The notched-bar impact test has proved worth while in certain applications as a test for control of the quality or the heat-treatment of steel. In view of the serious thought that even so simple a test as the tensile test has evoked during the past years, it is not surprising that the notched-bar impact test should have inspired much experimental work. The correlation of the great number of data has not been successful, although steady progress has been made toward a better understanding of this test. Progress has been made, especially, in the isolation of the effects of the many variables that control the results. The stress system imposed on a specimen with a notch is so complicated and unpredictable that no simple evaluation of the test has been possible. Because of this uncertainty, many engineers hesitate to use the notched-bar impact test, and this attitude may well continue until a better understanding of the effects of the variables in the test are available. Without doubt, any additional data that may be presented should be accompanied by as complete a description of the - details of test as possible, so that it may be added to the general fund of information that is to serve as the basis for the theory of the notched-bar impact test. The many factors that may control the test results have been pointed out repeatedly. The importance of the effect of the type and dimensions of the specimen has been recognized. Most of the work reported by American investigators has been limited to small-size (Charpy) specimens tested as a simple beam; two types of notches (Fig. I) have been commonly used. Considerable data have also been presented by many investigators using a small specimen tested as a cantilever beam; this commonly being called the Izod test. Here, however, a shear component of stress makes the stress system even more complex than that present in the simple beam type of test, hence a critical analysis is difficult. Much work has also been reported by investigators using the tension type of specimen. A second variable that must be controlled is the testing temperature. An indication that the tests were performed at room temperature is not sufficient, since in many steels a variation of a few degrees in the actual testing temperature may be sufficient to give an entirely different range of results. Other factors, such as the composition and condition of the material being tested and the speed of test, should also be considered. A simple method, based upow density measurements, has been perfected in order to determine the critical temperature of liquid miscibility gaps. Applied to the Pb-Cu system, it yielded a value of 980"C for the critical tempevature of the miscibility gap in this system. In the Pb-Cu-As system, the immiscibility between lead and coppev evolves towards a miscibility gap be-tween lead and copper arsenides; the liquation temperatures were determined joy different avsenic contents and values up to 1065°C were found. Combining these results with those given by the clzemical analysis of liquid samples taken at dqj.event temperatures, it has been possible to make a cowzplete determination of the liquid miscibility gap in this ternary system. In the Pb-Cu-Fe-As system, a ternary miscibility gap has been discovered; for some compositions, the molten and slowly cooled alloys separated into three layers: an Fe-As alloy, a Cu-As alloy, and a lead-rich layer. ThE Pb-Cu-Fe-As system is of interest for the study of the behavior of speiss or arsenical alloys in the lead blast furnace. The speisses produced in lead metallurgy generally have complex compositions, but they may be considered, in a simplified way, as a mixture of copper, iron, nickel, and cobalt arsenides; there is often an excess of metallic constituants, and lead is also present. Speisses liquate from lead at various temperatures according to their composition; according to industrial experience, iron speisses are already distinctly separated from lead bullion at temperatures of the order of 1100°C, whereas copper speisses only begin to liquate from lead at much lower temperatures, near their solidification points, which were never accurately determined until now. Besides these considerations of practical interest, the present study is of importance for the knowledge of liquid miscibility gaps. Particularly the data of the literature about critical temperatures of liquation are incomplete and present sometimes considerable disparities; a method has been perfected in the present work to determine these temperatures with accuracy. MISCIBILITY GAP OF THE LEAD-COPPER SYSTEM Review of Literature. The generally admitted outline of the Pb-Cu equilibrium diagram is shown by Fig. 1. This figure, with its numerical indications, is taken from the review of Hansen and ~nderko;' compositions are given in weight percent, as will be the case in the remainder of this paper. Between 36 and 87 pct Pb, Pb-Cu alloys separate into two layers, in the liquid state. The critical temperature of liquation has been much disputed in earlier studies, where values up to 1500°C were claimed; but a reliable study of ~ohnen,' based upon differential thermal analysis, gave a value of 990°C; this rather low value was verified by a recent study of Schiirmann and Kaune? based upon thermodynamical properties of the Pb-Cu alloys, which predicted a value of 1002°C. Liquid miscibility gaps were also studied by means of chemical analyses. Satisfactory results were generally obtained with the method consisting in taking samples of the two liquid layers in equilibrium and submitting them to chemical analysis; however, this method becomes delicate near the critical temperature. EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

