INTRODUCTION The Friedensville mine is situated in Upper Saucon Township, Le- high County, Pennsylvania, in the southern central part of the Allentown quadrangle of the United States Geological Survey, approximately 5 miles southeast of the City of Allentown and 4 miles south of the City of Bethlehem. Zinc was first discovered in the Friedensville area early in the 19th century and several mines were operating during the latter part of the century. Zinc oxide was produced in 1853 and zinc metal in 1859. All mining in the area ceased in 1893 chiefly because of an unfavorable economic situation caused by a severe ground water problem and competition from the higher grade ores in New Jersey. Property acquisition by the New Jersey Zinc Company began in 1899 and periodic exploratory drilling was carried on until 1940 when sufficient reserves were proved for development of a mine. Shaft sinking was undertaken in 1947 and, due to severe hydrologic conditions, was not completed until 1952. Production began in 1958 and today the mine is producing about 64,000 tons of zinc concentrate per annum. The concentrates are trucked to the Company's smelter at Palmerton, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles north of Friedensville. The mine also produces from its mill tailings industrial and agricultural grades of limestone for commercial markets.

THE purification of two metals, antimony and tin, by zone refining is described, and a reciprocating method of passing molten zones through a straight ingot, which effects a considerable economy of time and apparatus, is discussed. Antimony has been used extensively as a doping agent in germanium and silicon. More recently, it has become important in the preparation of new semiconducting compounds such as InSb, GaSb, and AlSb. High purity is especially necessary in this latter use, since the antimony may comprise as much as 80 pct by weight of the compound. Antimony is generally available in a commercial form of about 99.8 pct purity. Column 1 of Table I is a typical emission spectra analysis of commercially available 99.8 pct antimony. Zone refining has been quite successful in increasing the purity of such samples. Columns 2 to 4 of Table I are analyses of an ingot of the antimony of column 1 after the passage of seven molten zones in an atmosphere of nitrogen. The ingot length was 9 1/2 in.; the mean zone length was 2 in.; convection was the only means of stirring. The column headings are sample locations in inches from the leading end of the ingot. The alloy under discussion is a Pig. I shows results of heat-treating tests nickel-silicon bronze and is one of many on two typical nickel-silicon bronze castings age-hardening or precipitation-hardening of the type on which the observations were copper-base alloys. The hardening constituent is a nickel-silicon compound.l The quenching temperature necessary to produce hardening by a subsequent aging treatment is a function of the composition and extends from about 700°C. to 950°C.; the aging temperature range extends from 4000 to 600°C. The work carried out by the authors of this paper was confined to cast alloys having compositions within the ranges of: 1.5 to 3.00 per cent Ni; 0.4 to 0.75 per cent Sj: balance. comer. made. A quenching temperature of 750°C. produces almost as high a hardness on subsequent aging as do quenching temperatures of 850' and 900°C. Several foundries have spent years of active and intelligent effort in trying to control the casting and heat-treating variables of nickel-silicon bronzes and finally gave up the attempts because of the inconsistencies of results.2 This undesirable characteristic was not manifest in the ultimate hardness or conductivity but primarily in tensile strength and ductility, as shown in Table I. Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sand-blasting agent, as a premium grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. It is produced by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. as a coproduct in titanium mineral production in Florida where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in June 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. In the Trail Ridge deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy minerals, the principal other heavy mineral constituents being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and the other silicate nonconductive heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total processing, 200 tons of raw sand yield 7 tons of heavy mineral concentrate from which about one ton of staurolite is recovered. This process yields staurolite concentrates of the characteristics given in Table 1. These concentrates are sold as three products with the size distribution of subrounded particles shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sand-blasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower unit cost abrasives, such as boiler slags and mineral aggregates, in applications where the abrasive is used only one time and is not recovered. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, with less material reportedly being required [ ]

