This Bureau of Mines report outlines the atomic absorption analysis of oilfield brines for barium, calcium, copper, iron, lead lithium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, strontium, and zinc, using the method of additions. The advantages of using atomic absorption are discussed. The method of additions was chosen to overcome large matrix interferences usually found in brines; techniques of overcoming chemical, ionization, and background interferences are also described. The method was used to analyze several hundred oilfield brines and found to be rapid and reasonably accurate. A solvent extraction method was used to concentrate lead, copper, zinc, and iron in low-level samples.

The Bureau of Mines investigated two alternative methods for treating a zirconium-bearing chloride-sulfate strip liquor to obtain reactor-grade Zr02. One method involves neutralization with NH3 and the other hydrothermal precipitation. The strip liquor was derived from zircon sand by a Bureau of Mines method for separating zirconium and hafnium via solvent extraction with a tertiary amine. Neutralization with NH3 to precipitate hydrous zirconium oxide required 0.9 to 1.1 g NH3 per gram of zirconium. The NH3 can be recovered for recycle. Zr02 that met reactor-grade specifications was produced by precipitation with NH3? Hydrothermal precipitation of Zr02 from strip liquor required that the solution be maintained at 2600 C and 680 psi for 10 min and in a non-corrodible pressure vessel. In bench-scale experiments both methods gave-zirconium recoveries greater than 99 pct.

The Pittsburgh Mine Map Repository of the Bureau of Mines serves as a basic reference file for the archival preservation of mine map data of mines east of the Mississippi River. About 22,000 of an estimated 500,000 available mine maps have been microfilmed A computerized index serves as the mechanism for retrieval of any microfilmed mine map. The operation, equipment, and index are described in the report.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions which is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries . This interpretation of the laws of El Salvador has been prepared from the best available information in Washington , but is released subject to correction and amplification , if necessary , by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State . Under the terms of the Code of Commerce ( arts . 12ff . ) , foreigners living in El Salvador can engage in business on the same terms as nationals . This involves ( = $434.00 ) - except for those with a working capital , of less than a thousand pesos inscription in the merchants ' register , which can be refused only in case of manifest disability of a permanent nature .

The object of the research described in this paper was to investigate the effect of metallurgical and surface treatments on the corrosion behavior of arc-melted reactor-grade zirconium in cupric or ferric chloride solutions. An apparatus was constructed and specimens of various metallurgical conditions and surface treatments were tested for 6 days at 35° C., with aeration. Some correlations were observed between corrosion rate and the metal's condition and treatment, Specifically, the unattacked or least attacked specimens were those that had been etched as a final treatment before testing. The most severely attacked specimens were those that had been vacuum-annealed as a final treatment before testing. The moderately attacked specimens were those neither vacuum-annealed nor etched, but having a final surface treatment which left a cold-worked surface. Attack by cupric and ferric chloride was by pit- ting with no preference for grain boundaries, The corrosion scale was cow posed predominately of very fine zirconim particles, Particles from the FeC1,-corroded specimens were more pyrophoric than those from CuCl2-corroded specimens, and appeared to have a higher surface area to volume ratio. Comparison of results to those of previous investigators showed that at certain salt concentrations the more pure, reactor-grade zirconium was quite resistant to attack while the less pure, graphite-melted zirconium was severely attacked.

In overview, the world's mineral industry in 1989 registered gains over its 1988 performance, but these gains were by no means as pronounced as had been those of 1988. The traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption levels, reflected significant growth in most industry sectors from crude material extraction through the gamut of down- stream processing. Growth in market economy countries generally exceeded growth in the centrally planned economy countries as a result of a variety of causes that will be covered subsequently, but even among the centrally planned countries there were some upturns. In contrast to these measures of the soundness of the industry, the situation for nonfuel mineral and metal prices was less satisfactory than in 1988, and low crude oil prices continued as a problem for the all-important petroleum sector, despite some gains during the year. The oil price situation mitigated against price increases for competitive fuels. Although this was unfavorable for fuel producers, it remained advantageous to consumers, including nonfuel mineral producers, processors, and transporters. Thus it cannot be viewed as a negative factor for the whole of the global mineral industry. Global crude mineral output value was estimated at nearly $1,420 billion in current dollars, an increase of 9% over the 1988 level, and an increase in current dollar terms for the seventh consecutive year. Measured in terms of constant dollars, however, adjusting for inflation, the increase was only 4.7% compared with the 1988 level. Despite the prolonged growth trend, the 1989 crude mineral output value level was still 3.2% below the record high set in 1980, which was $1,467 billion in terms of 1989 dollars.

