The Bougainville ore body was discovered in 1964 by a partnership of Conzinc Rio Tinto of Australia and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. The ore body is a porphyry copper in a fine-grained quartz diorite, which intrudes andesite volcanics and is located at an elevation of about 2, 000 ft in the Crown Prince Range of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. Mineralization is predominantly chalcopyrite with some bornite and some gold and silver present. Rainfall in the area amounts to 200 in. (5. 08 m) per year. An active volcano is situated only 24 miles (38.4 km) from the mine, and all structures were designed to resist seismic shocks. An interesting and unique feature of the Bougainville operation was that the overburden was stripped with hydraulic monitors. Bougainville Copper, at 90,000 tpd, is the largest copper concentrator to be designed and constructed at one time; and besides the twin 54 in. by 74 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratories, it features seven 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and fourteen 7 ft shorthead crushers, in addition to nine 18 ft diameter by 21 ft long (5. 5 m by 6. 4 m), 4250 hp, single -stage ball mills. During the design stage of the Bougainville primary crushing plant, several alternates were studied because the ore was expected to break with the production of large amounts of small-sized particles but with a minimum of fines. These alternates included two 54 in. by 74 in. gyratories with grizzlies, two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories, and one 72 in. by 96 in. gyratory, the latter two installations without grizzlies. The two 54 in. units with grizzlies were finally selected as giving good reliability and the ability to handle the large amounts of small material in the feed. As originally installed, grizzly bars were set at 8 in. (203 mm); but, in an effort to perform more interparticle crushing in the primary and less rock-on-steel crushing in the secondaries and tertiaries, a test is underway (1976) to determine the effect of using 6 in. (152 mm) grizzly spacings (see write -up on Anaconda's crusher at Butte). The Bougainville ore is mined with 17 cu yd (13 cu m) shovels and hauled in 105, 170, and 210 st trucks to the crushers, which are equipped for two-side dumping. Up to 40% of the ore passes the grizzlies, which are equipped with splitters; and additional horizontal splitter bars are located directly above the spider caps. Because of the grizzlies, the crushers are supported by unique U-shaped enclosures, which are in turn supported by the end and center walls of the installation.

This paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. Capacity Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a given time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: Tr = TR80K'K" [I] in which Tr, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific-gravity range—2.5 to 2.7—T should be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppardl has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5:=:0,6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:o.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for —I50 + 200-mesh pyrite to be I.4: I:0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciabie tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product. For several years barite (BaSO4) production has topped such better known minerals as feldspar and fluorspar in annual tonnage and is now well established among our foremost nonmetallic industries. Description Of widespread occurrence in the United States, barite is relatively soft (hardness, 2.5 to 3.5), inert, heavy (specific gravity, 4.5), and is also called "barytes" (sometimes pronounced "bear-i-tease"), "heavy spar" and "tiff." It occurs with granular and earthy structure but usually has coarse, orthorhombic crystallization. It is commonly white, and although occurring in various shades of red, yellow, and gray, barite always gives a white streak and can be scratched by the ordinary prospecting pick. Its softness and weight are usually sufficient to establish field identification. Another aid is the "rotten egg" odor of H2S which sometimes emanates from freshly fractured surfaces. Barite can be readily distinguished from two other minerals which have somewhat similar occurrences and characteristics. The relatively rare celestite, strontium sulphate, has a specific gravity slightly less than 4.00 and gives a distinctively crimson color in a flame test. The very rare wither-ite, barium carbonate, has a specific gravity of 4.3 but readily effervesces with dilute hydrochloric acid. Occurrence All known commercially important barite deposits in the United States occur as re- placements or cavity fillings in schists, shales, limestones, dolomites, and quart-zites, or as residual deposits from such formations. In Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Missouri, high-grade barite is recovered as fragments from residual clays covering quartzites and dolomites. In Arkansas, Nevada, and California, barite, usually of lower grade, is mined from replacement deposits. These seven states contributed the entire production reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1945 as given in Table I. Such a large part of this undistributed production came from California that that state probably outranked both Nevada and Tennessee. For the second consecutive year Arkansas was the leading producing state, particularly worthy of note because there was no commercial production of barite there prior to 1941 and because the entire production of Arkansas has come from one large deposit which is being operated by two companies. In the uniform of his country for the second time, Harry Phillip Stolz. Chairman of the A.I.M.E. Petroleum Division, holds a commission as Lieutenant-Commander in the Naval Reserve and is attached to the office of Inspector of Naval Petroleum Reserves in California. During World War I he left his studies at Stanford University to join the Army and was granted a commission as Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1938 when he resigned to accept a commission as a member of the Naval Petroleum Reserves Advisory Board. Born in San Francisco Jan. 29,1899, where his father had lived since 1880, he was in that city during the turbulent year of 1906 where the city was ravaged by fire and earthquake.

