A theoretical technique has been developed and verified experimentally for determining the aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles. The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a very important property in determining where that particle deposits in the respiratory tract. Many instruments, such as impactors and cyclones, will determine the aerodynamic size distributions of aerosol particles but few analyze the particles individually. The theoretical approach of our technique is to solve, by use of high speed computers, the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the flow field around an irregular shaped particle of any contour. The computer program will then determine the drag on the particle, and thus the aerodynamic diameter of the particle can be calculated. The experimental approach has been to pass the particles through a centrifuge and collect the particles upon a collection foil. The position of a particle on the foil is an indication of its aerodynamic diameter. These particles were then shadowed in two orthogonal directions and inspected under an SEM. The top view of the particle in the SEM plus the views of the two orthogonal shadows allows one to determine the three dimensional shape of the particle. Studies have been performed on silica, coal and talc particles with aerodynamic diameters in the 1 to 4 um size range. The three dimensional shape, as is determined from SEM analysis was used in the theoretical computer program and the results compared. It was found that in most 'cases the agreement between the experimentally and theoretically determined aerodynamic diameters was within 5%.

Coal, in the process of mining, transportation, and handling and on exposure to the weather, is subject to more or less disintegration. This disintegrated coal is usually called "slack" and amounts often to a considerable percentage of the lump coal produced in the mines. If this slack coal is wasted the loss so occasioned ranges from 5 to 50 per cent, or even more, of the total coal mined. It is therefore clear that the utilization of this waste slack coal becomes a serious economic consideration. When the coal is suitable for the production of coke, the utilization of the slack presents no difficulty, as it is in demand for that purpose. If the coal does not produce good coke, but cakes rather readily, the slack can be used for boiler purposes, as it fuses together more or less quickly, and burns on the furnace grate without great loss. Coal that cakes less readily can be burned on grates of special construc- tion. When so used it is more troublesome to handle, and the waste is greater than when lump coal is used. Consequently the price of much of the slack coal for fuel purposes ranges considerably lower than that of the lump coal from the same mine. The full value of this slack coal as fuel can be realized by first form- ing the coal into a coherent mass or briquet, such briquets, when of good quality, being equal to or of greater value than the original

The great expansion of production of aluminum for war purposes has aroused some concern regarding the available supply of carbon suitable for making carbon electrodes required in the electrolytic aluminum process. Approximately three-quarters of a pound of carbon electrode is consumed for each pound of aluminum produced. 5 Because of its small amount of impurities and its suitable physical characteristics, calcined petroleum coke is the standard material used by the aluminum industry for making electrodes As it may be necessary to use some substitute materials, the possibility of using coke made from coal has been considered. Besides this possible use, information concerning the source of low-ash coals is of general interest. Specifications of the aluminum industry for calcined petroleum coke suitable for the manufacture of electrodes are very stringent in regard to allowable impurities. In one such specification the maximum allowable ash is 1.0 percent; the maximum allowable content of iron (as Fe) is 0.06 percent and that of silicon (as Si) is 0.08 percent; the maximum for cal- cium (as Ca) and for sodium (as Na) is 0.12 percent for each, but the two combined may not exceed 0.12 percent; maximum allowable sulfur is 2.0 per- cent. The presence of barium, nickel, chromium, manganese, cobalt, or vanadium is objectionable, and only extremely small amounts are allowed. In regard to physical properties, the coke is required to be so thoroughly calcined that it has a real density of at least 2.02.

A study was made during 1959-60 of reported nelsonite occurrences in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va. The investigation was limited to core drill- ing on one deposit and beneficiation studies on three deposits. Three diamond-drill holes totaling 562 feet were drilled on the E. M. Hughes property to determine subsurface continuity. Although outcrops as much as 30 feet wide were present on this property, the only nelsonite intersected in the holes ranged from 4 to 18 inches thick. The ilmenite content of the core ranged from 50 to 75 percent. These nelsonite deposits are of secondary importance as a source of titanium, being small, rarely exceeding 1,500 feet in length and 30 feet in width, but they are high grade. Due to the proximity of some of the bodies it might be possible to mine several of them as one operation feeding one mill. Electromagnetic separation on composited samples recovered 83.0 percent of the Tio as an ilmenite concentrate in 68.5 percent of the weight. Two flotation procedures were developed. The first method, using oleic acid as a collector and fluo silicic acid as an apatite depressant on deslimed feed, produced an overall recovery of 59.3 percent in batch tests. The second procedure eliminated desliming. Laurylamine hydrochloride removed silicates in an acid pulp followed by an alkaline apatite flotation with oleic acid as the collector and dextrine as the ilmenite depressant. The ilmenite-rich tailing represented a 66.2-percent recovery of Tio in the batch tests.

