Particular emphasis is placed on the problems encountered with commissioning and the strategies which were employed to solve them.

During 2001-2002, the Granny Smith Mine of Western Australia undertook the development of a planned circular failure. Excavation took place in an interim pit wall that intersected the transported sediments, lake clays, and palaeo channel sands that overlay the deposit. The purpose of the study was to refine feasibility level slope parameters used for the initial design of the Wallaby pit, with the intent of increasing the overall slope when excavating the ultimate pit limits. During excavation, the geological and hydrogeological characteristics were studied in detail and data was collected using area-specific instrumentation and monitoring. Failure occurred in mid February 2002, at which time a detailed survey of the excavated slope using laser technology was conducted to provide geometric information suitable for back analysis of the material shear strength. The slope failure and associated information was analysed by geotechnical consultants. The revised shear strength and hydrogeological parameters were then applied to design the final pit walls. The slope redesign provided a cost saving of approximately seven hundred thousand US dollars. Design, slope formation, back analysis, the geology of the clay units, the hydrological environment, planned infrastructure, management and safety issues, and the on-going slope performance of the final slope are discussed.

Western mining companies are entering an African critical minerals market where access is harder to secure, risk is being priced more sharply, and execution advantages are increasingly decisive. The continent holds significant reserves and production potential of cobalt, lithium, copper, graphite, manganese and rare earths critical to the energy transition, yet Chinese-aligned capital has built a structural edge in access and execution speed. Simply signing narrow offtake agreements to buy output is no longer sufficient. Western firms win when they convert quality orebodies into bankable projects by reducing aboveground risk faster than competitors through integrated infrastructure access, durable fiscal alignment, and credible local value creation. Western mining companies will break into Africa by pairing capital with partnership, building corridors enabling infrastructure and power, designing credible value addition pathways and operating in a way that is politically durable through transparency, community benefit and fiscal terms that share upside in commodity upcycles. This feature article offers a practical playbook for mining executives and investors. The core argument is straightforward. Winning in Africa requires competing on the full system around the mine. Corridors and power, processing pathways, contract durability, community benefit and regulatory execution are now decisive variables in project valuation and capital access.

This study simulates the impact of a shale gas well casing breach near a longwall mine. Field studies are conducted to measure mining-induced permeability changes over the abutment pillar of a longwall mine, and a geomechanical model is developed in 3DEC, a three-dimensional numerical modeling code, to predict the aperture of fractures in the overburden at the study site. The predicted aperture values are used to determine mining-induced permeabilities, and the results are compared with the field measurements. These aperture values are provided as inputs into fracture flow code (FFC), which generates a stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model for the study site and predicts the potential shale gas flow to the mine. Results from 100 DFN realizations are statistically analyzed using the bootstrapping method to compensate for notable variation in fracture geometry. The results show a significant difference between the gas inflow for nearby panels due to increase in the induced permeability during mining of the second panel. The average gas flow to the mine was calculated as 4.72 × 10 m3/s (49 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the first panel mining, 8.97 × 10 m3/s (19 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the first panel mining, 2.16 × 10 m3/s (458 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the second panel mining, and 8.07 × 10 m3/s (171 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the second panel mining. Depending on the mine ventilation system, this could result in methane concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Hence, these findings provide insights into the potential risk of an unconventional gas well casing breach near a longwall mine under shallow cover.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonite to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath. 1986 and personal communication). These bentonite; typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X- ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. A subsequent spin off of the energy shortage is the new life for barite. Over 90% of the barite produced in the world is used as a weighting material in oil well drilling muds. Business is booming; the price of barite has risen; scarcity is imminent, and exploration is going full steam ahead. New barite-producing companies are being formed and many of the barite consumers are considering becoming producers. Prospectors have found a new "love," smaller deposits are being explored, and old deposits, previously rejected, are getting a reappraisal. Even barite tailing piles are being resampled.

