This report contains the practical application of a computer program for the simulation of ventilation systems under the influence of mine fires and other emergencies on five hardrock mines. The introduction describes the need for such a program, its basic features, and the range of its applicability which is mainly a function of the available ventilation data. The second chapter discusses program modifications, whose necessity or desirability was, during the application, discovered. The following five chapters, which comprise the major portion of the report, give the detailed description of the program application on the five mines. For every one of the selected mines, the ventilation system, the source of the used ventilation data and their preparation for computer simulations are outlined. Based on data for the airflow distribution solely, fumes concentrations in the mines are calculated for several assumed fire locations. Based on data for airflow and pressure distributions, ventilation disturbances caused by fires as well as the resulting fumes concentrations and temperatures are determined. The consequences for escape routes and the possible means to keep them free of fumes are discussed. To investigate the capabilities of the program, other contaminant sources and other potentially dangerous ventilation factors, like fan failures and changed surface temperatures, are simulated also. The results of the calculations have been entered into ventilation plans which makes them easier to scrutinize. All significant computer printouts have been attached.

The roof of the Sishen cave is being mined in order to exploit 6.8Mt of high grade ore. The cavity is filled with quartzite backfill in order to support the roof in the event of collapse. The cave dips at approximately 37o, is 260m along dip and 70m along strike and has a total volume of 261,391m3. GPS and optical monitoring techniques were attempted to detect subsidence but proved to be impractical. The GroundProbe Slope Stability Radar (SSR) uses differential interferometry to measure sub millimetre movement in a rock face. The SSR was applied in a non production situation and detected subsidences of 38mm/day before visual signs of instability were detected. The rate of deformation detected was slowing as a result of the roof coming to rest on underlying backfill. Monitoring during production drilling detected a sudden subsidence of 18.6mm/hour which resulted in the evacuation of personnel from the area. Further inspection of data showed that the rate of deformation was slowing and production was allowed to continue without further incident. The SSR has helped dispel the fears of workers and has proven that subsidence can be accurately measured and delineated with the SSR.

This paper is an attempt to outline the emergence of Augered Cast-ln-Place piles as one of the more economical types of foundation for supporting high-rise buildings and heavily loaded structures recently constructed in the flood plains in and around the Greater Pittsburgh area. To understand the process of selecting foundation types, it is important to understand the general geology of the area and past construction activities that have taken place in the flood plains, especially along the riverbanks, during the last century. The first part of this paper presents a brief description of the general geology of the area; the second part of the paper concentrates on the historical evolution of the use of deep foundations and selected case histories; and the last part presents the results of load tests on large diameter Augered Tremie Concrete (ATC) Piles placed in sandy alluvium which suggests a much larger load-carrying capacity of these piles and also provides an insight into their future application. 2.0 GENERAL GEOLOGY 2.1 Soil Overburden Most of the high rise buildings in the Central Business District as well as along the North Shore and South Side of Pittsburgh are situated in the flood plain at the confluence of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River where their combined flow forms the Ohio River. The flood plain consists of unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age that overlie the bedrock of Pennsylvanian age. These deposits are called alluvium or valley fill, and include moderately to poorly sorted clay, silt, sand, gravel and some boulders. Their thickness varies from zero at the edges of the valley to about 80 feet towards the rivers (Figure 1).

The primary advantage of using oxalic acid is in the formation during leaching of soluble complexes that are both photo-chemically and microbiologically degradable. In this study, chemical leaching and bioleaching methods were used for quartz sand. Using the ANOVA-Yates test technique, the effects of solids rate, temperature and oxalic acid rate were investigated using chemical leaching experiments. Solids rate and temperature were effective parameters on the chemical leaching. After the tests, the removal of Fe2O3 increased to 97.02%. Finally, the iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.0094% Fe2O3 in the leached quartz sand. The effect of pulp density was investigated on the bioleaching experiments. The bioleaching of iron oxides by Aspergillus niger resulted in removal of 47.70% of the total iron in the quartz sand, and suggested that this strain has not a good ability to remove iron impurities from quartz sand in comparison with chemical leaching. The iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.164% Fe2O3 in the bioleached quartz sand.

