"SYNOPSISKnown health hazards associated with the breathing of respirable dusts, particularly silica dust, during mining are becoming a great concern in many parts of the world. The search for effective and low cost dust control methods for underdeveloped countries will help in improving the productivity and keeping the mine environment safe. This article addresses the problem by providing suggestions concerning the easiest and most cost effective methods to control respirable dust in mining and mineral processing operations. INTRODUCTIONMedical BackgroundLung diseases caused by dust in mining operations have been recognized by mankind since the time of the Roman Empire. The writings of Pliny the Younger on natural history reported on maladies associated with dust in mining in the first century AD. However, no significant advances in controlling the lung diseases of miners came about for many centuries. The effects of mineral dusts were further described by Georgius Agricola in his sixteenth century book on mining (Agricola, 1556). After the appearance of Agricola""s book, lung diseases were more readily recognized, but the nature and severity of the ailments associated with mineral dusts could not be readily interpreted.In 1896, the discovery of x-rays by Roentgen advanced the diagnosis of lung diseases and the knowledge of what causes these diseases. In addition, the discovery allowed medical personnel some method of judging the extent and severity of the lung diseases in human beings. During the ensuing years, the term 'pneumoconiosis' became the common term to describe any of the diseases of the lung in which dust particles deposited in the lungs caused fibrous tissue and loss of some of the respiratory function. However, little in the way of social remedies for the diseases resulted until much later. Society was still not ready to act decisively to reduce the causes of lung disease due to the dusty conditions in the work place.Social action against lung diseases did not occur in the United States (US) until the 1930s. At that time, a tunnel driven through a sandstone mountain near Gauley Bridge. West Virginia, caused the death of several hundred workers due to acute silicosis, a severe form of pneumoconiosis caused by silica (Seaton, 1975). Dust conditions in this tunnel were quite bad, causing many of the workers to be subjected to extremely high silica dust concentrations. The severity of the disease in many of the workers became known to the public and prompted the US Congress and many of the states to enact laws to reduce the dust levels."

This paper, which describes mining methods and practices at the Hurricane Creek bauxite mine of Reynolds Mining Corp. in central Arkansas, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Hurricane Creek mine is in sec. 12, T. 2 S., R. 14 W., and sees. 7 and 18, T. 2 S., R. 13 W., Saline County, Ark., about 4 miles east of Bauxite. (See fig. 1.) Bauxite has been mined underground at the Hurricane Creek property since 1942. The operation is notable for relatively high recovery of bauxite under the adverse conditions of unconsolidated water-bearing overburden and unstable clay floor. Controlled caving, timbered stope walls, and efficient drainage systems on the surface and underground have minimized the problems and raised ore recovery about 25 percent above that formerly obtained.

In 1984, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Black Rock Desert Wilderness Study Area (WSA) (NV-020-620), which covers approximately 319,000 acres in Humboldt County, Nevada. About 90% of the WSA is underlain by Pleistocene desert playa sediments; the remainder is comprised of Jurassic-Triassic metamorphic rocks, a Cretaceous intrusive and Tertiary volcanic rocks. Most of the WSA is within a down-dropped fault block of the Basin and Range physiographic province. No mines or evidence of major exploration were identified within the WSA; but five claim blocks within or adjacent to the WSA and zones of anomalous character as defined by the Bureau of Land Management were examined. No mineral resources were identified, but anomalous gold, silver, and indicator element content of samples taken near Pinto Hot Springs indicate resources may exist. Lithium content of samples from near-surface sediments on the desert playa is too low for resources, out geologic conditions are favorable for higher concentrations at depth. Occurrences of zeolites are not considered to be of commercial interest. Approximately 27,000 acres are held under geothermal lease, and most of the WSA is of interest for oil and gas. The molecular species occurring at the mineral-reagent interface of the galena-aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate system was studied by developing a technique for using an attenuated reflection method in conjunction with standard infrared spectroscopy procedures. Lead ethyl xanthate was detected from the infrared spectra of all galena surfaces treated in the pH range of 7 to 11. At pH 8.5, lead ethyl xanthate formed as a film chemically bonded to the galena surface. A solvent extraction sampling method was employed with infrared spectroscopy to obtain quantitative data on the lead ethyl xanthate removed from the galena surface. The data showed that between pH 7 and 11 thy quantity of lead ethyl xanthate physically adsorbed decreased as the pH was decreased; in the same pH range, the quantity of free lad ethyl xanthate in the aqueous medium remained constant, and the amount of unreacted xanthate varied.

Between 1990 and 1991, the Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of the Kaibab National Forest to appraise the resources present and to determine the types of deposits, and their location. The study included a comprehensive literature search and a limited amount of field investigation of minerals and mining activity in and near the Forest. Small amounts of copper with lesser amounts of gold and silver have been produced from limestone-hosted, strata-bound deposits in the North Kaibab and Tusayan Ranger Districts. In addition to these small metallic deposits, volcanic cinders, pumice, flagstone, and sand and gravel have been quarried in the Chalendar and Williams Ranger Districts. At least ten uranium-mineralized breccia pipes have been identified in the Tusayan Ranger District, One of these, the Canyon pipe, contains a high-grade uranium ore body with associated silver, copper, lead, vanadium, and zinc. The mine permit for the Canyon pipe has been approved and the mine shaft head frame erected.

