"Molybdenum is widely used in the industries as an alloying element in the manufacture of steels and super alloys. The widespread use of the element encourages a growing need to develop extraction processes for recovery from both primary and secondary sources. The Solvay Group has developed a solvent extraction reagent named CYANEX®600 for the recovery of molybdenum from acidic solutions originating from both low grade (e.g. copper solvent extraction raffinates, smelter dusts and slags) and high grade (molybdenite) molybdenum sources. CYANEX®600 is a purified form of CYANEX®272 with the active component bis(2,4,4- trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid. The extraction behavior of CYANEX®600 towards molybdenum in sulphuric acid medium was evaluated. The uptake of molybdenum increased with the increase in concentration of CYANEX®600. The approximate stoichiometry of the extracted complex was: Mo: CYANEX®600 = 1:2. Efficient back-extraction could be achieved with 0.1 M disodium EDTA and 0.1 M (NH4)2CO3, thus providing the option of recyclability of the extractant. The detailed back-extraction studies are currently under progress to find out the possible option for complete transfer of Mo(VI) to the aqueous phase so that high purity Mo salts could be precipitated from the molybdate solutions.INTRODUCTION Molybdenum (Mo) is one of the world’s valuable metals and is highly sought after by researchers due to its versatile mechanical, thermal, chemical properties. Swedish scientist Carl Wilhelm Scheele demonstrated molybdenite to be a mineral sulfide in 1778. Peter Hjelm successfully isolated dark metal powder from the mineral sulphide and named it as ‘Molybdenum’ in 1782 (Gupta, 1992). Molybdenum is a refractory metal of silver gray appearance and is an important alloying element used in the manufacture of steels and super alloys. Molybdenum compounds are widely used in formulation of catalysts (Gupta, 1992). Molybdenum occurs in nature only in chemical combination with other elements. Several molybdenum bearing minerals have been identified, but the only one of commercial significance is molybdenite (MoS2). As molybdenum is a strategic metal for the industrial sector, its widespread use acts as a factor for depletion of the natural resources. Hence, there is growing need to develop extraction procedures for its recovery from both primary and secondary sources. "Nickelhütte Aue GmbH is specialized in the recycling of waste materials containing non-ferrous metals. We treat nickel, copper, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum and precious metal containing materials like spent catalysts, ashes, dusts, grindings, liquids, slurries and sludge's as long as they contain one or a combination of the above mentioned metals. In our pyrometallurgical works we produce non-ferrous metal concentrates suitable for further treatment in our hydrometallurgical plant where we refine Ni-, Cu-, Co- and V-chemicals. Our production is based on synergy effects due to the combination of pyro- and hydro-metallurgy. As an example we can mention our heat recovery system and internal recycling of by-products. "The Adanac molybdenum porphyry deposit near Atlin, in northwestern British Columbia, was discovered in 1905. It was explored extensively between 1967 and 1980.The deposit is within a complex, multi-phase, quartz monzonite stock that is a satellite of the post-accretionary, Surprise Lake Batholith. Biotite K-Ar dates range from 703 ± 2.4 Ma to 71.6 ± 2.1 Ma, indicating a Late Cretaceous age of emplacement.The deposit comprises an irregular-shaped ring or halo peripheral to a quartz monzonite porphyry dome, or ""cupola': The shape of the ring, and of a smal~ fine-grained quartz monzonite intrusion, and the presence of higher-grade mineralimtion on the eastern flank of the cupola, suggest partial control by a preminera/ structure. The deposit is truncated by a steep, northwesterly dipping, normal fault (Adera Fault) that down-dropped the northern half of the deposit by a minimum of 100 mThe deposit lacks strong zonal alteration but there are narrow envelopes of potassic alteration around some veins and local zones of intense wall-rock silicification. There is considerable retrograde alteration along postminera/ faults and fractures.Molybdenite occurs in veins and fractures, many of which are relatively flat-lying. They occur in all phases of quartz monzonite. Molybdenum is the only element of economic significance. There are vein and skarn occurrences with tungsten, tin, lead, zinc and precious metals peripheral to the deposit.In 1981, Placer Development Limited reported an ""undiluted mineable mineral reserve"" of 151 971 000 tonnes grading 0.063% Mo at a cutoff grade of 0.04% Mo and a strip ratio of 1.5:1."

Both crystalline and sedimentary rocks are being considered to host a deep geological repository (DGR) for nuclear fuel waste in Canada. In the past several decades, considerable research has been conducted around the world to better understand geomechanical processes associated with development and long-term performance of a DGR. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization?s (NWMO?s) technical research and development program is examining a number of potentially suitable rock formations to support implementation of Adaptive Phased Management, Canada?s approach for long-term management of nuclear fuel waste. Rock engineering will play an important role in siting, design, and construction of a DGR for nuclear fuel waste. Post-construction activities such as excavation maintenance, monitoring, decommissioning, and closure will also involve rock engineering. The type of host rock selected for a DGR will influence the scope of rock engineering activities and related research requirements. This paper outlines key rock engineering aspects to be considered in developing a DGR in sedimentary rock.

