To extract uranium from low-grade, calcrete-hosted uranium (CHU) ore is challenging owing to the presence of carbonate and swelling clay gangue minerals that require an alkaline lixiviant to be used. Western Australia possesses ~75 000 U3O8 t in CHU resources. Improvements to alkaline leach extraction practices would improve the economic potential of these deposits.A column leach study of CHU ore was run for 105 days using an alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate lixiviant. The uranium content of the liquor plateaued after 75 days at ~275 mg U/L; the calculated maximum solution capacity was 800 mg U/L. Spiked peaks and troughs were seen in the data set beyond the 60th day, where concentrations ranged from 220 - 290 mg U/L, indicating possible cyclic uptake and loss of uranium from the solution.Pristine and leached ore samples were geochemically analysed and mineralogically characterised at high resolution using a field emission gun-electron probe micro-analyser (FEG-EPMA). Results showed that leached ore samples from the top of the column contained less carnotite than pristine ore. In contrast, leached ore samples from the column base contained regions with more carnotite than pristine ore, indicating precipitation. Three carnotite grain micro-structures were identified in the leached ore; fan-spherulite, granular and core-shell cubes, with evidence for multiple growth phases.Evidence of carnotite precipitation was seen at the edge of and in pore spaces within montmorillonite and dolomite grains. The point of zero charge of both minerals is lower than the pH of the lixiviant (pH 10.8), thus the mineral surfaces are negatively charged and would not attract UO2(CO3)34- ions out of solution. Similarly, the decrease in the uranium content of the lixiviant is not attributed to super-saturation, as this was unlikely to have been achieved. The United StatesÆ reporting standard for the mining industry for securities purposes is contained in the Security and Exchange CommissionÆs Industry Guide 7. It defines proven and probable Reserves using its own definitions, and prohibits the disclosure of quantitative estimates, for all mineralisation other than those two Reserve categories (though disclosure of Measured and Indicated Resources as quantitative mineralised material estimates is now informally allowed). Similarly, it restricts disclosure of value estimates to Reserves only, which SEC policy generally requires to be on an historic cost accounting basis. The SEC does not maintain a formal Competent or Qualified Person policy. In March 1999, the US-based Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) released an update of its 1991 guidelines for definitions to be used in reporting of Mineral Resources, Reserves and Exploration Information, closely abiding by the 1997 CMMI recommendations. However, without SEC recognition, reporting under the SME and CMMI definitions is effectively barred for US companies. The SEC intends to adopt the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). This will occur within just a few years, when the convergence project for development of the IFRS has reached a satisfactory point. The US is the largest financial supporter and participator in IASB. The Extractive Industries Standard of the IFRS will likely terminate Industry Guide 7. However, the effect of this international replacement will likely be equally restrictive. This could possibly neutralise the benefit of a CMMI-based global reporting standard. SME, the US society encompassing the widest range of mining industry professionals, does not have a Code of Ethics. It has no mechanism for requiring members to abide by a professional standard. SME is presently looking into possible solutions for this deficiency. US-based professional societies that do have a binding Code of Ethics, generally cater to a single profession, and are not just mining industry related. The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA) are examples. The SME is considering creating a subsidiary body with an enforceable Code of Ethics. To support a CMMI-based global reporting standard, competent persons will need to work across international borders. A standardised mechanism for qualifying and registering competent persons will be needed. National rules and laws must allow competent persons to easily enter countries to perform their work. State issued licenses are increasingly required for much of the work performed in the US mining industry by engineers, geologists and minerals appraisers (valuers). Such licenses are not required by the SEC for Reserve reporting in the US, may not be required for valuation of mineral properties under certain circumstances, and except for real property valuer licenses, they generally do not have a binding code of conduct. However, state licensing of professionals forms a substantial and increasing barrier to interstate trade in professional services, and can be a prohibitive barrier to professionals from outside the US. Any rationalisation of this confusing patchwork of regulations confronting US minerals industry practitioners will only occur as part of larger, national change, hopefully aimed at compliance with international standards and protocols. The US does not have a valuation standard aimed specifically at the mining industry. The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, the national valuation standards, often must be applied to mineral property valuation, but contains no specific instructions for minerals. The author has campaigned against development of minerals valuation standards proposed by US minerals institutes. Instead he encourages the mining industry worldwide to place its support behind the initiative of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) to include an extractive industries section in its International Valuation Standards (IVS). This should provide a global set of valuation standards for the mining and petroleum industry within two years. This addition to IVS will provide essential valuation standards reference support for the extractive industries financial reporting standard of the International Accounting Standards Board. The IVS has achieved a high level of acceptance in the developed and lesser developed countries of the world. It provides a comprehensive framework of Generally Accepted Valuation Principles for the valuation profession internationally, for valuation of all property or asset types. IVSC is effectively a sister organisation to IASB. The IASBÆs International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), previously known as the International Accounting Standards (IAS), reference and quote IVS in some instructions for determination of fair value. IVSC is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) member of the United Nations and maintains liaison with many important international economic, accounting and financial agencies, such as the OECD, IMF and WTO.

