The crystal chemistry of carbonate in Ca apatites, including Na-free and Na-bearing hydroxylapatite (CHAP) and Na-bearing fluorapatite (CFAP) and chlorapatite (CCLAP), has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure, using crystals synthesised from carbonate-rich melts at 1 GPa, 1400 - 1000¦C. The carbonate ion substitutes for both the X (OH, F, Cl) anion species in the apatite channel (type A carbonate) and the phosphate group (type B carbonate). The type A carbonate ion is oriented in the channel with two oxygen atoms close to the c-axis, and the type B carbonate ion is located close to the sloping faces of the substituted phosphate tetrahedron, with details varying with composition series. Sodium promotes the uptake of type B carbonate and also has a profound effect on FTIR spectra. Crystal compositions correspond approximately to the substitution formula Ca10-(y+z)Nay z[(PO4)6-(y+2z)(CO3)y+2z][X2-2x(CO3)x], with x + y up to 1.0 and z + 0.0 for CHAP, x + y + 4z + 0.4 for CCLAP, and x + y + 2z + 0.1 for CFAP, for equivalent conditions of synthesis. The sodium cation and A and B carbonate ion defects are locally coupled in all three composition series to facilitate charge compensation and minimise the effects of spatial accommodation. Synthetic Na-bearing type A-B CHAP with x + y + 0.5 has a similar chemical composition and FTIR spectrum to biological apatite.

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in and areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

The Iron Ore Company (IOC) of Canada Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m × 1 m × 1 m) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures.One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion into the blastholes provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infi ltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rock mass. Blast results showed reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muck piles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realised.To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used shovel based camera technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with global positioning system (GPS) locations. A large population of digital images was analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

Since 1969, a substantial number of geophysical methods have been applied in the search for porphyry copper and mesothermal type -sulpha-de deposits. These have assisted with geological mapping as well as the definition of various sulphide depos-its. The application of these methods at the Frieda-Nena deposits, Papua New Guinea, can be used as a case study for exploration in other parts of New Guinea.In 1993, Highlands Gold Limited carried out an intensive geophysical program over the Nena deposit. The methods employed included, CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics), airborne and ground elect-romagnetics, IP/resistivity and ground magnetics. The magnetic method was used as a regional mapping tool as well as a way of mapping alteration zones over both the Nena and Frieda River copper deposits. Electromagnetics, in part-icular FLAIRTEM, is a rapid reconn-aissance tool as well as a detailed mapping tool for the location of Nena-style massive sulphide deposits. IP/ resistivity is an expensive but most useful tool for mapping out Frieda porphyry copper style disseminated sulphides as well as Nena style deposits. It can be used to define drill targets in areas of difficult Access.a

Laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the resistance coefficient of the flow through beds irrigated with wetting and non-wetting liquids. A formula was obtained which may be used to evaluate the resistance of the irrigated packing. Quantitative investigations were also carried out on operating furnaces at Magnitogorsk. Continuous measurements of the lower pressure drops were made under different furnace conditions. Pressures were measured in the tuyere space and the bosh region. A significant transient behaviour of the pressure drop was observed in the irrigated zone as a function of the accumulation of the liquid phase in the bosh region as smelting progressed. Additionally, transient processes were also investigated in the upper furnace zones. The basic cause of the transient behaviour was shown to be the irregularity of burden descent caused by the casting cycle. It was shown that the rate of burden descent between consecutive casts reflects fairly accurately the accumulation and drainage of the liquid products as a result of which heat transfer, reduction and aerodynamic processes assume transient character. In practically all cases of casting a decrease in blast pressure and that over the furnace height of 0.2 kg/cm2 was observed. The analyses of radial gas composition at the stock line showed that compositional variations connected with the casting cycle are most pronounced in the central and peripheral regions, whilst in the intermediate regions the conditions are relatively stable. Calculations show that as casting progresses there is a decrease in the gas flow rate at the periphery and an increase in the centre of the furnace. The transient nature of the aerodynamic processes in packings revealed the existence of an appreciable reserve capacity. Elimination of transience was tested on the furnace at Magnitogorsk and improved operating and economical furnace parameters obtained.

