Lead-zinc production at MIM, Mount Isa includes three mines, a lead concentrator, zinc filter plant and lead refinery. Lead production is vertically integrated with lead-silver bullion shipped from Australia to London for refining. Zinc is sold as a concentrate. All three mines have reached varying states of maturity mining a multitude of orebodies having significant variation in grades and metallurgical recovery for three metals. Based on current levels of measured resources, the remaining project life is at least ten years. The objective is to schedule production over the life of all three mines so as to maximize the present value of the complex. Additional scheduling complexity arises out of the implementation of long-term schedules, capital expansion projects for both mining and processing, the presence of substantial inferred reserves and interactions with MIM copper production. A large-scale, time-dynamic, life-of-complex Mixed Integer Program (MIP) production schedule was formulated to optimize lead/zinc cash flow based on a detailed life of project production scheduling study. The requirements for such a study are detailed herein. The operational feasibility of the MIP solution is compared against a non-optimal approach to strategic life-of-mine scheduling. The strategic planning emphasis placed on the MIP is compared to the implementation of a life-of-mine schedules at Mount Isa using spreadsheets and other popular commercial mine schedulers.

The bulk of plain carbon steel is produced through conventional Basic Oxygen or Electric Arc Furnace routes where the development of the AC Ladle Furnace has made it possible to also produce alloy steels. Smaller Ladle Furnaces have limitations such as lower efficiency; high electrode consumption and diminutive yields rendering them uneconomical to operate and making the processing of low carbon steel grades difficult due to carbon pick up. The demand for special steels and alloys with strict specifications is increasing while commodity prices remain competitive. The production of special steels and alloys have specific process control requirements and the development of the induction melting furnace (IMF) has made it possible to produce smaller batches economically. Refining and alloying of the melt in the IMF further enhance the efficiency. The INDUREF furnace offers increased productivity and flexibility through increased thermal efficiency and can be utilised for holding molten metal for further processing such as granulating, atomising, nitriding, alloy additions and desulphurisation of Ferro-alloys and steels. The system utilises a specially engineered ladle which is placed in an induction-heating assembly comprised of a stationary water-cooled copper coil and lamination packs. The addition of equipment for vacuum degassing and decarburisation of steels and alloys is also feasible. Benefits are: ? No electrode consumption or carbon pick-up ? "Cobre Las Cruces mine extracts copper minerals from a VMS deposit located in the well-known Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB). As an open pit, it is distinguished geologically from other IPB mines by the presence of around 150 m of Tertiary soft marls, known locally as the Guadalquivir Blue Marls, followed by a regionally important aquifer. Below the marls and aquifer the mineralization is hosted by rocks typical of the Palaeozoic within the IPB, comprising gossan, tuffs, slates, and sulphides.This combination of a substantially soft rock and more competent, older (but still occasionally problematic) Palaeozoic lithologies constitutes a unique geological framework and presents substantial challenges in maintenance of slope stability, and therefore operational safety, at the mine site. This paper describes the fundamental design, excavation, and monitoring measures implemented at the mine to maintain safe production, and the lessons learnt during the mine development. IntroductionAs a modern Spanish mine, Las Cruces is committed to the use of best available technology and practices with the aim of guaranteeing the production of ore in a safe environment. From a practical perspective, this implies the realization of a high quality pit design, ongoing geotechnical mapping of exposed slopes to ensure conformity with design, and use of leading geotechnical surveillance technology to complement visual observations. The focus of this article is to illustrate how, at a mine site with potentially problematic soil/rock conditions, multiple advanced techniques employed from design stage analysis through to final pit configuration and vigilance, were combined to achieve an overall control of the ground conditions. Detailed investigations have been conducted into 21 rockbursts which caused damage to excavations in deep South African gold mines, in many instances resulting in the death or serious injury of workers. The objective of this study is to determine the principal factors controlling the severity and distribution of damage, so that strategies to reduce the hazard of rockbursts may be developed. It was found that the source mechanism is often controlled by the mine layout, and regional structures such as faults and dykes; while local rock conditions and support systems strongly influence the location and severity of damage. In the short term the most important lever for reducing the rockburst hazard is the effective implementation of existing rock engineering knowledge and technology.

