INTRODUCTION High tellurium contents in the ancient volcanogenic massive sulfides (VMS) and modern seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) have been reported by V.Maslennikov (Maslennikov et al., 2013). However findings of tellurium minerals in SMS are rather rare. The only reported coloradoite and bi-melonite, have been found in massive sulfides from Rainbow hydrothermal field (Fouquet, 2010). Here we present data about Te - minerals in sulfide chimneys of different ages (up to 84.7 kyr - Cherkashov et al., 2010 ) from Semyenov-2 hydrothermal field. The obtained results The Semyenov hydrothermal cluster was discovered and studied in the course of cruises 30 and 32 of R/V Professor Logachev (2007 and 2009) at 13º31´ N, MAR. This area is associated with an oceanic core complex and associated with serpentinized gabbro- peridotites and basalts. Plagiogranites and tonalites have been dredged on seafloor in the Semyenov cluster area (Cherkashov et al., 2013; Pertsev et al., 2012). In total, 25 sulfides samples have been studied. The major and minor mineralogical phases were identified using reflected light microscope. Major element compositions of ore- forming minerals were analyzed on a Hitachi S3400N scanning electron microscope at the Geomodel Center, St. Petersburg State University (St. Petersburg, Russia) with an AzTec Energy 350 (EDX) detector and an INCA 500 (WDX) detector.

The particles that make up the deep-sea sediments have two main sources: 1) those that are created in situ from dissolved components and 2) those that are washed into the ocean in solid phases from the continents, atmosphere, space and interior of the Earth. Many particles as they sink through the water column reaches the seabed and are known as pelagic sediments with terrigenous, biogenic, authigenic, and cosmogenic components. Among the minerals found in the terrigenous fraction of pelagic sediments are quartz, clay minerals, feldspar, micas, ferromagnesians, and the biogenic fraction with remains of siliceous organisms, such as, radiolarian and diatoms. The chemical nature of marine sediments is controlled by the contribution of particulate matter derived from various sources with varying compositions for the fixing of elements during deposition and the compositional changes carried out within the sediments during diagenesis. In the last decade there have been several studies on the mineralogical composition of seabed sediments, suspended particulate materials and cores, together with paleontological and geochemical data are used for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions, analyze changes in sea level, stratigraphic correlations and identify past and present sources of sediment and terrigenous input pathways and to describe the current ocean mass (Martins et al., 2001, Oliveira et al., 1998). There is also a scientific and economic interest in the authigenic fraction of pelagic sediments formed from other materials for polymetallic nodules. The study of sediments associated with polymetallic nodules helps to know the genesis, evolution and occurrence of these deposits (De Koven et al., 2003, Dubinin et al., 2008).

The importance of cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts for possible future rare metal sources has been recognized these 30 years. The thin layer-type coverage and the micro-topographic undulation of basement affect not only the excavation efficiency but also the economy of mining venture. Because of these distribution characteristics, no economic feasibility has been recognized through the past economic analyses. On the basis of a recent geological study about seamount rocks, a possibility of by-product substrate recovery for phosphorous supply with cobalt-rich manganese crust mining has been highlighted. In the mining model, the substrate rocks are utilized as phosphates for agricultural and chemical usages. Under some preliminary technical and economic assumptions, the possibility of cobalt-rich manganese crust mining venture is examined. The results show a better economy of the venture including the substrate rock usage for phosphorous supply. Introduction Cobalt-rich Manganese Crusts and the Economic Feasibility Cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and higher cobalt concentration than manganese nodules (Cronan, 1980; Halbach, 1982; Manheim, 1986). In the earlier stage, the geological distribution characteristics were reported (Cronan, 1984; Clark et al., 1984; Misawa et al., 1987; Pichocki and Hoffert, 1987) and a systematic feasibility of the mining was studied (Hawaii DPED, 1987).

This study presents a model to predict fate of resuspended sediment in the development of deep-sea mineral resources including manganese nodules under Clarion-Clipperton area of the Pacific Ocean. The manganese nodules are expected to be developed near future and major research is undergoing in Korea recently concerning many aspects of the mineral resources development. One aspect is about environmental concern related to the deep-sea development, and a major environmental problem is the resuspended deep-sea sediment. In order to quantitatively analyze the resuspended sediment in the water column during the deep-sea development, particle size distribution (PSD) was considered an important factor in this research. The model developed here includes PSD and coagulation process, as well as sedimentation process. The model is one dimensional in the vertical profile, and was designed to describe the change of particle size distribution in the water column in the given vertical point. Based on the mathematical modeling, a numerical model was developed. Using the model, basic simulation was performed under representative environmental setting of the deep-sea environment. The simulation showed the dynamics of change of particle size distribution for 50 m depth of water column from the deep-sea bed, up to 10 days of simulation time. The simulation results indicate that coagulation seemed an important factor in the fate of resuspended deep-sea sediment. As a result, this research shows that the particle size distribution approach, as well as considering the coagulation process, is needed and may be effectively applied to environmental impact analysis of deep-sea resuspended sediment. Dredging tends to be either horizontal or vertical. In each case solids have to be disengaged from the deposit, mobilized, acquired and elevated or translated. One means of elevation is the airlift. Elevation and translation of essentially granular material nay be by jet pump or centrifugal pump. Any of the three types may be used on its own. The airlift and jet pump may he combined for vertical transport and the centrifugal and jet pumps for predominantly horizontal. Both suction point and pipework must have a means of deployment from the surface or from a submerged vehicle or merely a diver. An airlift is an energetic system, having a source of energy and a means of storing it. It therefore will be difficult to prevent oscillation -surging. A centrifugal pump has a characteristic that bends over at low flow rate and is therefore intrinsically unsuitable for pumping solids. The result is blockage, operation at high velocity and correspondingly high wear rates or operation at low concentration of solids and correspondingly low efficiency. The jet pump is intrinsically exceptionally stable but has a low hydraulic efficiency. The jet pump-airlift hybrid prevents or reduces surging and increases system efficiency away from the optimum depth for airlift operation. Delivered solids concentration is increased. The jet pump-centrifugal pump hybrid totally prevents pipeline blockages and increases the productivity from a given pipeline size. For a given energy input the average production is typically doubled. For example, the Indian River Delaware bypassing pipeline transmits an overall day-in-day-out average of 500t/h (tonnes) of sand down a 10.86" diameter line.

Prospectivity modeling of seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits has been completed over the Kermadec Arc-Colville Ridge area using the GIS based weights of evidence and fuzzy logic modeling techniques. SMS deposits are the current equivalent of ancient onshore volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) ore deposits. These high-grade deposits are formed on the seafloor and commonly consist of a black smoker and metal rich sediment mound complex resulting from the discharge of hydrothermal fluids (up to 400°C) from fractures on the seafloor. Metal sulphides are continuously precipitated in response to mixing of high-temperature hydrothermal fluids with ambient seawater. Accumulation of metal sulphides has led to SMS deposits being potentially major sources of copper, zinc, lead and other metals such as gold, silver, which to date remain untapped. Modeling of SMS deposits was undertaken to illustrate the power of GIS modeling for seafloor resource evaluation and how it can be used to quickly identify and rank in terms of the most likely prospective areas of the seafloor where new SMS deposits might exist. The mineral deposit modeling was constrained by the mineral systems concept which defines those parts of a mineralisation system that are critical to the ore-forming process. The deposits are typically formed in extensional tectonic settings, including both submerged tectonic margins and sea-floor spreading. Volcanic vent systems and underlying dykes, stocks and sills are the sources of heat that are responsible for converting sea water drawn down through fractures in the oceanic crust into an ore-forming hydrothermal fluid. This fluid is then capable of leaching metals and elements from surrounding footwall rocks, which are then transported upwards via the convection of hydrothermal fluids. The ore materials are then precipitated within the black smoker field as massive sulphides due to the mixing of high-temperature (250-400°C), metal-rich hydrothermal fluids with cold (about 2°C) oxygen bearing seawater.

Exploring for minerals on the seabed is challenging and expensive – and the ability to collect representative sub surface samples is essential. The research project MarMine led by NTNU has together with Seattle based Williamson and Associates developed and tested an ROV-based drill rig for mineral (seafloor massive sulfides and crusts) and rock sampling. The ROCS system is a single stroke drill and is simple, robust and possible to use from various larger ROVs. For the vehicle to provide a stable platform, the vertical bollard pull of the ROV and the vehicle mass are important variables. The developed drill uses a thin wall drill bit and barrel and operates at high RPM to reduce the required down weight and drilling moments. The system also contains an emergency release to be used if the core barrel is stuck. The drill is hydraulically powered with cylinders operating the tower and a rotation unit. It can rapidly be modified to provide samples from softer samples like unconsolidated material. At the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge, a work class ROV was deployed with the drill mounted for testing at 2700 m depth in basalt rock. The recovery from the system was above 80%. Such core samples can be used for chemical analyses of metal and mineral grades, mineralogy and rock mechanical testing. The system provides a probing tool for marine mineral exploration, with low cost, low operational complexity and low risk. Proper resource estimation requires drilling deeper into the deposit, but the short core samples provided by the ROCS provide valuable a priori information planning for more extensive drilling campaigns.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) which contain Au, Ag, Cu, Zn, and Pb have been interested in as a target of commercial mining these 15 years. Japan has large potential of SMS and a national R&D project for the mining has been active these 5 years. However, the economy of SMS mining is very bad, because the waste tailing disposal cost is very expensive in Japan. A slurry flushing method is experimentally examined in this study for the improvement of the economy. During the flushing, because of density difference between the metal-rich ore and the waste rock, a kind of gravity separation is possible. The results suggest a possibility of the actual application.

