Electroslag remelting is widely used to produce various special steels, mainly because of its ability to provide high cleanliness and excellent homogeneity of ingot. Undoubtedly an optimal slag plays a key role in removing inclusions and enhancing the mechanical properties of a specific special steel. In order to improve the metallurgical performance of the slag in electroslag refining of die steel, a variety of slags have already been developed using traditional trial-and-error methods. Nonetheless, these slags may not be inherently optimal for the specific requirements of actual die steel refining processes. In this work, we have designed a CaF2-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO quinary slag system using genetic algorithms method aiming to remove the existing large size inclusions (D and Ds type) in high quality die steel. The comprehensive effects of five components (CaF2, CaO, Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO) were studied based on existing fundamental theory. The slag composition was screened considering the parameters such as melting point, electrical conductivity, calcium ion concentration, and appropriate viscosity etc. Furthermore, the candidate optimal slag was applied in the industrial production of die steel by electroslag remelting method. The detection results indicate that majority large inclusions (D and Ds type) have been successfully removed, showing significant advantage to traditional slags. This result has demonstrated the genetic method to be efficient and reliable. In addition, depending on the personalised demand of other steel and alloys, this method allows for the adjustment of the screening frameworks and processes to develop the candidate optimal slags. This method has not been reported previously in the field of electroslag composition design, and compared with the traditional trial-and-error method, the new method will save a lot of time and experimental costs.

"In a preliminary report made a year ago it was shown that certain minerals when subjected to heating with water under high pressure and temperature were shattered upon the sudden release of that pressure. The main feature in which the results of this method differ from those of conventional grinding is in the differential effect obtained. The more metallic minerals, and hence the valuable minerals, are shattered more readily than are the gangue minerals. In other words, explosive shattering is unique among possible methods for comminuting an ore in that it wastes the least energy on the useless part of the ore. Explosive shattering, therefore, offers possibilities as a means for reducing grinding costs, arid it is this potential advantage of the process that makes it worthy of further experimental study. The first part of this paper is devoted to a study of the mechanism of the process; the, second part reports results obtained in toots on a selected list of ores to exhibit some of the advantages of explosive shattering."

Square Butte has no history of mineral development or production. Surface mapping, radiometric surveys and chemical analyses of rock samples reveal no mineral potential. The area has a speculative potential for petroleum and natural gas. INTRODUCTION The Square Butte Instant Wilderness Study Area, in Chouteau County, Montana, consists of 1,946 acres (788 ha) about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fort Benton and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Lewistown (fig. 1). This study was performed under provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is responsible for regional geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which determines the mineral potential of existing mines, prospects, or mineralized areas.

La metodología aplicada es la comparación entre costos y beneficios entre las situaciones “con proyecto” (obra ejecutada) y “sin proyecto” (situación actual), de forma que en un futuro, la construcción del camino estudiado posibilitará el abastecimiento de insumos a los yacimientos ubicados en el Valle del Cura, provincia de San Juan.

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. A Loss of Strength of Gold Sulfide Concentrate Before Grinding and Cyanidation Using Magnetic Impulse Treatment Gold recovery from sulfide concentrates is going with cyanidation usually. The fine grinding to 95 per cent -0.020 mm is required for refractory concentrates, in which gold encapsulated by sulfides. According energy consumption is 10 and more kW h/ton. At this paper we suggested to use magnetic-impulse treatment with small energy consumption 0.1-0.2 kW h/ton for loss of sulfide strength before grinding and cyanidation. The object of studies was the gold-pyrite flotation concentrate which was produced from ores at the Kumtor Mine, Kyrgyzstan. The concentrate composition, physic-mechanical properties and loss of strength mechanism were studied there. The tested concentrate assayed, per cent: 62.5 pyrite, 10 feldspar, 10 mica, 5 quarts, 5 carbonates, 4 haematite and another. Haematite has intimate intergrowth with pyrite ? partially with quarts. The magnetic susceptibility of haematite and less pyrite causes in these grains and mineral complex the effect of magneticstriction. As a result numbers of deformations are increased and minerals and gold are also exposed. Lateral and longitudinal strains in the minerals by magneticstriction were calculated in this work. By quantitative analysis of pyrite mono fractions were showed next micro impurities: alumina, arsenic, nickel and others elements. These micro impurities are generated a charged dislocation, cracks and micro cracks. The inter-granular links at a boundary of haematite-pyrite, pyrite-quarts, haematite-quarts have disintegrated. The dislocation is depended from mineral modulus elasticity. It was determined an indicator of mineral electro-mechanic sensitivity which characterises a conversion of electro-magnetic energy to mechanic energy. Pyrite has most dielectric constant and electro-mechanic sensitivity as haematite and quarts. The dislocations in pyrite are account for clacks and a loss of mineral strength. Size analysis of the flotation concentrate after magnetic-impulse treatment is shown the increasing the content of thin fractions by comparison no treated concentrate. Magnetic-impulse treatment has increased the effect of the next fine grinding too. The electronic microscopy has confirmed a loss of strength of gold sulfide concentrate. The gold recovery by cyanidation increased too after preliminary magnetic-impulse treatment of concentrate by laboratory tests. The magnetic-impulse concentrate studies at the Kumtor plant have showed that a recovery gold increase in the processing of cyanidation. The consumption of energy also reduced.

