Oklahoma produced about 40,000,000 bbl. less crude oil in 1930 than it did in 1929, but developed the largest initial production from current well completions ever recorded in its history. The output of this year would have exceeded all previous years had it not been for state-wide production curtailment. The record initial production of 5,911,982 bbl. from new oil wells completed during the year is accounted for entirely by the rapid development of the Oklahoma City field. Completions declined to the lowest levels since 1909, as a result of a marked reduction in number of dry holes incident to reduced wildcat exploration. Leasing was most active in western and northern counties of the state west of Oklahoma City, but on a much smaller scale than in the preceding year. Geological and geophysical surveys were likewise most active in this western territory. The urge to deeper objectives resulted in the discovery of oil on the Cement fold. Changing economic conditions have created a distress situation among the marginal operators in northeastern localities of the state. Elsewhere in the state production records and successful exploitation of new supplies have been eclipsed by a new social concept of the industry in accord with natural economic developments. Many of the producers of crude oil have organized for a voluntary stabilization of the industry by regulating the output of wells. To enforce their measures these operators have sought for and secured the support of the state. Consequently, the current position of the crude-oil producer is not unlike that of the natural-gas producer—withdrawal of supplies in accordance with market needs. And while the industry as a whole is artificially stabilized by these measures individual operators and some of the integrated concerns suffer hardships. Oil Developments and Production The early operations in Oklahoma were confined to northeastern and eastern localities, beginning in 1885. The first commercial oil wells were completed in 1894, near Chelsea in Craig County, from Cherokee sands in the lower portion of the Pennsylvanian section. Scattered

Rapid growth rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

THE object of this investigation was to determine the distribution of chemical elements within a large, killed alloy-steel ingot, by sulphur printing and quantitative chemical analysis. With regard to segregation in steel ingots, the factors of melting practice, pouring temperatures, mold design, etc., and the mechanics of solidification and its attendant functions, have been the subject of intensive study over a period of years by many investigators. Notable among these is the Sub-Committee of the No. 5 Committee of the British Iron and Steel Institute. For an exposition 0f the many problems awaiting the researcher on the heterogeneity of steel ingots, the methods of attacking these problems, together with some of the answers, the reader is referred to the nine reports and numerous papers of that committee and its membership. STEELMAKING DATA Melt.-The heat was made in a 70-ton direct arc-type basic electric furnace. Furnace charge consisted of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, most of it in the form of heavy mill scrap. All of the scrap was charged cold. The standard double-slag method was employed, the heat being finished under a strong carbide slag. Aluminum was used as the deoxidizing agent. Tapping temperature, as observed with an optical pyrometer, was 3000°F. Detail of Mold and Ingot Size.-Details of the ingot mold and the ingot itself are given in Fig. I. Teeming.-Teeming temperature of the subject ingot as observed with an optical pyrometer was 2830°F. The ingot was top-poured directly through a 1 ½ in. nozzle and required 7 min., 44 sec. to fill up to the hot top. An additional 2 min., 30 sec. were required to fill the hot top. The ingot was stripped hot and charged with the remainder of the heat into an annealing furnace. There it was given the standard annealing cycle used for these ingots. Subsequent heat-treatments are described elsewhere in this paper. SECTIONING AND PREPARATION FOR SULPHUR PRINTING Because of previous favorable experience in sectioning ingots up to 21 ½ in. square with an oxyacetylene torch, it was decided to use this method to section the subject ingot. The ingot was preheated to 900°F. for 12 hr. It was then placed on a steel bed in a horizontal position so that the longitudinal axis was level and parallel to the track of the motor-driven torch carrier. Two cuts were made, one 2 in. above the longitudinal axis and the other 2 in. below. The time required to make each cut was approximately 75 min. The cutting operation is shown in Figs. z and 3. The 4-in. thick slab was mmediately charged into a furnace standing at 1200°F.

The past 15 years have seen rapid advances in the metallurgy of materials for drill machinery and bits, but rock drilling itself continues to be largely an art. Jet piercing, roller bit rotary drilling, and rotary percussion are all promising new techniques, but the percussion rock drill, still used for 90 pct of the blastholes in U. S. hard-rock mining, has under- gone no major modification since pneumatic machines were first used successfully in the 1860's. This singular lack of progress stems directly from ignorance of the nature of impact failure of rock and the fundamentals of rock penetration in general. For nearly three-quarters of a century, mining engineers did not know what went on at the bottom of a drillhole.

In the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features, which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere that they hare long presented exceptional dificulties, not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries—the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

A simplified method is described for the prepauatior~ of comnposite samples for determination of one quadrant of an X-ray pole figure of a sheet material by the Schulz reflection method. Other special conzposite sampling methods were used to investigate specific areas of the pole figures. Plotting nets for these sampling plans were drawn by a computer. Step-scanning techniques were used to obtain detailed information about specific regions of a pole figure. Satisfactory pole figures were obtained for large-grained (0.5 to 1 in. diam) sheet materials. COMPOSITE sampling techniques for preparing one quadrant of an X-ray pole figure have been reported by a number of authors.'-5 All of these methods are similar in that they use a composite sample prepared by stacking and holding together coupons cut from a sheet material. The schulze reflection technique is applicable to the composite sample so that only minor corrections are needed for defocusing and absorption effects. Also, a relatively large area of a sheet is sampled through the use of multiple cross sectional pieces. In general, sampling methods necessary to obtain a composite-type specimen have been formidable enough to discourage their use in routine pole figure determinations. This paper presents a versatile sampling technique which is simpler than those previously described along with an accurate method for obtaining stereographic plotting nets for any orientation of a composite specimen surface. A step-scanning technique is used to obtain more quantitative determinations of specific regions in pole figures, and the composite technique is satisfactorily applied to determine pole figures of very large grained sheet materials. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS TECHNIQUES Mueller and ~nott' first proposed a technique for obtaining one complete quadrant of an X-ray pole figure by using a sheet sample and six different composite samples in which the individual coupons were aligned and held together by two types of jigs. Data from the seven different samples were overlapped to obtain a single quadrant. ~eieran~ and Lopata and ~ula~ obtained a complete quadrant of a pole figure from a single sample prepared by forming a cube from coupons cut from a sheet. These coupons were bonded together using an epoxy cement, and a cut was made at 54.7 deg to the normal, transverse, and rolling directions of the sheet, Fig. I. The normal direction of the cut face projects into one quadrant of a stereographic projection at equal angles to the three principal orthogonal reference directions mentioned above. X-ray reflection data obtained along a spiral path in physical space could then be plotted on a stereographic net offset 54.7 deg from the normal, as shown in Fig. 2. A rotation about an axis representing the surface normal is designated as a, and a rotation about an axis lying in the plane of the surface is 4. From Fig. 2 it is apparent that a tilting angle of no more than 55 deg @ is necessary to obtain the complete quadrant. ~eber~ devised an improved sampling technique by cutting coupons 45 deg to the rolling direction of a sheet, stacking and bonding these with an epoxy cement at an angle of 54.7 deg to a reference plane, and finally grinding and lapping a flat specimen surface parallel to this plane. An important consideration of this technique and that of Lopata and ~ula~ is variation in the diffracting power of the specimen surface due to the bonding medium. While any composite-type sample will have some such variation due to boundaries between coupons, the problem can be minimized by elimination of the bonding medium and by avoiding prolonged etching times which could lead to significant inter lame llar attack of the coupon faces. Samples of synthetic magnetite were reduced in hydrogen-water vapor atmospheres in the temperature range 450o to 900oC. The reaction was always surface controlled, indicating the final products of reaction are nonfirotective. Three separate cases have been identified from the kinetic results: Case I, reduction of magnetite to iron below 570°C; Case II, reduction of magnetite to iron above 570°C; and Case 111, reduction of magnetite to wustite above 570 oC. In Cases I and 111 the kinetics have been explained by the formation of oxygen anion vacancies in the magnetite surface followed by associated diffusional processes. In Case 11 the observed kinetics have been related to the concentration of iron cation vacancies in the wustite layer formed, followed by associated steady-state diffusional processes. The concentration of cation vacancies in the wustite is maintained constant by the magnetite-wustite equilibrium. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been a subject of study and interest for many years. However, few attempts have been made to interpret the results in terms of the mechanism of reduction of an iron oxide by either hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Stalhane and Malmberg' using CO, H2, and CO-Hz mixtures, developed the rate expression: where m = mass of oxide reduced, t = time, k = a constant, s = surface area, P = partial pressure of of CO or H,, and P, = partial pressure of the reducing gas at equilibrium. The rate of reaction per unit area was proportional to the difference between the partial pressure of the reducing gas and its pressure at equilibrium. Hansen, Bitsianes, and Joseph2 studied the reduction of pellets of hematite to magnetite with mixtures of CO-CO,. They concluded that below 450°C the reaction proceeded according to a model in which CO reacts with the hematite surface producing an oxygen ion vacancy. The rate controlling step was then assumed to be oxygen ion diffusion through vacancies resulting in the formation of magnetite. They derived an expression giving the rate of reduction proportional to the cO/CO, ratio. Recently McKewan3 published results for the reduction of magnetite spheres in atmospheres below 570°C. He explained his results by an equation of the form where K, is the equilibrium constant for wustite-iron equilibrium attributed to the formation of wustite as an intermediate in the reduction of magnetite. According to McKewan, Kp is an equilibrium constant for H, -HO adsorption in which oxygen is deposited on the surface from the H,Oand subsequently acts as a poison for reduction by hydrogen. Sample Preparation and Experiments. In this work the authors used the same apparatus and experimental procedure employed in the hydrogen reduction of magnetite. Sintered disk samples weighing approximately 1.5 g and measuring 1.2 cm in diameter and 0.25 cm in thickness were prepared by a method described previously.4 Partial pressures of hydrogen and water vapor were controlled by bubbling hydrogen through a series of flasks containing distilled and deionized water maintained at constant temperature in an oil bath. The total flow rate of the reacting gases—hydrogen and water vapor—was approximately 0.5 liter per min. The entire external system was maintained at a temperature above the oil bath to prevent condensation of water vapor. This was accomplished by wrapping electrical resistance elements over all surfaces. The glass column containing the weighing system-a McBain balance suspended from a gold chain-was enclosed in an aluminum tube heated by nichrome resistance wire enclosed in an insulating material. The temperature of the glass column was held constant by means of a series of thermocouples connected in parallel to a Leeds and Northrup temperature controller. This was necessary since variations in temperature resulted in expansion and contraction of the glass column and could be readily observed with the cathetometer. AS a result of the study of social problems to which so much thought has been given in this country and Europe in the last half century, many employers of labor have come to think that some provision should be made for their workingmen in case of injury. There has been a growing tendency so to administer the laws governing industrial pursuits in these countries as to add self-interest on the part of capitalists, to the plea urged by humanity, that every possible care should be taken to guard the workers from accident; but as no care can guarantee immunity, there is a necessity to supplement these precautions by some method of providing pecuniary aid that shall be available when disabling accidents do occur. It was once a favorite idea of theorists on political economy, that in the ideal state of society every man should take care of himself, and that the less care or control there was assumed by any man over others' private affairs, the better; but this gospel of selfishness has had its day, and it is now generally recognized that in the existing state of affairs the stronger and richer cannot escape the duty of being to some extent, the keepers of their less fortunate brethren ; and, on the other hand, that an assumption of care for them involving to some extent an exercise of authority, is not a thing to he necessarily and always resisted. Out of these convictions, many efforts for the amelioration of the condition of workingmen have grown—which or one result have produced various plans which combine the con-

