A injeção de combustíveis auxiliares pelas ventaneiras dos altos-fornos vem se mostrando, nas últimas décadas, como uma técnica de redução do consumo de combustíveis e conseqüente redução de custo de produção de gusa. Uma das últimas técnicas de injeção de combustíveis auxiliares pelas ventaneiras, utilizada por algumas usinas siderúrgicas integradas a coque, no Brasil, nos últimos anos, é a injeção de carvão pulverizado e gás natural simultâneamente, aqui chamada de co-injeção. O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados obtidos na utilização desta modalidade de injeção em escala industrial.

Neste trabalho foram utilizadas amostras dos aços CA-50 e CA-60 utilizados na construção civil, para avaliar a corrosão pelos íons cloreto. Para tanto, medidas eletroquímicas foram realizadas em soluções de NaCl 2,0 g/L e 4,0 g/L, naturalmente aeradas. Verificou-se um processo de corrosão generalizada dos aços CA-50 e CA-60 nas duas concentrações avaliadas e uma forte influência do aumento da concentração no comportamento corrosivo de ambos os tipos de aço. Neste estudo comparativo, verificou-se que, além dos perfis potenciodinâmicos serem similares, a resistência de polarização conduziu a resultados da mesma ordem de magnitude, concluindo-se que não existe uma vantagem significativa ao uso de um em relação ao outro, no que se refere à resistência à corrosão.

O emprego de trabalho mecânico em ligas metálicas associado a aplicações de tratamentos térmicos estão entre os principais métodos para se conseguir alcançar aumento de resistência mecânica e manutenção de boa ductilidade. Este estudo busca avaliar a correlação entre deformação a frio, tratamento térmico, microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas da liga Ti35Nb2,5Sn. Para isso realizou-se laminação a frio empregando níveis de redução equivalentes a 70%, 80% e 90%. Em seguida, as amostras foram analisadas por meio das técnicas de microscopia ótica, difração de raios X e microdureza Vickers. Na sequência, tratamentos térmicos de envelhecimento foram aplicados em diferentes tempos para cada nível de deformação e os mesmos parâmetros foram avaliados. Observou-se significativo aumento de dureza após etapa de envelhecimento e as análises por metalografia e difração de raios X evidenciaram a presença de fases metaestáveis na matriz beta..

O objetivo do presente trabalho é investigar o escoamento de oxigênio no bocal convergente-divergente da lança utilizada nos convertedores BOF da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. As condições de sopros macio, normal e duro são analisadas através de ferramentas analíticas e computacional (CFD). Os resultados evidenciam que o contorno do bocal não promove uma expansão apropriada do escoamento, ocorrendo ondas de choque fortes no interior do mesmo e ocasionando perdas de energia cinética em todas as condições de sopro. Adicionalmente, as condições dos sopros macio e normal tornam a saída do bocal vulnerável ao desgaste térmico, devido à pressão de saída do bocal ser menor que a do ambiente.

Tradicionalmente propriedades mecânicas tais como: Limite de escoamento e dureza em processos de laminação a frio são avaliadas antes e após o processo devido a dificuldade de obter estes valores após cada cadeira de laminação. Atualmente são empregadas simulações numéricas, onde inúmeros modelos usam valores de tensões antes e após laminação e obtém-se uma predição destes valores entre cadeiras, normalmente utilizando aproximações ou dados conseguidos em algum laminador piloto. A finalidade deste trabalho foi estudar uma bobina processada de um aço IF, em escala industrial, num laminador de tiras a frio de cinco cadeiras avaliando algumas propriedades mecânicas e correlacionando os aspectos microestruturais das amostras retiradas entre as cadeiras deste laminador. Para o estudo da evolução das propriedades mecânicas do início ao final do processo, foram preparadas amostras para os ensaios mecânicos e para análise das mudanças microestruturais foram preparadas amostras por técnicas de metalografia. O resultado apresentado após estas avaliações mostram o comportamento mecânico diferenciado após cada redução.

