As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

After Nobel invented dynamite, blasts were carried out by trial and error, without the use of equations based on the fundamental principles of Chemistry and Physics, although everyone accepted that shock waves were involved; but no equations were available to calculate their intensity. Around 1950 however, M.A. Cook proposed a procedure to calculate the thermochemistry of an explosive, and thus evaluate theenergy released during the explosion of a fully confined explosive. Some blasters then began to use theEnergy Factor; the latter, however, does not subdivide the energy into its three kinds of activities necessaryfor a successful blast, as demonstrated in 1968 by reference 2, namely i) the shock wave which weakensthe rock; ii) the stress field SS which fully fragments the rock; and iii) the release of the stress SS whichcauses the fully fragmented rock to burst out with the velocity necessary to move the rock into the muckpile. The article explains that the way to achieve a successful blast is by insuring that the explosive energy divides properly into the weakening action of the shock wave which is necessary to prevent large collar blocks and toe, and into adequate stress field intensity SS which is necessary to obtain good fragmentation size distribution at the crusher, as well as adequate burst out rock movement to achieve easy mucking.

The petrology and age of mid Cretaceous to Palaeogene marine volcanics may provide important clues to the palaeogeography of the period, particularly for tectonic elements and events outboard of the Papuan Basin. This initial survey of known marine volcanics of this age reveals a paucity of reliable data on isotopic ages, geochemistry and syngenetic mineralisation on virtually all units. Existing data allows a tentative subdivision of known marine volcanics into either MORB-like early Palaeogene rifts/ marginal basins, early Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks overlying ?Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene fore-arc/marginal basin crust, late Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks, and mid to Late Cretaceous ensialic rift rocks. Due to lack of data, some units are difficult to classify into these categories.

The El Sauzal gold-silver deposit is a high-sulfidation, epithermal precious-metals deposit hosted by an east-dipping sequence of dacitic and rhyolitic pyroclastic and debris-flow units of probable Oligocene age. Total gold production since startup in late 2004 is approximately 450,000 oz. of gold. Above the sulfide boundary gold is mainly disseminated as small grains interstitial to alunite, kaolinite and quartz. The majority of the ore is found in quartz-alunite-kaolinite altered rock that mantles tabular to irregular silicic cores of vuggy, residual quartz ±kaolinite ±dickite. Grade domains are modelled as subhorizontal to east and southeast-dipping. Higher-grade domains cut across alteration zones and also coincide with transitions from vuggy quartz to quartz-alunite-kaolinite. The highest grades are commonly found marginal to vuggy quartz in transitional, hematite-rich quartz-kaolinite and quartz-alunite-kaolinite rock.

EARLY workers in the field have established that the diffusion of nitrogen follows normal diffusion laws. Concentration-penetration data from layer analyses of reasonably pure iron specimens nitrided in an atmosphere of CO-NH, are given in the literature,' and were utilized to calculate diffusion constants for nitrogen. The diffusion of nitrogen in y-iron may be represented approximately by the equation D - 1.07x10-' e-:".'m'"'r The diflusion coefficients, D, given by this relation represent mean values, since carburization occurred simultaneously with nitriding. The rate of diffusion in a-iron has been determined from calculations based on data obtained by measuring the internal friction of samples at each of several frequencies and temperatures.' The expression for the diffusion of nitrogen in a-iron derived from these experiments is D= 1.4x10-1 e-it tudent Increasing carbon content decreases the diffusion of nitrogen in a-iron.3 Oxygen, either dissolved or combined, has been shown' to exert a marked influence on the diffusion of nitrogen from a nitriding atmosphere. D values increase rapidly with increasing amount of dissolved oxide in the metal, but diffusion is completely inhibited if preliminary oxidation has produced the slightest trace of iron oxide on the surface. Diffusion coefficients have also been calculated from permeability and solubility data,' but these values are of questionable accuracy since the boundary conditions assumed may not actually exist. Experimental Method The method selected for determining the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen in a-iron in the present investigation was the so-called fractional saturation method. This method consists of heating the specimen in an atmosphere of H2-NH8 mixtures of known composition for a predetermined time. Following this treatment, the specimen is analyzed for nitrogen; and the diffusion coefficient is calculated from a known relationship of the fractional saturation, time of diffusion, and dimensions of the specimen. This relation is based on a solution of Fick's second law and assumes that the surface of the specimen immediately reaches a given concentration which remains constant during the diffusion anneal. Tabular solutions are available4-5 and provide the relationship between fractional saturation and the quantity \/Dt /a, where D is the diffusion coefficient in cm2 per sec, t is the time of the diffusion anneal in seconds, and a, in the present experiments, is the half-thickness of the slab specimen in cm. The method is adequately discussed elsewhere.9-10 Material The material for this study consisted of 3/32 in. thick (0.24 cm) carbonyl iron plate. The major impurities in this iron are oxygen and carbon, which are readily removed by long time high temperature treatment in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. In order to reduce the diffusion anneal time for saturation runs, some of this material was rolled to a thickness of 0.015 in. (0.038 cm) prior to the hydrogen treatment. The Cortez gold mine is located in Lander County, NR, about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Elko. Cortez Gold Mines (CGM) is a joint venture between Placer Dome US Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corp. (40%). The claims that supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits, all operated by the joint venture. Other deposits outside the CGM claim area include Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain-Eureka Trend. History Mining in the Cortez district began in 1862 with the discovery of high-grade silver ores. Grades in the hundreds of ounces per ton occurred in an area 7 km (4.5 miles) southeast of the current CGM mill site. Underground mining through the Garrison and Arctic tunnels provided the bulk of the ore production between 1864 and 1895. To a lesser extent, the Mill Canyon area also supplied ore until 1930.

