The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

Computer controlled drilling is now proven technology. It was first introduced by the development of the Furuholmen system for a prototype three boom tunneling jumbo in Norway in 1978. Now, 13 rigs with this concept are in operation in Europe, 3. in mining in England and. 10 in tunneling elsewhere in Europe. The system is also adapted to roadheader guidance. Practical experience has shown that the computer control system makes it possible to drive tunnels with a more accurate contour thus reducing the total amount of rock excavated, and where a full concrete lining is required a reduction in concrete volume is achieved. The total tunneling economy is improved. In the future we expect to see a wider range of instrumentation on jumbos, from the simple direction instruments to computer guidance systems for monitoring only, as well as fully automatic drilling to a programmed drilling pattern. More compact and reliable electronics will be available. Systems with low power consumption will fit easily into flameproof applications. Cabling complexity will be reduced by connection of sensors to serial signal lines.

INTRODUCTION The design criteria for a particular concentration and dewatering project will provide the formal basis for design of the process, equipment and facilities. These criteria will specify the required capacities and operating schedules for the equipment, as well as the quantity and quality of the feed to be processed and products obtained. The general climatic and geographical conditions at the site, specific information on soil or rock conditions; and applicable design standards and codes will also be included. The design criteria will generally be based on an interpretation of testwork carried out on the particular ore and site, and will thus parallel in detail and completeness this testwork. As the project moves from the early conceptual phases through to final detailed design, the design criteria will be developed and become more detailed as information is generated and made available for use. The design criteria are critical to the design effort as the formal specification to the designer of what and how much is to be processed, what and how much is to be produced, and where and under what conditions. The actual design criteria will be a formal tabulation of the design basis information developed for the project in question. For a preliminary study, this may consist of a single page of data; for a feasibility study several pages and for a detailed design up to several hundred pages and multiple volumes. Depending on the complexity of the process and the level of detail included, each project will be unique to some degree. The design process for a project normally progresses from preliminary conceptual phases through to a final detailed design. The criteria used for the initial concepts are generally developed from rough data and preliminary testwork on the ore in question. Regardless, the plant throughput and products are defined, thus giving a scope and definition to the study phase. In some studies a range of throughputs may be analyzed in order to arrive at the most economically attractive size for the proposed operation. This optimum size is then used as the design throughput for the more detailed design phases. Similarly as more testwork results are available and the ore characteristics and process become more well defined a continuous updating of the design criteria is undertaken.

On the territory of Macedonia in South Yugoslavia primary and dory gold occurences were known since ancient times. Remnants of numerous goafs and remainders of washaries on river terraces and alluviums date right back to the times of Phillip II and his son Alexander of Macedonia and from Roman times, as well as from the Middle Ages witness exploitation of primary and secondary gold. More recent explorations on primary and secondary gold occurrences date from the period between two World Wars. Over that period a number of private companies, each on their own jointly, carried out gold exploration, particularly of alluvial occurrences on rivers emptying into River Vardar, starting from Skopje to the Greek frontier. The latest gold explorations carried out In the alluvium of River Konjska date back in 1976, and in 1978 old terraces of River Konjska were explored. The Visibility Study was prepared on possibilities of exploitation of gold from River Konjska alluvium. In the paper are collected the basic date an all known primary and secondary occurrences of gold, the results of the latest explorations, and the study itself. To-date geological explorations and analyses show very interesting potentionality of River Konjska and River Vardar alluvium, which proves continuing of he further explorations. For the moment, it is necessary to re-explore more complete view of the deposit. After that it will be possible to make complete techno-economical estimation of the auriferious alluviums and the conditions of the evaluations of the alluvial gold. 1. Surface mining, from ore extraction to processing, requires many types of equipment to obtain the final product. Mine equipment often includes shovels, drills and haul trucks. Ore processing equipment, including plants, mills and concentrators, are also part of surface mining operations. Surface mining operations emphasize production. Production is where the bills are paid and fortunes are made. However, there must be support to keep the equipment operational. To most production people, equipment maintenance is a necessary evil. Maintenance is not glamorous work. It is often neglected when praise is being passed around. It is easy to recognize higher production, greater capacities, faster cycle times or more loads hauled. But who cares if an engine is replaced in 12 hours instead of 48? The answer is, everyone should - from the hourly miner to the mine manager. Surface mining equipment needs constant maintenance work. It must be lubricated, components replaced, electrical problems repaired and other problems addressed. Repair work for any surface equipment takes time away from production. It costs money. Maintenance costs cannot be avoided. However, they can be minimized. Minewide communication should include operations cooperating with maintenance. Traditionally, operations resist surrendering equipment to maintenance if it can continue to produce. The rationale is, every load that can be hauled today is money in the bank. If the unit is taken down, the money is lost. This thinking is prevalent in many surface mining areas, including the mill. "Not on my shift," the operator thinks. "Let the next crew worry about it. The problem with this thinking is in probability and statistics. The longer equipment goes without maintenance work, the higher the probability of equipment failure. When the failure does occur, it is certain to cause the equipment to remain down longer than if the maintenance department had been allowed to take it down. Many mining operations have closed early in their lives because of poor maintenance practices. This has become the industry standard because substandard levels of performance are acceptable. Management believes it gets five to six hours of work from maintenance people during an eight-hour shift. Actually, the industry average is less than two hours of work per shift. Real productivity levels of less than one hour are not unusual. There are few exceptions. However, a daily work schedule (DWS) will increase productivity at many properties by 50% to 100%. A 200% improvement is not unusual. The DWS will work. Maintenance people are among the most intelligent and motivated people on the property. They deserve the chance to be productive. [ ] In preparing a DWS, management needs to understand two productivity principles - the productivity spread and the real maintenance workday.