The highly competitive business environment of the international metals industry is driving demand for more cost-effective operation of steel making facilities, rolling mills, and strip processing lines. Achieving stable operation is vital if the steel industry is to produce high-quality products constantly and productively. In recent years, advances in computer processing speeds, data acquisition rates, and data storage capacity have rapidly led to greater use of the new technologies of big data, analytics, the IoT, and AI by control system designers and process engineers, and the introduction of industrial applications. The “Smart Rolling Mill” solutions for hot strip mills have been developed by our group with the goal of achieving sophisticated, state of the art, and automated operation in steel rolling mills. The various solution engines improve process stability, increase the performance of mill equipment, and provide improved process control. These solution engines are based on extensive knowledge of the rolling process and the associated control systems. Two solution engines in particular are the diagnosis systems for rolling condition and for product quality that contribute to cost-effective operation and lower yield loss. This paper focuses on the diagnosis systems for rolling condition and for product quality in hot strip mills. Advanced information technologies using big data analytics and machine learning are applied to real-time data collected from the automation system that controls operation and the rolling process. We have developed diagnosis solutions for rolling condition and product quality utilizing predictive and clustering diagnosis. Predictive diagnosis prevents serious problems by detecting changes in the state of the plant or in the rolling condition. Clustering diagnosis classifies patterns of fluctuation in product quality trend charts, providing effective tuning guidance for improving product quality. This paper describes these applications with several examples.

Placas de Circuito Interno (PCI’s) são partes fundamentais de um computador, uma vez que são responsáveis pelo bom funcionamento deste. Porém, seu descartadas em áreas clandestinas, podem causar danos ao meio ambiente e a saúde pública, pois estas placas podem ter na sua composição elementos tóxicos que as tornam perigosas. O presente estudo visa qualificar e quantificar os metais presentes na fração não magnética das PCI’s, a fim de que subsequentes processos de recuperação de metais possam ser aplicados. Para que as análises pudessem ser feitas, as PCIs foram submetidas a etapas de moagem, quarteamento, separação magnética e digestão em água régia. As placas foram moídas em um moinho de martelos, utilizando grelhas de 2 mm. O resíduo cominuído seguiu para a etapa de separação magnética, obtendo-se duas frações, uma fração magnética e uma fração não magnética. Em seguida, a fração não magnética foi quarteada em amostras de 20 ± 5 g. Para realizar ensaio de digestão em água régia, foi escolhida aleatoriamente uma amostra. A digestão foi realizada durante 24 h a temperatura ambiente usando-se uma proporção sólido: líquido de 20:1. O licor obtido nos ensaio de digestão em água régia foi levado para análise química por espectrometria de emissão óptica por indução de plasma (ICP-OES). Os resultados mostraram que as placas de circuito impresso de computadores contêm na sua fração não magnética aproximadamente 60% dos metais da placa de vídeo.

O presente trabalho, resultante da parceria público-privada entre a empresa Zeppelin Systems Latin America e a Universidade Federal do ABC, tem por objetivo validar o desempenho em termos de taxa de transporte e consumo energético de um vaso de pressão não convencional, o equipamento atua como alimentador de sólidos industrial para transporte pneumático, desenvolvido para operação de transporte de materiais em fase densa. Calcário é usado como material de deslocamento durante os ensaios no Centro de Testes da empresa, foi verificado que o novo injetor pressurizado tem menores dimensões e complexidade de operação, e possui taxa de transporte e consumo específico efetivo equiparáveis às versões de vasos de pressão convencional.

Under the new normal state, blast furnace outputneeds to be adapted to the market demand, however the limitation in blast furnace output has significant impact on blast furnace operation and is prone to cause inactive furnace hearth and higher fuel ratio. To address such problems, some practices to maintain stable and smooth operation of blast furnace in case of output limitation are proposed based on data analysis philosophy, which allows the blast flow and hence the top pressure to be determined based on the hot metal output, and adequate kinetic energy of blast supply can be assured by adjusting the tuyeres. Matching between the oxygen enrichment and the pulverized coal injection is also proposed based on theoretical flametemperature, and burden distribution cycle calculation method is proposed, whichoffersnew approach for analyzing the change in burden distribution pattern.