Four companies mined ball clay in four states during 2005. They included H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys), Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.32 Mt (1.45 million st) valued at $53.3 million, based on the results of a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. Production in 2004 was 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) valued at $54.1 million. Tennessee was the leading ball clay producer state with 61 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky.

The chains of armored face conveyor (AFCs) are constantly in contact with water and wet coal, which results in a significant proportion of unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment due to corrosion. While reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the most prevalent water treatment methods for reducing salinity and dissolved solids in coal mining, its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains has not been well studied. This work studies the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. Immersion tests followed by surface micromorphology analysis and corrosion indices indicate that the RO water increased the corrosion rate of the AFC chains due to the reduced tendency of preventive films on the chains.

Magnesium and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitionai point has been set at 2 25°C by Schmidl for single crystals, and at 250°C by Morel1 and Hanawalt² for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on poly-crystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional tempelature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheet† over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig I. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Har-greaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Har-greaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The Derby and Alexander Claim, located within the Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), has placer gold resources. No lode deposits are known within the area, but lode gold deposits are found within 1 1/2 mi of the WSA. In additon, rock units which contain lode gold deposits north of the WSA are found within the northern portion of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), CA-030-402, encompasses 4,623 acres of BLM administered public land in Trinity County, California, about 35 mi west-northwest of Redding (fig. 1). Major access to the Tunnel Ridge vicinity is by U.S. Highway 299. Ac-cess to the WSA boundary is by a secondary paved road from Junction City and several light duty dirt and gravel roads (fig. 2). The WSA is on the southwest slope of Weaver Bally Mountain. The topography is rugged with moderate to steep slopes; elevations range from about 1,600 ft to 5,900 ft.

The east span of the 3.5 km long SF-Oakland Bay Bridge is supported by different types of foundations along its span. Starting from the west, its first 460 m section comprising twin concrete box-girders is supported by sands and rock on Yerba Buena Island. A 620 m long steel suspension span then bridges a 25 m deep channel that is formed in sediments overlying rock. Twin concrete box girder structures, each 2.4 km long, complete the stretch over the remainder of San Francisco Bay to the engineered earth fill landing at its east end. For most of its length, the Skyway bridges water 3 to 10 m deep over soft surficial Young Bay Mud. The foundation types include spread footings with hold-downs, steel and concrete piles that are set in drilled rock sockets up to 3 m in diameter and 2.5 m diameter steel tubular piles driven to penetrations of up to 100 m. The design and construction-related considerations are presented. The different foundation types, influences of the site geology and earthquake demands on the substructures are discussed. The seismic motions of the bridge superstructures and substructures, as well as the depth-varying soil motions, influenced the foundation design. Together with performance-based design criteria, including post-earthquake footing displacement limits, these seismic demands influenced various aspects of the foundation design, including the use of battered and vertical piles.

