Surface coal mine design has traditionally relied on graphic and analytic approaches for pit layout and equipment selection. A number of interactive graphic microcomputer programs have been written which aid in the design process in the academic arena and should also have industrial applications. The programs described include a dragline cut diagram and production index calculation program, a downslope load scraper cut diagram and volume program and an overburden volume and coal tonnage sequencing program.

Background In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore, from a system's point of view, slurry transporta¬tion would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alterna¬tive examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasi¬biliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. l . The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then tempo¬rarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situ¬ations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe¬line, and personnel are needed. Georgius Agricola in 1556 wrote De Re Metallica, one of the first and probably the most famous of mining reference works. In Book 1 he reflects rather elegantly on mining and miners. "Many persons hold the opinion that the metal industries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requiring not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. For a miner must have the greatest skill in his work, that he may know first of all what mountain or hill, what valley or plain, can be prospected most profitably, or what he should leave alone; moreover, he must understand the veins, stringers, and seams in the rocks. Then he must be thoroughly familiar with the many and varied species of earths, juices, gems, stones, marbles, rocks, metals, and compounds. He must also have a complete knowledge of the method of making all underground works. Lastly, there are the various systems of assaying substances and of preparing them for smelting; and here again there are many altogether diverse methods. ... "Furthermore, there are many arts and sciences of which a miner should not be ignorant. First there is Philosophy, that he may discern the origin, cause, and nature of subterranean things; for then he will be able to dig out the veins easily and advantageously, and to obtain more abundant results from his mining. Secondly, there is Medicine, that he may be able to look after his diggers and other workmen, that they do not meet with those diseases to which they are more liable than work- men in other occupations, or if they do meet with them, that he himself may be able to heal them or may see that the doctors do so. Thirdly follows Astronomy, that he may know the divisions of the heavens and from them judge the direction of the veins. Fourthly, there is the science of Surveying that he may be able to estimate how deep a shaft should be sunk to reach the tunnel which is being driven to it, and to determine the limits and boundaries in these workings, especially in depth. Fifthly, his knowledge of Arithmetical Science should be such that he may calculate the cost to be incurred in the machinery and the working of the mine. Sixthly, his learning must comprise Architecture, that he himself may construct the various machines and timber work required underground, or that he may be able to explain the method of the construction to others. "Gravity concentration is still a challenging area in the mineral industry. This is mainly because of the fine size valuable mineral losses to the tailings during its application. But the recent developments in centrifugal separation methods and their mutual application with conventional separation techniques has increased mineral recoveries. In this paper, field application of conventional gravity separation methods with the combination of 2” diameter hydrocyclone cluster unit and a multi gravity separator (MGS) was discussed. Additionally, particle size distribution and chromite content of the plant streams is presented and initial laboratory test results were compared with the actual plant data throughout the paper. As expected, field data showed derivations from the laboratory tests but the combination of MGS and conventional gravity separation techniques resulted in gravity separation of -0.1 mm chromite particles. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this mineral processing plant project was to investigate the possibility of upgrading chromite ore from 12% to 48% Cr2O3 and having final tailings assay as 2% Cr2O3. For this reason, initially a set of laboratory gravity separation studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of combination of 2” diameter hydrocyclone cluster and multigravity separator. After obtaining successful results from the laboratory work, a feasibility study was initiated. Economical results of the feasibility study showed that an achievable high net present and return on investment values. Following the investment decision; engineering, equipment procurement, construction of the processing plant was completed in eighteen months. This paper focuses on the initial laboratory test work results, operational data of the 2” diameter hydrocyclones and MGS units; resulted chromite recoveries. Processed ore has the chromite associated with serpentine and olivine minerals. The chromite particles are generally in round shapes with sizes between 50 µm to 1600 µm and average size of 450 µm. The microscope images of the chromite and associated formations are presented on Figure 1.Chromite is formed in mixture with iron oxides, with varying amounts of magnesium, aluminum. The average chemical composition of the representative drill core samples of the ore deposit is given on Table 1."

