The failure of the immediate roof or "roof skin" between installed primary and secundary roof supports causes hundreds of injuries and, on average one or two fatalities each year in U.S. underground coal mines. Conventional roof supports cannot cover enough roof area to adequately control these relatively small, but very dangerous rock falls. The 2006 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident database lists a total of 542 ground fall injuries, including 10 fatalities. An analysis of the database suggests that 434 of the injuries and three of the fatali­ties can be attributed to roof skin falls (See Figure 2). The key to controlling falls of the immediate roof or roof skin is maximizing the area of roof coverage ilnd confining these relatively small loose rocks. Roof screen offers maximum coverage of the immediate roof. Depending on the size and configuration of the screen panels, coverage of up to 100% of the roof area is possi­ble. Screen also offers a first line of defense for machine operators working in the face area by confining or deflecting small rocks that can come loose during mining or roof bolt installation. Figure 1 shows an example of the protection screen provides dur­ing bolt installation. Although the benefits of screen are well-known, mining com­panies in some areas of the U.S., mainly Northern Appalachia and the Illinois basin, are not convinced that roof screen is the best tool for dealing with roof skin control issues. The logistics of material handling, possible ergonomic injuries to workers, and the costs associated with installation are delaying the acceptance of screen as an on-cycle roof support tool. Other mines however, have concluded that installing roof screen can be cost-effective when compared to the cost of lost time accidents, training of replacement workers, or returning to already developed entries for the cleaning and rebolting process.

A pure scandium solution was concentrated from 10-4 mole per liter to 0.5 mole per liter by continuous foam fractionation in a spaced, packed column. Recovery in the foam was 77 percent using a spaced, packed draining column with sodium n-methyl-n-"coconut oil acid" taurate as the surfactant. The technique was first studied batchwise in a small unpacked column to determine the more important variables. Optimum surfactant concentration was found to depend on scandium concentration. Extraction and, in general, enrichment ratios were highest in the 2.5 to 3.5 pH range at temperatures ranging from 50° to 70° C. An airflow rate of 136 ml./min. was satisfactory in the equipment used.

In investigating general problems that relate to the fuel resources of this country, and in testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government, the Bureau of Mines has given considerable attention to the efficiency and economic value of producer-gas power plants. Government inquiries during the past eight years not only have shown a very low fuel consumption per horsepower-hour for these plants but have demonstrated conclusively the possibility of utilizing commer- cially low grades of bituminous coal, lignite, and peat in plants prop- erly designed for the use of these fuels. The anthracite plant has been recognized as a commercial possibility for several years, although the cost of the fuel used has in general restricted these plants to com- paratively small units. The commercial development of the producer-gas power plant in the United States has been largely within the past six or eight years. In 1909 the United States Geological Survey published in a bulletin entitled "Recent Development of the Producer-Gas Power Plant in the United States" a list of producer-gas power-plant installations. The data presented in that bulletin showed a strong development in this field and led to much conjecture as to the future of this type of power. Owing to the extensive introduction of the steam turbine, however, many persons predicted the almost immediate doom of the producer-gas plant. In addition to the inroads made by this formida- ble rival, the interest of the gas-engine enthusiasts became centered to such an extent in the oil engine that the gas producer was relegated to second place by many and absolutely abandoned by some. During the past three years the belief of many who were formerly firm be- lievers in the gas producer has been that this type of power has reached its height of development in this country and that from a commercial standpoint it can no longer be regarded as a complete success. Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted at three sites in Wyoming in an attempt to detect underground rubble zones in oil shale and to determine their size and resistivity contrast. The zones were detected at Rock Springs sites 4 and 5, but none were detected at Green River site 1. The resistivity of the rubble zones at sites 4 and 5 is greater than that of the surrounding rock. The zones at sites 4 and 5 are concluded to be roughly ovaloid in shape, with a horizontal diameter of 33 m and a vertical thickness of 24 m. Both rubble zones and the blasting that created them are considered to be centered at a depth of 24 m.

Heats of formation were obtained for four anhydrous crystalline sodium borates by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry. The heats of formation at 298.15° K from the elements are NAB02, -233.2 ±0.6 kcal/mole; Na2B07, -786.4 ±1.0 kcal/mole; NaB305, -549.9 ±0.8 kcal/mole; and Na2B6013, -1,412.5 ±2.0 kcal/mole, The heats of formation from the constituent oxides are NaB02, -31.5 ±0.8 kcal/mole; Na2B407, -78.8 ±1.3 kcal/mole; NaB305, -44.1 ±0.8 kcal/mole; and Na2B8013, -96.7 ±1.5 kcal/mole.