Deep-sea rare-earth element-rich mud (REE Mud) distributes in pelagic clayey sediment column on ocean seafloor at 4,000-6,000 m deep. The thickness ranges 5-80 m and the burial depth 0-100 m. The REE content ranges 600-2,250 ppm in Pacific and one of the richest, maximum 6,500ppm, has been found in Marcus Is. exclusive economic zone. By applying a conventional hydraulic excavation and lifting methods, the economy of REE Mud mining around Marcus Is. is preliminary examined. Because the waste content in REE Mud is high and the disposal cost in Japan is very expensive, the mining is recognized far away from economy.

IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).

From an interesting and intriguing scientific research topic, deep sea mining has altered into an interesting mining prospect over the last years. Ten years ago most of the focus was on geological investigations, searching for typical deep sea deposits and getting answers on where we can find them and how these deposits were formed. At this moment we know much more about the interesting deposit possibilities and with our quest for minerals, metals and other materials to feed global economic growth, answers as to the technical and economic feasibility to mine these deposits are sought. This is not a new phenomenon as we already witnessed such question late 1970?s and early 1980?s. Most of the focus was on mining manganese nodules and brines in the Red Sea driven by the report of the Club of Rome that predicted shortages in near future at that time. Development went different, but later in the 1990?s a rival of interest could be noticed for mining deep sea deposits.

Brothers volcano (34°51.7?S, 179°03.6?E) is a large caldera volcano that forms part of the active Kermadec arc south of 32° S, NE of New Zealand. It is an elongate edifice striking NW-SE that is ~11-13 km long by 7-8 km across. The caldera has a basal diameter of 3-3.5 km and is surrounded by 350-450 m high walls with the floor 1,850 m deep. A volcanic cone of dacite composition rises 350 m from the caldera floor and partially coalesces with the southern caldera wall. Much of the caldera construction and the location of the hydrothermal vent sites are controlled by intersecting basement structures. Three hydrothermal sites have been recognized at Brothers; NW caldera, SE caldera and cone. Multiple hydrothermal plumes were mapped from the bottom of the caldera upwards to a depth of 900 m and originate from two of the sites; one on the NW caldera wall the other atop the cone. Analyses of these plumes show that the two vent sites are chemically distinct. The cone site itself hosts three distinct vent fields (summit, upper flank, NE flank) that in 1999 had plumes (mainly from the summit) containing relatively high concentrations of gas with a shift of -0.27 pH units (proxy for CO2) and H2S concentrations up to 4,250 nM, particulate Cu (PCu) of 3.4 nM, total dissolvable Fe (TDFe) of 4,720 nM, TDMn up to 260 nM and Fe/Mn values between 4.4 and 18.2. However, in 2002 plumes from the summit vent field had noticeably lower concentrations of PCu (0.3 nM), TDFe (175 nM), and Fe/Mn values of 0.8, although similar TDMn (220 nM) and shift in pH (-0.22) suggesting a state of flux for this site. By contrast, plumes originating from the NW caldera site have much less gas with a pH shift of -0.09 units and no detectable H2S, TDFe up to 955 nM, TDMn up to 150 nM, and Fe/Mn values of 6.4, and have not changed their composition over the same three year interval indicating a more chronic hydrothermal system. Plume d3He results show helium is decoupled from more near-surface vent fluid sources although a shift in R/Ra values from 6.1 ± 0.5 in 1999 for the combined vent sites to 7.2 ± 0.1 in 2002 indicates a less radiogenic input of helium over three years, suggestive of a greater magmatic input to the system.

A unique concept for a self-cleaning filter system has been designed and constructed which utilizes acoustic energy, coupled hydraulically with a subject liquid media, and a fine mesh screen to perform the following: 1. separation of solid suspended particles from a host liquid through the breakdown of surface tension; 2. enhanced filtration of liquid fraction from the solids fraction to specified limits, retaining a specified size range of solids, and; 3. continuous cleaning of screen, preventing screen blinding and promoting a continuous filtration process. The concept is the product of a cooperative program between the Marine Minerals Technology Center, Continental Shelf Division, and the Moscow State Mining University. The physical principals involved in the separation, filtration, and screen cleaning processes primarily relate to the characteristics and properties of the applied acoustic energy and the influence of this energy on the solids/liquid mixture. The acoustic energy introduced to, and acting on and throughout, the whole volume of the solids/liquid mixture, within the vessel body at any given time induces hydraulic pressure waves, which may be further described in simplest form as positive and negative semiperiods (which may or may not be equal in amplitude or period) of the basic wave forms. The processes involved may be considered in two phases. The first phase relates to the process of separation in which the acoustically induced force of acceleration manifests as vibro-agitation (thresh- old of cavitation) and possibly cavitation is the primary factor in the breakdown of surface tension between the solid particles and suspending liquid; i.e. water. In the case of compressible organic solids, the separation of liquid by squeezing may also be a factor.