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (?MINOSAL?) concentrator is located 20 kilometers southeast of Copiapo, Chile and processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4,200 tip (4,620 stpd). Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL in 1982. The principal incentive for this purchase was the exploration potential of the property. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). In 1982, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver, and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly $0.50 per pound. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansion projects, the concentrator is an interesting combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

Development of a realistic flotation model to predict its performance is of paramount importance to the processing plant and operators, a model that accounts for predictive and no-predictive maintenance simulating individual equipment downtime and the effect of it in the metallurgical performance on the flotation bank with final recoveries and grades has a huge advantage on optimizing the flotation circuit/bank in terms of mechanical and metallurgical side. The Model was developed in a dynamic environment that allows for a better and more realistic simulation of the flotation bank. The maintenance model accounts for the Failure rate, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) and Reliability (R(t)) those characteristics are combined to a multi-compartment process model that consists of a slurry recovery model, two options of froth recovery models, entrainment and carry capacity as a final check for the system. In addition to the maintenance and process model, a dynamic dart valve model was added to the simulation in order to have a realistic model to control the slurry level at the flotation cell. The paper goes over a study case for a current flotation operation trying to explore all the elements and the simulator to optimize the Rougher flotation bank.

The unprecedented demand for capital investment in the mining industry today has intensified management's interest in every known technique which will help to reduce operating costs and increase production. One proven approach leading to the accomplishment of this objective is well known in the mining industry and is gaining added prestige, particularly where keen competitive conditions exist. This approach is in the area of incentives applied to mining productivity. An investigation of many incentive plans now in use throughout the mining industry revealed a predominant number of conventional type plans, Most of these plans are designed to reward the hourly-paid employee on the basis of percent over and above a standard hourly or daily ton rate, By contrast, this search failed to divulge any incentive plan solely and independently developed for production management employees. This does not mean that such plans in the mining industry are nonexistnet, but it does indicate that production management incentive systems are scarce or are being kept under wraps.

A Setaram C-80 heat flux micro- calorimeter was used to study the surface and interfacial properties of fine coal particles in water containing flotation agents via heat of immersion measurements. Heat of immersion (?Himm) is usually a small exothermic quantity and can be used' to characterize a solid in terms of its relative hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity. The effects of coal type, surface oxidation, mineral matter content, kerosene concentration, and pH on the wetting characteristics were investigated. Results obtained from the calorimetry experiments correlated well with results from independent flotation experiments.

The geophysical aspect of reconnaissance marks the beginning of extensive computer applications supporting development of a mine. Although there are some storage and retrieval applications in geology, and some statistical analysis in geochemistry, large-scale compilation, reduction, and interpretation of mineral resource data are initiated in reconnaissance geophysics. The reasons for this fact are quite simple. Geophysics is oriented toward quantitative evaluation of areas of interest, and methods of data collection are automated to the extent that large amounts of analog and digital information are recorded. The large volume of data must be interpreted in a reasonable time. Furthermore, some modeling problems involving complex numerical solutions could not be attempted without the computer. Therefore, the computer is essential to the success of an exploration project using geophysics. For example, aeromagnetics is a common technique for reconnaissance examination of areas associated with sulfide systems and porphyry deposits. An area covering 161 X 161 km (100 X 100 miles) may be flown with a 1.6-km (1-mile) line spacing yielding 10,000 line miles (16,093 km) of data. If only 10 measurements are recorded per mile, 100,000 data points, including location and magnetic field intensity, must be reduced and stored for quantitative interpretation. Computer applications often represent a significant investment in manpower and hardware. It is desirable, therefore, to initiate an engineering approach to the application of computers to geophysics. By this it is meant that computer programs and systems should be formulated, developed, and implemented in a disciplined manner such that their usage is dependent only on the application and not on the individual doing the programming. In other words, computer application, development, and usage should evolve beyond the personal gadget phase to an important applied technology. Geophysics has evolved over the past two decades in a course parallel to computer hardware development. During the sixties, the computer became large enough and fast enough that complex models required by geophysics could be solved. Automation also relieved the geophysicist from routine manual calculations. During the seventies, computing power in¬creased and applications expanded from two-dimensional problems to three-dimensional modeling. Moving into the eighties, as computer hardware costs will significantly decrease, the major expense of computing will be the manpower required to develop, implement, and use an application; therefore, improved programming techniques and applications software engineering methods will be used to optimize and preserve this investment. This chapter presents a general overview of computer methods in geophysical reconnaissance; it is divided into two parts: geophysical methodology and software engineering.