"The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural as through high-pressure pipe lines. 4 This report deals with that part of the study involving the design of pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling lire may or may not extend the entire length &f the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line.As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance, from the developed as fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural-gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. It is believed that to a large extent future expansion in the natural—gas industry will consist of paralleling the present lines. The several formulas given in this report have been developed to aid in the design of such systems. Curves and tables were prepared from these formulas to simplify the calculations materially and to facilitate determination of the sizes of pine to be used in paralleling various diameter lines to give the most economical design. The formulas are presented without detailed derivations, as a complete report on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines is being prepared which will contain the derivations of these formulas. Examples included here show the detail of application of the several formulas to problems of design of parallel lines."

Following the severe starch-dust explosion in the casting department of a large candy factory nearly 2 years ago, great interest has been shown in the explosive properties and the safe manufacture and handling of powdered starches. Under the auspices of the National Fire Protection Association, a committee has been formed to prepare a code aimed at preventing dust explosions in the confectionery industry. One objective of this code will be to reduce the explosion hazards of starches that are widely used for molding, dusting, and other candy-manufacturing processes. The explosibilities of starches and starch mixtures have been studied in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines and elsewhere. The results of the initial experiments made by the Bureau on 10 samples of cornstarch and mixtures of cornstarch with other materials have been published. In response to numerous requests for additional information, further laboratory studies have been conducted. Data have been obtained on the effects of dust concentration, particle size, moisture content, admixture of .calcium carbonate, and on the effect of oil treatment on the explosibility of cornstarch. The results of this investigation are summarized in this report.

Lower the respirable dust expo-sure of longwall mine workers by reducing the amount of air-borne respirable dust generated during coal extraction. Approach Increase the moisture content of the coal seam through water infusion before the coal is mined. How Water Infusion Works Increasing the moisture content in coal tends to prevent respirable dust from becoming air-borne during mining and transport. The moisture content of the coal seam can be increased by infusing water into the seam. Water under pressure is forced into the cracks (cleats) of the coal seam through sealed bore-holes. The effectiveness of water infusion is a function of the amount of water the coal seam accepts (its infusibility), which depends on the cleat density (cleat spacing) and cleat size (crack diameter). Thus the effect of water infusion on dust control depends mainly on coal seam characteristics. Water infusion techniques are generally used to restrict the flow of methane gas to the working face; however, the technique provides an alternative dust control method in mines with severe dust problems which limit production.

