig iron of the desired low silicon content. The one other reaction which under certain circumstances can also be very slow is the transfer of sulfur from blast-furnace metal to slag. In their laboratory exeriments on this reaction, Hatch and Chipman found that at least 5 hr were required for the attainment of equilibrium in a small crucible and that the reaction was not accelerated by increasing the rate of stirring. Subsequently it was shown2 that the presence of a reducible oxide MnO greatly inhibited sulfur removal, and finally that SiO2 itself3 under some conditions has sufficient oxidizing Dower to interfere with sulfur transfer. The kinetics of sulfur removal are now rather well understood,4 and it has been shown3,5 that when the silicon content of the metal is high enough to prevent reduction of SiO,, the desulfurizing process is rapid. Thus the observations of slow removal of sulfur are associated with the coincident slow reduction of SiO2, a process which transfers both silicon and oxygen to the metal phase. It is, of course, the oxygen which interferes with sulfur removal. An explanation of the slowness of the silica reduction reaction has not been obtained. The sulfur transfer process has been shown by the authors5 to be at least partially transport-controlled in the absence of interference by silica. Under the experimental conditions. 99 pct of the total transfer at 1600" was accomplished within an hour. Under similar conditions the reduction of silica may not proceed half-way to equilibrium6 in 8 hr. It is scarcely imaginable that silica reduction could be transport-controlled when the slag contains 44 pct SiO2 and the metal about 1.4 pct C. The experiments reported here show definitely that it is controlled by a slow step or steps in the chemical reaction. One might expect to find such a slow step in the breaking of SiO bonds or in the slow removal of oxygen by carbon at the slag-metal or metal-crucible interface or by bubble formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure used in this investigation was similar to that used in the study of the kinetics of desulfurization.5 A sketch of the graphite crucible and stirrer used in the current work is shown in Fig. 1. The quantity of metal and slag used was adjusted so that the slag-metal interface was located between the top and bottom blades on the stirrer; the top of the slag layer was above the top blade. The stirrer shaft was hollow down to the metal level and served as thermocouple well or optical pyrometer target. Stirring speeds of 0 to 500 rpm were used. A carbon monoxide atmosphere was maintained in the furnace by flushing the gas over the slag surface, except in run No. 220 when it was bubbled

Sputtered aluminum thin films were prepared in each of two conventional bell-jar vacuum systems. One system utilized an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure; the second system was a standard diode sputterirlg arrangement. Consistent and repeatable film properties were obtained in both systems provided sufficient cleanup and presputter time was allowed. The various problems associated with aluminum sputtering are discussed, with pavticular attention to the vzinimization of film contamination by outgassing and oxidation. The growth and structure of the aluminum thin films were studied with the aid of electron wzicroscopy and related to deposition rate, substrate temperature, and film thickness. The resistivity of the films was correlated to film structure and surface roughness. Resistiuities as low as 3.5 microhm-cm (2.3 x bulk resistiuity) were measured for relatively thick films (20,000). THIS investigation was undertaken to explore the problems and film characteristics associated with the sputtering of aluminum. Earlier work reported on aluminum sputtering has stressed the contamination of both the cathode and film as well as abnormally low deposition rates.&apos; Data on sputtering yields,3 however, indicate that aluminum sputtering could be practical. Recently, it was shown by Theuerer and Hauser3 that aluminum sputtering was feasible in a conventional oil-diffusion pumped vacuum system provided an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure was employed to minimize gaseous contamination. This technique employs the getter action of aluminum to produce extremely low reactive gas partial pressures in the deposition zone. Aluminum films have already found use in solid-state electronic devices such as transistors and integrated microcircuits. To the present time, most aluminum films have been prepared by evaporation due to the ease with which this metal can be evaporated. Controlled sputtering of aluminum offers a number of advantages over evaporation, however, such as 1) manufacturing compatibility with other metals which must be sputtered, 2) better control of process variables resulting in more repeatable and uniform films, 3) generally better adhesion resulting from higher-energy metal atoms, 4) built-in material supply for continuous operation, and 5) the ability to deposit alloys. The data presented in this paper are the result of two separate studies. One study utilized a small "getter sputtering" enclosure (System A) and was concerned with the structure and properties of thin aluminum films up to about 1600A thick. In this thickness range, study of the film structure was possible with transmission electron microscopy. The second study was conducted with a conventional diode sputtering apparatus (System B) and covered $ much wider range of film thickness up to about 34,000A. Emphasis was placed on developing techniques which would extend aluminum sputtering to an existing in-line continuous deposition process.4 I) EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE System A. Fig. 1 shows a schematic of the "getter sputtering" inner chamber used and Fig. 2 is a photograph of this chamber mounted on an 18-in. access ring of a standard liquid-nitrogen trapped bell-jar vacuum system. This chamber was designed after a similar system used by Theuerer and auser.3 The configuration allowed the glow to emanate in all directions from the cathode. Argon (99.99&apos;) was allowed to enter only at the top of the chamber such that most of the reactive gases entering with the argon were reacted with the aluminum vapor and deposited on the chilled walls of the chamber before reaching the deposition zone. Provision was also made as shown, Fig. 1, for heating and cooling the substrate from about 20" to 400°C. INTRODUCTION The economy of the Philippines, like that of many other developing nations, has been severely strained by the rapid escalation of imported crude oil prices over the past decade. In an effort to reduce