Crosson and Peters treat the errors that result in miner location due to errors in the overburden earth model used for computing location. A parallel effort by J. Powell of PMSRC is discussed here, where the location method used is that of the Westinghouse location program - "Miner". This location program was tested by Powell by using arrival times generated from the overburden earth model of Table l* rounded to the nearest millisecond. Location computations were then made using 3 geophones at a time. The average location is tabulated for all geophone triplets except when 3 geophones are in line. Geophone arrays were as shown in Tables 2 and 3. The manner in which the test was done is illustrated in Figure 1. I. SUMMARY OF RESULTS The arrival time differences, based on the Table 1 earth model, together with geophone locations based on the array geometries of Tables 2 and 3, were entered into the computer, together with a stated depth of 700 feet and an estimated overburden seismic velocity of 10,000 feet per second. These parameter values were processed by the location program - "Miner". Figure 2 illustrates the interpretation of the plots and data. The tabular data and plots of Table 4 and Figures 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the location error results obtained. These plots indicate that for sources within the array, the errors are considerably less than the measured errors obtained during field tests of the present location system. The possible reasons for this discrepancy are noted in Part Eight (Earth Models).

A group of organic chemicals, known as wetting agents, has been developed, primarily for use in the textile industry. These chemicals have the property of reducing the surface tension of water when mixed with it in very dilute solutions. The advantage of lowered surface tension is recognized in dust-control work, and several wetting agents, have been tried by dust-control engineers with varying degrees of success. It is well-known that certain solids, coal for instance, are extremely hard to wet with plain water because of the high surface tension of water and the water-repellent action of coal. If the surface tension of the water is reduced, it can be demonstrated that the coal can be wetted easily. This is accomplished practical and at law cost by dissolving a very small percentage of wetting agent in the water that is to be used for wetting purposes. (Care should be exercised in using a wetting agent to be sure that it will not interfere with a subsequent process.) For some time, the comparative efficiency of various wetting agents has been the subject of considerable work by dust-control men at coal mines, as well as by members of the Bureau of Mines 3/, 4/, 5/, 6/. In this connection, a number of samples of air-borne dust have been collected in the mines. With the exception of dust-control measures conditions of dust generation and dissemination were maintained as, nearly uniform as possible. Samples were collected when water alone was sprayed on the cutter bar of a mining machine; various wetting agents were then successively added to the water and more samples of air-borne dust were-collected.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. Each rule that is given is proposed as necessary or helpful to the accomplishment of one or more of these measures. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED Alive.-See definition of " live." The Bureau of Mines determined the kinetics of the reaction of titanium-iron alloys with titanium trichloride dissolved in sodium chloride to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in metallurgical processes involving reduction of the metal halides or alloy refining in fused salts. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction was determined between titanium-iron alloys and titanium trichloride to elucidate the effects of alloy composition on the rate. Measurements were made in an inert atmosphere with a high-temperature thermobalance using high-purity reactants. The rates of the reactions were about 1 x 10-5 g Ti/cm2-sec, and the reaction was phase-boundary controlled. Titanium alloys of the body-centered cubic beta structure reacted faster than those with the hexagonal close-packed alpha structure. The inter-metallic compound, TiFe, reacted very slowly, whereas TiFe2 was inert. Alloys containing above 89 atomic percent iron gained weight by reacting with titanium species in the salt solution and depositing titanium in the alloy. The effect of TiCl3 concentration on the reaction rate was determined from 2 to 12 weight-percent TiC13 and at various alloy compositions. At high iron contents, above 50 atomic percent, the TiC13 concentration effect was small. At lower iron contents, the TiC13 concentration effect was greater for beta-crystalline alloys than for alpha-crystalline alloys. The temperature dependence of the reaction between titanium alloy containing 8.7 atomic percent iron and titanium trichloride was measured over the temperature range 1,062° to 1,220° K, and the energy of activation was 7.7 kilocalories for the reaction.