At present there exist few engineering calculations and principles to determine exclusion zones for personnel in the vicinity of underground explosive storage areas. This paper is written to encourage discussion and proposes a method to determine the impact of a blast wave through scientific principles. Then, criteria to determine an ‘exclusion zone’ need to be identified.There has been much work on identifying the pressure rise and the energy of explosive detonations underground but little to develop standards in criteria that can be used to identify exclusion zones for useful design of underground infrastructure. The author presents the newest ways of calculating the pressure rise and energy (impulse) of detonations and puts forward some criteria to be used in the identification of personnel exclusion zones to spark peer review and discussion of these criteria towards developing standards for engineering design.Smith and Sapko (2005) used Sach’s scaling laws to develop a relationship for both pressure rise and impulse, which incorporated factors for intersections. Intersections will have a large bearing on the peak pressure and the energy of the blast wave and needs to be incorporated. Silvestrini, Genova and Leon Trujillo (2009) developed the scaling laws with an energy concentration factor to predict blast propagation in partially confined geometries and together the author has proposed equations for determining the peak side pressure and the impulse in a tunnel. Given the weight and type of the explosive, the average cross-section of the tunnel complex and the number and type of intersections encountered, the pressure and impulse can be calculated.The military has carried out many investigations as to the influence of blast pressure and impulse on the human body. Lung damage, ear damage and velocity knock down are three of the criteria standards that are presented as possible methods of determining exclusion zones around an underground explosives magazine. The author suggests that the velocity curves presented by Bowen, Fletcher and Richmond (1968) could be an acceptable method of determining an exclusion zone as it incorporates the side pressure and the energy of a blast wave to determine the ability of the wave to knock down personnel.CITATION:Lovitt, M B, 2014. An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.

Flotation is one of the main concentration processes to purify kaolin clay via the removal of naturally occurring impurity minerals containing Ti and Fe. Currently, there are two types of collector chemistries used in the industry to float coloured impurity minerals. These are traditional tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and specialty hydroxamate (AHX) based collectors. AHX based collectors have long been known to be the most selective collectors to float Ti and Fe based coloured impurity minerals (CIMs) as compared to TOFA based systems. AHX based collectors provide, not only improved selectivity and simplified process, but also more importantly, make it possible to treat certain kaolin resources that do not respond to standard TOFA systems. However, the relatively higher cost of straight AHX collectors has restricted broader application of these collectors in kaolin clay and other oxide flotation applications for a long time. Recent technological advancements, in both making and formulating AHX products more economically, increased the usage of these collectors in kaolin applications. Modified AHX products offer more economical alternatives and process options to provide high purity kaolin clay products for specialty applications based on cost-performance criteria. In this paper, the flotation performance of a series of newly developed AHX formulations is provided along with the characteristics of AHX flotation in general. In addition, flotation performance of earlier AHX collectors is provided based on published literature as background data.