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL. To solve the support stability control problem for a coal face with large angles along both strike and dip (CLSD), the ’support-surrounding rock’ mechanical model has been developed, which takes into account the impact of the dip angle of the seam on the stability of the support in the strike direction. The mechanical relationships of the critical topple angle and critical slip angle of the support along the strike of the coal face with large dip angle and the support height, support resistance, friction coefficient, and other factors have been derived through the mechanical analysis of support stability in the strike direction of CLSDs in the free state, the operating state, and the special state. The research findings were applied to a fully mechanized CLSD in Xinji Coal Mine. The maximum underhand angle and overhand angle in strike are 42° and 25° respectively, and the maximum dip is 39°. It is calculated that during underhand mining and overhand mining, the critical support resistances for avoiding support toppling are 3723 kN and 1714 kN respectively, and the critical support resistances for avoiding slipping of the support are 7405 kN and 6606 kN respectively. Thus, the selection of type ZZ7600/18/38 hydraulic roof support for the coal face is justified. Measures to prevent sliding of the support and the installation of a limiting stop maintain the support runs in good condition and ensure safe and efficient mining of CLSD.

Over 206 million tons of hard coal were mined in South African collieries in 1996. Some 132.5 millions tons came from underground operations and approximately 120 million tons came from bord-and-pillar workings resulting in between 100 000 and 150 000pillars being formed. Coal pillar design remains a significant feature of South African mining. This paper reviews South African coal pillar design procedures in the light of 90 pillar collapses that have occurred since 1904. It shows that, while the current pillar strength formula is still valid within the original empirical range of Salamon1,cognisance must be taken of local conditions. Current South African coal pillar research is attempting to account for the variations in local conditions with the emphasis on the effect of discontinuities and pillar deterioration. It is suggested that a more holistic approach to pillar design be adopted to include a design methodology that examines the stability of the roof, pillar and floor of the underground workings. Using this approach, deviations from the empirical database used by Salamon and Munro will be incorporated into the design methodology resulting in more stable underground workings.