"Precious metals cannot easily be recovered from tellurides by the standard cyanidation process. This work assesses the cyanidation of synthetic samples of precious metals tellurides and explores some alternatives for the leaching of these species (i.e. cyanidation in presence of lead nitrate and thiosulfate leaching). For this purpose, three chemical systems were studied: (1) cyanidation of silver telluride and the effect of lead (II) nitrate addition, (2) cyanidation at high alkalinity and high cyanide concentration of a gold-gold telluride sample containing tellurium and tellurium dioxide, and (3) thiosulfate leaching of silver telluride employing cupric sulfate as oxidant and EDTA as complexing agent for copper. Results showed that standard cyanidation dissolves 10.5% of silver from silver telluride in six hours, while with the addition of 100 mg/L lead increased the silver dissolution up to 100% in the same time. The standard cyanidation of the gold-gold telluride sample dissolves only metallic gold in six hours, while when cyanide concentration and pH were increased, gold and gold telluride were simultaneously dissolved. Finally, thiosulfate leaching dissolves 43.1% of silver from silver telluride in six hours.INTRODUCTION Precious metals tellurides are classified as refractory ores due to the difficulties associated with processing them by the standard cyanidation method. The increasing presence of gold/silver tellurides in some deposits around the world, specifically in Sonora, Mexico, requires new approaches to the cyanidation process, or the development of new leaching techniques. Treatments have been proposed for the recovery of gold and silver from their tellurides, including roasting, preoxidation, cyanidation with lead nitrate, and the use of leaching agents other than cyanide (Zhang, et al., 2010; Ellis and Deschenes, 2016). This work presents preliminary results of three options to recover precious metals from pure tellurides: the cyanidation of gold telluride at high cyanide concentration and high alkalinity, the addition of lead nitrate to the standard cyanidation process, and the use of sodium thiosulfate as leaching reagent."

"The high copper demand as well as the lack of new high-grade deposits, are pushing the copper industry to process low-grade and refractory ores containing chalcopyrite. However, for a quantitative dissolution of copper from the chalcopyrite, the leaching performances still need to be improved. In the present research, we studied and optimized the iodide-assisted leaching of chalcopyrite in H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3 media. The evolution of surface species during leaching was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Inductively-coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the dissolved copper. Significance of experimental results was assessed by statistical analysis while a kinetic analysis of the leaching process was performed by fitting the experimental data with the Shrinking-core model. Results showed the significant positive effect of iodide on copper extraction rate. In the presence of KI, the dissolution rate of copper was almost double than in the parallel experiments without KI. Whether using KI or not, elemental sulfur was generated on the surface of the leached chalcopyrite. Nevertheless, in the presence of KI, the passivation layer did not arrest the leaching. Analysis revealed that the leaching rate was limited by the chemical reaction control step.INTRODUCTION Due to the large demand of copper, processing low-grade ores containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) has become unavoidable (Watling, 2013). Since ores with CuFeS2 may also contain appreciable amounts of arsenic that cannot be smelted, and because low-grade ores are uneconomic to smelt, the hydrometallurgical technologies are crucial for recovering the copper (Dutrizac, 1978). Sulfate-based processes are attractive because of the lower operating costs and because the sulfate ion is more suitable in case copper would be recovered via electrowinning. In ferric sulfate solution, chalcopyrite undergoes oxidation due to the large amount of Fe(III) and dissolution due to the presence of the sulfate ion (Majima, et al., 1985). This paper presents an evaluation of underground-to-surface haulage options for a relatively large deposit. Specifically, it presents a recommended haulage option to provide the greatest value to the Project. Options considered included conventional truck, trolley-truck, conveying and shaft hoisting. The work was done at the level of a preliminary assessment as input to an internal pre-feasibility study. The Base Case for the analysis in this study was a Long Hole Open Stoping option (LHOS) using conventional truck haulage. Two scenarios were considered for the evaluation and included: 1. The current resource to ~700 m depth. 2. An expanded resource to ~825 m depth. The haulage options evaluated included three trucking options, three conveyor options and two shaft options. The paper presents the results from evaluating these options within the two mining scenarios using a Discounted Project Cost (DPC) comparison. Recommendations are made for the options that will provide the greatest overall value to the project.