CHARLIE WARNER, Chairman of the Petroleum Division, is no stranger to the problems of the oil industry or to those of the Petroleum Division, after more than 25 years of experience in locating and producing oil and more than 22 years of membership in the Institute. He was born at Jefferson, N. Y.. April 27, 1894, and educated in the public schools of New York State and at Cornell University where he studied geology and allied sciences from 1913 to 1917 and received a B.A. degree. Immediately upon completion of this training, he was employed by the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. as a field geologist in Oklahoma and Kansas. Two years later he became district geologist for the Emerald Oil Co. in Oklahoma and Kansas, and in 1920 he rejoined the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. in the capacity of district geologist in Oklahoma. In September of 1921 he began his association with the Houston Oil Co. of Texas. He was district manager for the company in the Mid-Continent area until 1932 when he was transferred to the head office at Houston, where he became superintendent of the land and lease department in 1934 and was elected a director of the company in 1941. In these capacities, and also as petroleum engineer for the company, he keeps in intimate touch with all phases of field activity and with the regulation of the industry by State and Federal agencies.

The dihedral angles of the solid-liquid interfaces were measured at various temperatures above the solidus and the interfacial energies calculated when small additions of copper, indium, lithium, magnesium, antimony, and silicon were made to an aluminum alloy containing 3 pct Sn. When the results were compared with those of the Al-Sn alloy some differences were found which could be interpreted in terms of the ability of the added element to enter into solution or form intermetallic compounds with the aluminum and tin. It was shown that in some cases considerable changes in the shape of intergvanular liquid films can be brought about by comparatively small compositional changes in the alloy. DURING the melting or solidification of an alloy a temperature range is usually found where the presence of a liquid phase may be detected at the grain boundaries of a solid. It is believed that the presence of this liquid phase is responsible for hot tearing in castings and welds and hot shortness in the working of some alloys at elevated temperatures. Rosenberg, Flemings, and Taylor1 in a study of the solidification of aluminum castings have indicated the importance of intergranular liquid films and shown that their shape and distribution at the end of solidification effect the hot tearing characteristics of the material. The shape of such intergranular liquid films are determined largely by the ratio between the solid-liquid interfacial energy (yLS) and the grain boundary energy (ySS). A measure of this ratio (yLS/ySS , relative interfacial energy) is the dihedral angle 8. The dihedral angle 0 is related to the relative interfacial energy by the following expression: Rogerson and Borland 2 have also suggested that the shape of the intergranular liquid is an important factor in determining the susceptibility of a material to hot shortness. They showed that on a comparative basis materials having the lowest dihedral angles at a given temperature gave the greatest severity of cracking. They stated that liquid in the form of globules should be less harmful than liquid in the form of extensive films as more intergranular cohesion should be possible. Rogerson and Borlland 2 also showed that the susceptibility of an A1-Sn alloy to hot cracking can be reduced by small additions of cad- mium. It was found that the cadmium gave an increase in the dihedral angle at all temperatures. Ikeuye and smith3 investigated changes in the dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy with temperature for a number of ternary alloys formed when small additions of bismuth, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc were made to an A1-Sn alloy. They found that in most instances changes in the dihedral angle were caused by compositional changes in the liquid phase; as the composition of the liquid approached that of the solid the dihedral angle decreased. They noted that the addition of a third element which was soluble in both the liquid and solid phases at a given temperature may decrease the dihedral angle (e.g., the addition of copper or zinc) but otherwise the ternary alloys formed exhibited dihedral angles between those of the A1-Sn binary alloy and those of the binary alloy of aluminum with the added element. Dwarakadasa and Krishnan4 investigated the changes in dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy with temperature when small additions of magnesium, iron, silicon, manganese, sulfur, cobalt, and silver were made to a copper alloy containing 3 pct Bi. They found that in all cases the added elements gave an increase in the dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy when compared with the values obtained for the simple binary alloy at the same temperature. It was noted that an increase in temperature gave a decrease in dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy in each of the ternary alloys studied. Similar results have been obtained by Ramachandran and Krishnan5 for the addition of small quantities of lead. This paper describes the application of dihedral angle measurement to the determination of the shapes of liquid phases at various temperatures above the solidus when small additions of copper, indium, magnesium, lithium, antimony, and silicon are made to an aluminum alloy containing nominally 3 pct Sn. An attempt is made to correlate the measurements with the relative solubility of the added elements in tin and aluminum. The work was undertaken to provide more data concerning the effects of temperature and composition on the shape of liquid films above the solidus. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work ternary aluminum alloys containing nominally 3 pct Sn and small additions of high-purity copper, indium, lithium, magnesium, antimony, and silicon were made. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under an inert atmosphere of argon and cast into ingots 6 in. long by 0.5 in. diam. The ingots were then cut into rods 1.5 in. long, given a 50 pct cold reduction, and machined into test pieces 0.5 in. long by 0.5 in, diam for heat treatment. The adsorption density of ethyl xanthate on pyrite was determined as a function of xanthate concentration. Surface preparation of the mineral appears to have asafunctionsome effect on the subsequent adsorption process, A monolayer of xanthate on the surface is exceeded only in presence of oxygen. The effect of OH- , HS- (and x and CN- S=)and on the amount of xanthate adsorbed was investigated. Competition between OH- and X- (xanthate) ions for specific adsorption sites is indicated over a wide pH range. IN the flotation of sulfide ores, xanthates are most commonly used to prepare the surface of the mineral to be floated so that attachment to air takes place. The quantity of agent required to make the mineral hydrophobic is usually very small, of the order of 0.1 to 0.25 lb per ton of mineral. Details of the mechanism of pyrite collection are for the most part unsettled. Adsorption of collector has long been believed to involve an ion exchange mechanism as demonstrated for galena' and for chalcocite.2 In the work on chal-cocite it was also demonstrated that a film of xanthate radicals unleachable in solvents that dissolve alkali xanthates, copper xanthate, or dixanthogen was formed at the surface of the mineral. The unleachable product increased with increasing addition of xanthate up to a maximum corresponding to an oriented monolayer of xanthate radicals. Pyrite is extremely floatable with xanthate if its surface is fresh.9 ut the floatability decreases rapidly as oxide coatings increase in abundance. Pyrite shows zero contact angle when in contact with ethyl xanthate solution at pH higher than about 10.5;4 at neutrality, a contact angle of 60" is obtained at a reagent concentration of 25 mg per liter. Alkali sulfides and cyanides are pyrite depressants. In this study of pyrite collection the writers have sought to relate measured xanthate adsorption to the method used in preparing pyrite, to the presence or absence of oxygen, to concentration of hydroxyl, hydrosulfide, sulfide, and cyanide ions. The principal experimental tool has been radioanalysis," " using xanthatcx marked with sulfur 35. Experimental Materials Pyrite: Unlike most sulfides, pyrite is a poly-sulfide. The structure given by Bragg7 resembles that of sodium chloride, the iron atoms corresponding to the position of sodium and pairs of sulfur atoms corresponding to the position of chlorine. The edge of the unit cell in pyrite is 5.40 A and in halite 5.63 A. The S-S distance in pyrite is 2.10 A; the Fe-S distance, 3.50 A: and the Fe-Fe distance, 3.82 A. Natural pyrite from Park City, Utah, was used in this investigation. Pyrite 1 was obtained by hand picking pure crystals. Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3 were obtained from finer textured crystalline material containing inclusions of silicates. The same cleaning technique was utilized for the preparation of Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3, whereas a different cleaning technique was used for Pyrite 1. Pyrite 1 was prepared as follows: The crystals were ground in a porcelain ball mill and the 200/400 mesh fraction was separated by wet screening with distilled water, followed by washing for 1 hr with deoxygenated distilled water acidified with sulfuric acid to pH 1.5. The acid was removed by rinsing with deoxygenated distilled water on a filter until a pH of 6.0 was reached in the effluent. This filtration was carried out under nitrogen. The sample was then dried in a desiccator under nitrogen. The period of time for which this pyrite sample was in contact with water containing oxygen was about 4 hr. The specific surface as determined by the BET gas adsorption method was 582 cm2 per g. Final material assayed 53.12 pct sulfur and 46.5 pct iron (theoretical, for FeS,: S, 53.45 pct; Fe, 46.55 pct). After crushing, Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3 were washed with 1 M HCl. rinsed, and fed to a laboratory shakinq table to remove the small amount of silicates. The concentrate obtained was ground in a laboratory steel ball mill. The 200/400 mesh fraction was separated by classification in a Richards hindered settling tube. This fraction was then given a final wash with 0.1 M HCl and deoxygenated water was filtered through the sample. The final effluent showed a conductivity equivalent to that of a solution having a salt concentration of 0.3 ppm. Aqueous hydrogen sulfide