The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy construction equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. One hundred and eighty nine operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, the need to perform a larger survey to further substantiate the outcome, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

Approximately six hundred air sample measurements were taken at several U.S. underground metal/nonmetal mines in 1998 and 1999. This air sampling effort was organized by the Nevada Mining Association to evaluate mining conditions and to evaluate the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Proposed Rule on Diesel Particulate Matter Exposure of Underground Metal and Non-metal Miners. MSHA’s proposed air sampling method, NIOSH Method 5040, was tested under controlled conditions and under normal mining conditions. Unfortunately, NvMA sampling results have indicated that carbonaceous rock dust, oil mists and even cigarette smoking create severe sampling interference problems for NIOSH 5040.The main conclusion was that NIOSH 5040 did not distinguish between DPM and other airborne carbon particulate. Thus, it is not a reliable method of accurately and unequivocally measuring DPM in underground metal/nonmetal mines.

Exposure to vibration induced in and around underground mine’s exploration is a major concern to vehicles operators. Most of these drivers over time develop serious spinal musculoskeletal and discs problems causing low back injuries. The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance and dynamic response of driver/operator when subjected to different levels of vibration due to rough road conditions depicted in a mine field. The second purpose of the paper is to quantify the energy transmission in the presence of seat padding with special characteristics and active suspension. Using experimental testing data collected at NIOSH/PRL (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/ Pittsburgh Research Laboratory) along with model simulation algorithms developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago we investigated how acceleration transfer functions as well as absorbed power affects the different parts of the body. To this end, we used a previously validated human model which includes the head, torso segments and legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experimental data at the UIC Vehicle Technology Laboratory. The absorbed power and energy transmitted to the body are used as an index measure to assess the viability of the different seat padding’s and active seat suspension control strategies.

Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Southern field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine water problem in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18).4 Tim Southern field is in Carbon, Schuylkill, Dauphin, and Lebanon Counties, in eastern Pennsylvania; has an area of 200 square miles; is 70 miles long from Mauch Chunk on the east to the Susquehanna River on the west; and is 1 to 6 miles wide. In the Southern field are 37 underground water pools containing 37312 billion gallons of water (5). Most of these pools overflow to the surface because the barrier pillars controlling them are effective under existent, conditions. Abandonment of mines in the Southern field has resulted in the hooding of 34 percent of the field. The largest tonnage of reserves of anthracite lies in this field, where mining conditions are most difficult. Large reserves of anthra¬cite underlie the abandoned mine workings, and before a great part of these reserves can be developed and extracted, the abandoned workings must be unwatered and kept drained (5).

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. Atualmente, tecidos de fibras sintéticas como a aramida (Kevlar®) e o polietileno (Dyneema®) têm sido os preferidos para proteção balística contra munições leves, e para integrar sistemas de proteção contra calibres superiores, como o 7,62 mm. Porém, por apelos econômicos, ambientais e da disponibilidade limitada destes produtos, materiais alternativos têm sido testados. Neste cenário, destacam-se os compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais, que têm demonstrado bom desempenho balístico. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho individual de compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais de curauá, quando submetidos ao impacto balístico com munição 7,62 mm. Foram executados ensaios balísticos, medindo-se a energia do projétil absorvida pelos materais, e os resultados tratados estatisticamente por Anova e teste de Tukey. Mostrou-se que estes compósitos têm potencial para substituir as fibras sintéticas em sistemas de blindagem para proteção pessoal, com a vantagem de serem materiais leves, de baixo custo, nacionais, de ampla disponibilidade e ambientalmente corretos.

On July 24, 2002, a nonfatal entrapment accident occurred at the Quecreek #1 Mine, Black Wolf Coal Company, when an active mining section inadvertently cut into a flooded abandoned mine. This incident, and the dramatic rescue which ensued, brought national attention to a common problem in the coal mining industry. Since 1995, there have been more than 100 inundations at coal mines in the United States. Unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete mapping of older abandoned mines is typically responsible. Serious problems associated with accidental discharges of fluid mine waste material (slurry) and water from coal refuse disposal facilities have resulted from similar causes. Recent problems related to the inaccurate location of old abandoned mine works have increased the interest in the use of conventional and emerging drilling and geophysical techniques for detection of air-filled and water-filled cavities. The United States Congress has committed significant funding toward investigating the applicability of these technologies. MSHA actively promotes the use of the best available technology to minimize the significant adverse safety and environmental consequences associated with unplanned breakthroughs and inundations. This paper provides background information and a general summary of the MSHA-sponsored field demonstration projects which are currently in progress. Potential benefits and limitations are discussed. The need for field verification/ground-truthing is emphasized. Under appropriate conditions, geophysical methods can be effectively integrated into a comprehensive field exploration program.