"INTRODUCTION Pilot-plant studies on processes for converting low-grade domestic manganese ore to high-grade oxide or sulfide products by pyrometailurgical process was initiated at the Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station in 1942. These investigations were given impetus by the possibility of a national shortage of ferro-grade manganese oxide for war needs.The manganese ore employed-in most of the pilot-plant smelting tests was from the manganosiderite-nodule deposits at Chamberlain, S. Dak. This deposit although low-grade, is extensive and represents, the largest reserve of manganese in continental United States. 6/ The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a Carryall mining-conical rolls treatment method that shows promise of making possible economic removal and subsequent beneficiation of the nodule-bearing shales. 7/ Smelting tests were made also on Artillery Peak, Ariz., mill concentrates in the productions of unrefined manganese matte for the steel The pilot-plant smelting program was based upon the fundamental fact that manganese, like copper, will sulfidize and become miscible with FeS. The matte this formed represents the initial smelting step in the pyrometallurgical treatment of the beneficiated ore. The concentrated nodules containing about. 18 percent manganese were smelted with varying amounts of pyrites and appropriate fluxes to produce Mns-FeS mattes containing 16 to 50 percent manganese. When the manganese and iron was completely sulfidized, the mattes contained 16 to 23 percent manganese. Reducing the pyrite resulted, of course, in the selective sulfidization of manganese and the production of a matte containing a correspondingly higher ratio of MnS to FeS. Complete sulfidization smelting produced slags of lower manganese content and hence resulted in higher manganese recoveries in the matte."

"Vanadium and uranium occur widely distributed throughout western Colorado and eastern Utah, and a few deposits have been found in northeastern Arizona and northwestern. New Mexico. The area in which it occurs includes approximately 10,000 square miles and is generally referred to as the vanadium region of Colorado and Utah.The majority of the deposits consist of replacement bodies and impregnations of rare minerals in the lower Morrison formation of Jurassic age. The ore bodies are flat, with irregular margins, and most of them conform to the stratification.The ""rim rock"" topography of the region includes many steep-walled canyons and plateaus, which afford an abundance of outcrops that have been responsible for most of the discoveries of mineralized areas. Delimitation of ore bodies within the areas is accomplished most effectively by core drilling from the surface.The deposits were discovered in 1899 and from 1911 to 1923 wore worked extensively for radioactive uranium ores, principally carnotite.The discovery and marketing of the richer and more cheaply mined pitch-blende ores of the Belgian Congo left the Colorado-Utah deposits without economic importance as sources of radium and uranium, and the region became inactive in 1923. After a period of comparative inactivity, the rising demand of the alloy-steel industry for vanadium renewed interest in the deposits, which were known to contain that metal. By 1938, vanadium production in the area had achieved respectable proportions, and new impetus was given to it by the United States’ entry into World War II in December 1941. In 1942, new treatment plants for vanadium ores were completed in Monticello, Utah, and Durango, Colo. In order to meet the requirements of these and other plants in the region, it became necessary to open new vanadium mines and prepare old onus for production.In an effort to stimulate mining, the Metals Reserve Company initiated a stock-piling program and appointed the united states Vanadium Corporation, to act as its purchasing agent.The extra production was expected to come largely from small, independent operators whose limited funds did not permit them to maintain development and exploratory programs. Study of conditions made it apparent that extensive exploration would be necessary to sustain production, and accordingly the Bureau of Mines initiated an exploratory drilling project on a cooperative basis with the Geological Survey. The principal objects of the work were to enlarge the known ore reserves of the area and, if possible, discover new ones. The results have been gratifying in both respects."

Measurements of the quantity of entrained air within processes have challenged instrumentation developers for years. This is particularly true in the unique and demanding operating environment and applications seen in minerals processing. In minerals processing applications, entrained air plays a role in errors seen within nuclear density gauge measurements and in pumping efficiency. It is also the major component of flotation processes. The measurement of the quantity of entrained air, known as the gas void fraction, can now be performed from the outside of a process pipe through CiDRA?s patented passive sonar array-based technology. Within column cells, the need for a robust, no maintenance, accurate means of measuring the entrained air, known as gas holdup, has resulted in a submersible version of this technology. CiDRA?s meter technology calculates the gas void fraction by first measuring the speed at which naturally occurring sound in the process slurry propagates past an axial array of sensors. These sensors are incorporated in a band that is wrapped around the outside of the pipe, resulting in no process downtimes for installation and unprecedented reliability. A known relationship between this speed of sound and the entrained air captured in the form of bubbles within the slurry is then applied in CiDRA?s meter to calculate the gas void fraction. This paper will present the measurement technology, its operation, its calibration and its application in a variety of gas void fraction and gas holdup measurement situations such as pumping efficiencies, hydrocyclone operation, external sparging, and column cells.