"Mercury (Hg) is toxic and has long-term effect on the muscle tissues, the brain and the central nervous system functions due to its bioaccumulation and biotransformation effect. Hg pollution around the world is high and this has attracted much global concern such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury, held in 2013. For several years, mercury has been the chemical of choice for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) gold extraction, accounting for about one-third of the global mercury consumption. A greater percentage of this ends up in the environment through open burning of amalgam, spillage and indiscriminate disposal of waste. To break this wall of mercury pollution, it is very important for the mercury used to be recycled through the use of mercury retort units. This brings into the limelight, the Lantern Retort which tries to synergise the high conductivity of steel and the see-through effect of glass, thus, improving the amalgamation process. A research conducted on improving the original Lantern Retort arrived at an appropriate distillation length of 5.08 cm which was used in redesigning a more efficient retort. The improved Lantern Retort recovered about 98% of the mercury used. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and Small-scale mining (ASM) is an informal mining activities which employ quite simple tools such as pickaxes, sluice boxes, shovels, chisels, metal bars, mattocks and water pumps for mining and processing of gold ores. The artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has served as source of employment for many people in developing countries including Ghana (Aryee, 2001; Hilson and Potter, 2003; Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah et al., 2010) and has provided a substantial amount of foreign exchange through its activities (Hilson, 2001; Styles et al., 2010). Hentschel et al. in 2003 estimated that about thirteen (13) million people are said to be engaged directly in the small-scale mining activities worldwide. However, an estimated 100 million people are said to depend on this sector for their livelihood mainly in developing countries. In China alone, a projected number between 3 and 15 million people are engaged in artisanal and small-scale mining activities (Hentschel et al., 2003), whilst in Ghana, it is estimated that more than 1,000,000 people are employed directly or indirectly in the artisanal and small-scale mining activities, with 10% being women (Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014). In Ghana, ASM gold production has grown from a low of 2.2% in 1989 to a high of 34% in 2014. This figure is estimated to increase with proper documentation. This indicates that the sector has made significant socioeconomic impact on many individuals and communities as a whole. Notwithstanding the above positive contributions, the sector has also contributed to negative impacts on human, aquatic life and the environment in general due to indiscriminate mercury emission. This ‘pollution wall’ needs to be broken, and several interventions have been put in place including the use of retort units like the lantern retort (Adjei et al., 2014; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014)."

Geochemical laboratories are commonly criticized by geologists about poor analytical reproducibility and erratic anomaly patterns, especially when gold and trace metals from resistant minerals are reported. Geochemical analysis in mineral exploration is a compromise between high productivity on the one hand, imposed by large numbers of samples, and analytical precision and accuracy on the other. However, the physical properties of resistant minerals, such as cassiterite, gold, beryl, chromite, zircon and others, interfere with both of these requirements. Therefore, the degree of sample homogeneity that can reasonably be achieved in sampling and sample preparation must be considered. Subsequently, the understanding of its effects on analytical data quality and the consequences on data interpretation will provide a basis for understanding the problems common to exploration as an interdisciplinary science. Complaints about poor and inadequate analytical performance are not confined to exploration geochemistry. They are a common feature in mining and metallurgy and wherever sampling and analysis of "grains" are concerned - the "nugget" or "grain size effect." The "grain size" effect Poor analytical reproducibility is normal for gold and a well-defined group of other elements usually found in resistant placer minerals. Those who use and interpret geochemical data must realize and appreciate the chemical, the physicochemical, the physical and the mineralogical properties of the elements and their minerals. Especially for the "placer" minerals and their elements, such comprehensive interpretation is crucial. The most important factor to consider is the behavior of a mineral and its metal component(s) during weathering and their integration into the sampled medium, in exploration mostly sediments and soils. (Data interpretation for samples of water, gas, to a certain extent rock, follows different patterns.) A mineral may be chemically and physically stable or it may easily disintegrate physically or decompose chemically, or any combination of such processes, at varying degrees. The breakdown products, in turn, may or may not, interreact with the environment. If the nature of an element or a mineral predestines it for a heterogenous distribution in the sample medium, then nature, size and number of grains likely to occur should be considered in relation to the sample portion taken for analysis. This allows the estimation of their effect on analytical precision and accuracy. Elaborate and sophisticated statistical calculations exist on this subject. But these approaches do not cope with the complexity of the natural surface environment. The miner alogical, chemical and environmental behavior of elements and minerals can be estimated but not calculated. However, the mineral grain sizes and their influence on analytical precision can be precisely calculated if certain conditions, assumptions and idealizations are made. If the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of minerals and elements are understood, such calculations demonstrate the grain (or nugget) effects that mineral properties and (geo)chemical behavior of minerals and elements cause on the precision and accuracy of geochemical analysis through their influence on sample homogeneity. Two other factors that influence the sample homogeneity and the nugget effect are the efficiency of sample preparation and the sample portion taken for analysis. In this way, certain element- or mineral-specific parameters can be established as a guide for the sampling program. The information, for example, may assist in determining sampling procedures in the field, especially the sample weight to be taken for "representative samples." Also, it may help assess whether analytical data, as provided by the laboratory, are acceptable. Finally, it may help determine the approach in data interpretation. However, all such simplified calculations are based on idealized, that is, unreal assumptions and conditions. As such, they represent one extreme end on the scale of probabilities. The reality is found somewhere away from this extreme, towards homogeneity. An example from a study of an eluvial gold prospect may be given for illustration: •Original sample weight: 20 kg (44 lbs) of rock gravel, crushed and ground to -0.18 mm (-80 mesh). •Au content: 20 grains of Au, average size of about 0.5 mm3 (0.03 cu in.) each = 7.5 mg each, making a total of about 150 mg Au in the sample = 7.5 ppm Au. Assumptions •Au occurs in the sample as free, discrete grains only. •Not more than one grain, if any, goes into each sample split (analyte) portion (20 grains of 7.5 mg Au each). •Analysis of original rock sample: 100 g sample for analysis, 20 kg/100 g = 200 samples 20 samples with 1 grain each: result, - 75 ppm Au. 180 samples with no grain: result, 0 ppm Au chances 1:9 •10 g sample for analysis:

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). [Introductory Remarks] Thermoluminescence (TL) detectors are widely used for the dosimetry of X- and[ y]-rays. Also filter devices for radon daughter monitoring have been developed in which the a activity on the filter was measured with TL-detectors (Breslin et al., 1977). For this purpose normal LiF-tablets with a thickness of 0.4 - 1 mm were used. However the lower detection limit of such TLmonitors for radon daughters is relative high, especially in areas with a high [y]-background, due to the low [a /-y]-sensitivity ratio of such thick LiF-detectors. This [a/y]-sensitivity ratio can be increased if TL-detectors are used whose thickness is comparable with the range of [a]-particles. On the basis of this consideration we have developed a simple light weighted and sensitive TL-monitor for the measurement of the cumulative radon daughter exposure in air. [Description of the "Monitor] The monitor consists of two parts: The sampling pump with the accumulator, and the sampling probe which contains the air filter and TL-detector system. Both parts are connected with a plastic tube. For operation in mines a light weight, portable air sampler with a built-in accumulator (DuPont model 125 and 200, 400 g) is used which enables an adjustable, constant flow rate in the range of 7.5 -12 1/h. These air samplers allow a sampling period of 10 hours before recharging is necessary. For radon daughter measurements in houses this pump is replaced by a larger, netoperated pump with a flow rate of 180 1/h. Figure 1 shows a schematic cross section through the sampling probe whose weight is 40 g. The radon daughters are collected on a hydrophob membrane filter (Sartorius) with an effective filter diameter of 11 mm and a pore diameter of 3 µm; its collection efficiency for radon daughters is [>] 95%. Above the filter the detector system is mounted. It consists of two thin Tm-activated CaSO4-TL films of 8 mm diameter on a Al-carrier foil manufactured by Matsushita Inc., Japan. The thickness of the TL-film is 6 mg/cm2, which is comparable with the range of a rays. The first detector is faced in 3.5 mm distance above the filter; in addition to the ambient y background this detector is exposed to the [a] and ß radiation from the radon daughters on the filter. Between the first and the second TL-detector is an Al-absorber of 0.5 mm thickness which shields this detector against the [a] radiation and partly also to the ß radiation from the filter. Both detectors have the same [y] shielding. After air sampling both TL-detectors are read-out with a commercial, hot-air reader (Matsushita Inc. / Japan, Model 505 A). The glow-curves are identical for [a and y] rays (Regulla et al., 1980). The integral TLsignal from both detectors is displayed in mR-units (or mR-equivalent). The difference between the response of the unshielded TL-detector above the filter and the shielded TL-detector is proportional to the time-integral of the filter activity, integrated over the sampling period. Calibration and Intercomparison Measurements] The linearity of the a response was checked with a 241Am-source for an [a] fluence on the detector surface of 5400 [a's/cm2•s] in the range of 102 -105 mR-equivalent. Within the experimental error of 15% the response function is linear. The TLD-monitor was calibrated for radon daughters in air by comparison with a calibrated integrating, monitor (WLM-meter) equipped with a Si-surface barrier detector and a direct electronic read-out; this instrument was developed by us for area monitoring some years ago (Haider et al., 1976). The results of simultaneous measurements with the TL-monitor and the electronic WLM-meter in mine areas and in indoor air of houses are shown in figure 2. On the abscissa the mean potential [a] energy concentration (in WL) during the sampling period is given which was derived from the measurements with the electronic WLM-meter. On the ordinate the corresponding response of the TLDmonitor to radon daughters (difference between both TL-detectors) is displayed, expressed in terms of mRequivalent per liter sampled air. It follows from this comparison a linear relationship over the whole range of 0.005 - 5 WL with a standard deviation of 10%. The resulting calibration factor for the TLD-monitor is 18± 2 mRequiv per WL • 1.