solution was then added to the sampln (about 100 ml saturated H,S solution to about 1000 g pyrite under a few hundred milliliters of water) which was stored wet under nitrogen. The thermodynamic activities of zinc in six solid solution Cu-Zn alloys ranging from 5 to 35 at. pct Zn were determined experimentally in the temperature range 400° to 600°C. This low temperature investigation was canducted in order to evaluate techniques developed to utilize the inherently high sensitivity of atomic absorption flocesses in the measurement of thermodynamic activities. Analytical expressions ,for the activity and actizlity coeflcient are given for the six alloys in the temperature ranges investigated. RELATIVELY few experimental methods are available for investigation of thermodynamic activities of alloys, especially in the solid state. The techniques most frequently used have been the electrochemical potential and the effusion methods, both of which have severe limitations in many instances. It is therefore desirable to expand the ability to perform such measurements in order to obtain new information as well as to provide an additional independent verification capability. In this work, we present a significant improvement in the spectrophotometric method for sensing small vapor pressures in static absorption cells. Similar techniques have been used previously;1"5 however, applications had been limited to relatively high pressures, often greater than 1 torr. Prior investigators have, for the most part, used broad spectral sources such as xenon or mercury lamps, and high intensity arcs. Hollow cathode sources were first suggested in 1956 6 and were used soon afterwards.4'5 These sources offer significant improvements in sensitivity and freedom from interfering spectral lines.'-' EXPERIMENTAL High purity zinc was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and copper from American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were of 99.999 pct purity. Copper-zinc alloys were vacuum melted in a high fired carbon crucible with each alloy pulled from the melt as a 4 -in. diam bar. The bars were swaged to -1/4 in. rods and vacuum annealed for 160 hr at 800° + 1°C. Samples for gross chemical analysis were taken at intervals along the length of the rods to ascertain the axial zinc gradient. Electron microprobe analysis of homogenized specimens indicated that the alloys had uniform compositions over their cross sections on a macro (200 p) and micro (1 u) scale to better than *1 pct (20) of the gross composition. This tolerance was determined by counting statistics, rather than assured composition fluctuations. All SiO 2 windows were high-ultraviolet-transmission grade to minimize intensity losses. Silica absorption cells were scrupulously cleaned consecutively in organic solvents, dilute HF, and distilled water before use. The empty cells were then flamed while under a dynamic vacuum, cooled, and removed to an argon-filled glove bag. Alloy pieces were cut and filed in the glove bag to produce fresh surfaces, and then loaded into the cells. The loaded cells were temporarily sealed, removed from the glove bag, reevacuated to 10-5 torr or better, and permanently sealed. The instrument used is schematically shown in Fig. 1. The spectral emission from a commercially made hollow cathode lamp (A) of a selected element is focused through an absorption cell (B) inside a well-controlled furnace (C). The intensity of the transmitted beam is measured using the spectrometer* (D) 'Techtron model AA4 atomic absorption spectrometer. which contains a grating (E) that disperses the light prior to impingement on the photomultiplier (F). The monochromator grating is adjusted so that only the wavelength of interest is measured. The power supply delivered an interrupted voltage to the lamp, causing a chopped radiation output to be transmitted. The detector read only the intermittent component of radiation incident upon it, so that all continuous noise signals (furnace radiation, and so forth) were eliminated. Three recording thermocouples contained in the muffle furnace were positioned along the length of the absorption cell: one at each end and one at the center. An effort was made to keep the ends of the cell several degrees hotter than the center to avoid window condensate. Appropriate thermal corrections were then necessary to relate cell pressure to radiation attenuation. Water-cooled heat shields, as shown in Fig. 1, were found to aid signal stability by protecting the hollow cathode and the photomultiplier from furnace radiation. The furnace had a 2-in. diam muffle, Kan-thal wound, with SiO 2 windows at its ends to minimize convective effects. The hollow cathode radiation was masked and focused to form a conic beam that was a maximum of { in. diam within the furnace. Thus, the 1.5 in. diam absorption cell easily contained the entire beam. The furnace was mounted on ball-bearing slides with positive positioning detents. This arrangement allowed the removal of the entire furnace assembly from the radiation path, position [I], Fig. 1, so that frequent sampling of the unattenuated beam intensity could be obtained. In all cases the beam intensity was kept constant to 0.1 pct as judged by readings taken immediately before and immediately after data collection. Only data for absorptions of less than 80 pct were utilized, as systematic deviations from linearity were found for greater absorptions.

