"Understanding a single breakage mechanism is fundamental to the development of breakage testing techniques appropriate for mechanistic modelling of any breakage equipment. In the light of this insight, it is also possible to compare any two breakage events in a mechanistic manner. This paper presents a new method to compare breakage mechanisms of two-point impact with compression, different in their applied strain rates. This approach regards a single breakage event as a process affected by three sub-processes; first fracture, capture and spatial distribution of fragments. Spatial distribution is influenced by the kinetic energy of fragments and their brittleness. Using this methodology allows us to examine how each sub-process is influenced by applied strain rate and its impacts on progeny size distribution. For this purpose, two rock types of widely different strength, magnetite and silicate, were tested at various energy levels using the impact and compression mechanisms. To isolate the effect of spatial distribution of fragments, particles were forced to remain in the breakage zone. In this condition, similar progenies were generated from compression and impact mechanisms at similar energy levels. However, allowing natural distribution of fragments, coarser progeny was produced from compression of silicate. Additionally, using this approach provides a physical meaning and explanation for rock strength parameters such as A×b in the t10-Ecs relationship. INTRODUCTIONComminution models are rapidly progressing toward a destination that enables us to explain the complete physics of a breakage process as well as the properties of the ores. Eventually, they will be able to take into consideration the micro-events that take place during the comminution process (Bourgeois and Banini, 2002). Thus, considerable efforts have been made in the last few years in the area of ore breakage characterisation to comprehend and unlock a single breakage process that has been treated as a black box event in the majority of conventional methods. In this paper, an attempt is made to explain the effect of applied strain rate on the breakage properties of rock by using the knowledge that has been gained by understanding a breakage event. This is particularly important due to its application for various comminution devices that operate within a relatively broad range of speed."

Scorodite is considered as a secondary mineral formed from the product of weathering of primary minerals by chemical or biological reactions. In the case of biological scorodite formation, microorganisms mimic and accelerate what in nature takes a very long time, i.e. biocrystallisation. The goal of the biological scorodite formation is to form very stable arsenic crystals suitable for long-term and safe disposal. The biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation, biocrystallisation, and proper bioreactor design to achieve the biological formation of scorodite crystals in one step. We have explored simultaneous biological arsenic and iron oxidation at 30ºC and at 70ºC leading to arsenic-jarosite phases and scorodite, respectively. As biologically formed scorodite crystals are very stable (TCLP < 1 mg/L As (V)), the risk of arsenic toxicity is minimized when leaching takes place. This process is suitable for arsenic concentrations above 0.5 g/l As achieving up to 20 mg/l As in the effluent. This biological scorodite formation system is a selfsufficient bio-oxidation system and therefore many new applications can be explored such as reprocessing of arsenic trioxide, orpiment or calcium arsenate to scorodite crystals for a stable and safe disposal.

"Given the severe scarcity of fresh water sources in Northern Chile the use of seawater has become the only alternative to allow mining expansion. This option however poses several technological challenges as a result of the high concentration of natural salts that promote various forms of metal corrosion. Therefore the steel piping protection has been a constant challenge for design engineers responsible for solving the problems of corrosion. Known protection alternatives are varied and expensive, a few of them are rubber coatings, protection based centrifuged concrete, extra wall thickness of pipes in combination with corrosion inhibitors, extra wall thickness of pipes without using corrosion inhibitors, and the use of highly corrosion resistant steel materials.In this framework the aim was to study the corrosion kinetics of carbon steel pipe API 5L X70 under electrochemical and weight loss testing. The test conditions include a range of seawater velocities between 0.2 to 3.0 m/s.For electrochemical experiments the API 5L X70 steel specimen was a 4 mm diameter disk embedded in an 8 mm diameter Teflon rod and exposed to seawater. Duplicated coupons were placed in a standard test apparatus that was built according to the standard ASTM D 2688 – 94.The main results were: a) corrosion mechanism explained in terms of the counterparts partial processes which are the hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction reaction; b) for the test specimen a corrosion band like feature that suggest a lateral dispersion of aggressive solutions from corrosion pits; c) a range of corrosion rates between 1 and 1.96 mm/year for flow rates between 0.2 and 3.0 m/s; and d) a convenient inhibitor dose between 20–25 mg/L for optimum inhibition efficiency to obtain a maximum value of 80% for corrosion efficiency."