Masjid-i-Su1aiman.—There have been no new developments in the Masjid-i-Sulaiman field during the year. Drilling, deepcning and acidizing operations for maintenance of production havc continued normally. Reservoir conditions have been unchanged, the rate of fall of dome prcssure remaining very low—at about 0.4 lb. per sq. in. per million tons net production. Drilling on the Lali structure northwest of Masjid-i-Sulaiman has continued but oil has not been encountered in commercial quantities. Haft Kel.—The progressive drilling program extending the production capacity of the Haft Kel field was completed carly in the year and the field is now on a routine maintenance basis. Drilling has continued on the white-oil springs structurc northwest of Haft Kel. Naft-i-Shah.—No developments of interest have occurred in Naft-i-Shah field. Offtake is for local markets only. A further large produeer was completed during the year. Gach Saran.—By the end of 1939, work on plant and pipe lines to put, the field on a production basis was approaching completion. Two substantial producers were also drilled in the initial production area. Pazanun and Agha Jari.—No further drilling was carried out on the Pazanun structure during the year, gas only having been obtained to depths exceeding 8000 ft. On the adjacent Agha Jari structure, however, a second satisfactory oil producer was completed.

Extrapolation is a useful technique, but it can be overdone. Seldom is it justified to study over a range of 1 to 6 and extrapolate the results to 150,000. It is especially dangerous if the extrapolation is based on a false assumption. The authors assume settlers scale-up by residence time rather than by area, admit their result (a settler depth of 7 m) is "unreasonable" and suggest longer, wider, shallower settlers might be better. Various authors have noted for a copper-LIX system a total flow basis of 2 gpm per sq ft for sizing settlers. The results of this are compared with those in the paper in [Table 7]. The authors note that flooding of their settlers was never approached. Thus the smallest unit calculated is understandably twice too big. The largest however, is 5% of the required size. I note that the figures in [Table 6] for 1/min/cm2 are based on plan area rather than cross section as titled and are wrong by l0 4. A flow of 2050 1/min/cm2 is about Mach I. It is also 10 5/3 or 46.5 times that of the little one, although the abstract says the design was based on constant flow rate per unit cross section.

THE effect of copper on steel has been studied by numerous investigators. Before modern testing methods had been developed, blacksmiths noted red shortness in iron, the cause for which was ascribed to the presence of copper. Numerous papers have been published on the corrosion of steels containing various amounts of copper, and a few writers have discussed the effect of copper on the mechanical properties of steel. The purpose of the investigation described in the following paper was to obtain additional data on the mechanical properties of medium-carbon steel containing small quantities of copper. Among those who have published results of mechanical tests on copper steels are Ball,1 who states that copper increases the tensile strength and 'hardness but lowers the elongation. Stead2 states that copper steels closely resemble nickel steels containing equivalent percentages of nickel,, as regards tensile strength, resistance to shock, corrosion and hardness. Wigham 5 found that copper in small amounts had no injurious effect on steel. Breuil4 found that with 1 per cent. carbon, copper lessened the brittleness of steel and in low-carbon steel it increased the tensile strength and lowered the ductility slightly. H. H. Campbell 5 states that copper up to 0.25 per cent. slightly raises the elastic limit, elongation and reduction of area.