In spite of our deep conviction that it would be wrong for the United States to enter World War II, when, after Pearl Harbor, we were actually in it, I felt that I must do all I could to help. The country had been so good to me that I could not decently stay on the sidelines. My first thought was that I might help with supply and administration in the Air Force, as in World War I. So on the evening of Pearl Harbor I wired the chief of our Air Force in Washington saying that I had been on Gen. William Mitchell's staff in World War I and was offering my services again. I received a noncommital answer, but after a couple of weeks was told to take my physical examination. I passed it, but nothing further happened. After helping to make plans for the wartime operations of Summit King and Desert Silver, Dorothy and I went to New York to spend Christmas with Molly and Peter, both of whom were in college in the East. I had to complete a report on the Argonaut mine in California first, though the war made my recommendations of dubious validity. Before Christmas I received wires from Temple Bridgeman, Phil Wilson, and other friends who had taken positions with government agencies responsible for securing mineral products needed for war use. They urged me to join them. It was evidently a case of not whether but how I could be most useful. After six uncertain days with the family in New York I took the night train to Washington on the 28th of December. I had a hectic day there. First I saw Arthur Bunker and Phil Wilson at what became the Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the War Production Board. Their office was in an old converted barracks. They asked me to examine magnesium deposits in Nevada at once, and then to look at other magnesium and aluminum properties. After leaving

Contrary to active subsidence, which occurs concurrently with mining operations, or is completed within a few days following coal extraction, delayed subsidence may take many years to appear at the surface after coal mines are abandoned. There are two principal morphological types of delayed subsidence: troughs, which are shallow depressions, and sinks, which are steep-sided crown pits. Both types are damaging to surface structures, and a variety of methods have been introduced to deal with the problem, ranging from subsidence insurance to site restitution. In planning insurance or restitution measures, a predictive model is of value in estimating the magnitude of the problem and the size of long-term budgetary commitments. Only one model is known, which was developed for the Bureau of Mines by GAI Consultants of Monroeville (l,2,3). The GAI model is presented in qualitative terms. This report develops a formal basis for the model and tests a numerical implementation on one of the best-described study areas, Allleqheny County in Pennsylvania.