its dependence on imported crude, significantly increased emphasis, both in the public and private sectors, is being placed on the rapid development of Philippine coal resources. This paper is designed to present an overview of the Philippine coal industry, its historical development, present status, and future potential. COAL RESOURCES AND RESERVES In 1977, a British consulting firm collated all available data on Philippine coal resources and estimated the total coals potential at about 0.9 to 1.4 billion metric tons (mt). In 1981, using more recent data the Philippine Bureau of Energy Development (BED) estimated the potential at 1.7 billion mt. The BED estimated the proven coal reserves at 257 million mt. These coal resources are scattered throughout the major islands comprising the Philippine archipelago. However, about 52 percent of the currently proven reserves are located in the tiny island of Semirara between the islands of Mindoro and Panay. About 25 percent is located in the Cagayan Valley in northeastern Luzon while 13 percent is located in Mindanao. The remaining 10 percent is scattered in the islands of Cebu, Samar, Mindoro, Negros, Polillo, Batan, and Catanduanes. The bulk of Philippine coal is sub-bituminous in rank. Some bituminous coal with coking properties has been reported in Malangas, Zamboanga del Sur in western Mindanao, and in Catanduanes, but the exact tonnages have not been accurately established. It is believed, however, to be at most 5 million tons. A little semi-anthracite coal exists in Malangas with the remaining unmined reserves estimated at a little more than one million tons. Table 1 shows the quality ranges of Philippine coal deposits.. Figure 1 shows the distribution of known Philippine coal resources PHILIPPINE COAL PRODUCTION In 1981, total coal production was 330,720 mt. Though modest by world standards, this was the highest production figure in Philippine coal mining history. This came from 25 mines, mainly small scale underground mines of capacities varying from 10 to 100 tons per day (tpd). The actual production capability was about 800,000 mt in 1981, but the producers had to scale down production to the level of local demand. Even then, some 50,000 tons of coal remained unused by year-end. The 1981 production came from the following areas: Cebu 224,751 mt (68%) Zamboanga del Sur 57,095 mt (17%) Semirara 13,222 mt (4%) Polillo 17,132 mt (5%) Cebu has always been the main source of Philippine coal production. Coal mining has been carried out in Cebu for the last 50 years, although it has been characterized by a very crude mining technology. Due to the limited size of coal deposits and complicated geology, however, Cebu&apos;s share of the total national production is expected to go down to only 10 percent by 1985. Except for Semirara&apos;s open-pit production, the balance of Philippine coal production comes from underground mines. These underground mines generally use room-and-pillar methods, except for those at Zamboanga del Sur and Polillo which use modified longwall methods patterned after those used in Taiwan. Due to the much higher mining recovery, most underground mines are now planning on switching to longwall. At Semirara, an open pit mine is now being developed for a one million ton per year capacity by 1984, and will then be the largest Philippine coal mine. While present earthmoving work is done with bulldozers, loaders, and trucks, the main coal extraction equipment will be bucket wheel excavators imported from Austria. PRESENT COAL UTILIZATION Existing coal production is sold mainly to coal- fired cement plants and power plants. The balance is sold to a sugar central, a coconut oil mill, a food processing plant, and two plants producing carbide and ferro-silicon alloys.

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the response of soft, porous rock, green shale, under dry and liquid-filled conditions to normal impact of hemispherically-tipped cylindrical steel projectiles with diameter and mass of 6.35 mm and 31 g, respectively. Disk-shaped green shale specimens with nominal thickness and diameter of 32 mm and 127 mm, respectively, were tested in the initial projectile velocity range of 18 to 42 m/s. For the liquid-filled tests, the green shale specimens were saturated with kerosene. A total of eight impact tests were conducted. Information on the extent and pattern of the damage in the rock and velocity histories of the projectiles were collected. It was found that while the penetration depth was quadratically related to the initial projectile kinetic energy for the dry case, the penetration depth for the liquid-filled case was directly proportional to the initial projectile kinetic energy. The results of the impact tests under dry and liquid-filled conditions conformed well to a linearly viscous model and a Coulomb frictional model, respectively. The major deformation processes in the dry specimens were found to be compaction and equivolumnial distortion of the material. In the liquid-filled case, however, formation of cracks and equivolumnial distortion with less material compaction were observed. Furthermore, craters were formed as a result of the crack formation in the liquid-filled specimens.

The introduction oE computer control in the grinding circuit of the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited concentrator in the early 1970&apos;s gave smoother operation at optimum performance. The ore feedrate and water additions to the grinding circuit were controlled to operate each of the ball mill/ rake classifier grinding units at the upper limit of the circulating load while classifier overflow density was maintained to give a product size and pulp density suitable for flotation. An incremental expansion of the concentrator in 1981-82 included the installation of hydrocyclones in closed circuit with three of the four ball mills. Without the rake classifiers in circuit the previous control strategy could not be used and the complex interaction of hydrocyclone performance characteristics when classifying coarse grained sulphide ore resulted in the over-grinding of the lead mineral galena. Testwork aimed at optimising grinding circuit performance recognised the enhanced tendency of higher specific gravity minerals to report to the cyclone underflow. The data has been evaluated on an individual mineral basis and then used to develop a model For grinding circuit control. The development of the model which uses inputs of ore feedrate, metal content of the Feed and slurry density of the cyclone overflow to predict the size of the minerals in the grinding circuit product is described and model predictions are compared with plant performance.