Raise boring of mine ventilation shafts in many cases offers a lower cost and higher speed method of construction in comparison to conventional shaft sinking. Where underground access is available for raise boring the potential savings indicate that raise boring should be considered as an alternative to other methods. Raise boring machines are currently in use which have the capability for reaming shafts up to twenty feet in diameter, depending on the strata and depth. These large capacity machines make it possible to consider raise bored shafts for moving large volumes of air. Although we will consider here only ventilation shafts, raise boring should also be considered for men and material shafts. When the mine planner has determined the volume of air required through a shaft at a particular location he is faced with the problem of selecting the shaft size. The principal factors in optimizing the shaft size are the construction costs for the shaft 'and the power cost to move the air through the shaft. The larger diameter the' shaft is the more it costs to construct, but for a given volume of air the power required (cost) becomes lower as the diameter increases. The construction cost is paid only once, when the shaft is constructed. The power costs, however, are paid throughout the life of the shaft. Methods of optimizing air shaft size found in the literature (References 1 and 2) amortize the construction cost and include it in the average annual cost of operating the airshaft. These methods derive a formula for the average annual cost vs. shaft size and de-rive the formula to compute the optimum size for a given air flow rate. Sulfuric acid mist is an undesired by-product of the copper electrowinning process, caused by oxygen evolution at the anode which entrains droplets of the acidic copper electrolyte solution. As the oxygen moves to the surface of the cell, these droplets become aerosolized resulting in acid mist. The addition of chemical anti-misting agents to the copper electrolyte is a common mitigation technique. This paper details Syensqo’s laboratory development of a new environmentally friendly acid mist suppressant, ACORGA® EW98. The product exhibits excellent acid mist suppression and it is fully compatible with the adjacent solvent extraction process. Lab and pilot test results are reviewed ahead of future planned industrial trial testing.

A complex pyrite orebody located in the South of Portugal (MO INHO) was exploited in the past by cut and fill methods until a certain level. It was decided to design a new plant for non ferrous metal extraction and the rate of production and exploitation method was modified accordingly. So, a sub level stoping (SLS) method was en visaged for the exploitation of the deepest part of the orebody (under 265 m level). For the planning of this SLS method, it was decided to perform a geostatistical study of the orebody, on the basis of the available information, which consists mainly of channel samples assayed for Cu, S, Zn and Pb.

"In oil fields that have been depleted with conventional surface oil wells but still contain significant reserves, an extraction alternative that has been constructed recently consists of a drilling gallery below the oil-bearing formation at the bottom of a 1,200-ft deep shaft where upward sloping wells are being drilled to allow oil collection by gravity. The gallery is 92-ft diameter with a flat ceiling supported by rock bolts and shotcrete structurally connected to the shaft liner, which doubles as a large tension support element. A special excavation sequence was implemented for the gallery to maximize arching in the stress above the large diameter gallery. The gallery was located in competent sandstone, constructed with sequential excavation methods, and designed with a 3D finite element model. Special consideration was given to optimizing the gallery location to take advantage of the geology for construction and support while giving good positioning to the well drilling equipment. BACKGROUND Brierley Associates was contracted to provide both design and construction management services for an approximately 1,165-ft deep, 18-ft excavated diameter vertical shaft that opens to a 92-ft diameter flat roof gallery. The geotechnical data for the site was based on information available from literature and from data obtained during core drilling and from in-situ testing in a 1250-ft deep borehole. Wire line coring was conducted using a HQ, 10-ft long core barrel with a mud-rotary drilling method through sedimentary bedrock. The geometry of the shaft and the bottom gallery is shown in Figure 1(a). GEOLOGIC SETTING AND STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY The stratigraphy at the site includes a series of interbedded marine limestone, shale, claystone, siltstone, sandstone, and chert units. Limestone and shale are the predominant lithologies in the upper approximately 675 ft, while the lower portion contains five distinct sandstone units and more abundant shale, claystone, siltstone, and coal than the upper zone. A cherty sandstone at a depth of 1,130 below ground surface (bgs) was encountered. At a depth of about 1,000 ft to 1,116 ft bgs, a non-marine sandstone unit was encountered. This sandstone is the hydrocarbon bearing layer. Joints and fractures observed in the limestone had dips ranging from 0 to 90 deg. from horizontal with joint and fracture surfaces that ranged from planar to irregular and smooth to rough. Several, near vertical shear planes with slickensides were observed with surfaces that were generally smooth and planar. RQD values for the limestone ranged from 0 to 100 percent but in general were good to excellent."