McLeod: Without getting into the argument as to how well we can know our resource levels specifically in the immediate short term, I would like to make one or two points about the future, and perhaps try and persuade people that they are not really facing a doomsday. It is fair to say that over the last few years the rate at which we have increased our resources has far exceeded the rate at which we have used them, and this is likely to continue for quite a few years yet. As people are now looking for a substitute for petroleum, later on we will be looking for a substitute for coal, should the position get serious. After all man is pretty versatile, has plenty of initiative-and makes allowances for experience. It has been demonstrated here by the way people are looking at use of low quality coals and better use of the coals that are available. It would be fair to say that what now we regard as economically submarginal deposits will, by the time we need them, become economic. I think that there is quite a lot in front of us in exploration and finding new reserves. I would like to have comment from yourself sir, because I recall reading a report of a meeting, here in Wollongong I think it was, in which you addressed the local branch on the future of coal in Australia, and you said that the coal basins of Australia had been well explored and there was not much chance of new discoveries. Since that time we have seen some thousands of millions of tonnes turned up in the Galilee Basin of Queensland, we have seen five hundred million tonnes turned up in Lake Phillipson in South Australia. Do your previous comments still apply? I would like to hear from some of the exploration people, who are operating on an Australia-wide basis, as to how they regard our chances of discovering significant new deposits and significant extensions of known deposits. H,artnell: Mr. McLeod has asked me to comment on what he has just said. I think that the important thing is that our knowledge of the main coal basins in Eastern Australia is increasing in detail but for the most part the extent of coal basins is not being increased in respect of their superficial areas. There are additions but they are not substantially changing our expectation of what the main coal basins will be. I believe that our task is essentially to intensify our knowledge of the main coal basins that we know about. This is important for example for the various reasons that Mr. Roach was talking about, that is the problem of surface alienation, jeopardising the chance of recovery when you go to underground operations. My approach to this whole problem is predicated on the belief that coal has a special destiny to perform in the next fifty years. I believe that it is going to take up to fifty years and maybe a little longer before the enormously demanding technology for nuclear power recovery is in fact achieved. When it is achieved the supply of energy to the world will be enormous, much beyond what we have ever even dreamed about. The mind boggles at what the people of the middle of next century, of two thousand and fifty, will command in the way of physical resources. It is going to be, I believe, tremendous, but the technology involved is very demanding. I mentioned to Mr. McLeod the other day that according to the information that I got in November last, 60% of the nuclear power stations in the United States were out of action, by automatic cut offs because of safety requirements. The technology of breeder reactors seems each year to be a bit further off. In the meantime coal I am sure is going to be called on to supply power directly to fluidised bed and other technologies for power generation. It is going to be called upon in the near future, I believe, to supply liquid fuel on a vast scale and the only thing in my view that we should be thinking about is whether the coal producing countries of the world will succeed in producing as much coal as is going to be demanded. I believe the real challenge to the coal mining industries of the world is that they may fail to do what is going to be demanded of them. This is a challenge I believe to mining technology. I think that we should be working deliberately and energetically finding ways and means where underground recoveries, instead of averaging 50%, can average 50% plus, plus, plus, and this is the first requirement. We should be spending many millions every year, here and overseas, on increasing our means of winning coal because every tonne of coal that is alienated and left irrecoverable in the earth is going to weaken the capacity of the coal mining industry to fulfil, what I believe to be its destiny in the next 50 years.

Exploration and mining in Third World countries will essentially be an exercise in the transfer of technology. We must not underestimate the effort it will take to develop the necessary industry peer group in these nations which can accept the latest western technology and use it to good effect.