Landmines are a great threat to military vehicles and their occupants. Mine blasts can completely destroy vehicles and kill all the occupants or disable the vehicle and leave the occupants severely injured. Injuries sustained during a landmine blast come from fragmentation that enters the vehicle through a hull breach, hot gasses expanding through the vehicle, or shock created from the extreme pressure of the blast (Lafrance, L.P. 1998). Mitigating the high acceleration experienced by the occupants during survivable mine blasts is the focus of the research being addressed in this paper. Method The objective of the project reported in this paper was to prove the feasibility that pneumatic seat technologies that employ light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seats and seat backs can be used to protect the crews of lightweight combat vehicles against the detrimental and injurious effects of mine blasts. This protection includes reducing the shock energy experienced by seated vehicle crews during mine blast initiation and at vehicle slam-down to below potentially injurious levels. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the proposed lightweight, foam-filled, inflatable mine blast attenuating seat. It will consist of specially designed interconnected seat and seat back lightweight, foam-filed, air bladders that are supported by a rigid frame. [ ] Results Air gun tests and finite element analyses were conducted to determine the effectiveness of a light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seat shock isolation system in isolating a vehicle occupant from the injurious effects of a mine blast. Figures 2 through 5 show analytical and experimental results associated with a 65.8 kg mass resting on an inflatable air bladder that is exposed to a shock input.

"The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

One of the largest items in the expense of operating a refinery is the cost of the fuel used in distillation and for miscellaneous purposes such as in the heating of buildings and in the generation of electricity. On a B. t. u. basis, the average refinery consumes approximately one-tenth as much fuel as it produces. Theoretically, the fuel consumption at refineries should be much smaller than this, but furnaces can not be designed to be 100 per cent efficient and, in addition, a large part of the waste heat is low-temperature heat which would not pay for the expense of recovering it. Annual surveys of fuel consumption at refineries have been made by the United States Bureau of Mines, beginning with 1925. During the 5-year period, 1925-1929, the refineries made steady progress in fuel economy. This is evidenced by the computed figures of heat requirement per carrel of crude oil refined, which show a decline from 829,000 B. t. u. in 1925 to 639,000 B. t. u. in 1929 (see fig. 1). In 1930, however, 'the trend in fuel economy was reversed and the quantity of heat utilized in refining the average barrel of crude oil rose to 672,000 B. t. u. There were undoubtedly a number of reasons for the apparent decrease in fuel economy at refineries in 1930, chief of which were the tendency to carry the distillation farther instead of merely topping the crude and a gain in the consumption of waste oils, such as acid sludge, which in actual practice yield less heat per unit consumed than has been theoretically assigned to oil.

"Introduction.Southern Illinois and Kentucky are credited with approximately 90% of the fluorspar production of the United States. A small amount of high-grade acid, spar is obtained from the ore by band sorting; the greater part, however, is recovered by jigs and tables as gravel spar containing approximately 85% calcium fluoride. In the jigging and tabling operations, galena is recovered, and enough silica and calcite are removed to raise the calcium fluoride content of the gravel spar to 85%. However, the removal of silica and calcite results in a large loss of spar. With increasing depth in the mines, zinc sulphide, sphalerite, is encountered in increasing quantity and the removal of this has become a serious problem. While the sphalerite can be fairly well removed from the spar by present milling methods, a marketable zinc concentrate can not be made. The experiments described below were made on fluorspar ore from Southern Illinois, by the mining experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at Rolla, Mo., in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.The ore tested contained. 7.3% lead, 27.9% zinc, 35.7% calcium fluoride, 9.5% silica and 4.7%. calcite.Tests and Results. In some preliminary tests it was noticed that a portion of the finely crushed ore adhered strongly to the sample pans, and upon investigation it was found that the adhering material was practically clean spar. By utilizing this property of adhesion 46.8% of the spar was recovered as a product containing 98.3% calcium fluoride. This suggested the possibility of using electrostatic separation."