The system of keeping geological plans and sections for the Geco Mine at Manitouwadge, Ontario, is described. Special methods employed to save draughting time with-out sacrificing accuracy, such as the extensive use of black line prints, are discussed. The uses made of the plans and sections by the mine planning engineers in their designs of stopes, and by the blast-hole engineer in ~is preparation of blast-hole layouts, are noted. An unusual scheme for portraying the distribution of .copper, zinc and silver values within the ore zone is de-scribed. The method of estimating the grade of ore to be "blasted in each ring of blast holes is outlined, as is the method of estimating the annual ore reserves. The design of an effective but simple transparent geo-logical and mine development model, used as a display for -visitors, is discussed. A large-scale model used for the study of problems in geological structure is also de-scribed.

"Arsenic contained in minerals sulphides such as enargite and tennantite can represent not only a significant penalty element in base metals production, but also a disadvantage to the environment through producing the toxic emissions to the atmosphere. The achieving separation of arsenic bearing minerals either at an early stage in floatation or from the floatation concentration is significantly beneficial to the economic. However, there was no feasible commercial method of separation at the flotation stage because of its similar flotation properties with many other copper sulphides. In this work, the selective floatation of enargite from copper sulphide concentrate containing maily covllite, chalcoctie, bornite and enargite was investigated. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.2%, Cu 22% and a high arsenic bulk concentrate with As 7.65%,Cu 33.65% were obtained. It was indicated that Ca(ClO)2 is the effective depressor and the optimum floatation condition was obtained. Most enargite could be floated at pH 11 and controlling the pulp potential at 290 mV SHE. Furthermore, the arsenic removal from the high arsenic bulk concentrate by hydrometallurgy methods was study. The results showed that the reaction temperature and the concentrations of NaOH were the most important variables affecting the rate of arsenic removal. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.24%, Cu 37.80% was obtained in the optimum leaching condition.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is mainly produced as a by-product of base metals smelting, in particular copper concentrate. China has imposed an upper limit of 0.50% arsenic for concentrates entering (Long et al., 2012). Arsenic amount of copper concentrate within 0.40% has also been imposed in China, and above which will be introduced about 50 RMB penalties per ton for each 0.10% increasing by smelters now. Therefore, it is necessary to remove arsenic from the copper concentrate.In copper concentrate, arsenic is mainly in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4) or tennantite (Cu12As4S13). There are two types of arsenic in the separation of copper and arsenic: arsenopyrite and arsenic bearing copper mineral. It is easier to separate arsenopyrite from the copper sulphide by flotation in comparsion with the separation of enargite or tennantite from non-arsenic copper minerals (Pineda et al., 2015). The main difficulty in the separation of arsenic copper mineral from non-arsenic copper sulphides is their extremely similar floatability, which depends on the fact that tennantite and enargite contain high copper content (Pineda et al., 2015)."

