It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology that results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoidsJ have been implicated as important biochemical mediator5 of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dust could influence the production of proinflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Primary cultures of rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500 and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE;V, thromboxane Ai (T}(Ay, and leukotriene 84 (LTB; levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 production was markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE1 production. Exposure of AM to freshly fractured coal dust resulted in a significant increase in production by AM, while exposure to stale coal dust did not influence AM TXA1 production. Neither "fresh" nor "stale" coal dust had any effect on LTB4 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in TXA1 PGE.,, TXA; and LTB4 production compared with control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 11oo•c resulted in eicosanoid levels that were not significantly different from control. These effects were still apparent 8 wk after calcination of the silica particles. Silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was coal, and amorphous fumed silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was crystalline silica. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production and therefore may be important in the pathophysiological consequences of occupational mineral dust inhalation.

Simple treatment methods, employing the least possible equipment, can sometimes be established for marginal ores and economical results achieved. In continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno Station of the Bureau of Mines, typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been investigated. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores, as well as the conservation and recovery of values in products from former operations that were discarded because of past inability to treat them economically. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas some involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test, work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials; and because, inasmuch as the samples were representative of the districts from which they were obtained, this in-formation should be helpful in the future development of these districts. The present report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on oxide ores only, which contained gold and silver and in some cases base metals. The methods of treatment used include gravity concentration, amalgamation, flotation, and cyanidation. For the most part, only standard laboratory procedures were employed. No attempts were made to develop new methods for the low-grade refractory ores in this group of samples if simple treatment was not successful, as the stage of development of the properties did not warrant extensive experimentation on the samples submitted.

As part of a program to devise alternative technologies for producing alumina from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay to form basic aluminum chloride solutions. The use of sulfur combined with either sand or waste copper tailings was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a substitute for a good graded aggregate in asphalt paving materials. The research was part of a utilization program to develop meaningful uses for a projected oversupply of sulfur. Many sections of the country lack good aggregate for paving but do have available sources of sands and sulfur. The development of paving mixtures of desert sands or tailings with sulfur and asphalt was accomplished in the laboratory and tested by laying small paving test sections. Three types of material were studied for use with the sulfur and asphalt. They were (1) a concrete sand similar in gradation to river or beach sands, (2) desert blow sand, and (3) waste copper tailings. Desert blow sand and waste copper tailings are much finer than concrete sand. Mix designs were established for the three types of materials, sulfur, and asphalt used in the paving materials. The best mix designs were as follows, in weight-percent: 80.5 concrete sand, 13.5 sulfur, and 6 asphalt; and 77 either blow sand or tailings, 17 sulfur, and 6 asphalt. Small-scale testing showed that these mixtures were suitable paving materials but would require specialized equipment for transporting and laying. The chemical modification of sulfur to obtain properties that would allow placement of these materials with normal asphalt paving equipment was studied. Results indicate that reacting sulfur with dicyclopentadiene before adding it to the paving mixture was effective in modifying the sand-sulfur-asphalt paving so it could be placed and rolled with conventional equipment.

Four applications of radiotracer techniques in metallurgical research are described: (1) In electrowinning tungsten from scheelite, molybdenum 99 was used to detemine the molybdenum concentration of the fused alkali-phosphate bath and the electrowon tungsten; (2) an attempt to detemine the solubility of tagged ceric oxide in molten CeF3-BaF2-LiF was unsuccessful, but a high rate of cerium ion exchange was observed; (3) iron 59 was added to cerium during casting and used to follow the migration of iron during solid state electrolysis; (4) radiotracers were used in developing special analytical techniques applicable to high-purity rare-earth metals produced by molten salt electrolysis.

In connection with its investigations of strategic minerals in the United States, the Bureau of Mines ran magnetic surveys totaling more than 533,000 linear feet at 30 deposits of magnetite in northern New Jersey. These deposits occur in a belt of granitic gneiss and in limited areas of limestone. The ore consists of magnetite accompanied by score of the following minerals: Hornblende, augite, apatite, feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet and pyrolusite. Results of these investigations are being presented in two reports of which this is the second. The first paper, Certain. Magnetite Deposits in New Jersey, by A. L. Neumann and McHenry Mosier, was issued in April 1948 as Report of Investigations 4225.

