In the study 208 heavy mineral concentrates (pan samples) from Jameson Land, East Greenland, are considered. Each concentrate has been analysed (by spectroscopy) for the content of (approx.) 25 elements. Furthermore the exact sampling position and the geological characteristics of the environment have been registered. In the study is shown how different multivariate methods combined with geological knowledge of the area can be used in the interpretation and classification of the data. Special emphasis is put on the problem of finding reliable expressions for the background level of the element concentrations in the area. This is done by means of severel discrimination procedures. The other main subject is a demonstration of the applicability of isoscore maps - originating from factor analyses - in the evaluation of the co-variability of the data, and thus give another way of classifying the individual samples according to the content of different elements.

The phosphate ore, or matrix, is a mixture of white pebbles of phosphate, of all sizes but mostly minus I to 1 1/4-in. diameter, in a matrix that varies from nearly all silica-sand gangue to a mixture of pebble, sand and clay. There is an occasional streak of hard pan of sand cemented with iron oxide, which can be drilled without much difficulty.

This paper presents the kinetics of leaching pure wulfenite (PbMoO,) with sodium sulfide solutions. Wulfenite dissolves in the presence of sulfide ion according to the following reaction: PbMoO , + S= PbS + MOO;. Synthetic galena is formed and molybdenum is released to solution as molybdate ion. The reaction follows the shrinking core model and the leaching mechanism involves mixed kinetics where both diffusion and chemical reaction are rate controlling. Molybdenum extraction is explained in terms of temperature, particle size, and sodium sulfide concentration.

Normal banded structure,* exhibiting bands or layers of mineral symmetrically arranged from the sides to the center of the vein, appears to be by no means common in the Republic of Mexico. When the bands of quartz form interlocking crystals in the center (" comb-structure "), the evidence that the filling has taken place in an open space is complete. This also applies in the case of any mineral the fibers of which are perpendicular to the walls, and which presents here and there, in a central line, cavities or vugs lined with crystals (geodes); but it does not follow that the whole width of the banded vein represents that of the original open fissure. Once again, the United States Congress is debating the minerals depletion allowance. If the past is any indication, the debate will quickly become politicized. Representatives of the densely populated but mineral-poor Northeast will no doubt claim that percentage depletion is sheer robbery of tax dollars perpetrated by corporations to line the pockets of wealthy investors. Many southern and western legislators, on the other hand, will portray the depletion allowance as our only savior from mineral deprivation, blackmail from foreign producers, and a stone-age nonmineral existence. Although this characterization of the usual minerals depletion debate may be overstated, the most unfortunate aspect is that the genuinely important role of the depletion allowance in domestic minerals production is often obscured in congressional hearings. This article will try to provide a basic understanding of the minerals depletion allowance, the underlying rationale, and the increasingly important role the allowance will play in the future. Although the discussions and conclusions can be extended to the metal mining industry in general, most of the examples are drawn from the copper industry.

This paper describes the results of an underground coal mine trial installation of a shielded trailing cable. The cable was a three conductor, round, type SHC-GC and was installed on a shuttle car in a conventional room-and-pillar mining section. The purpose of the study was to evaluate proposed legislation that would require shielding on low-voltage trailing cables. Such legislation would require machine modifications to cable reels, packing glands, and couplers; increase cable splicing complexity; and necessitate additional splicing materials and training. Furthermore, fault location might be more difficult. Even though shielding will cause some problems for the mine operator, it can reduce electrical shock hazard to mine workers. This paper presents information that mine operators can use to solve most of the problems encountered if they are required to install shielded cables. The in-mine evaluation was funded by the US Bureau of Mines; however, the views and conclusions in this paper are those of the author and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing official policies of the US government.

Mine opening stability was investigated by loading model openings to failure. Eight-inch plaster blocks were cast with small uniform section openings passing through the centers. After curing, the models were jacketed and loaded hydrostatically in a closed vessel. Opening size, shape, and orientation were varied to determine how these factors influence opening stability.

Because of high production demands at San Manuel mine (approximately 40,000 tpd) and the relatively narrow grade range of the orebody, no attempt is made by the company to mine selectively. The caving sequence is laid out to meet the production demands, and proceeds in a manner to induce the least amount of weight on extraction openings. Once an area is undercut, draw control procedures are applied uniformly until the area has been mined to depletion. The orebody, located 50 miles northeast of Tucsoil, Ariz., is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite disseminated throughout a structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rock over- lain by several hundred feet of relatively competent andesitic conglomerate. When undercut, the granite ore caves readily into fragments which usually pass through the grizzly without either excessive breaking or an undue amount of secondary blasting.

This paper describes an important function of mining in Southeast Missouri. The practice is a necessary procedure to prevent disintegration of the pillars. Although the technique is peculiar to this district, it might have application in other mines using room and pillar method.

Early in 1957 St. Joseph Lead Co. announced discovery of three new centers of iron ore deposition in east central Missouri.1 The discovery resulted from exploratory drilling in the vicinity of a magnetic anomaly or high. A deep hole, drilled into the Pre-Cambrian porphyry to determine the cause of anomaly, penetrated a magnetite-rich deposit.2 The magnetic surveys that revealed the anomalies were begun by the Missouri Geological Survey in 1929 and were continued into the 1930's 3. At that time an area in Crawford County known as the Bourbon magnetic high was located. A second anomaly, similar in size and intensity, was discovered about six miles to the northeast in Franklin County in the vicinity of Sullivan. This area was not studied in detail until the early 1940's.
