While it is probable that few people have considered epsonate as a mineral product , it will be noted that it should be so regarded and its production forms an important industry .

The Little Castle Creek chromite deposit was examined in February and May 1941, respectively, by W. O. Vandenburg and O. H. Metzger, engineers of the Bureau of Mines. The Federal Geological Survey started a magnetometer survey of the area in November 1940 and completed its work during April and May 1941. Field work by the Bureau of Mines was conducted during May and June 1941. The purpose of the Bureau of Mines investigation was to search for a continuation of the chromite mineralization. The property at one time was the largest chromite producer in California.

Procedures were developed for reclaiming high-temperature alloy scrap in the form of standard cobalt-base alloy. A cobalt-base, multicomponent, high- temperature alloy, such as S-816, can be successfully melted from scrap, and its specified chemical composition can be retained. Induction furnace melting in a controlled atmosphere was used to obtain ingots that were subsequently fabricated by impact forging to provide specimens for heat treatment and testing. Of the numerous metal elements in S-816 alloy, only small quantities of molybdenum were lost in the melting operation as finally developed. Test results indicated that the scrap material, after melting, forging, and heat treatment, was equivalent in room-temperature tensile strength, in high-temperature creep and stress-rupture properties, and in chemical composition to commercially produced S-816 alloy made from virgin material.

In March 1937 the entire country was shocked by news of an explosion of gas in a New London (Tex.) schoolhouse, which resulted in the death of 280 pupils and 14 t eachers. The Government investigators of this disaster believed that the cause was the ignition and explosion of a large volume of explosive natural gas-air mixture that had accumulated in a poorly ventilated space beneath the first floor of the main school building and that this accumulation was due to leakage from gas lin suspended underneath the floor to carry the gas supply to the school.!i/ For some years there has been a potential explosion hazard in school houses and other buildings that are supplied with water from deep wells in certain parts of Illinois. Notwi thstand.ing the disaster at New London, Tex., and the fact that there had been gas ignitions at four water wells in different parts of the State, the explosion hazard in schools and other buildings was not fully recognized until a few months after the disaster in Texas, when an explosion occurred in the settling basin of the municipal water works of Clinton, Ill., and another in a pump house of the municipal water works in Normal, Ill, The explosion in the settling tank of the municipal water works in Clinton, Ill., occurred on August 12, 1937, and a.id considerable damage to the settling tank, but fortunately no one was injured. At the time of this explosion rapairs'and aJ.terations to the water plant were in progress, and 10 men were employed in the immediate vicinity of the settling tank. Two of these men were enlarging a hole in the concrete side with an air hammer for the installation of a larger discharge line.

Nonoxide ceramic materials could substitute for high-temperature alloy steels containing imported critical and strategic materials such as cobalt, chromium, and nickel if their high-temperature properties can be improved. An important result of this substitution would be a reduction of the Nation&apos;s need for imports of critical and strategic materials. In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the primary objective was to produce high-purity u1trafine (particles <5 ~m equivalent spherical diameter (ESD)) alpha-silicon carbide (a-SiC) powders with improved high-temperature properties using the Bureau&apos;s patented turbo-milling process. A secondary objective was to determine the feasibility of using polymer mill construction materials as a means of eliminating metal contamination from the turbomill. U1trafine a-SiC powders with BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Te11er) surface areas from 30 to 35 m2/g (~0.06 ~m particle ESD) were produced in an all-polymer turbomi11. These high-purity powders (with I-pct Band I-pct C additions) hot-pressed to greater than 99 pct of their optimal density and exhibited properties commensurate with those of commercially available a-SiC. The most promising of the construction materials tested for the major wear surfaces of the turbomi11 was u1trahigh-mo1ecu1ar-weight (UHMW) polyethylene, a polymer thermoplastic.

"INTRODUCTION In September 1943, the Bureau of Mines conducted a limited program of churn drilling on the Winskell property in the Shullsburg area of Lafayette County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation by the Bureau of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when special effort war being made to increase the production of metals necessary for the war program.Drilling described supplemented a previous drilling program conducted by the Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. The results of both programs encouraged subsequent investigation by the Cuba Mining Co. and eventual development of the Andrews mine.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by such project as soon as praticable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Bureau of Mines has improved a mine dust incombustibles analyzer originally developed at the Bartlesville Energy Research Center (BERC). This analyzer provides quick, accurate analysis of the percentage of incombustible material present in dust samples taken from mine ribs, roof, and floor so that costly overdusting may be eliminated while still maintaining a proper level of incombustibles. The changes being effected on the present design of the BERC model IV rock dust analyzer should simplify its operation and calibration procedures, resulting in increased accuracy.