"The author was a member of a Commission sent by the Secretary of the Interior to France to investigate developments in mining and metallurgy under stress of war conditions, and also to observe the extent and character of the destruction of the collieries and the steel and iron plants, and methods which were being taken to reestablish them. This commission consisted of F. G. Cottrell, Chief Metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, Frank H. Probert, Dean of the University of California Mining School, and George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau. While conducting this investigation a trip was made to the Saar Basin to observe the conditions there. Following this Mr. Rice acted as advisor on mining matters to the Representative of the Economic Council in an Interallied conference held at Cologne in April 1919, and subsequently visited the mining districts in central and southern France, Belgium, and Great Britain.The Germans, in planning a campaign for world supremacy, had as one of their first objectives the seizing of the important Briey iron ore deposits of France and the coal fields of Belgium and northern France.Large resources of coal and iron have led to the commercial greatness of the countries possessing them, as exemplified by the great development first in England then in the United States, and in Germany when the minette high phosphorus iron ores became useful through the invention of the Thomas and Gilchrist dephosphorizing process in 1878. However, this development was anticipated by the German scientific advisors in 1871, and led to the then known deposit of minette ore in Lorraine being taken from France by Germany.When these ores became available, Germany made such tremendous strides that its minette ore developments were not sufficient and importation of ore was necessary. Meantime France, by drilling, had established the extension of the minette ore field into French Lorraine. Then it was discovered that France had greater resources, while the German resources were being rapidly depleted.Although Germany, in its Westphalian basin, possessed the most important coal field on the Continent, containing the largest resources in coking coal outside of Great Britain, its coal was distant from the sea coast, so it could not be an important factor in the export business. No doubt this fact caused the German Imperialists to look forward: to securing the coal basin of Belgium and northern France for future ocean trade.It was a striking feature in the German conduct of the war that, although the steel and iron plants of Belgium and France and other industrial establishments in the invaded regions of Belgium and France were utterly destroyed, the iron mines in French Lorraine were not destroyed nor materially damaged by the Germans in their retreat, while the destruction in France continued until the day of the Armistice. The other striking fact is that the coal mines Of Belgium were not destroyed. It can only be conjectured whether this was due to President Wilson's threat of retribution, which did not stay their hand in France, or was due to the fact that they did not consider Belgium as a real competitor. It was evident they wished to cripple France industrially when they could not hold these northern provinces."

The principal deposits of carnotite, so far as now known, are con- fined to a well-defined area lying in the southwestern part of Colo- rado and the southeastern part of Utah (see Pl. I). Approxi- mately, this area is bounded as follows: On the east by a line ex- tending from a few miles east of the southwest corner of the State of Colorado, to a point about 6 miles west of Naturita, thence di- rectly north to the San Miguel River, thence along the course of this river and the Dolores River to Mesa Creek, thence toward the head- waters of Mesa, Blue, and Calamity Creeks on the south side of the Uncompahgre Mountains; on the north by a line extending from the last-named point westerly to the San Rafael Swell near Green River, Utah; on the west by a line extending from San Rafael Swell to the Henry Mountains, and on the south by a line extending from the Henry Mountains toward the southeast corner of the State of Utah. This area includes the main districts wherein carnotite has been found, claims have been located, and the ore produced. There are of course, extensive tracts within this area which do not contain carnotite in paying quantities. In places the carnotite beds have been entirely eroded or are not present, or lie so deep that mining is not practicable. The main deposits of carnotite within the area lie in different districts which in Colorado are as follows: Summit and Bush Canyons in Dolores and San Miguel Counties; McIntyre, Gypsum Valley, and Bull Canyon districts; the Paradox Valley, La Sal Creek, Roc Creek, Long Park, Hieroglyphic, Saucer Basin, and Hydraulic districts in Montrose County; Mesa, Blue, and Calamity Canyon districts and the Gateway area in Mesa County. The included dis- tricts in Utah are as follows: The Green River and San Rafael Swell district in Garfield County; the Thompson deposits in Grand County; the Dry Valley, Yellow Wash, and Lisbon Valley districts in San Juan County; the district around the Henry Mountains in Garfield County; and the deposits recently reported in Montezuma Canyon (south of Monticello) in San Juan County. Outside of the area described there are scattered deposits north of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad at Coal Creek, near Meeker, Rio Blanco County; along Skull Creek and Red Wash, near Rangely, Routt County; on Horse Mountain, near Eagle, Eagle County, and in South Park, near Garos, in Park County, Colo. The claims leased from the Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co. by the National Radium Institute are situated on the north side of East Paradox Valley, in the Long Park and Hydraulic districts. The National Radium Institute has mined no ore except from its leased claims in the Long Park district. For information regarding the general geology of the region, the probable origin of the ores, and descriptions of other carnotite deposits, the reader is referred to the literature on these subjects. The carnotite of the area described is deposited in a light-colored, cross-bedded sandstone that lies almost horizontal between the La Plata formation below and the Dakota sandstone (conglomerate) above, and is included in the McElmo formation, which is of Jurassic age. Underlying the white sandstone of the La Plata is the Dolores formation, or "Red Beds," which is plainly visible along and just below the rim rocks of the steep canyon walls in many of the carnotite districts. Along such canyons the ore crops out at different places, so that prospecting is comparatively easy. For ore on the benches and on the mesa prospecting is more difficult, especially where the ore lies at some depth and no surface indications are visible. The carnotite deposits are flat, lenticular, and irregular, varying greatly in extent and thickness. The carnotite itself forms incrustations on exposures of the white sandstone, in joints and fractures of the rock, and is deposited around and between individual sand grains, replacing the original cement. The Utah and Colorado carnotite is amorphous, and to the naked eye appears as a very fine yellow pow- der. It is often granular, and as a rule can be readily separated from the individual sand grains.

"The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."

This report describes aperiments by the Bureau of Mines and reviews theoretical aspects of the use of organophosphate solvent extraction for recovering beryllium from sulfate leach liquors. The leach liquors were prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of lime-sintered low-tenor beryl flotation concentrates. The experimental work on sulfate leach liquors showed that the acidic esters of organophosphates extracted beryllium slowly but in preference to aluminum. Three common alkylphosphoric acids, di- (2-ethylhexyl) (EHPA), heptadecyl (HDPA), and dodecyl (DDPA), in order of decrmsing selectivity, yielded a partial separation of beryllium from aluminum.

This paper, describing the operations of the Louisville Cement Co. in quarrying limestone for the manufacture of quicklime, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on stone quarries throughout the United States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Although some engineering colleges recognize the importance of instructing young engineers in industrial safety , the different institutions handle this instruction in various ways . It is believed that a recent industrial safety course , conducted at the Colorado School of Mines through the cooperation of this school and the Bureau of Mines , U. S. Department of Commerce , presents some unusual features that are of interest to other schools and to the mining public .

Reduce the costs associated with conventional treatment of acid mine water. Approach Conventional treatment of acid mine drainage consists of plants requiring large mixing and aeration tanks, mechanical aerators and large, shallow settling ponds. Such plants are usually very costly to construct, maintain and operate. The Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, low-maintenance, highly efficient system to treat acid mine drainage which mixes, aerates, and neutralizes mine water Simultaneously in the existing discharge pipeline by using the pressure generated by the deep mine discharge pumps. The mixing and aeration action of the in-line system significantly increases oxidation rates of ferrous iron. Iron and manganese are removed, even at near neutral pH levels, due to the high efficiency of this system. How It Works The In-line Aeration and Treatment System (ILS) consists of two commercially available components, a jet pump (ejector) and a static mixer. The jet pump is simply a nozzle that converts water, already under pressure, into a high-velocity stream that entrains air by Venturi action. If neutralization is required, sodium hydroxide or lime is added along with the air at the Venturi opening. The aerated and neutralized water then enters the static mixer, which is a length of internally spiralled pipe that mixes air and water together. The two components, which are both about 8 feet in length, replace the last section of discharge pipe at a point before the mine water is emptied into a pond. Along with the settling pond, these components treat the water so that it meets discharge criteria. The system has been used at surface drainage treatment facilities as well, but in such use a pump is required to provide the necessary pressure drop across the Venturi opening.

A large number of operators of various industries in the United States do not appear to realize the great returns in dollars and cents which result from intelligently directed safety work . Managers of co 1 mines , metal mines , open-pit mines , quarries , steel mills , cement mills , oil rei meries , iron works , or other industrial operations , should by all means realize the great waste resulting from accidents , in order to appreciate the necessity for a continuous accident -prevention policy . While the prevention of accidents is worth while from the humanitarian standpoint alone , it has an equally important economic side , and before our mining industrial operations will be made as safe as they should be , it is apparent that this dollars and cents viewpoint must be given full recognition in order to bring before many of the men who run the industries the great importance of this phase of industrial management . : There is a tendency upon the part of the opera or who has not given thought to the cost of accidents ( and there are many mining operators of this type) to insure his company against compensation losses and against catastrophes for which he can secure insurance , and think he has done his duty ar an executive . Even though industrial operations were not compelled to pay compensation , and even if the management were not moved by humanitarian motives to try to stop accidents , it would pay many times over to carry on accident prevention work vigorously and continuously. : In some parts of the United States , the state compensation and insurance requirements are such that the operator does not receive a reduction in his insurance rate per men employed upon having made safety installations or upon having achieved a reduction of accidents in his plant . Under such conditions the management frequently does not feel encouraged to emert much effort in bettering the accident rate . However , when the responsible officials of a company realize the much greater harm to an operation which results from doing no accident - prevention work , and the great benefit in reduced costs which usually follows effective safety work , they should be inclined to do almost everything possible to reduce accidents , regardless of considerations as to accident compensations . There are enough indirect costs resulting from accidents to wreck many types of business ; excessive accidents result in disorganization and failure , while immunity from accidents usually means a smoothly running efficient organization .

"Coal washing commands the thoughtful attention of a steadily incre in number of people. Clean coal is not merely a luxury but is rapidly becoming a necessity in some industrial operations.Coal seams in the Northeast are rarely free from ""bone"" and shale or clay partings which vary from a fraction of an inch to several feet in thickness. Nearly all of the coal measures are folded and faulted, the coal seams dip at various angles, and in some cases are badly broken. In mining these seams fragments of the roof and floor, as well as partings of impur-ities within the seams, unavoidably become mixed with the coal, so that the raw coal as it comes to the surface often contains as much as 50 per cent, by weight of waste.At the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Seattle, the washing of this coal in order to improve it for commercial use has been studied. Since the process of coal-washing depends upon differences in specific gravity between the clean coal and, its associated impurities, the first problem undertaken was that of determining the specific gravity of the clean coal and of each parting of impurity contained in a large number of representative seams.It was found that the freshly-mined coal is practically saturated with water, this being observed in determining the effect of moisture content upon the specific gravity of the coal particles, selected from samples of coal varying from low-grade subbituminous up to semianthracite, all of which are found in the State of Washington. The specific gravity values determined for the cleanest particles varied from 1.28 to 1.35; in general, the higher the rank of the coal the hither the specific gravity."

The increased use of tunnel boring machines (TBM) has stimulated laboratory research to optimize the cutting parameters of these machines with the objective of increasing machine efficiency and penetration rate. Laboratory-scale rock cutting experiments have succeeded in identifying many of the important parameters involved in rock-cutter interaction. Although scaling factors may be required to apply the results directly, the concepts developed can be used qualitatively as design guidelines for boring machines. The Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Mining Research Center has recently developed a large-scale rock cutting device (RCD) that will simulate many of the operating parameters of the tunnel boring machines in the laboratory under a controlled environment. The results of the experiments with this device will be directly applicable to the design of TBM's.

A study of certain gas making and fuel problems peculiar to the gas industry of California has been made by the Bureau of Mines. The work was done at the request of, and in cooperation with The California Gas Research Council 2, for the purpose of obtaining basic information on the gas-making fuels available to California, and their applicability to the present and future needs of the gas industry in that State. The data obtained have been applied in outlining a construction program, and indicate the possibilities in efficiently utilizing fuels in making gas by other than the oil-gas process. This paper presents an outline of the study and a summary of the principal results obtained, with some of the more important conclusions and recommendations based on this data. Gas is produced in California by processes which are both unique and different from those common to other parts of the United States. The bulk of the manufactured gas is made in and distributed from two main districts which are centers of population - namely, the Los Angeles district and the San Francisco Bay district. The gas manufactured in the Bay district is, almost exclusively oil-gas, whereas that produced in the southern part of the State, where natural gas is available, is mostly mixed natural gas and reformed-gas, but oil-gas is the chief product when the supply of natural gas is inadequate. Practically all of the gas companies are equipped with oil-gas generating apparatus, and anticipate using it in the future. As the continued use of the oil-gas process to the exclusion of all other processes, depends upon a continued supply of oil at a low cost, and the prospect of obtaining such low-priced oil in the future is somewhat uncertain, the questions have arisen: What will the future gas-making process or processes be? When will it be necessary to make plans for the installation of different gas generating equipment, and what will that equipment comprise?