Although not fully accepted in South Africa, the Theory of Sampling originally proposed by Pierre Gy is fast becoming the cornerstone of sampling practice throughout the world. The growing acceptance of Gy?s Theory of Sampling in South Africa can be attributed to a number of factors, chief amongst them being the development of a tradable mineral asset market, the promulgation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), the growing number of commercial and academic courses that are offered on sampling, and the regulation of the industry through internationally acceptable guidelines and rules for reporting and trading in mineral assets. The size of the South African minerals industry and the dependence of our economy on mineral production have also meant that correct sampling is of key importance to mineral trade. ISO standards have been the principal guides for producers of mineral bulk commodities who produce to customers? specifications, whereas Gy?s insights have been most readily accepted by precious and base metals producers whose product is sold into metal markets. Understanding of small-scale variability is essential in the precious and base-metal industries, but detailed studies of the effects of heterogeneity have not been as productive in the bulk commodities. Sampling practices at different stages of mineral development from exploration, face sampling and grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical sub-sampling, point of sale sampling, and sampling in the laboratory are considered in the gold, platinum, ferrous metal, and coal industries. A summary of the impact of poor sampling in these industries is presented. Generally it appears that poor sampling practice is most likely to erode mineral asset value at the early stages of mineral development. The benefits of good sampling are considered, especially with regard to the financial implications of bias and error on large and consistent consignments of bulk commodities. "One of the most useful approaches to a complex problem is to model the system which gives rise to the problem and to perform simulations through the model to find appropriate solutions. The Engel Model may be used as such a simulator to investigate the problem of the exploration for natural resources.The Engel Model is based on a two-stage search procedure in which a known area (A) which contains m prizes is subjected to search by n coverings. During the first-stage search the sensor system records signals which may be a response from prizes (that is, true signals) or may be false. Signals tend to cluster around a prize and a cluster size consists of s signals. If a circle of radius R is drawn around each signal some will overlap and the overlap from s signals contains a prize. The cost of a single covering in which each point of the area comes under observation once, is designated E1. Second-stage detailed search is expensive and is confined to areas of overlap of s circles; it leads to the location of prizes. Second-stage search of the whole area costs Ea units. The expected value, V, of a prize is known and its development cost is E3 units.The sensor system characteristics are defined by the circle of radius R around a signal, which should be small compared with the total area A and enters the model as a parameter a x R2/A. The probability of a false signal during a single covering of a circle of radius I is a known constant, A.This model was applied to the search for uranium ore bodies using two different types of occurrence. In the first, the Wyoming Basin type, the area is relatively large (A = 1 496 square miles) and a few (m = 4) large prizes occur (expected value V = $30 million). In the second area, which represents the Ambrosia Lake region of New Mexico, the area is smaller (A = 212 square miles) and contains many (m = 200) smaller prizes (expectedvalue of a prize V,$2 million). The three costs, E1, E2, E3, are adjusted to the different circumstances in the two areas.Simulations were performed using n = 1 to 40 coverings with cluster sizes s = 0 to 19; the radius R was varied from 0.52 to 3 miles (and, therefore, a = 0.002 to 0.133 0, respectively, dependent on the area of interest). The value of A was varied from 0.01 to 0.10.Profitable programs were found over a wide range of the parameters; the two areas required different strategies to achieve maximum profit. In the Ambrosia Lake region a few passes (n = 4 to 6) with small cluster sizes (s = 2 to 6) are more profitable, whereas in the Wyoming Basin region a large number of passes (n = 35 to 40) and cluster sizes of s = 5 to 10 are most profitable.As pointed out by Allais (1957) the larger prizes are the most important in deciding the successful outcomes of exploration programs, and the profit margin in the search for a few large prizes is sufficient to yield success over a wide range of programs. Such programs require very large investments if they are to be successful.To refine the Engel Simulator as a decision-maker in selecting the most profitable exploration programs it is necessary to obtain firm estimates of the sensor system characteristics, that is, of R, a and ? (lambda)."

Tin plating operations are of a complex nature due to the many operational variables that need to be controlled in order to create a product of required quality. The work in this report lays the basics for the control of a halogen plating operation based on the DuPont tinplating set-up with regard to the chemical make-up of the plating solution, as well as operational variables such as temperature and current density. To evaluate these aspects of the process, a rotating cathode Hull-cell set-up was used. This allowed for a laboratory scale plating arrangement that simulates industry closely with regard to chemical and hydro-dynamic considerations. Typical industry accepted standards were obtained for the values of operational variables and a ?baseline? test was conducted employing these standards. All subsequent tests conducted were benchmarked against this baseline result. A large suite of results was obtained in which it was found that changes could be made to the industry accepted norm which would improve on the stability of the operation and therefore the quality of the final tin-plated product. Examples of these results are: an increase in stannous tin concentration, an increase in sodium chloride concentration and a slightly elevated plating temperature. In addition, conditions were found that must be avoided to prevent instability and poor product quality.

In open pit mine design, it is customary for geotechnical engineers to define the appropriate slope design angles within practical limits. The conventional approach to slope angle design is based on the comparison of calculated stability indicators, such as the factor of safety (FS) and the probability of failure (PF), with generic acceptability criteria not directly related to the impacts of failure. A major drawback of this type of approach is related to the difficulty of defining meaningful acceptability criteria. An alternative methodology of pit slope design is proposed, where the economic impacts of potential slope failures are calculated and used as the elements on which to apply the acceptability criteria for design. The methodology is based on the construction of a graph, referred to as a risk map, that relates the probability of exceeding the economic impact of slope failure to the magnitude of the impact measured in monetary terms. The process includes the analysis of a selected number of representative years of the mine plan and slope sections of the pit areas to define the required inputs for the construction of the risk map. The paper discusses the concepts used in interpreting the probability of slope failure, and describes the approach followed for the estimation of the economic impacts of slope failure and the construction of the risk map. Finally, the two main uses of the risk map are discussed, including the comparison with acceptability criteria for the evaluation of a specific open pit design and the comparative analysis of open pit design options in terms of value and risk to identify optimum pit layouts.

