The chlorination rate with CCl4 was unexpectedly slower than carbochlorination using chlorine under the same reaction conditions. Chlorination with CCl4 was topochemical and the amount of monazite reacted after different periods suggested that the kinetic control step was the reaction between CCl4 and the monazite core at the interface. The kinetic order of the reaction was 0.5. The presence of a complex former, AlCl3, promoted the chemical vapour transport of rare-earth chlorides as complexes

The kinetics of leaching galena with ferric chloride and ferric nitrate have been examined as a function of ferric concentration, salt concentration, temperature and particle size. Diffusivity of ferric complex ions was also established as a function of ferric chloride concentration and temperature. In the presence of 3 M NaCl, leaching rate is controlled by product layer diffusion when ferric chloride is added as oxidant. With NaCl concentrations less than 3 mole/liter rate decreases with decreased NaCl concentration, and, thus, rate is apparently not controlled by product layer diffusion. It is suggested that rate is controlled by lead chloride solubility at the reaction interface under these conditions. When ferric nitrate is added as oxidant, leaching rate is limited by chemical reaction control. An electrochemical model is presented. Activation energies are 8.1 and 11.3 kcal/mol in the ferric chloride and ferric nitrate systems, respectively.

Heat and humidity buildup withn refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a lifesustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ.

This report presents the results of a study of mill tailings disposal practices and potential tailings dam stability problems. Recognizing the long period of time that would be required to develop the technology and practices necessary to significantly improve refuse disposal safety, the Bureau initiated this research effort as a first step in that development. Volume 1 includes a summary of conclusions and recommendations resulting from the overall research effort; discussions of disposal systems and methods, geology, seismicity, hydrology, and materials characteristics; evaluations of investigational techniques; discussions of usable interim generalized investigational, analytical and inspection procedures; discussion of general principles and presentation of a tailings technology manual outline; and discussion of needed future research am recommended programs.

The West Coast region of the South Island is situated astride the Pacific û Australian plate boundary zone. The most significant component of this zone is the Alpine Fault. A variety of reconstructions of the pre-Alpine Fault plate tectonic configuration of the New Zealand continental area have been attempted over the past 25 years or so. Most of these have not been closely constrained by a regional compilation of field data related to the age and horizontal displacement history of the Alpine Fault. A model in which the Alpine Fault was initiated no earlier than the interval 18 - 16.5 Ma (B.P.) is proposed, a significantly younger age of inception than has been widely accepted as the onset of dextral displacement along the plate boundary through the South Island. A subsequent history of displacement is presented consistent with the West Coast basin stratigraphy. The alluvial gold content of some parts of the Miocene to Pleistocene conglomerate sequences is also discussed.

Ammonia, the principal source of fixed nitrogen, was produced by 16 companies at 31 plants in the United States during 2003. Fifty-five percent of U.S. ammonia production capacity was centered in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas because of their large reserves of natural gas, the dominant domestic feedstock. Production In 2004, U.S. producers operated at about 59 percent of their rated capacity. The United States remained the world’s second largest ammonia producer and consumer following China. Urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphates, nitric acid and ammonium sulfate were the major derivatives of ammonia in the United States, in descending order of importance.

This paper describes the design and construction of two high-capacity rock anchors to restrain a supplementary backstay for the Bear Mountain Bridge, which is a suspension bridge spanning the Hudson River about 40 miles north of New York City. The supplementary backstay was installed to relieve a portion of the tension in the southern main cable, which had been creeping in recent years. The two new rock anchors were 1,200 kip capacity each, installed at a batter to depths of 59 feet. This paper describes the subsurface investigation, group capacity analysis, installation and load testing. The rock anchors included strain gages connected to the monitoring system for the bridge. The paper describes the long term strain gage data which shows no change in stress distribution in either anchor.

In surface mining operations, truck haulage is the largest item in the operating costs, constituting 50 to 60% of the total. In order to reduce this cost, it is necessary to allocate and dispatch the trucks efficiently. This paper describes shovel and truck operation models and optimization approaches for the allocation and dispatching of trucks under various operating conditions. Closed queuing network theory is employed for the allocation of trucks and linear programming for the purpose of truck dispatching to shovels. A case study was applied for the Orhaneli Open Pit Coal Mine in Turkey. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures (mine throughput, mean number of trucks, mean waiting time, etc.) for planning purposes when the truck fleet is composed of identical trucks. A computational study is presented to show how choosing the optimum number of trucks and optimum dispatching policy affect the cost of moving material in a truck-shovel system. The Juneau Office of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the environmental permitting process for major mines in Alaska to identify the effects ecosystem management has had or could have on the permitting process. To date, ecosystem management affects major mine permitting in Alaska primarily through the NEPA environmental assessment process. In Alaska, only the Forest Service has instituted ecosystem management in an overt and organized manner, while other agencies are doing so less directly. In recent Bureau of Mines publications, the mine permitting process has been described using case studies of several recently permitted mines in Alaska. The insights into the permitting process and the conclusions of these reports are reviewed and summarized. Several ecosystem management issues were identified in the case studies, including the need for: effective communication between agencies; standardization and coordination of NEPA environmental impact assessment and environmental monitoring programs among agencies, and assessment and selection of alternatives based on risks to ecosystems regardless of jurisdictional boundaries or environmental media-specific regulations. Ecosystem management could be used as a way to systematize, organize, standardize, and coordinate permitting and monitoring requirements and management perspectives among government agencies and project proponents.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPF's) reduce the concentration of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and may reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) in diesel exhaust. Asamera Minerals' Cannon Mine first installed CDPF's in 1987, and currently has 12 diesel-powered vehicles equipped with CDPF's. The Cannon Mine and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to evaluate the durability and performance of a CDPF. One of the CDPF's used at the mine was periodically evaluated in the USBM's diesel emissions laboratory after 839, 1,584, and 2,881 h of in-mine service. The objectives of this report are to present results from the USBM's evaluation of this CDPF, to describe the Cannon Mine's experience and cost analysis of using CDPF's, and to make recommendations for the future use of CDPF's. CDPF's improve air quality at the Cannon Mine, but they frequently become plugged and are subject to excessive mechanical shocks and stress, shortening their useful life. Mine records indicate that CDPF's account for 0.8 to 4.9 pct of the vehicles' operating cost at the lVine. CDPF life to date has ranged from 1,671 h to more than 5,992 h. Laboratory tests of the CDPF determined that DPM removal efficiency decreased and regeneration temperature increased over time.

NIOSH research has focused on the monitoring and the control of methane levels in active mine workings. Response times for instrumentation using catalytic heat-of-combustion sensor technology were evaluated. NIOSH research has modelled the flow of methane gas onto long-wall faces and gobs, developed engineering controls to limit methane levels during mining, and designed coalbed and gob degasification systems. Available methane control systems have been challenged by recent developments in longwall and room-and-pillar mining systems. This includes increased face advance rates leading to increased productivities, increased longwall panel sizes, and the generally deeper workings of U.S. coal mines. The potentially violent nature of any underground explosion or ignition requires the measurement, control, and reduction of methane emissions into the mine environment for continued worker safety.

The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.

The aim of this paper is to present the operative solutions devised and then adopted to implement the underexcavation (soil extraction) of the Tower of Pisa, by means of soil extraction. The intervention has been performed by the Consorzio Progetto Torre di Pisa, a joint venture made of five qualified Italian companies (Trevi S.p.A. , Rodio S.p.A., Italsonda S.p.A., Ismes -Enel Hydro S.p.A., Bonifica S.p.A.), selected for their experience in the field of monitoring and restoration of monuments, structural design, foundation engineering and specialised works in underground conditions. Since 1991 the Consorzio has been charged with the specific task of implementing, within the contractual frame of a Concession, all the decisions made by the International Multidisciplinary Commission appointed by the Italian Government the previous year, with the aim at solving the «problem» of the Tower, strengthening the structure and stabilising its foundation. The Trevi Group, which is represented by Trevi S.p.A. in the above mentioned Consorzio, has given and is giving its direct and constant contribution and is engaged in supplying the special equipment to the operation and the drilling technology which has been successfully adopted to date.

Mine planning and scheduling is based on using a geological model for the deposit. Blocks are used to discretize the deposit into mineable volumes where grade values are assigned. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for this task where an interpolated value is calculated within a discrete volume. This group of block grades is the input for sequence optimizers, which base their decision on the economical value of a given block. Ultimately, the economical value of a block depends on its grade, making mine sequencing sensitive to all estimated values. If one looks to a block not as a single grade but as a set of equally possible grades, its economical value will change as different grades can be assigned to it. Stochastic simulation is known to provide the tools to assess grade variability, which makes it possible to generate equally probable values in a block. Different grade block models can thus be built and multiple sequencing alternatives are observed by running the optimizer for these distinct inputs. The results demonstrate that the methodology is adequate for risk assessment and proves to be useful for mining project sensitivity analyses. Differences in the project net present value showed that there is little difference between the two simulation methodologies (sequential Gaussian simulation and sequential indicator simulation) applied. Analyses of statistical data indicate that haulage accidents are one of the largest sources of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines, and that the rate of accidents in transportation has been increasing during the past few years. These previous analyses were performed by correlating accident or fatality data at a rather high level of miner activity. In this present investigation, underground surveys were made by observing conditions and activities in some detail at a rather low level of activity in an attempt to understand factors contributing to hazards in the specific situations observed. The aim of the current study was to derive preventive measures that might obviate the hazardous conditions and unsafe acts observed; and, following this, to provide recommendations for additional research and development to reduce accident potential in underground transportation. The major project tasks are diagrammed together with the task outputs in figure 1-1. Initially, a preliminary study of ell underground haulage operations was performed in order to establish the kinds of data needed and to provide the rationale leading to the data requirement. At the same time, the various types of haulage equipment used for each operation were defined. A preliminary analysis of each type of haulage operation was performed in order to establish the sequence of tasks required to operate haulage equipment. These tasks were transferred directly onto observation forms, and were used in developing interview forms. In parallel with the task analysis, a review was made of accidents and hazards that might occur during each type of operation.

In this paper, closed expressions have been obtained for the frequency spectrum of a Born-Karman square lattice in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic integrals. This work is part of continuing research by the Bureau of Mines with the thermodynamic properties of metals and minerals. Although other workers have obtained various types of approximations for the general case of the frequency spectrum of a square lattice, no one previously has obtained closed analytic expressions for this spectrum. To understand the optical and thermodynamic properties of crystals, several investigators have studied the distribution of frequencies of normal modes of vibration of the crystal lattice. Born and Karman3 laid the foundation for the theory of lattice dynamics and obtained detailed results for the case of a one-dimensional lattice. Blackman4 used numerical techniques to estimate the frequency distribution of a two-dimensional square lattice. Mbntroll5 analytically determined the frequency distribution of a square lattice for a particular value of the force constants. He also studied the more general problem and obtained some analytic approximations, using the method of moments. However, the calculations by this method were so difficult that it was not always practicable to carry them out. During the 14 years since the last update to National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101), there have been many discussions between Canadian regulators and mining companies about mining disclosure deficiencies that arise from regulatory reviews. These discussions are not made public, and as a result, there has been some drift in how NI 43-101 is interpreted by the regulators, which in turn creates uncertainty for the mining companies trying to comply with the instrument. To reduce uncertainty in mining disclosure requirements, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has issued a notice to update the current NI 43-101 with a streamlined instrument and form. Changes and benefits are listed in the “CSA Notice and Request for Comment — Proposed Repeal and Replacement of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects,” which is available on the Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia Securities Commission websites. The public has been invited to comment, with the comment period ending on Oct. 10, 2025. The 43-101 Companion Policy (43-101 CP) provides an update to the views of the regulators on how the CSA staff interpret and apply certain provisions of the instrument. Collectively, some of the changes to NI 43-101, the form and 43-101 CP are likely to increase the financial and other burdens on the mining companies responsible for the disclosure, and the qualified persons (QPs) who create the disclosure. In other instances, there are missed opportunities to reduce the burden on mining companies and QPs without impacting the markets.

Blast vibration seismograms are generally collected strictly for compliance with regulations. The peak levels (including dominant frequency) are typically all that are looked at. However, these records contain a lot more information about how a blast has performed. The seismogram is actually a record of explosive energy that was not used in fragmenting rock. The trick is to determine how to extract information that would be useful in analyzing blast performance.
