The computer graphic routines and digital simulation program of coal cleaning circuits have been developed in the Mineral Processing Engineering Department, West Virginia University. The functions of the program include computing, tabulation and graphing of 1) washability characteristics of raw coals, 2) blending, 3) Tromp distribution curves for two washer types-- water only and dense medium, 4) predicting the functional relationship of yield and qualities of clean coal product in individual and overall coal cleaning circuits in coal preparation plant, and 5) determining the optimal clean coal yield based on the market and environmental specifications. Amdahl 470 V/7A digital computer, Tektronic 4025 graphic terminal and Tektronix 4663 digital plotter with Fortran IV are used to achieve the goals. The simulation with the aid of graphic routine program of coal cleaning circuits is a useful tool for coal preparation engineers in evaluating the feasibility of proposed flowsheets, in investigating the effect of a modification in a unit operation of an existing plant, in analyzing the off-line optimization, and in comparing the alternative circuit control strategies. The coal cleaning process simulation with graphic routine can contribute greatly to the decision making processes of preparation plant design.

The Mount Hope stockwork molybdenum deposit, Eureka County, Nevada, occurs In a small igneous cauldron complex 32 to 38 mybp in age. The deposit is characterized by alteration zones and mineralized shells symmetrically distributed around multiple intrusive. For samples from the 25000 meters of 1981-82 drilling, an appraisal of error in in-house sample preparation and in commercial assaying has been made. After splitting, drill core is crushed and reduced in volume (8: 1 at 10-mesh, 8: 1 at 70-mesh, 6: 1 at 200-mesh) to supply 25 grams of 200-mesh pulp for replicate analyses. A 0.5 g portion of the pulp 1s used for dissolution and atomic absorption analyses. Factors which initially generated unacceptable data variances have been minimized by planning, repeat analyses, introduction of standards, and routine monitoring. Assuming that error between replicate assays defines a Gaussian distribution with its average ideally equal to zero, precision (from preparation including core splitting and analysis of 8400 pairs of molybdenum samples) is on the order of ± 25%. The error distribution is not based. Accuracy is approximately 4% lower than absolute as determined by replicate assays of commercially prepared samples.

In my paper on "The Consumption of Fuel in the Taylor Gas-Producer Plants at the Aspen and Marsac Mills" (Trans., xxiii., 134), I mentioned that in the plant which I had designed for the Ontario mill, the gas-tubes were to be covered with thin, corrugated sheet-iron, over which a coating of asbestos-magnesia would be spread in order to effect a good insulation and keep the gas as hot as possible. At the Ontario mill, two Stetefeldt furnaces and two revolving driers are fired with gas. One furnace is connected with a Taylor producer of 5 feet diameter, and the other furnace and the two driers are heated by the gas from a Taylor producer of 7 feet diameter. In the latter case the gas-tubes are necessarily somewhat long, and the cleaning of them takes time. In order to prevent overheating of the tubes during that operation, it has been found advantageous not to provide them with an insulating covering. Flotation ENTERING the profession of minerals beneficiation (it was plain garden variety "ore dressing" . in those days) I was fortunate that at that time the first major innovation in modern ore dressing practice was being introduced. I refer to the Wilfley table. You youngsters that came into the game only 30 years ago or even more recently, with flotation machines and reagents as your very ready tool in time of trouble, do not realize what the invention of the Wilfley table meant to us. We had but one physical property of ores to reckon with-specific gravity- and when there was but little difference in specific gravity between the mineral and the gangue, we were in trouble. The jig and the revolving table were our only mechanical equipment for recovering values and so that we might make even a reasonably satisfactory extraction, we had to classify and reclassify, and jig and rejig, and worry about the laws and advantages of free settling vs hindered settling and just tire the minerals out.

Delays in the completion of the alterations to the plant at the works of Messrs. Oliver Bros. and Phillips, in Pittsburgh, coupled with the increased demand for metal made from regular Bessemer pig, placing the firm many hundreds of tons behind in their deliveries, prevented Mr. Henry W. Oliver, Jr., from redeeming his promise to place his works at my disposal for further tests of high-phosphorus irons, until May 5th. Upon that date, I assumed charge of the operations in his steel-plant. Mr. Oliver had purchased Neshannock pig as a basis for a supply of phosphorus. My information is to the effect that this iron is made from low-grade Lake Superior ores and mill-cinder, the latter "ore" being utilized to about 40 per cent. of the total mixture. At all events the pig had quite as much phosphorus, and in as varying quantities, as the most exacting could desire. My experiments of last fall had well satisfied me as to the effect of from 0.35 to 0.55 per cent. of phosphorus in the Clapp Griffiths metal. Hence at this time my first trials were directed to