This paper reports on recent field observations on the performance of support systems under different corrosion environments in Canadian underground mines. Phenomenological data are used to gain a better understanding of the main causes of corrosion in underground metal mines. Preliminary field data collected from five metal mines have been complemented by atmospheric and water sample analysis as well as fractography and metallographic studies. This has identified dominant factors that control the corrosion of support systems. The data are analysed in order to develop a support strategy for mines operating in corrosion environments.

In a gravity separation device, particle shape, size and density all play a role. The combination of these determines where each individual particle reports to in the viscous fluid, where particle crowding (solids to water ratio) also plays a role. To understand the performance of gravity separation devices in the heavy mineral industry, these particle characteristics need to be measured. There are various challenges in analysing particle density and particle size simultaneously for the purpose of quantifying gravity separator performance, not to mention particle shape. These analytical challenges include the high cost of high-density sink-float fractionation, toxicity of high-density sink-float media, inability of sink-float media to fractionate at densities greater than 4.0 g/cm3, and the time-intensive nature of these fractionations. The use of the detailed particle-by-particle output from Qemscan® particle mineral analyses (PMA) as a fast and cost-effective alternative is evaluated. The size and density outputs from the Qemscan® were employed to characterize the performance of a heavy mineral spiral concentrator as an example. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an electromagnetic geophysical reflection technique that maps reflections associated with a change in electric properties of the target medium. It can thus be used to map the geometry of geological features and fractures as these can have different electromagnetic properties to intact rock. GPR was used successfully to determine the position and nature of the fractures in the tunnel sidewall, in the area of the simulated rockburst experiment. By comparing the radar scans acquired before with those acquired after the blast, it was possible to determine which fractures were reactivated by the blast and where new fractures were developed. It was found that the mining-induced fractures that formed during the development of the tunnel were re-activated by the simulated rockburst, as indicated by their increased reflectance on the radar scans. In addition, several new tunnel sidewall parallel fractures developed in the area of the blastholes. GPR thus clearly shows how and where the fracture pattern changed as a result of the blast and contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms of damage associated with the blast, and perhaps rockbursts in general.