Normally the U. S. produces less than 10 pct of its annual manganese requirement. About 95 pct of domestic consumption is used by the steel industry.' The strategic and critical nature of manganese has been recognized by its inclusion in the national stockpile and by intensified research directed toward cataloging and evaluating domestic manganiferous deposits. The USBM has participated in these activities for many years with field and laboratory studies to assess the extent and potential utilization of domestic manganese ores. One area of particular interest is in the vinicity of Batesville, Ark., where deposits have been mined since 1849 for both manganese and ferruginous manganese ores. Production is centered in Independence County, but deposits are also found in Sharp, Izard, and Stone counties in north-central Arkansas. Miser has described the geology and manganese mineralization in some detail.'. * "he rocks of the area are sedimentary, consisting of sandstone, limestone, shale, and chert. The two formations of greatest importance,' Fernvale limestone and Cason shale, are host rocks of the primary manganese mineralization. Through 1955 the district produced some 230,000 long tons of manganese ore (35 pct Mn or more) and 236,000 tons of ferruginous manganese (10 to 35 pct Mn).5 Most of the ore has been mined from deposits of manganese oxides in residual clays resulting from weathering of the two formations noted above. Concentration methods have been primitive, consisting for the most part of washing. hand picking, and jigging. A significant accomplishment in the district in recent years was the USBM recognition and investigation of the huge manganese potential represented by unaltered Fernvale limestone. systematic reconnaissance of manganiferous limestone and other occurrences has been in progress since 1953 to delineate the extent and tonnage of manganiferous materials. Results of that survey have appeared in two recent publications,1-5 which ascribe to the district an inferred reserve of 166 million long dry tons at a grade of 5 to 6 pct Mn. Most of this was mancaniferous limestone with an estimated content of 5 pct Mn. Specifications: Beneficiation was carried out on a group of manganiferous limestones to develop a way to recover commercial-grade concentrate from this extensive resource. The following chemical specifications were established by the GSA for metallurgical manganese ore acceptable for delivery to the national stockpile: Size specifications were not considered, as it was assumed that the concentrates could be pelletized or sintered. Manganiferous Limestones: Of the 11 samples tested to date, six were taken by cutting vertical channels across beds of limestone outcrops. Diamond drilling through overlying barren chert into unex-posed limestone provided four samples, and the last was a churn drill sample. In general, the samples were dlrk, fossiliferous limestone containing small amounts of braunite, hausmannite, rhodochrosite, massive and micaceous iron and manganese silicates, quartz, barite, and glauconite. The braunite and other manganese oxides partly to completely replaced some of the calcite and fossil material. The calcite was generously stained with mangenese and iron oxides. Phosphorus was present in all samples as collophanite grains, calcium phosphate fossil replacements. or an unidentified manganese-bearing carbonate. The difficulty in separating this complex array of minerals was further complicated by a very intimate association. Although some manganese grains as large as Ik in. were noted, grinding to subsieve sizes would have been necessary to liberate the components. Figs. 1 and 2 are micrographs, at X100, of typical polished sections in which white areas are manganese. gray is gangue, and black areas are surface depressions. By comparison with the 100 mesh opening, it is seen that some of the grains are coarse enough to respond, perhaps to tabling or flotation, but many are obviously beyond the scope of ohysical processing. Partial chemical analyses of the eight samples that were ultimately amenable to concentration are presented in Table 1. BENEFlClATlON RESEARCH Tabling: To take advantage of the presence of sand-size grains, both jigging and tabling were considered at the outset. Jigging was largely ineffective, but tabling achieved a partial recovery from most samples. As an example, the surface material from Baxter Hill was crushed to —28 mesh, hydraulically classified, and the coarsest spigot fraction was tabled to yield a concentrate, middling. and tailing. The latter two were reground to pass 48 mesh, combined with the primary fines, re-classified, and retabled. The middling and tailing were again ground, this time to pass 150 mesh, and deslimed at 20µ in a 3-in. hydraulic cyclone. The cyclone underflow was returned to the table to reclaim a small amount of high-grade manganese. An interesting facet of the gravity concentration developed on certain samples in which braunite was the principal manganese constituent. Since braunite has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, while the host rock, limestone. is only 3, a differential size reduction took place during crushing, and the

UNDER war conditions coal immediately assumes a position of highest importance for coal must carry the basic load for industry. The upward trend in production continued through 1941. Bituminous coal production alone about equaled the total output of bituminous and anthracite in 1940. The figures for 1941 approximated 500,000,000 tons for bituminous, and 54,000,000 tons for anthracite, and production of by-product and beehive coke exceeded that of the previous year. The coal industry, under the National Bituminous Coal Act, is going through a period of readjustment, and is beginning to stabilize itself under the statute. The Federal Mine Inspection Nill became law during the year.