The crystallographic orientation relationships resulting when lead is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge were determined. For each nucleating agent several definite orientatioz relationships were found. These relationships seemed to be controlled by good symmetry relations and low crystallographic disregistry between mating planes. For any given nucleating agent the under colling for nucleation was found fairly constant and independent of the orientation relationship and consequent disregistry. It was also found that, upon re melting and refreezing the Pb, the orientation relationship was changed. These findings prove that crystallographic disregistry is not the controlling factor in heterogeneous nucleation from the liquid. The results of this investigation tend to confirm the theory presented in a preceding paper that heterogeneous nucleation starts with the formation of an adsorbed layer of nucleated metal on the nucleat-ing impurity. Evidence is given that cavities in the nucleating agent act as centers of nucleation. IT has long been known&apos; that solid extraneous particles are active in catalyzing phase transformations that occur in a system, particularly condensation and crystallization. It is well established that these heterogeneities act as catalysts by providing surfaces upon which nuclei of the precipitating phase can form with activation energies smaller than those required for homogeneous nucleation. Numerous investigations have shown that in this process of heterogeneous nucleation: a) the nucleus forms with one, or several, definite crystallographic orientation relationships with the nucleating phase2-4 and b) that there is a small range of undercoolings or super saturations characteristic of the nucleation of a given solid on a given Substrate.5-10 Turnbull and vonnegut11 have developed a theory based on theories developed by Volmer12 and Turn-bull and Fisher1= for heterogeneous nucleation from gases and liquids, that relates the super saturation or undercooling required for nucleation to the dis-registry between the lattices of the nucleus and the nucleating agent. This theory predicts that nucleation should occur with the orientation relationship between the nucleus and nucleating agent that minimizes the disregistry. Further, it predicts that the undercooling or super saturation necessary for nucleation should be a function of the disregistry. Numerous investigations have dealt with the orientation relationships resulting from the condensation of vapors onto crystalline solid substrates2,3 and a few with the nucleation of one phase by a second phase in solidification4,14. Others have dealt with the supersaturation8-10 and undercooling5-7 associated with nucleation in condensation and solidification respectively. However, there is virtually no report that gives both of these factors for the same system. In this investigation a study was made of the undercoolings and orientation relationships resulting when Pb is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge. It was the purpose of this investigation to check the Turnbull-Vonnegut theory, i.e., the importance of crystallographic disregistry between nucleating catalyst and nucleated metal. The results indicate that disregistry is not an important factor in nucleation and that the nucleation process is probably somewhat more complex than current theories suggest. EXPERMENTAL PROCEDURE Small single crystals of nickel, copper, silver, and germanium were prepared from materials of four to five nines purity, and the Pb used was also 99.999+ pet pure. Cu and Ag single crystals were prepared by sealing small chips of Cu or Ag in an evacuated quartz capsule and heating the capsule at 2000°F for 1 hr before cooling. Nickel crystals of 200 diam were also prepared in evacuated quartz capsules, but melting was done by heating the capsules in an oxy-acetylene flame for a few minutes. Polynomial functions of temperature were obtained for the specific heats, thermal diffusivities, and thermal conductivities of zirconium hydrides containing 4 at. pct U. Three hydrides (H/Zr atom ratios of 1.58, 1.65, and 1.70) were studied over the range a" to 900°C and a fourth (H/Zr = 1.81) was studied over the range 0° to 760°C. The specific heats were determined from enthalpy measurements which were obtained using a unique drop calorimeter specifically designed for use with materials in which high temperature phase transitions and/or high dissociation pressures occur. Thermal diffusivities were measured by the flash method using a pulsed laser. The thermal conductiuities were obtained as the product of specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and density. The specific heats agree, within 10 pct, with values derived using a theoretical model in which the hydrogen and zirconium atoms are treated as Einstein and Debye oscillators, respectively. RELIABLE values of the thermophysical properties of the fuel are required to predict the operating temperatures and temperature response of SNAP nuclear reactors. Among the most important of these properties are the thermal conductivity, specific heat, and thermal diffusivity. A considerable number of investigations1-4 have been made of these properties for the Zr-H and Zr-H-U systems.* However, little of the drides, however, this direct method cannot yield meaningful results, since the hydrogen will redistribute under the influence of the thermal gradient, thus forming a concentration gradient; hence, one has a spectrum of compositions, rather than a homogenous alloy. Although the "average" composition of the material may be identical to the initial uniform concentration, the directly measured value of conductivity will be dependent on the thickness of the specimen, due to the highly sensitive dependence of transport properties on hydrogen content. This dependence is strikingly illustrated by the work of Bickel,5 who found that the electrical conduction of zirconium hydrides ranges from primarily hole conduction to primarily electronic conduction, depending upon the hydrogen content. Fortunately, the direct measurement of thermal conductivity is unnecessary, since it can be expressed as the product of the specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and density, all of which can be directly measured with considerable accuracy. EXPERIMENTAL Specimen Preparation. The combined fuel-moderator