The Haile mine is situated in Lancaster county, South Carolina, twenty miles south of Lancaster. The topography of the country is characterized by low hills rising generally less than two hundred feet above the many small creeks which traverse the surface. The road from Kershaw, the nearest railroad station, 3 1/2 miles from the mines, leads through woods with sandy soil and cottonfields. In many places it lies on the bare rock and shows that the adjacent covering of soil and earth is usually not more than one foot thick, and often less. This covering is to a great extent sand. Close by a bridge, about one mile from the mine, large round boulders of diabase may be observed. The country-rock seems to be exclusively talcose slate, with a general strike varying from N. 45' E. to N. 70' E. NEVER having actually tried to engage in the systematic education of anyone, and having little direct knowledge of the practical problems and limitations in the field of education, I can pose only as a "nonexpert" in this field, one whose ideas are to be regarded as personal opinions. The necessity for compromise between educational ideals and the practical limitations of time, money, and mental capacities of both student and teacher is evident in the preparation of an end product that we may regard with a reasonable degree of conviction as a professional engineer. We need to do so many things. The engineering student must have a clear understanding of the basic sciences; he should develop manual skills and co-ordination; he should speak and write the language with simple clarity and directness; he should gather knowledge of a special field; and, he should be educated for living in a broad ..

I have the pleasure of exhibiting samples of the rock in which the South African diamonds are said to occur, for which I am indebted to Mr. Franz Groeger, of Vienna, formerly an assistant of the Royal Imperial Geological Institution, whose account of the general geology of Southern Africa was contained in a recent number of the proceedings of that Institution. The rock is apparently a sort. of tufa, evidently of volcanic origin. Mr. Groeger assured me that it could be seen in situ, bounded by uplifted stratified rocks; and that diamonds had been mined from it, by means of shafts, some distance below the surface. Groeger calls it " greenstone-tufa," and says of it, in the proceedings of the Geological Institution, " it breaks through the younger members of Group III [lower Trias and Jura], .... and crops out in oval masses, filling fissures.....The occurrence of this tufa is not locally limited, but has been traced and proved already over a large territory." Dr. Hunt remarked that the material looked like the trass of the Rhine region. He thought it a new occurrence for diamonds. He believed diamonds to belong to ancient crystalline rocks, although these materials might be brought up by volcanic agency, and the diamonds remain unaltered. The Long Island Lighting Co. has operated an extensive monitoring system for over three years. Nearly 900,000 separate pieces of information have been recorded for a land area of some 600 sq miles, 15 miles north to south by 40 miles east to west. The data are composed of about a half million sulfur dioxide measurements at various locations, 290,000 of which were by the West-Gaeke method, about 160,000 pieces of weather data, and 220,000 measurements of sulfur dioxide as emitted from each of the power plant stacks on the system, all measured on an hourly basis and stored on computor cards and tapes. The computor has been programmed to collate stack emissions, weather information, and ground level sulfur dioxide measurements. The analysis shows that emissions from tall stacks do, indeed, contribute very little to ground level sulfur dioxide. For example, LILCO shows that its Northport plant contributes less than 2 ppb, hourly annual average. They also state that the plant converted to 100% natural gas or shut down, would reduce ground level sulfur dioxide by no more than 2 ppb.

Hole deviation has great consequences on mining economy, especially for long hole drilling technique. First of all the bore hole datas are concerned but also such factors as development, loss of ore and waste rock dilution are influenced. Hole deviation for sublevel open stoping is illustrated with examples from some mines. The deviations are indicated as mean values but also as standard deviation values, owing to their statistical distribution. The economic influence of the hole deviation is especially studied for steep, small lowgrade orebodies, mined with big hole blasting. Hole deviation can thus influence costs up to US$ 3-4 per ton for operating, development, losses of ore and rock waste dilution. This cost is of the same magnitude as the total operating costs for many sublevel stoping mines. The economic savings in accurate drilling are therefore substantial and are worth all attention.