Within the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) classification of metallnonmetal (MAM) mining, the number of independent contractor' employees has increased significantly in recent years. In 1985 independent contractor employee hours reported to MSHA accounted for 4.5% of all M/NM mining employee hours (excluding office workers); by 1994 that proportion had doubled to 9.0%. As a result, these workers now account for an increasingly significant proportion of fatal and nonfatal mining accidents. According to MSHA's statistics, annually computed fatality incidence rates (the number of fatalities per 200,000 employee hours) for independent contractors working in M/NM mining are consistently higher than those for operator employees. Over the five-year period from 1990 through 1994, 53 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on M/NM mine property (See Table 1). More than one third of these fatalities (36%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage; 21% were machinery accidents; and 11% percent were falling material accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 68% of all independent contractor fatalities occurring on M/NM mine property during these years. Clearly, current efforts to increase the safety of the mining workforce must also address the safety of the independent contractor employee. This report is a preliminary attempt to identify trends in the employment and safety of independent contractor workers by identifying which segments of M/NM mining are experiencing the greatest increases in the number of independent contractor employees and by examining changes in the rates and types of accidents in which these employees are involved. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former US Bureau of Mines (USBM) to engineer techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining workplace associated with coal bumps. Recent research focused on a longwall coal mine in Utah with overburden greater than 750 m (2,500 ft) containing several massive sandstone units. The primary field instrumentation at the site was three-dimensional, full waveform, autonomous microseismic arrays placed underground and on the surface in order to surround the active multi-panel longwall district. The purpose of these arrays was to help investigate the strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation of the longwall. Specifically, the seismic arrays were used to determine the timing and location of the failure in the strata surrounding the active mining. Overall 13,000 seismic events were detected and located with on-site processing during the five months the panel was being mined, including a magnitude (ML) 4.2 event. Of these, a smaller subset of 5,000 well-located events was selected during post-processing to form a consistent data set for analysis in this paper. From this data set, it was observed that the seismic events generally occurred in advance of the longwall face, both above and below the panel, consistent with failure of the strata in the forward stress abutment zone. Also, the occurrence of the ML 4.2 seismic event within 150-180 m (500-600 ft) of a deep cover longwall face with no associated bump caused a re-evaluation of the nature of the connection between seismic activity and coal bumps.

"INTRODUCTION The Ruhr coal basin is estimated to cover an area of more than 1,000 square miles. Here, the total thickness of the coal bearing formation (Carboniferous) is 10,500 feet, and drilling-hole have revealed 92 coal beds with a total thickness of 262 feet. 6/ Beds pitch from 0 to 90 degrees and about 70 percent of the wartime production came from beds that pitched less than 30 decrees. 5/For example at the Minisiter Stein mine, there are 24 minable coal beds ranging from 80 centimeters. (2 ft., 7 1/2 in.) to 250 centimeters (8 2 1/2 in.). The vertical thickness of the measures is 1,000 meters (3,200 ft.), and at this mine the deposits are covered with 150 meters (500 ft.) of surface wash. The cross section (fig, 1) at Fritz mine; Hoesch, A.G., Essen, Ruhr, is characteristic, The mines have been developed and worked to vertical depths of 2,000 to 2,500 feet by vertical shafts; main-level intervals are 500 to 700 feet apart. Haulage roads are straight, driven in rock, and centered as nearly as practical between property boundaries. Levels are sectionalized by driving crosscuts at right angles to the main haulage road on 800- to 900-foot centers. The roads are the main transportation arteries for the use of trolley or Diesel locomotives. A plan of the sixth main level (fig. 2) at the Bruchstrasse mine; Gelsenkirchener A.G., Bochum, illustrates main-level development and,sectionalizing with crosscuts. The cross section in figure 3 is that of the fourth crosscut west at the same mine."

Coal bumps are influenced by geologic conditions, the geometric design of coal mine excavations, and the sequence and rate of extraction. Researchers from private industry and government agencies around the world have studied mechanisms of violent failure and have identified individual factors that contribute to coal bumps. To develop predictive tools for assessing coal bump potential, the authors initiated a comprehensive study using information from 25 case studies undertaken in U.S. mines. Multiple linear regression and numerical modeling analyses of geological and mining conditions were used to identify the most significant factors contributing to stress bumps in coal mines. Twenty-five factors were considered initially, including mechanical properties of strata, stress fields, face and pillar factors of safety, joint spacings, mining methods, and stress gradients. In situ strength was estimated in 12 coal seams where uniaxial compressive strength exceeded 2,000 psi. Allowances were made for favorable local yielding characteristics of mine roof and floor in reducing damage severity. Pillar and face factors of safety were calculated using displacement-discontinuity methods for specific geometries. This work identified the most important variables contributing to coal bumps. These are (1) mechanical properties of strata, including local yield characteristics of a mine roof and floor, (2) gate pillar factors of safety, (3) roof beam thickness, joint spacing, and stiffness characteristics, which influence released energy,(4) stress gradients associated with the approach of mining to areas of higher stress concentrations, and (5) the mining method. By combining the strength of both analytical and statistical methods, new capabilities were developed for predicting coal bump potential and for building confidence intervals on expected damage.