Rehabilitation approaches, methods and outcomes have changed markedly over the last 100 years, and especially over the last 20 years. Alluvial gold dredges have moved from creating a legacy of boulder fields and ponds to radiata pine plantations and highly productive dairy pastures. The rehabilitated farmland has reduced flood risk, improved drainage and efficient paddock design. The next challenge is to include areas of environmental diversity in these projects, for example, shelter belts, patches of native trees, and wetlands that were part of the original landscape.   West Coast coal mines have also come from a legacy of leaving it to nature to rehabilitate damage by mining to establishing native ecosystems or plantation forests. Developments in techniques at Stockton Mine are used to illustrate the changes in approach to rehabilitation of native forest and tussock heathland ecosystems. The proposed Cypress Mine will adopt a full range of avoidance, remediation through rehabilitation, and off-site mitigation techniques in a æthree-prongedÆ approach.   We propose a coordinated extractive industry approach to mitigate for the impacts of mining on native ecosystems and achieve nationally important conservation benefits that individual projects cannot afford. This approach is particularly beneficial in New Zealand, as our native ecosystems must be actively managed to conserve native plants and animals. Currently, some important species and ecosystems are not being actively managed for conservation.

Las etapas de cierre comprenden el procedimiento de diseño, ejecución y control-seguimiento y como tal, contienen un sistema de seguridad (SHEB) en las operaciones de la mina. El principal objetivo del proceso de cierre es la estabilización a largo plazo del entorno físico, químico y socioeconómico en las áreas afectadas por la actividad minera para asi proteger la salud, el ecosistema y reducir los efectos negativos en el ecosistema. Finalmente, es más factible ejecutar el plan de cierre durante la operación de la mina que cuando no es económicamente viable.

Thallium is an uncommon heavy metal that may be found in concentrations that exceed regulatory limits in mining influenced water associated with processing cadmium, copper, gold, lead, and zinc ores. This study evaluated cost-effective modifications to lime precipitation treatment to reduce thallium concentrations to below the EPA drinking water MCL of 2 ppb. The oxidative precipitation of Tl+ to Tlß+ by potassium permanganate was explored for thallium removal at low concentrations (1 ppm initial thallium). Laboratory batch tests were performed to evaluate the removal of thallium from synthetic solutions. Three ratios of potassium permanganate to oxidizable metals in solution were used (one-half, one and two times stoichiometry). Thallium was removed to less than 1 ppb for all stoichiometric ratios evaluated within 10 minutes of reaction. The efficacy of oxidative precipitation for thallium removal is presented.

This presentation shows the results of laboratory and field tests to date for the NCHRP project entitled "Downdrag on Bitumen-coated Piles". This project required to test a variety of bitumens in the laboratory to determine their properties and then to establish a field testing program to verify the bitumens effectiveness. Figure 1 shows an organizational chart that gives an overview of the agencies involved in the project. The first part describes the laboratory testing program in which bitumen samples of various types were obtained from a variety of manufacturers. Initially, classification tests were performed to verify the manufacturers' specifications. Additional tests were then developed and performed to determine the bitumens behavior under the various conditions that they may be exposed to in the field. The test results were analyzed and their usefulness for design purposes were determined. The test results are presented in either graphical or tabular form. The second part describes the field testing program which was designed to test the effectiveness of various bitumens under a wide range of soil, temperature, and construction conditions. The first site was in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where a construction project was to take place in the winter of 1989-90. This was ideal for the cold temperature extreme that was needed. The soil conditions were conducive to downdrag problems: an embankment placed over soft clay underlain by dense sand resulting in end-bearing piles. The other site was in New Orleans, Louisiana. The part of the project involving this downdrag study was to be carried out in the summer of 1990. The hot summer temperatures and extremely soft soil conditions (resulting in friction piles) gave the other extreme needed for this study. Each site is discussed in

En este sentido, el método tradicional de cuadros de madera en la minería subterránea sin rieles quedó desplazado, surgiendo alternativas modernas como el empleo de arcos metálicos revestidos con concreto armado, el bulonado con diferentes tipos de pernos de roca y la aplicación del Sholcrete. Entre estos últimos, la mina Cobriza ha desarrollado un nuevo método de sostenimiento denominado "Shot Fer", el cual satisface el desarrollo de las labores mineras, asegura la estabilidad permanente de las labores subterráneas en terreno deleznable, disminuye los altos costos unitarios en el sostenimiento de las labores subterráneas y garantiza la seguridad contra los accidentes que pueda sufrir el personal que trabaja en la perforación y en las operaciones de sostenimiento.