Two air classification systems were built and tested as separatory devices for recovering the nonferrous metal values from shredded automotive nonmagnetic reject scrap. A horizontal air system with a capacity up to 16 tons per hour was used to obtain preliminary separations, and a smaller capacity vertical system was used as a cleaning device. Shredded automobile reject material containing aluminum, copper, and zinc values of about $55 per ton were air-classified in the horizontal elutriator. Ninety-six percent of the metal was recovered in a 74-percent metal concentrate. Tandem operation of both classifiers recovered 92 percent of the metal in an 80-percent concentrate while rejecting 87 percent of the nonmetallics. Heavy media separation of the air-classified concentrate produced an overall recovery of 91 percent of the metal in the form of a 99-percent metal concentrate.

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. A major difficulty encountered during the research was that nation¬al countries (almost world-wide) are in the process of revising their electrical hazard reduction standards. Their principal goal is to align their standards with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Recommendations Publication Series 79. (31-37) Additionally, CENELEC is requiring all Common Market countries to harmonize their standards. (85) However in the coal mining industry some hazard re¬duction techniques are not being accepted because some systems may not be applicable. Therefore, past literature might not directly relate a country's current feeling about explosion-proof standards. An authority in the United Kingdom (which has been a leader in hazard reduction mainly through work at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment) brought up an additional point. (15) He hopes that since revising British standards BS229 into BS4683, with the intention of corresponding with the IEC 79 series, the recent CENELEC harmoni¬zation process will also follow IEC. (8, 9, 10) The past trend in other major Common Market countries prior to CENELEC's requirement results in the authors' speculation that the standards will be pattern¬ed after the IEC Publications. (5,17,60,84,102) Several letters were sent to the East Block countries but, disa¬ppointingly, replies were dispatched only from the USSR and Poland. Recent Polish standards (1973) were received, and a very close match to the IEC Publications has been noted. (76,77) Because of their economic community, it is extremely logical to assume that the East Block stand¬ards are therefore in concurrence with the IEC. Japanese specifications also appear to be compatible with the IEC Recommendations. (42,43)

During investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from several properties in Montana. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration to produce marketable-grade products. The Tzarena claim, one of the properties sampled, is on the western end of the Rama or Black Chief vein in the city of Butte, Silver Bow County, Mont., on the southwestern periphery of the mining district. The Black Chief 'WAR system contains one of the largest and most extensive known rhodochrosite deposits in the world. Test work was conducted on two samples of Tzarena ore. Sample 1 is representative of a vain 5 feet wide on the 150-foot level of the Tzarena shaft. Sample 2 is representative of a vein 8 feet wide in the 100-foot level of the shaft. The Minnie Jane mine, 1/2 mile northwest of the Tzarena claim, contains ore similar in mineralogical composition to Tzarena ore but differing materially in manganese content and to some extent in physical characteristics. Ore-dressing investigations were made on three samples of Minnie Jane ore. Sample 1 represented stock-piled ore, sample 2 represented ore from Minnie Jane mine having a considerable sulfide content, and sample 3 represented low-grade ore.

Pillar design is the first line of defense against rock falls—the greatest single safety hazard faced by underground coal miners in the United States and abroad. To help advance the state of the art in this fundamental mining science, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health organized the Second International Workshop on Coal Pillar Mechanics and Design. The workshop was held in Vail, CO, on June 6,1999, in association with the 37th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium. The proceedings include 15 papers from leading ground control specialists in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of South Africa. The papers address the entire range of issues associated with coal pillars and have a decidedly practical flavor. Topics include numerical modeling, empirical design formulas based on case histories, field measurements, and post failure mechanics.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed porous beads containing immobilized biological materials such as sphagnum peat moss for extracting metal contaminants from waste waters. The beads, designated as BIO-FIX beads, have removed toxic metals from over 100 waters in laboratory tests. These waters include acid mine drainage (AMD) water from mining sites, metallurgical and chemical industry waste water, and contaminated ground water. Following the laboratory studies, cooperative field tests were conducted to evaluate the metal adsorption properties of the beads in column and low-maintenance circuits, determine bead stability in varied climatic situations, and demonstrate the beads' potential as a viable waste water treatment technique. Field results indicated that BIO-FIX beads readily adsorbed cadmium, lead, and other toxic metals from dilute waters; effluents frequently met drinking water standards and other discharge criteria. The beads exhibited excellent handling characteristics in both column and low-maintenance circuits, and continued to extract metal ions after repeated loading-elution cycles. Based on laboratory and field data, cost evaluations for using BIO-FIX technology to treat two AMD waters were prepared. Operating costs for BIO-FIX treatment, which ranged from $1.40 to $2.30 per 1,000 gal of water treated, were comparable with chemical precipitation costs.

