The heats of formation of anhydrous ferric sulfate and anhydrous indium sulfate were determined by solution calorimetry. At 298.15° K the heats of formation from the metal, rhombic sulfur, and oxygen were -615.6 ±O.7 kcal/mole for ferric sulfate and -649.6 ±O.6 kcal/mole for indium sulfate. Heats of decomposition at 298.15° K are given for the reaction that forms metal oxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen) and for the reaction that forms the metal oxide and sulfur trioxide.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effects of potassium trithiocarbonate (KTTC), a degradation product of potassium ethylxanthate (KEX), on flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Small amounts of KTTC were identified in fresh and aged solutions of KEX using thin-layer chromotography. Hallimond tube flotation tests on pure minerals showed that KTTC acts as a weak collector for chalcopyrite. Both KEX and KTTC tend to depress molybdenite, but the depression effect is easily overcome by addition of a small quantity of fuel oil. The results of the Hallimond tube tests were confirmed in batch flotation tests using a porphyry copper ore.

A primary amine extraction system was investigated for fractionating a cerium-group, lanthanide sulfate mixture. Addition of diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (DTPA) to the amine extraction system resulted in separation factors as high as 5.4 for lanthanum-cerium, 8.0 for cerium-praseodymium, 3.7 for praseodymium-neodymium, and 7.0 for neodymium-samarium. In multistage studies on a cerium-free lanthanide mixture, 96 percent of the lanthanum was recovered with a purity of 95 percent.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous pilot plant flotation tests on a complex calcareous fluorspar ore from Cave-in-Rock, Ill., to determine the technical feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates by the sodium fluoride-calcium lignin sulfonate-fatty acid method of concentrating fluorspar previously developed by the Bureau. The continuous flotation tests, treating about 150 pounds of ore per hour, produced fluorspar concentrates assaying 96.4 percent CaF2; 90 percent of the fluorspar was recovered.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the S02 leaching of MgO from high-MgO-bearing Florida phosphate concentrates. The S02 was effective in leaching some of the MgO from three phosphate concentrates; flow rate of the S02 and leach time were major factors in determining the amount of MgO leached. Calcining the samples, then grinding to minus 200 mesh, and elevating the leach temperature gave only small increases in the amount of MgO leached. The research also showed that some of the MgO was so intimately associated with the phosphate mineral that it could not be removed by S02 leaching. This amounted to about 0.6, 0.7, and 1.0 pct MgO in three leached residues. The calculated heads for the three concentrate samples averaged 1.4, 1.1, and 1.5 pct MgO, respectively, before leaching.

"The Piedmont Manganese Belt extends from Taliferro County, Georgia, 70 miles in a northeasterly direction through Greenwood County, South Carolina, and conforms with the trend of the Piedmont Province. The total area of the belt is reported to be about 1,000 square miles, and the maximum-width is about 24 miles.Manganese has been known to exist in the belt since 1845. M. Tuomey mentioned a deposit in the Edgefield district on Hard Labor Creek in South Carolina in a report on the geology of South Carolina published in 1848.Ore was first mined about the time of the first World War, when the Colley mine, near Lincolnton, Ga., was. Opened. The only operation in the area at present is that of the Abernathy & Kehaya Mining Co., at McCormick, S. C.The geographical position of the belt is from west longitude 82° 57’, north latitude 33° 39' to west longitude 82° 06', north latitude 34° 08'. The towns of Washington and Lincolnton, Ga., and McCormick and Greenwood, S. C., are in or near the belt.An exploratory project of the Bureau of Mines was started on the McCormick, S. C., deposit in April 1944, and trenching, test pitting, and hand-auger drilling-were done on a small scale until early in October 1944. (Fig. 1.) In November 1944 work was begun on a property 12 miles north of McCormick, known as Parsons Mountain, which is leased to M. H. McKnight by the United States Forest Service. From March 15 to March 24, 1945, work was done on the property of Mrs. H. B. Ross, which is known as the Morgan farm.The Abernathy & Kehaya manganese mine contains what is locally known as the Dorn gold mine; mineral rights on the property were owned by M. G. & J. J. Dorn, Inc."

