Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

This paper is intended as a review and update of the use of Pressure Injected Footings as deep foundation units in North America. We will discuss various aspects of this pile and then discuss a particular project - the Mobile Alabama Convention Centre which is currently under construction. Pressure Injected Footing is a generic name used to describe a foundation unit that has been in use around the world for some 80 years. It has been used on all types of structures. It is an excellent pile in both compression and tension. It is particularly economic where a layer of granular soils can be found at relatively shallow depths. Other types of piles would penetrate these layers. Caissons are often difficult to construct in these soils because of their lack of cohesion and the often present water table. PIFs can density these shallow layers and carry relatively heavy building loads on them.

"Mill feed materials that are not run-of-mine ore are often a challenge for mineral processors and tend to accumulate in stockpiles, where they remain unprocessed for many years and become “slow moving inventories”. During a complete re-evaluation of the Clarabelle Mill operation (38,000 ton/day capacity) in 2000, it was concluded that there was an opportunity to assemble a 5,000 ton/day custom circuit to treat such stockpiles in the equipment that remained available during regularly scheduled maintenance shut-downs.This project was part of the larger Mill Redesign Project and involved testing the intended flowsheet under a number of operating scenarios for the first material to be treated: spent refractory bricks. The laboratory focus was on how to maximize returns using the available equipment and reagents.The circuit was successfully commissioned in the fall of 2000. As the brick stockpile was depleted, other potential feeds were evaluated at the laboratory, as well as in the new custom circuit itself. Processing of the spent refractory brick has yielded a significant contribution to the profitability of INCO. Significant opportunities lie ahead for generating more value from other slow moving inventories.INTRODUCTIONIntegrated mining operations tend to have slow moving inventories along the path from the mines to the finished products. Spent refractory bricks from furnaces and converters and furnace bottoms are materials that often end up in long-tern stockpiles. Such stockpiles are a challenge, although they represent small tonnages on an annual basis, because they are unique materials, which cannot be readily brought into the process at a rate anywhere near that at which they are produced, due to the high contents of deleterious components such as chromite or magnesia. Accumulation over years will eventually yield a metal inventory worthy of consideration given the right opportunity, such as availability of spare equipment or peak metal prices."

Since 1974, a large amount of data has been developed concerning the physical properties and stability characteristics of waste generated by the mining and preparation of bituminous coal. However, very little information has been developed on the properties and characteristics of anthracite waste. During this Bureau of Mines research project, coarse anthracite breaker refuse from five sites in eastern Pennsylvania was sampled and the physical properties, which indicate stability characteristics, were determined in the laboratory. Coarse anthracite breaker refuse is quite similar to coarse bituminous refuse in chemical and mineralogical composition. However, the physical properties of the anthracite waste materials tested are different from those of coarse bituminous refuse. For the coarse anthracite breaker refuse tested, the average maximum laboratory density is 113.2 lb/ft3, the average angle of internal friction (direct shear) and average cohesion are 30.2° and 2.6 psi, respectively, and the average permeability (four sites) is 1.24 x 10-2 cm/sec. Stability analyses were conducted on six theoretical anthracite waste embankments. These analyses show the effects on minimum safety factors of geometry, phreatic surface level, and physical properties.

It has been observed in several Jameson cell installations where the source for flotation feed is deslime screens, that the recovery of coal particles greater than 0.5 m is not as great as that of finer material. Consequently, a research project was undertaken at a CHPP in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, to assess the possibility of increasing the recovery of coarser particles (+0.5 mm) within the downcomer of the Jameson Cell. The effect of decreasing turbulence and agitation in a commercial-scale downcomer was investigated to assess the effect on the recovery of both coarse and fine coal particles. This paper details the findings of the testwork, summarising the results relating to differences in the operating parameters within the downcomer.

Periodic dilute sulphuric acid treatment ofstill, batch-fed, molassesenriched, microaerobic, manganese-dioxide-Ieaching microbial cultures led to marked improvements over untreated cultures. Percentage Mn++ recoveries increased (7X), rate of Mn++ formation improved (3X) and yields of Mn++ per molasses use were more economical (5 X). The yield in terms of molasses used improved with decreasing sugar used (eg 1.17 g Mn++/gram molasses at 0.2 per cent molasses (w/v) feed and 24 per cent (w/v) pulp density MnO2 tailings). The most effective Mn++ leaching in terms ofpercentage recovery (97 per cent) and rate ofleaching (46 mg Mn++/day) was at 0.5 per cent molasses (w/v) and 14 per cent pulp density (w/v) MnO2 tailings.