Research was conducted at a western coal mine on a wide variety of underground mining vehicles to develop testing procedures for portable instrumentation monitoring of tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon dioxide (CO2) carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO). DPM was measured using the Emissions Measurement Appa¬ratus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU), and an ECOM-KL five-gas analyzer was used to measure gaseous tailpipe concentrations. Baseline concentrations of the tailpipe pollutants were measured using vehicle systems to load the engine. Concentrations before and after the water scrubber were measured and water scrubber efficiencies were estimated by calculation. Field measurement procedures were established. Heavy-duty vehicles with automatic transmissions were loaded using the torque converter to stall the engine. Consistent engine loading for light-duty vehicles with manual transmissions involved placing the transmission in neutral and adjusting the throttle to maintain a constant engine speed of 2,500 rpm. Tailpipe CO2 concentrations for Caterpillar 3306 and 3304 engines were compared to laboratory CO2 data from Caterpillar and MSHA to help determine if engine settings were correctly adjusted for operation at high altitudes. (Perfect agreement between the mine vehicle tailpipe and laboratory measurements would not be expected because of the differences in the test conditions.) DPM concentrations for light-duty vehicles ranged from about 20 to 160 mg/m3, and one light-duty vehicle averaged near 1,000 mg/m3. DPM concentrations for heavy-duty vehicles ranged from about 55 to 200 mg/m3. Widely ranging DPM concentrations for a particular vehicle type reflect the state of maintenance, fuel rate settings and different engine loading procedures as well as differences between samples collected upstream and downstream of the waterscrubber. The calculated DPM removal efficiencies due to the water scrubber varied considerably between vehicles, ranging from 13% to 51%. Calculations indicate that, under worst-case conditions, very large reductions in DPM may be required to meet the proposed DPM PEL of 0.15 mg/m3, even on vehicles with water scrubbers. In-mine ambient air studies, which are needed to actually measure the impact of the tailpipe concentrations on the work environment and the effect of mine ventilation on the dilution of DPM were not done in this first set of tests.

The Chuquicamata mining and metallurgical complex is the main division of CODELCO-CHILE. Its comparative advantage in the world of primary copper producers had deteriorated severely and, consequently, its top management launched an extensive modernization plan. This paper shows how Chuquicamata recovered its position as a low-cost copper producer and is now well positioned to face the end of this century, as far as competitiveness is concerned. It also shows the company's vision for the )(XI century. Given the volume of its ore reserves, one possibility is expanding the sulfide production line capacity, while in the case of the oxide production line, ore reserves are limited so that there is a need to maximize the effectiveness of both organization and technology use. A final consideration has to do with the balance of supply and demand. Most observers of the copper market agree that supply is growing faster than demand. On the other hand, copper is facing severe environmental problems, especially in the piping business, plus the usual threat of substitution. Nevertheless, copper producers are making very weak efforts to defend the market and increase copper consumption through the promotion of new uses of the metal. This issue is crucial and must be considered if copper producers want to maintain a profitable market.

California was a major talc-producing State until the late 1980s when production from the deposits in the Death Valley area ceased because of a number of factors which included pressure to discontinue mining in and around Death Valley National Monument, and health concerns affecting markets for tremolitic talc. The states of Montana and Texas now account for slightly more than half of U.S. talc production. Deposits in an area encompassing southern Death Valley and extending east into the Kingston Range were formed by contact metamorphism of carbonate beds in the Precambrian Crystal Spring Formation next to Precambrian diabase sills. These deposits contain ore ranging from high-purity, fine-grained talc to platy, tremolitic talc with high brightness. Deposits of tremolitic talc and talc schist in the Silver Lake District in San Bernardino County resulted from metamorphism of Precambrian carbonate beds intruded by granitic plutons. Northeast in Esmeralda County, Nevada hydrothermal alteration related to Late Jurassic plutons caused talc replacement of Precambrian to Early Cambrian dolomite. A hydrothermal origin is also indicated for talc deposits in the lnyo Range just north of the Death Valley District where bodies of unusually pure talc occur in Paleozoic lime- stone near Jurassic granitic plutons. Talc is now mined from a deposit in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range southeast of Sacramento where quartz-mica schist of the Permian Calaveras Formation has been hydrothermally altered to talc. Replacement of magnesite of the Precambrian Allamoore Formation produced talc deposits mined in the Allamoore District of west Texas. This dark-gray talc of low iron content with carbon- aceous material and dolomite is ideally suited for use in ceramics where it makes a white product when fired. Small bodies of platy light-pink to white talc suitable for use as an extender in paint are also mined in this district. In the Llano District of central Texas talc has replaced impure carbonate rocks and serpentinite. All Montana talc production is from deposits in the southwestern part of the State that formed by Precambrian hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marble. This alteration produced material with high purity that ranges from very fine-grained, massive talc to coarser grained, foliated talc. Markets include pitch control in paper, paint, cosmetics, ceramics, rubber and plastics. In southwestern and northeastern Oregon, talc has replaced serpentinite in the vicinity of Mesozoic plutons. Soapstone for carving is mined from a southwestern Oregon deposit. Deposits of similar origin occur in central and northwestern Washington.