[IN CONNECTION with its work on the conversion of coal to liquid cud gaseous fuels,3 the Bureau of Mines has always striven to keep informed of developments in this and related fields so that unnecessary duplication of effort could be prevented and so that useful ideas, presented in scientific and technical literature, could be evaluated as quickly as possible. Thus the E has compiled expensive literature and patent abstracts on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis4 and hydrogenation d e venation of coal at elevated h temperatures and pressures.5 6 This publication differs from the references just given in that it covers patent applications, which may or may not have been approved for issuance as a patent, and also includes later material. The patent literature is, of courses, a valuable source for new ideas. German patent, have been particularly useful in this field because both processes for the complete conversion of coal to fluid fuels originated in Germany and were thoroughly investigated there because of the shortage or of indigenous fluid fuels. Among the German literature relating to these processes are patent applications. In contrast to the United States, Germany has a system in which applications are published before the final patents are issued. This arrangement permits the public to view all the applications and not just those for which a patent was granted as is done in the U.S. system. When main of the invention are judged not patentable by the German Patent Office, such documents nevertheless may contain useful ideas for scientists and engineers.]

FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...

Wellbore enlargement was tested using hydrazine hydrate in a gas-storage well in Ohio to increase the well productivity. The wellbore was to be enlarged by chemical disaggregation of the sandstone adjacent to the wellbore. Productivity immediately declined 49.1 percent and gradually declined to zero in 7 months. A down-hole camera survey showed a white-to-gray precipitate covering the entire wellbore surface. The precipitate was chemically analyzed and identified as mostly carbazic acid, a hydrazine derivative of carbonic acid. Formation of this precipitate was not anticipated; this viscous sub-stance caused the gradual loss in productivity of the well. The wellbore was not enlarged. Laboratory tests were run to determine what clay stabilization measures could be taken in sandstone cores to prevent clay swelling and particle migration caused by hydrazine hydrate. Normal clay stabilization methods did not prevent the virtually complete loss in permeability to hydrazine hydrate. Other laboratory tests using natural gas diluted with small amounts of carbon dioxide confirmed the ease with which carbazic acid could be formed in a hydrazine hydrate-saturated environment within and adjacent to the wellbore.

The mineral matter has been isolated from a selection of Australian bituminous coals using low temperature (radio-frequency) oxidation or hydrogen peroxidation techniques and the species present identified by x-raydiffraction. Quartz, kaolinite, and a range of mixed layer clay minerals are the dominant constituents of the coals studied, with carbonate, sulphate, and phosphate minerals abundant in some samples. The clay bands thatoccur within these coal seams contain similar mineral assemblages to the coals themselves, but the lutites that form the inter-seam strata have a markedly different mineralogy, characterized by abundant quartz andillite and a low kaolinite content.The kaolinite is thought to have formed chiefly by interaction of silica and alumina in the waters of the coal swamp, aided by the catalytic action of organic acids, while most of the other clay minerals are probablydetrital. The absence of illite from Australian coals is not fully understood, but it may reflect the action of organic acids on the detritus in the swamp, coupled with deposition in freshwater rather thanmarine conditions. Pyrite, although present in some coal samples when fresh, may undergo oxidation during storage to form a number of sulphate minerals, some of which may interact with any calcite present toform gypsum.The mineral matter assemblage in the coal determines to a great extent the fusion characteristics of the ash.Unless abundant carbonates are present, coals with kaolinite-rich assemblages have a very refractory ash, while those rich in chlorite or montmorillonite have ash fusion temperatures between 1000 and 1300°C. Theinfluence of the minerals on coal preparation and coking properties is also brieflY discussed, as well as the potential of mineral matter studies in coal seam correlation.

Inadequate engineering design criteria for coal refuse embankments has allowed hazardous impoundment structures in coal mining areas to be created. A necessary first step to develop adequate design criteria is the determina¬tion of basic, respresentative physical property data on the materials that constitute typical refuse embankments. An extensive field and laboratory program was undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Much physical property data was generated. Additonal petrographic analysis and large scale triaxial compression testing was performed by others. The data presented here should aid in establishing design parameters for coal refuse embankments

The layered co-mingling method involves the disposal of waste rock with the addition, at predefined construction stages, of layers of dewatered mine tailings. The resulting waste structure displays bulk properties that are more favourable to acid rock drainage (ARD) control than the constituent materials alone. A laboratory test programme was conducted to examine the potential of this method. Columns containing different configurations of waste rock and tailings were percolation leached for 40 weeks and the leachates examined for various parameters. In the short term the chemical reactions that result from the introduction of dewatered tailings into rock waste can significantly improve the quality of the drainage. Columns with co-mingled material produced leachate with pH levels of 8, whereas leachate from the control column containing waste rock alone had a pH of 4. Larger-scale field tests are planned to determine the effect of the disposal method over the longer term