lHE general constitution of a number of metal-lead telluride and metal-tin telluride systems has recently been studied in an effort designed to furnish background information for the study of degradation mechanisms on junctions between thermoelectric power generation materials and metals.1"4 This paper reports further results of that effort. It was found that cobalt-lead telluride constitutes a stable pseudobinary section through the ternary Co-Pb-Te system. Materials used in the study were lead and tellurium of semiconductor-grade purity (American Smelting and Refining Corp., 99.999+ pet). Cobalt (Johnson Matthey & Co., 99.999 pet purity) was used in the form of slices cut from rods of 5 mm diam. Twenty- gram charges of the alloys were melted in evacuated quartz ampoules. Thermal analysis, as described previously,2'3 and metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods (Debye-Scherrer photographs) were used as investigative tools. Substantial difficulties were encountered in polishing, as reported previously for the lead telluride-iron system.3 A number of different etches were used, including dilute aqua regia, Murakami solution, an etch containing copper nitrate,3 and HC1-HNO3-acetic acid-water mixtures. The following tables showing the output of coal during the year 1913 have been secured y R. H. Morris, of Pocahontas, Alberta, Canada, for the use of the Committee through the kindness of John T. Stirling, Chief Mine-Inspector of Alberta. The principal mining districts are, Crow's Nest Pass, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Edmonton, the outputs from which were as follows: Tons Crow's Nest Pass 1,849,435 Calgary...: 627,461 Lethbridge ; 966,020 Edmonton 863,430 Total 4,306,346 Of this quantity there was exported to the United States, principally from the Crow's Nest Pass district, 138,201 tons of 2,000 lb., that being the ton used throughout the Province. This production consisted of lignite, bituminous coal, anthracite, coking coal and coal used in making. briquettes, as follows: Tons "Lignite coal" (lignitic?) 1,763,225 Bituminous coal 2,374,401 Anthracite coal 168,720 Coking coal 104,012 Coke produced 65,167 Briquettes produced 130,861 The only district in which coke was made is the Crow's Nest Pass district, and the entire product was consumed in Canada. SOLID-STATE transformations at low temperatures are frequently studied by optical metallography. Greninger and ooradian' and Hull and Gar-wood2 have examined the martensitic-type transformations in 0-phase Cu-Zn alloys during continuous cooling below room temperature. The lowest range of temperatures in the apparatus described by these investigators is limited to approximately 110°K. Present studies of reversible first-order phase transitions near liquid-helium temperatures have necessitated the design of a new cold-stage cryo-stat for optical metallography. The features of interest of this instrument are as follows: a) temperatures down to 4.Z°K are obtainable; b) the specimen is always under vacuum, thereby avoiding the condensation of moisture; c) specimens can be rapidly cooled or heated at varying rates, thus permitting studies of transformation hysteresis. Fig. 1 shows the details of the cryostat. All major parts are made of type 304 stainless steel. Both helium and nitrogen cans are Heliarc-welded to the helium filling tube, permitting the use of a common shielding can. Hence, the over-all weight and the area of the evacuated surface are mini- mized. The copper sample holder is screwed into the bottom of the helium can. To assure good thermal contact between the sample holder and the refrigerant, an indium ribbon is placed on the threads

The Field Meeting of the Chicago Section proved to be the most enjoyable meeting ever held by the Section. It took the form of a visit to the Northern Indiana Industrial District where the day was spent inspecting metallurgical plants in Indiana Harbor and East Chicago and in amusement at the Hammond Country Club. The weather was perfect and about 50 members and ladies attended the meeting. An inspection of the plant of the Inland Steel Co. occupied the morning. The plant was decorated in honor of the occasion and the company provided attractive souvenirs. It was noticed here that many of the ladies displayed an interest in the inspection and an understanding of the processes that would not have shamed professional metallurgists. While the members of the Section seemed to be most interested in the by-product coke ovens and the by-product recovery plant, the ladies enjoyed especially watching the snake-like antics of the red-hot rods in the wire mill. Leaving the steel plant, the Section enjoyed a ride through the district by automobile and arrived at the Hammond Country Club in time for lunch. In the afternoon some of the members inspected the plant of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, while the rest spent the time at the Country Club in golf, tennis, trap shooting, bridge and other amusements. During the dinner at the Hammond Country Club an informally organized male quartette led the singing in real college boy style. In the evening, E. E. Billow talked on the use of oil burners in metallurgical furnaces, Mr. MacDowell told of the present status of the Potash Industry and the Secretary told of some of the happenings at the Arizona Meeting. Although usually coal is screened with punched plate screens having round-hole perforations, there has been an increasing use of wire-cloth screens with square apertures, especially at pneumatic coal-cleaning plants and at other plants that use vibrating screens. It is therefore desirable to establish a relationship between round-hole and square-hole screens for use not only in experimental investigations of coal-preparation problems, but also for use in commercial operations. This need is apparent whenever it is necessary to substitute wire cloth for punched plate and still retain the familiar trade-size product. Although similar work probably has been done by industrial organizations concerned with the screen sizing of coal, the only recorded study of the subject other than the one described herein of which the authors are aware is that of Roesler,1 who screen-sized two samples of limestone and two of zinc concentrates crushed to pass 1/2 in. with a set of square and round-hole screens and found the ratio to be 1:1.23. Procedure In the course of a study of various methods for determining the friability of coal,2 it was necessary to screen-size the products of a series of friability tests of three different coals with both round-hole and square-hole screens. The coals used were from the Roslyn No. 3 and the Bayne mines in Washington and the Rolapp mine in Utah. Twenty 25-lb. samples of each of these three coals at 3 to 2 1/2 in. round-hole size were dropped from a height of 10 ft. to a concrete floor, and then screened with