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2005 was an estimated 760 kt (838,000 st), valued at $44 million free-on-board plant. This was below the 2004 volume and was the second year of decline in a row. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar. Shipments of glass containers were about the same as in 2004. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continued to increase, taking the place of U.S.-produced goods and the feldspar required to make them. For 2005, 80 percent of the ceramic tiles sold and 50 percent of the plumbing fixtures sold in the United States were imported. Since 2000, manufacturing plant closures in the plumbing fixtures industry have reduced the demand for feldspar and feldspar-silica mixtures by 100 kt (110,000 st). Increased demand from the ceramic tile industry has partially offset the lost volume.

This paper on the out-and-fill method of mining is one of a series on mining methods published by the United States Bureau of Mines. It has been compiled chiefly from recent publications of the bureau describing in detail mining methods and costs at various mines. Other sources of information were the technical press, the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the Mines Haudbook, and company reports. References other than those mentioned in Table 1, which lists the mines entering into this discussion and gives general data regarding them, are given in the body of the paper. The authors wish to acknowledge the kind assistance of many operating officials, either through correspondence or in the course of numerous visits to their mines. DEFINITION OF CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The out-and-fill method of stoping is that method in which relatively small sections or slices are taken successively from the lower surface of a block of ground by open-stoping methods, the broken ore being removed and each section filled with waste material before the next is mined. This definition excludes shrinkage stoping, even with subsequent filling; it excludes square-set and fill methods; it excludes the Mitchell slice method, which may be classed as underhand square-setting; it excludes the systematic use of stull sets and filling, which is a variation of square-setting; it excludes any method involving the caving of the ore, walls, or overburden during the process of extraction, although caving may be allowed to take place when the waste fill is withdrawn for use in other stopes; and it excludes any open-stope method without filling. Through variations, which will be discussed later, the cut-and-fill method merges into shrinkage stoping, open stoping, or square-setting. The use of casual timber support, such as props, stulls, or timber cribs for holding up weak portions of the back does not constitute a change from cut-and-fill to square-set mining.

Saganoseki smelter & refinery operated two flash smelting furnaces, producing a combined 330,000 metric tons per year (hereinafter mtpy) of copper. [n 1996, however, it successfully shifted to a single fumace operation while maintaining production at the same level. Since then, the production capacity has been further increased to the present 470,000 mtpy by technological improvements. Also, in order to reduce the converter load which represents a bottleneck in efforts to increase production, the matte grade was gradually increased and currently runs at 65 to 66% attaining the low copper content in the slag (hereinafter slag loss) of 0.7 to 0.8%. This ' paper introduces some improvements, recent operation results and thermodynamic analyses.

A new type of the cast in situ piles is introduced. The installation of the new pile is based on a pushing in/gaining back procedure. A temporarily closed tip element with square shaped cross-section being attached to an upper circular shaft tube is vibrated into the soil. The steel armature is embedded. Concrete is poured into the tube and, the whole structure is gained back while the tip is in opened position. The width of the tip is less than or equal to 40 cm. The maximum length of the pile is about of 14 m. Great bearing capacity is resulted from the double soil compaction effect. No spoil is generated and, the pile construction can be controlled. The paper presents the results of four loading test at three sites with some soil data.