IN the formation of martensite in steel, it has been observed that the habit plane does not change continuously as the alloy content is varied. Instead, it appears that discrete habits correspond to certain ranges of composition. Greninger and Troiano' found that in low-, medium-, and high-carbon steels, the habits are approximately (1l1), (225), and (259), respectively.* The work of Mehl and Van Winkle2 indicated that the change from the (225) to the (259) habit is fundamentally a consequence of the lower transformation temperature rather than the higher carbon content. Also, Otte and Read3 observed that the habit plane orientation for a chrome-carbon steel scattered within a cone of semivertex angle of 5 deg, which was outside of the experimental error in the determination of the habit plane. These observations suggest the importance of investigating what factors in the crystallography of the formation of martensite account for the several types of habit and the inherent scatter in the precise orientation of the habit plane. A theoretical treatment of the austenite-martensite transformation has been given,4 which considers the total transformation distortion to be composed

Quasi-dynamic triaxial compression tests have been done for the first time at confining pressures to 7 kb. The intermediate strain-rate apparatus employs a gas loading cylinder which allows axial strain rates up to 102/sec on a sample 2 cm in diameter and 4 cm long. Samples can be deformed at confining pressures to 7 kb. Strain gages bonded to the loading piston and to the jacketed specimen allow internal measurements of load and sample strains respectively. Westerly granite has been deformed at confining pressures to 7 kb, room temperature, and axial strain rates of 10-2 to 1/sec. An increase of ultimate strength with confining pressure was found as expected. The ultimate strength was also found to vary directly with increasing strain rate; the rate of rise increases with confining pressure. Brittle deformation has dominated the sample behavior. Solenhofen limestone has been deformed at confining pressures to 3 kb, room temperature, and axial strain rates of 10- to 10/sec. The brittle-ductile transition was found to take place at about 1.5 kb confining pressure at a strain rate of 10/sec.

During the radium boom in the early part of the twentieth century, the basic chemistry of uranium was fairly well defined. Uranium production has progressed from the status of a radium by-product to a very important industry. With the ever increasing need for more efficient and cheaper methods of processing uranium ores, new techniques are being developed. Since uranium and vanadium often occur together in nature, the latter element will also be considered. As production rates, costs, and certain aspects of uranium chemistry are still classified by the Atomic Energy Commission, these will not be discussed. Domestic uranium deposits, in general, are composed of the minerals carnotite, which contains hexavalent uranium, and to a lesser extent, pitchblende and uraninite, which contain tetravalent uranium. Carnotite also usually contains vanadium. The uranium and vanadium contents of these ores vary considerably. The ores currently processed on the Colorado Plateau assay from 0.2 to 0.4 pct U and from trace amounts to 5.0 pct V. On the other hand, the phosphate rock deposits of the southeastern U. G. E. Agar (Manager, Minerals Processing Research, International Minerals & Chemical Corp., Skokie, III.) — The author notes a discrepancy between the parameters a and ß which are the slopes of the size distribution and energy-size modulus plots respectively. The reason for the discrepancy and the systematic decrease in the magnitude of a with grinding time is abundantly clear from the work of Fuerstenau8 on dry grinding. Fuerstenau shows very clearly in his Fig. 5 that at short retention times the parameter a is the same as that obtained by sizing over the complete size range. From this figure, it is obvious that sizing to only 400 mesh gave distribution curves similar to Mular's - that is, the slope apparently decreased systematically with increased grinding. As a consequence of the improper determination of a, the magnitude of ß given by Mular must be larger than the true value. In order to demonstrate this, the following Fig. 6 was taken from Mular's paper (his Fig. 1). A very limited development has been made of the coal-fields of this Territory. This is to be accounted for by the fact that a number of the coal-fields lack railroad transportation, by the distance of other fields from the consumers (due to restricted settlements), and finally by the poorer quality of a number of coals which have been mined as compared to others which can be economically imported into the Territory. The consumption of coal in Utah during 1886, outside of that used by the railway companies, was: Tons. Crushing and grinding of gypsum demands con- trolled processing to a fineness suitable for further treatment of the mineral into end products, and into various sizes of material which are themselves saleable products. The majority of gypsum tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for wallboard. Therefore, mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off intermediate products to meet various customer requirements. This forces companies into compromises at times in equipment installations. Normally, 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product are marketed and these are generally the fineness of material to be used as stucco for wallboard. These sizes are produced by controlled crushing, grinding and sizing. How Ore Characteristics Guide Processing First, gypsum as a mineral (CaS0;2H,O) is number two on the Mohs scale two of hardness; only talc is softer, Despite being soft, gypsum is tough, a factor which is of critical importance when developing equipment specifications. In addition, of the increasing volumes of rock handled, the associated and included impurities such as anhydrite, silica or lime- stones are found to be relatively abrasive.