material used in SNAP reactors is a hydrided zirconium-uranium alloy containing -10 wt pct U. The alloy used in this work was representative of that used in nuclear reactors except that normal uranium was substituted for the enriched uranium required for reactor usage. It was produced by a triple-arc-melt and double-extrusion process. All specimens were prepared from a single cylindrical extrusion which contained 10.30 pet U, 89,35 pct Zr, and 0.35 pct impurities, The specimens for each composition were hydrided simultaneously with ultrapure hydrogen (10 ppm total impurities) using standard fuel production techniques which routinely yield homogeneous, crack-free fuel with negligible increases in the impurity levels. The hydrogen content of each specimen was determined from its weight gain and the density was measured by liquid displacement, Chemical analyses yielded hydrogen concentrations which agreed with the weight gain data within ±0.02 in H/Zr atom ratio) the concentrations of all other elements agreed almost exactly with the initial values after adjustment for the added hydrogen. The specimens used for the determination of specific heat were centerless ground to 2.00 cm diam after hydriding. A thin slice was carefully removed From each end for metallographic examination. In every case, this examination revealed a uniform structure as evidenced by the appearance and distribution of the two phases present in the fuel at the hydrogen concentrations used. The recrystallization reaction in OFHC and spectroscopically pure copper has been followed by X ray diffraction determinations of the amount of material with the cold-worked and recrystallized textures in specimens which had been given various heat treatments. The heats of activation for recrystallization are found to be: 29.9 kcal per rnol for OFHC copper and 22.4 kcal per rnol for spectroscopic copper. A reliable and speedy method for measuring the amount of recrystallized material in a piece of rolled metal, together with a new scheme for low temperature heat treatment, have made possible a determination of the activation energy for recrystallization in rolled copper. This method for studying recrystallization rates is different from others reported in the literature.&apos; Oxygen free, high conductivity copper—OFHC copper—of purity 99.98 pct gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 29.9 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 208-245°C. Copper of purity 99.999 pct from the American Smelting & Refining Co. gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 22.4 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 43-135°C. The great change in activation energy for recrystallization as the small amount of impurity in the metal is decreased suggests that the motion of grain boundaries is conditioned by the impurities which must be concentrated in them. Thus the OFHC copper recrystallizes with an activation energy of the order of magnitude to be expected for the diffusion of the kind of impurities likely to be present. The high purity copper, on the other hand, recrystallizes with a much lower activation energy, in accord with the notion that the grain boundaries need not wait for the impurities to diffuse with them. Copper when strongly cold-rolled has a well-defined crystallite texture which can be described by saying that the [111] direction of the face- centered cubic crystals is aligned approximately in the cross-rolling direction and that faces of the form {110} lie approximately in the rolling plane. When such rolled copper is completely annealed the crystallite texture is quite different: the [loo] direction is in the cross-rolling direction and faces of the form (100) are in the rolling plane. At intermediate stages of annealing, the copper contains both textures. If a Geiger counter X ray diffraction spectrometer is set up so as to measure the intensity of the (200) Bragg reflection from the rolled surface of a piece of copper strip, this intensity increases from a very small value in the cold-worked state to a maximum as the specimen is annealed. The same would be true for (200) reflections from planes normal to the rolling or cross-rolling directions. In view of this fact, the amount of material in the copper which has recrystallized can be measured by comparing the intensities of one of these reflections just mentioned with the intensity from a similar specimen after complete annealing. In much the same way the intensity of (111) reflections from planes normal to the cross-rolling direction could be used to measure the amount of unrecrystallized material in the specimen. In the work to be described here the amounts of recrystallized and unrecrystallized material in partly annealed rolled copper specimens were determined in this way. Experimental Procedure Samples of oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper, cold-rolled 99.7 pct to 0.002 in. thickness, were subjected to heat treatments for various chosen times at four different temperatures, and high purity copper samples, cold-rolled 98.0 pct to 0.0015 in. thickness, at six different temperatures. BENEFICIATION of the manganese oxide ores at Three Kids Mine near Henderson, Nev., has evolved over a period of years. Commercial application of the process is on a secure basis, and an effective working hypothesis has been formulated to help solve the problems encountered in flotation. An outstanding difference between the Manganese Inc. operation and other flotation processes is the necessity for high recovery of slime mineral values. Part of the manganese minerals in the Three Kids ore deposit occurs as primary slime or as minerals that are easily slimed by grinding. High recovery of this slime portion is essential to an economic overall manganese recovery. The aim of much of the research at Manganese Inc. was to recover these slimed and finely ground minerals by flotation. Early Agglomeration Processes: Tunbridge&apos; in 1880, followed by Everson2 in 1886 and Cattermole" in 1904, discovered that under certain pulp conditions precious metals and sulfide minerals could be agglomerated if enough soap or oil were mixed into the pulp slurry. These agglomerated particles, Which under ideal conditions ranged from 1/16 to 1/4 in. diam, were recovered by screening, tabling, and hydraulic classification. Even flotation by air occluded in the agglomkrate particles