Riveting operations in aircraft manufacturing involves the use of power tools for manually drilling holes for the rivets, power drills for the setting of the holes for the rivets, as well as rivet guns to drive and set the rivets. To close the rivet, the rivet is driven against a metallic bar commonly called a “bucking bar”. The bucking bars are typically held firmly to increase the quality of the riveting, as well as keep the bucking bar from “dancing” against the metal piece being riveted. Thus, employees in aircraft manufacturing involved in riveting are exposed to hand-arm vibration from several sources, and epidemiological evidence suggests that vibration-related musculoskeletal disorders are associated with long term exposure to riveting tasks in the aircraft manufacturing of aircraft.1,2 Recently, tungsten technology has been introduced into aircraft manufacturing for bucking bars, which are heavier than traditional steel bucking bars of the same size. Rivet guns with tungsten pistons instead of steel pistons have also recently been introduced with the objective of reducing vibration exposure to the riveter. The objective of this study was to assess vibration characteristics of steel and tungsten bucking bars and rivet guns to identify the combination that simultaneously reduced the combined exposure to both the “riveter” and “bucker”. Methods Vibration (10g tri-axial accelerometer, Biometrics S2-10G-MF Series 2) was measured from eight experienced employees using seven different rivet guns on size 6 rivets, with the same person bucking for all subjects. Vibration was also measured on two different bucking bars for these same eight subjects, with the same person driving the rivets using the various rivet guns. The rivet guns consisted of three E4 steel piston guns with different RPMs (Guns A-E4, B-E4, C-E4), an E4 vibration dampened rivet gun (Gun D-E4D), an E3 steel piston rivet gun (Gun E-E3) and an E3 and E4 tungsten piston rivet guns (Guns F-E3T and G-E4T). The bucking bars were made of 90% tungsten (1694g) and cold-rolled steel (843g), and were the same shape and size. A two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed on the vibration (mean frequency weighted resultant acceleration) on both the rivet gun side and the bucking bar side, and mean rankings were used to assess the vibration simultaneously for the rivet gun and bucking bars to investigate which combinations provided the lowest vibration exposure. Results Frequency weighted resultant acceleration was significantly lower on the E3 tungsten (F-E3T) rivet gun than the E4 steel piston (B-E4) and the E4 tungsten piston (G-E4T) rivet guns (Figure 1). When measuring vibration on the bucking bar, the E4 (A-E4) steel piston rivet gun resulted in lower vibration on the bucking bars than the E4 tungsten piston (G-E4T) and E4 vibration dampened (D-E4D) rivet guns (Figure 2). Additionally, use of tungsten bucking bars resulted in a 35% decrease in resultant frequency weighted acceleration than when using steel bucking bars.

Design and development of the world?s largest flotation cell was completed in 2002. This was the first 257 m3 flotation cell installed in the mineral industry and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells. This cell has a 50% increase in volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO® Smartcell? flotation machine. In the next few years it is anticipated that 257 m3 flotation cells will be incorporated into rougher-scavenger flotation circuits in many more world class copper sulphide concentrators. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No.250 Smartcell? flotation machine was installed at Minera Los Pelambres in the front of Row 1 in the existing rougher flotation circuit. This cell is followed by nine No. 130 Smartcell? flotation cells. After the successful development phase, this unit has been incorporated as part of a row of No. 250 Smartcell? flotation machines at Minera Los Pelambres. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No. 250 flotation cell, and present a case study of the in-plant equipment testing. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulphide concentrator.

For resources projects with healthy net present value (NPV) and low cash flow volatility, conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis will continue to provide the dominant investment decision-making criteria. However, DCF analysis can be biased because it often applies a single risk-adjusted discount rate (RADR) to compare the value of projects with different risk characteristics. Many of the difficulties with DCF modelling arise from analystsÆ inability to determine appropriate risk discounts and to estimate expected spot prices inputs for the commodities produced over the life of the project. Modern asset pricing (MAP) is a very valuable complement to DCF analysis in addressing some of these issues. Most papers dealing with MAP, however, while academically rigorous, tend not to be explicit in terms of practical application of this methodology in routine project evaluation. This paper has the objective of reviewing the MAP methodology and of demystifying its complexity, by providing a simple but realistic step-by-step evaluation of a mining project, comparing its DCF and MAP NPV values. The paper concludes that MAP provides a minimum, risk-adjusted æfloorÆ value, thus representing a valuable complement to any DCF valuation.

The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

This paper discusses the role of mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans on the beneficiation of arsenopyrite containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite). Adaptation to minerals altered the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed.

The results of bench blasting on quarries, have important influences on the performance of subsequent mining activities such as loading, hauling, crushing, grinding etc., and the total costs of that mine. Drilling and blasting is an important step in mine producing chain and its results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. Within the scope of this study, the three different hydraulic excavators’ working performances have been studied considering the particle size distribution after bench lasting at a quarry in Istanbul Turkey. Five shots have been realized on the quarry and average particle size of muckpile after each shot were assessed by digital image analysis method. Bucket loading times have been measured by stopwatch study after five shots. Excavator bucket loading times were also estimated by bucket loading time estimation formula which was published in ISEE 2007 Conference, Ozdemir et al. 2007. Estimated and measured times have been statistically analyzed and the accuracy rate of formula has been determined for five events.

A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. Three rock tunnel sewer systems are underway in the Chicago Area. (Figure 1) The three are designed to act independently and to be later connected to the future tunnels of the master plan. The tunnel excavation for each of the systems has been completed. One is in the Northwest area within the City being built by the City, known as the Lawrence Ave. System. Another is in the Southwest suburbs, known as the LaGrange-Brookfield Sewer or Southwest 13A, being built by the Sanitary District, the third is in the South suburbs called the Crawford Avenue sewer or Calumet 18-E, Ext. A- being built as a joint venture between the City and the District. The three are similar in that they have the same purpose, the same component parts and their tunnels were constructed in the nigaran limestone using a mechanical mining machine. The purpose of each of the systems is two-fold. First to provide flood relief for existing inadequate sewer systems, and second to reduce the pollution load to the waterways caused by combined sewer overflows. The existing systems in the areas to be relieved are combined sewers built many years ago.