"As the demand of raw materials increases in a global scale due to demographic and economical changes, it is necessary to find technological solutions that improve current production processes in an efficient and sustainable manner. The main objective of this preliminary study is to evaluate the properties of foam produced with a cellulose-based molecule as an alterative to commercial frothing agents in flotation operations. There are two potential advantages identified with the use of cellulose-based additives for the proposed application: i) these chemicals can be produced from sustainable sources (i.e., non-edible crops), and ii) cellulose can be functionalized with chemical groups, in order to rationally modify its behaviour. In previous studies dealing with foam stabilization, it has been proposed that some functionalized cellulose species present a self-assembly mechanism at gas-liquid interfaces. Unlike typical surfactant-based frothers, cellulose molecules form networks around the bubbles that act as protective layers to the mechanical stress and to the occurrence of ionic species. This work studied the properties of foams produced in the presence of a partially hydroxylated cellulose molecule (i.e., hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC) under various concentrations in a laboratory-scale column. A comparison with a commercial surfactant frother (i.e., Nasfroth 240) is presented, and a rationalization of the behaviour of HPMC in terms of foam properties (i.e., surface tension, bubble size, foam depth) is proposed. INTRODUCTIONThe search for green alternatives to chemicals produced from non-renewable sources has become a topic of major relevance in industry (Choi et al., 2015). As a chemical consuming industry, the mining sector faces now the challenge of adopting new processing technologies and strategies in order to achieve the future demands of sustainability. "Normal sequence of operations to develop a new underground mine is: construct and outfit headframe for shaft sinking, sink shaft, construct and outfit shaft sump, develop shaft station and shaft bottom steel. In an effort to reduce the overall project schedule, an innovative plan was developed to install service shaft steel below station level, prior to the completion of the shaft sinking effort. To better evaluate the construction of this substantial steel tower, a preliminary constructability evaluation was conducted, including the best method of supporting the main tower; from the bottom, middle or top of the tower. The design criteria and plan involved: •,Develop access from existing service shaft, 25 km underground •,Use of materials to maximize strength while minimizing corrosion exposure •,Estimating the location of the shaft centerline •,Over excavating the station and shaft below station to allow future shaft steel repositioning •,Designing the tower steel for modular installation •,Incorporate commissioning considerations, such as suspension of the cheese weights during steel installation •,Provision for covered stair access to shaft bottom •,Enclosed shaft envelope with open panels to allow visibility and ventilation The design approach was innovative and this paper will describe the design principles and challenges encountered while providing insight into the solutions developed and implemented; especially the modular construction and installation methodology. INTRODUCTION In an effort to expand the mining operations, a plan was developed to construct a new service shaft closer to the new mine workings and convert the existing service shaft to a production shaft at the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS now Nutrien) Rocanville Potash mine in southeast Saskatchewan. The new service shaft required a multi roped friction hoist operating a cage / counterweight, rope guided conveyances to support the operational requirements. The service shaft is an integral part of the mining infrastructure as it provides access to the underground workings, transport personnel and materials underground for operation and maintenance of the mine. The shaft also allows for services required for safe operation of the underground mine, power supply, controls, communication, dewatering and fresh water supply."

A novel manufacturing technique for Al-TiB2 nanocomposites has been developed, in which TiB2 nanoparticles were incorporated into liquid aluminum under mechanical stirring and in the presence of a K2ZrF6 flux-wetting agent. The microstructure of the Al-TiB2 nanocomposites was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microhardness test was conducted to investigate the strengthening effect of TiB2 on the aluminum matrix. The TiB2 nanoparticles were successfully incorporated and dispersed into the aluminum melt in the presence of the K2ZrF6 flux during mechanical stirring. In the as-cast microstructure, most nanoparticles segregated in the interdendritic regions as a result of particle redistribution during solidification. The addition of 2, 5 and 10 wt% TiB2 nanoparticles increased the composite hardness by 60, 90 and 150% respectively when compared to commercial purity aluminum, indicating that the TiB2 nanoparticles imposed a significant strengthening effect on the aluminum matrix. The role of K2ZrF6 flux agent on the incorporation of nanoparticles into aluminum melt was discussed.