Steel and iron pipe lined with cement to protect it against corrosion has been used in the municipal water systems of the New England States since about 1870. In most recent years, the petroleum industry adopted cement-lined pipe to forestall corrosion, particularly in those areas where large quantities of corrosive brines and hydrogen sulfide are associated with the oil produced. Many of the oil companies had on hand large quantities of corroded pipe, normally disposed of as scrap, which could be cleaned, lined with cement, and returned to service. It was soon learned that after the so-called scrap pipe was lined with cement much of it could serve fully as well as new cement-lined pipe. The demand for lining used pipe with cement resulted in the establishment of several processing, plants in the Mid-Continent oil-producing area. Today six cement-lining plants serve the areas three in Oklahoma and one each in Kansas, Texas, and Illinois. All of these plants have lined large quantities of used pipe for the brine-disposal systems of western Kansas, Illinois, and east Texas and also for the operators of water-flooding projects in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, where large quantities of brine and fresh water are being injected into the oil-bearing formations as a secondary oil-recovery method. Since war demands during the past 2 years have created an acute shortage of steel, the need of reclaiming used pipe for the expansion of oil-producing operations has become more evident than ever before. Thus the new industry (about 6 years old) - lining used pipe with cement - is saving large quantities of steel at a critical time by reclaiming used pipe and preventing further- corrosion.

The USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) studied mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in the Roberts WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in 1984. The 15,090-acre WSA, located 35 miles northwest of Eureka, NV, is underlain by alluvial deposits of Quaternary age, extrusive and intrusive volcanic rocks of Oligocene through Miocene age, and metasedimentary rocks of Cambrian through Permian age. The Roberts Mountain Thrust fault cuts through the WSA, dividing the metasedimentary rocks into upper and lower plate rock units. One mine, the Kelley, which produced 397 tons of lead-zinc ore prior to 1940, and two prospects are within the WSA; no resources were identified. Exploration for precious metal deposits is presently being conducted in and adjacent to the WSA on large claim blocks. The study area contains six sites in and near these claim blocks that have anomalous gold and silver. Detailed exploration is needed to delineate resources. High purity silica rocks are present in the WSA. Barite, phosphate, oil shale, and vanadium occurrences just outside the WSA may extend into it, but no such occurrences were observed during the USBM study.

Experience and research have shown that an effective way to reduce structural damage from explosions is to provide adequate pressure-relief vents in the walls of equipment and buildings within which explosions might occur. In general, free or unrestricted openings represent the most efficient type of vent. However, in many manufacturing operations it is impractical to use free vents, and it becomes necessary to cover the openings with diaphragms or blow-out disks, hinged panels, or other devices, in order to give protection against weather changes, to prevent the efflux of dusts or vapors from equipment during normal operations, or for other reasons. A few data on the pressure-relieving capacities of hinged panels and a paper diaphragm were published in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3924, which covered the first phase of the dust-explosion venting study made by the Bureau. The present report describes recent experiments that were made to determine the relative effectiveness of an unrestricted vent and 22 types of closures, including various paper, cloth, and metal-foil diaphragms, hinged doors or panels, and several kinds of scored and unscored glass panes. The tests showed that many of the vent closures were effective in releasing the explosions rapidly during their incipient stage, so that the development of destructive pressures was prevented. Vents of this type should prove useful in safeguarding industrial equipment from severe explosion damage. The experiments disclosed that the venting capacities of the diaphragms are approximately inversely proportional to their static bursting strengths.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines through- out the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above mines throughout the coalfields. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10-pct false alarm rate, the expected probability of detecting a miner's signal from a depth of 1,000 ft is 54 pct; at 500 ft it is 95 pct. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 pct and 50 pct, respectively, of U.S. coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at a depth of 1,000 ft, for every 3 db of improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, the probability of detection increases 6 to 8 pct.

In view of publications recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming , particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page lt and condition 2 on page 23 .. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming .
