"The Gal/an alloy has been developed for continuous galvanizing of steel. The choice of the eutectic zinc-aluminum alloy with addition of misch metal gives a coating with specific characteristics as far as structure, analysis, surface chemistry and surface morphology are concerned. The performance of the uncoated Galfan coating is superior when compared to conventional galvanized particularly for corrosion resistance and ductility. For coil coating applications, these two assets are of the utmost importance but in order to benefit from these two advantages, good paint adherence and high resistance to edge creep and blistering have to be obtained. Despite Galfan's unique features compared to other zinc based or aluminum zinc based coatings, existing pretreatments and painting conditions are used with only minor modifications in order to assure good adherence and edge creep resistance. With compatible processing, Galfan can outperform galvanized and Galvalume as a substrate for coil coating as is demonstrated with various test results.IntroductionThe technical and commercial development of Galfan, a 95% zinc-5% aluminum-0.1% lanthanum-cerium hot-dip coating for steel, has been rapid. From its identification as a promising coating in late 1980, it has evolved from a research product to a fully commercial product with over 100 000 metric tons of coated sheet produced to date, and another 90 000 tons, at minimum, scheduled for 1986. The great majority of tonnage produced to date has been coil coated for use in building panel , appliance, and similar applications. Much technical work has been done to determine the suitability of Galfan for these applications and the proper way of processing sheet for best results. The present state of knowledge is discussed in this paper, along with some recent applications which are given asexamples"

There were no significant changes in the mineral industries of the smaller Caribbean Islands during 1980. Imported petroleum requirements continued to erode economic gains that may have occurred in other sectors. Some relief may be forthcoming as more qualified Caribbean countries take advantage of Trinidad and Tobago's petroleum product financing program (see Trinidad and Tobago). There were no crude oil discoveries in these areas during 1980, although some geophysical testing around the British Virgin Islands and Antigua war underway. In March 1980, the Government of Antigua sold a 75% interest in the 16,000-barrel- per-day West Indies Oil Co. refinery to the Swiss Intermaritime Bank and Intermaritime Management Services for $6 million. The new refinery company is called the National Petroleum Co. Shutdown since 1976, it was originally planned for the refinery to reopen in 1980, but refurbishing has proved to be more extensive than anticipated. The reopening is now expected in 1981.

Solid. dense, air-cooled slag can fulfil most, if not all, the functions of natural stone for civil engineering purposes. The value of pumice, also, has long been appreciated, and processes for the manufacture of similar synthetic material for light-weight concretes and insulating fills have been developed in past years.Foamed slag is, in effect, blast furnace pumice and is often referred to on the European continent as metallurgical pumice. It is made by the treatment of molten blast furnace slags with a critical quantity of water during which process the slag cools and expands into a sponge-like mass. The connection between foamed slag and air-cooled slag is also considered and a basis for density control given.All blast furnace slag cannot be foamed to give a product which would comply with B.S.S.877; 1939 Foamed Blast Furnace Slag. A large proportion of the total output of molten slag lacks the necessary inherent properties. This investigation attempts to discover the conditions necessary for the production of foamed slag capable of meeting the British specification.EARLIER WORKIt was generally accepted (Parker, 1951; Gallai-Hatchard, 1955) that the spongy structure of foamed slag was caused mechanically by steam trapped in the slag when it was poured into water. It was assumed that slags which would not foam would not trap steam, because their viscosities and surface tensions were unsatisfactory, on account of temperature and/or composition. The earliest systematic investigation was made by Frisak (1923) who attempted to establish a limiting chemical composition for foamable slags. He decided that foamable slags covered most blast furnace slag compositions on the basis of silica, alumina, and lime, and further "that the replacement of lime by magnesia up to 15 per cent has no noteworthy effect on foamability, that moderate quantities of alkalis are not deleterious, that sulphur raises the foamability and that MnO is only deleterious in the presence of 1...

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. The amount of airborne respirable dust generated from break- age of different coals varies widely. This research was conducted to identify the facets of airborne respirable dust liberation from the coal product. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low to high volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust generation. Bituminous coal samples from 8 mines (5 U.S. and 3 Polish) were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low air velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific quantity of airborne respirable dust generated. The results of this investigation build upon previously published results, which indicated that a combination of several factors are associated with the generation of airborne respirable dust. One factor involved is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. However, since coals of high moist fuel ratio (high rank) are generally more extensively cleated, it is suggested in the present work that the degree of cleating is directly responsible for the quantity of respirable-sized particles produced in the crushed product material for eastern U.S. coals. This is implied by the relationship of ash content and at least one mineral constituent (pyrite, determined from pyritic sulfur analysis) to the percentage of airborne respirable dust. To validate this hypothesis, a description is offered that is based on known coal petrography. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The air dry loss moisture factor appears to control the amount of airborne respirable dust that is liberated from the product. The resultant effect of these factors is that different percentages of coal particles smaller than 10 µm are dispersed as airborne respirable dust with a well-defined peak in the normalized airborne respirable dust for a narrow range of air dry loss moisture - ash ratios. A clear delineation of coals, based on well-known proximate analysis characteristics, that generate the most respirable dust appears to be possible. Heavy media cyclones (HMCs) are efficient, high-tonnage devices suitable for upgrading run-of-mine coal in the 50 to 0.5 mm size range. Unfortunately, industrial HMC circuits are often not optimized due to problems such as incorrect operating pressures, poor feed distribution, excessive media contamination, mismatched components, and improper density control. To avoid these problems, operating guidelines have been provided in this article that are useful for optimizing the performance of HMC circuits. The validity of these guidelines has been assessed by means of density tracer tests carried out at several coal preparation plants.