The percentage of exploration dollars flowing out of the industrialized countries continues at an all-time high, and this shift in risk money is justified (Samuels, 1990; Bosson, 1977). Clearly, the odds of discovery are greatly enhanced if exploration is pursued in an untrampled and geologically more prospective environment. Unfortunately, such major unexplored areas of the developed world are shrinking rapidly, not just because the lands have already been tested, but primarily because they have been withdrawn from exploration. Experience, however, has shown that foreign investment is not without risks. These include problems that result from working in isolated areas, a lack of infrastructure, untrained workers and an absence of a solid geological data base. While the likelihood of once-feared expropriation is now low, mining enterprises still must take precautions to gain the support of their constituencies, including a variety of governments (local, provincial and central), workers, environmentalists, cultural organizations and local landowners. Is foreign exploration worth the risk? In most cases, Yes! But maintaining tenure and long-term success in a less developed country is only likely with good planning and the use of appropriate safeguards. These include measures such as buying country-risk insurance, building multinational relationships, forming joint investments, developing a broad customer base and seeking local investors in the company (Cobbe, 1979). The primary theme of this lecture is: How a company handles its constituency is critical to long-term tenure in a foreign country. Ideally, a multinational mining company would be so effective in dealing with the local people and managing its relationship with the host government that it would become a preferred employer, preferred over its competitors and over local companies. Historical overview Our earliest ancestors lived in Africa three to four million years ago. The Paleolithic or Old Stone Age, about 500,000 years ago, marked the beginning of mining in its earliest form (Gregory, 1980; Wolf, 1984). Various types of rocks and stones were used for tools and weapons, with flint being the preferred resource for implements. Initially, these materials were collected as stones (eoliths) lying on the surface. Then they came from excavations of flint in limestone beds that were exposed in river banks or naturally occurring excavations. Later, more formal mining developed. No doubt tribes of the Old Stone Age experienced conflict over rights to eoliths, food and land. The question of who owns the land and has rights to its contents and what is fair value for extraction is still the subject of intense debate and, occasionally, open conflict. As time passed, the search for useful minerals required migration from one area to another. Later, voyages from Europe to the New World and travels to other remote regions were funded and supported by absentee investors, kings and such (Rogers, 1976). The primary objective of such funding was to obtain gold, silver, food stuffs and other commodities that could be collected from the new countries. This is still the objective of foreign investment.

During the dry screening, the hole plugging is a serious problem for most traditional screening equipment sieving the moist fine coal. It would lead to the low preparation efficiency and the low screening efficiency. The flip-flow screen is a new kind of screening equipment by using flip-flow motion of elastic screen surfaces to implement the separation of material. With the remarkable advantages of the extraordinary vibration intensity of screen surface, the hole is difficult to be plugged, and the screening efficiency is improved. In this paper, a kind of centralized forced flip-flow screen (CFFS) was proposed based on the crank rocker mechanism. The flip-flow motion of elastic screen surfaces is achieved by the periodical reversed motion of inner and outer screen boxes driven by crank. The advantages of the CFFS include considerable deformation of the screen surface, stable flip-flow quantity, low working noise, low vibration influence on environment, etc. The principle and construction of the CFFS were introduced, and the modal analysis and harmonic response analysis of key components (the crank and the linkage) were implemented based on finite element method (FEM), respectively. The first six orders of natural frequency and vibration modes were obtained. The maximum equivalent stress and strain under working and resonance frequency were achieved. The results illustrate that the resonance frequency is much higher than the working frequency, and the stress and strain are all within the safe limit of the material. The prototype was manufactured, and the sieving experiment demonstrates that the CFFS perform steadily, and screening efficiency is over 80%. The new feasible method of the dry screening was proposed by the CFFS. The corresponding numerical simulation and the experiment provided a reliable basis for the future promotion of similar product design and research.