Every engineer has occasion to trace or copy a map, plan, or other drawing on paper too thick for the ordinary way of using tracing-cloth or tracing-paper. When the figure is small and simple a copy may be made by holding the original against a window-pane, coverin& it with the paper, and tracing direct by the aid of the strong sunlight from outside. The need of utilizing this principle on a larger scale and in a more convenient position led Dr. J. C. Branner to plan the table of which the following is a description : This table was first made in the form of an adjustable glass-top table with a mirror beneath, in 1887, while Dr. Branner was State Geologist of Arkansas. Later it was modified as experience suggested until the form as here described was evolved. The device consists essentially of a drafting-table with a plate-glass top, upon which the original drawing and the paper are laid, and a mirror mounted underneath to reflect the light of the sky up through the drawing. The glass top is hinged and fitted with two arms and thumb-screws, so that it can be raised and fixed to any position, either inclined or horizontal. The mirror is pivoted and revolves about a horizontal axis, so that it may be tilted to any angle. The hood of cardboard or black cloth prevents the reflection of light from the tracing, and may or may not be attached to the table.

The system Pu-Ce-(Pu,Ce)Co2 has been investigated by thermal, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. The principal characteristics of this system were found to be: 1) a "eutectic" valley extending across the phase diagram from the 6 Pu/Pu3 Co eutectic at 408°C to the 7 Ce/Ce24Co11 eutectic at 42Z°C, the maximum temperature in the valley being 443°C; 2) three ternary inter mediate phases, each having an appreciable mutual solid solubility for plutonium and cerium; 3) eleven four-phase equilibria comprising one eutectic, four peritectics, and six Class II reactions; 4) a pseudobinary section between the ternary phase A and the y Ce solid solution, and another such section between the 6 Pu solid solution and the 77 phase (Pu3 CO) containing cerium in solid solution. ALLOYS of plutonium that are completely molten at temperatures in the vicinity of 500°C are of interest for use in the liquid state as fast reactor fuels. Since exploratory work1,2 on Pu-Ce-Co alloys had indicated that a "eutectic" valley extended across the ternary system between the Pu-co[6 Pu/n (Pu3co)] and the Ce-CO[? Ce/? (ce24co11)] binary eutectics, thus allowing alloys of any plutonium concentration to be selected within the temperature limitation, the present investigation was begun for the purpose of accurately defining the "eutectic" valley. However, when the existence of three ternary intermediate phases and the consequent complexity of the liquid-solid equilibria were discovered, the investigation was expanded to cover the complete system, except for the corner between the isomorphous series PuCo2-CeCo2 and pure cobalt. 1) EXPERIMENTAL The purities of the alloy components are given in Table I. Alloy buttons, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared by arc melting the accurately weighed components (±0.1 mg) under a purified He-Ar atmosphere. Weight loss as a result of melting was usually less than 1 part in 1000; therefore, the buttons were not chemically analyzed. One half of each button was re-melted by induction heating in vacuo in a magnesia crucible and furnace-cooled, so as to produce a somewhat coarser microstructure than that of the rapidly cooled arc-melted button. About 20 g of each alloy to be examined by thermal analysis were remelted in vacuo in a tantalum crucible of the inverted thermocouple well type. The thermal, X-ray diffraction, heat treating, and micrographic methods used in this investigation were essentially the same as have been described in earlier reports.3,4 Two etchants for these alloys were found to be satisfactory: A) 8 (parts by volume) orthophosphoric acid, 5 ethanol, and 5 glycol; B) 7 tetraphosphoric acid, 36 water, and 57 2-ethoxyethanol. Etchant A was used at 5 to 6 v for 15 to 20 sec, and etchant B was used at 10 v for 10 sec. 2) THE LIMITING BINARY SYSTEMS 2.1) Plutonium-Cerium. The phase relationships of this system have been investigated by Ellinger, Land, and Cramer,5 and by Selle and Etter.6 The over-all agreement of their phase diagrams is good, but there are some discrepancies in the positions of some phase

