In the Frick District of U, So Steel Corporation, we have had more than 37 years of experience in the use of multiple-fan ventilation systems, in our coal mines. In our Colonial field, with a long belt installation, we have mined 85 million tons of coal with the use of the multiple fan system of ventilation. In our Palmer field, with the use of the same arrangement, we have mined 90 million tons of coal--a total of 175 million tons without one accident attributable to improper mine ventilation. The same system, fundamentally, has been installed in our expanding Robena operations and at its present stage of development we are using eight fans to ventilate this area. To date we have mined 55 million tons of coal with very encouraging results and again without any accidents attributable to ventilation.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

This paper describes Cananea's successful implementation of the world's first mobile high angle conveyor (MHAC™) to achieve multiple-lift stacking of their primary crushed (2,500 mtph) low-grade ore. The mobile high angle conveyor answered Cananea's needs to stack a second lift, 30-meter high, on their Quebalix I pad. The mobile high angle conveyor is a custom unit that was designed by Terra Nova Technologies (TNT) in conjunction with Continental Conveyor and Equipment Company (CCE's 100th HAC). The stacking system expansion project also includes a rail mounted tripper on the existing overland conveyor and a custom designed "corridor conveyor" to build the corridor for the upper mobile HAC tracks and tail of the existing mobile stacking conveyor. Mexicana de Cananea, part of Grupo Mexico, is a large copper producer in Sonora Mexico and has been in operation continuously for over 100 years.

China's coal energy development, characteristics and relationships with atmospheric pollution are reported. Atmospheric pollution sources from coal combustion are analyzed. Some of the projects for clean coal combustion in the Shanghai area include use of industrial briquettes, investigation of coal combustion additives, and blending combustion of coal with industrial wastes. Coal is China's main energy source, and 80 percent of China's annual coal production is used in combustion devices. Coal-flue gases from the domestic stoves and industrial furnaces are the main atmospheric pollution source. China's atmospheric pollution is, in fact, the pollution of coal-flue gases. To 2000, in view of China's energy needs as a developing nation, the atmospheric pollution from coal combustion must receive our utmost attention.

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. For achieving bulk economic excavation, large dump trucks are being used in majority of the earth moving operations resulting in high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) which exposes the operators to high levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). As the truck ages, hydro-pneumatic suspension struts loses their capability to effectively attenuate the vibration. A system is required to monitor and predict the performance of the suspension struts in real time. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied for modeling and predicting the suspension system performance for lighter/smaller vehicles. However, no work has been done to implement machine learning or AI for modelling and predicting the performance of hydro-pneumatic struts in large dump trucks. Therefore, current work is going to be a pioneering effort towards developing machine learning and AI models for solving this problem. Support vector machine (SVM) and regularized dual non-linear regression has been implemented in order to achieve the goal. 3D virtual simulator for CAT793D was used to conduct experiments in MSC.ADMAS environment. The two main recorded outputs were the RMS accelerations in the vertical and horizontal directions at the operator seat for characterizing the performance of the suspension system. During the development and the training of the models, eighty percent (80%) of the total experimental data was used and the remaining 20% was used during the testing and validation of the developed models. SVM model showed the desired accuracy in terms of hydro-pneumatic suspension system performance prediction for large dump trucks. These models can be implemented in the dump truck controller which can then be used to monitor the performance of the suspension system in real-time, and with that proper maintenance and/or replacement can be scheduled by the maintenance personnel. Workplace safety, operator’s health and the overall system efficiency can be greatly improved with an implementation of such an intelligent system. INTRODUCTION Large capacity dump trucks are being employed in any earth moving operation throughout the world for achieving bulk economic excavation [1, 2]. A large dynamic impact force is produced with large capacity shovels dumping material weighing 100 tons or more in to the dump truck under gravity. This dynamic impact force generates high frequency shockwaves which travels throug0068 the truck body, chassis and reaches the operator’s cabin and thus exposes the operator to severe levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). Recommended safe limits have been listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of ISO 2631 (1997, 2003, 2001 and 2004). An operator can got through a long term back, shoulders, arms and neck disability and disorders if exposed to the WBV levels beyond those limits. The dynamic impact force generated as a result of the high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) was modelled by Ali and Frimpong [2]. Furthermore, the complete methodology for optimizing the dumping process and reducing the impact force has been provided by Ali and Frimpong [1]. The vibration attenuation system present in the dump truck requires improvement in addition to the dumping process optimization. The vibration attenuation system in the dump truck commonly consists of hydro-pneumatic suspension struts. As the dump truck ages, its suspension system deteriorates and therefore loses its capability to effectively attenuate the shockwaves and the resulting vibrations produced by the dumping process. The deterioration tales place due to the contamination of the hydraulic oil or oil and nitrogen mixing or due to the gas accumulator diaphragm rupturing. The monitoring of the output vibration levels can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any suspension system. The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed the Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development (MERD) program to improve the reaction and response of mine personnel in mine emergency situations. The MERD program simulates problems that may be encountered in underground mine fires, underground mine explosions or surface mine accidents. Since its inception in 1982, the MERD program has been presented to MSHA, Industry, Labor and State Government Personnel. The program is extremely versatile and is easily adapted to suit various training requirements. It gives the participants the opportunity to experience some of the emotions, frustrations and successes of a mine emergency in a controlled environment without having to be involved in one. Past participants have indicated that this training has better prepared them in actual emergency situations through increased awareness and advanced preparation of plans and resources. In 1992, a Mine Simulation Laboratory, which simulates a coal mine and metal/nonmetal mine, was built to improve training for mine emergencies and prevention and fighting of mine fires. This facility has been included in the MERD Program to provide realistic and practical training for mine rescue teams and MERD participants in advanced mine emergency operations. This paper presents an overview of the MERD program.