by vigorous stirring was suggested. Cattermole nearly succeeded in getting his process into commercial operation, but it was finally abandoned, presumably because he could nat compete with the low reagent requirements of the new agitation froth process. Since Cattermole&apos;s time Christensen in 1921, Borcherdt4 in 1926, and Chapman and Littleford- in 1934 have attempted to apply the principles of agglomeration. In the light of current research at Manganese Inc. on conditioning of pulp at high energy input levels, it is interesting to note the variety of equipment such as tumbling mills, mixing drums, and shakers described by Borcherdt in his patent to produce the agglomerated particles. Ore Characteristics: Manganese in the Three Kids ore occurs as a &apos;complex mixture of manganese oxides commonly Known as wad. The manganese minerals have Been identified as psilorflelane, hollandite, coronadite, and pyrolusite with minor amdunts of rhodonite and rhodochrbsite. The ppincipal gangue miherals are quaktz, opal, kaolinite, montmoril-lonite, calcite, gypsum, fcelesitite, and barite. Most of the mangandse ore minerals are either porous and sponge-like in structure or soft clay-like masses composed of fine grained mineral particles approaching the size range of colloids. Consequently the ore minerals from the Three Kids mine have relatively large surface areas and high void content per unit weight. The specific area of various manganese ore samples measured at the California Research Corp. laboratories ranged from 32 to 58 sq m per g. The great surface area and high void content explains in part the unusually high reagent consumption required in the treatment of this ore. Current Milling Practice: At Henderson6 he ore is crushed to —1 in. and ground with rod mills in a closed circuit with spiral rake classifiers and cyclones. Sulfur dioxide solution is added to the pulp as it leaves the grinding circuit, immediately followed by addition of a reagent mixture of soap, oil, and wetting agent in the form of an emulsion. The reagents are initially well mixed into the pulp during their passage through centrifugal pumps to the conditioning equipment. All reagents are added prior to conditioning. The intense conditioning or mechanical stirring of the pulp, in which large amounts of power are consumed, is the principal difference between the flowsheet used at Manganese Inc. and a standard flotation circuit. As much as 38 kw-hr of energy per dry short ton of ore in a pulp containing 18 to 23 pct solids is used for conditioning. The transformation of was studied by isothermal methods. At all temperatures, the ß transforms quickly to fine grained ß" which develops silver-rich striations. At higher temperatures the striations disappear, the final structure being Widmanstatten a in ß&apos;. At lower temperatures, the striated ß" is consumed by pearlite nodules of a + ß&apos; which in turn form the Widmanstatten a in ß&apos;. The transformation is unlike any previously reported for a eutectoid. AS part of a general program of study on the eutectoid reaction, the Ag-Cd eutectoid seemed particularly attractive because the ß phase which undergoes the reaction is another of the typical "electron compounds," AgCd, having the disordered body-centered cubic structure. This work deals with the eutectoid which occurs at 50.5 wt pct Ag, and not with the eutectoid which has been reported at 42.9 pct Ag.&apos; There has been no work reported specifically on the Ag-Cd eutectoid which was studied. The only information available on this eutectoid is that work done in the determination of the phase diagram. For the most part, the terminal portions of the diagram, Fig. 1, are well established; however, the region from 40 to 60 pct Cd is still somewhat in doubt. The X-ray evidence&apos;..&apos; in this region is in conflict with the results of thermal analysis. X-ray analysis3 does not show a polymorphic transformation at about 240°C as indicated by thermal analysis.1,5 Even the X-ray evidence, within itself, is confusing in this region of the diagram. One investigator2 reports the ß phase as hexagonal close-packed and has found three phases in the one-phase ß field. Other X-ray investigators"&apos; &apos; report the ß phase as body-centered cubic. The authors believe that much of the confusion resulted from incomplete homogenization of the alloys. It was found that it takes almost a week to produce a completely homogeneous two-phase structure at 370°C. Another possible source of error is the volatilization of cadmium from the surface and cracks of the specimen during annealing with the possible formation of a cadmium-poor phase. The only metallographic data available on this eutectoid alloy are those of Durrant1 and Fraenkel and Wolff.5 his information is very limited. The phase diagram chosen as most nearly correct is that in the Metals Handbook," which is almost identical with the phase diagram suggested by Durrant.1 Materials and Procedure The alloy was prepared from high purity silver (999.5 plus fine) and high purity cadmium (0.02 Pb, 0.005 Cu, trace Fe). The metals were melted in carbon under a nitrogen atmosphere. Some cadmium was lost by volatilization but by remelting several times and adding cadmium a 200 g ingot of approximately eutectoid composition was obtained. Because the CdO fumes are quite toxic, the exit gas from the furnace was led through a water trap to condense the CdO. The ingot was homogenized at 650°C for 24 hr, no attempt was made to prevent decadmiumization. This resulted in a narrow decadmiumized rim on the ingot which was removed. Filings for analysis were obtained from cross sections of the ingot. Silver was determined by the Volhard thiocyanate method,? cadmium by difference. The ingot analyzed 50.8 pct Ag at the top of the ingot and 50.7 pct at the middle and at the bottom of the ingot. This alloy was only slightly hypo-eutectoid compared to the accepted value of 50.5 pct Ag and was used for the isothermal studies. It was felt that further attempts to adjust the composition might be futile because of the volatility of the cadmium. The ingot was sectioned to specimens approximately 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/8 in. These specimens were "austeni-tized" for 3 hr in air at 650°C to yield homogeneous ß and then quenched into a salt bath held at constant subeutectoid temperatures where the transformation