It is always difficult to sum up an open forum adequately and instantaneously, so, with the privilege of hindsight, and also with some time to reflect, I am exercising the Chairman's prerogative to put together my view of the overall conclusions. Hopefully, these may provide a focus for each Institute to formulate its own programme with respect to mineral industry education. First, in answer to the question, "Should there be Schools of Mines?", there was a very clear 'yes'. However, I reiterate what I said in the introduction to this forum, specific professional education for the mineral industry exists only because the mineral industry sees a need and wants it. If the mineral industry should decide that it does not need professionals with specific mineral industry training, then such training will cease to exist. As alluded by Dr Hackett, if such training ceases to exist, one must then question the need for Institutes of Mining and Metallurgy. Now, there's some food for thought! Specialist schools of mines (metallurgy and geology) can only exist in an environment of genuine interaction with, and support by, industry. For their part, schools of mines, used here in a generic sense, require leadership that is strong but responsive to industry needs. It is the leader that puts his stamp on a school, and, to a large extent, determines whether that school is 'good' or only 'mediocre'.

Most developing projects face a range of technical and non-technical challenges, and examination of development histories can potentially provide insights into improved approaches to project development. The Kestanelik project in the Canakkale region of Western Turkey was acquired by Chesser Resources Ltd in 2008. Turkey is a significant and growing source of gold production, with sector participation by both domestic and international companies. While the broad ranges of challenges faced by developing projects is well known, there are relatively few case studies in which the range of technical, environmental, social and governance challenges are presented in a single contribution. Recent studies of undeveloped complex orebodies have particularly shown the extent to which environment, social and governance (ESG) complexities contribute to project delays and failures. The Kestanelik project faced a full range of technical and ESG complexities, and provides an illustrative example of the associated challenges. CITATION: Valenta, R, 2018. It is my role at this juncture to report to you on behalf of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions itself. In essence, the Council is an orbital body - a little like Halley's Comet - it returns to earth, in spectacular style, once in every four years. We must acknowledge, however, that the spectacle is provided by the constituent member body organising the particular event and, on this occasion, it is The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. On behalf of the Council and its other constituent bodies may I thank the Australasian Institute most sincerely. Our thanks go to Sir James Foots, the President of the 13th Congress, and to all the members of the organising committee and to the five sub- committees. Over 40 people are involved as full members and I am certain there will have been many more involved in very meaningful ways. None of this great- team would ask me to mention them individually, I'm sure, but to fail to acknowledge the role of John Funnell, the Honorary Secretary, would be an unforgivable omission. We must also thank the kindred institutions in Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia who all helped with the tours themselves or with the initial preparations. Qantas, Jetabout Australia, and Jetabout Singapore have all also made very important contributions and, in our different ways, we each owe our thanks to them. At the two most recent meetings of the Congress - in Hong Kong and Johannesburg - Professor Marston Fleming made this report on behalf of the Council and was supported on both occasions by Robert MacWilliam as vice- chairman. Marston died in 1983 and Robert died in 1984; both men contributed a great deal to CMMI and we will miss their counsel for a long time. As you know, Sir Alistair Frame succeeded Marston Fleming as chairman in 1984 and I succeeded Robert MacWilliam as Vice-chairman.

Safety First and zero accidents are the targets most mines in Australia are aiming for, but manual processes and procedures limit the capabilities and response time in emergency situations. Even with a high safety focus, accidents and incidents still happen, too often with tragic outcomes. Dangerous areas, narrow roads and winding curves are all daily obstacles that threaten workforce safety. Every unforeseen event, such as traffic collisions and other accidents, puts lives in danger and weakens production. Safety must be guaranteed.