Quenched structures were studied in alloys containing up to 12.5 pct cobalt. The subsequent decomposition of a 10 pct cobalt retained-ß phase alloy was investigated using metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods. Hardness measurements also were made during the decomposition process. Precipitation of Ti2Co is by nucleation and growth; and an activation energy of 50,000 cal per mole was determined. The values of the coefficient ß suggest that the precipitate is pearlitic at temperatures between 450 and 475°C, and spheroidal between 500 and 525°C. THIS paper describes part of a series of invesligations into phase transformations in binary alloys of titanium with transition elements. The general approach is similar to that taken in work on titanium-iron and titanium-nickel alloys.' Previous investigators'' have established the titanium-rich end of the titanium-cobalt phase diagram, reproduced in Fig. 1. Orrell and Fontana' showed that alloys containing more than about 6 pct" cobalt quenched from the ß range, produced 100 pcl retained-p phase. The isothermal decomposition of alloys containing between 0.8 pct Co and 15.5 pct CO was investigated by the same workers in the temperature range 650 to 1000°C. They reported that these alloys transformed into a or Ti,Co depending on the cobalt content, but no quantitative data were given. In the work to be described a series of alloys containing 0.8 pct Co to 12.5 pct Co was examined in the quenched condition. The 10 pct Co alloy (the lowest cobalt content to retain 100 pct ß on quenching) was selected for further work on the tempering kinetics of the ß decomposition. Experimental Procedure Since our own melting equipment was not installed at the outset of this work, the Physical Metallurgy Division of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys (Ottawa, Canada) prepared the alloys. These were made of Japanese sponge, (which when melted had a value of 103 DPH, using a 1-kg load), and electrolytically prepared cobalt. The al- loys, made up to contain 0.8, 1.6, 3.3, 5.8, 8.3, 10.0 and 12.5 pct Co, were homogenized by swaging into rods at 900°C. Filings were taken from the rods, and any iron chips from the file were separated magnetically. Size fractions of both plus and minus 200 mesh (about 75p) were shown by their constitution, after annealing just below the eutectoid temperature, to contain the same cobalt content. Consequently, it was permissible to use the —200-mesh fraction, knowing it to be representative of the rod composition. Quenching in argon was carried out in a newly designed furnace, whose features include (1) an Inconel furnace tube, (2) a positive pressure of argon maintained at all times in the furnace—even when a sample is removed or inserted. The furnace is shown in Fig. 2 and is described in the Appendix. The tempering processes were carried out on powder samples sealed in evacuated quartz capsules. Since the highest tempering temperature was 525OC, no protection against reaction with the quartz was necessary. (Tests were made on filings of iodide titanium and showed no hardness increase after equivalent heat-treatments.) A thermocouple was attached to the capsule, which was heated to the

The Los Bronces copper deposit is located on the west side of the Andes Mountains in central Chile about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Santiago. The deposit consists of a hydrothermal breccia complex that was emplaced in the western part of an earlier porphyry copper mineral system. This system exhibits propylitic, sericitic, silicic to potassic hydrothermal alteration with disseminated and stockwork copper-molybdenum sulfide mineralization over an area of about 12 km2 (5 sq. miles). The Rio Blanco Mine, about 800 m (0.5 miles) east of Los Bronces, is an underground block caving mine located in the central part of this system. The mineralization at Rio Blanco is characterized by one of the highest primary copper grades known for porphyry copper systems. Present mining at Los Bronces is from an open pit located in the northern part of a hydrothermal complex that is composed of at least seven different copper-bearing tourmaline breccia pipes. Together these pipe form one large contiguous body about 2 km (1.2 miles) long and 0.7 km (0.4 miles) wide at the surface. This body crops out at elevations of between 3.5 and 4.1 km (2 and 2.5 miles) above sea level. Each breccia pipe has a characteristic shape, matrix, type and degree of mineralization and alteration. Quartz, tourmaline, specularite, anhydrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sericite, chlorite, and rock flour are present in significant quantities in most breccia matrices. The clasts consist mainly of quartz monzonite, andesite, and minor amounts of quartz latite porphyry. The seven different breccia pipes are identified, from oldest to youngest, as Ghost, Central, Western, Infiernillo, Fine Gray, Anhydrite, and Donoso. The breccias coalesce, interfinger, or display gradational contacts. In places they form sharp contacts with each other and with the surrounding intrusive or volcanic host rocks. Early breccias are disrupted or cut by subsequent breccia events. Explosive emplacement was followed by collapse after the release of hydrothermal pressures. The Los Bronces breccia complex has sharp contacts with the surrounding intrusive stock and andesites. These contacts dip inward on the north, west, and south margins. The eastern contact is nearly vertical and/or dips slightly outward and suggests a westward tilting of the body of about 15° after emplacement. The breccia complex is not fully explored at depth, but is known to extend at least below the 3 km (2 mile) elevation in its central eastern part, about 1 km (0.6 miles) below the highest breccia outcrop. Primary copper sulfide minerals are most abundant in the Donoso and Infiernillo breccias where the matrix consists mostly of tourmaline, quartz, sulfides, specularite, and/or chlorite with minor amounts of rock flour, sericite, and clay. The volume of the matrix material is mostly smaller than in the other breccias. Secondary enrichment enhanced the primary copper grade in the southern two-thirds of the Los Bronces breccia complex and in much of the surrounding porphyry system. Primary grades of 0.3% to 0.5% copper have been enriched to approximately 0.9%. This enrichment may extend from surface outcrops to a depth of more than 500 m (1, 640 ft) in more permeable parts of the breccia complex. A leached and oxidized capping of variable thickness covers a large part of the enriched layer and exceeds 300 m (984 ft) at one location. The shape and depth of the enrichment blanket and the capping suggest that the enrichment process is still active.

Present Raw Materials The lithium industry has had exceptional growth since publication of the last edition of this volume, and the present scale of mining and consumption of raw materials is a great many times that of 1949. The materials of present economic importance consist of four pegmatite minerals and lithium-bearing brine. Spodumene, a lithium pyroxene, occurs in greatest abundance, and is the chief source. It has the formula LiAlSi2O6 and theoretically may contain 8.03 pct Li2O, but in the more important deposits the content is 6.5 to 7.5 pct. The hardness is 6.5, the specific gravity 3.1 to 3.2, and the color mostly pale green to white although deep green, lilac, and yellow varieties exist. The crystals are prisms with strongly developed longitudinal cleavages, and crushing characteristically produces lath-shaped particles. Giant crystals up to 47 ft long are known, but in most occurrences the predominant size range is 0.5 to 12 in. long and 0.1 to 2 in. wide. Hypogene* alteration has formed lithia-bearing sericite and coarser muscovite and rarely eucryptite, while supergene* alteration yields kaolinite and hydrous mica. Lepidolite, of second importance, is a mica of varying composition approximating K2Li3-A14Si7O21(OH,F)3. It has lamellate cleavage, book structure, and a specific gravity of 2.8 to 3. The books range in size from microscopic to a diameter of several inches. The color is mostly violet, but other colors include pink, gray, yellow, and white. Most commercial lepidolite contains 3 to 4 pct Li20 and chemically is in the higher grade range of a series of lithium micas that includes polylithionite, zinnwaldite, and protolithionite. In this series, the content of Li2O is exceptionally as high as 7 pct. Petalite and amblygonite are also of economic importance, but are used in smaller amounts. Petalite has the formula LiA1Si4O10 and is white, gray, or pink. The hardness is 6, the specific gravity 2.4, the cleavage in two planes 114° apart, and the Li2O content commonly 3 to 4.7 pct with a maximum of 4.88. Amblygonite has the formula LiA1FPO4 in which OH may substitute for F to form montebrasite. It is white and has polysynthetic twinning in two directions at 90°. Amblygonite superficially resembles potash feldspar, but has a bluish or grayish tint unlike the cream or salmon tint of the feldspar.[t] The hardness is 6 and the specific gravity 3 to 3.1, and the content of Li2O is the highest among lithium minerals that occur in significant quantity, ranging mostly from 7.5 to 9 pct with a maximum of 10.2. The brine of Searles Lake in California30 has been a commercial source of lithium since 1938. See Chap. 7, p. 108. The "lake" is a saline evaporite deposit, and the exposed part has an area of 12 sq mi. To an average depth of 71 ft, this part of the deposit consists of crystalline salts with 50 pct interstitial voids. The voids are filled with brine that contains mainly sodium and potassium compounds, but the brine also contains 0.015 pct Li2O, which is recovered as dilithium sodium phosphate containing 21 