The increased effectiveness of a two-phase spray system (TPSS) over a single-phase spray system (SPSS) for dust suppression is reported in several laboratory studies. The dust collection efficiencies of SPSS and TPSS were studied in a model experimental longwall gallery facility at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory at NIOSH (USA). The experimental design consisted of two factors: pressure, and airflow. Each factor had three levels. SPSS experiments were conducted at only one pressure (1035 kPa) which is nearly 1.5 times higher than the highest air and water pressure for TPSS experiments. The results of the study are presented in this paper. While it appears that TPSS performed better than SPSS, the data is not sufficiently conclusive on this aspect. The differing spray characteristics of the chosen TPSS and SPSS nozzles did not allow a direct comparison of the two systems. In the TPSS arrangement, considerably greater turbulence in airflow is created around the shearer; it is likely that at least in the immediate vicinity of the tailgate drum, there is a roll back of the dust/mist cloud into the walkway. Therefore, positioning of the personnel upwind of the tailgate drum is necessary to avoid high dust exposures. The rate of decrease in concentration with TPSS is higher than that with SPSS. This may be due to the greater atomization of the water. The test set-up did not allow the study of conditions when coal is cut from tail to head where the potential for personal exposure is high. Changes in the experimental design are necessary to overcome some of the reasons expected for the inconclusive results.

During 1990-2001, a total of 518 fires occurred in all metal/ nonmetal mining categories; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities. Surface operations had the most fires and the highest injury risk rate values. Forty-five fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. In the future, many of these fires and injuries might be prevented or detected and extinguished at their earliest stage by improving current fire safety procedures, adopting existing/ improved fire detection and suppression technologies, and/or developing new technologies. Several strategies for reducing and/or preventing the number of fires and fire injuries follow. I. Increase vigilance, improve safety procedures, and develop new technologies in order to prevent fires and injuries caused by fame cutting and welding operations. 2. Improve equipment hydraulic/fuel/electrical systems inspection programs; adopt fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and electrically powered motors for use in underground mines; develop new technologies (equipment/cab rapid fire detection/ prevention/suppression systems, emergency line drainage systems, and fire barriers); adopt an optimal ground level location for the activation of emergency systems; improve operator's fire preparedness training programs; and develop effective and rapid local firefighting response capabilities. 3. Adopt existing/improved systems for continuous and early detection of combustion gases and smoke along beltlines. 4. Adopt existing/improved technologies for monitoring equipment (beltlines) operational functions. 5. Increase vigilance and adopt improved safety procedures for handling f amenable liquids and refueling fuel in the vicinity of heat sources.

During 1998-99, groundfall incidents resulted in 27 fatalities and were responsible for over 70% of all deaths in U.S. underground coal mines. To obtain a better understanding of where and why these incidents occurred, a comprehensive analysis of ground fall injuries and fatalities was conducted. The first portion of the study examined various factors associated with roof and rib fall injuries and reportable roof fall noninjuries that occurred during 1995-98. The study found that the room-and-pillar mining method has twice the groundfall incident rate than the longwall method. Mine locations with high groundfall rates seem to correlate to regions where there is a higher concentration of problematic coalbeds. For example, the Illinois Basin has very high groundfall rates, which can be traced back to several key coalbeds-Kentucky No. 13, Herrin/No. 6/Kentucky No. 11, and Springfield No. 5/Kentucky No. 9. High rib fall rates were found in mines located in thick seams. Groundfall rates were found to be 30% to 40% higher during the months of July through September, possibly due to high humidity that may cause the shale mine roof to deteriorate. The second part of the study examined the root causes of failure by reviewing all groundfall fatality reports for 1996-99. Primary and secondary hazard factors were assigned to each groundfall incident. The primaryf actors resulting in these groundfall fatalities were pillar extraction, traveling under unsupported roof, skin failure, construction, longwall faces, intersections, and geologic discontinuities. Defining prominent ground control incident trends and hazards will identify areas where additional study is needed and where innovative solutions need to be developed to reduce these severe occupational hazards.