Mines in Queensland are transitioning to the progressive rehabilitation and closure plan (PRCP) framework. Mine operators are required to select and justify appropriate and viable post-mining land uses (PMLUs) following consideration of the surrounding landscape, community views and the objectives of local and regional planning strategies. The new approach offers opportunities for considering innovative PMLU options and collaborative use of post-closure mine assets, such as infrastructure (power, road/rail, buildings), dams and residual voids. Consideration of regional planning strategies will require a shift in thinking as mine closure is regulated and planned on an individual site basis and selection of PMLUs are commonly considered from this perspective. Planning at regional rather than site-specific scale offers strategic advantages, including the ability to align PMLU selection with the regional context and stakeholder aspirations (which could foster sustainable outcomes); address cumulative environmental and socio-economic impacts; consider options that are only viable at scale (ie across larger geographic areas); establish more extensive and connected ecological habitat corridors; reinstate larger expanses of functional agricultural land; and optimise regional resources (Hattingh, Williams and Corder, 2019). This paper presents the findings from a multidisciplinary project that identified PMLU options within Queensland’s four mining regions: the North-west Minerals Province, North Queensland, Bowen Basin and Clarence-Moreton and Surat Basin (Figure 1). To enable spatial analysis at the appropriate scale and to accommodate geographic diversity, North Queensland was divided into three geographical ‘focus areas’ – Weipa, Charters Towers and Tablelands. Delineation of the areas captured most of the mines within the wider region as well as regional characteristics and features.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. Mining of narrow vein mineralisation, invariably depending on the mining method selected, involves the extraction of both ore and waste rock. The level to which mining of waste rock can be minimised depends on numerous factors, but particularly the thickness and dip of the deposit. Resue mining is a method of mining that allows split face firing within stopes to allow waste and ore to be mined separately, allowing dilution to be minimised. This paper examines the technique of resue firing and its applicability to the mining of narrow vein deposits. Particular emphasis is placed on the conditions in which resue mining presents a suitable option for mining of narrow veins.

In the course of an investigation of the influence of bismuth on copper carried out some years ago, (1) the author found that phosphorus exerted a beneficial effect on bismuth-copper alloys of low bismuth and oxygen content by neutralizing the embrittling effect of the bismuth. In the intervening years, a further examination of bismuth-phosphorus-copper alloys has been canied out and the influence of other elements and combinations of elements on copper containing bismuth has been studied.The results recorded in the present paper are part of this investigation.MATERIALSAll the alloys were made from high-grade copper (KS.A. wire-bar) of the following composition: copper 99·95%, oxygen 0,040'%, iron 0·0015%, sulphur less than 0-001%, bismuth less than (j>'OOl%, other elements each less than O· 0010/<-. The bar was hot rolled and cold drawn to strip which was cut into short lengths and cleaned in nitric acid ready for melting.A piece of this 'strip was drawn to wire 0·08 in. diam., annealed at 5000 C, and measured for electrical conductivity as a check on purity. The result was 101·5% of the I.E'.C. standard.In making the alloys, phosphorus was added as 14% phosphor-copper, bismuth as 17% bismuth-copper, and the other constituents either as copper alloys or as elements of a high degree of purity.PREPARATIQN OF STRIPSThe charges were melted in plumbago crucibles (Morgan salamander brand) in an oil-fired furnace, Le;, in the manner commonly adopted in industrial practice. The copper was first melted under charcoal, well stirred with a chaned stick, and the necessary alloying elements added and stirred in with the stick. The weight of a charge varied according to requirements but generally was about 4 lb. The charges were poured into slightly tapered brass moulds heated to about 1000 C and dressed with a mixture of mineral oil and tallow. They were not only poured under charcoal through the burning mould dressing but also- through a ring of flame produced by burning kerosene on asbestos cord wrapped round the top of the mould. Experiments carried out with plain copper proved that by this means oxygen could be excluded from the stream of metal. The billets were 7·5 in. long x O·83 in. diam. x 1·3 lb. weight.The billets were cropped about 1 in. from the top, cleaned in nitric acid, and measured for density by the usual method of weighing in air and -in water. As these measurements were required only as a check on casting, technique a high degree of accuracy was not essential (accuracy = -+ 0·2%).