Gold was found in samples collected from Pleistocene and Holocene stream and terrace deposits. Approximately 15,000 cu yd (11,400 cu m) of small and discontinuous terrace and stream gravel deposits in the study area are composed of material derived from sedimentary and granitic rocks. The detritus is subangular to subrounded, and poorly sorted, ranging from boulder to sand size. Gold values in samples collected averaged 8.2 cents per cu yd (gold value of $500 per oz). Pan concentrates and rock chip samples collected from reported mineralized zones showed an absence of economic minerals. Stream placer deposits are uneconomic. No potential was observed for metallic or nonmetallic minerals in the La Panza study area. No potential exists for gas, oil, or coal resources.

As a basis for recommendation and for instruction of bureau engineers the considered opinion of the bureau is expressed in "decisions" of its Mine Safety Board, approved by the Director. Ten of these decisions were discussed, in Information Circular 6091.3 Decision No. 11, approved by Scott Turner, Director, on February 28, 1929, is as follows: "In the interest of safety, the Bureau of Mines, Department of. Commerce, recommends that in coal mines, haulage and (or) hoisting be kept in intake air as far as possible." As in the case of previous mine-safety decisions, the subject matter covered by this decision has frequently come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines through the reports of its mining engineers on explosion disasters and in accident-hazard investigations.

This chapter details the perspective from which collected data have been examined. The first part, intended primarily for lay readers, discusses several topics related to mining as an enterprise. Initially, the organizational functioning of atypical large mine will be described. It is the formal structure above a miner that decides the conditions of his or her work. A second point of concern is the technology itself An underground coal mine is a sociotechnical system, with workers and machines organized in particular ways during production. Third, general conditions and dangers underground will be described in detail. The physical environment of an operation is a powerful factor in the work life of miners. Fourth, a discussion of the process of formal training is given. During this training, a new worker is taught what the organization expects of him or her in the role of safe, productive, coal miner. Next, there are outside organizations that act as significant forces in the workplace. Examples include the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), State agencies, and the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). The roles of these entities will also be examined. The second part of this chapter will depict each study site as a concrete setting, so that findings can be interpreted in their proper context. The Organizational and Technical Nature of Mining A coal mine is a complex system. It is defined as all parts of a mining plant&apos;s property (both underground and surface) that contribute, under one management, to the extraction or handling of coal [American Geological Institute 1997]. As suggested, many functions that must be carried out at an operation are only indirectly related to coal mining and processing. Even the jobs that are di¬rectly related tend to be numerous and varied [Wallwork 1981]. According to Palowitch [1982], the chief reason for this sophistication is that "after more than two centuries of exploiting our coal resources, today&apos;s coal industry finds itself saddled with a horrendous legacy of human impairments and environmental damages which society demands be corrected." Now, the effects of government regulation are evident in every aspect of the mining industry. Any operation, if it is to survive, must be administered with an eye for social efficiency and accountability. Long-range planning is needed to ensure that the mine produces coal in a cost-effective manner. One of the first things that must be considered is location and method of access. To extract coal from an underground mine, a coalbed (or "seam") must be reached from the surface. The term "portal" is generally given to any entrance that provides access to a coal mine. Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed a training module to educate both new, inexperienced miners as well as veterans on important issues related to self-rescue and escape procedures. These include: (1) physical and environmental conditions that can be encountered in a mine after a major explosion, (2) knowledge of emergency meeting locations and escape routes, (3) the importance of using self-rescuers, even in seemingly clear air, to keep the lungs isolated from contaminants, and (4) why miners should not go off to look for others who are missing. In addition, the module may stimulate miners to think about and discuss mine explosions and the devastating effects of such an event.

Track and control the tram maneuvers of continuous mining machines by developing and evaluating a laser sensor system. Background Progressive technology has the potential to greatly improve mine-worker safety, helping to create a safer, better working environment for mine workers by keeping them away from the dangerous face area. To benefit from such technology, the Bureau is investigating remote, computer-assisted operation of mining systems for underground, highwall, and surface mining applications. A cornerstone for computer-assisted operation is an effective guidance system. Since there are no guidance systems on any commercial continuous miners (CM&apos;s), the Bureau it-self developed and tested a laser-based sensor system, based on a commercial sensor called Lasernet. The laser-based guidance system employs four laser scanning sensors at fixed locations in a mine entryway to report the angular coordinates of two cylindrical retro-reflective targets mounted on a CM. Using triangulation, a real-time microcomputer system processes the sensor data and updates the xy position and heading (h) of the CM five times per second. Using a simple control algorithm and communications interface to the CM control computer, the system also controls rotational and translational tram maneuvers.

The drilling and bit-sharpening practice in the southwest Wisconsin zinc district generally conforms to the procedure described herein, except at very small properties, where drill steel is sharpened by hand. Though hot milling of rock-drill bits is practiced in South Africa on some of the large-scale operations, it is seldom seen at American minus in any form. Because of the simplicity and low cost of the equipment, it was thought that a brief description might prove interesting to same of the operators in ether districts who do not have enough steel to sharpen to warrant equipping an elaborate sharpening shop.