"The distinction between data suitable for process control and data subject to aliasing only becomes quantifiable with the availability of rapid real-time measurements. Expecting the dynamics of flotation to vary for different ore types, process flows and equipment types; a study was conducted to compare the dynamics of different flotation processes. The results shed light on the critical sampling intervals required for process control which in turn allows process stabilization and optimization. The technology used for the in-line measurements is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy and has been introduced into the mineral processing industry over the past ten years. It has been widely implemented in the sulphide flotation industry in South Africa for the real-time measurement of grade.BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE A study was conducted by Du Plessis and Keet (2010) to quantify the minimum sample frequency required for grade and/or impurity control. The study was based on chromite data collected at 15 second intervals from the concentrate line of a flash float cell in the Platinum industry. The data captured the natural process variation of the entrained chromite through water recovery due to changes in feed parameters and flotation performance. It was found that the minimum rate of sampling required from the studied flash float concentrate was 2 minutes. This sampling interval time accounted for 90% of the variance in the process data. It was further found that a sampling interval time of longer than 4 minutes produced data with no significant correlation to reality. The dynamics of the flotation process has been misjudged in the past but can be quantified with the availability of real-time grade measurement based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy. The objective of the study was to compare the dynamics of different sulphide flotation processes through the comparison of maximum sampling interval times required to combat aliasing. All data were collected from single stream analyzers that are currently installed at mineral concentrators. The technology used is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy."

Part I. The interaction between potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts has been studied thermo-chemically. It is shown that ethyl xanthate reacts with lead carbonate, basic carbonate, thiosulfate and sulfate according to principles of simple chemistry, whereas reactions with lead sulfite, metasulfite, basic thiosulfate and hydroxide at high pH are associated with secondary reactions. A new compound "xanthogen thiosulfate" is postulated. Part 11. Adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena has been studied quantitatively and thennochemi-cally. It is shown that an ion-exchange mechanism governs the adsorption process and that the heat of adsorption of xanthate on galena is equivalent to the heat of reaction of ethyl xanthate with bulk lead salts. It is concluded that the entropy content of the surface "compound" on galena is different from that of a corresponding bulk lead salt. Alkali depression is in part shown to be due to the instability of the xanthate-galena system at high pH and to the formation of basic lead salts. Sulfate and carbonate ions are shown to have a stabilizing effect on the xanthate-galena system. PARTI. THERMOCHEMISTRY OF ETHYL XANTHATE AND OF ITS REACTION WITH LEAD SALTS In the past little attention has been paid to the chemistry of lead xanthate. It is known that xan-thates form slightly soluble compounds with lead and that suspensions of lead xanthates in alkaline solution decompose rather readily.' The solubility of lead ethyl xanthate is of the order of 2.6 x 10-6 moles per 1. At increasing pH the xanthate concentration of a saturated solution contains more xanthate. Thus at pH 11 this xanthate content is about 100-fold larger than at pH 7.1 Xanthates are known to be consumed when added to a suspension of slightly soluble lead salts such as lead sulfate and lead carbonate. It is unknown to what extent this xanthate consumption is due to a simple chemical reaction because, frequently, observations are made which reveal secondary reaction products in such reactions. Thermochemical study of the reaction between xanthate and lead salts offers a means to clarify the significance of these reactions as the enthalpy changes can be accurately predicted from heat of formation of lead salts in pure solution reactions. In the present work the heats of formation of lead ethyl xanthate from potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts are determined and some thermochemical aspects of xanthate in solution are studied. The results of these investigations are presented in Part I. In Part II the heat of adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena surfaces is presented. All enthalpy changes were measured directly in a microcalorimeter. This paper reviews the recovery of potassium from different rocks and mineral sources. Global demand for potassium is rising steadily due to the growth of agricultural production. Fertilizer manufacture consumes the majority of the world’s potassium production, with other uses including those in the pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash (K2O) minerals, such as sylvite, kainite and carnalite, in countries like Canada, the United States, Israel and Russia makes them major potash producers, whereas agriculture-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India meet their potassium requirements through imports only. In these countries, the huge availability of potassium-bearing rocks/minerals like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica and glauconitic sandstone, containing around 4 to 17 percent K2O, brings up the prospect of commercial production of potassium. Potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast-leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. Although seawater is vastly available, the recovery of potassium from seawater using chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, membrane separation and ion-exchange methods is not cost-effective due to low concentration of potassium.