The procedure for operation of deluge systems installed in road tunnels is still a subject of debate. The work undertaken in this paper assists in the understanding of the effects of deluge in road tunnels, and thus aims to help inform the development of operational policy. Analysis was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to help explore the deluge interaction with the tunnel ventilation (including smoke exhaust) and combustion products. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: Deluge activation can decrease the required critical velocity for smoke backlayering, and this in turn can improve the effectiveness of a smoke exhaust system.The dominant parameter for deluge effectiveness is the vehicle configuration, with shielded scenarios (such as a fire in the passenger compartment) showing almost no water reaching the fire. The water delivery rate (5 mm/min versus 10 mm/min) has only a minor effect on the smoke duct damper inlet temperatures and downstream smoke temperatures for small fires (5 MW). For large fires (50 MW) the higher water delivery rate gives slightly improved performance (lower damper inlet temperatures and lower downstream smoke temperatures). A one-dimensional transient tunnel model incorporating different operational and deluge response policies (ie deluge activation times) was developed. It was used to examine the influence of different operational parameters on life safety risk and tunnel damage risk. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: The life safety risk for different scenarios has a sensitivity to deluge activation policy with the case of delaying the deluge activation for a long time giving the worst outcomes. However, the most critical parameters for life safety risk are operator response time (for all response activities, not just deluge) and the type of fire (configuration, size and growth rate).There is a reduction in risk of tunnel damage when the deluge is activated earlier, although the fire configuration (ie whether or not the seat of the fire can be reached) has the greatest influence on the outcome. It is concluded that the deluge activation policy should be case-dependent. It will depend on the tunnel, the safety systems provided, and most particularly the vehicles involved. The current policy in Australian tunnels is for manual activation of the deluge by the tunnel operator as soon as practical after the fire is confirmed (see also PIARC, 2007). This is a good policy. However, future work may be helpful to improve the skills of operators to make the best judgement as to when deluge should be activated, balancing all risks. This work could include research to further the understanding of deluge and fire in road tunnels, training programs and consideration of historical fire events.

The old Trekelano mining area is situated in the Cloncurry Gold and Mineral Field 14 km east-south-east of Duchess. It connected with the main Cloncurry-Dajarra railway line by a private line from Juenburra, a distance of 10 km. The distance by rail from Townsville is 561 km. The area was first mentioned circa 1902 - 1903 when a very short report said, that a Tony Allis had taken a parcel of copper ore out of a mine which, he called æThe InheritedÆ. After that report, nothing further was printed until about 1906, when traces of copper were noticed on a wagon track going to Kiama Well. The Trekelano deposit did not outcrop, with the cap covered by about two metres of soil. The deposit was named after an early pastoral holding. The early prospectors were however disappointed by TrekelanoÆs low copper grades, approximately five per cent Cu. This is understandable when, in those days, about 25 per cent was the cut-off grade for mines in the district. Meanwhile, The Hampden Mining and Smelting Company were constructing a smelter to treat their sulphide ores at Kuradala that was replacing their high grade oxides ore. By about 1910, the Hampden Mining and Smelting Company was experiencing smelting problems, and needed suitable oxidised copper ore to blend with the Kuradala pyritic ore. Someone must have remembered the Trekelano low-grade oxides, resulting in agreement to mine and cart the ore to Duchess, from where it was railed to Hampden, as Kuradala was known at that time.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, Laronde Division, operates the deepest single-lift shaft in the western hemisphere. The initial Penna hoisting plant was designed for a production rate of 1800 tonnes per day (t/d) from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success, while sinking the shaft, led to a decision in 1998 to increase the production rate to 4500 t/d of ore from a loading depth of 2200 m. The new production rate was achieved by increasing the size of the rope and reducing the rope static factor from the existing 5.0 required by regulation to a static factor using the formula 25 000/(4000 + L) contained in a draft document that would eventually become SABS 0294 in South Africa. The formula permits Laronde to use a static factor as low as 4.0. The upgraded Penna hoisting system is the first hoisting plant outside of South Africa to meet the South African requirements. This paper describes the conversion of the hoisting plant to the lower rope selection factor in the year 2000 and the operating and maintenance issues experienced since then.

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

Transport to and handling of iron ore at Port Hedland, Western Australia, results in the generation of airborne particulates that contribute to the atmospheric dust load, with concerns about potential local environmental impacts (eg mangrove swamps) and possible human health implications. Mineral and chemical characteristics of the Background soil samples were contaminated with particles of iron ore as martite octahedra and grains of micro-platy hematite as detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the 2.5 - 10 ¦m and 10 - 50 ¦m size fractions. Fossilized wood fragments similar to those observed in Yandicoogina fines ore were also detected in some background soil samples. With a predicted increase in demand of channel iron deposits (CID) ores and the inherently dusty Marra Mamba ores (eg West Angelas, MAC, OB29/30/35, Marandoo), in conjunction with particulate emissions from hot-briquetted iron and direct reduced iron (HBI/DRI) processing plants, there is the potential for additional sources of anthropogenic dust to contribute to background levels. Mineralogical and chemical characterisation of the entire range of particulates that could be produced is necessary for a complete understanding of their potential impact on the local environment.