The surface deformations induced by reservoir dilations can be measured using tiltmeters and these measurements can be used to infer reservoir level volume changes by solving an inverse problem. Preferred approach to solve such an inverse problem is to consider more tiltmeter measurements than the number of unknown variables considered in the inverse problem. However, sufficient number of measurement points is not always available due to economical and practical issues. This paper proposes a new approach to circumvent this problem. The new approach entails generation of pseudo surface deformation data by curve fitting tiltmeter measurements using a mathematical function, which delineates three-dimensional characteristics of surface deformation profiles. Then a three-dimensional inverse problem is solved using pseudo surface deformation data. This method is useful in inferring reservoir volume changes with high areal resolution when the number of available measurements is not sufficient to acquire the desired areal resolution.

Aluminum alloys are frequently grain refined during solidification in order to promote the formation of an equiaxed grain structure in the casting. The application of Ti-based grain refiners and/or Ti containing master alloys for improving mechanical properties may result in formation of Al-Ti based intermetallics. Although the grain refinement produces many desirable qualities in aluminum castings such as improved castability and mechanical properties, the addition of Ti to Al-Si foundry alloys may lead to the formation of some undesirable intermetallic particles such as AlTiSi and cause a number of operational problems such as nozzle blockage due to segregation and agglomeration of aluminide particles within the nozzle. There are several questions to be clarified when minor amount of Ti is added to Al-Si alloys. They include nucleation and growth of AlTiSi particles, their morphologies and orientation relationships with aluminum matrix and the dissolution of these intermetallics during the course of solidification and/or post solidification treatments. The current study was initiated to study the process and possible mechanism of aluminide dissolution and the related phenomena such as segregation and agglomeration. It reports the results found during reheating of laboratory prepared Ti-added A356 alloy at three temperature ranges of below solidus, mushy zone and above liquidus.

The business objectives of a metallurgical project determine targets and constraints, such as the range of products, production capacities, in-service dates, and capital and operating cost parameters. Permitting is usually left to the project team, as are decisions regarding site location, technology, and construction approach. Success requires an orderly methodology, represented in this book by front end loading (FEL) phases: FEL1 examines several alternative approaches; FEL2 ranks and eliminates less economically or technically attractive options; and FEL3 develops the preferred option to the point of major permit completion, with defined scope, schedule, and cost to submit for approval to proceed with implementation in FEL4. Working through FEL1, FEL2, and FEL3, the project definition improves, estimates become more accurate, and project risks are reduced. The project design basis at the end of FEL3 is the control document for project implementation in FEL4.

The mining industry represents a significant investment in infrastructure of which steel plays a key role. Many structures in a mine are made of steel including shaft structures (buntons, station steelwork and headgear); stope structures (roof supports, pipe hangers); haulageway structures (ore transfer stations, electrical stubbies); and surface structures (plant buildings, tank supports, pipe gantries, conveyor belts, stacks, stockpile structures, stairways and railings). Maintenance of structural components can often be difficult because of the environment, including those where corrosive fumes persist, or limited access, such as in shafts where access is limited, or to short maintenance shifts or where limited working space is available. Thus a cost-efficient, long-lasting and maintenance-free protection system for steel should be specified. Galvanizing provides the required high-quality, long-term corrosion protection to steel. Galvanizing provides protection in two ways, first as a physical barrier to corrosion and secondly by means of cathodic or sacrificial protection that is unique to zinc. The dual nature of corrosion protection provided by galvanizing significantly extends the service life of steel even in the most challenging environments. The unique corrosion protection properties provided by galvanized steel will be highlighted with global mining application case studies.

We have been in business 129 years and like most of the coal mining companies in the United States, since 1969 the majority of our safety improvement efforts had been driven by compliance with the various versions of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act and the supporting federal regulations. In 2004 Peabody Energy management came to the understanding that in order to achieve our goal of zero incidents, that focus must change. This paper will describe the elements of the journey we began at that point to make the transition to a behavior and systems-based approach to safety management and our efforts to win the minds and hearts of our employees. This journey is undertaken with the goal of making safety truly a way of life for all Peabody Energy employees.

"The February 18, 1987, Federal Budget contains a proposed amendment which would simplify somewhat the ""successor corporation"" rules in the Income Tax Act. Despite this amendment, though, the important successor rules will continue to be relatively complex.IntroductionThe February 18, 1987, Federal Budget papers propose an income tax amendment whereby the so-called ""successor corporation"" rules would be revised by removing the present provision which limits the application of these rules to a maximum of two ""successions"". The successor corporation rules represent one of the most complicated sets of rules in the Income Tax Act. This month, Tax Notes seeks to explain these rules and the proposed amendment in simplified terms.Basically, the successor rules provide a mechanism for transferring unused exploration and development expenses from one taxpayer to another , in specified circumstances. The aforementioned limitation of two successions refers to the rule which allows a maximum of two such transfers with respect to any particular pool of deductions."