Continental No. 1 This mine in Lisbon Valley has an orebody about 1200 ft long and varying from 250 to 70 ft wide. Average width is about 100 ft and stope heights average about 9 ft. It was developed by a 350-ft, 11º inclined shaft for trackless haulage, although a hoist and track are installed for auxiliary hoisting. Mining has been done from horizontal open stopes with random pillar support, using a HD5 tractor for mucking and a 4-wheel drive Gettman shuttle car for tramming. Slushers have been used to some extent in thin ore zones. Back support for stopes and haulage ways has been accomplished by rock bolts and landing mat. The most interesting feature of this mine has been pillar extraction. Mining was done under contract during the first year of operations with little regard for an orderly plan of stope layout or regularity of openings. Most of this work was done in the largest area of the orebody; consequently, pillar recovery has been accomplished under conditions which are far from ideal. However, a workable system has been developed which is competitive, both in cost and production rate, with open stoping.

The Zistersdorf field, near Vienna, continues to be Austria's only producing area. During the year the field was slightly extended by Rohol Gewinnungs A.G. in its Rag 2, which in April came in for an initial 120 tons daily through an 8-mm. (0.315-in.) bean, from the twelfth Sarmat sand at 1447 m. (4747 ft.). The amount of fluid produced by this well has remained essentially constant, but after the first several months water appeared and increased to some 50 per cent of the total. TWO subsequent extension wells, Rag 3 and Rag 5, northeast and west of Rag 2, found only water-bearing sands, and drilled through the main fault and into the Flysch at 1683 and 1401 m. (5522 and 4596 ft.), respectively. At the close of the year preparations were under way to deviate both wells away from the fault to test still deeper sands. Within the previously proven area of the field Erdolproduction's Gosting VII came in flowing a maximum of 440 tons daily, the highest individual production yet recorded. For years past I have traveled in quest of promising mining-properties, over almost impassable mountain-trails to remote places in the mining-regions, usually many miles from an assay-o5ce. If, upon examination, the fornlation and the ore-deposit appeared favorable, a quick determination of the value of my samples was necessary, in order that I might take intelligent action with reference to the acquisition of the property. A journey with my samples to civilized regions often meant weeks of delay, and perhaps loss of opportunity. How many, under similar circumstances, have returned with their assay-results from such a journey, only to find that some audacious speculator had optioned" the property! True, a first payment could have been made and the chances taken on the results; but experience has taught that rich-looking ore is not of necessity valuable. Personally, I would not hazard a ten-dollar bill on any property without first determining by assay the value of the ore. Recent publicity has focused attention on the hazard of lung cancer among uranium miners. Many mining people feel the danger has been exaggerated. Whether or not this is the case, the industry must thoroughly evaluate this potential hazard and take corrective measures to minimize the threat of radiation after-effects and to maintain the level of radiation in mines within the presently-accepted limit. The measurement and control of radon gas and its solid radioactive decay products, Po-218, Pb-214, Bi- 214, and Po-214, should be the one facet of most concern to uranium miners in any radiation control program. To illustrate the radioactivity involved with small quantities of radon gas, the activity from the decay products of five milliliters of radon gas (imagine a 5-ml vial) would be adequate to raise one cubic mile of air to seven times the recommended maximum working level of 300 [ ] (micro micro curies) per liter. This would be enough radioactivity to raise to the maximum working level a 6 x 8-ft drift which extended around the world 160 times. Obviously, a little radon gas goes a long way.

The Bunker Hill mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining district at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of Pb-Ag-Zn ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones and now covers an area approximately 1 mi long by 0.5 mi wide. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Ore production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tpd. A 2-mi adit, the Kellogg tunnel, at the 2500 elevation provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft. 50º-inclined shaft extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for main line track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical ft apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine.

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 million yr (m.y.) ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. A total of more than 200 km30f silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.0 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the south-central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later (-1 2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited silica, cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma, or connate water, or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury and other elements has not been identified.