The remarks that follow are based substan¬tially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which have been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more-difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1 ½ . The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present.

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. Coteau, a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corporation, produces more than 13.5 million tonnes per year, ranking it among the largest mines in North America. In 1993, Coteau ranked seventh in terms of annual coal sales, becoming the largest mine outside the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. However, for the Freedom Mine to stand among these Powder River heavyweights, Coteau over-came several obstacles, including a coal seam with three quarters the heating value and overburden to coal ratios three times higher than the Powder River mines. Coteau's ability to compete has been built around a program of continuous productivity improvement, cost efficiency, and innovation. This report highlights a few of the major improvements implemented in recent years.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. The principle oxide minerals of molybdenum are wulfenite (PbMoO4), ferrimolybdite (Fe2(MOO 4)3.nH2O), powellite (CaMoO4), and ilsemannite (Mo304). Wulfenite is found in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, California, and Montana. It is also found in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico. Prior to 1915 wulfenite ores were the primary source of molybdenum. The solubility of wulfenite in hot sodium sulfide was first noted by Bonardi(1) during attempts to sulfidize wulfenite material prior to flotation. He identified lead sulfide and soluble sodium molybdate as reaction products. Bacon (2) sulfidized wulfenite in preparation for flotation and by X-ray analysis found the reaction product to be lead sulfide. Holmes(3) made an extensive investigation of the extraction of molybdenum from wulfenite concentrates by leaching. Nearly 100% molybdenum extraction was possible from -100 mesh samples leached for 15 min with 10% sodium sulfide solution at room temperature. Molybdenum extraction from -100 mesh samples after leaching 30 min at a temperature of 45°C using 2, 4, and 6% sodium sulfide was about 32, 79, and 98% respectively. The extraction showed little sensitivity to time, temperature, or particle size using 10" sodium sulfide solution.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

Roadheaders, also called Boom Miners or Boom-type Tunneling Machines have been in North America since 1968, when first introduced by Willy Kogelmann, the founder of Alpine Equipment Corp. (?Alpine?). Roadheaders were invented in Europe in the late 1940s. Machines with in-line, axial cutter heads were developed in the former Soviet Union. The British Dosco DRCL is based on the Russian PK-3 roadheader. Roadheaders with transverse ?ripper? cutter heads were invented in Hungary (1). The Austrian-made Alpine Miners of VOEST-Alpine, purchased by Sandvik AB, are based on a 1965 Hungarian license. Roadheaders are widely used in the mining and tunneling industries because they can excavate drifts, entries and tunnels with cross sections of any shape and size, can handle mixed faces, work on steep grades, and negotiate tight curves and cross-cuts. A roadheader?s only major limitation is the strength and abrasiveness of rock and minerals to be excavated. This paper covers roadheader selection criteria, improvements in reliability, attachments for flexibility (Multi-Tool Miner), and automated support systems for increased cutting time for increased shift production.

The spherical agglomeration process provides an attractive method for the cleaning and recovery of fine coals in the form of compact oil-bonded pellets. In treating a washery effluent containing 50% minus 20 micron material by this technique, the slurry was first mixed under vigorous agitation with oil to deash and dewater the fine coal. The flocculated coal pulp was then formed into larger agglomerates on a modified balling disc. The operation of a semi-pilot scale process is described and an analysis of some of the operating and system variables is given. A semi-theoretical expression to predict the final agglomerate size under various conditions is derived and compared with the experimental data. Coal producers are faced with a growing requirement to clean and recover fine mesh coals. Greater mechanization of the extractive and preparation processes has resulted in finer-sized products containing larger quantities of associated foreign matter and preparation plant effluents contain quantities of fine coals which are potentially valuable. These losses will probably increase with the expansion of production and will require the development of effective disposal and utilization processes under pressure of the lack of adequate disposal areas, the enforcement of air and stream pollution laws, and the economic need to obtain the maximum yield of salable product(1)