"The processing of lateritic saprolite in hyper-concentrated magnesium chloride brines offers several potential advantages for the hydrometallurgical production of nickel. An aggressive HCl-MgCl2 leach at atmospheric pressure can significantly reduce magnesium dissolution, and offers the ability to recover HCl and MgO by a less energy intensive process than conventional techniques via the formation of magnesium hydroxychlorides. Inevitably, the high chloride concentration renders iron fully soluble during leaching and thus requires subsequent iron control and disposal steps. Experimental measurements coupled with OLITM modeling were conducted to investigate the behaviour of iron in concentrated magnesium chloride brines, in terms of chemistry (nature of iron species) and solubility limits. The solubility of ferric chloride in magnesium chloride solutions of concentrations and temperatures relevant to this process was controlled by a previously unreported solid phase: 2.5FeCl3·MgCl2·7.5H2O. Iron precipitation tests on synthetic leach solutions without seeding indicate a metastable akaganeite precipitate which transitions to hematite upon equilibration. Magnesium chloride solubility in ferric chloride solutions was also investigated to allow the simulation of a ternary phase diagram for the MgCl2-FeCl3-H2O system, in order to determine process conditions that avoid unwanted chloride precipitation.INTRODUCTION In the search for more economical processes to treat lateritic saprolite for nickel production, chloride hydrometallurgy has been increasingly investigated. While High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) can frequently economically treat lateritic limonite, the presence of saprolite negatively affects process economics. The higher magnesium content of saprolite increases acid consumption, because magnesium sulphate, unlike iron and aluminum sulphates, does not hydrolyze in HPAL. This soluble magnesium decreases the sulphuric acid strength by an amount greater than the amount of acid stoichiometrically required to leach magnesium, which must also be disposed of or recovered (Jankovic, Papangelakis, & Lvov, 2009). Due to these issues, pyrometallurgy is most commonly employed to treat lateritic saprolite, via the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF) process; this process uses a rotary kiln to dry and partially reduce nickel and iron oxides before sending the calcine to an electric furnace for smelting to produce a ferronickel product for the stainless steel market. Although the problems encountered during hydrometallurgical processing are avoided and nickel recoveries are high, high capital and energy costs prevent the application of this process to lower grade lateritic saprolite deposits (De Bakker, 2011)."

"This paper presents the results of an investigation into the level of radon, as against the natural background, at the Vicary Creek coal mine in Alberta. The concentrations of radon and daughter products detected in the mine were considered to be insignificantly higher than the concentrations of naturally occurring radon and thus do not constitute a health hazard to the miners.INTRODUCTIONTHE HIGH INCIDENCE OF LUNG CANCER among miners exposed to radon was established some thirty years ago. The presence of this gas in mines is primarily associated with pitchblende extraction operations, al-though coal contains detectab`e quantities of U30s. A previous study bas shown that coal from southwestern Alberta (Exshaw and Banff) contains lower than average concentrations of this element (1).As part of a general investigation into the occupational health environment of coal miners in Alberta, field measurements were made to establish the level of radon and to investigate the natural background radiation in the Vicary Creek coal mine, located some 16 miles north of Coleman, Alberta, on the easternmost slopes of the Rocky Mountains."

"AbstractA polishing .technique is described together with two anodic etching methods for aluminum and its alloys. Some of the optical and structural characteristics of the film formed by •these etching methods are discussed and it is shown to what degree these properties of the film are related to the crystallographic orientation of the metallic substrate. Applications to the study of recrystallization and twinning phenomena and to the study of plastic deformation, banding, and texture estimation are discussed. Micrographs are shown .to illustrate the manner in which the technique is particularly well suited to the study of such phenomena.IntroductionThe physical metallurgist is constantly faced with the problem of polishing and etching of metallic sections. Mechanical polishing is tedious, time consuming, and not applicable whenever a surface entirely free from plastic deformation is required. Etchants are generally required to reveal the grain structure in order to determine its size, shape, and regularity, or to bring up constituents. In the case of aluminum, the .most common etchant to reveal grains is a mixture of three acids: HC1, HN03, and HF. This etchant is fairly satisfactory on certain alloys and for certain metallurgical conditions but in general fails to give a good definition of the grain on castings, on highly alloyed products, and whenever the grain is smaller than 100 microns in diameter. Besides size and shape, a grain, or crystal, has an orientation and may be endowed with several types of imperfections."