In the solvent extraction process, also referred to as liquid-liquid extraction, the clarified uranium-pregnant sulfuric acid leach solution is contacted with an organic extractant dispersed in kerosene; the uranium enters the organic phase and associates itself with the organic extractants. Simultaneously an-ions or cations, as the case may be, leave the organic extractant phase and enter the aqueous phase. The two phases are then allowed to separate by virtue of their immiscibility. Based on the data available, a generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the sodium carbonate scrub liquor of acid leach uranium mills using secondary and tertiary amine extractants is presented, as is another generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the bleed stream of alkaline leach uranium mill circuits. Such economic appraisal as can be made at this stage of the development is also indicated. Molybdenum occurs in most uranium ores. Whether the uranium is solubilized by the acid leach route or by the alkaline leach process, some of the molybdenum present in the ore is solubilized along with the uranium. Molybdenum in uranium mill pregant solutions may cause processing difficulties, among which may be mentioned the poisoning of resins, the precipitation of organo-molybdenum complexes, or the build-up of molybdenum in recycle streams. While the uranium milling industry has been successful in applying measures to overcome the problems arising from the presence of molybdenum in the circuits, such measures nevertheless add to the cost of producing uranium yellow cake concentrate. Table I shows the analysis of typical uranium pregnant leach solutions. Uranium recovery by solvent extraction is presently practiced only in conjunction with acid leach circuits, and it may be noted that of about 16,000 tons of uranium ore daily processed by sulfuric acid leach, more than half of this tonnage follows the solvent extraction route. Uranium mills leaching ore with sodium carbonate-sodium bicarbonate solution (the so-called alkaline leach circuit) do not use solvent extraction. In this case the uranium pregnant solution is sufficiently pure to permit the direct precipitation of uranium concentrate with subsequent recycle of the alkaline leach solution. While solvent extraction procedures may be developed which are economically attractive for the alkaline leach uranium process, this has so far not been the case. The earlier uranium mill solvent extraction circuits used organo-phosphate extraction reagents, among which di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid was popular. It should be borne in mind that uranium in its sulfuric acid leach solution exists in an equilibrium involving uranium in both anion and cation forms: uo + 2S0 = [uo2(so4)2] For this reason uranium may be extracted by either cation extractors or anion extractors and this is likewise true of molybdenum. However, the organo-phosphate extractants also load ferric iron which is usually present in the uranium acid leach solution. For this reason, it is necessary to reduce this solution substantially to the ferrous state ahead of solvent extraction using organo-phosphate reagents. The amines, being anion extractors, selectively reject iron and thus render the iron reduction step unnecessary. Nationalization is high on the policy agenda in South Africa. This paper considers the case for nationalizing the local mining sector from an evidence-based perspective, which is derived from theoretical considerations and related to the known features of the South African mining sector and economy. A strong case against nationalization emerges, which can be summarized as follows. The mining sector is competitive and therefore a poor candidate for public ownership. Furthermore, the resources sector does not dominate the South African economy nor does it create the risk of a decrease in the competitiveness of the industrial sector via the unintended adverse impact of an appreciating real exchange rate due to a commodity boom (Dutch Disease). Nationalizing the mining sector will cost the government more than it receives. This is not only a bad idea in itself, but it will limit the scope for distributive policies on the national budget. The contemporary international experience demonstrates the risks of fiscal imprudence. Finally, nationalizing the resources sector will undermine support for those very market-based institutions required to achieve a higher long-run growth trajectory.