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is being developed in southeastern New Mexico by the United States Department of Energy as a research and development (R&D) facility to demonstrate the safe disposal in salt of radioactive wastes resulting from defense activities. As part of the WIPP R&D program, a series of in situ tests will be performed to determine the behavior of drifts and storage rooms in the creeping salt medium (Matalucci, et al. 1982). Data obtained in these tests will be used to evaluate and improve numerical models used to compute the structural response of these drifts and rooms. Stress has been proposed as one of the parameters to be measured in the tests, and borehole inclusion stressmeters have been included in the instrumentation package. Cages of this type provide an indirect measurement of stress change in that they actually monitor borehole displacements which are then related to changes in the in situ stress away from the borehole. The relationship between stress and displacement is highly dependent upon the constitutive behavior of the rock in which the gage is emplaced. This relationship is well understood for rocks with linear stress-strain behavior (Fossum, et al, 1976), but, for creeping rocks like salt, the relationship has yet to be determined. Thus, inclusion gage response in salt must be investigated fully before stress measurements from the WIPP in situ tests can be used for comparisons with computed stresses The calculations presented in this paper were performed as part of an investigation of inclusion stressmeter performance in salt. They focus on the strain gaged stressmeter (SGS) (Cook and Ames, 1979) and on a hypothetical solid cylindrical inclusion with variable stiffness Issues addressed include the effects of creep and the effects of gage stiffness on stressmeter output for various loading conditions. This is a nontechnical paper on flotation, subdivided under three general headings: (I) Definition of flotation; (2) what flotation is now doing in Utah; and (3) what is the future of flotation? Definition T. A. Rickard defines flotation' as "the act or state of floating," from the French flottaison, water-line and flotter, to float. The dictionary defines flotation as "the science of floating bodies." The flotation process is a method of concentrating ores by frothing. Weinig and Palmer,2 define flotation as follows: What is the flotation process? Briefly, it consists in the agitation of finely divided ore in water containing bubbles of air or gas, a small amount of oil and, usually, other reagents, soluble and insoluble; under these conditions the small particles of native metals, sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, selenides and tellurides show a tendency to attach themselves to the films of the bubbles, and are thus carried to the surface of the water. The oxidized gangue minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, limestone, hematite, etc., show much less affinity for the bubbles, are easily wetted by the water, and either remain in suspension in the water, or sink to the bottom of the vessel. If the bubbles are sufficiently stable they can be removed, carrying their load of sulfide-mineral particles with them. Thus there can be effected a separation of the two classes of minerals from each other, assuming that the grinding has been sufficient to unlock all of the particles of different composition. The separation does not depend upon differences in specific gravity of the various minerals; in fact, the sulfides are usually heavier than the oxides, and some of the heaviest sulfide minerals are the easiest to float. A particle of mineral may be so large, however, that its weight will counteract its affinity for the film of the bubble. In most cases the ore must be fine enough to pass a screen having at least 48 meshes to the linear inch. Taggart3 defines flotation as follows: Flotation is a method of wet concentration of ores in which separation of mineral from gangue is effected by causing the mineral to float at or above the surface of a body of liquid pulp while the gangue becomes or remains submerged. Evidence is produced below to show that the carbide "Mn,C," reported by Kw,and ersson' is really a mixture of two carbides. One is an Fe-Mn carbide which is probably isomorphous with hexagonal Mn15C4, reported by Bouchand and Pruchart.' The othev is a tetragonul Fe-Mn carbide with cell dzmensions close to those reported previously by the author3 for an Fe0.1Mno. carbide. IN a recent investigation several Fe-Mn carbide specimens, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared in a manner previously reported.3 Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of at least two samples from different parts of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera. The exposure time was 2 hr using filtered chromium radiation, a tube voltage of 35 kv and a tube current of 10 ma. In the case of one specimen, which contained nominal weight percentages of iron, manganese, and carbon of 9.40, 84. 6,, and 6.0, respectively, duplicate chemical analyses indicated f1.2 and 5.5 wt pct C to be present in the two samples taken of the specimen: no graphitic carbon was detected. One powder-diffraction pattern of this specimen indicated the presence of the tetragons: carbide reported earlier,3 (a = 6.772A, c = 9.427A), plus cementite (O), plus an unknown structure. MUCH has been written of late regarding the flotation of coal as a means of reclaiming the valuable portion of the fines encountered in nearly all methods of coal preparation. Whether the process be wet or dry, whether the dust be sent through the entire process or removed prior to the cleaning by some such method as screening or aspiration, one of the final products consists of a considerable proportion of -48-mesh material. The percentage of this -48-mesh material depends upon the mining method, transportation, storage, and method of preparation. The ton-nage of this dust material ranges from 1 to 10 per cent of the total output of the cleaning plants. Four methods of disposal are available for this coal: 1. Disposal with the refuse from the plant. 2. Addition, after being reclaimed from the wash water, or dust collectors, without cleaning to the larger sizes. 3. Separate disposal as a pulverized fuel. 4. Cleaning so that addition to the larger sizes benefits the product as a whole. It is also true that flotation in one form or another is the only known way to effectively clean this material. While some processes do a reason-able cleaning job down to and including +100 mesh, by far the greater-majority stop at or short of the +48-mesh size.