"Hydrotalcite is one kind of layered double hydroxides, and has special crystal chemical characteristics. Due to its good thermal stability, hydrotalcite used as the PVC heat stablier has attracted scientists’ attention. In this study, nano-hydrotalcite was synthesized by the method of mechanochemistry/crystallization, using brucite, Al(OH)3 and Na2CO3 as raw materials, and added into PVC to investigate the effect of hydrotalcite on thermal stability of composites. The synthesis mechanism was suggested by virtue of XRD, FE-SEM, FT-IR. It has been indicated that at the first of dry milling process, the parical sizes of brucite and Al(OH)3 decrease, while specific surface areas of them increase by the action of mechanical force, until produced amorphous particles. In the process of wet milling, metal ions in the amorphous body, which has high surface energy, can easily react with H2O, and produce the precursor of Mg6Al2(OH)18•4.5H2O, which has the same crystal structure as hydrotalcite. Under the hydrothermal condition, anions of OH- in the interlamination of precursor are exchanged by CO32- in the solution and nano-hydrotalcite is generated at last. The thermal stability was characterized by Congo red method. The results have revealed that hydrotalcite is one kind of long-term heat stabilizer, and residual stability time increase with the rise of added hydrotalcite amounts.INTRODUCTIONHydrotalcite, one kind of anionic clays, has been attracted a great interest for researchers because of their unexpected physical and chemical properties. The general formula is Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3·4H2O, where Mg2+ and Al3+ occupy octahedral positions in the brucite-like layers, and CO32- is an interlayer anion (Hoyo, 2007). Hydrotalcite is widely used in the fields of chemical engineering, materials engineering, environmental protection, medicine, and so forth, owing to its unique capability of adsorbability, ion exchange and thermal stability (Rozov, Berner, & Taviot-Gueho, 2010; Iwasaki, Yoshii, & Nakamura, 2012; Ay, Zümreoglu-Karan, & Temel, 2011; Cavani, Trifiro, & Vaccari, 1991; Li & Duan, 2005; Lin, Wang, & Evans, 2006). As a result, the study on synthesis and application of hydrotalcite has received considerable attentions."

"Ore reserves at Brunswick Mining and Smelting totalled 101(106) tonnes grading 97 grams tonne-1 silver at the end of 1981. Silver is recovered as a byproduct in the copper, lead and bulk concentrates and is lost to the zinc concentrate and plant tailings. Recovery of silver for the year 1981 was 58,5%. The loss of potential revenue is in excess of Cdn $50(106) year-1 at current silver prices and milling rates.Silver is known to occur in solid solution in galena and as tetrshedrite. Evidence indicating the identity and significance of a third silverbearing mineral assemblage is reviewed and the distribution of silver losses is detailed. Characteristics of each the carrier which may be responsible for observed distribution, including size, surface quality, liberation and composition are considered, and the third carrier is shown to have possible implications for improved silver recovery by other Canadian producers as well as by Brunswick Mining.Silver tetrahedrite tailings distributed tailings and losses occur as coarse, free and as very fine unliberated galena in losses of the third carrier are between the zinc concentrate and are concentrated in the finest size fractions. Process alternatives for enhanced silver recovery by physical and chemical means are reviewed."

"The operating cost of a gold mine employing granular activated carbon to recover gold can be greatly affected by the condition of in-circuit carbon and its attrition losses. To accurately identify and quantify carbon losses requires careful study. Carbon attrition in the mill can be attributed mainly to physical or mechanical breakage due to the transfer of carbon in the circuit and to carbon oxidation and thermal fracture occurring in the carbon reactivation kiln. Of the equipment involved in carbon transfer, the water powered eductors are the major cause of abrasion and should be replaced with pumps or alternate methods that can serve the purpose. This paper also reviews the impact of carbon stripping and washing on overall operations.IntroductionHolt-McDermott Mine operates a 1360 tonnes per day Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) mill to recover gold. The relatively high carbon consumption and high remaining gold values on carbon after stripping were viewed as a challenging project for research. Extensive metallurgical testwork was initiated to reduce these values. Figure 1 below indicates the carbon flowchart prior to any significant changes in the carbon handling procedures.Carbon consumption after commissioning which was as high as 10""/o of carbon eluted, has been brought down to less than 5%. "The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented; however, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolytes is critically necessary to produce high-quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary relative to their concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. The behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance are discussed.