The pores within iron ore sinter are important for producing a high quality material that is strong and easily reduced. The complementary methods of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) were used to characterise the structure of industrial and pilot scales sinters across a wide range of pore sizes (3 nm to 100 µm for MIP and 50 µm to 5 mm for CT). The inhomogeneous nature of sinter and the variation in the measurements make it difficult to compare samples. The generalised additive modelling (GAM) approach, using the open source statistical software package, R, has been applied to highlight where there are peaks in the concentration of pore sizes. Importantly, the shape of the GAM-fitted function and the heights of the peaks show statistically significant differences between samples. For the samples investigated, the GAM-fitted functions for the MIP volume distribution of pore diameters were found to have a common set of distinctive peaks at 0.005, 0.6 and 20 µm. The GAM approach was also applied to the X-ray CT measured pore wall thickness, highlighting a single peak whose position varies between samples. The cause of these distinctive peaks and their implications for sinter quality are discussed. Correlation was found between the volume in peak 1 (0.005 µm) and the concentration of primary hematite. No correlation was found between the pore wall thickness and the strength of the sinter, suggesting the composition of the pore walls may be more important. This article deals with some of the civil engineering related problems to be encountered when offshore wind energy projects transform from prototype offshore wind energy converter farms, developed and installed during the 1990's, to commercial farms that's currently planned to be built. The offshore wind energy converter (OWEC) installations encounter a wide range of problems, only partial of these are geotechnical. In Europe both onshore and offshore wind farms have, from a historical point of view, usually been founded by using the monopole technique, installed with traditional impact hammers, or by using gravitational foundations. However, the rapid development of bigger turbines and larger wind farms, together with increasing considerations of fatigue aspects, has lead to financial benefits of developing and exploring other foundation techniques. This paper reviews some Scandinavian experiences regarding critical components of the design phase in relation to connecting the superstructure to the ground, and some of the main considerations of how the loads applied to the structure are transferred to the surrounding soil. The fourteenth National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest we;; held at the State fairgrounds, Columbus, Ohio, October 2, 3, and 4, 1951. The meet, the first such event in 21 years, was under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, and the Joseph A Holmes Safety Association and was sponsored by the National Coal Association, the United Mine Workers of America, and various State mine-inspection departments. The cooperating agencies that contributed to make the meet a success, in addition to the National Coal Association and the United Mine Workers of America, were the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, Ohio Division of Mines, West Virginia Department of Mines, Pennsylvania Department of Mines, and the Columbus Convention Bureau. SUMMARY Fourteen teams from 6 States participated in the mine rescue contest, and 55 teams from 9 States competed in the first-aid contest. Only one of these teams entered as a combination team, that is, participating in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are listed in table 1.

Belt network simulators are the most widely used models in the design of belt networks. The simulators developed in the past two decades are reviewed and their limitations are discussed. To overcome these limitations and to provide a design model that can be used efficiently in real-life applications, a comprehensive non-simulation model has been developed. The features of this model are briefly discussed. A real example is used to demonstrate the model's superiority over belt simulators

"In recent years operators of brown-ore mines have shown increasing interest in .the reclamation of ore heretofore lost in tailing ponds. In January and February.1945 the author made a preliminary survey of the ponds in the Russellville district, Franklin County, Ala. The Russellville district (fig. 1) was chosen for the preliminary work because it contains many large ponds in a comparatively restricted area. All important properties in the district were visited with Charles R. Wilson of Russellville, who has been familiar with the Franklin County brown-ore industry since 1890; with Edmund Craddock and W. S. Blackburn, managers of the two washers now operated near Russellville by Shook & Fletcher Supply Co., and with S. A. Britton, manager of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Co. washer. The larger ponds were measured roughly and tonnages estimated. and samples taken from different areas were analyzed and beneficiated at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines; Tuscaloosa, Ala.The ponds explored were the Sloss No.1 (Ensley); the Sloss No. 8, and the Sloss No. 4-5, which are among the largest in the district and so located, within an area of .three square miles (see fig. 2), that ore from all of them could be-treated,one centrally located washer.Actual work was begun on May 9. Between that date and June 30, when field work was completed, 246 holes in ponds were drilled and sampled, and 15 additional holes were put down primarily to test the drill .in different types of ground with a view to its possible utilization in other types of prospecting. Samples from all holes were analyzed for iron content; samples from 13 holes were sized and analyses made for each size fraction, and six large samples have been composited for beneficiation tests.Brown iron ore has been mined in the Russellville district since 1815, when the first blast furnace in Alabama was built in NW1/4 sec. 10, T. 7 S., R. 12 W., about 3 miles southwest of Russellville (19).-J The furnace was abandoned before the Civil War, and mining continued on a small scale until 1888, when Enoch Ensley began to mine the ridge between Russellville and Pain Creek. His first washer, Ensley No. 1, was about 300 feet south of the junction of the present Tharptown road with the Waco spur of the Southern Railway."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a photoelectric concentrator apparatus which is capable of collecting incremental products from the discharge of wet concentrating tables. The instrument uses photoelectric cells as sensors to differentiate between two products which have differences in color or reflectivity. The photocells provide a signal that controls a mobile splitting device that separates the products. Tests conducted on a wet table demonstrated the ability of the apparatus to separate a product containing 81.5 percent pyrite from a lower-grade product containing only 68.8 percent pyrite. The photoelectric concentrator should have a broad application for collecting concentrates with visible color or reflectivity differences from wet concentrating tables.