Reclaimed mine sites have been evaluated so that the public, industry, and land planners may recognize there are innovative designs available for consideration and use. People tend to see cropland, range, and road cuts as a necessary part of their everyday life, not as disturbed areas despite their high visibility. Mining also generates a disturbed landscape, unfortunately one that many consider waste until reclaimed by human beings. The development of mining provides an economic base and use of a natural resource to improve the quality of human life. Equally important is a sensitivity to the geologic origin and natural pattern of the land. Wisely shaping our environment requires a design plan and product that responds to a site's physiography, ecology, function, artistic form, and public perception. An examination of selected sites for their landscape design suggested nine approaches for mining reclamation. The oldest design approach around is nature itself. Humans may sometimes do more damage going into an area in the attempt to repair it. Given enough geologic time, a small-site area, and stable adjacent ecosystems, disturbed areas recover without mankind's input. Visual screens and buffer zones conceal the facility in a camouflage approach. Typically, earth berms, fences, and plantings are used to disguise the mining facility. Restoration approaches the best land use as restoring to its original condition. Rehabilitation targets social or economic benefits by reusing the site for public amenities, most often in urban centers with large populations. A mitigation approach attempts to protect the environment and return mined areas to use with scientific input. The reuse of cement, building rubble, and macadam meets only about 10% of the demand for aggregate. Recognizing the limited supply of mineral resources and encouraging recycling efforts are steps in a renewable resource approach. An educative design approach effectively communicates mining information through outreach, land stewardship, and community service. Mine sites used for art show a celebration of beauty and experience-abstract geology. The last design approach combines art and science in a human-nature ecosystem termed integration. With environmental concerns, an operating or reclaimed mine site can no longer be considered isolated from its surroundings. Site analysis of mine works needs to go beyond site-specific information and relate to the regional context of the greater landscape. Understanding design approach can turn undesirable features (mines and pits) into something perceived as desirable by the public.

A large number of minerals and chemicals (Table 1), some mineral-derived, are used in the treatment of both potable water and domestic sewage waste water and solids (Anon., 1990). In water treatment there are ten principal process uses as shown in Table 2 (Anon., 1990), which also lists the major chemicals in each process. Since lime (calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and dolomitic lime) is the largest chemical (by tonnage) used in water treatment, this chapter will deal primarily with this product. Note that it is included in five of the process uses shown in Table 2, and that indirectly it is also used in at least one other category (taste and odor control, where lime is used with potassium permanganate to provide optimum pH condition). POTABLE WATER TREATMENT Water Softening The biggest use for lime in water treatment involves water softening, where it serves to reduce carbonate hardness caused by dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate compounds. Currently there are more than 1000 domestic water softening plants (Table 3) located in most sections of the country, but particularly in Ohio, other midwestern states, Florida, and Texas, where limestone bedrock abounds (Anon., 1990). Among the other uses for lime in water treatment are coagulation, disinfection, and removal of heavy metals due to high pH softening, removal of certain radioactive and organic compounds and fluorides, neutralization of acidic water, removal of silica, particularly with dolomitic lime, and removal of color. Most of the above advantages accompany water softening, although at some plants lime is used specifically for one purpose, such as silica removal with dolomitic lime, minimizing pipeline corrosion by addition of lime to correct an aggressive water, and others. Hardness in water comprises two types - carbonate hardness, caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates and bi- carbonates, and non-carbonate hardness caused by dissolved non- carbonate salts, particularly calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium chloride. Total hardness is the sum of the carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness. Waters are classified as soft (0 to 75 mg/L as CaCO,), moderate (75 to 150 mg/L), hard (150 to 300 mg/L), and very hard (above 300 mg/L). Most water plants strive to reduce total hardness to about 100 mg/L, although in recent years the tendency in some cities has been to allow a little higher value in order to reduce both chemical costs and the amount of water softening sludges produced. There are four basic types of softening plants: lime softening, primarily to reduce carbonate hardness; lime-soda softening, for reduction of both types of hardness (in some plants caustic soda is used in place of soda ash, but it is more costly); split lime-zeolite, where a base exchange mineral is employed in place of soda ash (this system also requires salt [sodium chloride] to regenerate the zeolite mineral); and finally zeolite softening, which is generally used in small systems for private houses and small municipalities. Principal disadvantages of the latter system are its relatively high cost and the salt requirement, which introduces considerable quantities of soluble salts into the waste water discharge system.