The Building Research Establishment installed a base load cell in a driven cast-in-place pile prior to it being tested under vertical load. The monitored base loads were found to be significantly less than could have been predicted by current design methods. The less than expected capacity was attributed to the drilling out procedure. An electro-level system installed in a second similarly formed pile, provided detailed information on the performance of the pile under lateral load. The information obtained was used to check several current design methods for laterally loaded piles. The findings show the potential dangers of attempting to improve design parameters from only limited performance data.

Since its inception in 1990, improved metallurgical processing technologies, coupled with mine planning enhancements and improved geological knowledge, have sequentially enabled better efficiencies and economies of scale at the Macraes Gold Project. Over a period of 11 years, processing enhancements have been achieved by: +        increasing mill throughput, from one million tonnes per year, to current throughput of 3.9 million tonnes per year; +        improving recovery rates, from 70 % to approx 84 %; and +        performance enhancement through innovation, eg the use of kerosene to combat ClL pregrobbing. Future processing improvements have been identified in optimising the ore feed and processing flowsheet. The introduction of the autoclave has transformed the process flow form a traditional 'mill headgrade and tonnes milled' operation, to a 'sulphur/gold ratio and sulphur tonnes oxidised' operation.

"This paper presents results of a study undertaken to determinethe feasibility of mining plains overburdens with bucket wheel excavators. Based on extensive geotechnical testing of overburdens under study, the relations between material geotechnical properties and its cuttability were defined. The properties with the highest correlations to the cuttability werethen used to develop the material diggability classification. This classification may be used for identification of overburdens and coals mineable by bucket wheel excavators.IntroductionLow cost of mining and high productivity can be achieved when mining unconsolidated soils and soft rocks with bucket wheel excavators. As a result this mining equipment will likely be introduced into plains coal mines. At present there are plans to use a bucketwheel excavator (BWE) in at least one mine by the end of this decade. Unfortunately, the performance of a BWE deteriorates rapidly with the increasing strength of mined material. To avoid costly misapplication, material diggability must be defined in advance of an application (i.e. the force required at the cutting edges of BWE buckets must be quantified). Correct definition of material diggability permits reliable selection of a BWE, or may indicate unsuitability of this equipment for a particular application.The reported studyu i was undertaken to investigate the diggability of typical prairie overburdens and thus provide a guidance for likely future applications of bucketwheel equipment. Investigations concentrated on the parts of overburden most likely to create problems for a BWE mining. These are defined in Table 1. At present, thin layers of the two investigated materials (samples K and L) are mined by a BWE in an oil sand mine, after being loosened by blasting."

In conjunction with the research study of the Coronation Mine recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geo-logical Sciences and coordinated by the Geological Survey of Canada, Canadian Aero Service Limited per-formed a detailed, low-altitude air-borne survey over a block of ground encompassing the .Coronation Mine. The in-phase/out-of-phase air-borne electromagnetic data are com-pared with "horizontal-loop" ground data with reference to: size and nature of conductors detected; criteria in selection of targets for drilling. In-formation provided by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company on their drilling of the numerous conductors in the area is employed in this comparison. The merits of combining a sensitive airborne magnetometer with an air-borne electromagnetic unit are discussed. The magnetic data are considered very important in assessing conductors as prospects for commercial sulphida deposits in this area of numerous electromagnetic anomalies. Collaboration between education providers is the key to long-term sustainability and improved quality in mining education. The mining industry is now, more than ever, an industry doing business on a global basis. Staff are recruited by global mining companies in many different countries and can find themselves deployed anywhere in the world. The mining engineer of tomorrow must be willing to take on this international challenge, and must be educated to a level where he or she has a comprehensive grounding in technical aspects of mining engineering, but also a well-founded appreciation of management, social, environmental and cultural issues that may be encountered around the world. In order to deliver such an education, academic providers must collaborate at both a national and international level. This paper provides an overview of progress that has been made in Australia through the national joint venture ? Min¬ing Education Australia (MEA). Supported by the mining industry in Australia, through the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MEA has been operational since 2007 and is seeing the development of a range of innovative courses and delivery methods, together with a high level of staff cooperation across the country. MEA has also commenced some international teaching initiatives that are seen as a catalyst for a far greater degree of international collaboration in the future. Such activity is not only to the benefit of the students who are taught by experts from around the world, but it also ensures that individual univer¬sity programs remain viable in terms of staffing numbers and financial performance. The paper also presents some statistics on recent upward trends in mining engineering student numbers from around the world, in response to the global shortage of mining engineers.