Since the opening of the Wheeler oil and gas field in Carter County and the discovery of oil near Lawton, Comanche County, Okla., in 1904, interest has been aroused regarding the origin of the oil in the Permian "Red Bed" region which lies between the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains on the north and the Red River on the south. The later development of the Healdton, Loco, Duncan, Fox, and Graham fields south and west of the Arbuckle Mountains has brought the region into prominence. Recent discoveries of Ordovician and of Pennsylvanian fossils in wells in the Healdton field and of Pennsylvanian fossils in the Fox and Graham fields are of such importance from a scientific and a commercial standpoint that the occurrences and the problems arising therefrom are here briefly described. Producing oil and gas sands in the southern Oklahoma fields, with the exception of those in the Cretaceous and underlying rocks in the vicinity of Madill, Marshall County, are associated with the Permian "Red Beds" or with the underlying Paleozoic strata. In the two fields farthest south of the Arbuckle Mountains, Healdton and Loco, production has been entirely confined to sands at depths of 700 to 1400 ft. (213 to 416 m.) and only recently has a producing sand as deep as 1860 ft. (567 m.)l been encountered. These sands are found near and below the base of the red rocks and were supposed by Wegemann and Heald2 to belong in large part to the basal Permian, Wichita formation, or to the immediately underlying formations. Fossils in the blue shales and in the limestones associated with the deeper sands now prove them to be Pennsylvanian and all the producing sands at Healdton are found to be of this age. In the fields nearest the Arbuckle Mountains, the Wheeler sands at a depth of about 700 ft. (213 m.) appear to be of Permian age,

The recovery of uranium from acid leach slurries by continuous ion exchange, or solvent extraction using sieve-plate pulse columns, is compared. Differences in processing costs are of prime concern and can be related to differences in the unit operations of the two methods, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the slurry. Parameters are defined for the operation of the solvent-in-pulp process and the design of the continuous ion exchange column. Pilot plant operating experience with both recovery systems is described, and an overall assessment of the relative costs is presented.

THE United Verde Copper Company's mine is at Jerome, Ariz. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron schist contact, with the orebodies extending about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. Three types of ore are mined; schist porphyry and the so-called "heavy" or "massive sulfide" ore. Approximately 50 per cent. of the total tonnage mined at present is of the latter class. A representative analysis of this ore indicates 42 to 46 per cent. sulfur. Because of the high sulfur content, blasting in this ore is an extremely hazardous operation. Not only does it endanger the lives of men who may be in the mine at blasting time but it also becomes a potential fire menace when timber is in close proximity to shots being fired in these massive sulfides. The origin of the fires of 38 years ago, embers of which are glowing to this day, may perhaps be attributed to dust explosions due to blasting in the massive sulfides of those, early square-set stopes.

MANY fires have occurred in the mines of Butte in recent years, and while all have been of a serious nature, simply because they were mine fires, six of them have been especially dangerous in respect to loss of life and property, and the expense of extinguishing or controlling them. It is not my intention to discuss the relative merits of methods used in fighting these different fires because the conditions under which they occurred varied in each case, and it was not always advisable to expend the large sum of money necessary to actually extinguish them if they could he bulk-headed off from the rest of the mine. It is needless to say that everything possible has been done to check all fires at the beginning, but without success in some cases; and it has then become necessary to bulkhead all connections to them, in which state several now exist. The mine fires of Butte, or fires in any mine, may be divided into two classes, namely: Those occurring in accessible workings, and those occurring in inaccessible workings; because these two conditions govern to the greatest extent the methods of fighting fires. Accessibility and in-accessibility in the case of mine fires concern not only new open workings and old closed workings, respectively, but also the condition of the ventilation in and about those places. When a fire is accessible at the start it should not be difficult to confine it to a small area and extinguish it in a relatively short time, but when it is impossible to actually reach a fire in old filled, abandoned workings, or there is no opening by which the gases may be conducted away from the fire zone, then the time consumed in changing those conditions permits the fire to increase to such an extent that it is a long, hard fight to overcome it.