The Bureau of fines has tested a portable microseismic processor recorder at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, both in an environmentally controlled enclosure and, with minimal protection, in a working area of the mine. In both trials the device demonstrated effective and reliable data acquisition capabilities.

This report describes a trip to Europe in the interest of safety in coal mines. It reviews the Eighth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Re-search, which met in Dortmund-Derne, Germany, July 5-10, 1954, to discuss results of studies made in different countries to improve health and safety conditions under-ground. It also summarizes information on subjects of special interest in the United States gained by the writer in visits to mining experiment stations in Belgium, France, and England. The efforts being made to protect life and property underground were discussed, and ideas and experiences were interchanged freely, not only during the conference but also during visits to the several countries. Helpful information was obtained on many topics of interest, but time did not permit as thorough a discussion on some of them as might be desired.

The method for smelting zinc in horizontal retorts developed several centuries ago is still in use. This process consists essentially of the reduction of zinc oxide by carbon at 1,200° to 1,400° C. in a fire-clay retort. The reaction is highly endothermic, and a high radiation loss occurs in transferring the heat of reaction through the fire-clay walls. In recent years, silicon carbide retorts with much better heat-transfer characteristics than fire clay have been supplanting the old retorts. The practical impossibility of recovering the carbon monoxide formed in the reduction causes a large loss of fuel. Intermittent smelting is done in small retorts that are manually charged and discharged, and the furnace crews must be specially trained if efficient results are to be obtained. During the past 20 years several processes have been introduced that have substantially improved the horizontal-retort process. One of these, developed by the New Jersey Zinc Co., consists of a continuous process in which a briquetted mixture of zinc sinter, reducing agent, and binder is coked at 750° to 900° C. and charged into a vertical silicon carbide retort. A supply of displacement air or exhaust combustion gas is introduced at the base of the retort at an appropriate pressure in order to keep the zinc vapor from condensing on the cooled residue in the lower part of the retort. Any .oxidizing constituents in the displacement gas are converted to carbon monoxide by reaction with the carbon in the charge. The spent residue is continuously removed at the bottom of tl1e retort. The chief advantages of this process are said to be increased output per man-day, improved working conditions, high recovery of zinc, increased thermal efficiency, and long retort life.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study comparing the construction costs, leakage measurements, and predicted performance of different types of large stoppings built and tested in a room-and-pillar oil-shale mine. The six full-sized structures (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) included both permanent and temporary stoppings and were fabricated using materials ranging from structural steel to coated brattice cloth. Leakage across each stopping was measured at differential pressures ranging up to 1.0 in w.g., using both the brattice window method and sulfur hexa-fluoride (SF6) tracer gas. Blast air pressures resulting from a full-scale face blast of approximately 1,800 lb of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives were measured across two of the stoppings and the pre-and post-leakage rates were compared for all the stoppings. Overall performance of the stoppings for production applications was evaluated using an operational model of a two-panel oil-shale mine. Different combinations of temporary and permanent stoppings were evaluated based upon ventilation performance and construction and operating costs.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of physically separating Missouri and Minnesota granites into commercially usable fractions of feldspar, quartz, and mica by mineral dressing techniques. The probability of r covering a feldspar fraction from raw granite suitable for commercial uses was developed through correlation of the iron oxide content by extensive petrographic studies. This probability evaluation also included Wisconsin granites and a high-feldspar iron ore concentration tailing from Missouri. Laboratory recoveries of feldspar and quartz were on the order of 80 percent. Mineral content of each fraction was generally over 95 percent, indicating excellent response to separatory techniques, Acid leaching of feldspar and quartz concentrates to remove iron oxide improved the grades chemically; however, occluded iron oxide particles in the leached products prevented attaining top grades of feldspar. Mica was removed as scrap grade at low recoveries. Each concentrate conformed to some category of commercial feldspar, quartz, or mica.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines hydrologic-subsidence investigation was to evaluate the effects of longwall mining on the local ground water regime through field monitoring and numerical modeling. Field data were obtained from multiple-position borehole extensometers (MPBX's) that were used to measure subsurface displacements. Survey monuments were installed to measure mining-induced surface deformations. Numerous drawdown and recovery tests were performed to characterize hydrologic properties of the overburden strata. Coreholes were drilled above the study area to determine lithologic and strength characteristics of the overburden strata using the rock samples collected. Electronic recorders were installed on all monitoring wells to continuously monitor ground water levels in coordination with mining of the longwall panels. A combined finite element model of the deformation of overlying strata, and it's influence on ground water flow was used to define the change in local and regional water budgets. The predicted effects of the postmining ground water system determined by the model correlated well with field data collected from the fieldsite. Without an infiltration rate added to the model, a static decrease of 3.0 m (10 ft) in water level would occur due to mining of both longwall panels and if an infiltration rate was inputted in the model, no predicted long-term effects would occur to the ground water system.