This paper shows the usefulness of geostatistical conditional simulation combined with the quantification of sampling errors obtained from the analyses of fundamental errors ? validated from duplicate data ? to assess the relevance of the quality and quantity of the information, for short-term mine planning purposes. Traditional blast-hole drilling equipment has been designed for efficient drilling, but not for obtaining high-quality samples. Furthermore, blast-hole sampling interferes with production, and thus usually produces poor-quality results. These results are the basis of short-term plans, where the grades of selective mining units are estimated and used for distinguishing between ore and waste. Under these conditions, misclassification (ore blocks sent to the waste dump and waste blocks processed at the plant) is inevitable, leading to significant hidden losses that can amount to millions of dollars per annum. Reverse circulation drilling with the latest automated sampling technology improves significantly the quality of the information used for short-term planning, and thus reduces misclassification, improving the financial returns of the operation. In this paper, we present the general methodology for assessing the effect of poor blast-hole sampling, as compared to advanced reverse circulation drilling grids at several spacings, in order to arrive at the most appropriate grid for short-term planning. This plan can be prepared well in advance using several additional variables that are usually not available when the plan is based on blast-hole samples. Furthermore, blending options can be analysed in order to optimize plant recovery, minimize the use of sulphuric acid, etc. Three case studies are presented, namely a typical porphyry copper deposit, an exotic oxide copper deposit, and a complex gold deposit, where mineralization is controlled by structures and lithology. This paper shows that in all cases, advanced reverse circulation drilling grids provide good-quality information that, coupled with the use of geostatistics for short-term mine planning, significantly improve the financial returns of the operation.

In recent years several mine researchers have studied the optimization of cutoff grade with the purpose of maximizing Net Present Value (NPV). The best and most popular one is the Lane algorithm. Based upon the Lane algorithm it is possible to calculate the optimum cutoff grade for mine, mill, and refinery capacities for single metal deposits with variable grades. The Lane algorithm cannot be used in multiple metal deposits. The reason is that, while in single metal deposits six points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grade, in multiple metal deposits an infinite number points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grades and objective function evaluation of these infinite points is impossible. In this study the Golden Section search method was used to calculate optimum cutoff grades of multiple metal deposits for the same conditions as Lane assumed in single metal deposits. Based on this method, grade-tonnage distribution uncertainty space of problem is guessed. In the next step, by selecting test points in uncertainty space and evaluating the objective function at these points, a part of uncertainty space will be eliminated. The procedure is then repeated until the uncertainty space has been sufficiently reduced to ensure that the optimum cutoff grades have been located to the required accuracy. Some 30 years ago exposure to dense-medium separation in South Africa, culminated in the adaptation of the process for the treatment of -0.5 mm fines. The first commercial plant at Greenside Colliery apparently operated for some 18 years. Three further plants followed, including one treating tin ore. It is gratifying to learn, therefore, that there is renewed interest. The objective of making the process easier to operate (?more practical??) is commendable but the cumbersome technical approach could be counter productive. Perhaps a brief outline of the original thinking might be helpful when analysing the problem.

The West's Shell Pile has been used on sites with very soft ground conditions for over 60 years. Fibre reinforced precast concrete shells 900mm long are threadled onto an internal mandrel which can be extended according to the depth driven to attain the load bearing resistance. On completion of driving the mandrel is removed leaving the precast shells to form a permanent lining to the cast insitu concrete core. To give resistance to high contamination, a tar based epoxy coat is sprayed on the outside of the shells or a flexible PVC liner is installed inside the shells to protect the core. Fundamental to the resistance to contamination is the quality of the precast fibre reinforced concrete shell, the mix design and method of manufacture. A series of detailed laboratory experiments were carried out using samples immersed in concentrated acid and sulphate solution. The long term effects of exposure to contamination is recorded in the case studies of existing piles at two gasworks sites.

Late Cenozoic ore deposits æPrecious and base metal-richÆ and æSn-Ag-polymetallicÆ ofNorthern Puna are associated either with Middle Miocene dacitic volcanic-dome complexes or with Upper Miocene dacitic-andesitic volcanic centres.   Ore mineralogies and their related volcanism are discussed. A strong link is observed between the Cenozoic Metallogenetic Province of Northern Puna and the Southern Bolivia Tin and polymetallic provinces.