This report presents the results of a research and development program in recovering waste-rolling oils conducted by the Bethlehem Steel Co., before 1954 at its Sparrows Point plant, Sparrow Point, Md., with the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, College Park, Md. The objective of the program was twofold: First, to recover oil for reuse in the plant; and second, to stop pollution, by oil, of the stream and harbor areas in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The sequence of the investigations was laboratory and pilot plant studies on sedimentation, simple aeration, and flotation for the separation of oil and water; and construction of a production unit using standard flotation equipment. This work was only preliminary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and it has continued research on this problem. Recent progress indicates that new, improved processes will soon replace the flotation units described in this report. The first efforts to separate oil and water by simple sedimentation were unsuccessful. To establish the cause of this failure, microscope examinations and measurements were made on cold-reduction rolling mill cooling-water effluents containing oil in suspension. It was discovered that an average oil globule, held in suspension, was only 0.001 inch in diameter and would not coagulate with other globules for normal sedimentation at room temperature. The next step in the sequence of studies was to coagulate the oil suspension by simple aeration with air under slight pressure. The aeration methods studied were effective in removing up to 68 percent of the total oil but were approaching flotation in principle. The final investigation of the series was flotation of the oil in conventional laboratory-size flotation cells. The small-bubble method, without reagents, floated up to 89 percent of the total oil held in suspension and was the process selected for pilot-plant development.

This report describes the results of a Bureau of Mines investigation in which the stress concentrations and distributions caused by inclusions in a strained elastic plate were determined, Finite element analyses were made for 168 models containing single inclusions of elliptical, ovaloidal, and rectangular shape. The variables studied included: horizontal-to-vertical loading ratios, (Sh/Sv) of 0,0.33,0.5, and 1.0; width-to-height ratios (w/h), of 0.25, 0.5, 2, and 4; and Young's modulus of inclusion to Young?s modulus of plate ratios (K ratios) of 0.33, 0.5, 2.0, and 5.0. The results show that the theory for elliptical inclusions can accurately predict the average stress along the x and y axes of symmetry for circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular inclusions from the width-to-height and K ratios. The actual inclusion shape was insignificant, suggesting that the average stresses in other inclusions of irregular shape (orebodies) can be estimated with the theory for an elliptical inclusion. An application of this technique to mining problems is presented. The stresses in the elliptical inclusions were uniform throughout the inclusion for all the models studied.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies related to SO2 air pollution to determine attritioning rates, SO2 sorption rates, and sulfur loads that could be obtained on commercial alkalized alumina sorbent pellets. Fluidized-bed attritioning rates ranged from 0.025 pct/hr for alkalized alumina with a crushing strength of 4 kg to 0.075 pct/hr for 0.5 kg crushing strength mate¬rial. Airlift attritioning rates ranged from 0.50 pct/hr for 3 kg crushing strength alkalized alumina to about 3 pct/hr for 0.5 kg material. Attritioning rates for the commercial alkalized alumina were comparable to those obtained for sorbent pellets prepared in the Bureau of Mines laboratory. Sorption rates were related to S02 concentration in flue gas, temperature, and presence of nitrogen oxides in the gas stream. Sorption rates at 300° C were 0.35 X 10-6 gS/gp/sec (grams sulfur per gram pellet per second) in 0.045 pct so, gas, 5.1 x 10-5 gS/gp/sec in 0.34 pct SO2 gas, and 65 X 10-5 gS/gp/sec in 10 pct SO2 gas. For the 0.34 pct S02 gas, sulfur loads of 0.10 gS/gp (the projected load for regeneration) were obtained in 47 min at 130° C and in 116 min at 300° C. The presence of either NO or NO2 in the 0.34 pet S02 gas increased the SO2 sorption rates 2 to 3 times at 300° C, but had no effect at 130° C.

The diamond-drill method was tried at the site selected for driving a 5- by 6 -foot air shaft at the east end of the Bellefonte mine . This method of sinking consisted , first , of drilling a 5-3/4 -inch-diameter cut hole from the surface , then drilling parallel 1.5 - inch ( EX ) holes around it at appropriate distances for a balanced blasting round . The cut hole was not charged with explosive but served as a relief chamber for the incipient expansion of the ground broken by. blasting the surrounding 1.5 - inch holes . The length of each hole was 236 feet , which was the finished depth of the shaft . The nature of the work in the air shaft was largely experimental , and many difficulties arising from the lack of special equipment and proper technique for precise alinement of the drill holes caused expensive delays before they could be overcome . Drilling the 5-3 /4 - inch hole , which was impeded by frequent core blocks in the core barrel , required 10 shifts . average advance per shift for an EX hole was about 150 feet . The The holes were charged and fired from the surface . The length of the section blasted in one cycle was 10 feet . Blasting progressed from the bottom of the shaft upward . The broken stone dropped into a chute , from which it was drawn into cars on the haulage level . The Bellefonte mine is an underground limestone mine.3/ The primary objective in undertaking the research on shaft sinking by diamond drilling was to perfect a method for driving connections between levels of the mine .