Research cruises dedicated to seafloor hydrothermal activity along the Kermadec arc first began with the Sonne-135 expedition in 1998. This was followed by the worldÆs first systematic survey for venting along an arc during the 1999 NZAPLUME I expedition. Since then, cruises dedicated to mapping plumes along the Kermadec arc include NZAPLUME II (2002), NZAPLUME III (2004) and ROVARK (2007). In addition, the manned submersible cruises SWEEP Vents (2004) and NZASRoF (2005) utilised the Shinaki 6500 and Pisces V, respectively, to sample in detail select hydrothermalsystems for mineralised samples, rocks and vent fluids. The ROVARK (2007) cruise was the first to deploy an autonomous underwater vehicle (ABE) along the arc which surveyed Brothers volcano at a far greater resolution than had been done previously by ships on the sea surface. While these expeditions have largely been led by GNS Science, together with its collaborators from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (NOAA/PMEL), significant contributions have been made by other groups from various nations, exemplifying the global interest in seafloor hydrothermal activity associated with intraoceanic arcs. "Problematic issues in materials handling applications are often amplified in the iron ore industry due to the relatively high density of the ore as well as the abrasive nature of the product. One of the main issues arising from the handling of iron ore is excessive wear, with two applications typically suffering accelerated wear issues being transfer chutes and conveyor belts. These wear issues are problematic due to additional capital costs, but mainly due to the associated downtimes resulting in the accelerated wear. The resource estimation of lateritic deposits, such as Aurukun, presents specific issues related to the lateral changes in thickness and elevation of the various horizontal layers (or zones) within the deposit where the x and y dimensions are orders of magnitude greater than the z dimension. The objective was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) block model that retained the vertical and lateral variation inherent in deposits of this type to allow full optimisation of the production plan without prior selection of an economic portion (enriched bauxite layers) of the profile at the resource estimation stage. The Aurukun bauxite deposit is held by Chalco Australia Pty Ltd (Chalco) and forms part of the world-class Weipa bauxite province, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The bauxite is predominantly pisolitic with an upper boehmite-rich zone and lower gibbsite-rich zone. The bauxite consists of both in situ and reworked domains, is overlain by a thin soil horizon and has kaolinite clay as a transitional base. A portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was utilised on site, in addition to elemental assay, on each drill sample to determine the mineralogy, in particular levels of boehmite, gibbsite, kaolinite and reactive silica. As part of the scope of work, a field program was undertaken using large diameter Boart Longyear sonic drilling to acquire detailed density measurements across the deposit to allow compliance with Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) reporting requirements. Interpretation of the stratigraphy was conducted on a hole by hole basis with definition of the zone layering based on stratigraphy, geochemistry and mineralogy. The zone boundaries were then modelled as 3D surfaces and used to constrain a block model. The block model estimation used the ordinary kriging method, with the estimation done in unfolded space and then refolded, therefore maintaining the zones irrespective of thickness or orientation. The unfolding process converts the real-world positions for both blocks and informing samples to a scaled position relative to the roof and floor of each zone. Analysis of the data and variography were also undertaken in unfolded space. The x and y dimensions are unchanged, but the z dimension is a relative position. The effect of the unfolding and limits on number of samples per hole is to æpushÆ the informing sample search sideways but within the stratification, rather than vertically. This honours the strong vertical zonation within the bauxite profile. The JORC Code requires that the stated resource must have æreasonable prospects for economic extractionÆ. This is a qualitative rather than quantitative definition. A number of selection criteria to define a resource roof and floor were developed in consultation with the project engineers and owners to meet these criteria. The vertical selection of material to include in the resource highlights the variation in the development (and destruction) of the bauxite profile from area to area within the deposit.

Impact-induced rock fragmentation is a mechanism that is commonly used for rock breakage in drilling and crushing. Additionally, rock fragmentation by blasting is frequently used in rock excavation operations. Experience shows that the presence of discontinuities can significantly influence the impact-induced damage and fragmentation of rock. Quantification of the response of jointed rock masses to impact loads is complicated by the fact that the available laboratory tests are mainly designed for aggregates or intact rocks. It can be argued that neither of these tests adequately represent a jointed rock mass. This paper presents the results of a series of numerical simulations used to investigate the influence of pre-existing discontinuities on the impact-induced fragmentation of rock masses. The methodology includes determination of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of a rock unit by conducting a series of laboratory tests on intact rock samples collected from a quarry in Canada. A 2D distinct element code, Particle Flow Code, was used to generate a bonded particle model in order to simulate both static mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and indirect tensile strength) and dynamic mechanical property (drop weight tensile strength) of the intact rock. The calibrated numerical model was then used to construct large-scale synthetic rock mass samples by incorporating discontinuity networks of different intensity into the bonded particle model. Finally, the impact-induced fragmentation inflicted by a rigid projectile particle on the jointed rock mass samples, simulated by a synthetic rock mass model, was determined. The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 in below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop haft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 to below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would he extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This kill limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will he stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill.

The aims of this paper are to present the governing science, verify the performance and demonstrate the potential engineering applications of a computational simulator for in situ leach mining of non-ferrous minerals. Assuming that the target mineral is deposited either uniformly within rock matrixes (matrix-hosted) or on fracture walls (fracture-hosted), in situ leaching can be treated as reactive flow and transport in geological media (porous media for matrix-hosted ore deposits and fractured media for fracture-hosted ore deposits). Under this treatment, the processes of in situ leach mining for non-ferrous minerals can be quantified through several sets of equations and these coupled equations have been numerically solved. The computational simulator has been applied to the simulations of one-, two-, and three-dimensional in situ leaching cases. The computational simulator, together with laboratory and in situ leaching tests, can be used to:optimise the leaching chemistry; optimise the in situ scale mining operations; scale up the in situ scale test operation to a full-scale mining operation; and evaluate the post-mining environmental restoration plan.