A general survey of the mechanical properties of commercially pure beryllium fabricated from powder by vacuum hot pressing and other consolidation methods is presented. The effect of fabrication method, grain size, strain rate, and directionality upon both room and elevated temperature tensile properties is reported. BERYLLIUM metal, in spite of its rather restricted use, has been the object of attention for many researchers in the past half century. However, such work was performed on special experimental lots of metal made in small quantities by a variety of reduction methods. Not until 1946 was there a substantial production of beryllium metal, and not until 1950 was there a steady production of a commercially standard beryllium in the United States. This output was both the result of a requirement of the Atomic Energy Commission for a high grade beryllium of consistent quality and the development of a powder metallurgy process, by the Brush Beryllium Co., known originally as Process Q, which yielded a fine grained beryllium suitable for fabrication. Because this powder metallurgy product, known as QMV, superceded other types of metal made previously and represents the great majority of beryllium in use today, it seems worthwhile to present the results of studies on the mechanical properties of this metal as currently made. To the design engineer and the metallurgist, beryllium has extremely interesting properties. It is as light as magnesium alloys while having a stiffness modulus 40 pct greater than steel and a strength-weight ratio superior to titanium and aluminum alloys and aircraft steels. The melting point is high, 1287°C (2348°F), and it has good corrosion resistance both in air and water. Also, it is highly transparent to X-rays and has good heat and electrical conductivity (electric conductivity is greater than 40 pct of Cu). To the atomic energy program beryllium is considered a valuable material because of its low neutron-capture cross section and high neutron-scattering cross section which make it a good moderator and reflector for the lower velocity neutrons. A major technical difficulty limiting the use of beryllium, especially in structural applications, has been its notch sensitivity and consequent room temperature brittleness. Kaufmann, Gordon, and Lillie1 have reported their work on the mechanical properties of beryllium performed from 1946 to 1950. They studied the room and elevated temperature properties of cast and extruded beryllium and extruded electrolytic flake, Table I. Cast and extruded alloys of 85 to 99 pct Be were tested also. They found that extruded metal developed good strength and appreciable ductility in the extrusion direction and that thermal treatment and alloying provided little improvement in mechanical properties. They concluded that preferred orientation and fine grain size were the means of obtaining optimum tensile properties in beryllium. Other investigators have measured and commented on one of the most striking mechanical properties of beryllium, namely, its abnormally low Poisson's ratio.2 Udy, Shaw, and Boulger3 presented the latest published survey on properties of beryllium but their information is based only on published data available before April 1949 and cites little information on metal fabricated by powder metallurgy

THE compiler, or author, of the Probierbücblein is not known, and the date of its first printing is uncertain. It was obviously not written by an assayer who wished to give a coherent description of his craft for the instruction of others; this was left for Biringuccio first to do. It is easy to believe that originally the Probierbücblein was a random collection from various sources of information useful to an assayer, probably gathered by one of the profession for his own use. It must remain a matter of speculation whether this was shown to a printer, who recognized the opportunity to turn an honest penny and made an inept attempt to give the manuscript the appearance of a coherent account by writing a preface and arranging the various items in somewhat logical sequence, or whether the assayer him- self started this job and was prevented from finishing it. That some sections of the book, especially near the be ginning, present an almost continuous story, while others are chaotic in their arrangement; that several paragraphs are printed more than once in different places; that there are paragraph headings, for which the text was never written, or lost, followed by irrelevant information-all this seems evidence of a job unfinished and points to a publisher's offering for the public's quick money. The demand must have been brisk, for metal working was a profitable profession, and the jeweler who was working with metals but did not care to become completely trained in assay methods would jump at the chance of acquiring easy knowledge. Even the great Agricola has whole sections obviously plagiarized from the Probierbücblein. Neither Biringuccio nor Ercker shows any direct influence, though they and all subsequent metallurgists will in some degree be affected by