A rolling simulation system has been developed to calculate the macroscopic rate of deformation, stress, strain, and temperature fields by using a novel meshless method. The model is based on two-dimensional traveling slice assumption. The slices are aligned towards the rolling direction. The initial size of the billet, bloom or slab and the geometry of the grooves at each rolling stand, the distances between the rolling stands, and continuous or reverse rolling can be arbitrarily considered. The purpose of this paper is to complement these development by predicting and visualizing also the grain size of steel over the strand cross-section for each position in the rolling mill. The grain size models have been in one-way coupled to the macroscopic calculations. First the critical strain for dynamic recrystallization is being checked. If the calculated strain is higher than that, considering also the time for meta-dynamic recrystallization, dynamic or meta-dynamic grain size calculations are carried out. If the strain is too low then only the static recrystallization is considered together with its required time. Finally, austenite grain size and ferrite grain size are calculated respectively as the steel cools down. The listed physical models are based on collection of empirical relations found in literature. The user of the system is free to choose or create the model he wants with his own parameters. The simulation system has been coded as a user friendly computer application for an industrial use based on C# and .NET framework and runs on regular PCs. The computational time for a rolling simulation is usually less than one hour and can thus be straightforwardly used for optimization of the rolling mill design in a reasonable time.

O Processo Bayer para a produção de Óxido de Alumínio consiste em dissolver o alumínio presente na minério de alumínio (Bauxita) com soda cáustica à quente. Os resíduos insolúveis são separados por decantação e filtração. Após lavagem deste resíduo para a recuperação da alumina e soda cáustica ele é transferido para áreas de disposição. A Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio produz 420 mil toneladas de alumínio por ano gerando cerca de 2.400 toneladas de resíduo de bauxita por dia. Este resíduo é transferido para uma área de disposição, denominada Palmital, com capacidade de estocagem para mais 9 anos. Atualmente, o Palmital contém cerca de 2 milhões de metros cúbicos de água sobrenadante. Esta água contém alumínio e soda cáustica dissolvidos que podem ser reutilizados na Refinaria de Alumina. Este trabalho estuda formas de reutilização desta água sobrenadante visando aumentar a vida útil do Palmital, ou seja, aumentar o volume disponível para disposição de resíduo de bauxita.

This work was a continuous and multidisciplinary development. Through studies of the blowing process and its parameters results, evolutions, improvements and adjustments were made on the lance’s hot face with Slagless® technology, as well in the process parameters and mitigating actions of the projection of materials out of the converter. The main results are the increase in the nozzle’s life with a “record mark” of 1785 heats, and water leakage occurrence in the cartridge decreased considerably reaching the mark of one year without any occurrence.

The Baosteel Zhanjiang 5,050m3 blast furnaces have been built with highly independent integration and innovation technologies and represented the state of the art of the world’s huge BFs. The proper of BF1 and BF2 is designed with long-campaign technology; both BFs share the same set of stockhouse, water and PCI systems; the BCQS serial-hopper no-bell top, TRT and blower are all local equipment as applied; four top-combustion stoves systems are matched; the BFG is cleaned by fully dry process; and the automation control system for the main process is self integrated. The BFs have been started up and performing with sound indicators. Their smooth proceedings symbolize China’s huge blast furnace ironmaking technology ascending a new high.

More and more Hot Strip Mills are facing defects on their products that lead to a rejection of complete product batches by their customers. Several of those defects are induced by excessive work roll degradation. This paper is focussed on the understanding of work roll corrosion and oxidation mechanisms in a hot strip mill. Several laboratory trials (Hot rolling simulator, cyclic oxidation) have highlighted important factors influencing corrosion of work rolls as well as helping the understandings of oxidation of a work roll in the roll bite and along the roll circumference in a stand. The attention is focussed on several elements present in water used in HSM for direct roll cooling (e.g. chloride, bactericides, sulphates, phosphates) and their effect on roll surface degradation. The second part of this paper is focused on the understanding of work roll oxidation along the roll circumference. The effects of roll composition, roll temperature, water composition and water temperature have been studied in order to understand the oxidation/corrosion mechanisms in a HSM.

In this article, technologies of unburned Al2O3-MgO (UAM) refractories are demonstrated in terms of microstructure evolution. During operation, Mg2+ diffuses from MgO to Al2O3 through the liquid phase to form spinel (MgAl2O4) network. Molten slag tends to penetrate along the voids in the spinel network structure and spinel dissolves in the penetrated slag. Therefore, maintaining a high degree of spinel saturation in the penetrated molten slag is important. In order to achieve the condition described above, suppression of overall mass transfer through penetrated slag is effective. This is achievable by evolution of complicated spinel network structure with small pore diameter, which increases the flow resistance of molten slag. Thus, optimization of refractory composition and fabricating conditions, with the aim of creating on improved spinel network, is essential. The effectiveness of spinel network improvement was validated by commercial applications. According to the investigation of UAM brick after use, further densification due to heating under restrained conditions was recognized. Hence, it was concluded that the evolution of the spinel network structure in UAM refractories is essential technology needed to improve durability.

In 2010 Danieli & C. S.p.A. put into operation a new Pickling Tandem Mill in Cremona (Italy) at Acciaieria Arvedi, the last Pickling line coupled Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM) in Europe. The plant was tailor-made to suit the specific requirements of this customer; a very broad range of sizes and grades (IF to AHSS as well as DP and TRIP1000) including ultra-thin hot band can be processed, achieving a total capacity of 1.6 Mt/y. The Danieli & C. S.p.A. Turboflo® process was selected because of its proven efficiency and ability to handle ultra-thin gauges at speeds exceeding 400 mpm in the pickling tanks. All the equipment, i.e. pickling section and rolling mills was provided with the last generation of Danieli market-oriented technologies. Danieli & C. S.p.A. - with the support of Arvedi and feedback from the field - is continuously improving its technical design solutions and optimizing plant operations.

As matérias primas para Alto Forno devem ter qualidade física adequada para melhor controle do processo e estabilidade operacional. A distribuição granulométrica e consequentemente sua estabilidade são importantes, pois interferem na porosidade e permeabilidade no interior do Alto-Forno, criando assim uma condição adequada e específica de marcha com reflexo na estabilidade da produção de gusa. A Sinterização da ThyssenKrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (TKCSA) foi projetada sem britagem secundária, devido à fase de ajustes no processo operacional e baixa produtividade havia dificuldade para controlar a fração grossa do sinter (> 50 mm), impactando na distribuição granulométrica do sinter. Visando reduzir os desvios da qualidade física, estudou-se a melhor relação da altura de camada x velocidade da esteira encontrando um ponto de equilíbrio entre os níveis de produção e qualidade especificada que, juntamente com o início da operação do britador secundário, resultou na garantia da qualidade física do sinter para os Altos Fornos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o desenvolvimento e resultados deste estudo.

In today’s highly competitive market situation, it is of outmost importance for EAF steel makers to optimise their processes in order to reduce operating costs and to improve safety and reliability of the equipment. The laser based off-gas analysis technology, With laser units installed on the fix duct, downstream the combustion gap, uses the “Tuneable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy” (TDLAS). The system performs real-time off-gas emissions measurements of CO, CO2, O2, H2O and temperature. A closed-loop operation is in place for dynamic control of the chemical energy package combustion/post-combustion of CO, H2 and CH4 gases into the EAF furnace shell. A statistical framework which builds on a data analysis engine, based on Danieli Automation Q3Intelligence technology, evaluates the “fingerprint” of the process represented by average and deviation trends of both gases and other process parameters. Process fingerprinting is conceived both for offline profile optimisation and on-line control of the refining process. This paper describes how the technology has been applied and the results achieved at ACCIAIERIE BERTOLI SAFAU (Italy) 100 t AC Electric Arc Furnace.

In today’s world, the requirement of Steel Producers to revamp and modernize their blast furnaces on-time, safely and with the latest technology is paramount. In addition they must meet the detailed design, construction and safety legislation and regulations, which can be different for the various countries around the world. Siemens MT is renowned for its ability to perform Blast Furnace rebuilds, relines and modernisations within extremely tight time frames and in a safe manner. Modular Blast Furnace construction concepts have been perfected to minimise project duration and plant downtime for furnace rebuilds. Safety and certainty are the keys for success. Siemens MT are constantly introducing new technologies into the market place including cyclone gas cleaning and triple external cone gas scrubber, along with step changes in technology such as dry gas cleaning and dry slag granulation. The economic environment and the continuing requirement for improved environmental performance, drive many of these innovations. This paper describes some of the latest rebuild reference projects of Siemens MT, along with the latest technical innovations installed on these furnaces, and some of the construction methodology used for a safe and secure rebuild.