"During the past three years the Bureau of Mines has carried on an extensive research program at the Rolla Laboratory for the beneficiation of low-grade Arkansas baixites by ore dressing methods. As a result of this study a 50-ton pilot mill was designed and constructed at Bauxite, Arkansas, by the Bureau to continue the investigation on a semi-commercial scale. The built both to reduce the experimental work to practice and to obtain operating data that cannot be determined by laboratory or small scaleTen samples of bauxitic material were mined and stockpiled at the plant site to ensure an ample supply of material for milling in the pilot plant. These samples were obtained from various bauxite deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Arkansas. The deposits were selected as typical of a wide range of bauxitic material which would necessitate treatment under different conditions and by various concentration methods. All of the samples contained a higher silica content than permissible in Bayer-grade bauxite and several contained so much iron oxide that the available alumina content of the ore was mate¬rially lowered. From data obtained by milling operations on these ten samples, milling characterietics of most of the ores in the district should be predictable. This paper summarizes the results obtained in the laboratory testing of representative samples of each stock pile, and the results of small scale continuous testing of the composite sample of the ten stock piles in the gravity-flotation pilot plant at the Rolla Laboratory."

An analysis of the semiconductor injection laser is presented which is based on a phenomenological model using device and material parameters. The intent of the laser threshold analysis is not to predict from theory the actual threshold current density but rather to provide a logical means of interpreting experimental results. The device and material parameters have been selected such that they describe both the threshold conditions and quantum efficiency of the lasev. A technique is proposed whereby the current required to obtain a population inversion is predicted from device 1-V characteristics. Experimental data are presented which support the analysis. THIS investigation is concerned with the characteristics of GaAs lasers fabricated in this laboratory. However, the assumptions used in these calculations should not limit their application to GaAs alone. It is felt that the analysis is sufficiently general to be useful in describing the operation of other semiconductor-laser materials. ANALYSIS heavily doped semiconductors to be considered. The absorption and/or generation of optical radiation may be completely specified in terms of q(E) and the probability functions f,,(E) and f,(E) which define the occupancy of the valence-band and conduction-band levels, respectively. Occupational exposure to whole body vibration has long been associated with increased incidence of low back pain and low back injuries1. A number of studies have investigated transmissibility of seat pan vibration 5, 6. While transmissibility has been well researched, the mechanism by which vibration may induce injury has not been thoroughly studied. Winter et al. identified increased reflex response delay after vibration exposure and speculated that muscular fatigue may be the cause of this increase9. However, a mechanism has yet to be demonstrated completely. A potential mechanism that may explain the increased risk is neuromotor habituation. Muscle spindle organs have been shown in the extremities to be sensitive to muscle and tendon vibration. Rapid length changes in muscle have been shown to result in kinesthetic illusions as the regular firing of the muscle spindles is interpreted as muscle lengthening4, 7. These illusions have also been demonstrated in the paraspinal musculature2. With removal of vibration, research in the extremities has demonstrated increased positioning errors, probably due to neuromotor habituation8. In this research, it has been hypothesized that neuromotor habituation after exposure to occupational vibration will increase positioning errors. It is further hypothesized that these errors can be shown to be linked to increased reflex response time. Such increased reflex response time could, in turn, decrease spinal stability and increase low back injury risk. Methods Both positioning error and sudden load response were measured before and after exposure to 20 minutes of 5 Hz, 0.223 m/s2 RMS seat pan vibration. Subjects were asked to sit on an unpadded seat without a backrest. Throughout the whole body vibration period, subjects were instructed to put their hands on a stable hand rest and feet on an adjustable stable footrest. The subjects were instructed to assume a comfortable and relax sitting posture for the duration of the exposure. Positioning error was measured using an active-active reposition sense protocol. Electromagnetic markers (Motionstar, Ascension Tech, Burlington, VT) were used to track trunk motion. With markers attached to the skin at the T10 vertebra, the S1 vertebra and manubrium, trunk flexion (the angle from vertical of the line connecting T10 and S1) and lumbar curvature (the difference in inclination of the T10 and S1 markers) were tracked. In the reposition sense protocol, subjects were asked to maintain an upright trunk flexion and to rotate their pelvis and lumbar curvature to assume a target lumbar curvature. In the protocol subjects completed training trials, where they were asked to match their lumbar curvature using a visual display, and assessment trials, where they were asked to reproduce the lumbar curvature from memory. After two initial training trials, training trials and assessment trials were alternated for a total of 3 assessment trials. Reposition error was defined as the absolute difference between the target lumbar curvature and the lumbar curvature the subject assumed during the assessment trials.
