The Bureau of Mines investigated the distribution of uranium and various methods of ore sampling in a uranium deposit typical of those in the Morrison Formation sandstone of the Ambrosia Lake area, Grants mining district, north-western New Mexico. Chemical and radiometric assays of diamond-drill core samples are compared in detail by statistical techniques, and the assay data are correlated with the stratigraphy of the deposit. Conclusions applicable to ore-reserve estimation in geologically similar uranium deposits are drawn.

Phthalic anhydride is a solid having the formula C8H4O3. It is an important intermediary in production of anthraquinene, alkyd reins, and plasticizers. The combined annual production of phthalic anhydride reported by 10 major manufacturers for 112,250 tons. The raw materials in the manufacture of phthalic anhydride have been the source of numerous fires and explosions. Consequently, the need was felt to determine the temperature flammability and the ignition temperatures crude basic raw material in most phthalic anhydride production crude phthalic anhydride, and pure phthalic anhydride.

Processing of nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-des liming and anionic flotation of calcium-activated silica has been investigated using innovative procedures as a means of improving operating costs. Areas chosen for cost-cutting evaluation were grinding, fine screening, and water conservation and reclamation. The investigation was performed on Marquette range nonmagnetic taconites in the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center flotation pilot plant, at feed rates ranging between 900 and 1,100 lb/hr. With fully integrated water reclamation, flotation concentrates containing 65.8 percent Fe and 3.4 percent Si02 were made in the best operating period, with accompanying weight and iron recoveries of 40 and 74 percent, respectively. During this same period, the estimated cost of both flotation and water reclamation reagents was only $0.80 per ton of concentrate (1968 pricing basis). This cost is about 15 percent lower than obtained previously at this Center for flotation reagents only. The investigation demonstrated additional potential savings in operating costs of approximately $0.96 per ton of concentrate through autogenous grinding as a substitute for ballmilling. Fine screening of intermediate concentrates was employed advantageously, but the frequency of blinding may be a factor militating against use of the screen in this flotation system.

The Bureau of Mines has calculated general time-dependent solutions for radon diffusion from cylindrical and slab rock samples containing uniform radium distribution. Results have been obtained for several sets of boundary conditions. The method is suitable for determining the effective diffusion coefficient and the effective porosity for radon.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated four working-level radiation-measurement methods and optimized them from the inherent and statistical error standpoint. Optimization with respect to various sampling and measurement times yielded no marked improvement over the existing methods. However, when appropriate approximations are made and evaluated, these two-measurement methods can be reduced to simple formulas, eliminating a need to use nomograms. These modified methods also have improved inherent error characteristics. A new method--a combination of two existing methods--with improved inherent and statistical errors has been suggested. All the pertinent equations are given, together with the computer program, so that any two-measurement method can be readily evaluated.

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. The main reasons for developing an induction system for signaling from the cage are, first, to increase safety, and second, to effect economies in the operation of cage and ship hoists, especially when work is being done in the shaft. To-day nearly all mines which employ safe methods have installed safety gates on cages, at the different levels, and at the collar of the shaft. Under the old system in some instances signals could only be Given from the station outside the cage, and in other cases, after the signal was given the only method whereby those riding on the cage could control its movements consisted of pulling the bell-rope hanging in the shaft, an uncertain and somewhat hazardous procedure at best. With the system herein described, however, it is possible, without opening the gates, to signal to the engineer from any place in the shaft whether or not the cage is moving, and finder the same conditions it is possible to converse with the engineer by using the telephone. In short, the cage tender has at all times an opportunity either to signal or talk to the engineer without leaving the cage.

The Bureau of Mines conducted five reconnaissance magnetometer traverses across a small abandoned chromite mine in the State Line district of Pennsylvania and Maryland to determine the geophysical response of the area. The results indicate that more extensive geophysical surveys of the region might establish some worthwhile guidelines for chromite exploration. While chromite only rarely can be detected directly by magnetic methods, there is a possibility that geophysical signatures in the adjacent host rock could provide some guidelines for further exploration. Prior to 1875, all the chromite produced in the United States came from the State Line district, and the potential for discovering additional podiform deposits could be significant. Virtually no state-of-the-art geuphysical or geochemical studies have been conducted in this district since World War II and sizable areas remain undeveloped and suitable for exploration. While the results reported in this paper are not supported by drilling, it may encourage others to investigate the area more fully for improved methods of detecting subsurface podiform chromite deposits. New theories on the emplacement of ophiolites also could contribute to an assessment of the chromite potential of the serpentinite belt.

The concept of data availability must be addressed, because there are perceptible changes from year to year, and the availability of accurately reported, precisely defined statistics and nonstatistical information provides the only sound basis for analytical studies required for government policy planning or industry market analysis. As the countries of Eastern Europe and the former U.S.S.R. undergo the transition from centrally planned economies to market economies, there has been a perceptible increase in information availability for rather obvious reasons. Any industrial operation seeking economic assistance from Government and/or private sources outside the country in which the facility is sited must provide some appraisal of its operations at the time it seeks assistance, as well as some information on previous performance to serve as tools in evaluating its potential under the proposed development scheme for which it seeks financial assistance. Additionally, there was growing governmental recognition that concealment of much of the national mineral production, trade, and consumption data for purposes of national military and/or economic security probably never was very successful, never was really necessary for most commodities, and certainly proved unnecessary with the end of the so-called cold war. This report on methods employed for dehydrating oil-field emulsions, is the second of a series prepared as a result of a study of oil-field emulsions recently completed by the writer. The first paper2 dealt with the factors responsible for the formation of emulsions. A third paper will discuss the physical chemistry involved in the formation and resolution of such emulsions. In the early development of the oil fields of Pennsylvania, no emulsion troubles of any consequence were encountered, nor to any serious extent in the oil fields of other Eastern States: However, with the development of fields west of the Mississippi in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and California, where heavier oils of different characteristics were found, the problem of dealing with cut oil soon became of great importance.