Phase I of these studies demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the efficiency and capacity of sorbents in tube-type samplers for contaminant gases. This was accomplished by measuring concentration at various points along the length of the diffusion path during sampling. Concentrations were measured by removing small aliquots with gas-tight syringes and gas chromatography. With hexane as the gas and activated charcoal as the sorbent the procedure was quite successful and we proceeded with Phase II of the study; this involved application of the principle to gases of importance in diesel exhaust using a variety of sorbents. When we worked with high concentrations of the test gas we clearly demonstrated the differences in both efficiency and capacity of the sorbents for each of several gases. The chief drawbacks of the system were that we were unsuccessful in determining more toxic gases at realistic occupational exposure levels or determining formaldehyde at any level using the flame ionization detector. It was concluded that, although the method is feasible, more sensitive methods of measuring concentrations of gas in the tube must be developed to make the procedure applicable to regions of chief industrial hygiene interest.

The land mass of the Asia and Pacific region comprises 11 million square miles or about 15% of the total Earth's land area. The bulk of the region is contained on the Asian continental land mass. Australia, the world's largest island or the world's smallest continent, alone is almost as large as the continental United States. The islands of New Zealand, New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Honshu are among the largest in the world. Collectively, they constitute a land area of 1.1 million square miles or an area about one-fourth the size of the United States. The countries in the Asia and Pacific region represent some of the most vibrant economies in the world. Japan is undisputed as one of the world's leaders in manufacturing and commerce. Hong Kong and Singapore are significant both as entrepôt and banking centers. The economies of Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan compare favorably to the level of the industrialized countries in western Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand have maintained strong economic growth during the past two decades. All these countries in the Asia and Pacific region collectively constitute a significant bloc as to raw materials production and consumption, as to manufacturing, and as to world trade.

THE Alaska Juneau mine has been developed through an adit driven at the elevation of the top of the mill and all mining is done above this main haulage level. As a result of wholesa1e"mining operations about 11,000 tons rock containing one dollar' per ton in gold is, hauled to the. concentrator during every 24 hr. Due to the method of mining, whereby a system of oreways delivers-the.ore direct from the stope to the bottom level of the mine, no tramming of ore is done on any of the upper levels. However, ;in doing exploratory drifting and crosscutting on the upper levels, the broken material is trammed by hand in 1-ton 18-in. gage cars to a nearby raise connecting with one of the several oreways. This constitutes the only tramming operation except that on the main level.

"Multiple-point simulation (MPS) methods have been developed over the last decade as a means of reproducing complex geological patterns while generating stochastic simulations. Some geological spatial configurations are complex, such as the spatial geometries and patterns of diamondbearing kimberlite pipes and their internal facies controlling diamond quality and distribution.Two MPS methods were tested for modelling the geology of a diamond pipe located at the Ekati mine, NT, Canada. These are the single normal equation simulation algorithm SNESIM, which captures different patterns from a training image (TI), and the filter simulation algorithm FILTERSIM, which classifies the patterns founded on the TI. Both methods were tested in the stochastic simulation of a four-category geology model: crater, diatreme, xenoliths, and host rock. Soft information about the location of host rock was also used. The validation of the simulation results shows a reasonable reproduction of the geometry and data proportions for all geological units considered; the validation of spatial statistics, however, shows that although simulated realizations from both methods reasonably reproduce the fourth-order spatial statistics of the TI, they do not reproduce well the same spatial statistics of the available data (when this differs from the TI). An interesting observation is that SNESIM better imitated the shape of the pipe, while FILTERSIM yielded a better reproduction of the xenolith bodies. IntroductionThe simulation of geological units poses several technical problems that challenge the capabilities of available geostatistical simulation approaches and their ability to deal with spatial complexity of categorical variables. The spatial geometry of diamondbearing pipes and their internal facies controlling diamond distributions are a specific and well-known difficult modelling problem. The geometry of a kimberlite pipe is typically like an inverted cone (Figure 1); the wider part is known as the crater and is located near the surface, and the narrower, deeper part is known as the diatreme. Xenolith bodies can also be found inside the pipe. A very important contribution to the geological modelling of the contours of the pipe is the measure of uncertainty about the location of the contact between the kimberlite pipe and the host rock."

On 16 July 2004, at 07:10 a collapse of about 1.8 million m3 (about 4 ½ million tons) took place on the north wall on Nchanga Open Pit. This collapse was the result of a developing instability that was first identified when the benches in this area were exposed during September 2002. The NOP geotechnical and survey departments closely monitored the development of the failure. Control measures were implemented to reduce risk to men and equipment. These measures were continually improved and adjusted in reaction to observations and changing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the monitoring results that were obtained both by traditional methods and the novel slope stability radar system (SSR). Difficulties encountered in establishing critical deformation levels and deformation rates that can be used to predict the onset of collapse are described. Details of the monitoring and control measures, which led to the successful completion of mining in the area, are also described in this paper.

The Bureau of Mines is developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in municipal incinerator residues. This report describes the first phase of the research, in which reliable methods for sampling and analyzing municipal residues were established and the composition and characteristics of the residues were determined. Samples were obtained from a variety of grate-type furnaces and also from a rotary kiln furnace. The samples were processed on a batch basis and separated into their natural categories by a variety of methods including screening, magnetic separation, air separation techniques, and handpicking. The main components of the residues were determined to be metal and metal oxides, glass, and ash.