In a proposed rulemaking regulating asbestos, nonasbestos varieties of Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite would be excluded from the regulations controlling permissible exposure to asbestos fibers. This proposed rulemaking is perceived as improving the scientific basis of the regulation of asbestos because it recognizes that there are no scientific data, either mineralogical or health related, which support the regulation of nonasbestos Tremoiite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite in the same manner as asbestos fibers. However, the proposed regulation, while representing a major advance in the treatment of AT A for regulatory purposes, does not provide an adequate analytical method for distinguishing between asbestos and nonasbestos particles, nor an adequate description of the regulated minerals. This paper addresses those topics, recommending that OSHA include an appropriate mineralogical definition, and implement a discriminate counting procedure to distinguish asbestos from nonasbestos particles.

As shown in former publications there are problems in load sharing of backstops in multiple drives of conveyors. Therefore, detailed calculation methods and design recommendations are required. In this paper various designs of load sharing methods are described and a dynamic torque calculation method will be presented. With this method the loadsharing properties for low and high speed backstops are calculated and compared. These properties depend on the spring characteristic of the drive train between backstop and load. Furthermore, the properties depend on the method of torquearm support and shock absorber configuration. Remarkable differences for external and internal backstops are shown

This paper discusses the design of long panels for longwall mining at Twentymile Coal Company (TCC) from conception to implementation. The case study of the long panels at Twentymile includes extensive mine plan reengineering in the early 1990's to world record production months in 1996 and 1997. The obstacles of subsidence engineering, environmental regulations, conveyance, ventilation, equipment design, and continuous miner (CM) development timing had to be overcome to successfully begin longwall production within a 4 year time frame. The background and some detail for each of these areas listed will be discussed to show how the coordination of many facets must be pulled together to implement a successful long panel mine plan.

Harima Works is operating as the zinc and lead simultaneous smelter utilizing the imperial Smelting Process. The smelter commenced its operation in 1966 with designed capacities of 3500 t/M of zinc and 1500 t/M of lead. After that, owing to the results of progressive developments and improvements in operating efficiency and equipments, it has doubled its production figure. This report reviews our recent developments carried out from 1983 to 1985. Firstly, the furnace bottom design was modified for the purpose of reducing carbon consumption ratio. As a result, shaft operating condition has been satisfactory and carbon consumption ratio was improved by 2%, in addition, furnace zinc production was increased by about 8%. Secondly, the oxygen enriched operation at sintering machine was tested from July 1984 to June 1985, in order to increase the sinter productivity, and to solve the capacity imbalance between sinter plant and ISF. As the test result, it was found out that sulfur elimination rate was increased by approx 10% with the oxygen enrichment of 500 Nm3/hr.

In this study, the Reddy-Blander model was applied to predict the sulfide capacity (CS) values of FeOx-CaO-SiO2, FeOx-MnOx-SiO2 and FeO-MgO-SiO2 ternary slags, which were experimentally studied in the literature within the temperatures between 1,673 and 1,923 K. As expected, sulfide capacity values of the slags increased with increasing temperature and decreased with increasing acidic content. The model was found to be in agree-ment for all slag systems at the temperature range of 1,773-1,923 K. However, a disagreement occurred when the basic content was relatively high, at 1,673 K for FeOx-CaO-SiO2 and FeO-MnOx-SiO2 slags. The effect on the CS of high amounts of Fe+3 and Mn+3 in the slags is discussed.

This study seeks to define the mechanism of oxyanion sorption onto surfactant-modified zeolites. Zeolites which have been treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) surfactant to produce a hydrophobic surface are capable of sorbing both organic compounds as well as oxyanions such as chromate, selenate, and sulfate. Simple ion exchange and charge-balancing mechanisms do not fully explain this unusual phenomenon. The sorption of HDTMA surfactant appears to be partly ion exchange and partly sorption to non-ion-exchangeable sites. Sorption of chromate is a simple exchange mechanism with bromide, which co-adsorbs with HDTMA to form a surface precipitate. Information from this study will be used to design on-site and in situ treatment systems for contaminated water, such as filter beds and permeable barriers.