Electrical methods and instruments for geophysical exploration have been almost exclusively applied, during these years of development of the art, by a few companies specializing in this field. The control of patents, the cost of the instruments and the general lack of published information on details of field procedure and office interpretation have given these owners a monopoly in carrying out electrical surveys. The development of the Megger Ground Tester1 seems likely to change this situation, and to enable mining engineers and geologists, without special training in geophysics, to carry out simple reconnaissance electrical surveys. Nevertheless, the need for such special training and experience in planning surveys and interpreting their results remains, and probably i always will remain, indispensable for a successful outcome. The unique thing about, the Megger Ground Tester, which gives rise to this hope for its general use, is its simplicity of operation. The four binding posts of the instrument are connected by insulated wires to four stakes driven into the ground at appropriate points. The crank of the Megger is then turned, and the resistance of the ground between the two inside stakes is read directly, in ohms, by the deflection of a pointer over a scale. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Fundamentally, the principle of operation is that of determining the resistance of a four-terminal conductor, as applied by Frank Wenner to the measurement of earth resistivity. "A four-terminal conductor is a conductor provided with two terminals to which current leads may be connected and two terminals to which potential leads may be connected. The unidirectional solidification of dendrites containing central twin planes was studied in A1-Ti alloys. Once nucleated, the twinned dendrites are a Twore ejficient form for solute redistribution and therefore grow in preference to the normal columnar dendvites. Comparison of these twinned dendrites to adjacent colunmar dendrites by means of decanting experinzents and electron-probe rnicvoarmlysis indicates that these special dendrites grow with less undercooling than normal dendrites. These findings are further supported by the effect of forced convection on the dendrite morphologies. COMMERCIAL semicontinuous cast ingots of most aluminum alloys frequently exhibit large grains which appear to be composed of hundreds of parallel, continuous, thin lamellae. This structure has been termed "basaltic",' "fiederkristall", or, commonly, "feathery grain". The lamellae are 'about 100 p thick, several inches long, and each lamella contains a central (111) coherent twin boundary. The feathery grain has been reported to have a (112) direction2 and a (110) direction4 in the twin plane parallel to the casting direction, in contrast with the usual columnar structure where a (100) direction predominates. Aust et uZ.~ proposed that the twin boundaries were growth twins nucleated by stacking faults on the octahedral planes. chalmers6 has suggested that feathery grain may grow by a re-entrant edge mechanism, as proposed by wagner7 for twinned dendritic growth in germanium. Cahn et ~1.~ have concluded that the occurrence of feathery grain is evidence of some form of lateral layer growth rather than the atomically continuous growth normally observed in metals. The postulates by Chalmers and Cahn would seem to be contradicted by the work of Nakao~"' who showed that feathery grain only occurs when growth rates are high and the aluminum contains some solute. Specifically, Nakao found that in order to obtain feathery grain, in small castings solidified unidirec-tionally upward, the rate of growth must be above 2.4 cm per min and a critical solute concentration must be present. Below this solute concentration the grain structure was totally columnar. The critical solute concentration was found to be approximately: 0.04 wt pct Ti, 2 wt pct Cu or Mg, and 8 wt pct Zn. As pointed out by Chalmers it is not obvious why a twin-plane re-entrant edge mechanism would occur in aluminum which is thought to have a diffuse solid-liquid interface. The present experiments were undertaken to determine the growth mechanisms in- volved and to study the solute segregation in more detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys ranging in composition from 0.05 to 0.23 wt pct Ti* were prepared from 99.9 pct pure Ti and 99.993 pct pure Al. Two-hundred-gram samples of A1-Ti binary alloys were solidified unidirectionally and vertically upward from a water-cooled copper base, in a heated insulated mold. The 1-in.-diam, 6-in.-length mold was made of Marinite (manufactured by Johns-Manville Co.). The mold was attached to a 24-in. pivoted arm such that by dropping a weight the mold was rotated 180 deg, throwing the liquid metal from the solid. In this way, the solid-liquid interface was revealed by decanting. A sketch of the decanting mold is shown in Fig. 1. The alloy was poured into the mold at temperatures ranging from 680" to 750°C, partially solidified by water cooling from the base, and decanted after a measured time interval. Growth rates for each metal-pouring temperature were calculated from solidification-time vs length solidified curves. Temperature gradients in the melt were measured using four No. 34 gage thermocouples which protruded into the mold cavity. Grain orientations were determined by X-ray diffraction using Laue back-reflection techniques. Grain substructures were examined metallographically, using polarized light, by applying a thin epitaxial anodic film to polished sections after the method of Hone and pearson." Titanium micro segregation was measured by electron-probe microanalysis using a NORELCO AMR/~ with a mica crystal and proportional-flow counter. THE performance of welded structures is closely associated with the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of the steel from which they are made. A low transition temperature is desirable because it indicates that the steel is less likely to fail suddenly at low ambient temperatures. Structures such as bridges, ships, storage tanks, and pipelines are usually made from hot rolled semikilled steel. Changes in rolling practice or chemical composition appear to be the most practical methods for improving the toughness of such materials. This results from the fact that production is likely to be seriously curtailed if improvements were obtained by recourse to heat treatment or complete deoxidation. This paper discusses the effect of variations in carbon and manganese contents on the properties of semikilled steels. The transition temperature, a property to which considerable importance is attached, varies with specimen configuration, testing method, and criterion of performance. Both the Navy tear test' and the keyhole Charpy test were used in the investigation. According to the terms used by Vanderbeck and Gensamer,V he tear test was used to measure a fracture transition and the Charpy test to measure a ductility transition. In either case the specimens absorb considerably less breaking energy in tests below the transition temperature than in tests above the transition temperature. Decreasing the testing temperature of notched-bar specimens seems to be equivalent in its effect to increasing the severity of loading on fabricated structures. Therefore, structures built from steels exhibiting lower transition temperatures in laboratory tests are expected to be less susceptible to sudden brittle fractures in service. Consequently, changes in composition which lowered the transition temperature of the experimental steels were judged desirable. Materials and Methods The steels for this study were made in a laboratory induction furnace and rolled to 3/4 in. plate, using a finishing temperature of 1850°F. Precautions taken to insure reproducible melting and testing practices are discussed in detail elsewhere.' All tests were made on hot rolled steels. The analyses of the experimental steels are given in Table I. The list includes steels with manganese contents ranging from 0.21 to 1.46 pct, at each of five carbon levels. The phosphorus, silicon, sulphur, and nitrogen contents of the steels are reasonably constant. The tensile and notched-bar properties of the experimental steels are presented in Table 11. Both upper and lower yield points are listed, and all values are averages for duplicate specimens. Transition temperatures based on three criteria are given. The keyhole Charpy transition temperatures are the temperatures at which the energy-temperature curves based on averages of four specimens cross the 20 and 12 ft-lb levels. Both definitions of Charpy transition temperatures have been used by other investigators. Charpy tests were made at intervals of 10°F, using a pendulum with an available striking energy of 220 ft-lb and a velocity of 18.1 ft per sec. The specimens were oriented parallel to the rolling direction and notched normal to the surface of the plates. The tear test transition temperatures are based on the usual' criterion of the highest temperature at which at least one of four specimens exhibits brittle behavior. The dimensions of the tear test specimens are shown in Fig. 1. The specimen is loaded eccentrically in tension, with pin and shackle fixtures, through the large holes while submerged in a liquid bath at the proper temperature. A specimen developing a fracture area with less than 50 pct shear or ductile texture is classed as brittle. Tear tests were made at intervals of 10°F.

ANY laboratory corrosion test, as judged from the practical point of view, is valuable only to the extent that it foretells what will, in all probability, occur in service. Such a test is most properly to be considered as a "pilot test, " that is, a test which indicates the direction along which action may be expected to occur rather than as a truly quantitative test which would be expected to tell just how and to what extent the action would proceed. It is generally recognized that laboratory corrosion tests should be chosen with particular reference to the character of service expected for any particular type of metal, so far as it can be foreseen. Even when this requirement has been fulfilled, however, the question whether the actual service behavior of the material is in accordance and general agreement with predictions based upon such laboratory tests is always a pertinent one. The information available in the technical literature bearing on the correlation between the service behavior of metals from the corrosion standpoint, and the results obtained with the same metals in laboratory corrosion tests is very meager, indeed. The results which have been obtained in weather-exposure tests of sheet duralumin which form the body of this discussion are presented here for their bearing on this particular phase of the problem of the corrosion resistance of duralumin. Although the exposure tests described have not been completed, in the sense that all of the tests, in the series initially laid down, have been accomplished, still the general trend shown by the results is so clear that a number of definite conclusions at this stage (subject, of course, to possible modification in the light of later results) are believed to be warranted. The tests reported upon here form one phase of the much broader study of this subject which has been under way for several years in which the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy Department, the Army Air Corps and the Bureau of Standards have cooperated. Previous studies of activation in flotation have directed attention to the action of the activator on the mineral to be floated rather than to the relationship of the activator to the collector. The latter phase of the problem, however, seems to have definite scientific, if not also practical, interest. In the investigation reported in this paper, experiments were carried out, largely with quartz as subject, barium as activator, and oleate as collector. The results obtained indicate that a I: I ratio of collector ion to activator ion gives optimum results, and that a 2:1 ratio almost fails to achieve activation and flotation. Yet, a 2:I ratio would have been expected on stoichiometric grounds, had the coating been a normal salt of the activator ion with the collector ion, since barium is a divalent cation and oleate a monovalent anion. To interpret and rationalize the observations, considerations of the crystal chemistry of quartz are helpful. The point of view to which these considerations lead may be of general applicability to systems involving suspensions of solids in liquids; they confirm that an adsorbed coating is inescapable. Apparatus and Supplies The experimental work consisted in barium-ion abstraction tests, hydrogen-ion and hydroxyl-ion abstraction tests, flotation tests, and determinations of the surface of the crushed quartz. The flotation machine was built according to the design of D. W. McGlashan.* It consists of a drill press in which the bit has been replaced by a stainless-steel impellor surrounding a stainless-steel sta-tor, as in the Fagergren laboratory machine. The air intake is controlled by a valve, and the cell consists of a beaker. The quartz was obtained from vein quartz stored in large chunks. It was first crushed to 20 mesh, then sized on a 28-mesh screen. The 20 to 28-mesh size alone was retained for use. This size was freed of coarse iron by passage through a Ball-Norton magnetic separator, bleached with boiling hydrochloric acid to remove residual abraded iron, washed with distilled water until the washings were thoroughly free of ferrous, ferric, and excess hydrogen ion, and stored in covered Pyrex beakers under water until used. The barium was used as barium chloride, Baker's analyzed C. P. The oleate was used as sodium oleate. It was prepared from sodium hydroxide, Baker's analyzed C. P., and oleic acid purified by R. R. de Arellano3 in the laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The roof truss as a means of secondary or supplemental mine roof support has enjoyed increasing acceptance in recent years, particularly in bituminous coal mines. In those entries where long life is required or doubtful performance from other forms of support seems likely, trusses in many cases have provided the necessary protection for continuing operations. Although relatively expensive and time-consuming in their installation, trusses, particularly with the new resin point anchor system, appear to be justifying their higher premium. It seems inevitable that techniques and equipment for installing them within the cycle will soon be developed. The actual mechanism by which trusses contribute to the stability of a roof is, as yet, poorly understood, and it may be that more than a single mechanism is involved. There are, however, a number of useful observations which can be made concerning the structural behavior of the truss itself, based solely on the mechanics of rigid and deformable bodies. The purpose of this article is to present some of these observations, particularly relating to friction in the system. A few speculations concerning the roof must, of course, be made. From a knowledge of the structural behavior, some insight into the truss-roof interaction may be gained. The concept of the truss is quite simple. As shown in [Fig. 1], it consists of two inclined chords (usually at 45') anchored in holes drilled in the roof over the ribs. A horizontal chord is formed connecting the exposed ends of the inclined chords, either with a third piece or by bending extensions of the inclined chords until they meet in the middle. A distinction can be made between active and passive chords of a truss depending upon the manner of installation. If the inclined chords are fully grouted and the horizontal chord is merely attached to them, it may reasonably be assumed that no significant forces exist in the truss until the roof begins to work. Such would be a completely passive system. On the other hand, if the inclined chords are anchored only at their upper extremities and the horizontal chord is formed in such a way that all three chords can be pretensioned to a significant portion of their tensile strengths then the truss may be regarded as fully active. Combinations of active and passive chords are also possible. * The discussion here is confined to the fully active truss such as the Birmingham steel rod system or the Galis wire rope truss. The purpose of an accurate underground pressure survey is to obtain a pressure gradient along the circuit or circuits under investigation. The pressure gradient shows the rate of pressure drop between various observation points along a circuit. This determines excessive resistance regions and the economic feasibility of correcting such conditions by cleaning airways, driving additional airways, or modifying existing airways. A pressure gradient is useful for predicting the effect on other parts of the circuit when adjusting the air regulation on any one split or when planning a field airshaft or slope or a new drift to the outcrop. A single-compartment airshaft often produces disappointing results because it relievcs only a part of the circuit instead of the over-all mine pressure. It is valuable to know how the circuit pressure drop is distributed. The underground pressure survey is used also to determine the friction coefficient for various types of airway. High precision work is required to establish these vital data for predicting the characteristics of mine pressure volume when projecting new mine developments. Methods Regardless of the type of instrument used to conduct a circuit pressure survey, the work should preferably be performed at a time when the mine is idle, in order to avoid air-flow disturbances from moving trips and cages or from the opening or closing of trap doors. Preferably the survey should be made when the barometer is comparatively steady, to restrict variation in the air specific weight at observation stations while the circuit is traversed. The two most commonly used instruments for underground pressure surveys are: (I) the altimeter; (2) the inclined manometer with hose extensions. The altimeter is sufficiently accurate for determining the underground pressure gradient and is preferable to the nianometer for such work because of greater flexibility and shorter time required for the traverse. With the altimeter it is possible to select more widely separated observation stations than is practical with the manometer, with its restricted hose extension lengths. The altimeter also permits easier travel along haulage roads between airway observation stations, avoiding badly obstructed airways. The inclined manometer is more reliable than the altimeter for establishing friction coefficients in mine airways. Manometer readings are unaffected by differences in elevations between stations, which require corrections to altimeter data. The manometer provides direct reading without temperature correction, which may or may not be true with the altimeter, depending upon the make of instrument used. This is the third paper in a series on the diffusion of zinc in alpha brass.' At the time of the first paper it was accepted that diffusion in a substitutional type of solid solution depended upon an equal interchange of solute and solvent atoms across the diffusion interface (or past a given lattice reference point). Discrepancies in the size of the areas under the diffusion curves on each side of the interface, if observed, were explained on some other basis than the fact that the solute atoms might cross the diffusion interface without an equal number of solvent atoms diffusing across the interface in the opposite direction. The second paper presented evidence indicating that zinc atoms in alpha brass diffuse across the interface more rapidly in one direction than the copper atoms diffuse across the interface in the opposite direction. This phenomenon forced the interface to move in the opposite direction of the diffusion of zinc atoms to provide space for the additional zinc atoms dissolved in the alpha brass. That the interface and columnar grain structure on one side would remain intact during this mass movement was not expected; how ever, it is gratifying that they did. While the evidence was sufficiently satisfying to the author, it was decided that additional experiments were in order to prove that zinc diffuses more rapidly than copper in alpha brass. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of these experiments. Procedure A bar of 70-30 wrought brass was selected, to avoid the relatively large volume change in going from beta to alpha brass as in the previous investigation. A bar 7 in. (18-cm.)* long and about 3/4 in. (1.9 cm.) wide was surface ground and polished with abrasive paper on plate glass to 0.4184 0.0002 in. (1.062j + 0.0005 cm.) thick. Six0.00j-in. (0.013-cm.) diameter molybdenum wires, chosen because of their very low solubility in coppcr and alpha brass, were strctched lengthwise along each of the two plane surfaces. Glass tubes placed at right angles to the wires every 1/2 in. held the wires tightly against the brass. The sample was then emersed in an acid copper sulphate plating bath and electroplated to a depth of about 0.020 in. (0.050 cm.) copper on all sides. The purpose of an accurate underground pressure survey is to obtain a pressure gradient along the circuit or circuits under investigation. The pressure gradient shows the rate of pressure drop between various observation points along a circuit. This determines excessive resistance regions and the economic feasibility of correcting such conditions by cleaning airways, driving additional airways, or modifying existing airways. A pressure gradient is useful for predicting the effect on other parts of the circuit when adjusting the air regulation on any one split or when planning a field airshaft or slope or a new drift to the outcrop. A single-compartment airshaft often produces disappointing results because it relievcs only a part of the circuit instead of the over-all mine pressure. Previous studies of activation in flotation have directed attention to the action of the activator on the mineral to be floated rather than to the relationship of the activator to the collector. The latter phase of the problem, however, seems to have definite scientific, if not also practical, interest. In the investigation reported in this paper, experiments were carried out, largely with quartz as subject, barium as activator, and oleate as collector. The results obtained indicate that a I: I ratio of collector ion to activator ion gives optimum results, and that a 2:1 ratio almost fails to achieve activation and flotation. Yet, a 2:I ratio would have been expected on stoichiometric grounds, had the coating been a normal salt of the activator ion with the collector ion, since barium is a divalent cation and oleate a monovalent anion. To interpret and rationalize the observations, considerations of the crystal chemistry of quartz are helpful. The point of view to which these considerations lead may be of general applicability to systems involving suspensions of solids in liquids; they confirm that an adsorbed coating is inescapable. Apparatus and Supplies The experimental work consisted in barium-ion abstraction tests, hydrogen-ion and hydroxyl-ion abstraction tests, flotation tests, and determinations of the surface of the crushed quartz. The flotation machine was built according to the design of D. W. McGlashan.* It consists of a drill press in which the bit has been replaced by a stainless-steel impellor surrounding a stainless-steel sta-tor, as in the Fagergren laboratory machine. The air intake is controlled by a valve, and the cell consists of a beaker. The quartz was obtained from vein quartz stored in large chunks. It was first crushed to 20 mesh, then sized on a 28-mesh screen. The 20 to 28-mesh size alone was retained for use. This size was freed of coarse iron by passage through a Ball-Norton magnetic separator, bleached with boiling hydrochloric acid to remove residual abraded iron, washed with distilled water until the washings were thoroughly free of ferrous, ferric, and excess hydrogen ion, and stored in covered Pyrex beakers under water until used. The barium was used as barium chloride, Baker's analyzed C. P. The oleate was used as sodium oleate. It was prepared from sodium hydroxide, Baker's analyzed C. P., and oleic acid purified by R. R. de Arellano3 in the laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. , This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running— the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak of the fire—the air shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to be drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast, as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned back and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved. There were 220 men in the mine that night, and all but 25 were hoisted to the surface within 30 min. after the discovery of the fire. The investigation of solid-state diffusion phenomena may lead to much information concerning binary alloys. In particular, a study of the concentration gradients present in multiphase diffusion couples can lead to the determination of the solubility limits of the single-phase fields in the phase diagram. The specific concentration gradient which results from the heat treatment of a diffusion couple depends not only upon the time and temperature of diffusion, but also upon the number of phases existing in equilibrium at the diffusion temperature. Such concentration gradients possess sharp discontinuities whose terminal points correspond to the solubilities existing at the limits of the two-phase field in the phase diagram at the diffusion temperature. In general, there will be a discontinuity in the concentration curve for each two-phase field which exists in the phase diagram between the concentration limits of the couple. A number of investigators have analyzed the gradients present in multiphase diffusion couples. 