A jet pump injector was developed and successfully tested, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of a jet injector for introducing coarse coal into an operating slurry face haulage system: In Phase I a variety of injection concepts were evaluated, and the jet pump was identified as best, due to its simplicity, compactness and performance potential. In Phase IIA subscale jet pump injector tests were conducted, and a computer model of a jet pump injector was developed whose performance predictions correlated well with subscale test results. In Phase IIB various system configurations were defined for integrating a jet pump injector into a fully operational underground coarse slurry face haulage system, further highlighting the feasibility and practicality of such a system. In Phase III a full-scale mobile haulage vehicle embodying a jet pump injector and coal sizing equipment was detail designed into a practical vehicle with attractive performance characteristics. More importantly, fully operational full scale jet pump injector -and feeder/breaker subassemblies were tested and proven successful in their ability to down-size coal to 3" in all 3 dimensions and to consistantly provide slurry of 4217 weight concentration at 6.4 TPM throughput under a wide range of operating conditions including zero to maximum feed rate within 5 seconds.

Nevertheless, a practitioner knows that there is a broader context in which the practice of sampling takes place. This broader context, being less well defined than the theory of correct sampling, receives correspondingly less exposure which this commentary??prompted by? BG?seeks to rectify. ?Correctness? of a sampler is the central concern of BG, where it is presented as a sharp ?black-and-white ?distinction. The removal of gangue minerals from three different graphite ores (Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere) from Turkey by acid leaching was studied. Acid leaching experiments were applied to the flotation bulk concentrates, which were obtained in determined optimum conditions after preliminary flotation tests. The effects of acid type, acid concentration, leaching temperature and leaching time on the dissolution of gangue minerals were studied. The most suitable leaching conditions were determined to be 20% HCl + 4% HF for acid type and concentration, 85 ºC for leaching temperature and 4 hours for leaching time. After removing the gangue minerals at these optimum conditions, the total carbon contents of the samples from Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere increased from 23.51% to 40.07%, from 37.93 to 60.47% and from 42.28 to 59.47%, respectively.

"The Marmara Ironworks was not the earliest ironworks in Ontario, but it was distinguished from other early works in a number of ways. It was established on an ambitious scale as a self-sufficient and, for the time, sophisticated community. In effect it was an iron plantation on the scale and scope of those at Hopewell, Pennsylvania and Saugus, Massachusetts(1). It was, besides, the only one of the few early ironworks in Upper Canada which operated almost to the end of the nineteenth century, albeit in fits and starts, and which used magnetic ores rather than bog iron ores (limonite). Furthermore it is the only works which has produced archaeological interest over a number of years. The ironworks is on the east bank of the Crowe River near Highway 7, on Lots 7 and 8, Concession 4, Marmara Township, Hastings County, Ontario. It is the property of the Village of Marmara, and the extant remains encompass about 2. 5 acres of the original 2000 or so which made up the original grant. The mineral riches of the Canadian Shield had been known since the days of the Jesuit missionary-explorers. A consortium headed by Alexander Henry and the Duke of Gloucester planned to exploit the copper near Sault Ste. Marie during the last part of the eighteenth century, but nothing came of the venture(2). This attempt may have grown out of Lord Dorchester's suggestion that private enterprise be encouraged in order that the iron ore which ""abounds"" in Canada might be exploited(3). John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada was also anxious to see iron working develop. Simcoe was eager to encourage many enterprises, among which ""the development of iron mines""(4) - Governor Gore had been approached by John Mason for help with his ironworks in Norfolk County (5). Three Americans had applied for permission and support to erect an ironworks on the Gananoque River at the falls to become known as Furnace Falls. They were granted 1000 acres of land in fee simple to encourage their endeavor(6). Sir Peregrine Maitland, only a few months after taking up his duties as Lieutenant Governor in 1818, intended to visit the ""bed of iron ore on the Crow River"" (7) - Maitland was to provide a good deal of support, both moral and substantive, to Charles Hayes when he came to Canada in 1820."

The liquid crystal display (LCD) are currently known by its vast application in electro ? electronic devices, amongst them can be detached the devices of TV, laptops, electronic date, calculators and even though the mobile telephones (mobiles). The mobiles are changed more frequent of the TV for example, this happens due to the technology advance. With the constantly mobile exchange, the batteries, printed circuit board and liquid crystal display accumulation its become an environmental problem. To minimize the environmental impacts caused by mobile telephones residues are considered the segregation process of the LCDs main components, to goal to recover the recycle material. This process involves the use of treatment ore techniques with disc, hammers and balls mills. The process with best efficiency (about 98%) of LCD glass release was the hammers mill. The glass recovered can be used in the glass recycling and the sand substitution in the production of concrete blocks.