Application of the cyclone to separation of undesirable -200-mesh clay, silt, and high-ash fractions from coal slurries was found to possess many economic and process advantages. Up to 93.3 pct removal was attained at rates of 113 to 155 gpm per sq ft of cross-sectional area.

Two subjects certain to incite interest among a few practicing engineers and almost all engineering educators are professional recognition and decline in engineering enrollments. It is not surprising that this interest on the part of the educators is universal; it is only regrettable that such an interest on the part of the practitioners is not more widespread. In fact, it is probably the hope of the profession that some of the more penetrating searches now being made into the nature of engineering will generate sufficient cause for perplexity that members of the profession will assume a significant degree of personal concern toward purely professional matters.

THE location, mode of occurrence of ore, and preliminary tests leading to the development of the present leaching process and the building of the present plant on the property of the New Cornelia Copper Co. at Ajo, have been described in previous papers presented to the Institute and in the, discussions thereof.1 It is sufficient to say that these tests began early in July, 1912, and were continued to the close of January, 1916; that small tests at Douglas were followed by the construction of a 1-ton plant at the mine; and this was followed by the operation of a 40-ton plant for 14 mo. In all about 15,000 T. of ore were treated experiment-.

IN the oil-refining industry, steel comprises by far the greatest proportion of the materials used in construction work, but with an enormous number of alloy steels and nonferrous alloys available, and a greater knowledge of their properties and corrosion resistance; a substitu-tion first in the "hot spots" and then in locations of moderately severe corrosive conditions will be made as the greater expense can be justified. In new construction work, advantage is taken of the experience already gained and appropriate materials used, whether for high temperatures and pressures demanding additional strength or for corrosive conditions. The locations, however, where equipment in operation constantly requires replacement will soon become evident, as will the necessity for replacement in more resistant materials, if considerable down-time is to be avoided. In what direction and how far to go in the matter of alloys then becomes a question of the highest importance. Obviously, any replace-ment with more costly material must be. justified economically by the promise of longer life, thereby saving both material and installation costs besides the reduction of loss of production. Where the equipment is overcapacity and a regular schedule of cleaning periods is in force, the last item frequently must be ruled out and justification made on the basis of the first two only. Installation of material that will outlast the remainder of the equipment and have no recovery value must also be avoided; this is particularly important in temporary construction or in old equipment that will soon become obsolete.

FOR the past several years there has been considerable interest in the development of zirconium and zirconium alloys for application in nuclear reactors. In a portion of the development work being conducted, attention has been given to the development of high-strength zirconium alloys. One of the most outstanding alloys developed in the course of this work is Zr-4 wt pct Sn-1.6 wt pct Mo.' Fabrication and Test Methods Over 50 ingots of zirconium containing either tin and molybdenum or both have been evaluated in the process of selection of an optimum composition. At the Atlanta meeting of the Institute in October,' 1895, some brief remarks were made by Mr. Wilkens on the above subject. It is the object of this paper to set forth the substance of these previous statements, embodying therewith additional information gained since that time, and a brief illustrated description of the method and means of the separation.* Lack of time will unfortunately not allow as complete a resume of the subject in all its phases, especially those relating to the scientific side of the question, as its novelty and importance would warrant, so that even this paper must be considered a preliminary one. It is hoped that at some future meeting of the Institute we may find an opportunity of presenting supplementary data of interest. The paradoxical title above used requires some explanation. The term " non-magnetic material " is applied to such substances as have heretofore been considered non-magnetic in the arts, more especially in the practice of ore-concentration. Scientifically, it has been shown by Faraday, Plucker, Wiedemann and other physicists that magnetism is an inherent property common to all substances, solid, liquid and gaseous, i.e., all suhstances are either attracted or repelled by the poles of a magnet, although ill the great majority of cases the manifestation of this