The Blacklick Creek Watershed Association was awarded a $158,000 Growing Greener grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in 2002 for the design and construction of a sulfate reducing bioreactor (SRBR) cell to treat acidic discharge from the Judy 14 abandoned underground coal mine near Indiana, PA. The vertical flow SRBR was designed to treat 38 liters per minute of MIW containing elevated concentrations of aluminum and iron. Other treatment systems at this site plugged due to aluminum precipitates; this problem did not occur in the SRBR. The bioreactor has been periodically overloaded with flows up to six times the design rate. To date, the only maintenance performed on the unit has been the addition of hay to the surface of the unit in response to less than expected performance. The periodic hay additions appear to have restored the SRBR to nearly post-construction levels. Since construction, the SRBR has treated about 136,000 cubic meters (36 million US gallons) of MIW.

The history of mine safety legislation in this country is also a history of mine explosions. Nearly every piece of safety legislation that has been introduced or amended has resulted from some type of a disaster. When coal was first discovered and mined, it was extracted from along outcrops. As the coal became depleted near the surface, underground mining developed. When the first mine penetrated the outcrop, a great number of problems developed, many of which remain with us today. One of those problems is the potential for mine ignitions and explosions. Naturally, when underground mining progressed a few feet into the outcrop, some type of artificial light was needed. Early accounts of mining in Spain, Italy, Japan, and Great Britain indicate that torches served to light the mines. Later, candles were used, and still later, earthern oil lamps containing fish oil were used. As workings got deeper, explosions began to occur. When one did occur it was thought to be the work of goblins or the devil. As explosions became more frequent, it became very obvious that the use of open flames for lighting was very dangerous. A substitute was sought. Dried fish skins which gave off a weak phosphorescent light were tried. A mixture of flour and lime made from oyster shells called Canton phosphorous was also tried unsuccessfully. Fireflies in a bottle were also used.

In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

"INTRODUCTION Mining and processing of sulfide ore bodies has the potential to solubilize sulfate. Gypsum in the host rock, as well as oxidation of sulfides during milling and processing can solubilize sulfate. Acid rock drainage (ARD) also has the potential to generate waters high in sulfate. Even after treatment of the ARD with lime, the treated water can have sulfate present in gypsum saturation levels. Most mine-sites reuse sulfate impacted water but as a mine nears closure, reuse options may be limited and water treatment becomes an option. Furthermore, sulfate discharge requirements, particularly for anti-degredation narrative standards, can be very strict. Freeport has investigated many new technologies to economically remove sulfate from these types of water. A Dutch company, Paques B.V. developed one of these technologies and it utilized biological reactors to convert sulfate into elemental sulfur in a 2-step process. In 1992 the first industrial reference of the SULFATEQTM technology was commissioned at the Nystar Budel zinc refinery in the Netherlands. PILOT PLANT TECHNOLOGY AND DESCRIPTION As shown in Figure 1, the plant contains several process steps, which can mainly be divided into the following sections: 1. Anaerobic biological system in which sulfate is reduced to hydrogen sulfide by sulfate reducing bacteria. 2. Aerobic biological system in which hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to elemental sulfur by sulfide oxidizing bacteria. 3. Solid/liquid separation in which sulfur, calcium carbonate and biomass solids are separated and dewatered. Sulfate impacted ground water is pumped to the feed water tank through a plate and frame heat exchanger to maintain the solution temperature around 95°F. A custom mix of micronutrients is dosed to the feed tank. This nutrient mixture provides essential elements for the growth of anaerobic and aerobic biomass. Urea is added to the feed tank and provides the required nitrogen source to the biomasses. The pretreated feed water is pumped into the anaerobic reactor. The reactor works on the gas lift principle. Sulfate reducing bacteria utilize hydrogen gas as electron donors and reduce sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. This reaction increases the alkalinity of the solution. Carbon dioxide gas is added in order to control the pH within working range of the reactor. Due to the low solubility of the hydrogen gas, the anaerobic gas mixture is recycled through the system. The gas mixture recycle also provides the gas lift for mixing within the anaerobic reactor."

Under the terms of the 1970 amendments to the Clean Air Act, the EPA established national ambient air quality standards for a number of pollutants. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was one of these pollutants. These ambient air quality standards have had perhaps their biggest impact on the power utilities. In an effort to meet the air quality standards set forth by the EPA, utilities using high sulfur fuels have been forced to install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems. The majority of FGD systems in operation today are nonregenerable systems, that is the by-product of the system is disposed of, usually into settling ponds. Limestone slurry is the most common reagent used to remove SO from the flue gases. The calcium carbonate (limestone) slurry interacts with the flue gas, absorbing the SO2 and forming a by-product of calcium sulfate/sulfite which is disposed of.