The observation that silicon-on-sapphire crystallo-graphic relationships exist which are unrelated to one another implies that there are regions of sapphire orientations containing these relationships which are separated by boundaries. The presence of these boundaries is demonstrated, initially on rounded cylindrical surfaces md more definitively on flat sapphire substrates with orientations along primary crystallograPhic zones. By means of reflection electron and X-ray diffraction techniques the crystallographic relationships have been studied. Two new relationships have been found, viz., (111) Si (1014) sapphire and (001)Si (1012) sapphire. Also found were multicrystalline relationships. The approximated boundaries between the crystallographic regions for each relationship are shown by means of a stereo-graphic projection. These studies also clarify discrepancies in the literature concerning the silicon-sapphire relationships on the (1120) sapphire substrate. SINCE the first report of the deposition of single-crystal silicon on sapphire in 1963&apos; this epitaxial system has been the object of study by many semiconductor laboratories. In particular, there has been strong interest in the crystallographic relationships between the two materials. In 19652,3 we demonstrated that at least four distinct modes of orientation relationships can occur, namely, (100)Si (0112) sapphire, (111)Si 11 (1124) sapphire, (111)Si (1120) sapphire, and (111)Si (0001) sapphire. Each relationship could be obtained when the substrate plane was at the particular orientation indicated. Other workers as well as our laboratory concurred in general with the initial results. However, two discrepancies were observed. First it was observed by Joyce et a1.4 that on a (1120) substrate a (110) silicon deposit could be obtained. This was actually consistent with the (111)Si (1124) sapphire mode. Second, two other laboratories,5,6 as well as our own,7 have found a deposition on the basal plane which is different than our initial findings. Even though a (111)Si deposit was obtained, the crystallographic relationships were not identical to those previously found. Subsequent work in our laboratories has confirmed that the form found in these later investigations of the basal plane is by far the more predominant, and the original finding was an anomaly. The relationships which have been previously estab1.ished are summarized in Table I. It is seen that at present a rather small number of possible substrate orientations has been investigated. Therefore, it seemed appropriate that a systematic investigation of silicon epitaxy on various sapphire substrate orientations would be of value. It was expected that the answers to three questions could be obtained from such an investigation. These are as follows: 1) Since we know of at least four distinct modes of orientation relationships, over what range of substrate orientation do these modes occur and what is the form of the boundary expected between the different regions in which each mode occurs? 2) Are there other modes which occur on substrate orientations not previously investigated? 3) What is the explanation for the discrepancy between our laboratory&apos;s findings and those results reported by Joyce et al.4 concerning the relationships occurring on (1120) substrates? APPROACHES AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Two different approaches were used. Initially, depositions were carried out on rounded cylindrical surfaces which lay perpendicular to the (0112) plane.* By this means the presence of boundaries and their approximate positions could be determined. Finally and more definitively, depositions on flat sapphire substrates with a variety of orientations, mostly along primary crystallographic zones and about the (1120) plane, were studied by means of reflection electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction (using back-reflection Laue patterns and full circle goniometer techniques) in order to determine crystallographic relationships. Dense cylindrical specimens of artificial hematite were reduced in hydrogen over a range 0-f total pressures between 0.1 and 1.0 atm and temperatures between 650" and 950°C. Hydrogen reduction at a total pressure of 1.0 atm in the presence of a chemically inert diluent and reduction in hydrogen/water mixtures were also studied Znter.face movement during reduction was followed using metallographic techniques. Substantiu1 partial-pressure gradients are shown to exist in both the gas film and the reduced iron layer. The results are consistent with a mixed-control mechanism involving an interaction of gaseous-difusion effects with a first-order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wüstite interface. Over the hydrogen-pressure range of 0.1 to 1.0 atm, the rate is not directly proportional to the hydrogen pressure in the bulk gas stream. Nitrogen dilution of the reducing gas masks the true effect of hydrogen partial pressure by influencing the effective molecular dif-fusivity and gives an apparent first-order relationship. The transport of hydrogen and water vapor across the iron layer is consistent with molecular gaseous diffusion rather than a Knudsen diffusion mechanism. ALTHOUGH the literature on the reduction of iron oxides is very extensive, it is only comparatively recently that a definite quantitative model for the reduction of hematite has been proposed. This development has been largely due to the work of McKewan. An extensive literature review of previous work has recently been compiled by Themelis and Gauvin. Exclusive control by gaseous diffusion in the reduction of hematite has been recently advocated by Kawasaki and coworkers.