In this paper, the formation conditions of hot water energy in Shan Dong are analyzed in order to achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emissions reduction by taking full advantage of water resources such as water pouring and return water of beatification during the productive process of underground metal mine. In order to analyze the issue better, the paper points out some ways and methods for geothermal water often used in underground metal mine. This paper also presents the advantages of the technology of water source heat pump that is applied into underground metal mine. Here is a case study of comprehensive utilization of water source in a certain underground metal mine in Ji Ning. This mine, according to its own actual situation, designs heat pump heat exchange system which is used for indoor heating of buildings and bath for staff. It turns out that the system can save 23% water per year, cut down 3.303 million KW electric energy, and reduce 4160t emission of carbon dioxide. It is concluded that the technology of water source heat pump has broad application prospects in underground metal mine. Therefore, the results show that it is an ideal way to change the present structure of cooling and heating source in metal mine.Introduction In recent years, overuse of fossil fuels has posed a grave threat onto the environment, which makes renewable energy a more important status in energy structure. Alternative material handling methods are allowing material handling operations to be performed with increased cost savings. This allows for higher production levels with better returns. RAHCO International Inc.'s Continuous Mining Excavator (CME) has recently received a lot of attention due in part to its operating efficiency, flexibility, and associated low operating costs. The CME is designed to perform three primary functions. These include material excavation, sizing and loading operations. In many applications, a drilling and blasting process can be eliminated. The CME was developed originally in 1985 for open pit coal mining. See figure I. Since this time, it has been proven an effective system for excavating many other types of materials including friable and sticky materials. It has also been shown to suitably handle hard rock in certain site conditions.

The Witwatersrand reefs provide excellent examples of chemical and structural control on gold distribution. All mined gold appears to coma from a carbon -gold association and/or Fe-S-Au association, and also from immediately above or below unconformity surfaces. A total raliance on the current syngenetic model for Witwatersrand gold does not appear to be justified from the accumulated data and may be responsible for missed opportunities during exploration: consideration of other models is suggested especially where they better fit the data. The stratabound natura of Witwatersrand gold 1& critical to mining, but is emphasized in syngenetic models to the virtual exclusion of many other important observations. By analogy with other deposit types, stratabound character is probably a poor guide to genesis.

The concept of sub-aerial tailings deposit.ion using a managed rotational deposition system to form a deposit of partly-saturated tails for North American conditions was introduced by Knight and described by Knight and Haile (1983). The application of the sub-aerial technique, together with continuous removal of all surface waters and underdrainage outflows from the Key Lake uranium mine I s tailing storage facility in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada, has been documented by Knight and Haile (1984). Since then, the concept is being applied in the United States to tailings facilities in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and South Dakota.

As the U.S. coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 80% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

Lateral density changes in the subsurface cause a change in the vertical pull of gravity at the surface. By very accurate measurement of gravity and the practical application of common sense, a microgravity survey can sometimes detect natural or man-made voids, bedrock profiles, and geologic structures of engineering interest. This paper will give some practical guidelines for the application of microgravity surveying. Emphasis in many papers (Blizkovsky, 1979, Fajklewicz, 1983) has been on the anomaly size: herein emphasis will be placed on detectability and signal-to-noise ratios. First, some easy to use curves for anomaly valuation are adapted from Arzi (1974). Secondly, the predictable noise sources are discussed. Thirdly, representative models of abandoned underground workings are evaluated for microgravity surveying given the probable noise in the survey results.

The Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCTC) Project is a 1.9-mile-long metro light-rail extension project that traverses the historical core of downtown Los Angeles, California. This project aims to improve mobility throughout downtown LA with fewer transfers for riders. It is designed to connect two existing rail lines for a more seamless travel. The project consists of twin bore tunnels, three new stations, and is scheduled to be completed in 2022. The design-build contract was awarded to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC) in 2014, a joint venture of Skanska and Traylor Bros, Inc. with Hatch Mott MacDonald as the designer. One of the challenging aspects of the project was the construction of a crossover cavern in a narrow public right-of-way surrounded by historical structures. RCC used Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) to construct the crossover cavern measuring 287 ft long by 58 ft wide by 36 ft tall. The initial lining of the cavern featured a 12 in. fiber reinforced shotcrete lining. The initial lining was separated from the final lining by a hydrocarbon resistant membrane, as specified by the standard requirements of Metro. The cavern features a cast-in-place final lining with a thickness of 5 ft 9 inches in the invert and 18 inches in the crown and walls. The structure also features a nonload bearing plenum slab and interior walls for ventilation.