The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele's Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele's Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele's Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele's Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. Six active Kermadec Arc submarine volcanoes located between 34°S and 36°30?S were mapped and sampled by an interdisciplinary inter-institutional research team between April and July 2005 using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mother ship the RV Kai?mikai-O-Kanaloa. The purpose of the expedition was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, plume production and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial poly-metallic sulphide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of 1700 meters within the base of the northern wall of the summit caldera of Brothers Volcano has produced a field of chimneys, some of them 5 metres high with black smokers venting. Temperatures of 300°C were measured within the active vents. Clark Volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 metres. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with 5-meter high venting chimneys and smaller structures around the periphery. Water temperatures of 200°C. Geochemical and petrological analysis of the massive poly-metallic sulphide samples taken from Brothers and Clark show a diversity of mineralogy. This diversity is clearly a function of hydrothermal water temperature. Chimneys sampled from Brothers are pyrite and sphalerite dominant with lesser chalcopyrite. Sulphides from Clark Volcano tend to be barite rich with lesser sphalerite and pyrite. Sulphides from Brothers Volcano have a range in gold composition of 4 to 58 ppb with silver composition of up to 38 ppb. A mineral formation model for the volcanoes suggests hydrothermal fluid boiling within the volcanic edifice for those volcanoes with shallow summits and massive sulphide deposition with the edifice as well. Surficial deposits include native sulphur and lower temperature oxides. Only the deeper water Brothers Volcano shows massive sulphide deposition along the marginal faults of the caldera floor.

The seafloor occurrences of KODOS ferromanganese nodules can be classified into four facies based on the morphological types of nodules recovered and seafloor photographs. Facies A, B, and C are relatively unimodal whereas Facies D is bimodal in the size distribution of nodules. Both Facies A and B are highly covered by sediments, but Facies B is higher than facies A in nodule density. Facies C has a high density of small nodules and many traces of bioactivity. Facies D is irregular in nodule density, but occurs close to basement near scarps (Fig. 1). The transparent layer (TL) on subbottom profile records (von Stackelberg et al., 1987) is composed of three sedimentary units, which in cores are distinguished by color. The uppermost Unit I is postulated to be deposited during the past 0.21 Ma and the middle Unit II between 0.42 Ma and 0.21 Ma (MOMAF, 1997). There exists a hiatus between Unit II and Unit III. Unit III was deposited from 3.5 Ma to 1.5 Ma as determined by 10Be/9Be and/or 87Sr/86Sr dating (MOMAF, 2004). Internal textures observed on cut sections of nodules suggest four stages of nodule formation (Choi et al., 2000). The nuclei are either unbroken old nodules probably of hydrogenetic growth (1h and 2h) in Facies A and C, or nodule fragments probably of early diagenetic growth (2d) in Facies D, whereas there are both types in Facies B. The layers surrounding the hydrogenetic nodule nuclei are of hydrogenetic growth (3h and/or 4h) in Facies C, and are of early diagenetic growth (3d and/or 4d) in Facies A, B, and D. The layers surrounding the early diagenetic nodule fragments are mostly of early diagenetic growth (3d and 4d) in Facies A, B, and D. But hydrogenetic encrustations are also found as surface layers on the top in Facies B (Fig. 2).

The beach at the resort city of Virginia Beach, Virginia has been and increasingly will be dependent upon artificial nourishment for maintenance and for hurricane protection. Both existing base-level maintenance operations and planned substantial enhancement programs out strip the capabilities of traditional terrestrial resources to provide the required quantities of sand. Our research program, an amalgam of projects from several funding sources, has located and defined suitable quantities of beach quality sand for use on the city's beaches. The work also has furthered our understanding of the region's Quaternary history. Initially, reconnaissance level, high-resolution, sub-bottom profiles and surficial grab samples taken on the basis of sub- marine geomorphology identified two geographically and geologically separate areas worthy of further exploration. Further profiling supplemented with some cores further defined the potential sand reserves. The Sandbridge Shoal site is a large and discrete Holocene sandbody atop late Pleistocene strata. The sands in region offshore of the commercial area known as the Resort Strip appear to be recent fill within fluvial(?) channels cut into the older subsurface. Each of these resources is within roughly 5 km of major sites targeted for beach nourishment and/or hurricane protection and contains sand with appropriate geotechnical properties. Ongoing work will better define the dimensions and limits of the sand bodies and provide data to enable determinations to be made concerning exploitation. Ultimately decisions concerning the overall beach enhancement-hurricane protection projects will involve economic, environmental, technical, and social considerations.