&apos; Although the results of the latter workers are of considerable practical significance, the extreme porosity (approximately 30 pct) of their specimens precludes their application to a kinetic evaluation of the reduction of dense polycrystalline hematite. The salient features of the kinetic model used by McKewan for the gaseous reduction of dense hematite at temperatures in excess of 560°C (when FeO is stable) are: 1) The reduction is a topochemical reaction taking place through &apos;the series FeO/FesO4/FeO/ Fe; 2) The gas-solid type of reaction takes place only at the FeO/Fe interface and the internal reduction: FeO proceeds by solid state diffusion; 3) The iron layer formed is quite porous and offers negligible impedance to gaseous diffusion; 4) The rate-controlling step in the reduction is a chemical process occurring at the Fe/FeO interface. In view of the relatively fast reaction rates involved when hematite is reduced in a stream of hydrogen, it seemed possible that the simplifying assumptions of negligible diffusional resistance in both the bulk gas phase and the reduced iron layer could introduce serious errors in the interpretation of experimental reduction data. The present work was initiated to elucidate the effect of gaseous diffusion on the reduction rate and to determine its possible influence in the formulation of the reaction mechanism at the metal/oxide interface. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure and Apparatus. Dense cylindrical compacts of artificial hematite were prepared by sintering pressed compacts of reagent-grade ferric oxide, containing 99.6 pct FezO, in air at 1200°C for 80 hr. The resulting compacts had a final porosity of less than 2 pct and a height and diameter of approximately 1 cm. Variations in sintering atmosphere from air to pure oxygen, in sintering time from 20 to 80 hr, and temperature from 1150" to 1250°C had no effect on the subsequent reduction behavior. Silicon thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum onto (0001) and (1102) sapphire substrates. Attempts were made to correlate the structural properties of the deposited silicon films with the following: 1) substrate orientation, 2) substrate surface condition, 3) substrate temperature, and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000°C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. The following sapphire surface treatments were investigated: 1) annealing in the ultrahigh vacuum at 1200° C; 2) heating in a hydrogen atmosphere at about 1350°C; and 3) etching with silicon by evaporating silicon onto sapphire substrates heated to 1200° or 1300°C. Twinned silicon films were occasionally formed at substrate temperatures between the 800° and 1000°C on unprocessed mechanically polished substrates; however, the reproducibility and crystallinity of these films were generally poor. Single-crystal and twinned silicon films were formed at substrate temperatures between 700° and 1000°C on substrates which were silicon-etched at 1300°C prior to deposition. Fiber texture films were formed at substrate temperatures between 500° and 700°C. The (111) lattice plane of the silicon single-crystal films was parallel to the (0001) sapphire plane and the (100) silicon plane was parallel to the (1102) sapphire plane. TECHNIQUES are well-established for growing single-crystal silicon thin films on sapphire by chemical methods.&apos;-* Vacuum epitaxial techniques have a number of advantages over chemical epitaxial techniques in the fabrication of thin film microcircuits.5 One of the most significant is that vacuum techniques are compatible with well-established procedures for forming vacuum-deposited thin-film resistors, capacitors, and interconnections. Salatna, Tucker, and young6 recently reported the formation of relatively poor crystalline-quality silicon films on sapphire by electron beam evaporation in a vacuum of about 7 x 10-7 Torr. The purpose of the investigation described here is to determine the relationships between the structural properties of silicon thin films deposited on sapphire substrates by electron beam evaporation in an ultra-high vacuum and the following: 1) substrate orientation; 2) substrate surface condition; 3) substrate temperature; and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000° C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. Two orientations of sapphire were used: (0001) and (1102). The thick-nesses of the films were between 8000 and 16,000A. The morphology and crystallinity of the deposited films and substrate surfaces were investigated by optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A cross section of the ultrahigh-vacuum thin-film evaporator is shown in Fig. 1. The bell jar is stainless steel and copper gaskets are utilized at all seals. High vacuum is attained by a 6001iter per sec ion pump and a titanium sublimation pump. Sorption pumps are used to rough the system to a pressure of about 10 µ prior to starting the ion pump. Vacuums in the 10- 10 Torr range were attained after baking the system at about 250°C for 8 hr. Vacuums in the 10-8 to 10-9 Torr range were maintained during silicon evaporation. The silicon charges, which were cut from p-type single-crystal boules which had resistivities between 2000 and 4500 ohm-cm, were placed in the water-cooled copper crucible of a 180 deg bent-beam 5-kw electron beam evaporator. During evaporation, a molten zone was formed in the top center of the silicon charge, and the portion of the silicon charge in contact with the water-cooled crucible remained solid. GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHES DIVISION OF ENGINEERING Government supervision of employment for technical men has been inaugurated by the United States Employment Service, through the establishment of a Division of Engineering, with A. H. Krom, of Chicago, formerly Secretary of the American Association of Engineers, as Director. War demands on the engineering profession have already caused a serious shortage of men with mechanical designing experience and those with practical experience in chemical engineering. At present the professional organizing mediums reach less than 20 per cent. of the estimated 300,000 technical men in the country. This is not a satisfactory arrangement for war times. All the technical men of the country must be reached and, in addition, all men with technical experience must be carefully registered so that they will be immediately available. The advantages of such a governmental registering and systematizing of employment will be apparent at once, to the engineer. Considering that this is principally an engineer&apos;s war, the importance of Federal direction of distribution and conservation of the technical service of the country is apparent. The Service will he started through the office of the Director of Engineering, 29 S. LaSalle St., Chicago. All technical men desiring to register for emergency Government work or permanent advancement in positions meeting their qualifications, are urged to volunteer at once for registration, classification and employment.