Many gold-bearing ores throughout the Western United States contain small quantities of mercury. The presence of mercury not only decreases the gold-loading capacity of the activated carbon, but complicates the fire refining of cathodes and creates a potential health hazard. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods to limit mercury extraction during gold ore leaching and to remove mercury from cyanide leach solu-tions. Mercury dissolution was reduced from 40 to 10 pct by decreasing NaCN concentration from 20 lb to 0.34 lb per ton of solution at a pH of <11. When 0.1 lb CaS per ton of ore was added to a leach slurry, mer-cury extraction was reduced from 27 to 0.4 pct. Less than 0.5 pct of the mercury was solubilized when <0.1 lb CaS per ton of are, along with lime and NaCN, was added to a simulated grinding circuit.

"Introduction.Sixty years ago, M. Berthelot found that ethylene could be selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures by concentrated sulphuric acid, and that the compound formed by the chemical union of the gas and acid was readily decomposed by heating with water, yielding ethyl alcohol. Only within the last few years has there been any attempt to make use of this discovery technically.Bury*, working in England at the Skinningrove Iron Works and on a commercial scale, developed a technical method for converting, the ethylene of coke-oven as into alcohol. With a gas containing less than 3 per cent of ethylene, he obtained a yield of 1.6 gallons of alcohol per ton of coal carbonized.De Loisy** perfected a technical method for treatment of coke-oven as for alcohol. Evidently this work was carried out on a semi-commercial scale. His method is based on the use of catalytic agents for hastening the absorption of ethylene by sulphuric acid. He uses part of the spent acid for drying the gases and pact for the manufacture of ammonium sulphate. Excess acid is reconcentrated by waste heat. Others have worked on the problem, but so far there has been no large recovery of ethylene from coke-oven gases. The chief difficulty seems to lie in the low efficiency (about 50% of methods and tae relatively low concentrations of ethylene in the gases treated. Silver consumption in the arts and industries of the United States during 1930 and 1931 has remained remarkably near the high level established in 1929. Undoubtedly the sharp drop in the price of silver has been an important factor in supporting consumption, but silver&apos;s peculiar properties and uses probably have been an even more compelling reason for its sustained utilization. In its most important use - sterling silverware - it seemingly has most serious competition, but well established tradition protects the demand for sterling ware and the law forbids the term "sterling" to be applied to any material not containing at least 92.5 per cent silver. The photographic industry is dependent upon properties of certain silver salts possessed by no other material. Consequently silver is indispensable to all photography, including the huge motion picture industry. Other uses for silver could be listed which, because of special features, likewise have tended to maintain the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States. The figures which this report makes available for the first time are the detailed silver consumption figures for the arts and industries of the United States for 1930 and 1931. These figures have been tabulated with the previously published(3) figures for 1928 and 1929 thus presenting a 4-year statistical record of silver consumption. All quantities are given in troy ounces, 1,000 fine.

Viable domestic mineral industries are essential to the economic health of the United States and the well-being of its citizens. The charts in this publication reflect developments significant to the Nation&apos;s mineral industries during 1975. Last year was a year of reduced activity for the Nation&apos;s mineral industries. Although the value of the country&apos;s total mineral output rose, for example, the overall production and use of many minerals fell. At the same time, the industry experienced lower profits and higher debt/equity ratios. These and other adverse effects on many segments of the Nation&apos;s mineral industries resulted from the overall decline in domestic and international economic activity.

The Bumpus Cove area is in Unicoi County, Tenn., about 9 miles south of Jonesboro and 5 miles northwest of Erwin. Iron and lead ores were mined in the Bumpus Cove area before the American Revolution. The production of those metals continued intermittently until 1916. In 1850 this area was the most important producer of iron in the South. In 1911 several carloads of zinc ore was recovered from old dumps and shipped to Missouri smelters. In 1913 systematic mining of zinc ores was begun and continued until 1916. After that year, mining again became sporadic and continued so until discontinued in 1943.

The Explosives Division of the United States Bureau of Mines makes certain laboratory and field investigations that deal with explosions, explosives, ignition, and combustion, together with many related problems, such as the cause and prevention of fires, and certain fundamental scientific questions bearing upon the determination of the chemical and physical mechanisms underlying some of the important phenomena encountered. Its work on explosives has been particularly directed toward determination of the chemical and physical characteristics of explosives designed for use in coal mines and in a more limited way to those used in metal mines, tunnels, quarries, and other engineering operations. This testing is handled by two units of the Explosives Division, as follows:

Laboratory batch and pilot plant flotation tests were made to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial grade kyanite from a quartzite- kyanite rock from the Graves Mountain, Ga., deposit. Best results in laboratory and continuous tests were obtained using sodium carbonate for pH control, citric acid for quartz depression, and oleic acid as the kyanite collector. Over 80 percent of the kyanite was recovered in a concentrate analyzing 56.8 percent Al203 and 3.8 percent hydrochloric acid soluble Fe203. Subsequent treatment of the flotation concentrate by magnetic separation reduced the acid soluble Fe2O3 to 0.6 percent and increased the alumina content to 59.2 percent. Acid leaching of the concentrate gave a product analyzing 59.7 percent Al203 and about 0.1 percent Fe203. As a result of the beneficiation research, a commercial kyanite flotation plant was completed in September 1962 by private industry.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 550-acre Carson-Iceberg Wilderness Study Area (NV-030-532), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Alpine County, CA, 11 mi southeast of Markleeville, CA. Tertiary volcanic and granitic rocks, as well as alluvium, underlie the area. Hydrothermal alteration and faulting have affected some rocks; argillic, silicic, and limonitic alteration are found, particularly near faults. No mineral resources were identified in the Wilderness Study Area. The area has one small pit and no mines or claims. Samples from the Wilderness Study Area and vicinity contained uneconomic amounts of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, mercury, arsenic, and molybdenum. Mineral occurrences are too small and low grade to be of interest within the foreseeable future.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated leaching automobile catalysts with sodium cyanide (NaCN) solutions at high temperatures to recover platinum-group metals (PGM). The feed was virgin monolith rejects, used monolith, and used pellet catalysts. Leaching with a 5-pct NaCN solution for 1 h at 160° C dissolved over 97 pct of the PGM in the virgin monolith, over 85 pct of the PGM in the used monolith, and over 90 pct of the PGM in the used pellet catalyst. Over 99.8 pct of the dissolved PGM was recovered as a precipitate by heating the solution to 250° C for 1 h in an autoclave. The cyanide complexes were decomposed, and free cyanide was destroyed.

As part of an ongoing program to develop high-quality materials with improved performance and service lives, and to conserve critical minerals, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, researchers studied the process of hot-rolling metals, alloys, and composites in vacuum. First, a comprehensive review of the literature is presented, including the advantages and disadvantages of using vacuum. Next, details of hot-rolling titanium, chromium, and molybdenum-iron bimetal are given. Finally, the design of new equipment is described. At this time, it is uncertain whether hot-rolling metals in vacuum will gain commercial acceptance in the future.

Oil shale has been defined as, "a compact, laminated rock of sedimentary origin yielding over 35 percent of ash and containing organic matter that yields oil when distilled but not appreciably when extracted with the ordinary solvents for petroleum." The oil-yielding organic matter in oil shale, commonly called kerogen, decomposes upon application of heat to form bituminous materials that are soluble in organic solvents and may be extracted from the inorganic residue. However, separation usually is accomplished by continuing the heating and thereby cracking the primary bitumens to gas and oil, which distill, leaving a carbonaceous material on the mineral residue. It has been suggested that this conversion takes place only at relatively high temperatures - 750°F or higher. On the other hand, other workers have found that transformation may take place to some extent at temperatures as low as 400°F. In either a solvent extraction or a destructive distillation process for separating organic material from the inorganic portion of oil shale, the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of the oil shale sufficiently to induce a satisfactory rate of conversion of kerogen to oil is important in determining the design of an economical process. Likewise, the quantity of heat recoverable from a spent shale is important in determining the overall heat balance of the process. Published data on the specific heat of American oil shales are meager. Gavin and Sharp present data for two samples of Colorado oil shale, one from near DeBeque and one from Parachute Creek, and for a sample of spent shale over a temperature range of 68°F to 1940°F. McKee and Lydor present data on the specific heat of two samples of oil shale from near DeBeque, Colorado. Additional thermal data on various grades of oil shale over a wider range of temperature are needed in order to apply sound engineering practices to the design of equipment for processing oil shale.

The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines-developed induction slag melting process is of concern to the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of removing the nonconductive molten calcium fluoride (CaF2) slag used as an insulator between the titanium and the segmented copper crucible. The data were obtained from single-induction-melted ingots prepared with no CaF2 insulating slag and an ingot prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct CaP2 slag. The results showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted and annealed Ti-6AI-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in "Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H." High-cycle, tension-tension fatigue testing yielded similar results. The data from 44 of the 45 specimens were contained within the typical scatter band for fatigue data on wrought Ti-6AI-4V alloy. Although the removal of the insulating slag is a desirable change, the data from the specimens with the previously standard 4 pct slag addition showed no detrimental effect from the slag inclusions.