The Bureau of Mines has developed structural design data for unreinforced concrete tunnel linings in the form of stress and deflection coefficients from which bending, axial, shear, and boundary stresses, moments, thrusts, and shear forces, and structural deflections can be determined at any point on the lining. Results were obtained by structural analyses of nine concrete-lined tunnel configurations subjected to 22 biaxial load conditions. The tunnel configurations include three basic shapes, circular, rectangular, and horse-shoe, with dimensions based on designs evolved by the mining industry. These analyses were made by the direct stiffness matrix method, a computer-oriented procedure. Numerical results agree closely with those obtained experimentally.

Provide a lighter, smaller apparatus for more gently supporting electrical cable as it is raised or lowered in a well as compared with the conventional method of using a winch and pulley. Approach The conventional method of running cable into a well is to use a winch to pull the cable over a pulley located at the end of a boom placed over the well. This has the disadvantages of being bulky and of placing a concentrated strain on the cable at the point where it moves over the pulley. These disadvantages are overcome by using a "Chinese finger" cable grip assembly to hold and release a multiple conductor cable.

The object of this paper is fourfold: (1) To sketch as briefly and non- technically as possible the principles underlying the operation of several elec- trical geophysical methods of prospecting applicable to the finding of small, buried metallic objects; (2) to point out the possibilities and limitations of these methods; (3) to present, whenever possible, data showing actual results obtained from their use; and (4) to enumerate and describe methods that lack scientific background or foundation.

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and small-scale continuous tests on samples of silt from the Nolichucky Reservoir near Greeneville, Tenn., to develop a process for the recovery of commercial-grade muscovite concentrates. Using a combination of Humphreys spirals for preconcentration followed by cationic flotation, 94.5 percent of the muscovite was recovered in a product containing 96.5 percent muscovite.

A study of the flotation characteristics of columbium-tantalum minerals was made by contact-angle and microflotation methods, and the findings were confirmed by flotation of two natural ores. In the contact-angle study conditions for collection of columbite, pyrochlore, and tantalite were determined for (1) sodium oleate with a sulfonate; (2) sodium isooctyl phosphate; (3) a short-chain primary amine; (4) a long-chain primary amine; and (5) a quaternary amine. These conditions were confirmed in microflotation tests. Information about collector action on common gangue minerals was also obtained by these two methods. In batch flotation tests on a pyrochlore ore and a columbite ore, it was demonstrated that collectors selected on the basis of contact-angle and micro-flotation studies would float columbium minerals from a complex natural ore. However, multiple cleaner and scavenger flotation steps will be necessary to produce commercial concentrates. From a pyrochlore ore containing 0.54 percent Cb2O5, a 44.4 percent Cb2O5 concentrate was made containing 36.4 percent of the total Cb2O5. For a columbite are the corresponding values were: 4.35, 54.6, and 67.1 percent. During the batch flotation study, wetting agents were found to aid in the gangue-ore mineral separations.

Problems of design involving the high-temperature characteristics of materials of construction have focused attention on tungsten, the metal with the highest melting point. To study the properties of this metal a method was needed to produce tungsten of high purity easily and consistently. The Bureau of Mines has made tungsten metal in massive form on a laboratory scale by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride (WF6). Metal made in this manner had a purity of 99.99 percent or better, with reference to all detectable impurities, including gases. The process tolerated a wide variation in operating conditions, and the results with respect to total impurities as low as 0.01 percent were reproducible.

During the summer of 1943 the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling on the McIlhon and adjoining Pearson land in the Mineral Point district of Iowa County, Wis. Sixteen holes, aggregating 1,570 feet .of bore, were completed. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-and lead-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when great effort was being made to increase the production of Metals important to the war program. The Bureau's drilling program supplemented a previous drilling pro-gram conducted by the Vinegar Hill Zinc Co., and demonstrated the presence of a strongly mineralized zone at relatively shallow depths.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this winter (1928-29) is slightly more volatile than that gold a year ago. This characteristic is shown by a slight lowering of the distillation temperatures, particularly at the average initial and 20 per cent boiling points. Daring the past mine and a half years the Bureau of Mines has made semi annual surreys of the gasoline marketed in the United States; the Survey just completed is the nineteenth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples have been collected were chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it was obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

The group of gems included under the general name "feldspar" occupies only a minor place in jewelry. Feldspars, with the possible exception of quartz, are the most important of rock-forming minerals, but most occurrences are of quite ordinary varieties, without striking color and unattractive. Few specimens are suitable for use as gem stones, but occasional crystals that exhibit unusual brilliance or play of color are cut into various shapes for personal adornment or for architectural decoration. The best known of the feldspar gems, and probably the most important in point of production, is the moonstone. Amazon stones, labradorite, sunstone, and a number of less common varieties have been produced in various parts of the world.