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the interaction between Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock during the development and application of Long Hole drilling as a viable, practical method of narrow reef mining. Appendix I identifies the people from Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock who participated in the project. Experiments in long hole drilling and blasting were conducted in a number of mines during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some of the advantages envisaged were: ? The face would require no daily examination ? No barring down or immediate face support required ? No sockets to clean ? Only a few well drilled holes rather than large numbers of short blast holes ? Avoidance of poorly-marked holes, inaccurate drilling and improper charging ? Better supervision and better face advance. Holes 50 mm in diameter were drilled parallel to the stope face by pneumatic rock drills from advance strike gullies. Holes were charged with amon gelignite cartridges. All holes were traced with detonating cord to ensure propagation of the explosive along the entire hole length. Rock was blasted onto a rolling scatter pile. A number of reasons have been cited for the failure of this mining method. The two most important were: ? problems in controlling hole deviation which was exacerbated by the fractured ground ? difficulty of charging up holes in fractured ground, due to relative movement of rocks along fracture surfaces over the hole length. The idea of drilling a few long holes parallel to the face rather than a large number of short blast holes perpendicular to the face was an attractive option to mechanize narrow reef mining. This particular project started in 1998. Initial trial The Union Section of Anglo Platinum purchased a Solo H 606 RA long hole drilling rig from Sandvik Tamrock in 1997. In order to evaluate long hole drilling as a basis for face mechanization. The Solo series of drill rig was selected because it combines high drilling performance and good drilling accuracy with high versatility with a compact size. The mining method proposed by a consultant to Anglo Platinum was based on the current trackless mining method practised by Union Section. The trackless mining method is better described as a trackless development and transport method. Reef strike drives were installed approximately 40 metres apart on dip using trackless equipment. Reef was mined using hand-held pneumatic rock drills and scraper winches and the excavation was supported by sticks and crush pillars at the top of the panel. Rock scraped from the panel was loaded by Lad Haul Dumps (LHDs), trammed to an inclined haulage, and loaded into trucks for transport to the surface. It was intended that the Solo would drill from the bottom advance strike drive to the top advance strike drive. Blasted rock would still have to be scraped from the panel. It is also difficult to understand how well the support would have survived. In the initial motivation it was stated that drilling accuracy was of the utmost importance. Previous work by Sandvik Tamrock had shown that, in other parts of the world, 20 metre long holes could be drilled with a deviation not exceeding 100 mm provided that: ? holes were collared with low thrust pressure ? operating percussion pressure was kept low -often not ? exceeding 10 MPa ? drilling was to be with tubes, not rods. In early 1998 initial trials with the Solo H 606 RA were inconclusive; attempts were made to drill 40 metre long holes from one advance strike drive to another. Difficulty was experienced in measuring hole straightness and accuracy, there was no survey of the holes, and no blasting was done to expose hole barrels. A long hole mining system was then defined, with a corresponding face mining system, which led to the design of a test programme for the Solo drilling rig. Earlier experience at Telfer The proposed face mining system was based on a mining method that is practised at Telfer Gold Mine in Western Australia. Telfer has a series of domed reefs that dip at angles of less than 20° to more than 40°. The ore bodies are all thin, with widths from 0.6 metres to 0.8 metres. Figure 1 shows the face layout. Experience at Telfer indicated the following: ? The spacing and size of the dip pillars should be based on the rock mechanics of Union Section ? The length of the face is determined by the ability to correctly position the blast holes. Positioning of blast holes is a function of hole straightness and hole direction. Blast holes in Telfer were drilled 64 mm diameter with retrac bits from Sandvik. Extension steel was T38 by 1.8 metre lengths. A guide rod was fitted immediately behind the bit. To achieve greater accuracy' operators drill at relatively low percussion and thrust pressures. Results show that very good accuracy is achieved in 20 metre stopes and only fair accuracy in longer stopes. A risk study was carried out at the Cerrejon coal mine in order to assess the impacts of pit slope failure in terms of safety of personnel and destruction of equipment with economic consequences. Results of the assessment enabled the definition of risk treatment requirements and the identification of key aspects to consider in a risk treatment plan. The approach included the following tasks: (1) Assessment of the total probability of failure (POF) representative of the stability conditions of typical footwall and highwall slopes. For this purpose, stability analyses were carried out to define the Design POF, which accounts for the variability of strength parameters and represents the normal conditions considered for slope design. Strength parameters for highwall slope analysis were derived from borehole data obtained with a geotechnical drilling campaign. The Total POF was estimated through the use of Source Response Diagrams (SRD) in order to incorporate other sources of uncertainty not accounted for, like changes in geometry, variability of rock conditions due to geological or operational factors, changes in groundwater conditions and occurrence of seismic events. (2) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure on safety of personnel. The assessment was performed through the use of event tree analysis to establish the probability of fatality caused by slope failures, from the Total POF defined in the previous task. This analysis required the evaluation of personal exposure to slope failures. Also, the assessment included benchmarking of acceptability criteria in terms of probability of fatality and the evaluation of options of risk mitigation to comply with these criteria. (3) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure in terms of economic losses associated with impact on equipment. The analysis included the evaluation of equipment exposure to slope failures, and it was performed through event tree analysis to establish the probability of an economic loss associated to total or partial lost of equipment, from the total POF value defined in the first task. The magnitude of the economic losses was estimated from the costs of damaged equipment, lost production and site restoration. Options of risk mitigation were also examined in terms of economic losses. The risk assessment process applied to the Cerrejón mine showed how the system can be applied to evaluate the consequences of failure in terms of personnel safety and economics and to identify the more adequate risk mitigation options. The system can be an extremely powerful tool in the mine design process and provides the opportunity to rationalize the geotechnical information requirements, once the risk criteria have been defined by management. The main purpose of this paper is to present the process; therefore, the emphasis has been put on the methodology followed rather than on the actual results obtained.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."