The Curtin University Gold Technology Group has been involved in surveying, modelling and optimisation of batch centrifugal concentrator type gravity circuits and CIP/CIL circuits for nearly two decades. The most commonly asked question regarding gravity recovery is, “What is the benefit of a gravity circuit”, which can be hard, if not impossible, to quantify. With the help of the AMIRA P420 Project’s Integrated Liberation Leach Model (ILLM) it is now possible to evaluate the effect of gravity recovery on total gold recovery when changes are made to the grind size, gravity and/or leach/adsorption circuits. This paper demonstrates how the ILLM can be used to determine the net benefit of introducing or modifying a gravity circuit and assess the effect of operating conditions (grind size, coarse gold size distribution, leach residence time, carbon activity, etc.) on plant performance.

"IntroductionCALEY (1945) and Evans (1950) pointed out that certain instances of convergence between Devonian and Silurian horizons, frequently evident in wells drilled for oil and gas in Ontario, appear to be related to local thinning of salt beds in the Salina formation and they suggested that leaching of the salt beds may have occurred. Exploratory drilling by Imperial Oil Limited since 1945 has brought to light several examples of structures similar to those discussed by Caley and Evans. The writer has had the opportunity to examine cuttings and data from wells which penetrated these structures and the attempt to interpret them in the light of the theory of leaching and subsidence proposed by Landes ( 1945a) to explain the marked brecciation and deformation of Upper Silurian and Middle Devonian sediments which crop out in the Mackinac Straits region of northern Michigan has led to the observations presented in this paper."

This study examined the effects of pH and sulphate concentration on the surface charge and stability of alumina and pyrite dispersions. The relationship between these properties was investigated using measurements of electrophoretic mobility and settling velocity. The maximum aggregation for both minerals was observed near the iso-electric point (iep) where the force of repulsion is at a minimum. Aggregation decreased at pH values away from the iep, where an increased surface charge causes electrostatic repulsion between particles. Zeta potential data revealed that sulphate ions were adsorbed only on positively charged surfaces for both minerals. Adsorption of sulphates on the alumina surface increased aggregation by reducing the surface charge from >+25 mV to close to zero. These results indicate an electrostatic bonding of sulphate ions to alumina surface. Preliminary results on the interaction of pyrite and sulphate ions indicate a similar response.

Empirical and phenomenological models of SAG and AG mills have dominated the scene for the last few decades, being used nearly every time a mill is scale-up or an attempt is made to improve its performance. However, in spite of their success, these models fail to describe the details of both the grinding environment and the breakage mechanisms. The result is a generally good track record, with a few – but very important – instances when these models fall short in their predictions, which can be very costly. Further, nearly all of these models require detailed calibration to industrial and pilot plant data, being costly in their application, although still with limited predictive capabilities. Recognizing these challenges, a new model framework has been proposed which overcomes the limitations of currently used models by coupling the microscale population balance model, the discrete element model and functions that describe internal classification at the mill grate. This model framework has already been applied to describe breakage in ball mills, with showing very promising results. However, in the case of SAG and AG mills a much greater level of complexity is involved in the model, given the interaction between the mechanical environment that is formed totally or, in part, by the ore itself, and the breakage response in the mill. The paper describes the model framework, demonstrating how it can address appropriately effects such as mill speed, mill filling and size distribution, on the response from the mill. Some of the advantages of the model are related to its intrinsic multi-component and dynamic nature, which allows simulating appropriately mixtures of ores of different competences in a transient manner.

Luscar Stereo commenced construction of the mine at Coal Valley, Alberta, in August, 1976. It is designed to produce approximately 2.5 million clean short tons of steam coal annually - 2.0 million tons per year being committed to Ontario Hydro and 0.5 million tons per year being committed to Neptune Terminals for sale on the export market. The project involves constructing a heavy-media coal preparation plant, erecting a 42-cubic-yard dragline, constructing a shop/office complex, and developing three surface mining zones and associated facilities. As there were no existing facilities in the Coal Valley area, it was necessary to establish access roads, an airstrip, temporary utilities, fuel supplies, a construction camp, rail upgrading and communication services.

On line monitoring and diagnosis systems of process operating performance are becoming an important part of industrial programs, leading to improve process operation and therefore product quality over time. In processes, such as the contact section of a sulphuric acid plant, a large number of input variables, highly correlated, are presented. These characteristics usually pose more difficulties in modelling the process for monitoring and diagnosis purposes. Multivariate statistical projection methods, such as Main Component Analysis, have been proposed to effectively deal with these situations. The application of these ideas to a section of a 2350 MTD sulphuric acid plant, located at the Caletones Smelter, including dry tower, gas blowers, catalytic reactor and S03 absorber processes, is discussed here. A PCA model with eight main components is used for monitoring and diagnosis of more than seventy operating variables. Hottelling's T2 and Q residuals test were used for detecting measurement problems in relevant variables, and for identifying which set of variables were responsible for driving the process outside its normal operating region. Furthermore, considerable information for the correction of the tested operating problems was given by the use of these techniques.