Este capítulo revisa las etapas que deben seguirse desde el momento de considerar la molienda autógena en el desarrollo de un nuevo depósito de mineral o en la expansión de una planta existente, hasta la compra de un molino autógeno. En este caso el término autógeno incluye: semi-autógeno, molinos de pebbles secundarios y molino de bolos (trozos), así como los sistemas de molienda autógena total. También se han incluido las alternativas por vía húmeda y seca. Antes de programar el ensayo debe decidirse cuantas muestras brutas son requeridas para calcular propiamente las posibilidades de molienda autógena del depósito. También ha de tomarse la decisión, de como y donde deben tomarse las muestras, por ejemplo: planta piloto situada en el sitio de localización de la planta o en otro lugar establecido; molienda en húmedo y/o en seco....etc. En el mismo programa del ensayo se obtendrán ciertos datos fundamentales. Los ensayos deberán incluir un trabajo suficiente. para determinar cuál de las moliendas, totalmente autógena o semi-autógena, debe utilizarse; y qué tipo produce la máxima eficacia en la potencia consumida. También, los otros datos pertinentes deben ser recolectados, como por ejemplo: potencias, tonelajes, alimentación, carga, tamaño del producto, carga circulante, etc. Si es necesaria una molienda secundaria para obtener el tamano final, la decisión de qué molienda debe emplearse (molino de pebbles o molino de bolas) puede requerirse un ensayo de trabajo adicional. Finalmente, la concentración del mineral puede jugar un papel importante en la selección del circuito y debería ser una parte del ensayo final una vez que se ha establecido la molienda. A research project supported by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Iron Ore Cooperative Research Committee was undertaken to reduce the dissolution of fluoride into process water during taconite processing. Leach tests were conducted using rod mill feed samples and water containing varying concentrations of calcium and sodium. Laboratory liberation grinds were performed to evaluate fluoride rejection during grinding and magnetic separation. Tube furnace tests were conducted to evaluate fluoride volatilization during pellet induration. The results indicate that fluoride concentration of process water is a function of both calcium and sodium concentration in process water. It appears that less than 1 percent of the fluoride present in rod mill feed will dissolve in process water during grinding. More than 90 percent of the fluoride present in rod mill feed is rejected with tailings during size reduction and magnetic separation. The furnace tests demonstrate that bentonite and fluxstone (calcite and dolomite) addition to taconite concentrate during pellet production increases the amount of fluoride that volatilizes during induration. Lime hydrate addition to pellets decreases the amount of fluoride that volatilizes during pellet induration. During acid pellet production approximately three times more fluoride enters the water during induration-off-gas scrubbing than during grinding. When fluxed pellets are produced three to eight times more fluoride enters the water during off-gas scrubbing than during taconite grinding.

Statistical exploration uses statistical methods to identify targets for more detailed investigation by estimating the odds of occurrence of mineral deposits. The study area which contains the possible targets may be as large as 1 000 000 km2 or as small as 100 km2. Results are presented in terms of a probability index for the existence of a deposit or, more precisely, in terms of expected dollar value for a unit area, or even in terms of number, size, and grade of deposits remaining to be discovered. Typically, selected geological, geophysical, or geochemical information is systematically quantified and statistically analyzed by using the computer in order to distinguish between geological environments on the basis of the probability that they contain undiscovered deposits of a specific type. All possible targets are compared with one another by using information on areas known to contain deposits. The information on the known areas is either a set of control data consisting of values for the same parameters as are quantified for the entire study area, or it embodies a specific model for the occurrence of a given deposit type. Examples of both procedures will be discussed in this chapter.

In the previous work (1,2), initial developments in a novel tracing technique employing specifically prepared trace particiles were fully described. The synthetic tracers produced proved to represent coal particles in specific gravity based coal washing equipment in this work, a detection system has been developed that can detect the artificial tracers in the product or refuse part of the density-separating coal cleaning units and thus indicate the performance characteristics of the circuit. This system could not only be a simple, accurate, and inexpensive replacement for the usual time-consuming washability analysis, but it could also be used for diagnostic purposes in coal separatory devices.

The work of engineers responsible for the design and performance of mine facilities is often challenged by economic and practical constraints in the field. Problems have developed in implementing design criteria dictated by persons or agencies not familiar with the dynamic nature of mine engineering. Regional and site-specific conditions frequently require changes to standard designs, or the use of a completely innovative approach, which is not provided for in the regulations. The implementation of engineering design, therefore, usually requires a hard-sell approach to management and regulatory agencies that allows for a happy-medium to all parties concerned. Flexibility on the part of the regulatory agencies is needed to solve operational and environmental problems with sound engineering. Typical hydrologic issues which will be discussed fall in the following general categories: ? Design criteria for sizing water control structures (i.e., culverts, diversion and sedimentation ponds, ditches, etc.) ? Implementation (construction and operation) difficulties ? Regulatory compliance ? Reclamation planning with hydrologic considerations ? Protection of groundwater resources

Coal is found in every major geographic region throughout Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852 over 100 small mines have opened and closed. Last years production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure one illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and western United States. The Arctic region of Alaska generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The Central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of western United States. The Southcentral and Southeastern regions has a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the west coast of the United States.