Binary and ternary alloys of uranium with transition metals were prepared with U2X stoichiometry. The compounds U2Tc, U2Rh, U2Os, and U2lr were formed by peritectic or peritectoid transformations, and were shown to be isostructural with U2Ru. The lattice constants are presented. Miscibility relationships obtained from the study of ternary alloys are graphically summarized in terms of an area-of-stability plot. The compound U2Re is not isostructural with either U2Ru or U2Mo. A series of compounds with stoichiometry U2X has been prepared in which X is technetium, rhodium, rhenium, osmium, or iridium. The only other U2X compounds, for which X is related to the above transition metals by proximity in the periodic table, are U2Mo and U2Ru. The structure of U2Mo is the tetragonal C11b type (MoSi2 type)1 and U2Ru is monoclinic, with a new structure type.&apos; This investigation was undertaken to determine if any of the above compounds are isostructural with either U2Ru or U2Mo and to find the range of occurrence of these phases. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys were prepared from stoichiometric amounts of electrolytic uranium (99.99 pet pure) and transition metals of 99.5 pet purity (98+ pet pure Tc), by arc melting on a water-cooled copper hearth under an Ar-He atmosphere. Weight losses were negligible. The buttons were homogenized at temperatures between 700o and 800°C (900°C for U2Tc) in evacuated capsules and air-cooled. The X-ray powder specimens were annealed briefly at the temperature of homogenization. Except in the case of the technetium alloy, metallographic examination was used to determine the number of phases present. The radiation hazard involved in handling technetium precluded the use of metallography to examine U2Tc. The temperature and mode of formation of the U2X phases were determined by heating the metallographic specimens to successively higher temperatures, until examination indicated the presence of chilled liquid or a peritectoid transformation. RESULTS The U2X compounds investigated were found to be formed under the following conditions: UzTc unknown U2Ru peritectic 897o ± 3°C U2Rh peritectoid 755o ± 5°C U2Re peritectoid3 below 750°C Uas peritectic4 920°C U2Ir peritectoid 775o ± 5oC Debye-Scherrer patterns for the above U2X phases were made with CuKa radiation (nickel filter). The similarities in the positions and intensities of the strongest lines in the front-reflection region strongly suggested that U2Tc, U2Ru, U2Rh, U2Os, and U21r are isostructural with only minor differences in the unit-cell dimensions. The known lattice constants and intensities of the Debye-Scherrer rings for U2RU2 were used as a guide in order to index the low-angle X-ray reflections of the U2TC, U2Rh, U2Os, and U2Ir powder patterns. Approximate lattice constants for these compounds were thus obtained and were used along with the intensities observed for U2Ru to index the strongest lines in the back-reflection regions. A sin2 2? correction term was included and the lattice constants were refined and standard deviations estimated by least squares. Comparison of observed and calculated values of Q(= 4 sin2?/?2) used in these calculations are given in Table I. In each case when the positions of lines could not be resolved on the films they were not measured. AS the Petroleum Division rounds off the first quarter century since its evolution from technical committee status, there steps to the long line of notable men who have presided over its activities a young man, currently of Tulsa, one Herbert F. Beardmore by name. For one year, as Chairman for 1946, the Division will be his oyster. hi; baby, his responsibility. "Herb" Beardmore was born at Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 6, 1904, and lived there until he was thirteen. Then his family moved to Oklahoma City, and later sent him to the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated in 1925 with a B.S. in engineering geology. His final year in college was the first year in which a petroleum engineering course was taught at the school. Since his course of study so closely paralleled that of a petroleum engineer, he has frequently been spoken of as the first petroleum engineering graduate from the University of Oklahoma. Out of college he went to work as an oil-field roustabout in the Ranger, Texas, field for Jake L. Hamon. This work consisted of all manual labor phases of cable-tool operation and beam-pumping of oil wells. He moved in 1926 to Bartlesville, to become a gas engineer for the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co., where he was employed in gas-well drilling, gas production, and transportation, mostly in Osage County, Oklahoma.

The reduction of manganese oxide from a basic slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron at steelmaking temperatures was studied to determine the rate-controlling step for the process. The experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere in a resistance-heated vertical-tube furnace. The two liquid phases, slag and metal, were held in zirconia crucibles. Sampling and chemical analysis of the slag phase led to time-concentration curves for the system. Results obtained by varying parameters such as temperature, stirring rate, concentration, and melt geometry defined the limiting reaction mechanism. The reduction of manganese oxide by silicon is a fast reaction and reached equilibrium within 90 min. The rate of stirring has a marked effect on the reaction rate, while, on the other hand, the effect of temperature is very small. This identifies the rate-controlling step as diffusion rather than interfaciul chemical reaction. The variation of other parameters revealed that a) diffusion of manganese in the iron phase is the slow step, b) the value of D/6 for manganese in iron at 1550°C is 7x 10-4 cm per sec, c) the energy of activation for the apparent rate constant is 7 kcal per mole, and d) increasing the amount of silicon in the iron decreases the diffusion coefficient of manganese. THE equilibrium relations pertinent to the reduction of manganese oxide from a steelmaking slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron have been studied, but little is known about the mechanisms that control the rate of the process. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the rate of reduction by silicon and to determine the rate-limiting step. The effects of stirring rate, temperature, composition, and melt geometry were investigated as a means of identifying the controlling step. On the laboratory scale, relatively little work has been done in the area of slag-metal kinetics, primarily because of the problems confronted in attempting to contain liquid slags and metals in laboratory crucibles at steelmaking temperatures. Since graphite is an ideal material for a crucible, several investigations have been carried out on the reduction of various oxides from a slag by carbon in graphite-saturated iron and on the transfer of sulfur between a slag and graphite-saturated iron. Most of this work has been performed in induction furnaces. Studies where the container was not graphite are extremely limited. A single kinetic study of manganese transfer between molten iron and basic slags was carried out by Sano, Shiomi, and Matsushita.&apos; These investigators prepared calcium oxide and titanium oxide crucibles to contain the two-phase system. Only a few experiments were carried out and the results had to be treated qualitatively. Despite the paucity of kinetic data, a large quantity of information is available in the literature concerning the thermodynamics2-12 and physical properties&apos;3-21 of the slags containing manganese oxide and the dilute liquid iron alloys containing manganese and silicon which were involved in this research program. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A vertical-tube resistance-heated furnace was used in this investigation to study the slag-metal reaction Although most previous slag-metal studies were carried out in induction furnaces, a resistance furnace has several advantages including better control of temperature and stirring rate. Hence, a resistance furnace was selected for this study, and its design is shown schematically in Fig. 1.