PRINCIPLES OF MINE PLANNING During the initial planning stages, all mining operations are analyzed and evaluated in a similar fashion. This similarity holds true because the mine-planning procedure can be reduced to a network of interrelated systems that are tied together by a common philosophy of mine planning: namely, that the resource is to be extracted in a manner which is safe, efficient, and profitable. The success of the mining operation cannot be guaranteed unless each of these three requirements is met. Fig. 1 shows a flowchart for the initial planning of any mining operation. Notice that there is a preplanning stage that leads to the planning of four interrelated systems. The preplanning stage includes property exploration, estimation of production and manpower requirements, and the establishment of construction timetables. The four systems, evaluated after the pre-planning stage, are broken down into the following: (1) Excavation and handling system, (2) Strata control system, (3) Operating support system, and (4) Service support system. The Excavation and handling system includes the selection of all the equipment for the removal of the resource from its in-place deposit (e.g., draglines, continuous miners, rock drills, etc.) and for the transportation of the mined material from the face (e.g., belt conveyors, trucks, etc.). The Strata control system incorporates all those considerations which maintain the integrity of the roof, ribs, floor, and overburden both during and after the extraction phase; typical considerations in this area include pillar sizing, artificial support of the immediate roof in mine entries, and subsidence protection. The Operating support system contains the "necessary evils" of mine planning; the system consumes a large percentage of the mining engineer's planning time but does not contribute to the actual extraction of the resource. However, if proper attention is not paid to the various components of the system, such as ventilation, drainage, and power, then the mining operation will not perform to its capabilities. Finally, the Service support system is composed of those operations which keep the mine running efficiently; typical examples of these include maintenance and sup- ply. One important concept that Fig. 1 is designed to emphasize is that the four systems are interrelated; typically, a slight alteration of one can affect the performance of another. If these interrelationships are ignored, the effects on the system can be disastrous. The mine preplanning stage and the four subsequent system evaluations constitute the Analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart. After this portion of the study is completed, the overall projected operation can be evaluated by techniques such as financial analysis. This last step in the study is referred to as the Synthesis of the previously calculated parameters into an overall plan. Much has been written about the overall evaluation of mining properties, but, over the past thirty years, very little has been written about the analysis of mine- planning systems in a coordinated manner. Further, those texts which attempted this topic have failed to give sufficient examples for successful implementation, thus supporting the operating engineers' lament that it is easy to discuss theories but difficult to show applications. This text is intended to bridge this gap. Examples of the various stages of the analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart shown in Fig. 1 will be covered in this text, with the exception of the Service support system, since this system is oriented more toward day-to-day planning than long-term mine planning. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDIZATION The benefits that can be derived from an international standardization of the units used in mining engineering calculations are numerous. The interchange- ability of equipment parts and the ability to analyze and compare performance and design specifications on an equal basis are just two of the goals desired by both manufacturers and mine operators. Unfortunately, conversion to an international standard has not been rapidly achieved by engineers in the United States, due to their training under the English system. The Society of Mining Engineers of AIME has made the commitment for the adoption of the Systeme International d'Unites (SI) in all mining engineering calculations. Since many practicing mining engineers and students in undergraduate programs still find difficulty in relating to SI units, the calculations in this textbook will use the English system, with Table 1 available for conversion into SI units.

A blast was engineered close to a tunnel in a deep-level mine with the purpose of studying the wave interaction with the tunnel. Numerical modelling of seismic wave propagation was used in both the forward planning and the back-analysis of this experiment. This paper presents the forward analysis. A likely model for a propagating blast was investigated and developed. This model predicts the influence of the velocity of detonation of the blast and the rise-time of the blast on the radiation pattern, and hence on the expected positions of maximum velocity at the tunnel surface. An attempt was made to quantify the parameters of the blast model, using waveform data from two other blast experiments. The blast model caused particle velocities which were an order of magnitude lower than these measured velocities. Large values for blast pressure were required to match the amplitudes of the recorded velocities. An alternative ?effective? source with a similar mechanism but increased diameter was proposed to account for the higher velocities. It was established that distant velocities scale with the square of the borehole diameter. A calibration blast at the experimental site was also modelled. Agreement in the waveforms was not sufficient for conclusive statements to be made about the validity of the source model. However, the modelled waveforms show an encouraging correspondence with some measured waveforms. This gave confidence that the model could be used to examine wave propagation around the tunnel, and allowed a scaled source to be developed for forward analysis of the main experiment.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.