pct Li20. THE first commercial production of bituminous coal in the United States was in 1820, and formation of acid in the areas from which the coal was removed began at that time. Thus it is 130 years since the development of mine acid began. The coal operator has had to deal with the acid water produced in his mines, and his losses from corrosion of pumps and equipment have been tremendous. Other industries and the public have been forced to spend large amounts for their water requirements because of the acid discharge from the mines. There are many contradictions in the literature on this subject probably because of variations in the analytical procedures followed and differences in the methods of calculation and reporting. The opinions previously expressed may be summarized as follows: The production of mine acid has been looked upon as a simple chemical reaction wherein the oxygen of the air has reacted with pyrite to produce ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid. This reaction appears in many chemistry texts and generally has not been considered worthy of further study. Since the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration or activity was developed and expressed in terms of pH, indicator and instrumental methods for pH determination have become readily available, making it natural to think of it as a measure of acid content. Special purpose analytical methods applicable to potable waters, sewage effluents, and boiler waters, based in general upon the determination of what may be regarded as impurities, have been applied to more concentrated solutions constituting mine discharges, without reference to the fact that these specialized procedures had been developed to serve as operating guides for water-treatment plants. Increased flow was thought to result in a dilution of the acid produced. When the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a fellowship at Mellon Institute, the first approach to the problem was to review some of the chemical reactions involved and their relation to acid production. Since the sulphates of iron were among the principal constituents of coal-mine drainage, the first studies were based upon solutions of chemically pure ferrous and ferric sulphate. These are both neutral salts, that is, the iron and the sulphate are equivalent, but they produce acid reactions in water solution because as salts of strong acids with weak bases, they hydrolyze to form acid solutions. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS The qualitative correlation between low-temperature ductility and prior high-temperature creep strain in nickel obtained in this investigation confirms the result obtained on high-purity brass by Chen and Machlin. However, the quantitative effect is much smaller in nickel. Comparison can be made on the basis of a prior high-temperature strain that is a certain percentage of the total high-temperature elongation to rupture. In the research of Chen and machlin, the prior high-temperature strain of 1/2 pct equaled 8.5 pct of the total high-temperature elongation at rupture. For nickel, in our experiments, 8.5 pct of 21.2 pct equals 1.8 pct. For eh = 1.8 pct, the loss in ductility in percent equals x 100 = b.5 pct. Schmatz IRON-aluminum alloys have gained much interest in the past few years for use as a base material for elevated-temperature alloys because of their excel- high-temperature strain the loss in low-temperature ductility is 8.5 pct for nickel as compared to 60 pct for pure a, brass. It is also interesting to note the observation that in nickel the low-temperature fractures, even at the most extreme high-temperature pre-strain, were partly trans crystalline and partly intercrystalline. In the case of a brass, these fractures were completely intercrystalline. According to the data on the percent of the grain boundary area that is cracked, at 22 pct high-temperature elongation, about 12.5 pct of the grain boundary area does not carry load. Thus, the inter-crack areas are carrying a stress that is about 11 pct higher than the nominal stress. A simple model predicts that the overall elongation, which is primarily the elongation in the bulk of the specimen, will correspond to the nominal stress when the stress in the intercrack area equals the tensile strength. Quantitatively this model predicts the equation The form of this equation will agree with that found if the strain-hardening exponent, n, equals unity. Actually this model is too gross an approximation to yield good quantitative results. The question naturally arises as to whether in ordinary hot-working, such as hot-rolling, intercrys-talline cracks are introduced that affect the low-temperature properties. It appears that the answer is that such