Hazards in underground mines are concomitant with the mining of mineral deposits and have their source in a minerÆs work environment. The authors of the paper have undertaken a trial classification of these hazards into three groups, depending on the sphere of their occurrence:lithosphere, ie rock mass, atmosphere, ie air in mine workings, and technosphere, ie machines, equipment and facilities in mine workings. The lithosphere creates such hazards as bumps, rock outbursts, the atmosphere is a factor causing fires, methane explosions and climatic hazards, whereas accidents concomitant with an operation of machines and equipment occur in the technosphere. Assuming that the number of accidents in the mining industry, concomitant with hazards, reflects the degree of safety, it has been shown, that in Poland they are under control to a large extent.

Two major issues are to be addressed in the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The first of these is the need to increase concentrator flotation capacity to increase copper recovery, while the second is the need to reduce the iron sulphide dilution to meet future smelting requirements. Extra capacity in the cleaner and retreatment sections of the concentrator have been identified as key target areas, with additional copper recovery of at least one per cent identified from plant trials. Extensive pilot plant tests have been undertaken to evaluate the performance of the Jameson cell compared to conventional mechanical cell and column circuits. This work has shown that Jameson cells present an opportunity to achieve the desired grade and capacity specifications at lower capital cost than available alternatives. This paper outlines metallurgical results of work undertaken in the Copper Concentrator, together with a summary of pertinent Jameson cell operating parameters investigated during the period.

Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile has been conducting detailed assessments investigating value adding options for their asset. The mine has conducted several detailed Mine-to- Mill and Grade Engineering studies to investigate increased throughput and head grade and to quantifying the impact of these approaches across the life of mine. CRC ORE has two key technologies namely Grade Engineering and the Integrated Extraction Simulator. These two technology suites have been combined to understand the technological landscape and associated value drivers suitable for application at Los Bronces. Detailed ore characterisation test work was conducted to:  measure and spatially model the propensity of ores to naturally deport and  develop customised blast models for Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering evaluation The outputs of this work were utilised to develop a block model populated with a range on new Grade Engineering and blasting parameters suitable for scenario analysis. To facilitate scenario analysis a high-fidelity value chain model of the Los Bronces operation from blasting to concentrate production was built in IES. IES was combined with sophisticated analytical tools such as Neural Networks to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model made it possible to simulate in IES all available blocks in the block model to predict throughput and grade changes for different strategic scenarios. The scenario analysis was run across 24 strategic combinations of Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering and comprised several million simulations. The scenarios investigated each technology independently and jointly to provide an attributed block model that can feed forward into technoeconomic modelling to determine optimal execution strategies for the mine. This paper presents the first published study combining Grade Engineering and IES to provide mass simulation capability to investigate strategic options for a mining asset.

The treatment of mining and metallurgical liquid effluents is becoming, everyday, a necessity felt by these industries. Physical-chemical and chemical methods for treating such effluents are generally necessary whenever heavy-metals and other toxic compounds such as cyanide are present. The present paper discusses the use of precipitate flotation as an alternative physical- chemical method that can be applied for the treatment of effluents containing heavy-metals (mainly zinc and cadmium) and cyanide. Examples of laboratorial scale applications on real effluents are given. In both cases precipitate flotation was able to reduce the concentration of toxic components of the effluents at a very high removal rate, generating a solid waste that can either be disposed, re-used or recycled. A cationic collector - dodecylamine hydrochloride - demonstrated to be the best choice of surfactant for the two systems investigated. Sodium sulphide and dithizone were selected for the precipitation of the zinc bearing effluent whereas a copper salt was preferentially used for precipitating cyanide in a form adequate for its recycling envisaging the use of an AVR (acidification - volatilisation - regeneration) technique.