Leaching of a Georgia umber ore when using both ferrous sulfate and pickle liquor was studied in the laboratory . The ferrous sulfate content of the leach solution was the major factor affecting the extraction of manganese from the ore . Time , temperature , and the sulfuric acid content of the leach solutions had relatively little effect on leaching of manganese from the ore ; however , these factors did affect the amount of iron extracted from the umber and/or precipitated from solution . Simulated countercurrent leaching of the ore with pickle liquor containing 130 gpl (grams per liter ) ferrous sulfate ( 48 gpl ferrous iron ) produced a pregnant solution having 16 gpl manganese and 41 gpl iron . Filtration tests of the leach slurries indicated that separating the leach solution and solids by vacuum filtration was impractical , whereas pressure filtration was feasible when the cake thickness was limited to about three- fourths of an inch . Fired pellets of the filter cake yielded a firm , hard product analyzing 56 percent iron and less than 0.1 percent sulfur .

Research was done by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of a low-molecular-weight polymer on wet grinding of quartz, dolomite, and a copper ore. A 5-in ball mill equipped with a torque sensor for precise measurement of input energy was used for batch grinding tests. Grinding parameters were determined from size distribution data on the feed material and ground product. Zeta potential measurements were made to determine the effect of the polymer on the surface properties of the three materials, and a viscometer was used to measure the effect of the polymer on slurry viscosity. The addition of the polymer caused a sharp increase in the negative value of the zeta potential for all three materials, indicating that pronounced adsorption was taking place. At a constant slurry percent solids, addition of the polymer caused a similar reduction in slurry viscosity for each material. For quartz, dolomite, and the copper ore, grinding efficiency, as measured by kilogram of product per kilowatt hour passing a given screen size, was not affected by the addition of the polymer. However, the lowering in slurry viscosity caused by addi-tion of the polymer permits grinding at a higher slurry percent solids.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations by the Alaska Mining Experiment Station, Juneau, to determine the practicability of treating cinnabar-stibnite ore by bulk flotation and controlled-atmosphere roasting of the concentrate. Ore from the Red Devil mine near Sleetmute, Alaska, was selected for testing; it is typical of ores widely distributed throughout the Kuskokwim River Basin. The material, consisting of stibnite and cinnabar in ankerite, dolomite, and quartz, assayed 1.55 percent Hg and 2.87 percent Sb. Continuous treatment of the ore in a laboratory flotation circuit recovered 95.7 percent of the mercury and 82.6 percent of the antimony in a concentrate that assayed 20.4 percent Hg and 34.6 percent Sb.

For the first time the Bureau of Mines is combining, in one report, comprehensive tabulations on both beehive and slot-type ovens. This publication presents statistical data on the number and capacity of all such coke ovens in the United States on December 31, 1957. Combining data on both types of ovens should prove helpful to those interested in keeping abreast of the latest changes in carbonizing capacity, particularly since the coke has similar properties and uses. Annual reports furnished to the Bureau of Mines by coke-oven operators shared that 78 oven-coke plants were operating in 22 States on December 31, 1957. This was a decline of one plant from December 31, 1956, as the Republic Steel Corp. took the ovens at Canton, Ohio, out of production on December 17, 1957, for dismantling and rebuilding in 1958. Total oven-coke capacity was 80,299,400 tons in 1957.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. A computerized, interpolative mapping technique based on the moving average method was shown to be adequate to estimate the between-drill-hole values of coal-seam variables. The forecasting of the spatial distribution of coal properties along the seam was of three kinds: (1) Estimation of the variable of interest on a regional basis from widely spaced sample points, (2) prediction of coal properties for product control from closely spaced data, and (3) prediction of coal properties for specified benches, or layers of the coal seam, from closely spaced sample points. Estimates obtained with the computerized, interpolative mapping procedure were useful in the delineation of seam thickness, elevation, and overburden and in the estimation of sulfur and ash concentrations during the early phases of exploration. This grid interpolation technique was found adequate to adjust between-drill-hole values for trends resulting from the combined effect of several variables on a measured response. This information, coupled with statistical and geologic data that can be obtained in the exploration phase of mining, enlarges the information base available for coal-mine development planning, energy forecasts, and environmental control associated with fossil fuel power generation.

The Bureau of Mines, under an interagency agreement with the Department of Energy (DOE), investigated the feasibility of hardfacing the critical surfaces of valves and similar devices by chemical vapor deposition. The purpose of this research was to increase the wear resistance of these components for use in the abrasive and erosive environment of coal gasification units. Tungsten and molybdenum coatings were produced on nickel-plated carbon steels and stain-less steels by hydrogen reduction of the metal hexafluoride at 325° to 600° C. Titanium nitride coatings were produced on low-carbon steels by the reaction of titanium tetrachloride, hydrogen, and nitrogen at 1,000° C. Titanium carbonitride coatings were produced on low-carbon steels by the reaction of nitrogen, hydrogen, and methane at 900° C. Tungsten, molybdenum and titanium nitride coatings were formed on 6-, 10-, and l2-inch (0.15-, 0.25-, and 0.30-meter) ball valve seats for evaluation in the low-Btu coal gasification pilot plant at the Morgantown Energy Research Center, Morgantown, W. Va.