Biological as well as geological research has made very successful use of the qualities that the physicists have detected in radioactive substances. Outstanding examples for the vast new fields opened in this part of the border-land between the disciplines of geology and physics are the "radio thermal geology" [July, 1909, see 1 of "References" at end of paper] and all that is connected with the use of the radioactive disintegration clock for the age-determination of rocks and minerals [2]. In structural geology, not unlike to recent bi-ological uses of radioactive material, their "tracer" properties were helpful. Changes in Radon concentra-tion in soil-air, especially accumulations, led to hidden crevices and fault-zones. High contents of Radon in spring-water gave clues as to the types of rocks they had flowed through [3, 4). One specific application of the small admixtures of radioactive material, however, has only lately found some atten-tion and that is their use in linking beds of sedi-mentary strata otherwise only poorly identified be-cause of the lack of fossils or other characteristic properties. To be useful for this purpose, two con-ditions have to be fulfilled: (1) The amount of radioactive material per unit-weight of rock in a given horizon should be uniform over a large area; (2) this same amount should change fairly rapidly in the vertical succession of layers.

Uranium, discovered in 1949 at Rum Jungle, 40 miles south of Darwin, N. T., was mined and processed to U3O8 from 1954 to 1963 by the Territory Enterprises Pty. Ltd. TEP is a Government company managed by Conzinc RioTinto of Australia Ltd. During this period, the uranium oxide was sold under contract to the Combined Development Agency, a joint Anglo-American uranium procurement agency. When the contract terminated in 1963, more than 31/4 million pounds of uranium oxide had been delivered which had been mined from three open pits. Copper ores, found with the uranium, necessitated the addition of a copper circuit to the concentrator. Copper concentrates containing 12,981 pounds of copper were also produced. Rum Jungle was the largest single industrial enterprise in the Northern Territories and, as such, was an important economic and social factor in this sparsely settled tropical region. To stretch out the life of this enterprise for the above reasons, and with the added possibility that the uranium market might improve, the Commonwealth mined out and stockpiled 650,000 tons of ore containing 9.6 lb of U,O, per ton, which is sufficient to sustain the treatment plant at 200 tpd until about 1971. In the plant, uranium is recovered from solution by solvent ex- traction. Current output is being stockpiled pending suitable market conditions.