1-8 The iron-titanium phase diagram exhibits a y loop in the temperature range from 900" to 1400°C, and the limit of the a + y field lies at some composition which is less than 1 wt pct Ti for any temperature. It was felt that a diffusion study could yield values not only for the diffusion coefficients involved, but also for the chemical solubilities in the phase diagram. The concentration gradients were analyzed by an X-ray absorption technique developed by Ogilvie.6 The absorption of a monochromatic X-ray beam is measured in steps parallel to the diffusion direction and the resulting intensity gradients are transformed into concentration gradients by applying the laws of X-ray absorption in a binary system. This technique has been applied by ogilvie6 to the systems Ni-Au, Cu-Au, Fe-Cr, and Ni-Cr; by Gelles7 to the systems Be-Fe, and Be-Ni and by Hilliarde to the system Al-Zn. Linear X-Ray Absorption Analysis—The use of X-ray absorption analysis as a tool for determining concentration gradients arises from the fact that the beam is absorbed according to the quantity and species of elements present in the sample and not according to their state of aggregation. This method is more advantageous than the chemical analysis of machined layers since it is less time consuming and less expensive and can analyze a very small area. IF a homogeneous binary alloy (A + B) is analyzed with two different monochromatic X-ray beams I0(2) and lo(2) the following relation between the transmitted intensities, the intrinsic absorption coefficients of A and B for the two different radiations and the weight fraction of each element may be derived.' [1] is independent of specimen thickness and density, but requires that either element A or B possess an absorption edge between the wavelength limits of the two monochromatic beams. I NTRODUCTION The injection of energy in the form of heat into an oil-bearing formation as a means of increasing the recovery of oil has been the subject of much discussion and experimentation as far back as 1920. The ideas have ranged from the injection of steam to the direct use of electricity as a means of getting thermal energy into a formation. However, most laboratory and field studies have been confined to the process whereby a portion of the crude in the reservoir is burned to generate the necessary heat to increase the mobility of the oil by reducing its viscosity. A recent paper by W. L. Martin, et al.', described the results of a number of laboratory experiments in which the combustion process was studied in a sandpack. Studies such as this indicate that with the temperatures involved, the oil is partially coked in this process and it is this coke which provides the fuel for combustion. The combustion of this residual coke can be analyzed theoretically by applying simple stoich-iometric principles to the combustion process. It is the purpose of this paper to compare the results reported in these experiments with those obtained from theoretical considerations. The variables studied by Martin, et al, among others, include combustion front velocity, air flux, oxygen utilization, fuel concentration, ratio of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in combustion gases, and the hydrogen:carbon ratio of the residual fuel. All these variables come into consideration when the stoichiometry of the combustion process is studied. The experimental conditions and results are tabulated in Tables 3 and 4 of Ref. 1. For purposes of comparison with calculated results, it was necessary to change the units of a number of the variables. MetallURgical research has discovered many an alloy possessing properties not combined in any single metal, and progress still consists chiefly in the investigation and utilization of alloys. In the case of iron, the demands of automobiles, high-speed machines and high-duty engines have led to the production of special iron alloys which will meet any reasonable specifications in that field. In like manner, the bronzes, brasses and other alloys of copper have been brought to remarkable perfection, and for nearly every industrial purpose some alloy has been , found more suitable than the pure metal. Less complete success has attended the attempt to find substitutes for gold, platinum, and the other precious metals. Indeed, it is not likeiy that a material can be produced which, will possess all the properties of any one of them; yet it is reasonable to hope that, for any given use, the properties required may be found in some less expensive material. Thus, in incandescent electric lamps, the wire passing through the thick glass neck of the bulb was, until recently, almost universally made of platinum, for the single reason that no other known material, suitable as a conductor, had the same coefficient of expansion as glass. But a comparatively recent investigation of the iron-nickel series1 has shown that alloys of those metals maybe produced, the coefficient of expansion of which can be accurately controlled between that of iron or nickel and zero. Thus, in that particular industry, a substitute for platinum has been found. According to statistical reports, not only considerable quantities of gold and iridium, but also more than one-third of the annual supply of platinum, are used (and, in the nature of the case, irrevocably lost) by dentists. Platinum is thus employed in several forms. As a thin foil, it serves various purposes for which its high melting point, pliability, chemical resistance, and other properties—including the ease with which it may be soldered—are invaluable.