a possibility cannot be overlooked, if the hot-working induces tensile stresses at temperatures above the equicohesive temperature and if the material tends to be notch sensitive at low temperature. C. M. Decroly (University of Brussels, Belgium) — The importance of the fluorides in the process metallurgy of special metals has already been accepted and it will probably increase in the future. Free energy diagrams as such established by Professor Kellogg are therefore very useful. It is interesting to note that the absolute value of the standard free energy of formation of HF increases with temperature, whereas for almost all the other fluorides it decreases; consequently it should be theoretically possible to reduce all the fluorides of the metals which, at low temperature, have a greater affinity for fluorine than hydrogen by this last element, provided a sufficiently high temperature is used in order to have a good efficiency. However, with regard to the reduction of UFe by hydrogen, I doubt that it will be possible to obtain directly the metal at comparatively low temperatures. There are other uranium fluorides which are more stable than UF6 and it is very likely that such fluorides will be obtained first. For example, in considering the reaction: UF6gas + H2gas + UF1so1id + 2 HFgas it is found, using the thermodynamic data of Brewer et al, that ?H298 = —66 kcal and ?G°298, = —65.2 kcal. As a result, the reduction of UF6 to UF4solld should proceed spontaneously even at ordinary temperature. On the other hand, the standard free energy of formation of UF4solid at 298°K is AG°298 = -209 kcal per mol of F2. The reduction of UF4 by hydrogen will be practically difficult and, as it is known, the only practical way of reducing this compound is to use alkaline-earth metals such as calcium or magnesium. I should like to point out, further, that the fluorination of many metal oxides can be carried out very easily by using the ammonium difluoride method of preparation, which renders the use of fluoride gas unnecessary. The first compound formed is generally a double fluoride of the metal and ammonium. This compound can be decomposed by heating either in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere, ammonium fluoride being volatilized leaving the metal fluoride in a very pure state. H. H. Kellogg (author's reply)—Professor Decroly is quite right in pointing out that the formation of lower halides of uranium may complicate the reduction of UF6 by H2. I was unable to find his reference to the free energy of formation of UF4 in the compilation of Brewer.13 however. The value of AG°298, = —209 kcal for formation of ½ UFa seems rather high, and I hope the source of this value may be made clear.

The pressure distribution in a reservoir producing an incompressible fluid by radial flow in a horizontal structure is a simple logarithmic function' used daily by reservoir engineers. The assumption of an incompressible liquid is equivalent to assuming that pressure is maintained constant at the well radius and at some external "radius of drainage," or, in other words, that the entire flow into the well passes across the external radius. In most cases a well is surrounded by other wells draining adjoining areas so that the "radius of drainage" is not a line of constant pressure with flow equal to the flow into the well but rather a contour of zero pressure gradient across which no flow occurs, production being due to the expansion of the liquid within the area. The radial flow steady state pressure distribution for this case does not seem to be extensively used despite the fact that the mathematical analysis has been given in detail' and the results are simple and generally applicable. 'The object of this discussion is to develop this result from a physical rather than a mathematical viewpoint, thereby aiding intuition in judging circumstances to which it may be applicable. If the production rate at a well in an unsaturated reservoir is maintained constant while no flow occurs across the outer radius a steady state will soon be reached in which the flow rate or pressure gradient is constant with time at all points in the reservoir. To preserve such a condition it is necessary that the pressure decline at the same rate at all points in the reservoir, that is, the curves of pressure versus radial distance at successive times are all parallel. Then each unit volume of oil is expanding at the same rate and contributing an equal share to the production. The rate of flow q across any circle r is thus proportional to the volume of the reservoir between r and the external radius re, or q = qw (I-r2/r2e) ......(1) where q, is the production from the well and it is assumed that rw is very small compared with re.