Two lime sinter processes for recovering alumina from clay, the double-leach process and the single-leach process, are evaluated in this Bureau of Mines report. In both processes, clay and limestone are mixed and sintered to form calcium aluminate from which alumina is extracted as sodium aluminate by leaching with a dilute solution of sodium carbonate. The pregnant liquor is desilicated, then carbonated to precipitate alumina trihydrate which is recovered and calcined to a,-alumina. The fixed capital costs for plants producing 1,000 tons per day of alumina are $85 million for the double-leach process and $86 million for the single-leach process based on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index of 240.0. Because plant locations are variable with respect to the proximity of clay and limestone deposits, a nomograph is included to determine operating costs at various delivered costs of clay and limestone. For plants at which the delivered cost of clay containing 30 percent A1203 is $2 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $1 per ton, the operating costs are $81.04 and $89.87 per ton of alumina for the double-leach process and single-leach pro-cess, respectively.

Natural gas was the only economically significant mineral produced. A significant amount of the gas output was consumed in the production of nitrogen fertilizer and electric power. Proved reserves of natural gas were abundant and at least sufficient to supply most of the country's industrial and domestic needs for many decades to come. Other mineral production was of little importance to the Bangladesh economy, although there were prospects for developing some of the nonmetallic minerals. The flat river-delta terrain comprising nearly all of Bangladesh made the potential for discovering major, economically exploitable mineral deposits poor. The deep sediments, however, have good potential for crude oil or additional natural gas discoveries.

Experimental modifications have been made by the Bureau of Mines on standard pneumatic rock drills to reduce the noise of the air exhaust, drill steel resonance noise, and noise radiated by the drill body. A close-fitting case and muffler around the drill body, consisting of a metallic honeycomb skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber on the inside and a durable outer shell, provide both exhaust and drill body noise muffling and absorption. Drill steel resonance noise is reduced by a constrained-layer treatment consisting of a tubular metal cover bonded to the ouside of the rod by a viscoelastic filler. Damping alloy components have been developed to reduce metallic resonance noise. Combined, these modifications have reduced the drilling noise level in granite from 115 dbA to 97 dbA. Data are presented on the individual and combined effects of these modifications on drilling noise and performance.

This is the second of a series of progress reports describing work undertaken at the San Manuel copper mine to study the geologic factors influencing block caving of the deposit. The first report described the work done from April 1954 to March 1956.3/ This report describes the progress from March 1956 through March 1958 and presents additional maps, factural data, inferences, and conclusions resulting from a continuation of the underground geological work. As outlined in these reports, the study thus far has shown that the principal geologic factors affecting block caving are structure, rock types, alteration, mineralization, oxidation, and presence of water. Structure is fundamentally the most important. Systematic fracturing governed the extent and grade of primary ore mineralization and tangibly affects the subsidence or ground movement, which extends from the mine workings to the surface because of the block caving.

The objective of this project was to perform a preliminary study to determine the desirability/practicality of burying the communication cables in underground mines in order to protect then from the effects of fires and explosions We conducted discussions with Government and industry specialists on the physics of mine fires and explosions, mine disaster fighting, rescue, and investigation activities, and on nine operations. In addition we examined published experimental work and selected detailed NSHA accident reports on fires and explosions in underground mines. We found the overall desirability /practicality of cable burial must be regarded at this time as highly questionable, because of its benefit limitations to special sceneries, its practical operational shortcomings, and the availability of alternative cable protection options.

An evaluation was made to determine the economics of utilizing waste fluosilicic acid for production of (1) calcium fluoride, and (2) anhydrous hydro-gen fluoride. Two versions of each process were considered and compared. The evaluation showed that both products could be produced and marketed competitively. Lowest estimated product sales prices required to yield a 25-percent return on investment before taxes (discounted cash flow basis) was $339.34 per ton of hydrogen fluoride and $48.64 per ton of calcium fluoride.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory, has undertaken a study to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), hold up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSRs in the seventh phase of testing from May 1999 to August 2000. The SCSRs were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator. The results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their approved inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily. The deployed CSE SR-100s, however, exhibited significantly higher inhaled carbon dioxide (CO2) levels than new units, as they did in the previous two phases. Several Draeger OXY K-Pluses that rattled when shaken were found to have potassium superoxide (KO2) particles throughout the breathing circuit, including the mouthpiece. Draeger investigated the problem and developed a shake test to detect damaged units. The durations of new Ocenco M-20s were statistically significantly longer than those of deployed units, although only by 2 min.

"INTRODUCTION This report is another of the series on the effect of drouth and low water on the pollution of streams by coalmine drainage. A previous report3 dealt with work on Bennett Branch of Sinnanahoning Creek, Pa. This report deals with the results obtained during a similar study of Black Lick Creek, Two Lick Creek, and Yellow Creek. All of these belong to the same drainage system. Two Lick Creek is a tributary to Black Lick Creek, and in turn Yellow Creek is a tributary to Two Lick Creek, as shown in Figure 1.Black Lick Creek was of such a volume that a seasonal investigation was not entirely feasible. Yellow Creek was found to have mines only near the mouth, except a few of status unknown to the writer at the extreme head-waters, and the stream was also more or less inaccessible for regular and frequent sampling.