THE luncheon of the Milling Methods Committee in the Engineers' Club, on Feb. 16, was distinctly a social affair, although several matters of a non-milling nature were fruitfully discussed. The session* on Milling Methods, the same afternoon, attracted a gathering which overtaxed the capacity of the Board Room on the fifteenth floor. Galen H. Clevenger presided, with the moral reinforcement of Charles Butters. As all papers were available in printed form, and since synopses have appeared in MINING & METALLURGY, it is unnecessary to cover the contents of each in detail here. The first paper (T. P. 410), by Leaver and Woolf, on the "Flotation of Minor Gold in Large-scale Copper "Concentrators," was excellently summarized by R. S. Dean of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, who stressed the -very definite action of lime as a depressant of gold, and showed how the authors had worked out the best conditions of alkalinity, pH concentration and reagents for -optimum recovery of gold along with base metals, especially where lime had to be used to depress pyrite. No discussion was evoked.

AT the December Board meeting, the report of the William Lawrence Saunders Medal Committee, recommending the award of the medal to John Hays Hammond, was received and unanimously approved. The citation is: "For his notable work as an engineer and developer of mines at home and abroad, his industrial leadership and his public services." The medal will be presented as usual during the meeting in February, presumably at the annual dinner at the Waldorf, on Feb. 20. The other medals to be given on the same occasion are the James Douglas, which goes to Paul D. Merica, and the Robert W. Hunt, which is awarded this year to Edgar C. Bain, as already announced. This will be the third award made of the Saunders Medal for "Achievement in Mining," previous recipients having been David W. Brunton in 1927, and Herbert Hoover in 1928. The list is a distinguished one and Mr. Hammond's name is appropriately included. His career is so widely known that it is not necessary to repeat the account, published in MINING AND METALLURGY last April.

Annual production of more than 4,000,000 tons of 0.74 percent copper ore and coincident handling of over 5,000,000 tons of waste at the open-pit mine of Castle Dome Copper Co. near Miami, Ariz. takes a lot of power. Manufacturers have ever co-operated with mining companies in providing the required equipment to suit the problem. Power equipment suppliers have done much to make possible the economic and profitable production of copper from low-grade ores. In the future, as mining operations will necessarily handle even lower-grade ores, the ability of the manufacturer to supply the power and mechanical equipment to produce more metal at a fair and reasonable price will be the good right arm of the miner. About 27,000 tons of concentrate is produced from the 4,000,000 tons of ore.

FOUK fields of activity are now recognized by the A.I.M.E. in its award of medals for conspicuous achievement: the Saunders medal for mining, the Douglas medal for non- ferrous metallurgy the Lucai medal for petroleum, and the Rand medal for distinguished achievement in the broad field of mining administration including the organization and development of enterprises in all branches of the mineral industry. This last is known officially as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal, and it award is made possible through funds supplied by the Charles F. Rand Foundation. Until this year money thus available was used for other special projects, so that the forthcoming presentation of the Rand medal to Robert C. Stanley is notable as being the first time that achievement in mining administration has been thus recognized.

ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility. BECAUSE of the impetus given to placer mining since the price of gold was advanced to $35, several types of small dredges have made their appearance, especially in the Lincoln and Oroville areas of California. Some of these are known as "doodle bugs," and have been given considerable publicity, though many believe their performance has been overrated and that complete costs of construction and operation, if known would not put them in so favorable a light. Fig. 1 is a doodle bug owned by E. M. Clark and operated near Lincoln, Calif. It is understood that it was abandoned because of inability to handle deep ground. A similar machine that has been operated-profitably by Comstock Placers is shown in Fig. 2.