The Track Rock corundum mine was among the numerous corundum deposits investigated during the war by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to develop domestic reserves of that critical mineral. In the investigation of this property 562 feet of trenches were excavated and a l25-foot adit was reopened for the purpose of locating veins to of corundum which had been previously reported to occur in that locality. Only very minor amounts of corundum were disclosed in both the surface workings and the adit. The project was begun in May 1943 and completed in November 1943.

The Rare and Precious Metals Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has investigated several cases in which widely divergent amounts of molybdenum were reported by a number of custom laboratories to which quartered portions of the same sample had been sent for analysis . On an oxidized lead ore containing considerable vanadium and a little molybdenum , the amount of the latter reported ranged from 3.14 to 0.24 per cent M003 . The high results were due to the fact that vanadium was estimated with , and reported as , molybdenum . When analyzed by the method described in this paper , 0.15 per cent Moog was found, which is a fair agreement with the lowest figure previously reported . In another and more unusual example , a fine- grained rock containing considerable graphite was submitted for analysis . As a white residue could not be obtained by treating this material with acid , several chemists decomposed the ore by a prolonged fusion with soda ash and nitre and leached the melt with hot water in crder to insure the dissolution of any and all the molybdenum present . After precipitating and filtering the silica from the solution , acetic acid , ammonium acetate , and lead acetate were added to precipitate lead molybdate . The solution contained phosphorous derived from the ore , which precipitated as lead phosphate . The latter was mistaken for , and reported as , molybdenum. As two different chemists used essentially the same procedure , their results , although incorrect , checked . Other chemists using different methods found no molybdenum . From these and other instances it is evident that reputable and conscientious assayers may make serious errors in determining molybdenum, and even duplication of results by different chemists does not necessarily insure against error . The elements most likely to cause trouble are vanadium, tungsten, uranium , arsenic , antimony , titanium, tin , phosphorous , and chromium . The precautions necessary to eliminate these and other impurities vary with the type of ore and the method of analysis . Most texts present methods of limited application and omit or fail to emphasize adequately such precautions . No one method can be given that will best fit every case , but the following procedure has been selected as being the simplest reliable method for such occasional determinations of molybdenum in an ore as are encountered in customs work.

Multiple-charged beams originating from a 300-kv ion accelerator are important tools in the study of metal surfaces and thin films. A knowledge of the particle range is necessary for an understanding of the interaction processes of the ions with the targets. Utilizing a theory developed by Lindhard for determining the range of low-energy ions in solids, the ranges of H, He, C, N, 0, and Ar ions in A1203, Al, Fe203, Fe304, CuO, Cu20, Fe, Cu, Sn, and W were calculated for the energy range 60 to 400 kev using a computer program written in BASIC. The range, presented in graphical form, is given in both µg/cm2 and angstroms. In addition, heavy ion ranges were calculated for comparison with published experimental values. For ions with Z > 5, the discrepancy between the calculated values and published experimental values generally ranged from 2 to 40 percent; the largest deviations were probably due to experimental error.

This paper describing the method of mining a deposit of vanadium ore near Rifle, Colo., is one of a series of similar papers on metal-mining methods and costs being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines. This vanadium deposit probably is the largest yet found in North America. It is situated 12 miles northeast of Rifle, Colo. (see fig. 1), on the southern flank of tae White River plateau, and is at an altitude of 6,500 feet. Between 150 and 200 tons of ore are mined daily and trucked to the mill at Rifle. The product of the mill is fined vanadium oxide, which is shipped to the company&apos;s plaits at Columbiana, Ohio, and Niagara Falls, N. Y., for the electric manufacture of ferrovanadium. HISTORY The deposit was discovered about 1909 by men prospecting for carnotite. Its outcrop on the bola cliff of Rifle Canon had been known to stockmen for many years.

Near-optimum parameters were determined by the Bureau of Mines for vapor deposition of rhenium on heated copper substrates by hydrogen reduction of rhenium hexafluoride (ReF6). High-purity deposits of nearly 90-percent theo¬retical density were obtained with the reaction chamber at 250° C, with an H2 to ReF6 volume ratio of 25 to 1, and with an ReF6 flow rate of 5 grams per hour. Some rhenium deposited as a loose, black powder. When the established near-optimum parameters were carefully followed, this could be minimized but never completely avoided. Varying the reaction chamber pressure, both above and below atmospheric, yielded excessive quantities of rhenium powder. Deposition efficiencies, based on only the coherent metal, ranged between 70 and 75 percent. Massive deposits contained only spectrographic traces of impurities. The average microhardness (Knoop, 100-gram load) of vapor-deposited rhenium was 907. Limited research on the deposition of rhenium-tungsten alloys by reduction of the mixed hexafluorides produced deposits in which linear composition gradients were pronounced; this nonhomogeneity was attributed to the wide variation in optimum hydrogen-reduction temperatures of the two hexafluorides (250° C for ReF6 and 550° C for WF6). Using deposition temperatures between 250° and 550° C did not eliminate the composition variations.
